If you’re planning a trip to Spain, one of the key steps before booking your travel is to check the validity of your passport.

When you’re wondering whether you need 6 months on your passport to travel to Spain, this guide will take you through all you should know before you go.

Spain is located within Europe, and one of the main points to be aware of is that all countries have their own regulations when it comes to entry requirements. Thus there is no one-size-fits all rule when it comes to passport validity.

On a standard Canadian passport, the Canadian government advises that this should be valid for a minimum of three months after departure from Spain.

The Canadian government website also makes mention of those passports marked an ‘X’ gender identifier, as other countries may not recognize or accept this for entry or for transit.

This applies to all countries rather than Spain in particular. Citizens who are affected should thus contact an official Spanish representative to check before travel.

Anyone traveling from the UK to Spain on a ‘British Citizen’ passport must comply with the EU area regulations.

These state that your passport must be valid for a minimum of three months after the date you’ll depart from Spain, though six months is preferable.

A UK passport must be under 10 years old, in addition to having at least three months’ validity remaining when you depart.

Do check the start and expiry dates of your passport carefully, as when renewals have taken place early extra months may have been added.

Minimum passport validity: Duration of stay; 6 months recommended

Spain is a member of the European Union and thus different rules apply to citizens who hold an EU passport.

As these people can move freely between EU countries, they can live and work in Spain should they choose to.

In fact EU citizens should be allowed to travel, live and work in Spain freely, and thus should not be refused permission to enter.

To verify this right, however, you may be asked to show a valid passport. This may especially apply when traveling from outside the EU, even on an EU passport.

This also applies to anyone transiting via a Spanish airport.

The Australian government takes care to warn travelers that they may become stranded if their passport is not valid for long enough.

For this reason, they advise all travelers to check carefully before departing. If the passport will expire less than six months after departing from Spain, then applying for a new one is recommended.

How Long Before You Renew Your Passport?

The duration it takes before you can renew your passport will always vary from country to country. In the United Kingdom, for instance, when living in the country, you will need to have your passport renewed after every three weeks.

All citizens who currently don’t live in the UK must go to the nearest embassy to renew their passport, or rather be issued with new travel documents. Unless they do this, they won’t be able to leave the country.

The UK has put in place an online service that lets its citizens in foreign countries renew their passport online. If you are in the US, the passport renewal process will run for between four to six weeks, and everything can be done via email. If you go for the expedited option, you will incur an extra fee.

Another important thing to note is that when traveling from one Schengen country to another by car, you won’t be asked to show your national ID card or passport, you can just drive through and go where you want to. But airline and train operators will ask you to show your passport; this also happens when in a ferry company. They need your identification documents before you are allowed to cross to another country.

What Are the Testing Requirements?

At the time of writing this guide, all airline passengers flying from Spain to the US who are two years old and above must issue negative COVID-19 viral test results within three days of travel. Moreover, those traveling to the US must provide documentation issued by a licensed healthcare facility of having recovered from coronavirus within 90 days before travel. If you are traveling from the US, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you won’t be allowed into the country unless you meet strict requirements. Also, you can still get permission to enter Spain if you have permission from the government.

Also, if you are a US citizen traveling from your home country or a different one, you will have to show a negative PCR test that was taken within 72 hours before arriving in Spain. Besides that, you will have to fill up a Health Control Form before you are allowed in.

The COVID-19 related restrictions are set to remain effective throughout Spain, but they vary widely from region to region. Before you get to the country, you are supposed to know the restrictions based on the part you intend to visit.

If you are an EU national looking to stay in the country for more than 90 days, you will have to acquire a residence permit. Those who don’t come from the European Unions and are planning to stay for more than 90 days will have to apply for visas.

If you apply for a Schengen visa, you might have to wait for 15 days for the process to be complete. In some cases, it might take up to 45 days, but you should keep checking. Before you commence the application process, you are reminded to be aware of the national holidays in Spain since they will affect the processing period.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Spain.

Passport validity requirements

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

Your passport must be:

• issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Contact Spain’s embassy or consulates in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

Visa requirements

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training.

If travelling to Spain and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you need to meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements. Check with Spain’s embassy or consulates in the UK before you travel about what type of visa or work permit you may need.

If travelling to Spain for work , read the guidance on visas and permits.

If you cannot return to the UK before the expiry of your visa, permit or visa-free limit, contact the Spanish government’s national information service (In Spanish, English speaking operators are available). You can dial 060 from a Spanish phoneline.

If you are visiting Spain and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must apply to the immigration authorities (‘Extranjería’) (in Spanish).

If you stay in Spain with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Passport stamping

Check your passport is stamped as you enter or exit the Schengen area through Spain as a visitor.

Border guards check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If you do not have relevant entry or exit stamps in your passport, they will assume you have overstayed.

You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence includes boarding passes and tickets.

Use the desks staffed by border officers. If you are aged 18 or over, and airport staff instruct you to, you may be able to use e-gates where they are in operation.

If you use an e-gate, make sure you get your passport stamped by a border officer.

Additional documents required by tourists

If you enter the Schengen area as a tourist, you may need to provide additional documents at the border. As well as a valid return or onward ticket, when travelling to Spain you could be asked to show:

• you have enough money for your stay
• a hotel booking confirmation
• proof of address if visiting your own property (such as second home)
• an invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitation’ completed by your hosts.

Residents of Spain

If you are resident in Spain your passport should not be stamped when entering or leaving Spain.

Actively show your proof of residence, such as the foreigner’s identity card (‘la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ or ‘TIE’), when presenting your passport at Spanish border control. For further information, read about living in Spain .

Travel between Spain and Gibraltar

Spanish border checks can cause delays when crossing between Spain and Gibraltar. If you are travelling to Spain through Gibraltar, check the travel advice for entry requirements for Gibraltar .

There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. You should not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge.

Unaccompanied minors

Spanish law considers anyone under 18 to be a minor. If an unaccompanied minor comes to the attention of the Spanish authorities (particularly in connection with criminal incidents or when in hospital) they will be considered vulnerable and may be taken to a minors centre until a parent or guardian is found.

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food required for medical reasons. Passport Requirements to Visit Spain

In 2018 alone, over 82 million people visited Spain . Tourists come from around the globe to soak up the sun, explore historic cities, indulge in Spain’s varied and rich gastronomy and more. However, all foreign visitors who come to Spain must meet passport requirements and in many cases, visa requirements as well.

Citizens of many countries are able to visit Spain without a visa while others must obtain the Schengen visa for short-term stays of up to 90 days. As of 2025, nationals of over 50 countries will be required to obtain the ETIAS Program for Spain and all the countries in the Schengen Area. This electronic travel authorization will contribute to making the Schengen region safer . Applicants will need to meet the ETIAS requirements, which are: having a valid passport, a debit or credit card and an email address. An applicant’s passport will need to meet Spain’s passport minimum validity requirements.

How long should I have left on my passport before travelling to Spain?

When planning a trip, people are often more excited and concerned about discovering a new destination than they are about entry requirements . Sometimes, it’s easy to forget to check whether one’s passport is still valid. After all, passports are generally valid for periods of 5 to 10 years. Passport validity requirements will vary depending on a traveller’s country of citizenship.

When travelling to Spain for short-term stays , third-country nationals must hold a passport valid for three months beyond the length of stay . However, European Union passport holders just need their passport to be valid for the length of stay in Spain.

European Union citizens do not need a visa to travel to Spain, and in fact, it is also possible for these citizens to travel within the region with a valid ID card. All other foreign nationals must always have a valid passport when travelling to Spain.

In the US, the average passport renewal takes between 4 and 6 weeks and citizens can order it by mail. It is possible to choose an expedited option for an additional fee.

Whether discovering the capital in Madrid or relaxing on a sun lounger in the Balearics, Spain has long been a favourite holiday destination for Brits.

Before the pandemic, over 18 million Britons visited Spain each year. In 2017, the number of UK tourists flocking to the Iberian country hit a 10-year high of 18.81 million.

Spain was hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with the seventh-highest number of confirmed cases on the Continent.

Since Covid, the number of British holidaymakers has steadily climbed, from 4.3 million in 2021 to 15.1 million last year. With arrivals in 2023 likely to climb closer to – if not above – pre-Covid levels, potential visitors to Spain should be aware of any entry restrictions that the Spanish government has in place.

Can you travel to Spain unvaccinated?

Despite stringent rules in 2021 and throughout much of last year, Spain has lifted all Covid-related travel restrictions, according to the UK government website. This means you can enter the country even if you haven’t received a single dose of the vaccine. Spain does not require a negative PCR test result or proof of recovery.

The rules are the same for those transiting through Spain and entering through a land border.

Do you need a booster to travel to Spain?

While boosters were originally needed towards the end of the pandemic, the lifting of restrictions means that you do not require proof of a vaccine or a booster when entering Spain. There are also no specific requirements for children and young people.

What documents do I need to travel to Spain?

While Covid restrictions may have been removed, Brexit-related issues means there are several other important things to know before your trip abroad.

As alwasy, you need a passport to visit Spain, but the validity rules have changed post-Brexit. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date on which you are entering Spain, so check the ‘date of issue’ before travel.

In addition, your passport must be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave the EU. Check the expiry date before travel.

You can stay in Spain – and any other country within the Schengen Zone – without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. To stay longer, for example for work or study reasons, you need to meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements. Check with the Spanish Consulate in London .

When entering and exiting the Schengen Zone through Spain, make sure that your passport is stamped by border guards, as these stamps are used to keep track of the time you’ve spent in the country. Relevant evidence for proving when you entered and exited the country includes boarding passes or flight tickets.

Additional documents you may need for travel to Spain

Sometimes, visitors to Spain will need to provide other documents at the border. Most commonly, guards may ask you for your reasons for entering the country and how long you plan on staying (and if relevant, what your plans are for an onward journey). You may need to show a valid onward ticket or a return ticket.

You may also be asked to prove that you have enough money for your stay. The required amount is roughly €108 per person per day with a minimum of €900 in total. Anyone asked can use cash, cheques, traveller’s cheques or bank account statements as proof of funds.

The Spanish border force might also ask to see proof of the accommodation for your stay. This could be a confirmation of your hotel booking, or proof of address if visiting a property that belongs to you or a friend or relative.

Conditions for entry into Spain

Nationals of third States who travel to Spain for stays of up to 90 days (during any period of 180 days) for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, study, non-work internships or volunteer activities with a duration not exceeding 3 months, or for other non-gainful activities, must meet the entry conditions established in the Schengen Borders Code.

Entry requirements​​ 

• Enter via an authorised border-crossing point.
• Present proof of identity and a valid travel document.
• Present the corresponding visa if required, according to nationality.
• Provide evidence of meeting the conditions for the proposed stay and of possessing sufficient financial resources.
• Not be subject to a ban on entering Spain.  

Documents to present at the border​​  

1. Valid passport or travel document : The document must be valid until three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen territory, and must have been issued during the ten years immediately before the date of entry. 

2. Visa : For certain nationalities, a valid visa is required. This visa will not be necessary if the interested party has a valid residence permit or a valid long-term visa issued by a Schengen State. 

3. Documents accrediting the purpose and conditions of the planned stay : At the request of the competent authorities, the reasons and conditions of the planned stay must be accredited by documentary proof or other means. To this end, the presentation, among others, of the following documents may be required: 

• Return or tourist circuit ticket, in all cases. 
• For professional trips, the invitation from a company or authority to participate in a meeting, or documents that prove the existence of a relationship associated with professional activity, or access cards to a trade fair or congress. 
• For tourist or private visits, the confirmed reservation of an organized trip, or proof of accommodation, or letter of invitation from a private individual (such a letter only proves the availability of accommodation and does not release the traveller from the obligation to meet the other requirements for entry). The proof of accommodation may indicate whether it includes all or part of the traveller's living expenses. 
• For study trips, training programmes, non-work internships or volunteer work with a duration of less than three months, enrolment documentation or proof of admission to an educational establishment or internship contract or proof of admission to a volunteer programme.  
• For travel for other reasons, an invitation, reservation, programme or certificate of participation in related activities, entrance card/ticket, or receipt. 

Accreditation of financial means​​​  

At the request of the competent authorities, the traveller must present proof of having sufficient financial means for the proposed stay or of the ability to legally obtain such means. 

In 2020, the minimum amount required is 90 euros per person per day. In any case, and regardless of the length of stay, the traveller must have at least 810 euros or its equivalent in foreign currency. 

Economic means may be accredited by presenting cash, traveller's cheques, a credit card accompanied by a bank account statement, an up-to-date bank book, or any other resource that accredits the amount available, such as a credit statement regarding the card or bank account. Bank letters or online bank statements will not be accepted.

Entry authorization​​​  

Authorization to enter Spain may be granted to nationals of third States who have the necessary documentation, including, where appropriate, a visa, and sufficient financial means, and who are not subject to an entry ban and do not pose a danger to public order, the internal or external security of the State, or public health.

Denial of entry​ 

The competent authorities will deny entry to nationals of third States who do not meet the entry requirements or who are subject to an entry ban. Entry may also be denied if, in the previous 180 days, the traveller has exhausted the 90-day period for authorized stay in the Schengen area. 

The denial of entry will be notified by means of a reasoned decision, together with information on the procedure for appealing against this decision, in accordance with Spanish regulations. However, filing an appeal does not suspend the effects of the denial of entry.

Citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, and their family members​​ 

Citizens of the Member States of the European Union, and citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, may enter Spain with their national identity card or with a valid passport. Minors who travel with an identity document and are not accompanied by a parent will need the authorization of one of their parents. 

Family members who are not nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland may enter with a valid passport. Depending on their nationality, they may need an entry visa, unless they have a valid residence card as the relative of a European Union citizen.

Have you looked at your passport's expiration date recently? If you think you're in the clear for summer travel because you have six months or less remaining until your renewal date, think again.

Even those with less than eight months of validity remaining on their passports may already find it's too late for summer travel to many countries. This is because of the six-month validity rule that you'll find applies to most European countries in the Schengen Area — including France, Italy and Spain — which all require your passport to be valid for a minimum of six months after entry.

Europe isn't the only place you need to be careful: This six-month validity rule also applies to large portions of Africa, Asia and South America. Additionally, many other countries are even stricter and enforce three-month validity requirements for passports. This can further limit your travel options if your passport expiration date is looming.

Couple that with wait times for passport renewals — which range from two to three weeks for expedited service to six to eight weeks for regular processing — in the U.S. In the United Kingdom, wait times can last at least three weeks for regular processing, one week for expedited service or one day if you can travel to a passport office for the fast-track service. With wait times in mind, if you're not diligent, you can quickly find yourself traveling nowhere soon.

Don't despair, though. You can still travel internationally with just a month or two left on your passport before expiration. I learned this firsthand when researching vacation alternatives for my family. I had to cancel our spring break trip to Kenya (with a six-month passport validity requirement, plus a visa) after I discovered my son's five-year passport would expire a month after our planned trip.

Wondering where you should head instead? Here are all the options where passports need to only be valid at the time of entry or for the duration of your stay. Note, though, that you will still need a blank passport page for an entry stamp unless otherwise noted below.

The Bahamas and Bermuda

If you're looking for Caribbean surf and sun, these two countries will welcome you as long as your passport is valid at the time of entry. Extra bonus: Both Bermuda and the Bahamas are included in U.S. Customs and Border Protection's 15 international preclearance locations . The Bahamas also offers TSA PreCheck in Nassau , making your return to the U.S. almost as easy as a domestic trip.

Oh, Canada . Thank you for being a friend. The entire country — including summer favorites such as Victoria and Vancouver in the west and Francophile destinations like Montreal and Quebec, plus Toronto, in the east — only requires a passport to be valid at your entry date. Like Bermuda and the Bahamas, Canada also offers CBP's preclearance program at locations in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; Toronto; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal; Ottawa, Ontario; Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia; and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

United Kingdom

England turned out to be my family's spring break savior. London provided an easy getaway from the East Coast, and there was nonstop airfare available to book within a short time frame. If you choose this option, you can visit Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with the same passport as long as it's valid for the duration of your stay. (Note, though, that you can't combine a trip to the U.K. with European countries that have three- or six-month passport validity requirements.)

The Emerald Isle is another easy-to-reach country from the U.S. (and another spot my family has visited for a surprisingly sunny spring break in the past). Ireland only requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. Extra bonus: Customs preclearance is available at airports in Dublin and Shannon before you return home.

Another easy destination to reach from much of the U.S. is Mexico , and it doesn't require passports to be valid past the duration of your stay.

Long-haul travel is an option with a passport that has a short validity. Head directly to the Seychelles , a country comprising 115 sun-kissed islands off the eastern coast of southern Africa. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay (and plenty of sunscreen).

It's worth noting that there are several U.S. territories and commonwealth islands where you won't need a passport at all to visit, including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

This Is The Six-Month Passport Rule Every Traveller Needs To Know

Keep a keen eye on your passport's expiration date when you're booking your summer holidays this year – you may not be clear to travel, even if you have enough days left before expiration.

The scene is set for your holiday ; you’re packed—there’s enough sun cream in your case to fill a swimming pool—and ready to hit the beach. You’ve remembered your passport and it hasn’t expired yet. Only, that might not be quite enough to ensure you make it to your destination.

Just because your passport is within date, it doesn’t mean you will be eligible to fly to every country, as there are different rules depending on where you wish to go. You could have six months left before your renewal date, but it may not be enough to take you off on holiday. A number of countries require you to have at least three-to-six months on your passport at the time of travelling .

If it’s been a while since you sent off your last passport application , here’s all you need to know about the rules and regulations regarding travelling right up to the wire.

Am I allowed to travel with under six months left on my passport?

Well, the most accurate (if a little vague) answer is that it really all depends on where you’re hoping to go. While some locations will simply require you to travel with a passport that is in date, others may need you to have six months left.

If you want to take the safest approach, that’ll be to simply not allow your passport reach the six-month left mark, which would mean kicking off your renewal process around nine-months before it is due to expire.

You can, however, use online resources to determine whether you will be able to travel without the full six months, or three months on your passport, such as this tool created by GOV.UK that allows you to search a country and view its entry requirements , which includes passport expiration information.

Which countries require you to have six months on your passport before travelling?

According to the World Visa Guide , this rule was first introduced to stop travellers from ‘overstaying in a foreign country’, meaning countries began to enforce three-to-six months passport laws . You can view a full list of countries that impose these rules via their handy guide .

Remember, the time period that you need to have six months on your passport can also differ between countries. UK Abroad state: “The calculation of the 6-month passport validity requirement depends on the specific country you are travelling to.

“In some cases, the six-month period begins from the date you depart from that country, while in other cases, it begins from the date you arrive. It is important to check the entry requirements of the country you plan to visit to determine which method of calculation applies.”

The Schengen Area

Countries in the Schengen Area , which includes most EU countries, require you to have three months left on your passport from the day you intend to leave . These countries are:

• Czech Republic;
• Liechtenstein;
• Luxembourg;
• The Netherlands;
• Switzerland.

Remember, if you need to check whether your passport will be valid at another nation when you plan to go, you can confirm all the requirements via the GOV.UK website .

Foreign Office advice for Brits heading to Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Portugal

T he Foreign Office has issued updated travel advice for Brits planning holidays in Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Portugal. As many UK holidaymakers prepare to jet off to these popular European destinations in search of summer sun, it's crucial to be aware of the latest guidelines to ensure a smooth journey.

Regular updates from the Foreign Office provide essential information that tourists need to know before leaving the UK. This includes key advice on passport requirements.

When it comes to passport rules, the requirements are largely the same for Spain, France, Greece, Italy and Portugal, as reported by the Liverpool Echo . Before you can leave the UK, certain conditions must be met regarding your passport.

It's important to verify that your passport meets these requirements prior to travelling. If your passport was issued before October 1, 2018, additional months may have been added to its expiry date.

This advice is based on the UK government's understanding of the current rules for individuals travelling on a full 'British citizen' passport from the UK, for most common types of travel. The authorities in the country you are visiting are responsible for setting and enforcing entry rules.

If you're uncertain about whether these requirements apply to you, it's recommended to get in touch with the local embassy or consulates in the UK.

Do I need a visa?

Typically, you can travel to Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece without needing a visa. These countries are part of what's known as the Schengen area of the EU, which allows travel for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa.

This applies if you're travelling as a tourist, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training. The area encompasses 26 countries in total.

Do I need a vaccination?

Currently, there are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for those entering Italy. However, the advice for Spain, Portugal, France, and Greece states: "Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice."

If you are waiting for your passport to arrive, it should currently take  three weeks the Home Office Passport Office has warned .

How much time do you need left on your passport for Spain and France

With the Brexit transition period having ended on 31 December 2020, it is essential to understand how important passport validity is for travelling to the likes of France and Spain and other EU countries. Read on to find out what additional validity you may require on your passport.

Time left on your passport should be measured from when it was issued 

Do i need 6 months left on my adult or my child's passport to visit spain.

No - this is not the case, unless you are planning to use the full 90-day period you are permitted to stay in Spain as a non-resident. While many websites claim all people will need 6 months' validity on their British passport when travelling to Spain, official advice from the government states that you will need just 3 months' validity from the time you leave Spain to travel back to the UK or another country.

In addition, child passports should also have at least 3 months’ validity remaining from the date of leaving Spain. Extra months on an adult passport due to early renewal will not count, so some passport holders will need more than 3 months remaining to travel. The 3 months needed when leaving a country must be within 10 years of the passport issue date.

Some rules on passport validity can change at short notice - check  UK Government’s foreign travel website  for information before booking.

Do I need 6 months left on my adult or my child's passport to visit France?

No - you will most likely not need 6 months' left on your British passport when travelling to France - unless you are planning to stay there for more than the full 90-day period allowed for non-resident visitors.  Official advice on entry requirements to France from the government make it clear that you will require just 3 months' validity from the time you leave France to return to the UK or another country.

Both adult and child passports should have at least 3 months’ validity remaining from the date of leaving Spain travel. Extra months on an adult passport due to early renewal will not count, so some passport holders will need more than 3 months remaining to travel. The 3 months needed when leaving a country must be within 10 years of the passport issue date. It is estimated that about five million UK citizens hold passports that are valid for less than 12 months, meaning they should consider renewing now if they plan to travel in the new year.  Some rules on passport validity can change at short notice - check  UK Government’s foreign travel website  for information before booking.

easyJet drops the requirement for 6 months' validity left on passports - and what other airlines say...

• It must be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to depart from the EU or above countries*
• It must be no more than 10 years old on the date of travel to the EU or above countries.
•  is valid for at least three months from the date they will leave the Schengen member country, unless the person has a Schengen-issued residence permit or long-term visa.
• UK passport should not be older than 10 years.

Ryanair's latest policy on passport validity can be found here . Check your airline's validity requirement before you travel. While requirements from some airlines appear to contradict what the UK Gov.UK website says, travellers are advised to adhere to the requirements stipulated by their airline or face the possibility of being barred from flights - as the carrier has the final say on who boards.  Contact your airline in advance if you have fewer than six months left on your licence and ask them to advise you in writing before you consider renewing your (or a child's passport) as the processing delays could also leave you grounded.  British Airways ' website says 'follow government advice' for passport validity. So three months - with issue date caveat applied - should mean three months from the time you leave the destination for many countries.  Jet2 has clear information on the post-Brexit passport validity you should adhere to when flying with the airline to the likes of France and Spain. The information on the airline's website sets out the following information about document validity:

• Most EU countries now require UK passports to be less than ten years old and still be valid for at least three months at the time you're due to leave their country.
• Visit the Gov.uk website for detailed, up-to-date information on passport validity.

The same advice, as above, applies to a child's passport. Make sure they have at least 3 months' validity.

Will extra months be added to your passport - because of early renewal - count towards the required validity?

If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to the expiry date. These extra months on your 10-year passport will not count towards the 3-month rule –- meaning you are likely to need more than 3 months of validity. No! You will not need to have 6 months' validity left on your passport when travelling across the Irish Sea to the Republic of Ireland after December 31, 2020. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, however.

As part of Spain, Tenerife is within the EU and the Schengen area. The entry requirements differ, depending on whether you are travelling to Tenerife from another Schengen member state, an EU country that is not part of the Schengen area, or a third country.

Health Controls

Covid health controls for arrivals from EU- or Schengen -countries were lifted in June 2022. Covid health controls for passengers arriving from third countries were discontinued from 21/10/2022. Arrivals from China were temporarily subject to health controls but this is no longer the case. For more information, please see our Covid page .

Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Non-EU / Non-Schengen countries

Since the end of the Brexit transition period on 31/12/2020, this includes the UK .

You will  need a passport  to be able to travel to Tenerife. It is important to check the  age and expiry date  to ensure that it is valid for travel. Your passport has to meet two criteria :

• Valid for 3 months  or more after the day you leave Tenerife. Please check the  expiry date  of your passport. AND
• Less than 10 years old  when you travel to Tenerife. This is calculated from the  date of issue .

Please note : If your passport was renewed early, some additional months may have been added to its expiry date. Your passport may therefore still be valid for 3 months on the day of your return from Tenerife, but may already be more than 10 years old from the date of issue. Please check  in good time before you travel  that your passport fulfils  both criteria . The above information is based on the advice from the European Union website . Some airlines are currently requesting passport validity of 6 months or more at the time of travel, so please double-check your airline’s requirements.

Tourists on short trips

The visa requirements for Tenerife will vary, depending on your nationality . Citizens of many countries do not currently require a visa if they visit Tenerife as a  tourist for short trips . These countries include

• The United Kingdom
• The United States
• New Zealand
• amongst many others

Please see the European Union website for a full list of countries whose nationals are exempt from the visa requirement.

If you are travelling to Tenerife from one of the above-mentioned countries, the following rules apply:

• You can stay up to  90 days  in any  180-day period .
• However, if you are also visiting other EU countries, you will need to check that you do not spend more than  90 days in total across all the countries you visit, in any given 180-day period.

Business travel and longer stays

Different rules apply for business travel and longer stays. If you do require a visa, you will need to apply for this at the Spanish embassy in your country of residence prior to travelling to Tenerife.

Additional requirements

If you are visiting Tenerife as a tourist from a non-EU / non-Schengen country, you may also be asked to provide proof of the following:

• a return ticket
• the address of your accommodation in Tenerife
• sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Tenerife (currently, this equals € 100 per day)

New procedures announced

Please note, that these procedures are not yet operational .

There are changes ahead for nationals from non-Schengen /non-EU countries when visiting Spain (and/or other European countries). These were intended to be launched in 2023 but have already been postponed several times. According to the latest information, they are now due to become operational in mid-2025 .

ETIAS – Travel Authorisation

Nationals from non-EU/non-Schengen countries will soon be required to apply for travel authorisation ahead of their journey to Tenerife. This new scheme is called ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. A valid ETIAS authorisation will enable the person to visit Spain (and/or other European countries) as a tourist for short stays (please see above).

Once operational, an ETIAS travel authorisation can be obtained via the official website for a fee of € 7 and will be valid for 3 years . When applying for ETIAS travel authorisation, you will need to provide some  personal information , e.g. your name, address, passport details and current occupation. You will also be asked questions about criminal convictions, past travel to conflict zones, and you will need to  outline your travel plans  during your stay in Europe.

EES (short for Entry/Exit system) is an IT system that will be used at passport control for passengers from non-EU, non-Schengen countries. The EES will automate border control procedures and replace passport stamping. This will speed up the process and increase the accuracy of the checks that are being carried out.

Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Non-Schengen EU countries

A valid passport or national identity card is required for entry.

Due to the freedom of movement agreement within the EU, a visa is not required.

This currently applies to the following countries

Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania

Please note

From the end of March 2024 , Romania and Bulgaria will join Europe’s Schengen border-free zone for air travel . This means that there will be no more inspections for travellers arriving at Tenerife Airport from Bulgaria and Romania from 31/3/2024.

Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Schengen EU countries

Passport / id card.

EU citizens who are travelling within the Schengen area are not usually required to show a passport or national identity card for travel. However, you will still need to bring one of these documents with you, as foreigners who are on Spanish territory are obligated to carry valid proof of identity with them.

Due to the freedom of movement agreement within the EU, no visa is required.

Brits heading on summer holidays are already being urged to check their passports are still valid, but if you're planning a trip to Europe, then you'll need to pay closer attention to the dates on your passport.

A number of holidaymakers have been caught out by post Brexit rules , which now mean both your passport's issue and expiry dates will come into play at border control.

The confusing rules have led to the Foreign Office updating its advice for 33 countries - and that includes Spain, a popular holiday hotspot for UK travellers.

Under the new passport requirements, your passport needs to be no more than 10 years old from the point of issue; but it also needs to be valid at least three months after your date of travel.

The updated Foreign Office advice for Spain now addresses passport rules specifically and explains: "If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements.

"Your passport must be:

• issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

"You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

"Contact the embassy of the country you are visiting if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to."

Your passport's validity won't be the only documents you need to enter Spain for holidays.

The country is keeping its Covid entry rules in place until at least mid June. This means that you'll need to be fully vaccinated or have proof of recovery from Covid in the last six months if you want to visit Spain, the Balearics or Canaries for tourism.

If you're unvaccinated, you won't be able to enter for holidays.

However, there is an exception; unvaccinated children aged 12-17 will be allowed to visit for holidays provided they have a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before travel, or proof of Covid recovery.

Travel requirements and entry rules are correct at the time of writing but are subject to changing quickly due to the nature of the pandemic. Always check the Foreign Office's latest Spain travel advice before booking or going on a holiday - this also covers holidays to the Canaries and the Balearics.

Has anyone travelled to the EU since Brexit (this year), on a UK passport with less than 6 months on it? Was it all fine?

"Passport validity

Check your passport is valid for travel before you book your trip, and renew your passport if you do not have enough time left on it.

Make sure your passport is:

valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Spain, or any other Schengen country

less than 10 years old

The 3 months you need when leaving a country must be within 10 years of the passport issue date.

If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the minimum 3 months needed"

UK Government web sites have consistently got this wrong, and only some have been corrected. The current correct information is in reply #1.

my passport expires on 10th Oct 22 - does this mean that I have to return to the uk before 10th July 22. I understand about 3 months being left on the passport to travel out but do you need the full 3 months in date to return?

One of the world's leading economic authorities has warned the UK that borrowing should remain expensive until the rate of price rises eases further and stays there.

Interest rates, which are at a  post-2008-era high of 5.25% , should stay there, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"The fiscal and monetary policy mix is adequately restrictive and should remain so until inflation returns durably to target," the OECD's economic outlook for 2024 said.

It's an endorsement for the approach of the  Bank of England  whose statements on inflation have not indicated an imminent rate cut.

We asked Joanna Grewer, partner at Roythornes Solicitors, to respond: "If you have accounts in joint names then the account can be accessed by the person who has capacity. 

"However, this won't entitle the capacitous person to deal with any of the income which comes into that account for the non- capacitous person, such as pensions, or to manage any outgoings in that person's name. 

"If both parties lost capacity, then there would be no access to funds at all."

Another cent has come off oil costs over the past 24 hours - hopefully signalling better news for drivers ahead.

A barrel of Brent crude is currently costing just over $84 and had been trading at $83 in Asian trading.

It had stood above $90 a month ago as the crisis in the Middle East played out.

Evidence of a cooling in tensions between Israel and Iran have assisted the downwards trend.

The FTSE 100 began the day by erasing the losses seen on Wednesday.

A solid set of results for Shell helped the index climb by 0.3% in early deals...

Shell shares were more than 1% higher on the back of better than expected profits.

It revealed further shareholder awards in the form of a dividend and share buyback.

Online gamblers who lose £500 a month or more will face financial vulnerability checks.

Checks will come into force from 30 August.

The figure will reduce to £150 a month from 28 February next year.

The Gambling Commission said this would help identify acutely financially vulnerable online customers, such as those subject to bankruptcy orders or with a history of unpaid debts.

The checks will only use publicly available data and will not  require gambling operators to consider an individual's personal details such as postcode or job title.

As well as light touch checks, the commission said a pilot of enhanced assessments would go ahead, aimed at preventing cases where customers are able to spend large amounts in a short time without any checks, resulting in significant gambling harm.

It's not uncommon to feel uncomfortable with flying - but we'd probably all feel a bit better if we were sitting in first class, wouldn't we? 

The lucky few might be able to pay for themselves, but for the rest of us, frequent flyer experts Flight Hacks have shared their top tips to get a free upgrade (and you can let us know your tips for getting upgrades in the comments box above)...

Stay loyal to one airline

Many airlines have a rewards scheme that offers free upgrades, early check-in and even free flights to loyal customers. 

One research survey found 80% of staff said a customer in the airline's frequent flier scheme would be more likely to receive a free upgrade.

Plus, getting early check-in could place you first in line to secure a seat in the plane's front section.

Travel alone or during quieter times

Let's face it, a single person on an empty flight is much more likely to get an upgrade than a family of six on a booked-out plane. 

Try flying in the middle of the week or at off-peak times to get a quieter plane. 

Dress to impress 

If you're dressed smartly and look like a frequent flier, this can boost your chances of getting an upgrade. 

Business travellers are an airline's favourite type of passenger as they fly regularly and are more likely to spend freely on their company cards - so it could be worth dressing in business attire. 

Don't be afraid to ask

It doesn't hurt just to enquire, as long as you're polite. 

Be flexible

Airlines will frequently overbook flights to compensate for no-shows and ensure the planes are full. 

If there aren't enough seats after everyone checks in, they will often offer incentives to passengers willing to switch to a later flight.

This can mean seat upgrades or cash incentives. 

Take advantage of special occasions

If it's your birthday, honeymoon or a special anniversary, it could be worth casually dropping this into conversation with the check-in staff. 

Be polite when checking in

Perhaps all of these tips should be caveated with the need to remain polite. 

As there is often no strict criteria on how airline staff may choose to give out free upgrades, the number one tip is to be nice. 

Travel expert Immanuel Debeer, from Flight Hacks, says "being respectful and friendly is by far the best way to increase your chances of an upgrade". 

"There are plenty of simple tricks to increase your chances of getting an upgrade, but the most important thing to remember is that airline staff are human."

New ISA rules were introduced from 6 April that should make opening and funding ISAs simpler. But what many people may not realise is that ISA providers do not need to implement most of the new rules – and many haven't yet, or may have no intention of doing so.

As a result, savers have been left scratching their heads, unsure if their ISA provider will allow them to make use of the rules or not.

What are the key new rules?

Harmonise ISAs to those over 18:  This is not an optional change. The minimum opening age for adult cash ISAs is now 18, so not good news for those aged 16 and 17 who previously could have funded a junior ISA and an adult cash ISA.

Allowing multiple ISA subscriptions:  People should now be allowed to open and pay into multiple ISAs of the same type in a single tax year. Previously people could only pay into one of each type of ISA every tax year, unless their ISA provider offered what we called "portfolio ISAs". 

A portfolio ISA (other names for this have been used such as "ISA wallet" with Paragon Bank) allows savers to open more than one cash ISA with the same provider in the same tax year - but only a small number of providers offer it, such as Paragon, Aldermore and Charter Savings Bank, Nationwide and Ford Money.

With the new rules, savers assume they can open more than one ISA with either more than one provider or with the same provider. However, our research has shown that while many providers will allow you to open another cash ISA with them if you have already opened and funded an ISA with someone else in the current tax year, this doesn't mean they have adopted the portfolio ISA rule – so you may not be able to open two ISAs with them.

Partial transfers allowed:  Partial transfers of ISA funds for the current tax year should be allowed, rather than being forced to transfer the whole amount of your current tax year ISA. Previously you could only make a partial transfer of old ISAs; you'd have to transfer the current tax year's ISA entirely. 

Once again not many have adopted this rule yet.

The bottom line

So, while in theory these new changes should have made ISAs more flexible, in reality they have added an extra complication for savers and the bottom line is that you need to ask your existing and potential ISA providers about which of the rules they have adopted or are looking to adopt.

The pet supply retailer has opened two convenience stores in a move to branch out from its typical retail park sites. 

The stores, which are in Sutton, south London, and Whetstone, north London, will sell a range of pet owner essentials and offer an advice counter. 

They are much smaller than the usual Pets at Home stores and will not have the typical vet and grooming services. 

Speaking to Retail Week, the chain did not confirm whether it would be opening more high street stores in the future. 

Pets at Home Sutton store manager Rachel Etherington told the news outlet the location would "allows us to provide pet owners with convenient access to all their pet care essentials, as well as expert advice from our specially trained colleagues, right on their doorstep". 

The Fed has issued its latest policy statement, announcing it will keep interest rates at the same level. 

It did note inflation has eased over the past year, and it is still leaning towards eventual reductions in borrowing costs. 

However, it pointed to recent disappointing inflation readings, suggesting moves towards more balance in the economy had stalled. 

If you're wondering why we're telling you this, it's because there is a link between the Fed's interest rate and the Bank of England's base rate. 

The interplay between the two can affect the value of the pound and currency alternatives such a gold.

Market expectations for the UK base rate are often heavily influenced by what's going on in the US. 

Untreated sewage was released into designated shellfish waters for 192,000 hours last year, new research has found.

The hours of sewage dumping were spread across 23,000 separate incidents.

Some fishing waters in Cornwall were forced to close last year after high levels of e.coli were found in oysters and mussels, and norovirus can also be transported via human waste.

Shares in luxury carmaker Aston Martin have plummeted as much as 14% today after it announced bigger than expected losses. 

Aston Martin revealed adjusted pre-tax losses of £111m for the first three months of the year, compared with £57m a year earlier. 

Analysts had expected a loss of £93m. 

The losses were due to higher finance costs and the timings of its car launches.

B&Q is introducing plastic plant pot recycling stations at more than 100 of its stores across the UK. 

Customers will be able to drop off their unwanted pots in store so they can be recycled and turned into new planters. 

B&Q's 100% recycled plastic Blacksmith Planters will be available in stores for £4.
