MS Athena – One of the Oldest Cruise Ships

In operation since 65-years, the Athena cruise ship bears a rich legacy of cruising history. Originally built to operate in the Northern Atlantic cruise route as the MS Stockholm , MS Athena has provided faultless cruising service to its other owners, in the years since and is not one of the oldest cruise ships in the world.

MS Athena cruise vessel is under the ownership of the Classic International Cruise Line, which acquired the vessel around 2005.

A moderately sized cruise ship, the Athena has undergone several renovations in the past six decades of its operation so as to make it more suitable to the present-day needs of cruising requirements. Originally intended to accommodate less than 400 cruisers, at the time of her original construction in 1948, the vessel can presently spaciously accommodate over 550 voyagers.

ms athena

The cruise vessel has often been termed to provide the best services for cruisers wanting to enjoy a great cruising experience in the most budgeted manner possible. MS Athena, unlike her more luxurious counterparts, offers exceptionally brilliant servicing which has resulted in the vessel gaining further popularity and appeal.

MS Athena: Fact-Sheet

Although the Athena cruise ship isn’t one of the biggest cruise ships in operation today, its technical dimensions and constructional value is still rated among the best of all times. The following details about the same can be pinpointed as follows:

  • Lengthwise proportions of 160 metres with a width of 21 metres and a draft of over 7.5 metres
  • Operational speeds of about 16 knots, with a GRT of slightly over 16,100 tonnes
  • State-of-the-art entertainment facilities, highly relaxing coffee bars and lounges and exceptionally high-end spas and gymnasiums

Presently registered under the Portuguese flag, the MS Athena was originally was flagged as a Swedish vessel. Though the vessel’s claim to fame is quite well-known in the international cruise industry, it has also made the news for some less favorable reasons.

Most recently, the ship was impounded by the French naval authorities for lack of payment of fueling costs though the vessel was allowed to resume its routine course of operations thereafter. Around five years ago, the vessel was also subject to a pirating attack near the Gulf of Aden, though safe passage was finally acquired for the vessel and its crew.

But the most infamous incident in the MS Athena’s operational history is that of its accident with the cruise vessel Andrea Doria in the year 1960. Operating as the Stockholm then, the cruise ship did suffer some serious damages to its hull. However, the vessel was one of the first to aid in the rescuing operations by taking aboard many of the survivors of the ill-fated Andrea Doria to the New York (city) harbor.

M/V Athena has large comfy cabin with a much-appreciated balcony

M/V Athena has large comfy cabin with a much-appreciated balcony

  • Jackie Sheckler Finch
  • On 02, Aug 2016

Settling into my cabin on the M/V Athena, I as surprised that it is larger than expected and quite comfortable. I thought the 50-passenger M/V Athena might have smaller rooms but this is plenty roomy for two. Since I am traveling alone, I feel a bit pampered with the extra space.

My bed is two twin beds that can be joined or not. On each side of the bed is a nightstand with two drawers, a bottom shelf and a lamp. One nightstand also has a telephone and clock. A small round circular table has two chairs, an ice bucket, two glasses and a basket of fruit.

Across from the bed is the good-sized bathroom with a walk-in shower, commode and sink with a shelf underneath. Grand Circle has its own line of toiletries arranged in a bathroom basket. The shower also has a dispenser for shampoo and body wash. I like that because there is less waste. I don’t know how many bars of soap or opened bottles of shampoo and body wash I have discarded when heading home from a trip.

Next to the bathroom is a closet with plenty of hangers, three drawers and a safe. Doubt if it is true but program director Antun Maticevic told us a tale about a passenger with a complaint a couple of years ago.

“Steam was coming out of her ears she was so mad,” Antun said. “She said her microwave wouldn’t work. I thought that was strange since our ship cabins don’t have microwaves. So I went there to see what was the problem. I saw she had put a cup of coffee in the safe to heat it up.”

Now that I think of it, that might be true. I’m sure Antun and other tour leaders could probably write a book about goofy things passengers have said and done.

Anyway, next to the closet is a desk with a push-in hassock under it and a flat screen TV over it. A hair dryer is in one of the desk drawers. A large sliding glass door leads to my outside balcony with two chairs and a table. I plan to spend considerable time out there watching the sea as we cruise. A porthole window and the sliding glass doors both have heavy curtains to block out the sun but I don’t think that will be necessary. Our tours will be starting early each day.

My cabin has half-paneled walls, a paneled ceiling and a maroon décor. The M/V Athena was built in 2007 by Grand Circle to sail the Dalmatian Coast and the ship’s ambiance reflects that. Grand Circle had a photographer go to countries we will be visiting to capture scenes of everyday life. Those black-and-white photos are enjoyed throughout the ship, including three in my cabin with soft lights over them.

The cabin has both American electrical outlets and Western Europe outlets. I always carry two plug adapters in my suitcase so this should be plenty of outlets for all my gadgets. Each cabin has individual air conditioning and heat controls.

Free WiFi is available throughout the ship. That is something passengers requested, Antun said. Think I see a definite pattern here: Passengers ask and Grand Circle listens.

Antun has already warned us that we will receive a long survey to complete when we get home. The feedback is valuable for future cruises and is definitely worth the time to fill out, he said, because suggestions are considered and changes are made.

Well, let’s just say we’re glad that two people know how to take command of a situation when a cruise ship runs into trouble in the 9-1-1 Season 7 premiere — and those two are Athena ( Angela Bassett ) and Bobby ( Peter Krause ).

We get a taste of just that in TV Insider’s exclusive first look at a new promo for the first responder series’ upcoming seventh season, premiering March 14 on ABC after moving from Fox . It offers not only a look at some of the emergencies to come for the 118 in Los Angeles — including a crashed jet — but also the others learning that something’s going on with Athena and Bobby’s trip. Maddie ( Jennifer Love Hewitt ) tells Chimney ( Kenneth Choi ), “Bobby and Athena’s cruise ship might be missing.”

Then we see Bobby asking, “my wife, where is she?” Watch the full video above for the answer from cruise director Julian Enes (recurring guest star Rick Cosnett ), which really shouldn’t surprise you, given we’re talking about Athena, and much more.

In addition to Bassett, Krause, Hewitt, and Choi,  9-1-1 stars Oliver Stark as Buck, Aisha Hinds as Hen, Ryan Guzman as Eddie, and Gavin McHugh as Christopher.

They Wouldn't! Is Fire Country Bracing for [Spoiler]'s Death?

9-1-1 follows the heroic firefighters, paramedics and other emergency personnel at the Los Angeles Fire Department’s fictional Station 118 in Los Angeles, California. Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, the procedural drama premiered in January 2018 and spawned the spin-off series 9-1-1: Lone Star . It stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Guzman, among others. The show aired its first six seasons on FOX, but it was canceled by the  network in May 2023 and picked up by ABC.

Fans were shocked when Bobby Nash (Krause) and Athena Grant (Bassett) first got together, but the unlikely pairing had immediate chemistry and they quickly became a fan-favorite couple. Both of their lives may be at risk in the upcoming Season 7, however, and fans are very worried for them.

Do Bobby and Athena die on 9-1-1 Season 7?

Bobby Nash - 9-1-1

Do Bobby and Athena die on 9-1-1 Season 7? Although we don’t know for sure, several promos for Season 7 suggest that the married couple may be in serious danger. During the Season 6 finale, Bobby and Athena set out for a last-minute cruise ship vacation. “We’ll call them when we get there,” Bobby told Athena, referring to the rest of their crew. Athena jokingly responded, “maybe not,” which could have been a hint that they wouldn’t get the chance.

In a Season 7 teaser shared on the show’s Instagram account, a cruise ship can be seen exploding and beginning to sink. A 9-1-1 call begins to play and a woman can be heard saying: “ I’m on a cruise … I think there was an explosion!” A hand that looks like Athena’s then slams against the cruise ship window. “I can’t get out,” the voice tells the dispatcher. “ There’s water everywhere, we’re going down!” While it’s hard to tell if the voice belongs to Athena, fans are worried that it’s the same cruise ship the couple were headed out on. “I CANNOT tell if it’s athena’s voice or not because it vaguely sounds like her but we don’t hear athena’s voice with so much distress often,” one fan wrote. Another was sure that it was Athena, writing: “That’s Athena Voice! Y’all better stop playing in my face this early!” A third fan noted that 9-1-1 ‘s network change could indicate that a main character will be killed off. “N ow that 911 is on abc it makes sense bc abc is not afraid to have characters killed off, so we will see!” they wrote.

Plenty of ABC shows have had their main characters killed off. Grey’s Anatomy killed of protagonist Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), as well as several other main characters, and its spin-off, Station 19 , killed off the beloved Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan), in addition to many other characters.

<p><em>9-1-1 </em>lead Angela Bassett is married to her husband and fellow actor Courtney B. Vance (<em>Law & Order, Scandal, Revenge, The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story</em>). The pair got married on October 12, 1997, and had fraternal twins, Bronwyn Golden Vance and Slater Josiah Vance, in January 2006, via surrogate.</p> <p>When asked if her kids (now 16 years old) will follow in her acting footsteps, she responded, “They want to follow the success, but whether it be acting, I don’t get any clues to that right now,” Bassett told <a href="https://people.com/parents/angela-bassett-kids-following-acting-footsteps-whatever-they-want-to-do/"><em>People</em></a> in January 2023. “It’s a little music, a little sports. But whatever they want to do, I support them.”</p>

Peter Krause and Lauren Graham

<p>Peter Krause has one son with his ex-girlfriend Christine King, Roman Krause, who was born in November 2001. Not much is known about Krause and King’s relationship or why they split. But we do know that Krause’s most recent ex-girlfriend, <a href="https://soaps.sheknows.com/soaps/news/668472/peter-krause-kids/">Lauren Graham, helped raise Roman</a> during their relationship when they all lived together for many years.</p> <p>In the actress’ 2022 memoir, <a href="https://clicks.trx-hub.com/xid/pmc_0aaa4_soaps?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHave-Told-You-This-Already%2Fdp%2FB09SP37633%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Ftag%3Dsoaps0f6-20%26asc_source%3Dweb%26asc_campaign%3Dweb%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fsoaps.sheknows.com%252Fsoaps%252Fnews%252F668472%252Fpeter-krause-kids%252F&p=https%3A%2F%2Fsoaps.sheknows.com%2Fsoaps%2Fnews%2F668472%2Fpeter-krause-kids%2F&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&event_type=click"><em>Have I Told You This Already? Stories I Don’t Want to Forget to Remember</em></a>, she shared that despite her breakup with Krause, she hopes that Roman will “be a part of the rest of [her] life.” She also says in the book, according to <em><a href="https://soaps.sheknows.com/soaps/news/668472/peter-krause-kids/#:~:text=an%20interview%20with-,People,-in%20November%202022">People</a></em>: “I’ve never been a mom, but I have loved a child who lived in my house for a long time.”</p>

Jennifer Love Hewitt

<p>Jennifer Love Hewitt is married to her former co-star, Brian Hallisay. The couple got married in November 2013 and welcomed their daughter, Autumn James Hallisay (age 9), one week later. <a href="https://soaps.sheknows.com/soaps/news/671790/jennifer-love-hewitt-children/">They also have sons</a> Atticus James Hallisay (age 7) and Aidan James Hallisay (age 1).</p> <p>Hewitt was pregnant with Aidan at the same time Maddie was pregnant in Season 4 of <em>9-1-1</em>, which aired from September 2021 to May 2022. Hewitt told <a href="https://soaps.sheknows.com/soaps/news/671790/jennifer-love-hewitt-children/#:~:text=2022%2C%20Hewitt%20told-,TV%20Line,-why%20she%20was"><em>TV Line</em></a> that her and Maddie’s pregnancies at the same time were coincidences. “When we started doing Maddie’s pregnancy storyline, I was not pregnant, but very quickly into that storyline, I found out that I was,” she explained. “So I was pregnant while she was pregnant. And with the timing of everything, I also ended up sort of being on my own postpartum journey as I was filming her postpartum episodes. It was very interesting timing throughout the whole thing for her and I.”</p>

Rockmond Dunbar and Maya-Gilbert

<p>Rockmond Dunbar, who played Michael Grant on <em>9-1-1</em>, is married to actress and writer Maya Gilbert. The duo tied the knot 2013 and have four children together: daughter Seon and sons Czar, Pharaoh and Sultan. In January 2022, the actor <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CYmp80Ipkg5/?hl=en">shared a photo</a> of his four children on his birthday. “Thank you for the wonderful Birthday wishes…. ASÈ #49 #birthdaydad,” he captioned the adorable picture.</p>

Ryan Guzman and Chrysti-Anne

<p>Ryan Guzman (aka firefighter Eddie Díaz on<em> 9-1-1</em>), recently broke up with his fiancée, Brazilian actress Chrysti Ane, according to <a href="https://www.hellomagazine.com/celebrities/492511/911-star-ryan-guzman-splits-from-fiance-chrysti-ane-after-five-years-together-two-children-all-we-know/"><em>Hello! Magazine</em></a>. The couple got engaged in 2019 – which is when they welcomed their first child together, Mateo. In January 2023, they had their daughter, Genevieve. Unfortunately, their wedding was postponed due to COVID and the couple couldn’t make it work. “They split a few weeks ago after lots of back and forth trying to make it work,” a source told the site. “There was no one else involved but Ryan had hit a wall in trying to fix what was broken. They are working on parenting their two children amicably.”</p> <p>Guzman’s ex Chrysti has shared a few photos of their two children on Instagram, including this <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CjgIwvMpsXV/">adorable picture</a> of Mateo and Genevieve at the Farmer’s Market.</p>

After 9-1-1's 'Huge Spectacle' Solution To The Cruise Ship Crisis, Oliver Stark Hypes An 'Intimate' 100th Episode

The cruise ship crisis is over, and the 100th episode is on the way next.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 of 9-1-1 Season 7, called "Capsized."

9-1-1 made its ABC debut in the 2024 TV schedule in a very big way with a cruise ship crisis for Bobby and Athena, hundreds of miles out at sea and far away from their usual crew of first responder friends. The three-part premiere event concluded on March 28 with "Capsized," which went even farther with the parallels to classic disaster film The Poseidon Adventure . The huge spectacle of crisis has finally been averted after some very close calls, and Oliver Stark – who plays Buck – opened up to CinemaBlend about the upcoming 100th episode , called "Buck, Bothered and Bewildered."

Athena and Bobby in 9-1-1 Season 7x03

How The 118 Saved Bobby, Athena, And The Day

Bobby and Athena had a misfit crew of survivors to try and lead to freedom at the top of the crippled cruise ship... which had previously been the bottom of the ship, prior to the pirates' bomb blowing a hole in it and a massive wave flipping it in the middle of a hurricane. It was more clear than ever why Peter Krause told us that he spent many days soaking wet while filming the premiere three-parter, and why Oliver Stark suggested that the cruise ship crisis was even bigger than the tsunami diaster .

Two of the survivors were killed in the effort to escape, but the others rescued a mother and her young son in the process. Even after Athena and the rest of the group (sans Bobby, who'd gone to find the little boy) made it to the hole in the ship, their only hope was that a rescue helicopter would see the one flare that they'd be able to fire up into the storm.

Luckily, that helicopter was carrying Hen, Chimney, Eddie, and Buck, who decided that they needed to land the chopper on the capsized ship and stage a rescue mission. Athena and Co. were pulled out of the hole, and Buck and Eddie went into the bowels of the ship just in time to open a hatch to rescue Bobby and the young boy.

The episode ended with Bobby and Athena back on dry land, ready for some 1:1 time (and fast food), and probably never planning to book a cruise ever again. What better way to set up a major milestone than with a happy ending? Even the people in the life boats survived!

Oliver Stark in 9-1-1 Season 7 as Buck

Oliver Stark Previews The 100th Episode

Not many shows will hit 100 episodes nowadays, let alone shows that have already been cancelled once. Of course, ABC picked up 9-1-1 immediately after it was cut from fox, and Peter Krause explained the on-set celebration of the milestone was "fifteen minutes to have some cake and went back to work." When I spoke with Oliver Stark about what he could share for the 100th episode, he said:

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

I think one of the nicest things about the episode for me is that it's just character driven. This show has had huge spectacle over the years, but I don't think it would have lasted if we didn't love the people. You have to care about the characters that are running into these huge, high octane situations. Otherwise, you'd lose interest fairly quickly. So I think that 100th episode leaning into the characters is a really smart way to go and a really apt way to kind of memorialize those 100 episodes. It's an intimate episode, but I think that's a testament to the love that has grown for these characters, and I think it will really do it justice.

Any viewer who has seen even a single episode of 9-1-1 can vouch that Oliver Stark isn't kidding about the "huge spectacle" of the show, particularly after a premiere event at sea. But the show is going for a more "intimate episode" to celebrate hitting 100, with more of a focus on the characters than the crises of the week. It's safe to expect some problems for the crew of first responders, but it bodes well that the star feels that it will do the show justice.

It's kind of surreal, to be honest with you. Like, I don't quite know how to process that in my head. In one hand, it feels like we've been doing the show forever, and then on the other hand, it feels like we just started it. But you're right. It's seen us through really uncertain times. As you mentioned, the pandemic and the strike and we've had this show, and it's seen us through that. We have actors and I know writers that have really struggled through those times, and we've kind of been insulated from that.

9-1-1 lasting to seven seasons and more than 100 episodes is particularly impressive in light of complications across the entertainment industry over the years since its premiere 2018. First, the COVID-19 production shutdowns didn't make filming any easier, and then the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike put filming on hold for months. When I noted the obstacles that 9-1-1 has overcome, Stark commented:

We kept working basically through the pandemic. We had a few extra months off, but we were on hiatus anyway at the beginning of it. So we had maybe two extra months, and then we got back to work. It's been truly life changing and life saving in many ways to have the stability of this show and the stability of the people that are associated with this show. And I'm just grateful more than anything and having a really great time being able to make it.

The cast of 9-1-1 has largely remained the same since back in Season 2, when Jennifer Love Hewitt joined as Maddie Buckley and Ryan Guzman joined as Eddie Diaz, the latter of whom has been a major part of Buck's stories over the years since. As for how everybody will be involved in the 100th episode, be sure to watch and find out! For now, here's the promo, complete with a Bachelor crossover:

Tune in to ABC on Thursday, April 4 at 8 p.m. ET for the 100th episode of 9-1-1 , ahead of Grey's Anatomy at 9 p.m. and Station 19 at 10 p.m. You can also revisit the first 99 episodes streaming with a Hulu subscription .

Paris Fury takes aim at 'parent-police' as she shares video of two-year-old daughter swearing

Paris Fury takes aim at 'parent-police' as she shares video of two-year-old daughter swearing

Raising children whilst in the celebrity spotlight is undoubtedly a daunting prospect.

As if the job of parenting isn't hard enough, with intrusive fan-bases, tabloid speculation and meddlesome paparazzi around every corner, it often seems as though A-list mums and dads can't win - no matter what they do.

What one follower would describe as an impressive parenting hack , another would describe as child abuse .

But that's just the way things go for parents in the spotlight, isn't it? Part of the job?

Well, apparently, one big-name mother-of-seven is this week sticking two fingers up to the online 'parent-police' by sharing a rather controversial video.

Paris Fury - TV star and wife of boxing champion Tyson Fury - has never been one to shy away from the brutal realities of raising six children - all of whom are under the age of 18.

So much so, that she even released a book all about it , titled How Does She Do It?, the synopsis of which reads: "Looking after seven children, keeping house, looking amazing, being there for her World Heavyweight husband Tyson, and finding time for herself: this is just a shortlist of what Paris manages.

“She learned her great homemaking skills in her Gypsy childhood and here she shares all about daily life with the big Fury family and what works to keep life running.

"From shopping, mealtimes and big celebrations, to being ready for the unexpected, handling a crisis, and her tricks for keeping their home clean and uncluttered, as well as warm and welcoming."

And with her often-chaotic household in mind, this week she has rightfully instilled in herself a 'no f*****s given' attitude by sharing an iconic video of her infant daughter Athena dropping the s-bomb.

In a clip shared to Instagram, the troublesome two-year-old could be seen pretending to have conversation with someone on a fake phone.

As mum Paris alerts her followers to turn the volume up to watch the rib-tickling video, the tot can seen pointing to the floor before exclaiming into the device: "That's dog s**t."

Audibly finding it funny, Paris then tells her daughter, 'No!', before clarifying to her viewers: "Parent-police - we are teaching her it’s not called that."

With an embarrassed-face emoji, she penned in the caption: "Such an angel with that mouth".

Paris and sportsman Tyson are also parents to Venezuela, 13, Prince John James, 11, Prince Tyson II, seven, Valencia, five, Prince Adonis Amaziah, four, Athena, two, and Prince Rico Paris, seven-months.

9-1-1 boss breaks down the deadly cruise ship disaster finale — and what didn't make the final cut

The ABC first-responder drama's co-creator and showrunner, Tim Minear, also teases what's to come in season 7.

cruise ship athena

After three hours of pirates, explosions, and lots of water , 9-1-1 fans finally know who survived the epic, three-part season 7 premiere .

"It all happened really fast," co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear tells Entertainment Weekly of completing the cruise ship disaster episodes. "It was very difficult, and you always have that moment where you're just like, 'Am I going to be able to pull this off?'"

It may have felt quick, but getting Bobby ( Peter Krause ) and Athena ( Angela Bassett ) out of that sinking vessel actually took months of filming... and none of it on an actual cruise ship. As the series moves forward on dry land (though on one very wet driveway, with the Bachelor crossover coming next week ), we asked Minear to break down the deadly three-epsiode event, reveal what ideas never made it to air, and tease what's to come in the rest of season 7.

Chris Willard/Disney

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This was a big undertaking...

TIM MINEAR: Shooting Bobby and Athena on a honeymoon cruise was more challenging than many things I've done on this show in the last seven seasons. We never got an actual cruise ship, so we had to shoot in hotels and on different types of vessels, and then [use] special effects and CGI. But just the idea of that surprised me. I thought that would be easy: You'd rent a cruise ship, you'd shoot on it for three days, you'd get a lot of stuff on the decks. But it just didn't turn out that way. It was very difficult to get a cruise ship. No cruise line wanted to be associated with a capsized ship, which I guess I can understand.

Well it all made for a very dramatic three episodes. So many massive sets, so much rising water.

The water's not actually rising, the set is sinking! The set was built on a gimbal inside a water tank. We would slowly lower the set into the tank, and it gives the effect that the water's rising around them. And the casino set.... The lowering of the table with Norman [played by Daniel Roebuck] on it, that was complicated to write, and it was very complicated to shoot. But that's Peter up there. Peter is climbing across those ropes up there — that delighted me.

The other thing that absolutely delighted me was that Angela Bassett was game for anything. She went into that water. When the bomb goes off in episode 2, and she goes flying against that wall, she actually did it! There's a stunt woman in there too, but Angela, she was game for anything.

Was there anything you wanted to do with this disaster that you weren't able to?

There was one scene that I did have to cut, that I was sad to cut. It was when Wes [played by Denzel Johnson] opens the door and that fireball comes out. Originally in the script, they still continued in that direction, and when they looked into that room, it was an upside down restaurant and the water was on fire. And so it's like, "How do we get to the other side of the restaurant and stop the gas that is feeding this fire?" And in the scene, in the script, Lola [played by Romy Rosemont] actually dives under the fire and swims under the water to turn it off. It was very Shelley Winters [in The Poseidon Adventure .]

Time and money just prohibited that from happening, so I made a little bit more of Wes' death. And then did give Lola an opportunity to retrieve the flare gun later in the episode, so she still got to go underwater. But that was a moment that I was sad to lose. And I know Romy was too, but she still got a little bit of action there at the end.

So now that Bobby and Athena are rescued, what can you tease about the rest of the season?

I just finished locking episode 4 and I was like, "Hmm, there's no natural disasters. Things aren't blowing up all over the place." But there is the Bachelor crossover, so we have that to look forward to. And now we get to spend a little time breathing with the 118 and dig into their personal stories a little bit more. Yeah, I don't know how much I should spoil.... Definitely a beloved character will be returning in episode 4, I can put it that way....

Peter Krause Performs a Wild Upside-Down Rescue in '9-1-1's Cruise Episodes

The Big Picture

  • Peter Krause faces challenging stunts navigating an upside-down casino in the cruise ship disaster.
  • Krause also remembers his toughest shoot and reveals which person on the cast he wants to share a scene with.

It's been a crazy couple of weeks since 9-1-1 returned to our lives, and true to form, the firefighter procedural drama series did not hold back for Season 7. The show kicks off with a bang as Bobby ( Peter Krause ) and Athena's ( Angela Bassett ) honeymoon cruise takes a turn for the worse when a group of pirates attacks the cruise ship. Then, with a looming Category 5 hurricane about to hit the ship, not only do the ship's passengers have to depend on our favorite first responders, but Bobby and Athena will have to depend on each other.

We spoke with Peter Krause about the cruise ship episodes, and he teased a little bit about his stunt work. We last saw Bobby and Athena flipped upside-down on the cruise ship , and Krause described a particularly challenging stunt he had to perform to help one of the passengers who had been shot. Krause also emphasized that Bobby and Athena would be stronger after the disaster . As we saw in Episode 1 "Abandon Ships," the two of them are not having the best honeymoon, even before the pirates arrive.

Krause also talked about the eventual reunion with the Firehouse Five, hinting at a new call that seems to put the team in an unusual position. He talked a little bit about the switch in networks from Fox to ABC . Season 7 is officially the first season 9-1-1 is part of ABC after moving over from Fox. Finally, he reminisced on the most memorable disaster he's filmed on the show and told us which cast member he wanted a scene with that he's never gotten one with. Read the full interview below.

Explores the high-pressure experiences of the first responders who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking, and heart-stopping situations.

Athena and Bobby Will Be Stronger Than Ever After the Cruise Disaster

COLLIDER: I just wanted to talk a little bit about that cruise storyline. How was it filming those three episodes, and also were there any moments that you were surprised by?

PETER KRAUSE: Ah, well, I've been working with Tim Minear for a while now. So, even though I am surprised, it's not surprising if that makes any sense. But the filming of the episodes has been a blast; it's been very difficult, some wonderful stunts. It's been a dream for me to get to work this much with Angela [Bassett]. This is the longest extended storyline we've had together , and the whole thing really plays like an action romantic-comedy and disaster film, I guess. All the above.

I'm really looking forward to that storyline and seeing what comes from that, because I'm interested in hearing your opinion about Bobby's relationship with Athena. That's one of my favorite relationships on this show. I was a little worried in that first episode, but I know we'll make it through this stronger. I'm interested to hear your take on their relationship and the direction that's going.

KRAUSE: By the end of the three episodes, Athena and Bobby are closer than ever . It was a real joy to get to do the romantic-comedy aspects and, obviously, the action stuff is a lot of fun, too. It's a very, very demanding shoot for both Angela and I. But some highlights were being caught in the bilge room together with the water rising. And certainly being trapped inside the upside-down casino on the ship.

Upcoming Episodes Feature Bobby Traversing Through an Upside-Down Casino in the Cruise Ship

Was there a lot of a lot of physical action? Were you doing things that you hadn't done before? Obviously, this is a very physical show, but was there a new challenge when filming these specific episodes?

KRAUSE: It was pretty challenging doing some of the stunt work , in the harness, in the upside-down world. I had to travel from an upside-down poker table to an upside-down roulette table to rescue an individual who is strapped to the roulette table who had been shot. And then the water work, you know, you're wet, but this particular water work, we had warmer water than we did in the first season when we did the plane crash, which was nice. It was a little more comfortable.

The Firehouse Five Will Reunite on a Very Unusual Call

It really sounds like they put you through the wringer for this. Switching gears, I love the relationship that Bobby has with the 118, especially with characters like Buck, who I think he's like a mentor to. And Hen, because they have that relationship of both being captains. Can you talk a little bit about if any of those relationships develop?

KRAUSE: We really have been so focused on the first three episodes and my workload demands have been so great, I am not in the next episodes as much. But I was very happy when the firehouse five all got to get together and deal with a very interesting situation where a woman is, well, she's a jumper on the top of a building, but she's holding somebody hostage, which it's a very unusual set of circumstances, which I can't talk about. But that was our first time all five of us back together again .

Is There Anything in Bobby's Past To Explore?

Are there any storylines that you want to explore? Obviously, we've looked a lot into his past with his addiction storyline. But I feel like there's so much unmined territory. Is there something that you've always wanted to know about or dig deeper into?

KRAUSE: Well, he has such a tragic past, of course, I think that, you know, largely, Bobby Nash's storyline in the show has been about moving forward, and the healing aspects of being embraced by his firehouse family, and obviously, his family at home, and Athena. So, I don't know that we're going to look back on Bobby's path. I think it's something that he's tried hard to let go of and move on from, but we'll see. Who knows, maybe Tim will come up with something that I'm unaware of.

'9-1-1' Does a Little Bit of Everything and Is Getting Bigger and Better with the Move to ABC

When I watch 9-1-1 , I think it really stands out from some of the other procedural television shows. Do you have an opinion on why you think 9-1-1 is such a standout from some of the other television that we watch?

KRAUSE: I think our storytelling canvas is just so broad. And, you know, nobody else is making these disaster movies. You know, we've done an earthquake, tidal wave. Now we're doing this homage to The Poseidon Adventure . And I think that, you know, it's the mixture of comedy and drama. And again, we do romance. We do thriller, we do action, we do horror. And I think that we have a lot more space to cover. But the disaster movies that we kicked each season off with, I think that that's a game changer. Our show gets bigger and crazier.

Did you find any differences since moving over to ABC? Has it been relatively the same or have you seen improvements?

KRAUSE: I mean, ABC is very excited, and they're definitely behind the show. They've been doing an awful lot of promotion. But with Dana Walden — moving over from Fox to Disney, I think there's been a tremendous amount of continuity. And so, you know, there's been nothing disruptive. It's all been smooth sailing. And, certainly, in terms of the size of the emergencies and things like that, I think we're starting this year with the biggest emergency we've ever done in the first three episodes. And I think it's gonna outdo the tidal wave.

Well, the tidal wave was a big thing!

KRAUSE: Yeah, the tsunami was huge, but this is equal, if not greater.

'9-1-1's Showrunner Confirms That Big 'Bachelor' Crossover

Peter krause recalls the stand-out disaster for him and who he'd like to work with on the show.

After all of these episodes and seeing all of these different incidents and situations, do you have one that really stands out to you in your memory — either from a filming perspective, as an actor, or just a story perspective?

KRAUSE: I think the most difficult thing we ever did was the airplane disaster in Season 1. That was a difficult shoot, because of lots of reasons, but cold air temperatures, the water wasn't as warm, we weren't enclosed like we were in this run of episodes, we were outside. But we filmed that out in the ocean by the airport, and then they dug a giant hole at Disney Ranch. It had to be big enough for a plane and to have more water around it. That was a really difficult shoot. Cold and wet.

Well, I'm glad it wasn't that bad this time with the water. There are so many pairings and partnerships in this show, as I mentioned, like Bobby and Buck, or his relationship with Athena. Is there a character that you haven't had time to spend with on-screen or [that] you haven't had scenes with that you would like to?

KRAUSE: I don't know how they'd do it, but Jennifer Love Hewitt and I never get to work with each other.

9-1-1 fans can breathe a massive sigh of relief after Thursday’s conclusion to the season’s three-part premiere, now that Bobby and Athena are finally back on land — and back in the saddle. (Bow-chicka-bow-wow!)

Of course, not everyone fared quite as well as the 118’s Mom and Dad this week. For starters, remember that guy who “just wanted to cash out” on the ship? Well, he cashed out all right… from life. He was the episode’s first official victim, leaving just a handful of survivors to make their way off the boat.

Back on land, Hen was determined to promote the rescue efforts, even if she had to take some back channels to get there. But even she wasn’t expecting to run into former 118-er Tommy Kinard (played by Lou Ferrigno Jr.), who played along without hesitation and got Hen on an LAFD helicopter down to Mexico. And Hen was even more surprised to find Buck, Eddie and Chimney already seated in Tommy’s chopper; they weren’t about to send her into a hurricane all by her lonesome.

“Originally, when the 118 needed a pilot to get them to that overturned cruise ship, Lucy was my first thought,” showrunner Tim Minear tells TVLine of Arielle Kebbel’s character, now a member of the LAFD’s air support team. “But she couldn’t be my pilot… because she got a pilot,” he adds, referring to Kebbel’s casting in the Fox lifeguard drama Rescue: HI-Surf.

Minear still needed a pilot, and he “didn’t just want it to be some generic pilot guy that they enlist.” He wanted it to be somebody “who had a connection to the lore of the show.” That’s when Tommy popped into his mind.

In the end, Athena sent up a last-minute flare, alerting the 118 to her location and ensuring that no one else’s life would be lost. Yes, that includes Norman, who somehow managed to survive this ordeal despite bleeding out from a gunshot wound for two straight episodes. Then again, we’re more surprised that his marriage with Lola remained in tact after all of this.

So, what’s next for the 118 after this harrowing ordeal? Next week marks the show’s buzzy “crossover” with The Bachelor , with several of the firefighters responding to an emergency at the reality show’s iconic mansion.

And we can also expect to see more of Tommy. “He’s going to be around for a little bit,” Minear tells TVLine. “He’s not going to be a member of the 118 again, but he is going to be involved in some stories.”

Your thoughts on the 9-1-1 premiere’s dramatic conclusion? Grade it below, then drop a comment with your hopes for the rest of the season.

When the music started playing I half expected to hear Morning After from Poseidon just to be more morbid, I’m kind of glad they didn’t

The Buck and Tommy shot at the end have me thinking they gonna have a connection lol

Wasn’t Tommy still on the 118 when Buck started working there or was it just Chim and Hen? I saw it as the old team getting back together more than anything.

Is that me or Buck and Tommy shared a moment at the end? Why Norman still married to lola? I’m so happy Athena is back on land.

Um, definitely not just you…I’m screaming right now?! LOL. Great episode…Athena and Bobby were SO good together (they’re always good, obviously, but I loved them so much tonight).

this show is never going to give us proper gay male representation…just endless teases from buck/eddie/tommy/whomever. lol

The way I screamed when Buck said “need a lift, Cap?” whime standing shoulder to shoulder with Eddie to save Bobby. I’m glad my neighbors didn’t call 9-1-1. Lol

When the hatch opened to reveal his team I cried. Cried HARD. I knew it was coming but still, I just love them so much.

Poor Wes. IMO, death was too good for Julian. “Hey, Cap.”…two of the best words that were said tonight.

Another great episode.

Are we really supposed to believe that Athena would truly not trust herself to fire a flare into a HUGE hole? The character assassination with 1 line was terrible.

You’ll obviously disagree, but imo, considering the fact that in reality, even the strongest and bravest of people are sometimes capable of having uncharacteristic moments of self doubt or even fear, it can certainly be accepted/believed in a scripted reality.

I don’t think it was out of character. They had one shot. Just one shot. If she slipped or the ship tilted, they were dead. It wasn’t she thought she would miss it was that they only had one chance. And, lo and behold, that happened. Only then was she like, “screw it, I’ve got this”.

They were all way too calm during that whole thing… and most of those life boats should have sunk. Really could have been more believable.

The conclusion to the three part cruise ship disaster was a huge let down and it was underwhelming. After episode two, I was excited to see how it would end but it was choppy and there were plotholes everywhere. The 118 seemed like they were an afterthought and they were just there in the helicopter waiting for Hen but how did they know where she was going? Maddie didn’t even know where she was so it’s interesting they just knew she’d be at air rescue. Hen wasn’t part of the actual rescue and it didn’t seem necessarily beneficial for five people to fly into a hurricane just so they can tout and say they saved Bobby (for the third time in three seasons) and Athena. It was cool to see Bobby do a rope rescue but the rest could have been ommitted. Why was so much time spent on the family with their son Corey? Those scenes could have been left out or introduced before episode three so it wouldn’t have taken up so much time. Furthermore, entirely too much time was given to Tommy Kinard and the show will be better off once he’s gone and he can take Marisol with him. At first I was glad Tim returned but now not so much because he’s doing the same thing Kristen did by focusing on side characters who should have quick storylines and be gone. I don’t care about Norman, Lola, Tommy, Shannon, Connor, Kameron or Marisol or any other recurring characters that haven’t been there since the beginning like Karen because the ensemble cast is large enough. They got more screen time than her. Also, Tim said Lucy was supposed to come back (glad she’s not and she can stay away) but since she’s on another show he brought Tommy back. Everyone should know he’s big on name recognition so bringing back the TV star who played The Hulk’s son is the only reason why he chose him. Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers remember the name Lou Ferigno but that’s his dad. The sooner Tommy leaves the better and if he was brought buck so Buck can hook up with him then it will be Buck 1.0 all over again just with a man instead of him being with random women. Those who are rooting for Buck and Tommy to get together seem to only want Buck to be with a man, any man and it doesn’t matter which one as long as it’s a man. They must have forgotten about Eddie, the man he’s in love with. This storyline isn’t needed because if someone in the viewing audience hasn’t picked up on the fact that Buck is bi they never will because they’re choosing not to see it, the same way they’ve chosen not to see Buck and Eddie romantically. They’ll never be convinced so why try? And the Bachelor crossover is pointless too. It was JLH’s idea but why? It’s just a waste of time because contrary to popular belief, everyone doesn’t watch reality TV and I’ll be skipping next week’s episode especially with that Buck and Tommy BS. It’s sad the 100th episode is going to be another fluke like his coma dream.

We get it, the only reason you watch the show is because you ship Buddie. But most of the viewing audience doesn’t exist in fandom circles, and I hate to break it to you, but that’s who the show is catered towards.

First of all, I watch the show because I like it so don’t try to insinuate anything about why I watch because you don’t know me. My assessment was fair and balanced and not once did I mention Buddie as a ship. I said I don’t like useless recurring characters but apparently you do so good for you. Second of all you’re probably one of those audience members who sees Buck and Eddie as friends because you have self-inserted yourself in bed with them. If you would have read my entire post instead of skimming it like it was cliff notes then you would know that I didn’t like the episode because it was discombobulated and there were potholes in it but you’re one of those who sees what you want to see so kick rocks and beat it please and take several seats.

Funny that you spout off about me insinuating things then go ahead and do the exact same thing with even less to back you up. You didn’t have to mention Buddie. The second you went off on how much Tommy was featured, and the ‘Buck and Tommy BS’ that isn’t even on the general audience’s radar, you made it incredibly obvious you’re a shipper. It’s not subtle. I don’t ship Buddie because I personally can’t stand Buck. I’m all for a repressed Eddie storyline if the show ever decides to go there, and honestly I don’t mind if Buddie eventually becomes a thing, it’s just not a pairing that I’m gunning for myself. I did read your whole rant. I actually agreed with some of it. But this show has always focused on the emergencies. That’s how it started. We fell in love with the main characters and it’s natural that we want to see more of their storylines, but the emergencies are always going to be what’s heavily featured, and that means there will always be a lot of secondary characters featured. If you take away the scenes that humanize the people going through a crisis, it takes away the emotion behind them being saved. People used to blame Kristen Reidel, and she certainly had her issues. But now that Tim is back in charge, and that’s still the format, maybe it’s time for people to accept it.

This will be my last reply to you! Here’s and idea, instead of you analyzing and critiquing my post, why don’t you create your own that allows you to explain why you believe the episode was good? I guess you won’t since all you want to do is argue and try to prove a point, even though I’m not sure what that is. I’m part of 9-1-1’s audience just like you but I’m not part of the fandom so it’s perplexing to me why people can’t just state their opinions without someone like you trying to force them to think the way you do. Unless you work for the show, your ideas about each episode are just like mine, an opinion which means their yours and yours alone. But also you should remember no one has to agree with you just like no one has to agree me. I watched the episode, I included multiple reasons why I didn’t like it and why I don’t like Tommy Kinard. Nothing has changed since I wrote my original post last night, I still don’t like the character and I won’t no matter how long he stays around, therefore you and no one else can convince me otherwise. Furthermore, I don’t do back and forths or argue because it’s unnecessary and it’s a waste of my time. Finally, I’ll end with this final question/quote from Joan Collins in a movie from the 1950s. “What’s the matter “anon” did I hit a nerve?” LOL. I suppose I did since you won’t just accept that we don’t agree on this specific topic. You’re more than welcome to type a post that explains why you liked episode three if you choose. And now you can because I included what I typed in my orginal post because that’s how I viewed the episode as being discombobulated, disjointed and underwhelming and it included three recurring characters I’d rather not see on my screen again but you’re the one won’t move on.

Girls! Girls! You’re both pretty!

@AJ, I for some reason can’t reply to your post, but thanks for that, it gave me a really good laugh. I’m not upset, nor am I really trying to change anyone’s minds. I have literally no stake in this game since I watch 9-1-1 to get a good laugh at how poorly researched their responses to the emergencies are, and that won’t be changing anytime soon. Somewhere along the line I fell in love with most of the characters too. But the shipper drama in this fandom has gotten so toxic. People need to take a deep breath.

Some of you need to calm down and let this play out. Buddie is a beautiful relationship that I fully support but it’s not easy to bring two canonically straight characters together, especially when they weren’t as close as usual in recent seasons. A lot of people see romantic chemistry and subtext in their scenes but a lot of people don’t. You need a story like this to show people it’s actually a possibility and not just bros. You are going to sabotage it by attacking and downvoting anyone who says a positive thing about a new character or bisexual story because it’s not immediately what you want. I can promise, the people in charge will just view it as objections to the bisexuality aspect and you will never see what you want.

As I mentioned in my original post, those who don’t see it are choosing not to and it’s likely if they do, they don’t want it to happen for whatever reason. Also, just because you think it has to go a certain way for the audience to understand it doesn’t make it so. And just so you know, based on the synopsis for episode 4, Buck and Tommy probably won’t be a thing since Buck’s going to be jealous of Eddie’s bond with Tommy. I won’t be responding to anymore of your replies so don’t waste your time. You can continue to watch the show how you want to and I’ll do the same.

Why don’t you get a job as a writer and then write the show yourself. All the things going on in the world today and you can just relax for an hour and not complain whine and just escape into a tv show. Goodness some of you need some serious therapy.

I know you were trying to be SARCASTIC but I can too and this response is just for you.

I would ABSOLUTELY love to write for 9-1-1 and I bet you would love every episode because I would make sure the timing and pacing was were it used to be in seasons 2 and 3. And maybe you should take your own advice about needing therapy especially if you need to watch a TV show to escape your life. I won’t respond to anymore of your responses because I need to fill out an application to become a writer for 9-1-1.

Wow! Wow! Wow! 911 hit it out of the park with these three episodes. Well done!

Who would have thought that 911 could have switch networks and still be wonderful

Same writers, same cast. Why would the network it airs on matter?

Same writers, same cast, but different network execs. Different network execs can sometimes have different demands and expectations. In this case that doesn’t seem to apply.

Love this show.

I just love all thecast on this show and just love my Diva Angela Bassett ❤️ love love this show i watch all the past episodes on Hulu

This show no longer appears to be a drama show but is bordering on becoming a comedy. They should have hired a technical consultant on cruises before filming this arc. The lifeboats used were a joke, straight out of what was used in the days of the Titanic. Modern day lifeboats are enclosed and they each have a transponder (which could have been used to track the ship) and emergency beacons. The fact that power was still on in the ship was a joke also. I can suspend a little disbelief for a story but they are pushing the limits. And the previews for the next episode show they will also go down the comedy line by crossing over with The Bachelor and someone gluing themselves to the driveway.

I read an article that said none of the scenes were filmed on an actual cruise ship and it makes so much sense now.

I didn’t understand what the crooks was looking for to shoot up the ship and shooting people. However I am happy Athena and Bobby are safe and at home.

They wanted a flashdrive with access to millions of dollars of cryptocurrency on it. They thought Norman had it, but it was actually the cruise director.

Thank God 911 is back!!! Thank you ABC!!! Keep it coming!!!!

Worst three episodes of this series which I love. It felt like a horrible remake of the Poseidon Adventure. Too far fetched! Too many things happened at once: terrorists, hurricane, ship flipped over, etc. Get back to basics. 911 can do better than that.

I didn’t hate the episodes but I do agree that too many things were happening at once. They could have bypassed the entire terrorists storyline and stuck with the weather in my opinion. I suspect that we will see or hear something about that storyline later in the season since the bad guys got away…….

If it wasn’t for the terrorists, they wouldn’t have been in the path of the hurricane (since they were turning the ship around) so none of that would have happened.

I LOVE 911 BEEN WATCHING IT FROM THE FRIST EPISODE THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW.

Laughable script, terrible acting and ridiculous premise. It is 3 hrs of my life I can’t get back. The show previously was entertaining but not any more.

I don’t like tearing shows apart. I’m watching 911 because I love the show, and it helps me to escape what is going on in my life. Yes, there was some things that stuck out to me but it’s a tv show not a movie. 911 is my favorite show. I will continue watching as long as they remain making shows. Thank you ABC for keeping it alive.

I loved the cruise episodes, they were really well done but I’m happy they are going back to regular episodes next week. I’m excited for the 100th episode.

Well, it was different, but I felt like it verged on being ridiculous. Good thing they have a solid cast because they saved a ludicrous story line. I’m just glad they didn’t do the Shelley Winters swimming under water stuff.

The part 3 episodes for 911 was really good. The love scenes were dope and I like the pair Athena and Bobby. The boat cruise was exciting and full of excitement and edge to seats moments. The entire show is great. Being a first responder myself I love what I do. Kuddos to the writers and production team and all of the cast and crew.

Love this show, how can one watch the shows that already aired??

As usual the show had every component. There was suspense comedy and drama. As I always root for the underdog. And I love the compilation of characters that make the show a sensational hit. I love to see more of Tommy as he was the knight in shining armor that came in to rescue the crew

19 Things You Should Steer Clear Of Doing On A Cruise

Posted: February 8, 2024 | Last updated: February 8, 2024

Cruise-ship etiquette reaches beyond proper attire and not fraternizing with the staff, and many of these points are things you wouldn't necessarily consider to be improper. So whether you consider yourself a seasoned sea traveler or this is your first experience on a cruise, being privy to these obscure guidelines and things you should NEVER do while cruising the seas will make your vacation experiences the dream you always envisioned it would be.

Oops Where's My Passport

This one seems like it would be common sense, however not everyone thinks of a cruise the same way they do when flying to a foreign country. While you can go on a cruise without your passport, it does require the right paperwork to do so, not to mention if you get left at a foreign port you will definitely need your passport to fly back home.

To be on the safe side and avoid any hiccups, keep your passport and government issued ID on you. Your boarding and travel will be seamless if you don't skip this simple step.

<p>Sadly this is common, many people lose their sense of safety when they are traveling to the destination of their dreams. Don't get lost in the scenery, I promise there isn't a selfie or Tik Tok post that is worth risking your health over.</p><p>Royal Caribbean keeps it pretty straight forward : "Sitting, standing, jumping, laying or climbing on, over or across any exterior or interior railings or other protective barriers is strictly prohibited" and they have zero qualms strictly enforcing their policies.</p>

Discard Yourself Or Anything Else Overboard

The crew of the ships take this extremely seriously, passengers that break the strictly enforced rule have been subjected to fines, and in more severe situations even asked to leave the cruise at the port.

There are a lot of finite details when it comes to what is and isn't appropriate attire with each of your cruise destinations. So before you pack your bags look into what is expected.

Typically a cruise line will help you out in this department, Royal Caribbean's website has references that state "Please note camouflage print clothing and accessories, as well as military-style clothing, is illegal in Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. This style of clothing is reserved only for members of the military at these destinations." Just look into it before you head off into the sunset, you will only make your travel experience more enjoyable by doing so.

Being Late to Board

Being promptly on time isn't really a loose request when it comes to cruises, they run an extremely tight ship, and showing up anytime after the expected time is considered unacceptable.

If you think you are under the impression that you can just mosey on your back even a few minutes later, you may very well find yourself standing on the dock without a ship to board. Just ask the passengers who have had to fly back home after being left at port for being late to reboarding after an excursion.

How did ‘9-1-1’ make it to 100 episodes “it’s characters that you want in your living room”.

Angela Bassett and co-creator Tim Minear say relatable people in wholly unrelatable situations were the secret sauce behind ABC’s popular first-responders procedural.

Bassett and Krause play first responders on their honeymoon when their cruise ship explodes in the season seven premiere.

When 9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear signed up on Twitter (now known as X), he chose a telling handle to denote his legacy as a screenwriter and director: @Cancelledagain. “I was sort of infamous for all of my thundering failures over the years,” explains Minear. “ Firefly lasted one season, Terriers one season, The Inside one season, Drive went for six episodes. Everything was canceled, so I just called myself ‘cancelled again,’ which actually worked out for me because these are all beloved little cult shows now.”

Since the series debut on Jan. 3, 2018, the procedural drama about L.A. first responders starring Angela Bassett and Peter Krause has built a reputation for taking natural catastrophes and emergency scenarios to the next level. “I can’t name another show on television that has tackled tsunamis, earthquakes, blackouts, a blimp stadium crash, a train derailment, a Hollywood dam collapse and landslide, sharks on a freeway, escaped zoo animals, an airplane crash into the ocean, a guy falling off a roller coaster, a bus crash into a side of a building, a fire truck hanging off a cliff, and now, in your season opener, a honeymoon cruise disaster complete with pirates, explosions and a capsized ship — spanning three episodes,” Karey Burke, president of 20th Television, said March 5 at 9-1-1 ’s 100th episode celebration that took place in between filming at the Bel-Air Bay Club.

It’s the believability of the characters in these stories and the visual execution of cataclysmic disasters — a testament to the creators’ philosophy of using practical effects as much as possible — that made 9-1-1 ripe for pickup when Fox failed to renew it in May after six seasons. The decision was reported to be financial, as the show remained the network’s most watched series overall and top-rated scripted series with adults 18-49 until the end. This was what Murphy set out to achieve when he first pitched the series — which draws inspiration from the 1970s NBC medical drama Emergency! — to then Fox executive and now Disney entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden. “Ryan really wanted to give her a network hit. He’s literally the only showrunner or creator that I know who can go, ‘You know what, I think it’s time to create a hit for Dana for Fox’ and do it,” says Minear.

The March 14 season seven premiere, a nod to The Poseidon Adventure , brought in 4.93 million viewers, up from season six’s 4.8 million. After three days of viewing across ABC, Hulu and other Disney digital platforms, the episode garnered a total of 8.85 million viewers, setting a streaming record for Disney.

Having cemented audiences’ interest with the high-stakes cruise ship fiasco as the season opener, Minear chose to focus on the other element of 9-1-1 that makes it a win among viewers for its 100th episode, which was directed by Lone Star ’s Chad Lowe: its cast. The story will center on the LAFD crew at Station 118 who rescues a woman intent on receiving a rose at an iconic mansion. “After doing a giant three-episode arc of a disaster for the first three episodes, when I got to episode 100, it was important that it be a regular episode,” says Minear. “You just need to say, this is what the show is. It’s character stories.”

That’s what’s made portraying LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Grant-Nash for seven seasons most rewarding for Bassett. It’s the longest role she’s ever played. “It’s very interesting to have a character that’s so beloved keep finding stories to tell, important stories to tell, and fun stories to tell,” she says.

“I enjoy the idea of blended family and exploring the changing dynamics between a husband and wife, and divorce,” Bassett adds. “I think that’s important because when people grow apart, families don’t have to break up, even after so much trauma.”

The close friendship between “Thena” and “Hen” (Aisha Hinds’ Henrietta Wilson), an openly gay firefighter paramedic — they bond over being Black women in white, male-dominated fields — is adored by viewers. “These are people who get misunderstood themselves,” says Bassett. “The most important thing I wanted people to see in portraying a Black female police officer is the compassion and the understanding that the job says that we are here to protect and to serve.”

The bromance between Evan Buckley (Oliver Stark) and Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman), known as “Buddie,” is another fan favorite. Audiences have been trying to ship the duo since they first met in the season two premiere, with Minear jokingly adding fuel to the fire in the 2019 midseason finale when he allowed the pair to be mistaken for a couple. But it’s the story arc of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Maddie Buckley, a trained nurse who works as a 9-1-1 operator, that he’s most enjoyed carrying out onscreen.

These storylines, Minear says, are what ultimately has led 9-1-1 to 100 episodes and counting. “It’s characters that you want in your living room, a found family of heroes, people that run toward danger,” he says. “We’re coming off of this incredible age of Breaking Bad and The Shield and these kind of morally compromised heroes, but there’s nothing morally compromised about our heroes. They are heroes. They are there to save you, whether they like you or not.”
