This is a hard-to-find small 5th wheel. Has queen size bed, sofa that will sleep 2 and dining area folds down to make a bed that will sleep two, if you are close! Four burner propane gas range top, oven, microwave, sink, antenna for tv hookup, built in radio and cassette tape player. Bathroom has sink, shower and tub combo and new toilet. Not sure if refrigerator is working. This can be pulled by a half ton pickup and the hitch is included. We purchased it from a dealership and was told it was permanently parked under cover in a park. Items: Towels, Toaster, George Foreman Grill, Frying Pan, Bed Sheet Set, Comforter with Duvet Cover, 3 small rugs, folder with owner manuals I invested 5 years of time and over $25,000 to develop this RV Camper. I started with a Scamp 5th Wheel because its only 6' 8" wide allowing it to get into real tight places. I stripped the original Scamp out completely including the frame. Yes, I started with just the original Fiberglass Shell and original windows. I added fenders, a back storage compartment for the generator plus extra storage for misc items. Then I redesigned the frame and interior. All interior cabinets are 3/4" plywood that is screwed together every 2" - 3" apart with construction adhesive being used . This is one solid trailer. I have always said that you could crash, roll over and over down an embankment and it would stay in one piece. Just hook it back up and go on your way. Modifications completed in 2005. The new owner of this trailer (an explorer or adventurer, a hunter or fisherman) will find this trailer to be uniquely comfortable. Whether your in a snow storm or a down pour, in desert heat or northern sub-zero temps, this camper is extremely cozy. If you are 6'4" tall, this probably won't work for you. I'm 5'11" tall and can stand up tall anywhere inside or stretch out full height in the sleeping bunk - so 6" tall would probably be about the comfortable height limit. Insulated great - with 4 adults inside the trailer in 45 degrees temperatures, you won't need the furnace. Just the body heat will keep it comfortable inside. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Best Under 25 Foot Fifth Wheels

Not everyone needs or can afford a big, luxurious camper. Under 25 foot fifth wheels are great for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors, but prefers to keep it compact. There are many benefits to such a camper.

RVs and trailers are very popular these days. People are renovating trucks and vans into liveable homes. Instead of going on an uncomfortable journey, however, you can take the comfort of your home with you in an under 25ft fifth wheel.

A fifth wheeler is a type of trailer that does not have its own engine but is rather towed with a truck. This frees up a lot of space inside the trailer and makes things more spacious. You can easily detach the trailer whenever you want to move around more easily, so 25 foot is more than ample for most people.

Fifth wheel trailers under 25 feet long still provide a lot of space and are reasonably priced. We are going to look at the best under 25-foot fifth wheels you can buy today.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

The Ultimate Fifth Wheel Guide & the Best Fifth Wheel RVs of 2023

Last Updated on November 17, 2023 by Christina

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Recreational vehicles are growing in popularity with adventurers of all ages and fifth wheel RVs are perfect if you want to quickly hook up and take off. Whether you like to keep camping simple at your local campgrounds and state parks, you are a recent retiree who wants to hit the open road and explore or you are ready to splurge on luxury, there are fifth wheel floor plans for every need.

A fifth wheel is a home on wheels that offers the most spacious accommodations and luxurious amenities of any other type of towable RV. Unlike a motorhome, fifth wheels tow behind a heavy-duty truck, giving you more mobility than a Class A or Class C RV. Fifth wheel RVs are also a cost-effective alternative to the expensive and ongoing costs associated with hotel lodging, eating at restaurant and traveling by air.

Fifth wheels are great for larger families and for those who want some privacy while camping. The roomy interiors are also perfect for hosting get-togethers with friends and family. Additionally, they offer a smoother driving experience with less sway, so they work well for longer trips.

Is a fifth wheel worth it?

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Fifth wheels are split-level RVs that must be towed by a truck with a special hitch. Typically, a fifth wheel will have a living space or bunk area on the lower level and a private bedroom that hangs over the truck bed. Fifth wheel RVs are available in all sorts of styles and sizes. The smallest fifth wheels have less than six feet of headroom and are just large enough to squeeze in a wet bath. The largest fifth wheels weigh tens of thousands of pounds and must be towed with a semi-truck cab.

Fifth wheel travel trailers are great because they offer both the flexibility of a towable vehicle, as well as the comfort and luxury of super-sized RVs. If you plan to spend more time on the road, then you will want to make sure you have enough space for long comfortable trips, as well as some amenities for those rainy days. Even if you’re only a weekend warrior, a fifth wheel gives you plenty of extra leg room to feel comfortable anywhere the road may lead. If you have a family with children, a fifth wheel can give you a little bit of extra privacy.

When it comes to choosing between travel trailers versus fifth wheels, there are not many differences. Instead of thinking of it as fifth wheels being better or travel trailers being better, it’s more about fit and which kind of RV best suits how you want to travel.

Travel Trailers

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Fifth wheels and travel trailers vary greatest when it comes to length. They are available in a bigger range of lengths — from 12 to 35 feet. You can get the same roomy feel of a fifth wheel with a large travel trailer, but you also have the option to go much smaller. The smaller options allow you to tow with a smaller vehicle, like an SUV or light pickup truck. In other cases, you may be able to tow with a mid-size truck rather than a full-size truck. On average, a fifth wheel weighs somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds. In contrast, travel trailers tend to weigh 3,000 to 12,000 pounds.

Fifth wheels have an unparalleled amount of storage compared to other types of RVs. The longer an RV, the more outdoor storage bays it has available. In addition to more exterior storage bays, fifth wheels are often equipped with a basement of sorts. This term refers to large pass-through areas that can accommodate long items, such as paddles, surfboards, etc.

Additionally, fifth wheels have the greatest variety of floor plans. The placement of slide-outs can make a huge difference.

Toy Haulers

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

The main difference between toy haulers and fifth wheels is seen inside the RV. With a toy hauler, you will have a large garage space that often transforms into a living area with couches or beds when not being used to haul toys and gear. With a toy hauler, it’s not just about living in or camping. It’s also about getting your golf cart, ATV, motorcycle, dirt bikes or other toys to the campground.

Toy haulers are built on a sturdier frame and, therefore, can be much heavier. The dry weight for the average toy hauler is around 10,000 pounds, but models can range from 4,000 pounds up to 15,000 pounds. If you’re a traveling family, the extra space in the garage will provide additional sleeping areas for the kids and an indoor play area. The garage can also be converted to a space for homeschooling a young family. Furthermore, pets are another reason you might choose a toy hauler. The garage area is a great place to bring your wet, sandy or muddy pets inside, but still keep the dirt under control.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Fifth wheel RVs often stretch anywhere from 30 to 45 feet in length. Many families opt for fifth wheels because they’re usually some of the largest travel trailers. Fifth wheels can vary widely in weight, with the smallest starting at around 2,400 pounds and going up to 24,000 pounds. It’s critical to have a heavy-duty truck — and a fifth wheel hitch — to tow them.

Unfortunately, not every fifth wheel will fit in any RV park. Many older parks have not updated their campsites to reflect the length of newer RVs. Even some national park campgrounds can’t accommodate an RV more than 30 feet long. If you plan to stay in state parks and national parks often, you may want to consider a short fifth wheel. Many RV parks across North America can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet long, but be aware that those spaces may be limited. Make reservations in advance.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

While travel trailers attach to your vehicle using the conventional hitch ball system found on most trucks and SUVs, fifth wheels use a special hitch which can only attach to the bed of a pickup truck. Because fifth wheels tend to be larger and heavier than travel trailers, you’ll need a truck with a high towing capacity. Before purchasing an RV, check the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for the fifth wheel and compare it to your truck’s towing capacity. If the GVWR is heavier than the towing capacity, you’ll either need a bigger truck or a smaller RV.

That said, many people find that towing a fifth wheel is easier than towing a travel trailer because of the way it is hitched.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Due to their size and weight, fifth wheels are best suited for a campground or a campsite that is easy to access. Most of these trailers are not equipped for wandering too far off-road, although that doesn’t mean they can’t be used for boondocking in a remote location. You’ll just need to choose the right place to accommodate a towable RV of this size.

Most fifth wheels come with fresh, gray and black water tanks, but they can vary widely in size. Some tanks as large as 75 gallons, which provide plenty of capacity for camping off-the-grid for an extended period.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Trailing only conventional travel trailers, fifth wheels are the second most popular RV types, accounting for 20% of RV owners. An RV Owner Demographic Profile from Go RVing shows young families make up 27%of fifth wheel owners, while 34% are Millennials or Gen Zs and 24 percent are first-time owners.

Fifth wheels are, on average, used roughly 30 days out of the year. They are used most often in summer (85%), followed by fall (61%), spring (50%) and winter (36%). Just over half of fifth wheel owners prefer to stay at private campgrounds or state parks, while a little more than a third favor national parks or campgrounds.

In terms of demographics, 46% are between the ages of 18 to 34, while 54% are ages 55 and older. 59% of those with a fifth wheel are female, and 41% are male.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Popular amongst outdoor enthusiasts, fifth wheels make it easy to take the whole family camping in comfort. Outfitted with numerous amenities and features, these RVs quickly become your home away from home.

Advantages of owning a fifth wheel

Tow vehicle doubles as transportation.

When you purchase an RV, it only serves one purpose. Very rarely would you drive your RV around town to run errands. Additionally, once you set up camp with an RV, you don’t want to break everything down to run back into town or to access a nearby lake or trailhead. Conversely, with a fifth wheel, the truck that tows your RV can double as transportation both during and after a trip. When you are in-between camping trips, your truck can also act as a primary vehicle while your RV is stored.

Safe Towing Option

One of the benefits of a fifth wheel versus many travel trailers is how much safer they are to operate. A fifth wheel holds the weight of the RV in the bed of your truck. This makes it easier to maneuver the RV and increases the stability of the fifth wheel when in motion.

Extra Space

For large families, a fifth wheel is the perfect choice. Most fifth wheels feature a lofted sleeping space above the truck bed. This extra space is typically designed as a primary bedroom or a multi-bunk area. Additionally, fifth wheels frequently feature slide-outs, which can be equipped with even more sleeping options.

Versatility in Amenities Offered

There’s no limit to the amenities a fifth wheel can offer. The large body space provides ample room to host all of the extras. If you want to take your dream kitchen on the road, or if you cannot do without your own personal bathroom, a fifth wheel is an excellent choice.

Less Vehicle Maintenance

When you purchase a motorhome, such as a Class A, B or C, you commit to upkeep on a second motorized vehicle. This means double the oil changes, fluid flushes and general vehicle upkeep. With a fifth wheel, you only need to perform maintenance on your truck towing the RV. While there are still some maintenance tasks associated with owning a fifth wheel, such as replacing tires as needed and keeping moving parts lubricated, there is far less maintenance than a traditional motorhome.

Disadvantages of owning a fifth wheel

Requires a capable vehicle.

Normally, it doesn’t matter what size your personal vehicle is. For example, you can drive a small Toyota Corolla as your daily commuter. However, when you choose a fifth wheel, you will need to ensure you have a truck capable of towing the RV. Fifth wheels require a heavy-duty truck that can not only handle the weight of the RV, but can also safely stop it. If you don’t already own the right vehicle, this can require a second investment.

Separation Between Driving and Living Space

When you are towing a fifth wheel, you will be separated from your living space. Unlike a motorhome, you cannot simply run into the back of the RV and hop back into your seat. You will need to pull off the road, exit your truck and enter the fifth wheel to access the kitchen, bathroom or bedrooms. Currently, only 23 states allow passengers to ride inside fifth wheels while driving, but each state has its own safety requirements and conditions. Even if it is legal in some states, this does not mean it is always safe. Additionally, if you cross into a state that does not allow passengers to remain in fifth wheels, all passengers must ride in the main vehicle.

Needs Ample Storage Space

When you aren’t using your fifth wheel, you will need to find a place to store it. Unlike a small camper van or pop-up trailer, fifth wheels take up a decent amount of room. If you don’t have the space at home, this might require renting a storage unit or RV storage space during the off-season.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Because they’re extended travel trailers instead of motorhomes, the best fifth wheel RVs come at competitive prices. Expect to spend between $25,000 and $120,000 for a fifth wheel RV. Extra features and higher build quality will cost more. Not all fifth wheels are classified as being a luxury model. In fact, there are many models that are basic and designed to appeal to tradesmen and construction workers who want the comforts of home, but don’t necessarily care to pay extra for leather furniture and hot tubs.

A fifth wheel typically costs more than a travel trailer, as it provides a bit more amenities and a better driving experience. It’s a better option if someone wants to try full-time RVing. Fifth wheel prices tend to vary depending on the make, year and amenities that come included.

Another factor to consider is storing your RV when it’s not in use. If you do not have the space to store your RV on your property, you’ll likely need to rent space from a storage facility. On average, it costs between $50 to $200 per month to store an RV, with the actual cost influenced by various factors. The average cost to store an RV indoors is roughly $135 a month, according to Sparefoot , a self-storage marketplace. Naturally, the size of an RV can greatly influence the cost to store it.

A number of financial options are available when it comes to purchasing your fifth wheel. While some may pay in cash, most will  finance their purchase  over the course of several months. Monthly payments can be reduced by providing a large down payment at purchase. This could also help secure a lower interest rate, leading to even more savings in the long-term. Many RV dealers and banks offer great financing options.

Creating an RV budget will help you stay within your financial boundaries and help narrow your fifth wheel RV search. Be sure to also include parts or accessory upgrades, regular preventative maintenance and  RV insurance  in your budget. You will also need to account for storage costs if you are unable to store your fifth wheel on your property when not in use. RVing is growing in popularity at an exponential rate because it can be enjoyed on nearly any budget.  Read about some ways  to save money while RVing.

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Offering superior space, amenities and maneuverability compared to other towables, fifth wheel RVs are a popular choice for travelers who want it all. Owning an RV can lead to significant savings compared to the costs of a typical vacation with flights, rental cars, accommodations and meals. However, fifth wheels, like any RV, also come with long-term maintenance costs, storage fees and other expenses to consider.

Finally, choosing the right RV comes down to meeting all of your needs, including price points. 5th Wheel Vs. Travel Trailer: Pros & Cons

23 foot 5th wheel travel trailer

Making the decision between a motorhome and a trailer is hard enough on its own. But even after you’ve decided that a towed recreational vehicle will serve your interests better than an RV with an engine on-board, there’s still another critical choice to make: travel trailer or fifth wheel ?

Travel Trailers vs. 5th Wheels: Comparison

The two main types of trailers that are available are fifth wheels, which connect to a hitch in the center of a truck bed, and travel trailers, which are towed from the bumper.

Both types of trailers have their own unique benefits, but only one option will end up being the right choice for you. In order to make an informed decision about which sort of trailer is best for your particular situation, it’s essential that you understand all the facts available about both fifth wheels and travel trailers .

Each type of trailer has its pros and cons, and by understanding the advantages and disadvantages of both travel trailers and fifth wheels, you’ll be able to make a decision that you can stand by in the long term.

Travel Trailer Overview

Travel Trailer at night

While those that aren’t in the know generally refer to any type of RV that is towed behind a truck or SUV as a travel trailer, this term actually only refers to a specific type of trailer.

A travel trailer is an RV that is hitched up to a standard bumper hitch that you see on many trucks and SUVs. Consisting of a metal ball that protrudes from the rear of the vehicle, travel trailer hitches are simple and easy to recognize.

Travel trailers are generally relatively short in height even though they can drag quite a long ways behind your vehicle. They can also vary widely in length and therefore also in weight. However, travel trailers are still commonly lighter than other types of trailers, meaning that towing a travel trailer usually doesn’t require as much power as is required for towing a fifth wheel.

In general, travel trailers are the least expensive type of RV in relation to their length, which can be great if you’re wanting to dip your toes into the world of RVing without expending too many resources. Light, versatile, and affordable, there’s a lot about travel trailers to like. But these types of RVs do have their downsides, as we’ll discuss later on in this guide.

Travel Trailer Pros More affordable than 5th wheels ✔ Can be towed by a variety of vehicles✔

Travel Trailer Cons Smaller than 5th wheels✖ Smaller storage capacity✖

5th Wheel Overview

5th wheel

Fifth wheels look quite a bit different from travel trailers. While they share the key attribute of not having an engine with their travel trailer cousins, the first thing you’ll notice that’s unique about 5th wheels is the bulbous overhang at the front end of these RVs. Unlike travel trailers, fifth wheels connect to a special kind of hitch that’s installed in the center of the truck bed.

The overhang at the front of a fifth wheel has a male hitch that connects to the female hitch installed in the truck. While travel trailers hitch up vertically, fifth wheels hitch horizontally , a design that comes with a number of compelling benefits.

Even when comparing fifth wheels and travel trailers of the same length, fifth wheels often seem roomier inside due to the split-level design .

The area that hangs over the truck is usually the location of the master bedroom and it is reached by way of a small flight of stairs.

Not only does having two levels make a fifth wheel seem larger than a travel trailer, but these types of RVs are also usually taller than their travel trailer equivalents, providing for extra head-space and a more open aesthetic.

Because part of the trailer hangs over the truck bed, fifth wheel trailers don’t extend as far behind a truck as do travel trailers of the same length.

Despite all of these impressive benefits, fifth wheel trailers aren’t the clear winner when it comes to trailer designs. Fifth wheel trailers have certain detractors that may make you want to opt for a travel trailer, as will be made apparent later on in this guide.

5th Wheel Pros More spacious than travel trailers and better for families ✔ Taller ceilings ✔ Better handling when towing ✔

5th Wheel Cons More costly on gas due to weight✖ More expensive than a travel trailer✖ More clearance issues due to height✖

5th Wheel & Travel Trailer Hitches

trailer hitch

One of the most striking differences between travel trailers and fifth wheel trailers is the way in which each RV hooks up to its towing vehicle. Travel trailer hitches look just like any other type of ball hitch, but fifth wheel hitches are so large and convoluted-looking that, at first glance, they don’t even look like hitches at all.

Fifth wheel hitches consist of a large, usually trapezoidal contraption that sits in the center of a truck bed.

These types of hitches consist of a mounting mechanism, supporting arms, and the hitch itself, which sits on top of the arms.

The most common type of fifth wheel hitch consists of a metal jaw that closes around the male hitch the protrudes from the bottom of a fifth wheel overhang.

Other types of less-sturdy hitches consist of a slide bar that pushes across once the connection to a fifth wheel has been made.

Whichever type of fifth wheel hitch you end up using, installing one of these hitches is a serious endeavor.

You have to start by installing mounting rails in the back of your truck, which requires drilling holes in the truck bed and attaching heavy steel components under the truck.

You then have to assemble and install the fifth wheel hitch, which is removable but often weighs in excess of 100 pounds.

Once the arduous installation is out of the way, you’ll find that connecting a fifth wheel trailer to a fifth wheel hitch is much easier than connecting a travel trailer to a ball hitch.

That’s because you can see the hitch in the rear-view mirror while the ball hitches on travel trailers are universally outside of your field of view. While hitching up to a travel trailer generally requires a lot of guesswork and the presence of another person as a spotter, hooking a fifth wheel up to a hitch is generally something that you can do by yourself.

Even though fifth wheel hitches are easy to connect to a fifth wheel trailer, they aren’t without their downsides. Fifth wheel hitches take up a great deal of room in the bed of your truck, making it harder to transport cargo or use your truck bed as a work-space.

If you do want to free up space in the back of your truck, you have to remove the hitch, which is easy to do in itself but usually requires two people due to the immense weight of most fifth wheel hitches.

Travel trailer hitches, on the other hand, don’t take up any room in the bed of your truck. Chances are, your truck or SUV is already equipped with a standard ball hitch, and, if not, these types of hitches are much easier to install than fifth wheel hitches.

One of the great benefits of towing a travel trailer is that you can install a travel trailer hitch on many different types of vehicles while a fifth wheel hitch can only be installed in a truck.

The most common types of vehicles to equip with travel trailer hitches are trucks and SUVs, but if you aren’t planning on towing a very long or heavy trailer you can even hook a travel trailer hitch up to the back of a minivan or jeep.

Conversely, if you don’t have a truck, your selection of potential trailers is limited to travel trailers only. For those that have a truck and simply can’t decide between a travel trailer and a fifth wheel, it’s important to remember that fifth wheel trailers have unique benefits above and beyond what we’ve already discussed, which will be made clear in subsequent sections of this guide.

Which Trailer Is Easier To Pull

There’s a big difference between travel trailers and fifth wheels in terms of dynamics on the road. In terms of how well each of these types of RVs pulls, all things considered, the fifth wheel is the clear winner. That’s not to say that travel trailers are hard to pull; on the contrary, pulling a travel trailer can be a breeze and these types of RVs have unique attributes for towing that should definitely come into consideration.

But fifth wheels are undeniably more stable and more maneuverable than travel trailers.

There are a few reasons for the superior towing action of a fifth wheel. Being hooked up with a more heavy-duty hitch means that fifth wheels are more firmly rooted to the bed of your truck, leading to less sway and wobble caused by wind and road conditions.

Also, even with the longest models of fifth wheels, the overhang over the back of the truck means that the butt end of a fifth wheel always extends less of a distance from the back of your truck than a travel trailer of equal length.

Partially due to this reduced length and partially due to the hitch design, fifth wheels are also more maneuverable than travel trailers. Travel trailers only have a certain degree of turning motion before the front corner of the trailer hits the back of the towing vehicle.

While this can sometimes also be the case with fifth wheels depending on the type of hitch and size of the fifth wheel, in general you can turn a fifth wheel as far as 90 degrees to either side in relation to the position of the truck in order to make your way around difficult corners or back up into a specific position.

One category in which travel trailers have the edge on fifth wheels when it comes to performance on the road is weight. No matter what, a fifth wheel trailer will weigh more than a travel trailer of the same length. If you’re trying to make your way down muddy dirt roads or ascend an icy hill, that reduced weight can be a true lifesaver.

While a 35-foot travel trailer will obviously be heavier than a 19-foot fifth wheel, travel trailers also therefore have an advantage over fifth wheels in terms of fuel economy. The lower weight of travel trailers makes it so that you expend less gasoline or diesel while in motion, reducing the cost to fuel up and potentially increasing your maximum range.

The Campground Life

When it comes time to pull into a campground to stay the night, you’ll immediately notice some serious differences between camping in a fifth wheel versus camping in a travel trailer. First of all, fifth wheel trailers are generally more spacious than travel trailers, something that you’ll truly start to notice when it comes time to set up camp for the night.

If you’re traveling with friends or with a large family, you’ll notice that the overhang in a fifth wheel provides for a degree of privacy that is often lacking in travel trailers. Since the maximum length of fifth wheel trailers exceeds that of travel trailers, you’ll always have a greater capacity to entertain guests in a fifth wheel than you will in a travel trailer.

Some fifth wheels even have multiple enclosed bedrooms and bathrooms ( Read this post on 5th wheels with 2 bedroom floor plans ), making the more luxurious fifth wheel options seem more like miniature mobile apartments than RVs. Certain fifth wheel models are even equipped with storage space under the body of the trailer that can be the ideal place for hiding away camping equipment and inflatable watercraft.

Travel trailers, on the other hand, are the perfect option if you don’t mind being a little bit closer to nature without all of the fuss. While travel trailers are inevitably smaller and less private than fifth wheels, for those that want to relish being out in the great outdoors, a travel trailer might be just the thing.

It’s important to note that not all fifth wheels are luxurious and not all travel trailers are small . Some travel trailers can be nearly as luxurious as top-of-the-line fifth wheels , but will always lack certain amenities like on-board generators.

Some things about staying at a campground are just the same whether you’re camping out in a travel trailer or a fifth wheel. Hooking up electricity and water follows the same general process no matter what type of camper you’re in, and stabilizing and disconnecting your vehicle from the trailer is a simple process no matter what type of trailer you choose.

Fifth wheels generally have larger tanks than travel trailers, which doesn’t matter that much when it comes to staying in campgrounds but which can make a big difference should you choose to camp off the grid.

Better Trailer For Boondocking

For some, the ultimate activity to engage in with an RV is boondocking. While certain types of people would shudder at the thought of leaving civilization entirely behind and striking out into the wilderness on your own, camping off the grid is the only way to go for certain adventurous RVers. Some people even select the type of RV that they want to camp in based on that particular model’s ability to rough it in the great outdoors.

Both travel trailers and fifth wheels have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to boondocking. While fifth wheels have larger water and waste tanks, leading to a greater potential duration that you can stay off the grid, these types of RVs are also generally taller and sometimes wider than travel trailers, making certain back-roads inaccessible.

Travel trailers are usually lighter than fifth wheels, making them easier to pull up steep inclines and thread through treacherous terrain. On the other hand, fifth wheel trailers are more stable than travel trailers, meaning that there will be less jostling back and forth as you make your way down poorly maintained dirt roads.

If you have a long, tall, and brand new fifth wheel trailer, you might want to think twice before taking it way off the grid into uncharted territory. All it takes is one stray branch to utterly ruin your camping trip by putting out a window or poking a hole in your roof. If you have a light and compact fifth wheel, that’s another story, but remember that the smaller your trailer, the less tank space you have for water and waste. When it comes to boondocking, the superiority of one type of trailer over another is truly a tossup.

Travel Trailers vs Fifth Wheels: The Bottom Line

Even though each type of trailer is better equipped for certain situations than the other, there’s no clear winner in the contest between travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Fifth wheels generally make for better full-time residences due to their roomier interiors and impressive amenities.

Plenty of people live full-time in travel trailers as well, but these types of RVs are more beloved by those for whom camping is more of a hobby than a lifestyle.

Since a large and expensive hitch isn’t required to operate a travel trailer, towing one of these RVs is less of a commitment.

When it comes time to select the right type of trailer for your situation, take accurate stock of your plans and needs and make an informed decision accordingly.
