Bad Customer Service. Headache Tour Company
The company was really rude, and their customer service was terrible. Talking to them was stressful, and they sounded condescending. Even though they only show 5-star reviews on their website, it seems fake or carefully chosen. While their prices might be a bit lower, they add extra fees like fuel surcharge. It's better to save your time and money by booking somewhere else for a better experience.

Fraud/Scam canyontours.com
Don't buy tours at canyontours.com. This is a fraudulent company. They never showed up to pick us up and said we were not in the right location, which was absolutely not true. They deceive people in the modality of non-providing the service ordered online. They also treated us very badly by phone and just ignored us, and did not want to provide a refund. Of course, this is the way they operate to scam people.

TERRIBLE experience!!!
Terrible, terrible, terrible experience with this company! I booked the GC 4 in 1 Voyager tour of the West Rim online several weeks before my family’s trip. 1 day before our scheduled tour, they called me and cancelled. I decided to give them a 2nd chance and rebooked for the next available date (which was our last day in Vegas) instead of going with another company. BIG MISTAKE!!! The day before our rescheduled tour I called and reconfirmed our reservations. The morning of our tour we were waiting outside our hotel waiting to be picked up as instructed but the driver didn’t show up. Thinking they were just running late, I called to make sure and was told our tour was CANCELLED AGAIN!!! I did not receive a call or text informing me of this. I had to call to even find out! Because of that, by the time we found out, it was too late to rebook with another tour company (and it was the last day of our trip).I would NEVER recommend this tour company. They are completely unreliable, unprofessional, and do not care about providing even basic customer service. I would give them ZERO stars if I could!

Our tour guide was amazing but there…
Our tour guide was amazing but there was just way to many rest stop breaks and to much time spent on the bus. The Grand Canyon was amazing but not enough time was spend there a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes the rest of the time was spent on the bus. Definitely not worth the price or the time. I could have done other things the day felt like a waste to us.

In one word bad in two words very bad. If you want to see the Grand Canyon, you will not see it with this company!! They didn’t pick us from the pick up point!! First at reservation they told us they will pick us from the hotel this was my reason to choose them, then they gave another pick up, we came at 06:15 but nobody came!! There were a lot of buses but not them, when I call them at 06:50 they told us that the driver left!! All the guides from other companies ask and search for the people, but they nothing!! Didn’t call or text us just make accuses.Unprofessional!! And after all of this they didn’t want to return our money!!!!

We booked this canyon bus tour from Las…
We booked this canyon bus tour from Las vegas to South rim a month ago and paid $85 per person. On day before travel date we got a call and they said due to technical problem we can't run south rim instead you can take west rim with extra $25 per head. As we already planned this date for canyon tour so we said ok. On next day when we waiting for board west rim bus infront of our hotel we identified they were operating South rim bus , not sure why they lied to us. And then we waiting for west rim bus and it came late and this is not bus that we expected .This is not a bus..not convenient seats..kind of small size van.. This tour started around 8.45AM and they dropped us on white tent around 11.30AM. They gave only 3 hours time to finish eagle and Guano point. Buses are operating from white tent to eagle and Guano point for every 10 mins..but so much crowd in the line and took around 1 hour to board eagle point. They gave ticket with free meal either eagle or Quano point but it was long queue in eagle point and we decided to go quano point and got the food but we don't have enough time to eat as well. We rush to catch the bus from quano point to white tent..reached around 2.30 PM.. This is really not bus tour...this is RUSH tour... The place is worth but not worth with this bus tour.. better plan with rental car and visit these places..relax and enjoy..

Grand Canyon Sunset Tour with Limo pickup
We were on the sunset tour with limo pickup/drop off and Canyon floor landing. Firstly, the Limo which had an arranged/scheduled collection point and time was around 45mins late - which is frustrating given we were told to be at the collection point 10mins before the scheduled pick up time, resulting in us wasting almost an hour of our day waiting for collection. I have to say credit to Alex our Pilot - he was fantastic from start to finish. There are two issues I have with the overall experience; there was no air conditioning in the limo and more importantly there was no air conditioning in the helicopter. Whilst the Company cannot dictate what the outside temperature is, they operate in the desert and should be well equipped to deliver this type of service/comfort. The lack of air conditioning meant the tour was a challenge and did spoil the overall experience due to the inability to deal with the outside temperatures. There was no escaping the heat for the entire journey, so much so it made me feel a little unwell. Whilst I understand Company can only run the available aircraft I am disappointed that we were not prior warned about the poor air conditioning. We only arrived in Vegas the night before so had not acclimatised and given the extreme heat, neither vehicle was suitable to keep us comfortable. Learning that the other two aircraft had appropriate air conditioning only added to our discomfort, I thought back to my original booking and I am convinced the package we chose was to fly on the 'upgraded EC-130'! We paid a good $1000 for this and we expected a service which would match this spend. The excellent image and experience the pilot gave us has saved the Company from a total disaster but I still consider this well below acceptable. After the trip I sent two emails to two of the Company's email addresses, neither emails were responded to - extremely poor after service. We would not go with this Company again, having done this before with Maverick I would recommend you go with them.

A Moving Sweat Box
When I went to the grand canyon for my fiancee's birthday, we were both very excited because this is something she's wanted to do for a long time. We got the package that includes the skywalk and lunch for $154 with Canyon Tours. The day was going to be 100° day in Las Vegas, and my pick-up location was at the MGM Grand. As we headed to the grand canyon, the weather was a steamy 90° heading towards an 80° day at the grand canyon. The Bus ride was an extremely uncomfortable one. It was a 30-passenger bus, and the headrest on the seats were angeled in a way that you'd have to be intentional to lean your head all the way back just rest your head. Still, it's so uncomfortable it ended up causing more harm than help to trying to get comfortable for the two-and-a-half-hour ride. If not being able to get comfortable wasn't enough, the AC wasn't working correctly. Heading to the grand canyon wasn't as bad as the way back because it wasn't as hot since it was only 90° transitioning to 80°. My back and chest were only slightly perspiring, and I'm usually a little warmer than most people, so I didn't complain, thinking it was just me. Once we got to the grand canyon, it was really fun. Seeing this landmark was everything we hoped for. I don't feel paying for the food was necessary because what Canyon Tours charges you to add the lunch is the same price they'd charge you at the location. If you plan on doing the skywalk, be prepared to spend $65 on the pictures. It's not mandatory, but you might as well pay it since you can't bring cameras, phones, or any personal items on the skywalk. If you just saw one picture you liked, it's $25 per picture... This is why it's best to pay the $65 and chalk it up to support our Native American brethren. They will give you three options to eat, and when we went, only two were available. The driver told us it was authentic Native American food and that Guano Point was the best option out of all 3. When we arrived at Guano point, the options were: Grilled chicken. Pulled Pork BBQ. A regular hamburger with Mashed potatoes and gravy. Corn on the cob. A roll. We were a bit disappointed, considering we got excited about trying a different culture's food, but it wasn't bad, so there is not much to complain about here. Once we checked out all three locations the west rim had to offer, we had time to spare, so we just rode around on the shuttle bus because it was hot and there was not much to do with an hour to spare during the 4-hour tour of the grand canyon. Grand Canyon tours boast that they have a 4-hour tour vs. other companies three hour tour, and my honest opinion is that 4 hours is hugely unnecessary. Now it's time to go, and we are going to stop by the Hoover Dam. As we head that way, several of us are starting to get cranky because the AC isn't working, and it is more than noticeable. We notify the driver, and she makes excuses as if we are not supposed to complain and just deal with it. She told us the bus is used every day and it just happens sometimes. My rebuttal was that I paid to be comfortable too, and from my ride to the grand canyon, and if I expected to be comfortable, I could have rented a car in Las Vegas to make the trip a lot cheaper than what I spent. Since I wasn't happy with the defensive exchange with the driver, who just ignored me and started talking to someone else, I immediately sent a message to canyon tours, who didn't respond to me even after a week had passed. This lets me know they really don't care about the customers, which prompted me to write this very detailed review of this company that I would advise you all to avoid.

1. grand canyon south rim w/ snacks & lunch from vegas.
- Duration: 15 – 16 hours
- Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
- Departure Time: 6:00 AM
- Includes: Grand Canyon National Park Admission, lunch, snacks, water, guided walking tour at Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon National Park With Lunch from Las Vegas is one of the most popular tours of its kind. This 13-hour, full-day tour takes you to the South Rim of the canyon, Mather Point, Bright Angel Point, and over the Colorado River.
With entertaining, friendly staff and a comfy vehicle to take you around, it’s an amazing experience each time. This tour also includes snacks and water, which is great to have inside the air-conditioned vehicle along the way.
This tour involved larger groups than the others we experienced, though was still a great time! Plus, if you have a larger group that other tours can’t accommodate, it’s an excellent alternative.
Head through the beautiful, serene Mojave Desert. We were impressed at how much the scenery changes, as most people seem to have a certain image of how a desert is supposed to look.
One of the highlights is definitely crossing over the Colorado River from high up, on Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.
Once you arrive to the Grand Canyon National Park, you’ll head to the South Rim and Mather Point. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the Visitor Center and other attractions within the park.
Bright Angel Point allows you to walk along the rim at Bright Angel Lodge and the surrounding area, for simply unmatchable views of the canyon!
Throughout the entire time, you can expect interesting commentary by your guides and we appreciated the free time at each spot to see exactly what we wanted to.

- Duration: 14 hours
- Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off available
- Includes: Snacks, lunch, soda, bottled water, fruits, air-conditioned transport
Let’s start things off on the right foot with the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Route 66 Tour from Las Vegas Tour . Lasting 14 hours, this comprehensive tour is a great way to enjoy some breathtaking views, get in some exercise, and simply see some of the most stunning sights in North America.
With small groups only, we found it to be a very personalized experience no matter the time of year.
The tour starts off by getting picked up at your hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. We really appreciated how accommodating everyone was, offering bottled water, soda, and fruit along the way.
For whatever reason, this seemed to make the journey go by much faster! Not to mention the incredible desert scenery outside the window the entire time!
Once you arrive at the Grand Canyon South Rim, the guide will take you and the rest of your group to a trio of different view points so you can see this legendary landmark in all its glory. There is plenty of time to take it all in, take photos, etc. in the 45 minutes in this portion.
Next up, you’ll head over to another part of the Canyon, where you will actually hike inside of it! The hike and exploration part of the tour will last around 2 hours. This is a completely different aspect of the Grand Canyon, and also lets you break a bit of a sweat!
You’ll then head to Route 66, often referred to as the “Mother Road”. Why? Because it connects both coasts of the United States! This is yet another important landmark in US history, and also makes for some great photo ops! The Route 66 Motoporium is fun to check out, with all kinds of throwback photos, famous vintage cars, and more!
On the way back to Vegas, you’ll make a stop at Hoover Dam, walk on top of it, take some photos, and learn about its very important history.
3. Private Grand Canyon South Rim & Sunset Tour From Las Vegas
- Departure Time: June to August: 10:30 , March to May and September to October: 8:15 , November to February: 7:00
- Includes: Private guide / driver, round trip transportation from your hotel, entrance fee for Grand Canyon National Park
The Private Grand Canyon South Rim: Sunset Tour from Las Vegas is very similar to the other tours we’ve just covered. However, there is a notable difference with this one, in that the tour focuses more on experiencing the Grand Canyon during sunset.
The canyon is impressive no matter the hour, but during sunset it is simply unmatchable! After you and your group are picked up at your hotel by a comfy, climate-controlled vehicle, you’ll head out.
Keep in mind that pickup time does vary, depending on the season (refer to the details above). This is to ensure that everyone gets to catch the canyon at golden hour!
The first stop is Kingman, which was actually used in the Disney blockbuster, ‘Cars’! Aside from that, it’s very well-known, with charming art on the walls of buildings, old-school signs, and countless classic cars! Seligman is the ‘Birthplace of Route 66’, and is also home of “Lightning McQueen” from that film!
You’ll then stop at the Grand Canyon, where you’ll initially have 2 hours to explore. The guides will offer interesting commentary about the history of the area, how the canyon came to be, and more.
You’ll also get 1 hour to hike within the Grand Canyon, and walk around with a guide. They’ll show you the best routes, and make sure everyone goes at a comfortable pace.
By this time, you’ll head over to the South Rim, where you’ll get to watch the sunset. The firey red and gold hues look absolutely incredible with the shadows of all the different rock layers!
4. Grand Canyon National Park VIP Tour From Las Vegas
- Departure: Pickup and drop-off available
- Departure Time: 6 am
- Includes: Bottled water, breakfast, lunch, snacks, professional guide
Starting at 6 am, the Grand Canyon National Park VIP Tour from Las Vegas is an educational, full-day excursion that you’re sure to love! You’ll learn all about the area’s geology, history, about the significance of railroads (and driving roads!), Hoover Dam, and much more.
Oh, and we can’t leave out checking out the magnificent Grand Canyon! Lasting 14 hours, you’ll be picked up first-thing in the morning along with the rest of your group to start on your adventure.
The staff really makes everything so streamlined and simple. We found them to be very friendly and entertaining the entire way! Not only that, but breakfast, lunch, snacks, and water is all included so they really do have everything taken care of.
The first stop is at Hoover Dam, which played a crucial part in Las Vegas being what it is today! The guides offer some fun trivia games about how Las Vegas began, its mob origins, and much more! You’ll make a 20-minute stop at the dam to take in the views, snap some pics, and listen to the commentary offered here.
Next up, you’ll travel to the infamous “Eldorado Canyon”. Meaning “the gold canyon” it makes sense that it was at one point the richest gold mining spot on the planet. With red cliffs and green foliage, it is a must-see for any outdoor lover.
A little bit further, you’ll arrive to Route 66 in Kingman. While there are various important spots along the route, you and your group will stop at Santa Fe Railroad Train. Here, you’ll get to see the “Heavy Mountain” enormous steam railway locomotive which was originally built almost 100 years ago!
Now, on to the Grand Canyon! You’ll arrive at Mather Point, which is the first glimpse of the canyon on the South Rim. If you go during the warmer months, you’ll also get to stroll along the trail to Yavapai Point. The Yavapai Observation Station aims to educate visitors on the nature, culture, and history of the area.
Here, you’ll get to see those infamous layers of rock which is basically a geological museum displaying literally millions of years!
Bright Angel Point is another beauty, where the Bright Angel Lodge and Hopi House gift shop sit.

With a small group, this allows for a great amount of flexibility and the chance to have any questions answered by experienced guides who know all about the area. Not only that, but this is a tour where you can really customize your experience.
Start off by being picked up at your Vegas hotel, and settle in to the comfy, air-conditioned minibus. You’ll make stops at the Hoover Dam, and on Route 66 for some photos.
You’ll then head to the Grand Canyon, where the professional guide will tell you and your group all about its history, geology, and even the wildlife that inhabit the canyon and surrounding area. You can even watch an IMAX movie about it, hike inside the canyon, or walk along the rim if you choose!
In the afternoon, the guide will take you to a “secret” location within the park to watch the sunset. Finishing up the day, you’ll head into the little town of Tusayan to have dinner at a local restaurant. You’ll then either head to your 3-star hotel.
The next morning, you’ll enjoy a light breakfast, and head to Horseshoe Bend where you will do a mile hike to the overlook for a spectacular view of the Colorado River.
Now its time to go to Antelope Canyon where a local Navajo will guide you to the slot canyons. We can promise you that you will never forget the views here. Be sure to to have a good camera for the insane photo ops!

- Duration: 7 to 8 hours
- Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Departure Time: 7 am
- Includes: All fees and taxes, driver/guide, air-conditioned vehicle, entry/admission, beverages, snacks
Let’s say you’re on the other end of the spectrum, and are actually looking for a shorter tour to the Grand Canyon. Perhaps you have plans in the late afternoon or night and a full-day tour may simply be too long for your schedule.
If that sounds like you, then check out the Grand Canyon West Small Group Tour from Las Vegas !
Lasting 7 to 8 hours (depending on traffic), it starts off early in the morning, so you’ll be back in time for dinner! Traveler pickup and drop-off is offered, so it’s a very seamless tour.
During the drive there and back, the guides will share all kinds of stories and interesting information about the areas you’re driving by. Once picked up, you and your crew will make a stop at Hoover Dam.
Even seeing it in photos isn’t the same as seeing it in real life! It’s one of the biggest concrete structures on the planet, and you’ll have about 30 minutes here to take photos, walk around, and learn about and see Lake Mead, as well!
Next up is Joshua Tree National Park, which is absolutely stunning. This unique desert landscape seems almost other-worldly. Originally named by Mormon settlers in the mid-1800’s, the tree’s interesting form reminded them of a story in the Bible where Joshua stretches his hands to the sky and prays.
Once at the Grand Canyon, you’ll have plenty of time on your own to check out different views. The guides are very informative, though, and we highly recommend listening to their commentary! We also found them very attentive, and they think of pretty much everything!
7. Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam & 7 Magic Mountains Tour
- Duration: 15 hours
- Departure: Hotel pick-up and drop off
- Includes: National Park fees, breakfast, deli style lunch

The drive is very comfortable, and throughout the time you’re in the vehicle, the guides offer interesting and educational commentary and personal anecdotes.
You’ll make a couple of stops along the journey to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Usually this is Williams or Seligman, which is located along the historical Route 66.
Your first stop is the unique attraction called Seven Magic Mountains. It’s a collection of colorful rock artwork that that offers some great photo opportunities.
Next up, you’ll arrive at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon! Here, you’ll have 3 hours which is plenty of time to walk around, take some photos, and of course learn all about the history and geology of the area!
Not only that, but you may even get to see some local wildlife! The tour guide will brief you on all the highlights so you aren’t missing out on anything.
During this time, you’ll receive your deli-style lunch, which we recommend taking out to one of the 3 lookout points and taking in the magnificent panoramic vistas.

First, keep in mind that the area of the park that’s closest to Sin City is the West Rim. So, Las Vegas tours to the Grand Canyon West Rim are often the cheapest. The views from the West Rim are very nice, but it’s also a super popular spot, so it’s often crowded.

Does the bus just drop you off at the west rim and then you have to do a lot of walking? Same question t for south rim. Or is it get off buss take pics and get back on bus? I ask because I can’t walk much. Please answer
Hi Ruth, The West Rim bus tour drops you off at the Skywalk area, which is where Eagle Point is located. You can do the hike to Guano Point (it’s one of the best views of the Grand Canyon), but it is about an hour-long hike. The South Rim bus tour is similar in that you’ll get dropped off at a viewpoint (Mather Point). However, you’ll have the option to take the bus to Bright Angel or do the hike. Hope this helps!

Grand Canyon and More 3 day tour
The tour and guide were great. I would have liked more time in the Grand Canyon as that experience seemed rushed and I didn’t get to hike as much as I would have liked. However, all the stops and people leading us in the Navajo Nation, Antelope Canyon, etc were wonderful. I would definitely recommend that everyone take part in the Antelope Canyon tour unless you have difficulties maneuvering a ladder. That was a remarkable experience! Being a solo traveler, I did find it a bit awkward that I was touring with a family of four. They were wonderful and kind, but since I had some flexibility of when to travel, I had emailed and asked if there was as a tour that was recommended for solo travelers. Although the response was somewhat vague, I took it to mean a variety of travelers included multiple parties. Five in the tour - as a family of four and me- seemed a bit unusual. I left with an overall good experience and I’m glad a booked. (Hotels were good and offered a hot breakfast.)

Western Deserts – 3 days
The Western Desert 3 day tour was fantastic! I really enjoyed the incredible places we visited especially Antelope Canyon and Bryce Canyon and the main highlight throughout the tour was the incredible tour guide Lorenzo who was very knowledgeable and made everyone feel great with his remarkable people skills which connected with the group and myself, he was the x factor that made a huge difference to the experience. Thank you for this tour and experience.

National Parks Winter Tour
This trip is so beautiful. I went on this winter trip, hoping to see some snow. But, the weather was just too beautiful to have snow. We saw so many things in a short amount of time, but it was enough to get a taste of the area and do some hiking and exploring in each of the places we visited. Joel did an awesome job driving us to everywhere, giving us historical information, and making sure we had what we needed to be comfortable. There were plenty of stops along the drive and plenty of good food options. Their pre-trip communication is great. I am definitely doing more tours with Bindlestiff.

Like many other businesses, they are having some staffing issues. This business was particularly affected by the pandemic as nobody traveled for a year and they had to lay off some people. We had some trouble getting through to them on occasion, but when the time came, they knocked it out of the park. It was a great trip from the beginning to the end. Their Nat Geo tours are a little bit higher end and, in my opinion, worth the money. We had enough time at multiple different locations to go on a very lengthy hikes. That was very nice because sometimes tours over program and you can only get as much accomplished as the slowest person on the tour. The portions of the tour that we did as a group were perfect. Coupled with the adequate time that we had to do our own thing, it made for a wonderful trip. We saw Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Antelope Canyon, the Grand Canyon and did some really cool smaller stops along the way. In each of the parks, we had six or seven hours to accomplish some major hikes. Nice hotels, great recommendations for dinners, wonderful people in our group and our tour guide (Megan) was fantastic. We went out to dinner with the group several nights and it was very pleasant. Some nights we did our own thing. Small groups no larger than 15. We had 13 people total. We brought our 13 and 15-year-old boys and they had a great time as well. I highly recommend.
Sedona, Monument Valley & Antelope Canyon Experience 3D/2N (from Las Vegas)
We had a great time on our tour. It was jammed pack full of fun and information. Our guide Patricia was the best. She knew so much history about the states we travelled to and the parks we visited. I would definitely recommend this tour and Patricia.

After taking a bus tour myself, I created a list of the best West Rim and South Rim tours, starting with my top pick, followed by other favorites listed by price from lowest to highest.

- Grand Canyon bus tours from Las Vegas
West Rim or South Rim?
The West Rim and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon are both reachable on a day trip from Las Vegas. However, there are several important differences you must consider when choosing which one to visit.
Distance from Las Vegas
- West Rim is 130 miles (210 km) away
- South Rim is 280 miles (450 km) away
Bus tour duration
- West Rim bus tours last from 7 to 12 hours
- South Rim bus tours last from 14 to 16 hours
On-site activities
- West Rim has the Skywalk, ziplining and more helicopter tour options
- South Rim has more viewpoints and hiking trails
Jurisdictions
- The Hualapai Tribe operates the West Rim’s attractions and services, which are not part of the Grand Canyon National Park system
- The National Park Service runs all the attractions and services on the South Rim, which is part of the U.S. National Park system
Neither rim will disappoint you. I suggest going to the South Rim if you want the most iconic views of the Grand Canyon and an authentic national park experience.
Visit the West Rim if you’re craving more of an adrenaline rush—whether by traversing the Skywalk, zooming across a ravine on a zipline, or landing on the canyon floor during a helicopter ride.

Travel Tips
- Most bus tours are stroller and wheelchair friendly. However, the South Rim has more paved paths, which makes it more suitable for those with mobility issues.
- Most tours allow children of all ages. However, some tours have age restrictions of up to six years old, so be sure to confirm this before booking.
- Most bus tours have restrooms onboard and/or stop for bathroom breaks every hour.
- Only small backpacks are allowed due to safety concerns and limited storage space.
- Pets are forbidden. Only service animals are allowed on Grand Canyon bus tours.
Visiting the West Rim
No Selfies Allowed on the Skywalk
All personal items must be stored in a locker beforehand, so you won’t be able to sneak your phone out for a selfie. However, after your Skywalk experience, you’ll receive a card with all the photos taken of your group available for purchase, in print or digital.
Buy Attraction Tickets in Advance
Although it’s possible to buy on-site tickets for the Skywalk and other West Rim attractions, most have limited availability and will sell out during the high season. I recommend booking online in advance with the tour provider to avoid the disappointment of sold-out tickets.
Check Zipline Height & Weight Limits
There is no minimum age for the zipline, but you must be at least 4 feet tall (1.22 meters) and weigh from 90 lbs to 265 lbs (40 kg to 120 kg).
Watch What You Wear
The West Rim has a dress code policy to maintain a family-friendly environment. Be aware that shirt and shoes are required at all times. Also, you can’t wear clothes that are too revealing or with offensive language or images.
- West Rim Tours from Las Vegas
Visiting the South Rim
Take Advantage of the Free Shuttle Bus
The South Rim has a free shuttle bus service. I recommend using it if you want to travel more quickly to the next viewpoint. The routes and times change throughout the year, so make sure to check the official National Park Service website for updated information.
Walk the Trail of Time
Between the Yavapai Geology Museum and the Grand Canyon Village, you can walk the paved Trail of Time , on which each meter represents a million years of history.
I found this trail both beautiful and insightful. It was fun to learn about how the Grand Canyon was created over billions of years while stopping at viewpoints to appreciate the result.
Cool Down at the Visitor Center
If you need a break from the heat, you can catch the 20-minute film, Grand Canyon: A Journey of Wonder, which plays every 30 minutes at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center .
Download the Free National Park Service App
The NPS App is a great tool to create your own self-guided tour of the South Rim. I used it while on the bus to the Grand Canyon to start planning the perfect route around the rim.

Walk Through The Antelope Canyon
Antelope is the most snapped slot canyon in the southwest of the United States because of its wave-like structure, which gives the canyon a distinctive appearance. Summer is the most popular season for exploring the canyon since the weather is milder and there is less possibility of rain. Visitors from all over the world come to see its magnificent red and orange sandstone cliffs, which were eroded over many years by wind and water. Because of the canyon's unusual geometry, the sunlight reflects off its walls in fascinating patterns, producing a constantly shifting light display.

Celebrate Art At Seven Magic Mountains
A celebration of art and color , it rises more than 30 feet above the Nevada Desert and is constructed of seven enormous towers built of enormous colorful neon stones. The Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone claims that the Seven Magic Mountains reflect the blending of the man-made and the natural, as well as the passing traffic on the highway and the nearby mountains and lakes. The unique juxtaposition of the brown landscape with the bright and vibrant boulders is very interesting for tourists to observe and marvel over.

Explore Bryce Canyon And Zion National Park
Bryce Canyon, which is celebrating an entire century of wonder, is most renowned for its hoodoos, which are artistically sculpted rock spires that erosion has left intact. The greatest places to see hoodoos are along our day hiking paths, which provide a close-up and personal view of these unusual rock formations. The Bryce Canyon Amphitheater region is where you'll find the majority of the gorgeous day hikes and trailheads. In contrast, the backcountry paths of Bryce Canyon provide woods and meadows, breathtaking vistas of far-off cliffs, and isolation, but fewer hoodoos. On the other hand, Zion's distinctive collection of flora and animals will amaze you as you take in the past's rich history and the present's exhilarating experiences.

Decades after his death, the legend and legacy of ‘Mr. Las Vegas’ and his southern Utah mobster hideaway live on
From the desert inn to the d.i. ranch, moe dalitz lived large, long and prospered. it is said the bootlegger-turned-business-tycoon beat every rap — save for his checkered past..
(The Mob Museum) Moe Dalitz with a mountain lion he killed while hunting at the D.I. Ranch.
St. George • Southern Utah’s D.I. Ranch, tucked away in a rugged desert valley 25 miles west of St. George, hardly seems like an alluring hangout for a mobster whom Sin City denizens once dubbed “Mr. Las Vegas.”
But Morris Barney Dalitz — called “Moe” by those who knew him best — was no ordinary criminal. By all appearances, he was a gentleman with old-school manners who was popular, polite and eschewed violence.
Ditto for the remote D.I. Ranch, which The Salt Lake Tribune profiled earlier this month . When Dalitz bought it in 1954, it looked nothing like its namesake: the famed Desert Inn luxury resort the gangster owned on the Las Vegas Strip.
Appearances, as the maxim suggests, are often deceiving — as author Michael Newton related in his book “ Mr Mob: The Life and Crimes of Moe Dalitz .”
“America’s most secretive and most successful gangster never spent a night in jail, or even went to trial, despite a life of crime that spanned three-quarters of a century.” He was, Newton and others state, someone who preferred brain over brawn and knew how to keep his hands clean but was not above enlisting mob muscle to do the dirty work.
As for his 831-acre desert haven in southwestern Utah’s backcountry, the D.I. Ranch reputedly became a hideaway for mobsters on the lam and a discreet retreat for prostitutes, showgirls, gamblers and celebrities, like Elizabeth Taylor, on occasion.
(Mark Eddington | The Salt Lake Tribune) This building exists on the site of the D.I. Ranch, 25 miles west of St. George, where reputed Las Vegas mobster Moe Dalitz once lived.
The D.I., cowboy old-timers have attested, was a place patrolled by Uzi-toting guards in pickups and where dead bodies and vehicles were deep-sixed beneath mounds of earth or creek beds.
So who was Moe Dalitz? The answer, it seems, depends on who is asked?
There’s little dispute about his mobster beginnings. Born in Boston, Dalitz later moved to Michigan with his family and went into the laundry business. During Prohibition, he supplemented his laundry income as a bootlegger, ferrying illegal Canadian booze across Lake Erie to the U.S. Soon, Dalitz was linked to the criminal Purple Gang, the Mayfield Road Mob and what some federal officials dubbed “the Cleveland Syndicate.”
He also ran a string of illegal casinos in Ohio, Kentucky and Florida along with a legal one in Havana, which he fortuitously sold before Fidel Castro seized power. As one Cleveland law enforcement officer told members of a congressional committee on organized crime at the time, “ruthless beatings, unsolved murders and shakedowns, threats and bribery came to this community as a result of gangsters’ rise to power. Dalitz was considered part of that rise,” according to a 1999 Las Vegas-Review Journal article.
Too legit to quit
(Las Vegas News Agency via Wikimedia Commons) The Desert Inn hotel and casino in Las Vegas, pictured June 12, 1969. Moe Dalitz owned this longtime resort.
When Congress turned up the heat on organized crime after World War II, Dalitz made a momentous decision. Rather than quit, he would go legit by diversifying his businesses into mostly legal enterprises, shunning the spotlight and steering clear — at least publicly — of notorious ventures.
In 1949, Dalitz and partners Sam Tucker, Morris Kleinman and Louie Rothkopf — known collectively as the “Cleveland Four” — surfaced in Las Vegas, where they took over construction of the Desert Inn that developer Wilbur Clark had started but was too cash-strapped to finish.
Clark stayed on as the affable frontman for the hotel and casino, while Dalitz and his partners were the power behind the throne. Soon, people from across the country flocked to the Desert Inn to carouse, play craps or slots, lounge poolside with cocktails in hand or cluster behind giant windows in the resort’s swanky Sky Room to watch atomic bomb blasts from the nearby Nevada Test Site .
Dalitz pumped $2.7 million into entertainment during the Desert Inn’s first three years to lure top-flight entertainers like Frank Sinatra, who made his Vegas debut at the resort in 1951.
“For six bucks, you got a filet mignon dinner,” Sinatra said, “and me.”
[Read more about southern Utah’s D.I. Ranch , including fringe religious beliefs that it was once home to Adam and Eve and Book of Mormon bandits.]
Buoyed by the resort’s buoyant bottom line, Newton and other historians say, Dalitz parlayed his profits — along with cash infusions from International Brotherhood of Teamsters pension fund loans — into mostly legitimate investments that transformed the Vegas landscape and burnished his tarnished reputation.
(AP Photo, File) Frank Sinatra, in this 1990 photo, made his Las Vegas debut in 1951 at the Desert Inn.
For example, Dalitz invested in the Stardust and Flamingo casinos. He helped build the Las Vegas Country Club , created the PGA Tournament of Champions tour event in Las Vegas and tapped his financial backing and Teamster contacts to help construct Sunrise Hospital , Boulevard Mall , the Las Vegas Convention Center and the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
He also donated generously to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a variety of charities.
“People started seeing Moe as a civic and business leader in Las Vegas rather than a mobster,” said historian Geoff Schumacher, vice president of exhibits and programs for The Mob Museum in Las Vegas. “It got to the point in the 1970s and ‘80s where he was being honored by different organizations as the ‘man of the year’ for his philanthropy and involvement in different causes.”
Dalitz does Muhammad Ali one better
(John Rooney | AP) Muhammad Ali stands over fallen challenger Sonny Liston in their 1965 bout. Dalitz and Liston once went the rounds, so to speak, during an encounter in Hollywood.
Notwithstanding Dalitz’s suave and civilized veneer, he was not above showing some syndicate steel. Dining in Hollywood, Dalitz was once accosted by heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston who told him, “You ain’t such a tough guy away from Las Vegas” and raised his hand as if to strike him.
“If you hit me … you’d better kill me,” Newton quotes Dalitz as replying. “Because if you don’t, I’ll make a phone call and you’ll be dead in 24 hours.
“...Liston couldn’t have been more stunned if he’d been hit over the head with a crowbar,” Newton wrote in “Mr. Mob.” “... Forget Cassius Clay’s ‘phantom punch.’ Moe Dalitz knocked out Sonny Liston with no punch at all.”
(Mark Eddington) Michael Newton's biography of Moe Dalitz, titled “Mr Mob: The Life and Crimes of Moe Dalitz.”
Clay, who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali, ostensibly knocked out Liston with the invisible “phantom punch” in their 1965 title tilt, causing some to speculate the fight was rigged.
Despite such incidents, as well as periodic unwelcome bouts of publicity over his mob ties and alleged skimming from casinos, Dalitz stayed largely above the fray. Even when reporters and investigators landed a stinging blow, civic and elected leaders often rushed to his corner.
On one such occasion, Dalitz approached Clark County Commissioner Thalia Dondero during her Las Vegas mayoral campaign and told her that he would understand if she would rather not be seen with him.
“If I can’t be friends with you, Moe,” Dondero reportedly replied, “I don’t want to be the mayor.”
D.I. days: Holing up and hiding out
(Suzanne Dalitz via The Moe Dalitz Archive) Joe and Averill Dalitz and their daughter, Suzanne, on a visit to the Grand Canyon.
Dalitz’s life in the sunshine and the shadows defy easy description.
“It’s complicated,” Suzanne Dalitz Gollin , a writer who lives in New Mexico, said about her late father and his legacy. “You can sympathize with the plight of a young girl when they told her that her father was a mobster, or with the young woman trying to form an independent identity while being called a mob daughter and having to endure everyone’s ‘Godfather’ movie references.”
Some of Suzanne’s fondest childhood memories are the times she spent with her father and mother, Averill, at the D.I. Ranch, riding her ill-tempered Shetland pony, romping around the grounds or relaxing at the house.
Even though she was just a little girl, Suzanne has vivid memories about the D.I. and how it differed from her Vegas home. Instead of maids and nannies, she remembers, there were cowboys and Paiutes.
She once spotted a rattlesnake on the bunkhouse steps and ran to tell her father, who was skeptical but grabbed his pistol and sauntered outside “like a real gunslinger, moving slowly until he saw the rattler.”
“Whaddya know, you’re right,” Suzanne recalled him saying. “Then he shot the snake dead and made me and my friend Judy hold it up like a trophy for a photograph, even though its guts were getting all over our hands.”
By the time Dalitz bought and built the ranch house, Suzanne explained during a 2016 presentation to the Washington County Historical Society, he had largely left behind his lawbreaking past.
“Dad didn’t want to be a mobster,” she said. “He wanted to be a lion-hunting, cattle-wrangling cowboy and a respected Las Vegas city father.
“...I never did see a single high-rolling customer, prostitute or bodyguard there, which isn’t to say that kind of thing didn’t happen,” added Suzanne, who was 6 years old when her parents divorced.
(Suzanne Dalitz via The Moe Dalitz Archive) Moe Dalitz on horseback at the D.I. Ranch.
Jay Leavitt, who lives in nearby Gunlock, was a boy when his father, Rodney, was Dalitz’s partner and helped manage the D.I. While he doesn’t discount Dalitz’s mobster past, he believes some of the tales spun about him and the ranch are a bit taller than the truth.
“When I was a little boy, we called him ‘Uncle Moe,” Leavitt recalled. “He would send truckloads of toys to kids in Gunlock.”
Jay said his father ran a telephone line all the way from the family’s Gunlock home to the D.I. Both dwellings had old-style crank phones Dalitz and his dad used to keep in touch.
He remembers Dalitz, upon learning he was about to be indicted, bringing his male German shepherd to the Leavitt home and asking his father to look after the dog while he went into hiding.
“He called my dad later,” Jay said, “and asked him to get his dog a girlfriend so he wouldn’t be lonely.”
Larry Shurtleff, who managed the ranch for subsequent D.I. owners Hyrum and Gail Smith in the 1990s, said Rodney Leavitt once told him about the time he was warned by Dalitz that federal agents would be coming to the D.I. in two days.
Facing possible arrest, Dalitz told his partner that he was leaving the country. Sure enough, “the feds” arrived as scheduled, only to find the ranch owner had vamoosed.
“[Dalitz] was always two steps ahead of everybody,” Rodney reported, “because he had moles everywhere and knew exactly what would happen two or three days before anything ever happened.”
Beating the rap, burying the past
In 1967, Dalitz sold the Desert Inn to billionaire recluse Howard Hughes and found a buyer for the D.I. Ranch two years later. He also hobnobbed with celebrities like Sinatra, Bob Hope and Lee Majors and rubbed shoulders with then-Nevada Gov. Paul Laxalt and other prominent politicians, many of whom hailed him as “Mr. Las Vegas” for his philanthropy and business acumen.
Still, his mob roots and relationships loomed too large for some to ignore. By the time of his death at age 89 in 1989 , Dalitz was said to have beaten every rap except his checkered past.
Suzanne recalls watching a home movie a few years ago of a mountain lion her dad caught and caged in an enclosure at the D.I. that he dubbed the “Lion Hilton.” She remembers her father posing by the cage, looking at the lion as it looked back at him.
“In that lion’s plight,” she said, “I could see my dad’s own dilemma, captured as he was by old stories and bad choices, a man destined to be hunted by the press and government for the rest of his years. I see a man on the outside of a lion’s cage [who] was once a mighty predator but now dreamed of a different life, one out on the open range where the past was past and there were no limits to a cowboy’s horizons.”
