A Must-Do Kayak Tour in Auckland – Sunset Stunner

By Author Sarah Chant

Posted on Last updated: August 12, 2022

Categories Things to Do

Just a stone’s throw from the busiest CBD in New Zealand, you might be surprised to find an incredible opportunity to take to the water.  Sunset kayaking to Browns Island ticks all of your outdoor-loving adventure boxes. Without a doubt, kayaking Auckland’s harbour should be a challenge that everyone takes on – travellers and locals alike.

A Kayaking Adventure in Auckland – Everything You Need to Know About Sunset Kayaking to Browns Island

A favourite amongst those in the know, Browns Island (also known as Motukorea) is only accessibly by private craft.  Fortunately, we know exactly how to get you there; on a sunset kayak tour (which includes a BBQ dinner – yes!)

Located to the south of Rangitoto Island and Motutapu Island and not far from Waiheke , Browns Island provides gorgeous views back toward the city.  Best of all, because you’ll be the only ones there, it will be impossible to do anything but relax and enjoy the stunning scenery that New Zealand is so well known for.

What Makes Browns Island Motukorea Special?

A small island in the Hauraki Gulf, Motukorea (which means ‘oystercatcher island’ in Māori) is one of the best-preserved volcanoes in Auckland’s volcanic field .

The island itself is of archaeological importance, having been home to many Māori people before pākehā settlement.  With three pā sites identified, and moa bones and fishhooks having been found on the island, it is clear that Motukorea was a hive of activity in years gone by.

Now, though signs of the fortified pā sites are still visible, the most obvious sights on and around the island are natural ones; incredible views, flowing grass and seabirds are in ready supply.

Not only is Browns Island rugged and gorgeous but it also provides a home to countless endemic species, including the dotterel and oystercatcher .  If you’re especially lucky, you might even come across dolphins or orcas as you make your way on over!

A lot of hard work has been done over the years to rid the islands of the Hauraki Gulf of introduced pests, and visitors now reap the benefits.

Can you think of a better place to go sunset kayaking right in the middle of Auckland?

What to Expect Whilst Sunset Kayaking to Browns Island – Kayaking Auckland

Upon arriving at the St Heliers Beach boat ramp, you’ll meet the others in your group and get kitted up ready for your adventure.  The Auckland Sea Kayak crew will come equipped with practically everything you need for an evening out on the water but we suggest you also pack/wear the following items.

Gear List For Your Sunset Kayak

  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely (try to avoid cotton where possible, as it will be cold when wet)
  • A jumper/hoodie for the island
  • A drink bottle of water
  • A camera and/or GoPro
  • Socks and comfortable walking shoes (to change into on the island)
  • Optional: A dry bag (they are supplied)

Once you’re kitted out (with spray jackets, life vests etc), you’ll break into groups, meet your guide for the evening and will undergo some basic kayak training.  Whether you’ve kayaked before or have never been on the water, this quick session will ensure that everyone on the water has the same basic understanding of how to kayak – they’ll even teach you some handy tips and tricks.

Taking to the water, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the Hauraki Gulf as you paddle your way alongside the mainland, first to Ladies and Gentleman’s Bay and then towards Browns Island.  All the while, your guide will share information about the local area with you.

auckland kayak tours

Chatting away to your fellow travellers, you’ll paddle yourself ever closer to Browns Island, a spot that even locals very rarely get to see.

Once ashore, your group will set sights on the summit of Motukorea, weaving your way through the tall grass and up the volcano.  The hike itself is very manageable, though we don’t guarantee you won’t find yourself a little out of breath (I did).  Without a doubt, the views are worth the effort to get to the top!

Once there, you’ll sit back, relax and enjoy watching the sun slowly slip closer to the horizon.  All the while, you’ll hear about Auckland geology and geography – honestly, even as locals, we were blown away by the level of knowledge that our guides had (with the odd funny, but well-intentioned, Māori mispronunciation from our English guide thrown in)!

auckland kayak tours

After a leisurely stroll back down (with plenty of photo stops), it’ll be time to get the barbie cranking!

The team at Auckland Sea Kayaks include tea/coffee/water (along with delicious homemade brownies) before guests depart on their hike but it’s the freshly prepared and cooked BBQ dinner that refuels energy stores before beginning the paddle home.

With plenty of options for both meat-eaters and vegetarians, dinner is a social affair on the beach whilst everyone enjoys the incredible sunset back over the city.

Seriously, is there a better way to spend an evening?

auckland kayak tours

If you thought the paddle over to Browns Island was peaceful, wait until you find yourself paddling in the last of the twilight hours.

After a relaxing sunset dinner, served à la carte on the beach, you’ll gear up again and point your kayak back towards the mainland.

With lights on your kayaks, paddling as the day shifts to night is a surreal experience and one that you won’t likely experience anywhere else.  It felt completely safe but also like we were off on a real adventure!

After some hard mahi , we dragged our tired bodies (and kayaks) back ashore where we first set off, celebrating our achievement.  When we first started paddling in fairly choppy seas, I half-jokingly exclaimed that I wasn’t entirely sure I’d make it there and back, so in my eyes, the celebration was well-deserved!

Do I Need to Know How to Kayak to Join This Excursion? I Want To Go Sunset Kayaking!

There is no need for prior kayaking experience (though of course it won’t hurt).

As a guest, you will be taught all of the skills you need to hit the water, both in regards to kayaking technique and boat control.

Everyone kayaks in a double kayak, so it’s very possible that you’ll be buddied up with someone with more experience anyway.

How Fit do I Need to be to Kayak in the Open Ocean?

The fitter you are, the easier you will find the kayak and hike.

With that said, I am not particularly fit (truth be told, I’m not fit at all, I’m just determined to give things a good crack) and I handled the evening out just fine.

Both of us expected to wake up the next morning, aching all over, but it never happened!

If you are able bodied and have a good attitude, you’ll be just fine to take to the ocean.

Kayaking Auckland: What is Being Done to Ensure Browns Island Remains Pest-Free?

The Department of Conservation has teamed up with the Auckland Council to ensure that the many islands of the Hauraki Gulf remain pest-free, both now and in the future.

Invasive plants and animals can easily find their way over to these islands, causing significant harm to the natural ecosystems.  You might be surprised to learn that mice can squeeze through gaps as small as 7mm, whilst insects can be transported in bags and seeds and weeds can easily be carried on the soles of your shoes.

In a bid to protect our native flora and fauna , it’s important to maintain the pest-free status of these islands.

auckland kayak tours

If visiting Browns Island, you’ll have an important role to play in this regard.  Following DOC instructions is simple; simply ensure you’ve completed each of the following steps before venturing over on your kayak trip.

Check  – your gear for pests such as rodents and insects Clean  – footwear and gear, removing soil and seeds Seal  – ensure your gear is zipped up (no open bags)

For further information, you may like to check out the information provided by the Department of Conversation .

Together, we can all do our part to keep New Zealand clean, green and healthy for everyone.

Auckland is a busy, thriving city, so the ability to escape the hustle and bustle with such ease is a huge bonus – that’s exactly what a sunset kayak to Browns Island offers.

Whether you’re living in Auckland or paying the city a visit as you pass on through, we would encourage you to add a sea kayak trip to your agenda.  With awesome guides, unbeatable scenery, a good dose of exercise, yummy food and best of all, access to a spot that you’ll have to yourself, it’s a memorable way to spend an evening.

Gear up and get ready to enjoy the harbour up close; this is sunset kayaking done right!

Thank you to Auckland Sea Kayaks for hosting Nathan and I for the purpose of this review.  As always, all thoughts are our own.

We were initially due to kayak to Rangitoto Island but due to high winds, the decision was made to travel to Browns Island for sunset instead.  We will be back to take on Rangitoto another day!

Enjoy a most wonderful two-hour tour with friends or family or come along yourself, our friendly guides will make you feel comfortable and ensure you have a magical evening out on the water.

As Seen on TV!

Check out the coverage on TVNZ

This adventure was amazing. Our guides were amazing! We had the pleasures of experiencing two different types of bio plankton, one of which most of our guides hadn’t been able to experience themselves. The vibe was great for our group of 12 too. You will get wet, it’s not a bad thing, just you’re on the ocean with waves (and you have to get the kayak into the shallows of the beach), so plan accordingly for clothing and/or bring a change of clothes! Our guides made sure everyone was comfortable and able to be successful when kayaking too, even for beginners but it is a work out, so be prepared to work a little to get out of the bay (small waves/wind). 10000% this was amazing, we would do it again in an instant. Double perk for our adventure was star gazing, seeing all the starts over the ocean was fantastic too.

What in the world is bioluminescence?

There are SIX distinct bioluminescence we look for. 1. “Big Blue”. This is where the surface of the water lights up with amazing blue Plankton. 2. “Galaxy” is seen when you move your hand or paddle just under the surface. The water lights up with tiny bioluminescent stars. It looks like a whole new galaxy underwater. 3. “Iceberg” is a Zoo Plankton called salps. We believe it has eaten so much Phytoplankton that it glows continuously as it floats past you. 4. “Magical Fish”. These small fish are about 10mm to 15mm. They are thought to be eating so much Phytoplankton that they continuously glow. They swim around leaving a super fine trail of bioluminescence. Sometimes, you can even pick them up in your cupped hand, just extraordinary! 5. “Fairy Dust”. An incredibly soft dusting of fine bioluminescence over the surface. 6. “Reef Sparkle”. Described as seeing underwater city lights. This type is found just under the surface of the water around reefs we pass by on tour. • Watch the sunset slip below the horizon and enjoy an exhilarating night paddle. • Be one of the few to see this natural phenomenon. • We have a 95+ percent chance of seeing at least one of these types of Bioluminescence on every trip however, Iceberg and Magical Fish are very rare (5%). On some extraordinary nights you may be lucky enough to see all of these.

How does bioluminescence occur?

Bioluminescence occurs through a chemical reaction that produces light energy within an organism’s body. For a reaction to occur, a species must contain luciferin, a molecule that when it reacts with oxygen, produces light. In the ocean, bioluminescence is not as rare as you may think. Bioluminescence is found in many marine organisms: bacteria, plankton, algae, jellyfish, worms, crustaceans, sea stars, fish, and sharks to name just a few. In fish alone, there are about 1,500 known species that luminesce.

Bioluminescent organisms live throughout the world’s oceans, from the surface to the depths of the seafloor, from near the coast to the open ocean. In the depths of the sea, bioluminescence is extremely common, and because the deep sea is so vast, bioluminescence may be the most common form of communication on the planet!

When does bioluminescence occur?

The warmer the weather and the water, the better the bioluminescence! The Peak season for bioluminescence in Auckland is October-April.

Sunset Tour to Rangitoto Island

“Kayaking at night feels daringly intrepid – as if we’re secret agents on a covert mission. For the next hour we paddle towards the city;s twinkling lights under a sky pinpricked with stars. It’s my favorite part of the trip. The only sound is the rhythmic splash of the paddles in the water. No one speaks, not even my sister.”

Rob McFarland in Rough Guide to New Zealand

“A delightful guide Logan who made us feel welcome, safe and informed and timed our activities impeccably so that we caught sunset at the top, and moon-rise on the harbour. He also kindly dropped us back at our hotels in Auckland at the end of the tour, appreciated by solo female travelers.”

Fay on TripAdvisor

“My boyfriend and I did the sunset kayak tour to Rangitoto island a few days ago – one of the BEST decisions we’ve made on our NZ trip! Our tour leader Eric was a knockout! He was warm and friendly from the start, and made us feel safe the whole way across to Rangitoto and up to the summit, providing knowledgeable commentary all the way. we saw the most beautiful sunset over Auckland city and the harbour. Once we were back down at the dock Eric cooked us up a lovely dinner that had us almost too full to kayak back to the city. as someone who has kayaked maybe once or twice in her life, i’d say this venture was a decent challenge for me, especially in the middle of the New Zealand winter. So be prepared to work for your lovely sunset views – but be very assured that they are worth it!”

Auckland bioluminescence

Duration: 2 hrs

Experience Bioluminescent Night Cruising. Be one of the few to see this natural phenomenon known as 'Sea Sparkle' or 'Marine Aurora'. This bioluminescence kayak tour in Auckland is an inspiring night paddle.

What are the types of bioluminescence we see?

Dinoflagellate: This is surface bioluminescence we see the most. Dinoflagellates are diverse single-celled organisms with two flagellas (organelles for bacterial locomotion). 'Dino-Bio' serves a vital role in ecosystems, totaling around 2,293 species.

Salps: Probably the coolest one. Also called "sea grape," is a barrel-shaped planktonic tunicate that moves by contracting its jelly-like body to pump sea water through. Salps feed on phytoplankton by straining and filtering sea water internally and as a result glows itself and showcases an efficient jet propulsion trail of bioluminescence!

Chaetognatha Arrow worms, or chaetognaths, are predatory marine worms found globally in plankton (133 species), with some attaching to algae and rocks (this is where we see the rocks and reefs bioluminescencing).

Larvacean: Larvaceans, also known as appendicularians, are small (2-8mm), transparent, tadpole-shaped tunicates found primarily in the photic zone (top ocean layer).

When is the best time to see bioluminescence?

The best time to see bioluminescence is during warmer weather & water! Peak Auckland bioluminescence season is October-April. Tours are first-come-first-serve, so don’t wait!

The bioluminescence is influenced by the moon as it produces light, thereby complicating the observation process. During the full moon and when the moon has 'risen' above the horizon line into the skies, it is less ideal. BUT DON'T WORRY; all of SNM's dates have either NO moon rises or full moons!

At night auckland bioluminescence waters come alive in bright glowing hues

The water is often extremely clear giving great views of what is going past under your kayak. Auckland Bioluminescence Night Cruising allows you to experience the magical light show by the smallest of living sea creatures.

Auckland Bioluminescence Kayak Tour Overview

This incredible Auckland bioluminescence tour is peaceful and breathtaking, all at the same time. We don't let the day end when the sun goes down.

At sunset, we gather for a welcome and our experienced guides give a briefing of the bioluminescence tour. They will equip everyone with suitable life jackets and lead the way to the launch area for the kayaks. They provide help entering the kayaks and giving instructions to those that do not have kayaking experience. Everyone gets to do the tour in their own kayak or a tandem kayak.

It's like going on a cozy family tour. You stop along the way, where we explain more about the magical glowing water and the marine life in the bay.

We have grown up seeing millions of stars light up the night sky, beautiful, far away and untouchable. Paddling around in a kayak you are virtually floating in the bioluminescence, you trigger the marine light-show with your actions. From the kayak, you can reach into the water and let your hand light up and give the appearance of an Avatar-like character.

Enjoy being part of a small intimate group of kayakers, in an area with very little light pollution, because the darker it is, the better you see the glowing sparks in the water.

What is Bioluminescence?

A lot of marine bioluminescence is called Plankton. Plankton by definition is a “sea drifter” meaning it is at the mercy of the waters and moves with it. We see phytoplankton, because it is autotrophic, meaning an autotroph creates organic compounds, typically using light or chemical reactions for energy.

bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by living organisms. It occurs widely in marine (in)vertebrates and micro-organisms and you will likely see it in New Zealand on our Auckland bioluminescence kayak tour. We can break it down as bio- - lumen - -escence : 'life-light-process'. When the organisms move in the water they create a beautiful glowing effect. This means that you can see fish underwater by the glow that they give off as they swim, your paddle will glow as you maneuver the waterways, and the natural flow of water will illuminate these organisms.

Bioluminesence  is not phosphorescence ; a form of photoluminescence linked to fluorescence . These all  absorb and reemit light, they do not produce light.

It is a biological response of microscopic algae/organism of  luciferin and luciferase called a Dinoflagellate , which is why we coined the term ”dino bio”. The perfectly natural and harmless concentration of organisms produces light before your very eyes, often existing in millions per liter of water. Your tour will include a ton of information about these rare and exotic creatures with the most experienced guides in the area.

In the warm and dark lagoon waters lies a natural phenomenon of glowing blue waters alive with activity. The swirling of your hand, every paddle stroke, and the rolling wake off of your kayak all sparkle throughout the darkness. Many guests encounter the darting blue tracer trails of nearby fish swimming, describing them as an under-water laser light show.

Many guests compare the experience to Pandora of “Avatar.” Some even recall the bioluminescence scene in “Life of Pi” as the gentle plankton leave a trickling glow when you hold it in your hands and let it trickle down your arm.

An Ocean Full of Stars - Bioluminescent Algae: their ecosystems are very rare, often found in warm-water lagoons with narrow openings to the sea. These living lights in the ocean, you can experience right here with us.

Bioluminescence is like Pandora of “Avatar” and scenes in “Life of Pi”

Escape with us to the most pure and otherworldly experience that natural New Zealand has to offer.

See the plankton glow in the dark from your first paddle stroke on the bioluminescent kayak tour. As the night grows dark, step into your very comfortable kayak and get ready for a personal encounter with this remarkable phenomenon.

Our professional guide will lead you to the best spots where the glowing algae accumulates. You will be enchanted by how every stroke of your paddles leaves behind a glowing swirl of bluish light, and fish light up their path like shooting stars in the water.

Bioluminescent organisms - from shimmering squid to flashing fish - produce light through the oxidation of luciferin catalyzed by luciferase. They glow for various reasons such as repelling predators, attracting mates, or luring prey. Plankton, particularly phytoplankton, also exhibit bioluminescence and play a vital role in marine ecosystems as they drift with ocean currents.

Other things that light up are chemiluminescence and thermoluminescence .

Marine Heatwaves and Climate Change

Marine heatwaves and climate change can impact bioluminescence positively due to altered ecological conditions, increased nutrient availability, adaptation, shifts in ecosystem dynamics , and changes in symbiotic relationships. This helps SNM forecast our bioluminescence tours due to sea surface temperatures . The rise in ocean temperatures may favor the growth and distribution of bioluminescent organisms, leading to an overall increase in bioluminescence. However, while this phenomenon is noteworthy, it does not outweigh the severe negative consequences of climate change, including ocean acidification, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss. Efforts to mitigate climate change and protect marine ecosystems are crucial for maintaining a sustainable and balanced environment.

A lot of the East Coast beaches in the Upper North Island of New Zealand, particularly from Auckland through to the Bay of Islands.

When can you see bioluminescence in NZ?

You are most likely to see Bioluminescence in Auckland during the warmer months from October through to May. We run tours of 2 hours duration, starting at sunset around the high tide.

What's the best time to see bioluminescence?

The best time to see bioluminescence is after sunset when it is absolutely dark with weather of no winds or rain.

Can bioluminescence be predicted?

No but they can be highly presumed. We know the places to be and when to be there, but never is there a guarantee.

Is bioluminesence an algae or organism?

Bioluminesence is a living organism that has chemical reactions causing its glow.

What conditions do you need for bioluminescence?

Ideal conditions for viewing bioluminesence is no wind, no rain, darkness and warm waters.

What color is bioluminescence?

Most bioluminescent organisms in the ocean produce blue-green light, the color that transmits best through ocean water.

Who will be my guide / instructor / teacher?

We select the best staff for the job based on their skills, knolwedge and experiences. They will be an SNM staff member or we will bring in support from equally competent contractors. Sometimes we also bring in (semi)celebrity guests!

Bioluminescence Night Tour Auckland

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by living organisms. It is a form of chemiluminescence. Bioluminescence is found in fungi, organisms, fireflies, bacteria, (in)verterates and more.

Unlike phosphorescence, photoluminescence and fluorescence that  absorb light, Bioluminescence produces its light!

Auckland bioluminescence

Word-forming element, meaning "life, biology, biological, of or pertaining to living organisms" from Greek bios "one's life, course or way of living, lifetime".

Auckland bioluminescence

Unit of luminosity, coined in French 1894 by French physicist André-Eugène Blondel from Latin lumen "light"

Boogie Boarding Bethells Beach

Word-forming element meaning "process or state of being," from Latin -escentia, from -escentem

Auckland bioluminescence

Phosphorescence is a form of photoluminescence linked to fluorescence. When a shorter wavelength light (radiation) touches phosphorescence, a phosphorescent substance (glow in the dark stickers, sea creatures, etc.) will glow, absorbing the light radiation and reemitting it at as phosphorescence.

Auckland bioluminescence

Photoluminescence is light emission from anything after absorping photons (electromagnetic radiation). That could be you or I after an MRI scan! It happens from photoexcitation exciting electrons to a higher energy level atom. It is simply another form of luminescence (light emission).

Auckland bioluminescence

Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. So basically back to phosphorescence; another form of luminescence. We just dont say or spell phos fluorescence , rather phos phorescence.  So what is phos- ? It comes from phosphorus: "substance or organism that shines of itself," from Latin phosphorus "light-bringing,".

Auckland bioluminescence

Luciferin are any organic substances in luminescent organisms. From Latin Lucifer it means "light-bearer", but pruducing almost no heat (it is a cold light). Luciferins undergo enzyme-catalyzed reactions with molecular oxygen. That creates an excited state emitting light.

We see it in fireflies (yellow light), freshwater snails (latia luciferin), bacteria, coelenterazine (found in squid, fish, and shrimp; containing aequorin proteins of blue light emission), vargulin (ostracods and deep-sea fish) and fungi (Foxfire present in decaying wood).

So this one is bio-lumin-escence: 'life-light-process'

Auckland bioluminescence

Luciferase is a light-producing enzyme naturally found in insect fireflies and in luminous marine and terrestrial microorganisms.

Very similar to luciferin, but where luciferin is the substrate and luciferase the enzyme. However, luciferase differ because they do not need an external light source, but do require the addition of luciferin, the consumable substrate.

Auckland bioluminescence

Dinoflagellates are unicellular marine organisms with two flagella (microscopic hair-like 'whips' for cell locomotion). They produce light when excited (by movement) or scared (predators -  dinoflagellates can produce the worlds most poisonous toxins).

It is still contentious whether they are algae or organisms.

Auckland bioluminescence

Chemiluminescence occurs with checmical reactions create an emission of electromagnetic radiation generated by oxidation.

That radiation - whether ultraviolet, visible, or infrared - can usually be associated with the oxidation energy transfer to molecules undergoing oxidation. Those molecules then lose excitation energy by emitting proper light wavelengths.

Living organisms that luminescence are fireflies and bacteria.

Auckland bioluminescence

Thermoluminescence is light emitted from minerals and crystalline materials. It comes from electron displacement of previous high radiation exposure. If heated to atleast about 450° C (842° F), they can reemit those radiation exposures and electron displacements, displaying light.
