What’s the culture and history of New York?

Native American groups have lived in the area now known as New York for thousands of years, and European settlement of the area didn’t begin until the 15th century. In the 1600s, the Dutch West India Company began a colony called “New Amsterdam” and expanded their living quarters into what we know now as Manhattan. The local population boomed, and the New Amsterdam area became known as a trade hub between the Dutch, Europeans, and the New World. By the mid-1600s, the British took control and kept it until after the Revolutionary War. During the 19th century, the melting pot of New York that the city is now famous for began to take shape as Ellis Island welcomed millions of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Germany. People from around the world settled throughout the five boroughs. Today, New York symbolizes the promise of an America with open arms for all types of people, and New York’s food, attractions, and cultural institutions celebrate that diversity. 

Where can I go shopping near the cruise port?

For a glimpse of New York’s famous shopping scene, find a nearby subway station and head to Fifth Avenue or Madison Avenue, where you’ll find every luxury brand under the sun. SoHo boasts many of the biggest names and rising brands in fashion and design, while the windows of famous department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdales attract thousands of eyes during the an. Of course, souvenir shacks with memorabilia of the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and the Chrysler Building aren’t hard to find either.

How can I get around New York City?

Getting to New York City from the cruise terminal is easy. There are several options including hailing a taxi, taking a train on the PATH Rapid Transit System train to Manhattan, or boarding a bus that will drop you off in the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Once you are there, the options for getting around the five boroughs are plentiful, as New York has one of the most comprehensive public transit systems in the U.S. The subway operates 24/7. If you’ve decided to stick to landmarks in a particular neighborhood, you’ll be able to get around on foot. If you’re tired, you can hail one of the city’s famous yellow cabs. Rideshares also operate here. 

What are the local currency & tipping customs?

The U.S. Dollar (USD) is the official currency of NYC, and you’ll find ATMs are widespread. Most major credit cards are accepted as well, but it’s helpful to carry cash with you when you shop at bodegas. Many bars have a minimum purchase amount for credit or debit card use.

Manhattan New York Cruise Terminal Information

Situated on the west side of Manhattan, the cruise terminal offers breathtaking views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Explore the vibrant neighborhoods, world-class museums, and renowned landmarks of Manhattan before embarking on your cruise adventure.

The Manhattan cruise terminal is one of two cruise terminals that make up the Port of New York.

The Manhattan terminal (Piers 88 and 90) is one of the busiest in North America and has recently undergone $200 million dollars in state-of-the -art renovations. It is in the process of upgrading to be able to accommodate the world’s largest ships .

The Manhattan terminal is located at 711 12th Avenue. If driving, note that all cars enter the terminal from the north at the intersection of 55th St. and State Route 9A (12th Ave) . You will see directional signs directing toward the “Ship Terminal.” Also, there is no ability to drop off luggage prior to parking. See here for detailed parking information.

When arriving, you will be at street level, and need to take an elevator or escalator to reach Customs and check-in.  Signs will be posted on pillars identifying which ship is docked at which berth.

New York Weather

In New York, temperatures hit their peak in July and August, with humidity reaching up to 90 percent. There aren’t usually any snowstorms to worry about until December due to the city’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Mild and pleasant summers are typical for the rest of the state. Keep in mind that winters can be very cold especially upstate, and there may be heavy snow and ice until well into May.

Most ships dock in Manhattan on the West Side; the passenger ship terminals are located off the West Side Highway (12th Avenue) and span several blocks of the West 50s. It is about a 15 minute walk from Midtown. This is by far the best location for cruise passengers.

Some dock at he passenger ship terminal located in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood with nice views of the NY skyline. Taxis are your best choice here as there is little within walking distance. The terminal has very few facilities. For public transport use the MTA website. At night a taxi is recommended.

You'll see Bowling Green Park, where Peter Minuit traded $24 worth of goods for Manhattan Island, and you can rub the nose of the "Charging Bull" for good luck, just like Wall Street investors do. (It's a 7000-pound bronze sculpture that mysteriously appeared in Bowling Green Park in 1989!) Time permitting, you might even grab a burger at the only McDonald's in the world with a ticker tape from the New York Stock Exchange flashing across the main dining hall!

American Museum of Natural History

Gazing at the 36 million astounding specimens displayed here – from the mammoth and great dinosaurs of prehistoric times to a fragment of the oldest rock in the universe. The diversity of the exhibits is mind-boggling! If this isn't enough, there's also an IMAX Theater, other special exhibitions and programs, and - opening in April, 2000 – the Rose Center for Earth and Space with a new state-of-the-art Hayden Planetarium, the most technologically advanced Space Theater in the world. This museum is a must-see for everyone who visits New York!

The United Nations

Although you won't feel as if you've left New York when we enter the grounds of the United Nations, officially we will have entered an international zone where the land does not belong to the United States, but to all the countries that have joined the United Nations. It has its own police and fire forces, post office, and six official languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. So regardless of who you are or where you live, this is your organization, and its goal is to promote peace, preserve the environment, and create a better way of life for all mankind.

The Skyline

One of the most memorable attractions of New York City is the city itself! To get some perspective on the magnitude of this city, you have to see it from a distance. There are several great ways to do this. On a harbor cruise, using a Circle Line Boat or the Staten Island Ferry you can view this vast skyline from the water. For a "bird's eye view," nothing beats the panorama from the top or the Empire State Building. From the water or the air, you'll be amazed at just how big the "The Big Apple" really is.

Times Square, Broadway and The Theatre District

Until you've seen Times Square at night, you haven't really seen New York. Dazzling lights illuminate the area; pedestrians from every corner of the world converge; a cacophony of sounds from street musicians to taxi horns fills the air; dozens of theaters each present world-class performances; restaurants and shops beckon you to come and take a look. This general hub-bub of activity makes Times Square a place like no other. As the song suggests, "There's no business like show business," and there's no better place to experience it than Times Square.

Central Park

Central Park is an 843-acre green oasis in the heart of New York. Here you'll stroll along some of the 58 miles of tree-lined paths, or people-watch from the shady park benches. You're likely to see mothers with strollers, dog walkers, joggers and in-line skaters, impromptu concerts, and more. At the south end of the park there is a wonderful little zoo, Central Park Wildlife Center, and Wollman Skating Rink. Strawberry Fields (a tribute to John Lennon) and Sheep Meadow are on the west side of the park and are designated places for quiet meditation. New Yorkers and visitors alike enjoy this park as a welcome respite from the bustling city streets.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty, unveiled on October 28, 1886, was given to the United States from France as a gesture of friendship between the two countries, but it quickly became more than just a gift. With her torch raised 151 feet above New York Harbor, this phenomenal monument became a symbol of hope and freedom to the world. Even today the Statue of Liberty is an inspirational sight -- it is easy to imagine what those immigrants must have felt as they entered the harbor. After long, difficult voyages, Lady Liberty was there, welcoming them to America and beckoning them to their new home. Ellis Island was the gateway to this new home. With over 12 million immigrants passing through here between 1892 and 1954, more than 4 out of 10 Americans can trace their ancestry to this port of entry.

The Museums of New York

New York is a city of top-notch museums, but two that are absolutely overwhelming are the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest museums in the world and displays masterpieces from nearly all the world's cultures. With 5 million visitors a year, it attracts more people than any other site in New York City. MoMA (as the Museum of Modern Art is known) has the world's greatest collection of modern art, from Van Gogh to Monet to Picasso and more.

This ancient city port has three harbours, making it the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Piraeus has religious and historic landmarks of its own, but Athens is only eight miles (13km) to the northeast and is easily accessible via a 30-minute metro ride or a 20- to 30-minute taxi ride. Port of Cape Town, South Africa

The cruise terminal at the port of Cape Town is operated by the V&A Waterfront, a 304-acre neighbourhood with shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment options. On the approach to the port, passengers can view the scenic bay and harbour and the mountains beyond. Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain to get a beautiful vista of the city that's within walking distance of the port. Geirangerfjord Port, Norway

Port of Skala, Santorini, Greece

The journey to the Greek island of Santorini offers some of the most beautiful views from the Mediterranean Sea. Santorini's capital, Fira, can be reached from the port by tender dock and then by cable car, or by walking up 580 or so steps. Port of Jeju, South Korea

Cruise passengers arriving at the port on the UNESCO-listed Jeju Island in South Korea have the opportunity to explore secluded beaches, underground lava tunnels, caves and waterfalls. Jeju city is one mile (2km) from the port. The island was once a honeymoon destination for South Korean couples and is also home to an adults-only theme park called Love Land, which features more than a hundred erotic sculptures. Dubrovnik Cruise Port, Croatia

Dubrovnik's main cruise port is located around two miles (3km) away from the Old Town. Most of the cruise ships dock here although some moor in front of the old port, where visitors can then take a tender boat to shore. Princess, Virgin Voyages, Cunard, P&O, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Carnival, Windstar and Oceania all include ports of call at the destination.

PortMiami, Florida, USA

The port of Miami is often referred to as the cruise capital of the world, welcoming more cruise passengers to its terminals than any other port. Miami's geographic position makes it easily accessible to the Caribbean and Latin America on cruise itineraries. MSC Cruises recently began work on its new £265 million ($350m) terminal at the port, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2023. It will have three berths for mega cruise ships, making it North America’s largest cruise terminal. Virgin Voyages opened a dedicated cruise terminal there earlier this year. The three-storey Terminal V hosts the line’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, and will be joined by Valiant Lady later this year. 

Port St. Maarten, Caribbean

Passengers are immediately welcomed to Harbour Point Village when they arrive ashore on the small island of St. Maarten, affectionately known as "the Friendly Island". The island’s colourful capital, Philipsburg, can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. This town has plenty of Dutch charm, great shopping in the form of duty-free outlets, souvenir shops and market stalls, as well as bars and restaurants. There are plenty of watersports available too. This beautiful island is visited by Carnival, Costa, Disney Cruise Line, Princess,  P&O, NCL and HAL, to name a few.

Port of Barcelona, Spain

The Port of Barcelona is a launching-off point for many Mediterranean cruises and has one of the highest concentrations of cruise passengers in Europe. Within it is the old harbour, Port Vell, and at the foot of the port is the city’s famous boulevard, La Rambla, which stretches through the heart of the city centre. The thoroughfare can be reached on foot or by a cruise shuttle bus from the cruise terminals. The port is a draw for major cruise lines including Viking, Celebrity, Princess, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Marella and Virgin Voyages.

Havana Port, Cuba

Havana Harbour and the cruise terminal at Havana port are located on the eastern edge of this Cuban city, while Old Havana is almost on the doorstep of the cruise terminal. From there, passengers can walk to Plaza San Francisco, one of Old Havana's four main squares, while further south is seaside boulevard the Malecón. The city's central park is also accessible on foot, although a journey in a vintage taxi is a must. If your cruise is coming from Tampa, Key West, Miami or Cozumel, Havana is likely to be on your route, with cruise lines including Viking, Marella, Variety and Royal Caribbean all paying a visit. 

Port of Livorno, Italy

The Port of Livorno is considered a major Italian port and is located on the western coast of the beautiful region of Tuscany. The destination is a popular cruise centre, thanks to its close proximity to Pisa and Florence. Both cities are easy to reach by train after a shuttle bus transfer from the cruise terminal. It's then a 15-minute train journey from Livorno to Pisa, or just over an hour to Florence. The port destination is used by cruise lines including P&O, Marella, Royal Caribbean, HAL, Fred. Olsen, Carnival, MSC, Cunard and Regent Seven Seas.

Port of Stockholm, Sweden

The port of Stockholm is one of the busiest in Europe and shortly after arriving ashore, passengers can visit the stunning city from one of two major cruise terminals: Stadsgarden and Frihamnen. The Millesgården is an art museum and sculpture garden located on the island of Lidingö in front of Frihamnen port. More of the city’s famous museums – such as ABBA The Museum, the Viking Museum and the maritime-focused Vasa Museum – are conveniently located on the city's island oasis of Djurgården. NCL, Royal Caribbean, Viking, Regent and Ponant all include itineraries to Stockholm.

Port of Key West, Florida, USA

At the port of Key West in Florida, the main attractions are all in close proximity as the island city is only four miles long by two miles wide. The old town has historic buildings, art galleries, tropical gardens, shops, vintage saloons, restaurants and bars. Also situated there are The Hemingway Home and Museum and the famous Sloppy Joe's bar, which has been in Key West since 1933. Thanks to its year-round tropical climate, cruise passengers can snorkel or dive in the coral reefs and wrecks surrounding the port. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Princess, Celebrity, P&O and Virgin Voyages regularly call here.

Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico

With its central Caribbean location, San Juan cruise port in Puerto Rico is a modern world cruise capital. San Juan offers old world charm and natural wonders. Old San Juan is a historic landmark, with 16th- and 17th-century Spanish-style buildings and the fortresses of San Cristobal and El Morro. There are also many shops, lively cafés and restaurants to visit. Natural beauty lies in San Juan's beaches and verdant El Yunque National Forest. Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, P&O, Celebrity, Silversea and Disney Cruise Line all head here.

Port of Sydney, Australia

With iconic sights such as the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, Sydney is one of the world’s great port cities. Cruise ships glide past these iconic structures and through the dramatic sandstone passage cliffs of The Heads that lead to and from the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is the only Australian city to have two dedicated cruise terminals and thanks to its size, visitors will be able to see plenty there in a day or two. Cruise lines docking here include NCL, Cunard, Princess, Celebrity, HAL, Royal Caribbean, Silversea, Oceania and Virgin Voyages.

Port of Venice, Italy

Venice is one of the most stunning cities to cruise into, passing sites such as St Mark’s Square as the ship leaves the Adriatic Sea to enter a narrow entrance called the Porto di Lido, on the way to the piers at the Venetian Lagoon and the Venice Cruise Terminal. However, since 2021 ,  medium and large cruise ships have been banned from Venice's historic centre until further notice, due to environmental concerns. Instead, they currently moor at Marghera, a district of Venice on the Italian mainland. P&O, NCL, Royal Caribbean, Marella, Princess, Azamara, MSC, HAL, Oceania and many others call at the destination.

Port of Kotor, Montenegro

Cruise passengers are in for something special as they enter the port at the Bay of Kotor. The ship wends its way through a 17-mile (27km) waterway offering fjord-like views of mountains and leading to the old walled city of Kotor. The old city dates back to the Middle Ages and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with attractive buildings, churches, squares and stone streets. It is a short walk from the cruise port and has small shops and restaurants to stop off at. The destination is reached by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL).

The  20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise  last week after an argument with his dad has been identified as a former high school football player and avid hunter living in Florida.

Levion Parker, of North Port, Florida, has been missing since he jumped overboard April 4 in front of his brother and father on the cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The release of his identity comes shortly after the  Coast Guard called off its search  for Parker. 

Social media posts show Parker often went on hunting and fishing trips. He also played football for North Port High School before he graduated in 2022, according to the Daily Mail .

Parker jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas after reportedly getting into an argument with his father.

Parker’s father was “fussing at him for being drunk,”  fellow passenger Bryan Sims told The Post .

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said.

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims added.

Sims hung out with Parker and his brother, Seth, 18, in the hot tub in the early hours of April before going their separate ways around 4 a.m. 

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he headed toward the elevators.

On his way there, he noticed the two brothers and their dad, Francel Parker, coming out of the sliding doors near the elevators. 

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.  

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for him with help from the US Coast Guard.

Parker’s father owns an air conditioning company and the family was cruising on the boat as guests of Tropic Supply, a Florida-based air conditioning wholesale company.

Tropic Supply had invited dozens of contractors to mark the company’s 50th anniversary, according to Daily Mail.

The Post has reached out to the family for comment.

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.
