Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason Adds New Dates to 2023 Saucerful of Secrets Tour

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Founding member of  Pink Floyd , drummer  Nick Mason , is heading to Australia in September to present his Saucerful of Secrets show. Mason, who has been Pink Floyd’s sole constant member dating back to their 1965 inception, will be joined by the likes of Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp in performing selections from Pink Floyd’s early catalogue.

The tour itinerary has grown in size, with additional shows announced for Sydney and Melbourne. Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets will kick off their Australian tour with two shows at Melbourne’s Forum in mid-September before reaching Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. Find more details below.

Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets – ‘Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun’

In addition to Mason and Kemp, the Saucerful of Secrets lineup includes former Pink Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, guitarist Lee Harris and keyboardist Dom Beken. Mason assembled the group in 2018 as a way to bring Pink Floyd’s pre- Dark Side of the Moon  music to wider audiences around the world.

Pink Floyd’s earliest lineup centred on vocalist and songwriter Syd Barrett , who was at the helm for the band’s 1967 debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn . Their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets , arrived in 1968 and was the only Pink Floyd album to feature both Barrett and his eventual replacement, guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour.

After parting with Barrett, the band began to develop a more lateral and expansive sound, as heard on the albums Atom Heart Mother and Meddle , which laid the foundation for the commercial juggernauts Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here .

“With the help of some like-minded friends, I have embarked on a voyage of discovery of the music that was the launch pad of Pink Floyd and my working life,” Mason said in a press release regarding Saucerful of Secrets. “It seems too early to retire, and I missed the interaction with other musicians.”

Pink Floyd 50th anniversary dark side of the moon roger waters remake 5

Move over, Taylor Swift — Roger Waters has re-recorded the most famous of the albums he made with Pink Floyd in the 1970s for its 50th anniversary. The project, titled “The Dark Side of the Moon Redux,” comes out Oct. 6. The album’s first single, “Money,” a fresh take on the 1973 song that was the band’s biggest hit, was released today as an audio track and lyric video.

Any similarities to Swift’s re-recordings end with the most basic concept, as Water says he does not mean the new version to supplant the old one, but to complement it as a more mature take on the material.

Popular on Variety

In the video interview, Waters cites the 50th anniversary of “Dark Side” as an opportunity to do “a re-imagining” and “a way to celebrate the 50 years that the original recorded version of this work has survived, by making a different version of it. Not to supersede it or to replace it, but to remember it and as an adjunct to it, and to progress the work of the original concept of the original record, all those original songs.

The CD will follow the original 10-song sequence of the album. So will the double-LP, but that edition will have an additional track on side 4, “a bonus 13-minute original composition inspired by the re-recording as a final track.” It is labeled, at least for now, simply as “Original Composition.”

The album is produced by Gus Seyffert with Waters, and the lineup of musicians will be familiar from his touring band, including Seyffert on bass and other instruments, Joey Waronker on drums, Jonathan Wilson on guitar, Johnny Shepherd on keyboards, Via Mardot on theremin, Azniv Korkejian on vocals, Jon Carin on keyboards and lap steel, and Gabe Noel doing string arrangements.

Until recently, Waters remained with Sony Music, but that relationship seems to have finally come to an end after decades. The announcement said the album will be on an independent label, SGB Music, with distribution by Cooking Vinyl.

Waters’ previous project, the EP “The Lockdown Sessions,” also consisted of re-recorded material — mostly from “The Wall” and “The Final Cut” and came out on Sony Legacy in December. Both these projects are rare additions to a Waters solo canon that has been as inactive on the recording front as he has been prolific as a tourer. Since 1992’s “Amused to Death,” he has released only one conventional album of new studio material, 2017’s “Is This the Life We Really Want?” In 2018 he also released his version of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale.”

The new “Dark Side” arrives at a time that is opportune in some ways, given the 50th anniversary, and inopportune in others, considering how much more polarizing a figure Waters has become in the last few years, due to his fervent support for Palestinians and raging against Israel. He has also drawn fire for supporting Russia’s rationale for starting the war in Ukraine and for favoring China’s position in Hong Kong, as well as his traditional complaints about America’s leadership.

Some fans have also felt caught in the middle in the broadsides Waters and Gilmour have occasionally tossed at one another during their lengthy estrangement, which most recently resulted in Gilmour’s wife Polly Samson calling Waters an antisemite and a lip-syncer, and Gilmour signaling his agreement. Waters replied by saying he was looking at taking legal action, but that prospect has not come up publicly again. Those exchanges happened before Waters’ latest hot water, in which multiple cities in German attempted to halt his tour stops there on the basis of what they believed were anti-semitic statements and/or the mock-Nazi imagery in Waters’ recreation of “The Wall.”

On tour, Waters offers very faithful recreations of the wealth of Floyd material performed each night, with band members doing recreations of the Gilmour parts, so these rearranged new studio versions mark a break in what has been the Floyd co-founder’s usual approach toward the oldies.

Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets 2023 Tour

will pink floyd tour in 2023

Mason said the group were not a tribute band, but wanted to “ capture the spirit ” of the era; he stressed that Kemp was not a replacement for original Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968.

The band made their live debut in May 2018 in front of an invited audience at Dingwalls in London, playing a selection of Pink Floyd material released before their 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon .

Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets made their debut at a sold-out test show at Dingwalls, a 500-seat club in London, in May 2018. This was followed by three small shows at the Half Moon, Putney, a European tour in September 2018, and a North American tour in 2019.

On 18 April 2019, Roger Waters surprised the audience at the New York Beacon Theatre by joining the band to sing “ Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun “. The band was due to begin a European tour in April 2020, but this was postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have recently announced festival appearances for July of 2023, including a stop in Pompeii and a tour of Australia in September 2023!

The European leg of Roger's new tour - THIS IS NOT A DRILL - has now been announced, and is a new production. The show will be presented "live in the round" - a departure from Roger's previous shows. The production has already been seen in the US and Canada in the latter part of 2022, showcasing both the new visuals, and the new set list. More details of that can be found in the show pages for Roger's 2022 tour - but don't go there if you don't want to have any surprises spoilt!

Those who have attended - or have seen pictures/video of - Roger's previous tours, will know just how spectacular and moving this new production is likely to be, and how it is a show you really shouldn't miss! From comments Roger has made in recent interviews, it could be his final tour...

There is a Live Nation presale from 10am on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20th (details here ), and for the regular sale of tickets, which starts on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st at 10am (local time), CLICK HERE . Using this direct link also helps toward the ongoing running costs of this site, and is appreciated!

WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!

Do not read on if you don't want surprises to be spoilt, regarding what the band played!

Night forty of the 2023 This Is Not A Drill tour for Roger Waters, his band, and crew, who were back in Manchester for the final show on this leg. Towards the end of the year the tour resumes with South American dates.

It was a venue familiar to Roger, having played there on his previous tours (albeit under different venue names). It's a well set-out, modern arena, with good sight lines and decent acoustics - perfect for a show like Roger's. There were no special guests, or alterations to the set list, for this final night - and final outing of the "in the round" staging, but it wasn't a totally normal performance.

One small, unexpected difference for this particular show: during the rendition of The Bar, he was visited by an uninvited guest, as the Manchester Evening News reported.

'The music icon paused his show half way through - after a Manchester bee decided to position itself on his hand while he was sat at the piano. He had been performing song The Bar when he noticed it. Looking visibly astonished, the 79-year-old music man lifted his hand with the bee still attached as he told his thousands of fans what had happened. He said: "That is unbelievable. That has been on my hand for the whole last chorus."

'Inspecting the insect calmly sitting on his hand, Waters decided to give it a cheeky chat up line. He said: "Hey darling, sweet thing. Do you come to these concerts often?" He then said he would blow on it to see if it would go and sit on someone else as the big screens showed the bee.

'Dutifully, the bee responded. And Waters let out a rock 'n' roll "Yeahhhh" before continuing his show.' They also note the significance in the city of the bee. 'The worker bee has long been the symbol of Manchester, due to the city's heritage built on industry. But the Manchester bee went on to represent the city's indomitable spirit following the Arena bombing on May 22, 2017.' The Arena that suffered that atrocity was repaired and Roger performed there in 2018 and now, in 2023.

Initial reports from the fan community are that the show was as expected from last year's experiences of Roger's latest production, but as always, we value your first hand views on all the concerts - so if you went, please let us know your thoughts!

BD visitor Richard Collins was one of those at this show, and Richard called it a "fantastic show. Very emotional though."

CONCERT REVIEW by BD CONTRIBUTOR, Heather Fenton

We made it! Once again the long journey north was well worth it and on a weekend that Manchester was heaving. Never mind 50,000 at Parklife or going out for an early meal late Saturday afternoon where the pub we go to was like walking into the Etihad Stadium, lots of happy footie fans singing their hearts out and enjoying a few pre match beer in the sunshine. Another first for me was the ‘Your phone is your ticket’ which caused numerous sleepless nights as I’m not tech savvy but once I got the Ticketmaster App and the comforting guidance of the Arena staff all went well. At least we remembered to make a note of our seat numbers unlike some poor souls!

The configuration of the stage was a brilliant idea even if at first we were somewhat confused by it but so much better than Roger and band being no larger than the bee that wanted to join him.

As for the show itself a mixture of excellent music, Rogers personal political statements and a lot of mellow reflection going back to his old friend Syd and a tribute to his brother who died earlier this year. Very poignant and sad and again touching on loss. Two Suns in the Sunset was a disturbing end with accompanying graphics but if it kept fans awake all night at least Roger had given us a lot to think about!

Of the tracks played Sheep was again outstanding as was Have a Cigar and his old favourites from The Wall. In fact though there were no weak numbers amongst them and along with the satire Roger was on fine form and some lovely humorous touches. If this is going to be his final show then I am so glad we saw it...we are not wearing as well as Roger is and it was a fitting finale to the fantastic shows we’ve seen since 2007. But, as I said in 2018, if he was to do Manchester again.......... it was brilliant!

Les Claypool to Cover Pink Floyd’s ‘Animals’ on 2023 Tour

Primus leader Les Claypool  announced the return of his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade after a 20-year hiatus, featuring his friend and collaborator Sean Lennon as a guitarist.

The group unveiled a 41-date summer tour on which they’ll play the 1977 Pink Floyd album Animals in full. Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads and Adrian Belew will co-headline 11 dates during June, performing the band’s 1980 LP Remain in Light .

The complete run of dates can be seen below, with tickets on general sale at 10 a.m. local time on Friday.

Claypool formed the Frog Brigade in 2000, describing it as “kind of a King Crimson meets Pink Floyd meets Frank Zappa type thing.” They were last active in 2003. He said in a new statement: “In an age of calibrated chaos, moral constipation and conspiranoia, it is reassuring to know that certain frogs can and do fly.”

in 2021, Claypool and his Primus bandmates launched a tour that featured a complete performance of Rush 's 1977 album A Farewell to Kings each night. "They did us proud," Geddy Lee said after attending a performance . "And we thank them deeply for the tribute and the lasting friendship."

“ Remain in Light is a high point in my career,” Harrison said when the live project with Belew was announced. “Adrian and I had often discussed the magic of the 1980 tour and the sheer joy it brought to audiences. It is such a delight to see that joy once again in the audiences on the current tour.” Belew added that it was a “joyful show of Talking Heads songs you know and love performed by a hot, 11-piece ensemble,” noting, “You can’t help but dance and go home with a happy smile on your face.”

Brit Floyd bringing its 'World Tour 2023' to 1st Summit Arena

Apr. 13—JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Brit Floyd's extravagant show is coming back to Johnstown to offer the best elements of Pink Floyd.

The band will bring its "World Tour 2023" concert to the area at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, 326 Napoleon St., downtown Johnstown.

The new production celebrates 50 years of the groundbreaking and iconic musical masterpiece, "The Dark Side of the Moon."

The show includes classic tracks from the album such as "Time," "Money," "Us and Them" and "The Great Gig in the Sky."

The two-and-a-half-hour set list will also showcase other highlights from Pink Floyd's catalog of albums, including tracks from "The Wall," "Wish You Were Here," "Animals," "The Division Bell" and "Meddle."

Taking to the stage to perform note-for-note renditions of classic Pink Floyd tracks will be the band of musicians that audiences have become familiar with worldwide over the years, including longtime guitarist and vocalist and musical director Damian Darlington, who has played more than 2,500 Pink Floyd music-related concerts throughout his career.

The band also features Ian Cattell, Edo Scordo and Eva Avila and other musicians who have joined the ranks of Brit Floyd over the course of the past decade.

Brit Floyd is a popular offering at the arena, having performed 10 shows over the years, most recently playing to a large crowd in April 2022.

"This band has such a loyal following of fans who year after year keep coming back and seeing the show because they know what to expect out of it," said Chad Mearns, marketing and box office manager at 1st Summit Arena.

"They know it's going to be an incredible reproduction of everything you'd see in a Pink Floyd show from the vocals to the instrumentation to the visuals."

The show faithfully recreates the scale and pomp of the final 1994 Pink Floyd tour, complete with a stunning light show, iconic circular screen, lasers, inflatables and theatrics.

"I'm a Pink Floyd fan and I don't just like the hits you hear on the radio, I enjoy listening to the deep cuts and songs that aren't as known, and Brit Floyd does an incredible job with the back catalog," Mearns said. "They do a nice mix that's going to please someone who's a fan of the hits as well as somebody who's a fan of the deeper cuts."

Having performed more than 1,000 shows since its launch in Liverpool, England, in January 2011, Brit Floyd have circled the world and sold out tours across, Europe, North America, South America and the Middle East.

The band has performed concerts at some of the world's greatest venues, including London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and New York City's Radio City Music Hall.

"You can expect to be blown away, and it's incredible how they have that sound and it's more than just matching the notes," Mearns said.

"They get the feeling and sound down, and even the vocals, and they sound like David Gilmour and Roger Waters. If you are at all a fan of classic rock, progressive rock and jam rock, then this is well worth your time and money."

Ticket prices range from $35 to $85, plus fees. Select tickets are 30% off by using promo code FLOYD23.

"We're on track for this to be the best overall show that we've had from them yet," Mearns said. "We're hoping this year we get a few more people who are going to come out and experience the band for the first time."

To order tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.com .

Tickets also are available at the 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial box office.

Pleasantly surprised!

They played really well, Pink FLoyd is no easy band to cover but they nailed it. Every musician was clearly talented(and there were may), which is important because one weak link and a Pink FLoyd cover band will immediately sound sloppy. The setlist was great, I like their experimental years, so hearing Set the controls for the heart of the sun, and Careful with that axe Eugene was very cool. During the build-up in Careful with that axe, I feared they woudn't go all out with the scream, but even that climax was done amazingly. The crowd which was 60 years old on average seemed a bit shocked by this hahah. Echoes and The great gig in the sky (which was beautifully performed by 3 women) were just on another level, super powerful stuff. The visuals were quite alright, not special and sometimes unfit for the music, but none of that discracting epileptic stuff.

If you like Pink Floyd, see these guys! you won't be dissapointed.
