Original Groundbreakers Co-Op, Inc. - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)
I visit Universal Orlando several times a year. Here are my top 10 tips for first-timers.
I’ll never forget walking out of Universal Islands of Adventure in 2022, drenched from head to toe after riding Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barge .
It was my first trip back to Universal Orlando Resort in years, and I learned some things the hard way, which I gladly shared with fellow travelers, hoping that they’d avoid my mistakes .
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to visit the Florida resort several times a year. And while I stand by my earlier tips, I’ve learned a few others.
Here are my top tips for first-timers visiting Universal Orlando.
1. Stay on property
From RV parks to vacation rentals, there’s no shortage of places to stay in Central Florida, but it can pay to stay on property when visiting Universal Orlando. Not only are prices comparable to off-property hotels with Endless Summer Surfside and Dockside starting at $99 a night, but all of Universal’s resort hotels offer 30 minutes of early entry to select parks, which vary depending on time of year.
They also provide free resort transportation, so you can get back to your room fairly quickly after a long park day or for a midday break. That free transportation can be clutch in the mornings, particularly at pricier Loews Sapphire Falls , Loews Royal Pacific , Loews Portofino Bay , and Hard Rock Hotel , which offer water taxis that drop you off closer to the parks than you can get arriving by car or bus. Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Aventura Hotel guests can walk over to Sapphire Falls for water taxis, but the extra time and steps added may make it not worth skipping the resort shuttle bus.
Walking paths are also available to the parks from every resort hotel except the Endless Summer ones. Cabana Bay guests also have a dedicated walking path to Universal’s Volcano Bay water park.
Guests staying at Royal Pacific, Portofino Bay and Hard Rock also get free Universal Express Passes , which dramatically cut waits for most rides and normally start at $79.99 per person. Free package delivery is also available to all resort hotels, if guests don’t want to lug park purchases around all day.
Epic Universe details revealed: What's coming to Universal Orlando next year
2. Buy a popcorn bucket
Snacking at the parks can get expensive. Guests are welcome to bring their own snacks, but there’s one crowd-pleaser that won’t break the bank.
A plain popcorn bucket costs a little over $12, and you can keep getting refills throughout your trip. Refills cost around $2 each, making popcorn among the cheapest, most shareable snacks on property. On our last trip, my family and I got multiple refills for the price of one pretzel with cheese dip.
3. Bring a light, refillable water bottle
Staying hydrated is always important, particularly on hot park days.
You can fill water bottles with free ice-cold water at any of the many Coca-Cola Freestyle machines across the property. Cups of ice water are also available for free anywhere dispensed soft drinks are sold.
Leave big double-walled stainless steel tumblers at home. Not only will they feel heavy, carrying them around all the day, but if they aren’t leak-proof, they’ll make a mess when you tip them on their sides to fit in lockers for thrill rides.
4. Bring a medium-sized bag to carry your stuff
Numerous attractions, from Jurassic World VelociCoaster to Men in Black Alien Attack , require guests to store loose articles in lockers provided for the duration of the ride.
I previously recommended keeping most of your things together to avoid having to empty every pocket each time. That’s still true, but I want to add a caveat on size.
The free lockers aren’t very big. They can fit a Loungefly-style mini backpack or empty popcorn bucket, if you squish them down, but they’re not large enough for packed full-size backpacks. Keep that in mind unless you want to pay for larger lockers.
5. Bring ponchos
Ponchos don’t take a lot of space and can save you from getting soaked like me on Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barge, Dudley Do-Right’s Rip Saw Falls , and Jurassic Park River Adventure .
Even if you skip water rides, ponchos are good to keep on hand for rainy park days.
6. Use single-rider lines
Many attractions have a single-rider lane. If you’re traveling alone or don’t mind your party being split up, you can save time using the single-rider lane, if it’s open. They’re not always offered.
It doesn’t guarantee a short wait, but it’s usually shorter. On our latest trip, my middle schooler still waited at least 45 minutes for The Incredible Hulk Coaster and an hour for Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit . That was about as long as the regular standby wait for Hulk but shorter than the standby wait for Rip Ride Rockit.
The following attractions have single-rider lanes, though availability varies.
Universal Studios Florida
- E.T. Adventure.
- Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.
- Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.
- Men in Black Alien Attack.
- Revenge of the Mummy.
- The Simpsons Ride.
- Transformers: The Ride-3D.
Universal Islands of Adventure
- Doctor Doom's Fearfall.
- Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls.
- Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.
- Jurassic Park River Adventure.
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster.
- The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man.
- The Incredible Hulk Coaster.
7. Use child swap
If someone in your party doesn’t meet ride requirements for an attraction or simply wants to sit it out, you can ask for a child swap. It’s particularly helpful for families with young children because it allows parents and caregivers to take turns riding the ride and staying with whoever is sitting it out.
On our most recent trip, my youngest didn’t want to ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure , so we all waited in line together, but then she and I peeled off to a designated waiting room while my middle schooler and mother-in-law went on the ride. When they were done, my mother-in-law stayed with my youngest while I went on the ride. My middle schooler lucked out, getting to ride it twice.
Not all attractions have waiting rooms, but they all offer swaps. Just let team members know you need one.
8. Take breaks
Theme parks can be exhausting. Not only are you on your feet all day, but they can be loud, crowded and overstimulating.
When possible, I like to plan for at least one sit-down meal in the day. This way, I can take my time and recuperate in air conditioning away from crowds. I’ll typically splurge on one table-service meal, but there are several medium-priced, quick-service restaurants across both theme parks where you can grab a lighter snack and relax.
Really, any cool spot where you can sit down works. Knockturn Alley in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida is always refreshing, though dark. Jurassic Park Discovery Center in Islands of Adventure is a great place for kids to explore while adults unwind.
9. Watch the shows
Rides get a lot of the love, but Universal Orlando’s live entertainment is top tier. You can find showtimes on the free resort app or simply stop to watch performances you stumble across while roaming the parks.
The only year-round shows with dedicated seating are at Universal Studios Florida: Animal Actors On Location! , The Bourne Stuntacular , and Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show, which is more funny than scary.
10. Let little ones stretch their legs
There are several play areas across both theme parks for little ones to burn off energy.
This summer, a new DreamWorks Land will open at Universal Studios Florida with a “Kung Fu Panda”-themed play area.
At Islands of Adventure, kids can explore Camp Jurassic in Jurassic Park, If I Ran a Zoo in Seuss Landing, and Me Ship, The Olive in Toon Lagoon. There are also splash pads and water features across Toon Lagoon; just make sure to either bring swimsuits or backup clothes for those.
Bonus: Don’t sleep on Volcano Bay
You’ll definitely want to pack swimsuits if you’re heading to Volcano Bay, which regularly ranks among the best water parks in the country and adds a completely different experience to vacations.
It’s themed like a tropical paradise, with plenty of trees and an iconic volcano that houses multiple water slides. The water park can get crowded, but you never spend too much time standing in line because every guest gets a Tapu Tapu wearable bracelet that lets them join one virtual queue at a time.
Single-day tickets start at $80, which is considerably less than the $119 starting price for guests age 10 and up at Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, but still not cheap. However, if you’re already planning to buy multiday tickets for both theme parks, tacking on Volcano Bay is not much more.

The 1990s ushered in an era during which The North Face launched Tekware, an innovative collection designed to provide rock climbers, backpackers, hikers, trail runners, and outdoor enthusiasts with the ultimate fit and function.
Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia's founder, got his start as a climber in 1953 at the ripe old age of 14. Soon after he began to create his own climbing gear for himself and friends. This gradually evolved to a full fledged business known for both ingenuity and environmental awareness.
Eventually, the Patagonia innovative mindset lead to the creation of Capilene base layer and Synchilla outer layers. When combined, these two technologies created a warmth masterpiece. Regulator insulation is Patagonia's newest innovation and represents a significant technical improvement over Synchilla. 4 Rivers fly the coop as company announce popular Winter Park restaurant The Coop is set to close
The popular Winter Park restaurant The Coop is being closed forever by local family owned business 4 Rivers after nearly 10 years in operation.
Sad news as 4 Rivers Smokehouse' founder John Rivers, has revealed that the popular Winter Park restaurant The Coop will turn off the lights for the last time this weekend, with the restaurant closing permanently on Sunday, July 16.
John Rivers has release a statement Monday, which is now on the restaurants website , informing customers of 4 Rivers decision to close The Coop.
"It’s with a grateful heart for the opportunity to have served so many wonderful families at the Coop these last 9 & 1/2 years to share that our time at our Winter Park home is coming to an end on Sunday, July 16th."
Rivers went on to explain that the lease on the restaurant is coming to an end, and that due to current market rates the business cannot justify renewing the lease.
It is only the Winter Park location that is affected with Rivers explaining, "It’s been an honor to have shared a glimpse of the food and warm home environment that I grew up in. The Coop brand will continue in the many venues it’s currently served throughout Orlando; who knows, perhaps God will lead us to other restaurant locations in the future."
You can of course still enjoy the delicious home-style fare of the South at The Coop within Exploria Stadium, but as for the restaurant, for now you only have until Sunday to say your goodbyes.

The COOP Winter Park – A Southern Affair in Orlando
The coop winter park brings small town southern charm to the city.
A few block from the bustling Park Avenue area of Winter Park, Florida , lies a bright red corner building that your eyes can’t help but be drawn to. Inside The COOP Winter Park, you will be transported from the greater Orlando area and into a cozy, homestyle Mississippi kitchen – which is, of course, the point.
The COOP offers casual, cafeteria style eating, though the food is anything but.
The brainchild of John Rivers, of 4Rivers fame , this somewhat recent gem has gained quick popularity. The COOP: A Southern Affair encompasses down-home southern cooking. Rivers soon brought aboard Chef Whitney Miller, season 1 champion of the popular competitive cooking show MasterChef , to help develop the menu and serve up some Southern greatness.
I was lucky enough to enjoy a tasting menu on my visit – some of Miller’s favorites. A few starters came first: one that stands out were the deviled eggs – firm & tasty . The sweet potatoes with pepper jelly were a delicious, sweet & spicy spin on an old classic .
Clockwise from top left: Pimento Cheese and Baguette Chips, Sweet Potatoes with pepper jelly, Cinnamon Bun Bread Pudding, Deviled Eggs
As a going-on-7-year Floridian, I am somewhat ashamed to say I’ve never tried chicken and waffles (pictured above) – until now. With a maple bourbon glaze , it was love at first bite. And the shrimp and grits ? Better than those I’ve had in the low country itself.
Too hungover or lazy to leave your house for waffles? Here is a decent Plan B from Amazon:
Low Country Shrimp and Grits
Miller grew up in Mississippi, and was greatly influenced by her mother and great-grandmother in the kitchen. She began cooking at an early age, and by age 12 she was already pursuing her then-dream of becoming a pastry chef. Says Miller, “I love using my Southern cooking style with Mississippi & Louisiana cuisine influences , my creativity and cooking skills into developing recipes for The COOP’s menu”.
Chef Whitney Miller
The COOP: A Southern Affair is open Monday-Saturday starting at 7AM, serving an extremely popular breakfast.

LeBron James has never been NBA defensive player of the year — and it really bugs him
- Show more sharing options
- Copy Link URL Copied!
LeBron James has scored more points than anyone in NBA history.
The four-time champion and 20-time all-star has been named league MVP and Finals MVP four times each.
He also has finished second in defensive player of the year voting twice.
Apparently that last part really bugs the Lakers superstar.
“I mean, that’s the only award that I don’t have in my house. It kind of stings,” James said in a clip released from the latest episode of “ The Shop: Uninterrupted ,” which will drop Thursday on HBO. “I’ve talked about this before, like, it don’t make sense. It’s almost what [Jay-Z] just said about [Beyoncé] . How could she have the most Grammys , but never won Album of the Year ?”
Lakers know Pelicans present problems in rematch, but so does complacency
While it’s been suggested the Lakers might want to lose Tuesday to avoid a first-round series against Denver, LeBron James and Co. focus on task at hand.
April 15, 2024
James won his first league MVP award as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. He finished second to Orlando’s Dwight Howard for defensive player of the year and the voting wasn’t close. Howard received 105 first-place votes and 542 total points from the 119 sports writers and broadcasters who cast ballots; James got four first-place votes and 148 points.
The one that really seems to stick in James’ craw came in 2013, the same year he won his final league MVP award, this time as a member of the Miami Heat. Marc Gasol , then of the Memphis Grizzlies, won the defensive player of the year award, with 30 first-place votes and 212 points; James finished second, with 18 first-place votes and 149 points.
While that still seems like a somewhat sizable margin between first and second place, something doesn’t sit right about it for James.
“The guy who won defensive player of the year didn’t even make first-team all-defense,” James said on the clip released Tuesday. “How is that even possible?”
Caitlin Clark is worth millions. Why will she only make $76,535 in base salary as a WNBA rookie?
Caitlin Clark is a household name and generational talent. She makes millions in endorsements but will make a base salary of less than $77,000 as a WNBA rookie.
April 17, 2024
James is correct. He made first-team all defense that year, while Gasol only made the second team.
It was possible because, at the time, the all-defensive teams were determined by coaches’ votes, an entirely different group of people that cast ballots for defensive player of the year.
It actually wasn’t the first time that happened. Alvin Robertson (1986), Dikembe Mutombo (1995) and Tyson Chandler (2012) all were second-team all-defensive players the same year they were named defensive player of the year. Gasol was the last player to fall into that category, as the all-defensive team has been determined by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters starting in 2014.

Available Tractor Types
On the COOP platform, common variations of Tractors listed for rent in Orlando, FL include:
Single Axle Day Cabs
Single axle day cabs have one axle on each side which translates to the number of wheels they have. The number of axles helps determine how much cargo they can carry. So, single axle day cabs have a lower cargo weight limit as to when compared with double axle day cabs.
Sleeper Cabs
Sleeper cabs are the most ideal for hauling goods over long distances, especially if the trip takes days or weeks. They offer a sleeping area which is an extension of the cabin area, for the driver to rest during their trips. Additionally, drivers get to choose whether they want a luxurious sleeper cab or the standard-designed ones, it all depends on how often they make trips and their preference.
Double Axle Day Cabs
Double axle day cabs, which can also be referred to tandem axle day cabs have two sets of axles on each side. This gives them advantages when compared to single axle tractors because it gives them better suspension. As a result, double axle day cabs are used to haul heavier loads without risking the safety of the driver or loads due to instability.
Conventional Day Cabs
Just as the name suggests, conventional day cabs are mostly used during the day, meaning that they don’t offer sleeping and resting provision for the driver. So, since they don’t have a sleeper area, they are best for shorter hauls when compared to sleeper cabs.

While it operates as a subsidiary of the Daimler group, Freightliner has managed to remain on top of its game. It is known for the manufacture of different tractors with some of the most unique features there are. Renter Testimonial
Don't just take our word, hear what COOP customers have to say about our platform.
“The supply of short-term rental trucks was almost impossible. COOP was able to help by connecting us to equipment Owners that weren’t utilizing their fleets.”
“I like the convenience of being able to pick up the vehicles when I need them, check them out on the app, take pictures, and get on the road.”
Tractor Uses
For-hire transportation companies are tasked with efficiently moving goods and cargo from point A to point B. Achieving this requires having a reliable and diverse vehicle fleet to choose from. Renting commercial trailers and trucks can be a game-changing option for your transportation company to expand and enhance your fleet without the financial commitment of purchasing inventory. Renting allows for the flexibility of adjusting the fleet size to match the demand for services. With a rental option, your transportation company can maintain control of operating costs while meeting the evolving needs of clients.
As a food service distributor and restaurant supply, delivering your products on time and in good condition is your business's success metric. To ensure your deliveries are efficient and reliable, renting a commercial vehicle gives you an edge. Commercial trucks and trailers allow you to transport more products at once, making deliveries more cost-effective. With seasonal fluctuations in the market, you can always have the right sized vehicle with the appropriate storage and temperature control needed to deliver perishable goods.
In the Hospitality and Tourism Industry, renting commercial trucks and trailers is the fastest way to keep customers happy. This approach is ideal for transporting supplies, furniture, and equipment to and from various hospitality venues. It offers the flexibility to adjust to seasonal demands or special events, ensuring that hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality businesses keep their overhead low.
Construction jobs and companies come in all sizes and need lumber or metal framing on job sites. Projects range from small to medium residential contracts and large industrial and commercial projects. These construction jobs require different types of equipment and machinery, from large to small. Renting commercial trailers and trucks through the COOP platform let you choose the right size vehicle for the right job.

Subscriber only, travel | cruise demand leaves pandemic in rearview with record passengers, more construction on tap.
MIAMI BEACH — The COVID pandemic drove the cruise industry to a standstill, but numbers released Tuesday signal the years of comeback are officially over with more expansion on tap.
More than 31.7 million passengers took cruises worldwide in 2023, said Kelly Craighead, Cruise Line International Association president and CEO, speaking at the annual Seatrade Cruise Global conference at Miami Beach Convention Center.
CLIA is the lobbying group for member cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC and most other major brands.
The pandemic shut down sailing from March 2020 with only a small number of ships coming back online 18 months later in summer 2021. Cruise lines didn’t return to full strength until partially through 2022, so it wasn’t until a full year of sailing in 2023 that the industry could get a real handle on just what the demand had grown to as people returned to vacation travel.
“We are an industry that’s resilient and thriving all around the world, breaking records in ways we might never have imagined,” she said.
The 2023 total is 2 million more than the industry had in 2019. CLIA projects 34.1 million in 2024 growing to 34.6 million in 2025. It’s still a miniscule chunk of the overall travel pie of more than 1.3 billion, but cruise’s share is growing.
She noted that surveys of travelers who would consider a cruise for a vacation are at an all-time high, noting that 82% who had previously cruised said they would cruise again, but more importantly, among those who had never sailed, 71% would consider it.
The youngest generations — Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z — are the biggest drivers.
The fleet for the growing demand continues as well, including the introduction this year of the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.
She said CLIA member lines had more than 300 ships sailing globally for the first time in 2023, with 14 new ships that began sailing in 2023 and another eight expected before the end of the year. They have 88 new ships on order through 2028.
Already this year, both Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corp. announced major new ship construction deals, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings added to that this week with its order of eight more vessels across its three brands.
The heads of those groups were on stage to discuss where the industry is headed and enjoy their recent success.
Carnival Corp.’s president and CEO Josh Weinstein put it in a way that gained plaudits from fellow panelists and others at the conference.
“The concept of pent-up demand for cruising is gone,” he said. “We have been cruising for three years, right? It’s over. This is natural demand because we all provide amazing experiences. We delivered happiness to literally 31 million guests last year. And people see it, they feel it.”
A big part of what cruising missed during the pandemic he said was that word-of-mouth promotion that is needed to convince people to try their product.
“We now have 31 million people getting off our ships and going home and telling their friends and family who have never cruised before, ‘You don’t know what you’re missing.’ ‘This is amazing.'”
All of the leaders echoed the industry line that they offer a much better value than land-based vacations, but that the experience gap between the two has now shifted in their favor coming out of the pandemic.
“The appreciation for building memories with your friends and family coming out of COVID is at extraordinarily high levels,” said Jason Liberty, president & CEO at Royal Caribbean Group. “Also wealth transfer, right? Grandparents wanting to see that wealth transfer live, watching their kids and their grandkids experience that is also at an all-time high. … We have the secular trends of people buying less stuff, they want experiences. We’re in the experience business.”
Another bright aspect to the industry has been the spillover effect of all of the new ships since the pandemic, said Harry Sommer, president & CEO at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.
“Their new products are so extraordinary, and so much better than what was delivered back in ’15, ’16 and ’17, that it’s driving additional excitement for the entire industry,” Somer said. “When any new ship is delivered, no matter whether it’s part of our portfolio or the other portfolios, demand improves for all of us because it adds excitement to the industry.”

While Orlando is in the south, it’s not really a Southern city. If you’re looking for some proper Southern food though, you can find it at The Coop in Winter Park. This place specializes in fried chicken, which you should definitely get, but they also serve po’boys, shrimp and grits, and plenty of traditional sides, if a bucket of chicken isn’t what you’re after. They also serve breakfast seven days a week, which includes classics like chicken and waffles and biscuits with gravy. Just make sure to schedule a nap for afterwards if you stop by.
