Costa Rica in December has great weather. Because it’s the end of the rainy season and the start of the dry season, the entire country is lush and green. But there’s a big difference between traveling to Costa Rica in early December and traveling in late December.

Costa Rica Weather in early December

Visit Costa Rica in early December and the rainy season still lingers in the south Pacific (Osa Peninsula, Corcovado , Drake Bay). By this point, however, the dry season has arrived in the Central Pacific ( Manuel Antonio , Uvita) and North Pacific (Nicoya Peninsula, Tamarindo , Nosara). Early December is also the start of the dry season in San Jose and the Central Valley.

These weather patterns can shift, however, due to El Niño or La Niña . During El Niño years, Costa Rica experiences higher temperatures, shorter rainy seasons and greater drought. In La Niña years, Costa Rica experiences longer rainy seasons and higher than average rainfall.

The best thing about early December: low prices and greater availability at hotels. By late December the situation changes dramatically.

Costa Rica Weather in late December

In all but the wettest years, late December marks the dry season along the entire Pacific coast. This also coincides with Christmas, school vacation, and millions of North Americans daydreaming of tropical vacations.

Not surprisingly, late December is considered one of the best times to visit Costa Rica . It’s peak travel season — both for foreigners and Costa Ricans alike.

In late December Costa Rica hotels are booked months in advance. Even if you can find a room, expect to pay “peak season” prices.

Despite the crowds, there’s nothing like saying Feliz navidad or Feliz año nuevo on a beautiful beach with palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze.

The Papagayo Winds

December marks the start of a weather phenomenon called the Papagayo Winds . These strong winds, which reach speeds of 50 mph with gusts topping 100 mph (a speed normally found only in major hurricanes), blow along Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast for days at a time. Most of the country will be experiencing great weather as the rain season transitions to the dry season at the end of November. By mid-month, tourism cranks up to full speed as travelers from all over the world arrive to spend their holidays in paradise. By the end of December, Costa Rica experiences its busiest tourism season of the year. Sun-worshippers pack the beaches, nature lovers fill the parks, and adventurers are having the time of their lives in the canopy, rivers, and waves! December weather & places to consider visiting.

December truly is a terrific  time to visit Costa Rica ! Insiders will tell you that the beginning of December is one of the best times of the year to visit. It's also of the least visited times as many travelers either choose to come on Thanksgiving or over the Christmas holidays. The period in-between is a fantastic time to travel as the weather is beautiful and many hotels are still offering low season discounts. The landscape is still lush and green, yet the weather is getting drier by the day. While there will be other travelers, beaches will typically be much emptier than they are at the end of the month. As December continues towards the second half of the month, the airports will become packed, and eventually, the beaches are as well! And why wouldn't they? The weather is excellent, and everyone is celebrating the holidays. Well, at least everyone that prepared earlier in the year is celebrating! Most hotels are booked solid by July for Holiday Peak Season dates. Hopefully, you've read this in plenty of time! If not, you may want to consider booking for the following year, unless you are willing to make some concessions.

What to Expect by Region 

December marks the beginning of the dry season for most of Costa Rica. The Pacific side and Central part of the country will see vast improvements in weather, and the Caribbean side will experience a fair amount of rain. The following outlines what you should expect regionally at this time of the year.

The Northwest Pacific and Guanacaste region are in the heart of their dry season by December. The end of the month will pack the beaches and hotels, and the weather is terrific! The streets of towns such as Tamarindo , Samara, Nosara, Coco, and Brasilito are lined with souvenir shops and restaurants to cater to the influx of tourists. December is an excellent time of the year for snorkeling, surfing, catamaran cruises, and scuba diving. It's also a good time for visits to Rincon de la Vieja National Park or even a riverboat trip at Palo Verde. These tours are always better in the sun, and there's no shortage of that in December in Guanacaste! The end of the year is also the best time to see giant leatherback turtles that nest at night at Playa Grande from November through February. Visitors should expect day time temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. Rains are much less frequent and usually only a passing shower in the late afternoon or early evening, if at all.   

December marks the beginning of the dry season on the  Central Pacific  coast. Manuel Antonio and Jaco will see a stark contrast in weather from just a month earlier. By the beginning of December, rain is infrequent and usually limited to occasional passing showers but expect more sunshine than rain. The jungles are still lush and green from the rain season, so it's an ideal time to visit for the best of both worlds. Hikes in the national parks can be quite enjoyable with beautiful scenery and great weather. At the beginning of the month, you can expect a few people, but by the end of the month, parks will be at full capacity. Manuel Antonio National Park limits the number of visitors, so be sure to book it early or at least plan to arrive 20-30 minutes before it opens to ensure you can get in! Visitors can expect daytime temperatures along the coast to be in the mid-80s to lower 90s, with the warmest weather at the end of the month.

December is one of the best times to visit South Pacific areas such as Costa Ballena and the Osa Peninsula . You practically need scuba gear to go on a hike in these areas in September and October! The rains start to taper off in November, and by December, it's getting pretty dry but still lush and beautiful. The end of the year is a great time to visit Corcovado National Park or to go scuba diving or snorkeling at Cano Island. Visitors can expect hot temperatures, usually reaching the lower to mid-90s during the day. The South Pacific is a rainforest region, so we still recommend bringing an umbrella, but you'll likely use it more for the sun than the rain!

The Caribbean side of Costa Rica will be in the middle of the rain season in December. That doesn't mean that it will rain all day every day, but it will rain for at least a little while on most days with a few all-day events occurring occasionally. December is a great time for surfing on Playa Cocles in Puerto Viejo , but not such a great time for activities like snorkeling or scuba diving. It will still be warm, with daytime temperatures usually reaching the mid-80s. 

Arenal Volcano , while located in the middle of the country, is located on Costa Rica's Caribbean slope. In other words, on the eastern flank of the Talamanca Mountains. This area is more affected by Caribbean weather patterns than Pacific but can be affected by both at times. With that said, Arenal is typically somewhat rainy in December. It is a rainforest area, after all, so this shouldn't come as a surprise! The rains can complement the hot springs, which can be a little too hot in the dry season, especially during the day. Most adventure and nature tours still carry on, whether it is raining or not. Bring an umbrella and a rain jacket and have a blast! It will be a little cooler than average in December, so expect daytime temperatures to reach the low to mid-70s.

While located only 15 km as the crow flies from Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest is more affected by the Pacific weather patterns. In December, visitors should expect a little less rain than usual, but this is a cloud forest region, and it can rain any day of the year. Visitors should prepare with rain gear and warm, quick-dry clothing. December is a transition month, and temperatures can fluctuate fairly significantly, particularly at the beginning of the month. By the end of the month, daytime temperatures will usually reach the low 70s with lower temps in the higher elevations of the cloud forest. 

Prices Can Vary Significantly

Most tour and transportation costs will remain the same throughout December, but the hotel and rental car rates vary significantly. The beginning of December can be one of the more affordable times to visit Costa Rica as many hotels offer low season rates until around December 15 - 20. But at that time an through the end of the month, expect the highest prices of the year. The holiday peak season is by far the costliest and most popular time to visit Costa Rica. When comparing an average hotel's rates from low season to peak season, rate increases can range from 50% - 300% increases! 

When Should I Book for December Travel Dates?

As you can imagine, this varies significantly, but there is a common theme, book early. Costa Rican hotels rely on early reservations and compete for the first 50% of their desired occupancy in the golden 3-8 month in advance range for low and regular reason dates. Once they reach that desired occupancy, they relax and increase prices. It's much different for the holiday peak season. You can't possibly book early enough! Many of the smaller, high-end boutique hotels are simply impossible to book as they are often booked a year and a half to two years in advance by groups of family, friends, or even corporate incentive groups. The top-tier of small luxury hotels that do not permit group bookings sell out as early as April, with the majority of the better midrange hotels fully booked by July. The larger chain resorts, such as the Margaritaville, Westin, Secrets, and Dreams, will have availability through October, but the prices just keep increasing along with their occupancy. The best rates are early in the year and expect them to continue to increase throughout the year.

Update for 2020

Due to the coronavirus situation, as of mid-April, pricing and availability have significantly changed for December 2020. Many of the small boutique hotels that were booked solid for the end of the year by a single group of travelers received cancellations. The cancellations opened them up to free sale, which generally is not possible by this time of the year. The opening of availability has caused an unusual situation. Many travelers previously scheduled to travel in March, April, and May are now rescheduling for the holiday peak season. This change in travel flow created a situation we hadn't seen before as we went from limited availability to abundant availability, and now a mad dash by travelers to book these great hotels and the best rooms all at once. All we can add is our observations and the old saying "book it while the bookin's good"!

December 1 - Festival de la Luz- San Jose weeklong Festival of the Lights with concerts and fireworks.

December 4 - Fiesta Pattronale Pavas - street fair with music, dancing, food, and bullfighting (no bloodshed).

December 8 - Immaculate Conception, Fiesta do Los Negritos-religious masses and processions and costume dancing.

December 12 - Fiesta de la Yeguita-Bull Fighting, followed by a parade in Parque Central Nicoya with foods, concerts, and fireworks.

December 24 - Misa de Gallo-Christmas Eve midnight mass.

December 25 - Christmas Day celebrated by family gatherings and dinners.

December 31 - New Year's Eve - Festivities will occur across the country.

For travelers who enjoy nature, adventure, gorgeous beaches and rainforests, and wildlife encounters, Costa Rica is a fantastic place to visit. This Central American country is an amazing option for those who are looking to get away from the cold winter that some countries experience during December. The country's dry season, from late November through April, is the most popular (and expensive) time to visit . Visitors will find not only some of the most favorable weather of the year but many fun events ranging from holiday festivals with music and dazzling lights to horse parades with drinking, dancing, and locals dressed as cowboys.

Costa Rica Weather in December

December is the middle of the winter season for most of the northern countries. However, Costa Rica experiences some of its best weather of the year—just in time for the Christmas holidays. In most of the country, the rainy season is officially over by the middle of November, when the climate gets a bit colder, windier, and less muggy, providing gorgeous clear skies and sunny days. This happens in much of Central America during this time of the year.

• San José: 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius) / 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius)
• Puerto Limón: 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius) / 69 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius)
• Alajuela: 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) / 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius)
• Heredia: 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) / 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius)

Areas around San José are relatively dry during December, receiving around 1.6 inches of rainfall, but other regions like Manuel Antonio on the Pacific side and Limón on the Caribbean side receive much more. The latter can receive upwards of 12 inches throughout December. The country as a whole is quite humid, with humidity occasionally exceeding 88 percent in many areas.

What to Pack

Costa Rica is a small country, but it's also home to 12 different microclimates, which can make packing tricky. As a general rule, casual attire is OK throughout the country. May through November is the rainy season in Costa Rica, but it can still rain any time of year, so bring a raincoat or poncho. Also pack hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a sun hat.

December Events in Costa Rica

Costa Ricans love a good celebration, and there are tons of cool events to take part in during the month of December. On Christmas Day and the week after December 25, most of Costa Rica erupts in celebrations with fireworks, fruits, and festivals. Many Tico (native Costa Rican) children celebrate Santa Claus, and traditional food is everywhere.

• Festival de la Luz : This event full of Christmas spirit has taken place in San José since 1996. The festival includes lighting displays, concerts, parades, floats, and fireworks after dark in the park.
• Fiesta de los Diablitos: Held in Boruca starting in late December, this event features local villagers in colorful devil masks, dressing as the indigenous in mock battles against Spanish conquerors.
• Fiesta de la Yeguita: During this mid-December event, you will see bullfights and a parade in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, followed by a large Tico style party at the central park of Nicoya with food, concerts, and fireworks.
• Misa de Gallo: Locals dress up for this Christmas Eve midnight mass. Named "mass of the rooster," folklore claims that roosters announced the birth of Jesus at midnight. Afterward, everyone enjoys the main Christmas meal, typically including tamales, drinks like rum punch and egg nog, and desserts.
• El Tope : The country's biggest and most popular horse parade goes through downtown San José on December 26. Visitors and locals drink, dance, dress like cowboys, and celebrate.
• Carnival of Desamparados: Enjoy costumed participants, musical groups, dance ensembles, and floats along San Jose's main streets on December 27. 

December Travel Tips

• While the Christmas season is an extraordinary time to visit Costa Rica, it’s also hectic. Children are on school holidays usually starting the second week in December, so many families are on vacation and the beaches will be a bit more crowded than usual. Many businesses are also closed all week.
• Since December is the peak travel season in Costa Rica, it's a more expensive time, so book your accommodation and other reservations early. Ideally, confirm reservations before the end of October.
• El Niño and La Niña weather systems can occasionally impact Costa Rica. These systems kick the dry season into gear a few weeks earlier than normal. Travelers should also be aware of papagayos , strong winds that are common in the northwest.
• If you're planning to drive, roads can be tricky in early December, especially in more rural areas. Months of rain can cause landslides that lead to road closures and other detours.

Should you visit Costa Rica in December? 

December in Costa Rica is the beginning of the dry season in most parts of the country. This time of year is often referred to as “verano” or summer. It is also one of the most popular months of the year to visit the country. 

As a couple who lives in Costa Rica, we have become somewhat experts of what to expect in the country by month. We think December is a great time to visit, but there are a few things you should know before packing your suitcase and heading to this tropical paradise. 

From chilling in the cloud forests to catching waves on the beach, we created this post to break down the best spots and tips for your December adventure in Costa Rica. So, let’s get to it!

Should You Visit Costa Rica in December?

I think there is never a “best time” or “worst time” to visit Costa Rica. But, different months definitely bring different pros and cons. Here is what you can expect for pros and cons in December in Costa Rica. 

Pros of Visiting in December

• It is the start of the dry season . So, the weather starts to completely clear up. You probably won’t experience too much (or any) rain, especially at the end of the month.
• Everything still looks lush and green from the heavy rainy season.
• In the first half of the month, the madness of dry season hasn’t fully begun yet. 
• There are a lot of fun cultural opportunities, especially around Christmas time.

Cons of Visiting in December

• Things start to get more expensive as the high season begins. It is hard to find lower prices for hotels, rental cars, and activities.
• There is more demand for hotels, rental cars, activities etc.
• The Costa Rican school year ends, so a lot of locals will be traveling as well (roads are busier, more things are booked out etc.).
• The weather can be really windy, especially in the central part of the country.

Our Opinion

In our opinion, December is a really great time to visit. However, you definitely should book things as early as possible. 

If you wait too long, all the affordable and nice hotels will be taken. This goes for transportation and activities as well.

We also find that a lot of the main tourist attractions become a bit overwhelming. So, if you plan on visiting places such as Manuel Antonio National Park, it is best to start your day early and enjoy this before everyone else wakes up. 

Costa Rica Weather in December

Although Costa Rica is a small country, it is home to several different microclimates. That means that Costa Rica’s weather can vary greatly depending on what part of the country you are visiting 

Here is what you can expect from the weather in Costa Rica in December by region. 

Caribbean Coast

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica , which includes areas like Puerto Viejo, Cahuita , and Tortuguero , has a distinct weather pattern compared to the Pacific coast. Here’s what you can typically expect in December:

• Rain: December is part of the rainy season for the Caribbean coast, which means you can expect more frequent rainfall compared to the Pacific side. The rain usually comes in short, intense showers, often in the late afternoon or evening. But, it can sometimes last longer.
• Temperature : Daytime temperatures usually hover around 81°F to 86°F (27°C to 30°C)
• Humidity : High humidity is standard, given the tropical rainforest environment. It can often feel quite muggy, especially after a rain shower.
• Sunshine : Despite being the rainy season, you can still expect periods of sunshine. Mornings are often clear and sunny, with clouds and potential rain building up as the day progresses.
• Sea Conditions: The Caribbean Sea is warm, with average temperatures usually around 81°F (27°C)

A few tips if you’re visiting the Caribbean coast in December:

• Be Prepared for Rain : Bring lightweight rain gear, including a waterproof jacket or poncho and quick-drying clothing.
• Accommodations: Some places might have reduced prices due to it being the off-peak season for this region. However, because it’s a popular time for travel overall in Costa Rica, it’s still a good idea to book accommodations in advance.
• Flexibility : With the unpredictable weather, it’s useful to be flexible with your plans. For instance, if the morning is sunny, take advantage of outdoor activities early on.

While the Caribbean coast in December can be wetter than other parts of Costa Rica, it also has its unique charm. We like to visit here because it is less crowded.

We suggest visiting Tortuguero for a really unique experience or Cahuita for a chance to explore the Cahuita National Park and go snorkeling along coral reefs. 

The Guanacaste region , located in the northwest part of Costa Rica on the Pacific coast, has a different climate from the Caribbean side. It is often referred to as the “Gold Coast” due to its sunny weather

Here’s what you can typically expect in December for Guanacaste:

• Rain : December marks the beginning of the dry season for Guanacaste. During the early part of the month, you might still experience some residual rains from the rainy season, but it becomes drier as the month progresses.
• Temperature : Daytime temperatures in Guanacaste typically range from 82°F to 91°F (28°C to 33°C)
• Sunshine : Expect plenty of sunshine in December. This makes it an ideal time for beach activities and outdoor exploration.
• Sea Conditions : The Pacific waters are usually around 81°F to 84°F (27°C to 29°C)
• The gorgeous beaches in Guanacaste, like Tamarindo , Playa Flamingo , and Playa Hermosa , offer good conditions for swimming, surfing, and other water activities.

A few tips if you’re visiting the Guanacaste region in December:

• Sun Protection : With the strong tropical sun, ensure you have sun protection such as high SPF sunscreen , a wide-brimmed hat , and sunglasses.
• Accommodations : December is a peak travel time due to the holidays and the beginning of the dry season. It’s recommended to book accommodations, tours, and transportation in advance.
• Water Intake : The warmer temperatures and sun can be dehydrating, so always carry a full water bottle with you and stay hydrated, especially if you’re participating in outdoor activities. It always shocks us how fast we get dehydrated when we come back after being away from Costa Rica for a few months.

Nicoya Peninsula

December on the Nicoya Peninsula is a gateway month. The end of the rainy season gives way to the approaching sun-drenched days of great weather.

• Rain:  The Nicoya Peninsula is transitioning from the rainy season to the dry season in December. This means you can expect drier conditions, especially in the latter half of the month. However, the occasional rain shower or afternoon downpour can still occur early in the month.
• Temperature:  Being a coastal region, it’s warm and tropical. Daytime temperatures can range from 82°F to 91°F (28°C to 33°C). Evenings are slightly cooler, but still comfortably warm.
• Humidity:  While the humidity starts to decrease as the dry season approaches, it’s still present, especially after the occasional rain shower. The beach areas can feel muggy at times.
• Sunshine:  December sees a significant increase in sunny days, particularly as the month progresses. The sun can be quite strong, so precautions are needed if you’re out on the beaches or exploring the coastal towns.
• Sea Conditions:  The Pacific waters are warm and inviting. The Nicoya Peninsula has some fantastic surfing spots, and December can offer good conditions for both beginners and experienced surfers.

Tips for visiting the Nicoya Peninsula in December:

• Accommodations:  December, being a popular travel month, means accommodations can fill up quickly, especially in popular spots like Santa Teresa. Consider booking in advance.
• Road Conditions:  Some roads in the Nicoya Peninsula can be challenging, especially after rains. If you’re renting a car, a 4×4 might be a good choice.

Central Valley

The Central Valley of Costa Rica , which encompasses cities like San José (the capital), Alajuela , Heredia, and Cartago , offers a unique set of weather conditions compared to the coastal regions.

Here’s what you can generally expect in December:

• Rain : December in the Central Valley is transitioning from the rainy season to the dry season. So, while you can still expect occasional rain showers, especially in the earlier part of the month, they tend to decrease in frequency and intensity as the month progresses.
• Temperature: The Central Valley’s elevation provides milder temperatures than the coasts. The daytime average temperature typically ranges between 68°F to 81°F (20°C to 27°C). Nights are cooler, often dropping to around 59°F to 64°F (15°C to 18°C).
• Wind : The Central Valley tends to get really windy in December. As someone who lives here, it’s actually one of my least favorite times of year. The wind makes it kind of cold (OK…cold is a relative term, but still). Also, note that if you are landing at the San Jose Airport the landing at this time of year can sometimes be a bit bumpy because of the strong winds.
• Sunshine : As December progresses and the region moves into the dry season, you can expect more clear, sunny days, especially in the latter half of the month.

A few tips if you’re visiting the Central Valley in December:

• Layer Up : Given the cooler evenings and mornings, it’s a good idea to have a light sweater or jacket handy, especially if you’re out and about during those times.
• School Vacation : During the end of December, the city clears out as a lot of families head to the beaches. 
• Markets : Local markets, like the Central Market in San José, are great places to taste local foods, buy souvenirs, and engage with local vendors. This is especially fun in December because you can get the chance to try traditional holiday food items. 

Central Pacific

The Central Pacific region of Costa Rica, which includes popular destinations such as Jacó , Manuel Antonio , and Quepos , has its own climatic nuances.

• Rain: The Central Pacific begins to transition from the rainy season to the dry season in December. The early part of the month may still witness occasional rain showers, especially in the afternoons or evenings, but these decrease as the month progresses.
• Temperature : You can expect warm temperatures in this part of the country. Daytime highs generally range between 82°F to 91°F (28°C to 33°C). Nights are slightly cooler but still comfortably warm.
• Humidity : The humidity is noticeable but starts to decrease throughout December as the area enters the dry season. Still, the lush environment can bring bouts of mugginess, especially after rain showers.
• Sunshine : December sees increasing amounts of sunshine, especially in the latter half of the month. It’s a great time for beach activities and exploring national parks.

A few tips for visiting the Central Pacific region in December:

• Accommodations : December can be busy due to the holiday season and improving weather. It’s recommended to book accommodations and tours in advance. Plus, this is the closest coast to San Jose. This means that towards the end of December, a lot of locals living in San Jose head here and are booking hotels as well.
• Wildlife Viewing : Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most biodiverse areas in the country. If visiting, go early to avoid crowds and increase the chances of wildlife sightings.

South Pacific

The South Pacific region of Costa Rica (also known as the Osa Peninsula), encompasses areas like Puerto Jimenez , Drake Bay , Uvita , and Pavones. It is known for its rich biodiversity and pristine landscapes. 

Here’s what you can expect in December:

• Rain: The South Pacific tends to have a more extended green season than the Central Pacific. December is a transitional month. There is a reduction in rainfall compared to the previous months. However, occasional showers, especially in the afternoons or evenings, are still possible.
• Temperature: The South Pacific is warm, with daytime temperatures generally ranging between  82°F to 90°F (28°C to 32°C). Nights are a bit cooler but remain comfortably warm.
• Humidity: High humidity is typical due to the lush rainforests in the region. The environment can feel quite muggy, especially after rain showers.
• Sunshine: As the region transitions into the dry season, there’s an increase in sunny days, particularly towards the latter half of December.

A few tips for visiting the South Pacific region at the start of the dry season:

• Prepare for Rain: Even though the dry season is approaching, having waterproof gear, like a rain jacket or poncho, is essential. Quick-drying clothing and waterproof bags can also be handy.
• Insect Repellent: Given the dense rainforests and high humidity, mosquitoes and other insects can be prevalent. Definitely bring a good insect repellent .
• Road Conditions: If you’re driving, be cautious. Some roads, especially those leading to more remote areas, can be challenging, especially after rains.

The Northern Mountains

The Northern Mountains of Costa Rica include prominent destinations like Monteverde and La Fortuna (near Arenal Volcano). This area offers a unique blend of cloud forests, volcanic landscapes, and cooler temperatures. 

• Rain: December is the transition from the rainy season to the dry season in the Northern Mountains. While the frequency of rain decreases, especially as the month progresses, Monteverde (being a cloud forest) can still have misty and drizzly conditions.
• Temperature: Due to its elevation, the region experiences cooler temperatures. In Monteverde, daytime temperatures might range from 64°F to 75° (18°C to 24°C). La Fortuna, is at a lower elevation so it can be a bit warmer. Typically temperatures range from 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C). Nights in both areas are cooler.
• Humidity: Humidity can be high, especially in Monteverde, where the cloud forest environment creates moist and misty conditions.
• Sunshine: December sees an increase in sunny days, especially in La Fortuna. However, Monteverde, due to its unique cloud forest ecosystem, can remain overcast even on drier days.
• Visibility: On clear days, especially after rain, views of the Arenal Volcano from La Fortuna can be spectacular.

A few tips for visiting the Northern Mountains in December:

• Layered Clothing: Due to the cooler temperatures, especially in Monteverde, it’s recommended to wear layered clothing. A light jacket or sweater can be useful in the evenings and early mornings.
• Rain Gear: Even though December is dryer, having a rain jacket or poncho is a good idea, especially for Monteverde. Waterproof shoes or boots can also be handy for muddy trails.
• Advance Bookings: December is a popular travel month, so booking accommodations, especially in places like La Fortuna with views of Arenal Volcano, is recommended.
• Footwear: If you’re exploring cloud forests or hiking near the volcano, wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Trails can be slippery, especially if it has rained.

What to Pack for Costa Rica in December

When packing for Costa Rica for the month of December, consider the following items:

• Passport & Copies: Always keep a digital or photocopied paper copy as a backup.

The Best Places to Visit / Places to Avoid in December

All places in Costa Rica are decent to visit in December. However, there are a few things you should know before choosing your trial destinations.

Places to Visit in December

• Manuel Antonio National Park: The most popular park in the whole country. It offers an abundance of natural beauty including; white sand beaches dotted with palm trees, lush rainforest, and diverse wildlife including sloths and monkeys. Just get here early in the morning and book your tickets far in advance .
• Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve : Experience a high-altitude rainforest with misty conditions, a little rain, rich biodiversity, and canopy tours.
• Arenal Volcano National Park and La Fortuna: Explore the majestic volcano, take a dip in the thermal hot springs, and enjoy various adventure activities.
• Corcovado National Park : Located on the Osa Peninsula, it’s considered one of the most biodiverse places on earth. However, it’s a bit more rugged and remote, making it ideal for more adventurous travelers.
• Tortuguero National Park: Known as the “Amazon of Costa Rica”, it’s a maze of water channels great for boat tours. However, note that this time of the year is outside the main sea turtle nesting season.

Places to Avoid in December

• Popular Beaches on Weekends : Local families tend to flock to the beaches during weekends in December, especially around Christmas and New Year. These could include Jacó, Manuel Antonio, and Tamarindo.
• Central Pacific Coast : This region, especially around Jacó and Manuel Antonio, can be particularly crowded since it’s easily accessible from San José.
• Tourist Hotspots During Holidays: The period between Christmas and New Year’s sees a surge in both international and domestic tourism. Book accommodations and day trips well in advance if you’re traveling during this period.
• Caribbean Coast (Cahuita and Puerto Viejo) : December can still be a bit rainy here compared to the Pacific side.

December Holidays and Festivities

Here are the holidays and festivities going on in December.

December 8th- Immaculate Conception (La Inmaculada Concepción de María) : This is a national holiday, and it’s an important religious celebration for Costa Ricans. Many people attend church services. As it’s a public holiday, banks, government offices, and some businesses are closed.

Mid-December – Festival de la Luz (Festival of Light) : Held in San José, this festival marks the beginning of the Christmas season. It includes a nighttime parade with illuminated floats, marching bands, dancers, and fireworks. Thousands of people line up along the streets of San José to witness this event.

December 24th – Christmas Eve : A lot of people attend evening church services and celebrate with their families.

December 25 – Christmas Day (Navidad) : Just like many countries around the world, Christmas is a significant holiday in Costa Rica. Families gather to celebrate with feasts, music, and church services. Keep in mind that Costa Rica is a primarily Catholic holiday, so this day is very significant.

On Christmas, the traditional meal is tamales. Tamales are made by families as a fun activity on the days leading up to Christmas. Every family makes them a little different. If you get the chance to try traditional tamales, you do not eat the banana leaf. Undo the twine, peel back the banana leaf, and eat the delicious filling.

December 26 – El Tope Nacional : This is one of the country’s most significant horse parades. It is held in San José. Thousands of riders from all over the country come to participate, showing off their high-stepping horses. It’s pretty cool to see. I had never seen horses walk like that before coming to Costa Rica.

Late December to Early January – Zapote Festival : This festivity is held in the Zapote district of San José on the fair grounds. This festival is known for its traditional bullfights (where the bull is not harmed), carnival rides, games, food stalls, and live music.

December 31 – New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja): While not an official public holiday, Costa Ricans celebrate New Year’s Eve with parties, family gatherings, music, dancing, and fireworks. Many beaches along the Pacific coast, like Tamarindo and Jacó, host parties and events. 

January 1st- New Years Day : New Years Day is a national holiday and people will have this day off of work. 

Just Note: This is not a festival or holiday, but the school year ends for Costa Rican students usually the week before Christmas. They will then have their “summer break” and start school again in the middle to end of January.

I tell you this because a lot of Costa Rican families will be traveling around the country as well at this time. 

Booking Transportation in December

We suggest booking your transportation for Costa Rica in December as early as possible. 

With transportation it is not so much about getting the best deals, but more so about getting any transportation at all. 

See, the prices of rental cars and shuttles are usually set ahead of time, so the price won’t necessarily be lower if you reserve far in advance. However, things book out fast.

In our opinion, having a rental car is always the best way to get around the country. It will give you the most flexibility and will allow you to enjoy fun day trips without depending on tours with transportation.

For December, you don’t usually need a 4×4 vehicle, but we suggest booking an SUV for decent clearance for hilly roads.

Booking Hotels in December

As with transportation, we suggest booking your hotels as early as possible. Hotel prices go up a lot in December!

To find a great place without the higher prices it is somewhat essential you book early. This is especially important in coastal areas and popular tourist towns. 

I suggest  Booking.com  for hotels and VRBO for vacation rentals. Search by places with free cancellation if you are concerned about your plans potentially changing. 

Booking Things to Do in December

Usually in Costa Rica, it is not really necessary to book a lot of day excursions ahead of time. However, for December, I would suggest booking your activities as early as possible.

Our go-to website for booking things to do is Viator . Here you can find adventurous activities, wildlife guides, catamaran tours etc. from reputable Costa Rican travel companies.

We like Viator because it takes out the work of searching for tours yourself and you have the backing of a big company for things like online payments.

Travel Tips for Visiting in December

• Book in Advance: December is a peak tourist month due to holidays and the warm weather. Ensure that you book accommodations, transportation, and tours well in advance.

From experience, I’d definitely suggest renting a car in Costa Rica . The road signage is lacking, especially in San Jose, but otherwise the driving here is pretty easy. It’ll also allow you to explore more beaches, hikes, and other sites !

I have to admit: I’m partial to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast , even though it’s rainier and the December weather is better for the beaches on the Pacific Coast!

Costa Rica is a relatively small country, but it’s home to a diverse climate, largely due to its varying elevations and geographical features. 

In December, you can expect pleasant weather throughout most of the country. The dry season begins in December and lasts until April, making it an ideal time for travelers seeking outdoor adventures.

• December Temperatures : December brings comfortable temperatures to Costa Rica, ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C) in most regions. This moderate climate is perfect for exploring the country’s natural wonders.
• Low Humidity : One of the advantages of visiting Costa Rica in December is the low humidity. You’ll be able to hike and explore the outdoors, without feeling overly sweaty! 
• Clear Skies : Costa Rica’s dry season means clear skies and plenty of sunshine, so it’s ideal for hitting the beaches on either coast!

Costa Rica December Rainfall

As always, the weather can be unpredictable. While December is considered to be the beginning of the dry season, some regions will still see some rainfall:

• Regional Variations : Rainfall patterns in Costa Rica can vary by region. The Caribbean coast tends to be wetter, while the Pacific coast experiences drier conditions. 
• In Wetter Regions , the rain typically comes in short bursts, leaving plenty of time for outdoor activities.
• Lush Landscapes : The occasional rain in December keeps Costa Rica’s rainforests and other landscapes, lush and green. 

Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast in December 

The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, including the province of Limon and town of Puerto Viejo, has a bit of a different climate, compared to other parts of the country.

• Climate : Costa Rica’s Caribbean side experiences a more tropical and humid climate throughout the year, including December. While December marks the beginning of the dry season in most of Costa Rica, this region can still receive substantial rainfall.
• Temperature : December temperatures along the Caribbean Coast typically range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C). It’s warm and comfortable, but the higher humidity can make it feel even warmer.
• Rainfall : December falls within the region’s “green season,” so be prepared for occasional rain showers. These rains are often short and intense, and the skies will clear afterwards.
• Beaches : Despite the rain, December is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. The beaches are unique: One has black sand, while another is home to a famous shipwreck !
• Wildlife: The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is home to diverse wildlife and pristine beaches.
• Sanctuary: I’d also definitely recommend a stop at the Jaguar Rescue Center to see the monkeys, sloths, and other animals in rehab.

Arenal Region in December

The Arenal area of Costa Rica, which is known mostly for its iconic volcano, offers a unique climate and a wealth of outdoor activities in December.

• Climate : December in Arenal is relatively dry. You can almost bet on sunny, warm days on your visit.
• Temperature : In Arenal, daytime temperatures hover between the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C) in December. Nights can be cooler.
• Rainfall : While Arenal is drier in December compared to other months, you may have a rare light shower move through.
• Activities : People visiting Arenal in December are likely heading to its volcano to hike around.  It’s also a great time to relax in the natural hot springs, take canopy tours, or go horseback riding. With the clear skies in December, stargazing at night is also very popular around Arenal!

Costa Rica’s West Coast in December

The West Coast of Costa Rica, including popular destinations like Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio, offers a different climate compared to the Caribbean Coast.

• Climate : December is the heart of the dry season on Costa Rica’s Western Coast.  The sunny, dry weather attracts crowds to the beaches in December.
• Temperature : Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is also warmer in December. You can expect daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (29-35°C). Evenings are generally still pretty mild.
• Rainfall : Rainfall is minimal on Costa Rica’s West Coast in December. You’re likely to experience sunshine and clear skies.
• Activities : December attracts beach lovers, surfers, snorklers and divers to Costa Rica’s West Coast.  Beyond the beautiful beaches, the region also boasts diverse wildlife, and you can explore national parks like Manuel Antonio.

Costa Rica offers a wide range of activities and attractions that cater to all kinds of interests. Here are some must-consider options for your December visit to Costa Rica:

Costa Rica’s Beaches

With its extensive coastline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world !  As I discussed above, you’ll find different kinds of weather on each coast, but honestly- December will be beautiful on either coast.

• Popular Beach Destinations : Some of the popular beach destinations include Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and Santa Teresa. You can relax on the sandy shores, surf, or go snorkeling and scuba diving in crystal-clear waters.
• Turtle Nesting : December is also the season for sea turtles to nest on Costa Rica’s shores. You might witness them laying eggs, or see the hatchlings crawl toward the waves for their first time.  I couldn’t believe our luck when we found conservationists releasing newly-hatched turtles into the Caribbean!

Visiting the Volcanoes

Costa Rica is home to numerous volcanoes, and December is a fantastic time to explore the mountainous landscapes.

• Arenal Volcano : Arenal is one of the most iconic volcanoes in Costa Rica. While it’s not currently erupting, the volcano and its surroundings offer a range of activities. You can hike through Arenal Volcano National Park, soak in natural hot springs, or take canopy tours. The clear December skies provide excellent visibility for enjoying panoramic views.
• Poás Volcano : Poás is known for its active crater with a constantly boiling lake of sulfuric acid. The park around Poás Volcano is easily accessible from San Jose.
• Rincón de la Vieja Volcano : In Rincón de la Vieja National Park, you can hike to the summit and explore the park’s geothermal features, including mud pots and hot springs.
• Irazú Volcano : Irazú is Costa Rica’s highest volcano, known for its striking green crater lake.
• Tenorio Volcano : Located in Tenorio Volcano National Park, this volcano is known for its beautiful Rio Celeste, a river with stunning turquoise waters created by volcanic minerals.
• Turrialba Volcano : Turrialba is an active volcano with a reputation for occasional eruptions. While access to the summit may be restricted during active periods, the surrounding Turrialba Volcano National Park offers hiking trails and scenic viewpoints.

Coffee lovers will love learning about the plants, plantations, and roasting in Costa Rica. December is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica’s coffee farms .

• Coffee Tours : Take informative tours that walk you through the entire coffee production process, from bean to cup. Each tour will include samples of the world-renowned Costa Rican coffee.
• Harvest Season : December is also coffee beah harvest season in some regions. Technically, workers will be picking the ‘cherries’ off the plants in the fields, which then go into the roasting process!

Wildlife Watching

Costa Rica is full of wildlife encounters year-round. Driving around, you’ll see signs, warning you to watch out for sloths and other wildlife in the road.

• Bird Watching : Migratory birds from North America can be spotted in Costa Rica during December. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the increased avian diversity.
• Whale Watching : The Pacific coast becomes a hotspot for humpback whale sightings in December. You may even witness their spectacular breaching behavior.

As I mentioned earlier, I’d definitely recommend a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo!  There are no jaguars, but it’s full of injured sloths, monkeys, and other Costa Rican wildlife.  You’ll learn a lot, and love hearing the stories about the animals in rehab.

Packing for Costa Rica in December

• Light Clothing : Due to the pleasant weather, light and breathable clothing is a must. Consider packing shorts, t-shirts, and comfortable walking shoes.
• Sun Protection : Don’t forget sunblock, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the strong tropical sun.
• Rain Gear : While rain showers are usually brief, it’s wise to carry a lightweight rain jacket or poncho for unexpected showers.
• Bug Repellent : Costa Rica’s lush forests and humid climate make it an ideal habitat for various insects, including mosquitoes. To ensure a comfortable trip, pack effective insect repellent.

Best things to do in Costa Rica in December

Costa Rica is known for having some of the absolute best beaches in Central America, especially on its Pacific Coast. Manuel Antonio Beach is the most famous and is located inside a spectacular national park (more on the park below). However, it's hard to go wrong visiting any beach on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Some of my other favorites include Playa Herradura, Tamarindo and Papagayo. Just watch out for saltwater crocodiles! (I wish I was kidding). Visiting Costa Rica in December is sure to give you some great beach and sun-tanning weather.

Manuel Antonio National Park

It’s hard to find the words to describe how gorgeous Manuel Antonio National Park is. It is an absolute must-visit while you’re in Costa Rica! With lush rainforests, the most stunning white sand beaches and incredible biodiversity, this national park has it all. It is great for hiking, bird watching (if you’re lucky, you’ll see a toucan), relaxing on the beach and seeing monkeys, frogs, sloths and more.

Ziplining through the canopies of a rainforest? Yes, please! Ziplining is the perfect activity to combine adrenaline and nature, soaring through the treetops and looking down into the vast and beautiful jungle below. There’s no shortage of zipline tours in Costa Rica, so wherever you’re staying on the Pacific Coast, a zipline excursion won’t be far.

Coffee Farm

Costa Rica is famous for its gourmet coffee! If you’re a coffee lover (and even if you’re not, like me), touring a coffee farm in Costa Rica is such a unique experience. I specifically recommend visiting Doka Estate Plantation, where you will get an in-depth tour of how coffee is grown, harvested, fermented, roasted and made into the beverage we all know (spoiler alert: coffee beans actually come from berries). The best part is of course the taste test at the end! It’s also great to visit the coffee farms in Costa Rica in December, because December is right in the middle of peak harvesting season, so you’ll actually get to pick your own coffee berries, too.

Along with spectacular rainforests and beaches on the Pacific Coast, Costa Rica is also known for its many volcanoes, both active and dormant. While there are many choices of volcanoes to visit, Arenal is the most famous and recognizable. Depending on where you stay on the coast, it might be a 4 or 5-hour drive up to Arenal, but if you have the time, it is definitely worth the trek! Another amazing and unique volcano much closer to San Jose, and my personal favorite, is Poás, which most recently erupted in April 2017.

There is something so special and freeing about taking a jet ski out on the open ocean, especially when you are in a tropical paradise. There are lots of islands on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, and you can go island hopping via jet ski! It’s so beautiful to ride along the coast, next to the gorgeous white sand beaches and jungle-covered mountains towering above. Many jet ski tours also come with snorkeling gear, so you can take a swim in the warm waters and see lots of beautiful tropical fish!

Chocolate Farm

Along with coffee, Costa Rica is also known for its amazing chocolate! Similar to the coffee farm tour, you can also take a chocolate farm tour and try the cacao fruit straight from the tree. It is fascinating to learn the history of how chocolate, as we know it today, was invented and created from a tropical fruit. We got to try the cacao fruit, straight chocolate (pre-sugar and milk), fresh dark and milk chocolates, Costa Rican hot chocolate and bananas dipped in chocolate. Chocolate heaven! Similar to coffee, December in Costa Rica is the peak harvest season for cacao, making it the perfect time to visit.

Another activity for you adventure lovers, make sure to take an ATV ride through the rainforest. This was one of my favorite activities we did! We rode through the lush green jungle, splashing through mud puddles, and followed a river upstream to a gorgeous waterfall! Not every ATV ride will have a waterfall, but it will still be an exhilarating and gorgeous ride nonetheless. We did our ATV ride at Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park near Jacó.

Butterfly Sanctuary

Costa Rica also has tons of butterfly sanctuaries and conservatories, typically full of stunning bright blue butterflies. You can learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly from caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly, and see them majestically flying around. Butterflies typically thrive in the wet season, so while December is not peak butterfly season in Costa Rica, it is right at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season, so there are still many opportunities to see the butterflies.

San Jose, Grecia and Sarchí make great day trips in Costa Rica. Outside of some day trips to visit volcanoes or a national park, I do recommend including at least one city sightseeing day amid your adventure-packed nature vacation. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica (and is likely where you will fly into). It is a wonderful city, filled with some of the best restaurants in the whole country, parks, and museums and is a great place to learn more about Costa Rican history and culture. Grecia and Sarchí are not too far outside of San Jose, and are pretty close to Poás Volcano as well, in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica. Grecia is famous for being the “cleanest town” in all of Latin America, and I will say, it is immaculate! One of the coolest and most notable sites there is their church: Iglesia de la Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes. What makes it unique is that it is made entirely from sheet metal.

A fun fact about Costa Rica: one of their national symbols is the ox cart, representing hard work, the spirit and vitality of the Costa Rican people. But, these are no ordinary ox carts. Costa Rican ox carts are all handmade and hand painted with beautiful bright colored designs. The best place to see them? Sarchí, which is the arts and crafts capital of Costa Rica. You can tour an ox cart factory and see how they are painstakingly crafted and painted. This was one of the most unique and memorable experiences of my trip to Costa Rica, and I highly recommend taking the time to visit.

A note from Bria

Costa Rica has two main international airports - San Jose (SJO) in its capital in central Costa Rica and Liberia (LIR) in the north. If you’re going to the northwest coast, and if you want to be closer to Arenal, I’d recommend flying into Liberia. LIR is ideal for beach towns like Papagayo and Tamarindo. However, SJO is much more accessible to the majority of Costa Rica, including most of the Pacific Coast, and destinations like Playa Herradura and Manuel Antonio.

Places to eat & drink in Costa Rica

Before suggesting some restaurants, I do want to point out some must-try foods while in Costa Rica.

Casado - A very traditional and delicious Costa Rican meal. This is a plate served with a little bit of everything: rice, beans, plantains, salad, tortillas and some sort of protein. It is typical to eat casado for lunch, as lunch is typically the largest portioned meal of the day in Costa Rica.

Gallo Pinto - Traditional Central American rice and beans dish. While simple, it is absolutely delicious and has a lot of cultural significance to the Costa Rican people.

Fresh Seafood - Having so much coast on both sides of the country, Costa Rica is definitely known for having fresh seafood. There are tons of seafood dishes to try, but my favorite is Costa Rican ceviche.

Coffee and Chocolate - As mentioned above, Costa Rica is famous for its luxurious coffee and chocolate. If you can’t tour the farms and taste it fresh from the source, there are still tons of places to try Costa Rican chocolate and coffee around the country!

Restaurants Near Manuel Antonio National Park

After a day of adventuring through Manuel Antonio, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Here are two wonderful restaurants not too far from the national park: Agua Azul Café is very close to the national park, and you can sit outside on their patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean! Great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, with a variety of Latin American dishes. Pro tip: Ask to try all of their salsas. Restaurante La Costa is a little bit farther from the park, but not unreasonable to get to. It’s one of the highest-rated restaurants in the area. It is also right on the water, and is the perfect spot to try traditional Costa Rican foods including ceviche and gallo pinto, two of my favorites!

Restaurants Near Jacó and Playa Herradura

This is where we stayed when I visited, so we spent the most time eating at restaurants in this area, and they did not disappoint! My personal favorite was Hacienda Kitchen, another great restaurant for traditional Costa Rican food. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and this was my favorite spot for a Costa Rican breakfast. Along with rice and beans, we were served some gorgeous and delectable tropical fruits, a great way to start the day and fuel up before an adventure! Los Sueños Marina Village also has tons of great restaurants if you are staying in that area. I really liked Bambú Sushi and Asian Cuisine, an Asian fusion restaurant. Costa Rica is known for having delicious and fresh seafood, so the sushi was pretty high quality and a lot of the rolls had a Costa Rican flare.

Restaurants Near Tamarindo

If you’re staying in Tamarindo, start your day off at NOI Bistro. They have Costa Rican breakfast plates, American breakfasts, fresh smoothies and acai bowls. They also serve lunch and dinner, with a variety of foreign and local cuisines, including casado! Another great beach-front restaurant is Nogui’s. They have lots of great seafood, and are famous for their sunset cocktails! It’s a spot frequented by locals and a great place to experience local culture while soaking in the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.

Restaurants Near Papagayo

Poro Poro Restaurant is a favorite on the Papagayo Peninsula, and definitely a great destination for foodies! Their menu is constantly changing, as the head chef loves to innovate and personalize his customer’s culinary experience. If you’re looking for a high-end steakhouse, Nemare is the place to go. You can try their 6-course tasting menu, or order a la carte, all paired with creative craft cocktails.

Need to Know

While Costa Rica is certainly known for its nature, I do recommend taking some time to visit the cities as well and learn more about the history and culture. Speaking with local guides is a great way to immerse yourself. Costa Ricans are all about pura vida, and you’ll definitely feel it wherever you go in the country.

Costa Rica in December

Early December weather in the Costa Rica Mountains is a bit of gamble. The rainy season is typically gone and it’s common to have beach weather during the entire month. However, occasionally the rainy season ends only a week before Christmas , but overall it’s sunny in the morning and it showers in the afternoon or evening.

On the Caribbean side of the mountains, it’s wet at the start of December and gets even wetter by the end of the month.

Beaches and lowlands experience perfect weather for sunbathing (mid-80s during the day and mid-60s at night). Around San Jose , the temperatures are usually 5-10 degrees cooler.

Hotels https://www.costaricatravelscout.com/hotels have higher peak season (up to 50% higher than during the high season) around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. At most resorts the festive dinners are mandatory (and add additional costs to the vacation). Minimum stays range from 3 to 7 nights during this time of the year.

Should you plan to visit Costa Rica in the second half of December, book the hotel and airfare at least six to three months in advance. A good alternative for saving money is to book a hostel bed , but also remember to start your search way in advance.

Things to Do

Your first encounter with Costa Rica will most likely be San Jose, its cosmopolitan capital. Before heading to another place, take some time to enjoy the city’s most important sights. Visit the Jade Museum and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. You can also take a day trip to the Arenal Volcano.

If you don’t manage to visit Arenal Volcano, then just at an hour drive from San Jose you can visit Paos Volcano and you can walk up the crater for some lovely views of the area.

Should you decide to spend some time in the Manuel Antonio National Park, don’t forget your swimsuit and sunscreen because you’ll want to spend some time at the beach. Learn to swim, watch the wildlife or try zip lining in the forest.

If you didn’t have a chance to visit the beaches at Manuel Antonio, head to the Gold Coast beaches in the Guanacaste area. Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Flamingo, Conchal and Ocatol are some of the best choices.

While in Costa Rica, don’t miss taking a coffee tour – you can visit a coffee farm and a processing facility – and enjoying the hot springs. Nature walks are an excellent way to enjoy the natural beauty and don’t worry if you are not a fitness enthusiast. There are 1-3 hours tracks suitable for anyone.

Costa Rica is warm in December, especially in the coastal regions. Generally, the average temperature in the coastal areas is around 30°C (86°F), while in the mountains, it's around 18-22°C (64-72°F). Expect high humidity levels to be high, too.

While the amount of sunshine varies by region, in general, you can expect around 8-9 hours of sunshine per day.

In December, the Pacific coast tends to be drier, with little to no rainfall, while the Caribbean coast receives more rain.

December starts out with lower prices and occupancy during the tail end of the rainy season .

By Christmas the dry season is normally beginning and hotels are sold out at for Christmas and New Years. The trails, zip-lines and white-water rivers are flowing with tourists.

If you’re considering a “ must see vacation ” any time in the second half of December you should book before the end of October or you’ll find yourself scrambling.  The second half of December is not a recommended time to try to wing it and travel without reservations.

Planning Ahead & Reservations

December competes with whichever month Easter falls in (April in 2019) as the most popular for Costa Rica travel.  About 90% of lodge and hotel rooms are booked by the end of September for the week before and after Christmas. It’s the heart of the high season for sun seeking international travelers plus Tico schoolchildren are on holiday.

In 2017 the Caribbean Islands from Barbuda, and the Virgin Islands to Puerto Rico were devastated by hurricane Maria, Irma and 15 other named storms in the most active season in nearly 100 years leaving palm trees were snapped off at the base and many buildings leveled by winds.

In contrast Costa Rica was relatively undamaged.  Although the flooding that accompanied tropical storm Nate (October 2017) was tragic and destructive in Costa Rica there was relatively little damage to tourist infrastructure.  Within a few weeks the beaches were back to normal.

Large numbers of travelers decided to forgo their traditional island destinations and try Costa Rica instead setting records for occupancy in December of 2017.  As of the end of October the second half of December of 2019 is effectively sold out in the more popular destinations.

Reservations (as far ahead as six months to a year for some of the more popular hotels) are strongly advised.  If you’re going to try traveling without reservations consider that the inland and mountain destinations are not quite as popular as the beaches so you might have a bit more flexibility there.

Getting Around

December (especially the first half of the month) can be tricky on the roads.  Just like November the earth is totally saturated from months of rain and any significant storm is likely to set off landslides that frequently cause havoc with getting around. (see rainy season driving tips )

CONAVI tries to have things cleaned up by the holidays but we’ve seen every major road in Costa Rica shut down for a week or more at some point in December (once it was every one of them all at the same time!)

Costs & Availability for Travel in December

Hotels and lodges have higher peak season pricing (20% to 50% more than high season) around Christmas and New Years Eve and many resorts and lodges have mandatory dinners and parties on those two nights (usually $50 to $100 per person). Minimum stays of three to seven nights are also common during the holidays so plan accordingly.

For the second half of December we strongly recommend booking your lodging and airfare at least three months in advance and six to twelve months ahead is better for availability.

December Weather in Costa Rica

Early December weather is unpredictable.  Often the rains taper off and the Pacific enjoys perfect beach weather most of the month. However, occasionally the rainy season continues full force right past Christmas (2017 was abnormally wet well into January along the central and southern Pacific).

On the other hand, in 2013 through the El Niño drought of 2015 it was like someone threw a switch in mid-November.  The rain stopped in the Pacific northwest and tapered off fast across all of the west slope.

For 2019 NOAA is predicting that neither El Niño or La Niña will occur which would imply that the dry season would start on schedule a few weeks before New Years however La Nada years are unpredictable.

On the Caribbean side of the central mountains it’s wet at the beginning of the month and getting wetter by the end. Flooding is possible, especially in the northeast lowlands where polar air pushes across the Gulf of Mexico picking up heat and moisture then depositing it as continuous days of rain referred to locally as temporales del Atlantico .

Another December weather phenomenon is strong winds called “Papagayos.”  These winds are most common in the northwest and are caused by cooler, dry air moving down from the north and displacing the moist, warm dense, tropical air mass. The air moves across Costa Rica as a result of the pressure difference and accelerates through gaps in the central mountain ranges and can exceed 100 kph.

The beaches and lowlands experience high temperatures in the seventies to mid-eighties and  low temperatures in the sixties to mid seventies.  A day or two of temperatures in the mid nineties is possible at low elevations and especially on the Nicoya coast during December. Around San José and the Central Valley temperatures are 5-10 degrees cooler and temperatures at high elevations over 5,000 ft can be 20 or even 30 degrees lower in December.

What the Weather is Like in Costa Rica in December

December weather in Costa Rica is still transitioning to dry season. More and more sun and less and less precipitation is the norm for the month, but it is still possible that it rains much of the time, particularly on the Caribbean side of the country. The winds increase considerably in December which locals call Los Vientos de Navidad (Christmas winds). Also, temperatures are at their lowest during the whole year.

Costa Rica has two seasons instead of four, the rainy season and the dry season. When traveling to Costa Rica in December, you will encounter the dry season (December to April). This time also coincides with the peak tourist season.

These are also the hottest months in Costa Rica, with temperatures averaging 80-90+ degrees Fahrenheit, but December is close enough to the end of the rainy season, and temperatures tend to be milder.

Best places to visit in Costa Rica

Although it may seem counterintuitive, when traveling to Costa Rica in December, it is best to do tourism in the capital, San José (instead of simply using it as a point of embarkation or departure to other areas). There is no shortage of Christmas festivities this month, such as The Festival of Lights or The National Horse Parade.

That does not mean that you should spend all your vacation time in the capital. If you want to enjoy the natural beauty of Costa Rica while avoiding the hordes of tourists, perhaps you should spend two or three days in Tortuguero National Park, located on the Caribbean coast of the country, or go down the beach to the surfing paradise of Puerto Viejo. Even if you are not a surfer, you can enjoy the small-town atmosphere, Afro-Caribbean culture, and crystal clear waters.

1. San José

In San José, you can take a walk through the Central Market, which has more than 200 stores, food stalls, and sodas (small traditional restaurants). Then visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the interior of which combines Greek Orthodox, Neoclassical and Baroque styles and features wood carvings and stained glass windows. 

There are also a couple of famous museums in San José, Museo del Oro Precolombino, and Museo del Jade, the world’s most extensive collection of pre-Columbian jade artifacts.

La Fortuna is the base for exploring the Arenal Volcano National Park.

Located north of the Tilarán Mountains, the cone-shaped Arenal juts out above the San Carlos Plains. If you want to get close to the volcano, kayak, or paddleboarding in Lake Arenal (optional), it is possible and offers spectacular views from its top, or, you can opt for a zip line tour through the forest canopy, where you will cross canyons and see the Fortuna and Pino Blanco Waterfalls, along with the majestic Arenal Volcano. 4. Manuel Antonio National Park

In Manuel Antonio National Park, you can choose and relax on one of the four beautiful beaches in the park, one of the best in Costa Rica. Thinking of heading to Costa Rica in December? December is a popular, and time to visit Costa Rica, and there are some things to keep in mind because of Christmas and other festivities happening during this month.

There are a few perks to visiting Costa Rica in December: December in Costa Rica marks the end of the rain season and start of the dry season , which means the weather will likely be great during that time. There are also Christmas festivities near the holiday season, so you can expect some unique Costa Rican festive experiences that wouldn’t be possible at other times of the year.

Regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, or are looking for a chance to experience Costa Rica and December is the right time – we’re going to walk you through what you can expect during your trip to Costa Rica in December.

Costa Rica in December: Sunrise/Sunset Times and Weather

There are almost 12 hours of daylight in Costa Rica during the month of December. The sun rises at 5:37and 5:52 am and sets sometime between 5:13 and 5:26 pm.

This is similarly true of the rest of the year in Costa Rica; being close to the equator means 12 hours of dark and light 24/7.

The weather during the month of December in Costa Rica is one of the reasons why this is a popular time to travel to Costa Rica at this time. In December, the weather in Costa Rica is at its best.

In December, the temperature in Costa Rica has a high of 32 ° C (89.6 ° F) and a low of 22°C ( 71.6°F) . The cooler temperatures tend to be more prevalent in the mountain areas (the Central Valley – La Fortuna or Monteverde.) If you’re near the coast, you can expect temperatures to be at the warmer end of that spectrum.

Things to Keep in Mind about Costa Rica in December

Here are some things you need to know about vacationing in Costa Rica in December

1. It’s bus ier

The later you visit into the month of December, the busier it will be. Aside from March, December is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica, so you can expect longer wait times in customs, car rental pickup, waiting to check in to your hotel, and things like that.

You’ll still have a great time (its popular for a reason) but you’ll need to be patient at times.

Pro Tip: Book everything you want (hotels, and and activities) far in advance (4-6 months before your date of travel.)

2. You can expect to pay a bit more

Because its busier, the prices might be a bit higher. You still might be able to find some low-season rates in the early days of December, but as it gets later into the month, the prices will increase along with the demand.

The costs for accommodations and tours goes up around peak times, although this is true for most of the dry season. (December through April.)

If you’re travelling to Costa Rica as a family , it’s always useful to keep some good general family budget travel tips in mind.

Make sure to: Check cancellation policies of things that you book in Costa Rica for December. You don’t want to be locked into paying extra for something that it turns out you have to cancel. One thing I like about booking.com is that you can usually get good cancellation policies from hotels there.

3. The beaches (especially around the holidays) will be more crowded

Obviously more tourists = more people on the beach, so that goes without saying. But one thing to keep in mind for December is that there will be many Costa Rican families enjoying the beaches too.

Most schools in December end for break in mid-December, and many families will go on vacation, sometimes for the holidays, or the entire month.

So, this just means that there will be more people on the beach all together, and not just international tourists.

The good news, is that there are a variety of beaches in Costa Rica, some which don’t get as busy as others.

4. Christmas and New Years

Most Costa Ricans identify as Christian, and Christmas is a big holiday in Costa Rica. Most businesses that cater to tourists will still be open on Christmas Eve and Day, but they may close earlier on Christmas Eve.

Grocers and shops can get very busy then, because of the influx of tourists and the Costa Rican vacationers, so there might be limited supply.

Pro Tip: If you’re arriving in Costa Rica right before or on Christmas, then I recommend bringing some supplies you may need in your luggage (toiletries, snacks, baby items if you’re in Costa Rica with a baby , etc.)

5. El Tope Festival (December 26th)

Costa Rica celebrates Tope, which is a festival and parade with horses. The largest Tope festival is held in San José on December 26th each year, which means that trying to get out or into the city would be a traffic nightmare.

When booking your flights for Costa Rica in December, make sure that you aren’t needing to get in or out of San Jose or December 26th.

6. It can still rain

Going to Costa Rica during the dry season doesn’t mean that it doesn’t rain. One trip we took to Costa Rica in March , it rained almost every day. So I recommend preparing by bringing a rain jacket or poncho, even if the risk is low.

Things to Do during December in Costa Rica

Here are things to do in Costa Rica during the month of December (remember to be sure to plan and reserve these types of things well in advance, so that they don’t fill up before you have a chance)

1. Try Rompope

Rompope (pronounced “rom-pom-peh”) is a type of eggnog made in Costa Rica for Christmas. Its very similar to eggnog; the only difference is that its recipe uses only the egg yolk (which gives the drink a yellow tint) and some almonds to give it a hint of a nutty taste.

You can try rompope by buying it from the grocery store in Costa Rica, or ordering it as a drink in a bar.

Fun fact: As well as Costa Rica, rompope is also popular in other Latin American countries around Christmas time, such as Nicaragua and Mexico.

2. Take surfing lessons

For all ages (2 years old) to adult, and ability levels. Learn to surf in one of the best beaches in the world. Try this lesson here offered on Tamarindo beach, if you’re heading to the Guanacaste area.

3. Visit a volcano

This tour takes you to Poas Volcano , as well as La Paz Waterfall and bonus: it even takes you to the one an only Starbucks coffee farm where you can try Starbucks coffee fresh from where it originates.

3. Go hiking in the rainforest

The Costa Rican rainforests are incredible. Some people prefer the beach, but the rainforests are the reason I travel to Costa Rica.

My favourite is the forests with hanging bridges which are usually hundreds of feet high and give you a bird’s eye view of the jungle.

The rainforests are mostly located in the La Fortuna , Monteverde and Manuel Antonio regions. You can do guided, or self-guided tours.

Regardless of which you choose, be sure to book as soon as you can to avoid it filling up, as they do have capacity limits.

3. Visit the Beach

We mentioned that the beach will be more crowded, so this is inevitable. But if you love the beach, then stay nearby, and get there early in the day. There are so many beaches in Costa Rica, and a fair number of them are family-friendly.

People who want to go to Costa Rica for the beaches and resorts often go to the Guanacaste, Jaco or Manuel Antonio region.

These areas will all be popular in December, so be sure to book your hotels close to the beach in advance.

Pro Tip: The best beach for you in Costa Rica will depend on if you want a family-friendly beach, or beach ideal for surfing. Playa Tamarindo however, is good for both!

4. Visit a sustainable farm

One of our favourite things to do in Costa Rica is to visit the farms – they have coffee, chocolate and fruit farms.

What to Bring to Costa Rica in December

Here are the things you want to make sure you bring to Costa Rica during the month of December (or any time of year really)

• Good hiking boots , for adults or for children. This mostly applies if you’re going to be doing jungle tours. This pair is good for men , this for women , and this one for children .
• Light weight rain gear. I can’t stress this enough. It can rain even during ‘dry season’ in Costa Rica. You want rain gear that is very light – like this set , because you don’t want to be boiling (its still hot and humid even when its raining.)
• A good sunscreen , this is a must. Buy a reef-friendly one ideally, that isn’t killing the oceans, like this one
• A mosquito repellant , which you should have at any time of the year in Costa Rica.

1. La Navidad (Christmas)

82% of the population in Costa Rica identify as Christian, so Christmas is a holiday thats widely observed.

Costa Ricans like to decorate their houses with tropical flowers at Christmastime, and its also common for them to attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Christmas is a popular time to visit Costa Rica, for a few reasons: the holidays in North America, and also, its during the dry season which is the most common time to visit Costa Rica by default.

Most businesses that cater to tourists will remain open on Christmas Day (hotels, restaurants, stores and tour agencies.)

El Tope is celebrated in many villages throughout the country in Costa Rica, with the largest festival being in San José.

Horses are an important animal in Costa Rica, and El Tope commemorates Costa Rica’s colonial past when most people relied on horses. The festival draws horse owners with their horses from around the country.

3. El Año Nuevo (New Years)

New Year’s Eve in Costa Rica is a time to be with family. Even older teens and young adults often spend the holiday with their family, not partying with friends as is typical in North America.

Costa Rica has introduced strict laws in recent years limiting the use of fireworks (‘ fuegos artificiales ‘) due to their negative impact on wildlife, so don’t expect to see fireworks on New Year’s Eve in Costa Rica.

However, many hotels organize special dinners or activities on New Years, so depending on where you’re staying, you should enquire to see if they’re doing something special you might want to take part in.

The CR Destinations Summary Guide shows which areas on both the coasts have Surfing as one of the main activities there - https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/costa-rica-destinations-summary-guide/ .

@2, For the experienced surfer parents, I don’t think Samara would be a good choice. I wouldn’t necessarily choose the Caribbean Coast for a beach vacation in December (see https://www.puertoviejosatellite.com/weather.php), as there is probability of rainy days.

I don’t know about typical currents and winds in Montezuma in December.

They should check.out Pavones in the Southern Zone. Off-the-beaten path, world-class surfing.

Is Costa Rica Safe to Visit in 2024? Travel Crime Advice

One of the most common questions we get asked is, “Is Costa Rica safe to visit?” The short answer is, “usually”.

We started this website to give you all the most genuine information about Costa Rica travel and we take that responsibility very seriously. 

However, one thing I didn’t consider when we started this site is how responsible I would end up feeling for your safety while you are in Costa Rica. I genuinely want you to have the best trip here possible and that means that you should feel secure while traveling.

Crime in Costa Rica is an ever-evolving issue. In general, this is a very safe country. The most common crime is petty theft. Violent crimes targeting tourists such as armed robberies, sexual assault, or homicide are very very unusual. In general, you will likely meet wonderful people and have the vacation of a lifetime. 

However, because we feel responsible, here are all our tips about safety in Costa Rica. Please read through them and please contact us if you have any safety questions.

Our Perspective on Crime in Costa Rica

Thomas and I agree that in general, we feel secure in Costa Rica. 

We, fortunately, have never had any crimes committed against us in our several years of living here. 

That being said, we also use extreme caution and I sometimes feel it is exhausting to maintain our level of security. 

Although nothing has happened to us, that doesn’t mean that we haven’t heard of crimes being committed against friends. This has always been theft in various forms.

We have had friends leave things out visible in their car and their car has been broken into, a friend got robbed walking alone at night, a friend had their house broken into, and another friend was robbed in their driveway. 

Keep in mind that these incidents have been over about 8 years of living here. This is not an everyday occurrence.

But, yes, crime happens and it can be very scary. 

However, even if you are extremely cautious sometimes you just never know. We had a crime committed against us once in Europe in a very safe neighborhood. So, unfortunately, bad things can happen anywhere.

As of now, we still feel 100% secure in recommending that you visit Costa Rica.  It is a beautiful country and in general, the threat against tourists is low. 

If at any point we feel that the security level in this country is too unstable, we will update this to reflect that. 

​How the Costa Rican Government Protects Tourists

Tourism is the biggest industry in Costa Rica. With that in mind, the government works hard to make this the safest destination for tourists as possible. 

In recent years there has been an increase in homicides. This is largely due to drug trafficking and gangs. I have read a lot of articles about it in the news recently. It seems that the government is taking action to alleviate the situation. Although, it is hard to say exactly what is being done. 

Crime rates against tourists have remained somewhat steady. However, the president of Costa Rica along with the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) are making it their mission to lower these rates.

One way they are doing that is by identifying crime hot spots. They are now working to increase police presence in these areas. 

Sometimes I wonder if this is just talk to keep tourists coming here and feeling safe, but I really don’t think it is. 

I have noticed an increase in police presence in some areas and I have even been stopped by a police officer on the beach to tell me that there had been a few robberies there recently and to keep an eye on my stuff. 

How to Protect Yourself in Costa Rica

Here are all the safety tips I suggest doing to protect yourself while traveling in this foreign country. 

Pre-Trip Preparation

Here is what you need to do before you even leave home. 

Register With STEP

If you’re a United States citizen,  enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .

This program allows the US government to notify you regarding potential security threats in the area you are visiting, get in contact with you regarding  natural disasters , and give family and friends a way to contact you in the case of emergencies.

If you are from another country. see if your government offers a similar program. 

Check Embassy Warnings:

The US government has a whole  page dedicated to the safety in Costa Rica . 

Make sure to check it our before you travel so you can be aware of any areas to avoid or current crime situations.

Get Travel Insurance

Travel insurance  has multiple benefits. Not only will it help you out in case you get hurt, but it is also great if one of your belongings is stolen.

Give Travel Plan to Trusted Person

Inform a trusted person of your travel plans and keep them updated. I like to write out a document with all hotel info, any preplanned activities, flight info etc. for my mom.

I then update her on my license plate number if I have rented a car once I arrive in a destination.

I usually also try to check in once a day and just send her a quick message of my plans.

That way, if I go missing, somebody has a record of my intended movements. 

Travel Tip : If you are an iPhone user you can turn on “share your location” with a trusted family member or friend. That way, someone always knows exactly where you/ your phone is.

Rent Your Car Directly from a Company

Third party sites often have car rental deals that seem too good to be true…they are. These rates don’t include any added taxes, fees, or mandatory rental insurance. Check out our  guide to rental scams for more info .

Make a Photocopy of Your Passport

I suggest making one or two copies of your passport to bring with you while traveling.

Then, while in Costa Rica you can leave your passport in your hotel safe and only carry the paper copies with you. 

Get an eSIM Card

It is a good idea to always be able to stay connected and have a working cell phone.

We suggest getting an  eSIM card from Airalo  for this.

Purchase Security Products

This is not absolutely necessary, but there are a few products I really like for keeping me and my stuff safe while traveling. 

• Doorstop : Put this under your door at a hotel. When someone tries to open the door the alarm will sound.
• Money belt : Helpful for walking around towns so that your money, cards, etc are hidden. This one is also RFID blocking so nobody can scan your cards.
• Safety Alarm :  Carry on your keys. Presd the button to activate the alarm if you are attached.
• Headlamp : It gets dark very early here. If you plan to walk around at night it is a good idea to have a headlamp.

Monetary Theft

Here are some of the ways you can protect yourself from being scammed or robbed while in Costa Rica. 

Pay with Credit Card Instead of Debit Card

Credit cards make it easier to refute fraudulent charges than debit cards. I suggest checking your credit card account after any transactions to make sure that the amount is correct. 

Travel Tip: I t is a good idea to get a credit card that is made for travel so you will not pay a percentage on every transaction.

Keep Money in Several Locations

Don’t put all your money in your pocket or purse. It’s best not to carry much money at all, but if you have to, divide it up.

I put some in my shoe, some in my bra, and some in each of my pockets.

That way if I am robbed they hopefully won’t find all of the money and I can just give them my wallet and move on.

Only Change Currency at Banks

The currency exchange places at the airport will give you a very bad exchange rate. Don’t use them!

Also, there are often people exchanging currency on the Nicragua or Panama border. Don’t use them either.

Instead, you will get the best exchange rate directly at a bank. 

Check All Receipts

After any payment, check the receipt to make sure the amount adds up correctly. Often in Costa Rica store employees need to manually enter the total on a credit card machine.

It is so easy to accidentally (or purposely) add an extra “0” and overcharge a customer.

We’ve had it happen to us. Luckily, the employee noticed it when he charged us several hundred dollars instead of about $50 for gas.

He was so embarrassed and pointed out his mistake to us and fixed it.

So, just double-check. 

Personal Safety and Awareness

Here are all the things you should do to protect yourself.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

When you are traveling it’s easy to get distracted by all the beautiful new sights, but you need to also be aware of the people around you.

Look around often and avoid standing in large crowds.

If you feel uncomfortable in a situation or place, just leave.

If you take money out of the bank pay attention to who is around and watching you.

Dress Like You Belong

We get it, you are on vacation and probably want to wear all your nice warm weather clothing.

However, in Costa Rica it is best to blend in.

Leave the nice jewelry or flashy items at home and dress in a relaxed way.

Don’t Walk Around Alone at Night

Unfortunately, it  gets dark by 6pm  in Costa Rica year round. 

As I mentioned above, it is a good idea to have a headlamp if you plan to walk around after dark.

Also, it is best to never go out alone.

Trust Your Instincts

If you feel hesitant about a person or a location, trust yourself. Your gut instinct is usually right. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t Leave Your Stuff Unattended

If you plan to go to the beach it is never a good idea to leave your personal belongings unattended while you are in the ocean or taking a walk. 

​Keep Stuff Secure at Restaurants

A lot of restaurants in Costa Rica are open air. This means it is easy for anyone from outside to walk by your table and swipe something.

Don’t leave your cell phone, wallet, keys, etc just sitting on the table.

Also, don’t just put your purse or backpack on the back of your chair. I always put mine on the floor between my legs with one strap under my leg so it can not be taken. 

Know Your Hotel Location

If you get lost, your phone dies etc. it is good to know the place you are staying in your mother tongue and in Spanish.

In Costa Rica this is difficult because there are no addresses. It’s strange but true.

Instead, make sure you know the name of your hotel and any landmarks that are located nearby the place you are staying.

Keep Personal Info Private

People in Costa Rica generally really enjoy talking to tourists and they are usually extremely nice and welcoming.

However, to stay safe in Costa Rica you should still be cautious. Don’t reveal too much.

If you are a  solo traveler , NEVER tell anyone that you are by yourself. I always just say I’m with my husband and he is on his way to meet me.

I also never say which hotel I am staying in.

Lock Everything

When going out make sure you lock your car, hotel room etc.

Also, don’t leave anything of value in your rental car. It is not unheard of for windows to be smashed and things stolen.

When driving, lock your doors and use the AC instead of rolling down your windows.

We have heard stories of people getting robbed while waiting at traffic lights.

Because of this I always keep my purse on the floor between my feet while in the car.

Don’t Leave Your Drink Unattended

If I feel a bit sketched out by a place I always order bottled beer and keep my finger over the opening when I’m not drinking it.

Tell Someone Where You’ll Be 

In order to stay safe in Costa Rica, you should always tell someone where you’ll be when going out.

Even when traveling alone just send someone from home a quick message telling them where you are going that day.

Keep Your Room Secure

Try to get a room  not  on the first floor of a hotel (they are the most likely to be broken into).

I always put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on my door even when I’m not there, so it looks like someone is in the room.

Be Wary of Rental Car Issues

We have heard recently about  a travel scam  in which people are slashing tires at traffic lights and then conveniently pulling up when you pull off to the side of the road.

They will then rob you.

If you can, always drive to a gas station or another populated place before fixing your tire.

Only Use Registered Taxis

Make sure to only use official taxis while in Costa Rica so that you do not get scammed out of a lot of money.

You can tell an official taxi because it will be red (or orange if coming from the airport) with a yellow triangle on the drivers and passenger side door (or green triangle from the airport).

Be Cautious in Public Transportation

If you opt to take a public bus it is best to keep an eye on any belongings you put on the shelf above your seat.

Always make sure you keep your passport and valuables physically on you.

We have heard about people having their bags stolen while they were sleeping on public buses. 

Walk Facing the Traffic

If you walk facing traffic, motorcyclists will not be able to drive up behind you and grab your bag.

Walking facing traffic also means you will see any cars coming and are much less likely to get hit (and people drive like maniacs here sometimes).

Don’t leave Your Rental Car in a Remote Place

Sometimes cars are broken into when left in remote places.

At most public places there will be a guard watching cars. You can (usually) trust them to keep a good eye on your car.

However, we still strongly suggest that you never leave anything of value in your car and definitely don’t leave anything of value visible.

What to Do if a Crime Happens in Costa Rica

If someone robs you, let them. It’s better to have to cancel your credit cards and lose some money than to fight back and get attacked. It’s just not worth it.

If something happens to you and you need to call the local authorities just dial 9-1-1. There should be at least one person at the police station who speaks a little bit of English.

Also, it is best to contact your embassy as soon as possible. They can assist you in whatever you need as a citizen. Contacting the embassy is also important because it can help future travelers. Most embassies will then update their safety pages accordingly.

Dangerous Areas

Here are some areas that are sometimes considered unsafe. In general, the larger cities such as San Jose, Alajuela, Puntarenas, and Limon tend to have a higher crime rate. 

San Jose  is the capital city of Costa Rica. This is where we live and I feel mostly safe here during the day.

However, you need to stick to exploring the downtown area or reputable neighborhoods.

If you plan to stay downtown I suggest Barrio Escalante or the area near the stadium at La Sabana Park.

Petty theft during the day is very widespread here. It is a good idea to have a secure backpack and hide stuff in a money belt.

In downtown  Alajuela , you should use increased caution.

However, above the city in the beautiful rural areas you should feel very safe.

Tamarindo  is a popular destination for families, surfers, and backpackers. It is a larger town, so mostly due to its size there tends to be more crime.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa  is one of our favorite places in the country. It is a beautiful remote Pacific Coast surfing town.

However, because it is so remote it seems to be a hot spot for criminals to hide out in.

This doesn’t just mean Costa Rican criminals. I also mean shady people from around the world who have committed crimes tend to hide in this area.

For example, I just watched  this episode of 48 Hours  recently about a woman from the US who murdered another woman and was hiding out in Santa Teresa. 

Anyway, during the day you should be completely fine here, but use more caution at night. This especially applies to walking alone or if you plan to enjoy the nightlife scene. 

Panama Border on Osa Peninsula

This area is mostly safe for tourists. However, this is where a lot of drugs pass through from Panama into Costa Rica. So, use caution if in very remote areas.

Other Safety Concerns

It’s impossible not to fall in love with Costa Rica, but sometimes I feel like this country is slowly trying to kill me in a million ways.

From poisonous animals, earthquakes, erupting volcanoes, weird illnesses, a crazy high UV index, etc.

So, crime is not the only thing you need to think about in regards to safety here. A few other tips to stay secure from just this crazy tropical country as a whole are…

• Always Stay on Marked Trails : This will help keep you away from some potential wildlife threats like snakes. 
• Don’t Swim in Weird Bodies of Water : This should go without saying, but it is easy to get weird rashes and skin issues from unclean water. Check out our  guide to safety from environmental issues  for more info.
• Only Drink Bottled Water : In most towns, it is fine to  drink the tap water  here. However, because you are not used to the water it is best not to risk your vacation. Just buy bottled water so you don’t end up with stomach illnesses. I like to bring my refillable water bottle from home and buy several-gallon jugs while traveling. 
• Avoid Street Food : It is a good idea to be cautious of food safety so that you don’t get sick while visiting. The best way to do that is by only eating at reputable restaurants or cooking your own food. 
• Trust Your Instincts During Activities : If participating in day tour or activities with reputable companies you can generally expect a high standard of safety. However, if something feels unsafe to you, trust yourself. It is best not to risk your security. 
• Be Cautious of Flooding During the Rainy Season:  It is not unusual for there to be flash floods or road flooding.
• Be Aware of Natural Disasters : There are five active volcanoes in Costa Rica. That doesn’t mean that they are all actively erupting, but some are actually active at the moment. Earthquakes occur pretty much every day. Again, that doesn’t mean that you will actually feel them. Usually they are so minor that you won’t even notice. For more info,  check out our natural disaster guide . 
• Wear Bug Spray : The mosquitos here are generally not a problem during the day, but once the sun goes down they come out in full force.  Mosquitos here  can carry dengue, zika, and more. So, always load up on bug spray to avoid mosquito bites.
• Wear SPF 50+ Sunblock : One of your biggest concerns here needs to be the sun. Costa Rica is not THAT far from the equator.  The UV index is really high . Bad sunburns are often the number one medical issue that travelers face when visiting.

It’s Not All Bad

I know this post is a lot of doom and gloom. But, in reality, Costa Rica is an amazing travel destination filled with friendly people. In general, Costa Ricans are welcoming, kind, and peaceful. 

When we first moved here after living in Europe for four years we were so caught off guard. Several people that we had never met before went out of their way to help us find a place to live, help us buy furniture, gave us things, helped us adjust to the lifestyle etc. 

We turned down a lot of help because we felt like we would then owe them something. 

It took us a while to realize that no, people here are just very kind-hearted. The country operates a lot based on helping out your friends, family, and neighbors when you can with the mindset that someday they might need help and you can step in. 

Also, a lot of people work in tourism. They want to make sure that tourists feel welcome here.

Conclusion: Safety in Costa Rica

In conclusion, there are several things that can happen while traveling in Costa Rica, but with common sense and some caution, you should find that Costa Rica is a safe place.

Overall this is a peaceful country filled with beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and kind people.
