What to Look For in Travel Car Seats

Installation.

LATCH, also known as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, is an alternative way of securing the car seat to the vehicle without using the seat belt. Both the vehicle and the car seat must have LATCH parts to install the seat properly, but most car seats (and vehicles manufactured after 2002) will do so. The car seat has straps that come from the bottom and a tether at the top. These attach to the lower anchors in the car, found in the space between the rear back seat and seat cushion, and to the top anchor, which could be near the rear window or on the car ceiling. When in doubt, check the vehicle manual and seat instructions.

"This makes it safer for the child—and the parent—in case of an incident during takeoff or landing and in case of turbulence during the flight."

“Rear-facing is the safest way for kids to ride in the car, but it’s not always possible on planes due to the tighter space,” added Pratt. “If the car seat fits rear-facing on the plane, that’s best. But kids who rear-face in the car can forward-face on the plane if they are at least 1 year old and meet their car seat’s forward-facing requirements. Then they seamlessly go back to rear-facing in the car at the destination.”

In my guide to the best body pillows , I explored the same orthopedic and spinal issues that many people hope to alleviate with an ergonomic seat cushion.

To gain more insight into using an ergonomic seat cushion for comfort and spinal alignment, I spoke with physiatrist Dr. Akhil Chhatre , director of spine rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. And to learn how specific types of materials can better serve specific body types and ailments, I spoke with Dr. Alan S. Hilibrand , co-chief of Spinal Surgery and director of Orthopaedic Medical Education at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

This guide builds on research conducted in 2020 by Melanie Pinola, in addition to my research of peer reviewed studies on the efficacy of gel cushioning and how to choose a seat cushion for optimal comfort.

This guide is for people who sit for the majority of the day—in a traditional office chair, in a car, or at your dining room table (as I sometimes do)—and find that sitting in these seats is an uncomfortable or painful experience.

If you use a chair that you find uncomfortable, an ergonomic seat cushion may be a budget-friendly alternative to buying a more supportive desk chair . Though it’s unhealthy to sit all day, we do understand that not everyone can afford a standing desk, and some people may not be able to take multiple breaks throughout the day to stand up and walk around.

Both of the spinal surgeons we interviewed recommend ergonomic seat cushions for people with back pain, joint issues, a slipped disc, or sciatica. However, there’s no prescriptive seat cushion for any population—the comfort of any given cushion is entirely subjective, and people should be open to trying out a few types to see what works best for them, Dr. Alan Hilibrand of Sidney Kimmel Medical College told us.

These cushions can also provide a little extra seating height, which may help with sciatic pain, since it allows you to extend your knees. But if you have serious pain, it’s best to seek treatment with a physician or specialist. Seat cushions alone won’t be able to heal your aches and pains.

We considered seat cushions designed specifically for wheelchair users but found that wheelchair seat cushions are an entirely different category of cushion and thus deserve their own guide, which we hope to tackle one day.

Tempur-Pedic Seat Cushion

Firm support for better posture.

Made of thin but dense memory foam, this contoured cushion encourages better seating posture than completely flat alternatives. At 2 inches thick, it does not provide much added height.

Buying Options

Best for: People who prefer cradling, firm support, and helpful posture adjustment over ample cushioning and height will like this.

How it feels: Using the Tempur-Pedic Seat Cushion feels like sitting on a block of sand that incrementally contours to your body.

Why it’s great: Testers described the Tempur-Pedic cushion as “very firm, with stable support,” and indeed it was the firmest of all of the cushions we tested. Half of our testers commented positively regarding the consistency of the support, with one person even saying that out of all the cushions they tried that day, this was the one he had to adjust to the least.

The Tempur-Pedic cushion’s solidity gradually guides you into a more upright posture, mitigating the amount of compensation you need to do to stay comfortable while sitting for long periods of time. While Tempur-Pedic’s cushion doesn’t provide the same dramatic memory-foam cradling as its mattresses do, it does still provide slow softening and supportive cushioning no matter how long you sit on it.

The 16-by-16-inch cushion fit well on the three chairs we tested it in. And the stretchy nylon and spandex outer cover is fully removable and machine washable.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Tempur-Pedic cushion comes with built-in cradling grooves that help guide your hips to where they should be while sitting. However, this feature may be a bit uncomfortable or isolating for some users.

And although the Tempur-Pedic cushion is a great option for an office chair, we’d be hesitant to recommend it for long car rides, since it doesn’t have an anti-slip bottom. (However, in an earlier round of testing, users didn’t find this to be a major issue.)

Finally, if you need your seat cushion to provide substantial added height, the 2-inch-thick Tempur-Pedic cushion is not for you.

Tempur-Pedic does not offer returns on its seat cushion, but it does offer a five-year warranty.

Cushion Lab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion

Where height meets comfort.

This medium-firm coccyx pillow offers tailbone relief and height—and it comes in two sizes.

Best for: The Cushion Lab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion is great for people who need added height and medium-firm cushioning, people who sit for long periods of time, people with tailbone pain, and anyone who doesn’t necessarily have body pain but sits in an uncomfortable chair.

How it feels: It feels like a firm, pressure-relieving bed pillow that never goes flat—only it’s for your butt.

Why it’s great: Cushion Lab makes this seat cushion in both standard and large sizes, eschewing the familiar one-size-fits-all model. Although I found the regular-size cushion (at 18 inches wide with 4 inches of memory foam) to be on the firmer side, I did appreciate that the larger size (21 inches wide, with 5 inches of memory foam) had a more comfortable, medium-firm feel.

One of our testers liked that this cushion’s memory foam molded to their body without forcing them into a more upright position. The same tester noted that as soon as they sat on this cushion, it immediately complemented her body.

The Cushion Lab seat cushion is a coccyx cushion , which means that it has a cutout that’s supposed to be positioned to accommodate your tailbone. According to Hilibrand, this cutout is ideal for people with tailbone pain, since it reduces pressure on that area.

The standard and large sizes of this seat cushion come with a removable, washable cover and a nonslip bottom, making them perfect for use in a wide array of seating arrangements. At about $100, the larger size costs roughly $14 more than the regular version, which may be worth it for people over 210 pounds or for folks who prefer a medium-firm cushion over a firm one.

Though coccyx cushions are ideal for most people with tailbone pain, they can sometimes add extra pressure to the sides of the sciatic nerve. It’s best to either try these types of cushions before buying them or opt for a seat cushion without a coccyx cutout.

The large size of this cushion is 3 inches bigger than a typical office chair seat, so we recommend measuring your chair before purchasing.

Medline EquaGel Balance Cushion

Malleable and supportive.

A thick yet lightweight gel cushion that feels solid under people who weigh up to 300 pounds. At 18 inches wide, it may not fit some smaller chairs.

Best for: You’ll like this option if you like the feel of gel seat cushions or mattresses but want something more solid. People with tailbone pain, older people with less muscle mass in the buttock area, and people with bigger bodies might also prefer the Medline cushion.

How it feels: Sitting on this cushion feels like sitting on jello packed tightly in plastic.

Why it’s great: The Medline EquaGel Balance Seat Cushion is similar to the Purple Double Seat Cushion (a former pick), except that it is made to fit wheelchairs. We initially hoped to use this model for wheelchair cushion testing, but decided to test it against regular seat cushions instead. Surprisingly, we found that we preferred it over the Purple cushion, if only by a matter of degrees.

With 2 inches of honeycomb gel and at 16 inches wide, the Medline cushion easily distributes weight, making it solidly comfortable despite a slightly jiggly first impression. Dr. Akhil Chhatre, director of spine rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said this can be attributed to the fact that “gel has the ability to provide better structural support at higher pressures, and as a result the outcomes are better for bigger body types.” This is especially true for the Medline cushion, which can support people who weigh up to 300 pounds.

Where our testers said the Purple cushion felt awkward for a longer period of time, they praised the Medline cushion for providing consistent support that felt solid rather than squishy. They also noted that despite being bigger, the Medline cushion is lighter than the Purple cushion and feels cooler over extended use. And according to Hilibrand, a gel grid cushion is also a great option for people with tailbone pain, without the added worry of putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

The Medline cushion comes with a machine-washable cotton cover with anti-slip grip. A tag tells you which side goes to the front, which we found to be very helpful. The insert is hand-washable with soap and water.

The Medline cushion is designed to fit the average adult wheelchair seat (18 inches wide), so in some cases you may find that it flops over the front of your desk or dining chair. That said, this happened with only one of the three chairs we tested it in. We’d recommend measuring the chairs you plan to use it in before purchasing.

Budget pick

Xtreme Comforts Large Seat Cushion

Comfortable and affordable.

This seat cushion is bigger than others we’ve tested and has more ample cushioning. It’s a great value if you’re looking for plush comfort at a low price, but it’s not ideal for those with tailbone or sciatic pain.

Best for: The Xtreme Comforts cushion is a good option for people who want a cooling, comfortable addition to their current seating arrangement for less than $50.

How it feels: This is a cushion you can really sink into; it’s thick and soft.

Why it’s great: Compared with the other budget cushions we tried, the Xtreme Comforts cushion was more plush, stayed cooler longer thanks to its vented cover, and offered more immediate comfort without the need to adjust to quirks of its material or contours. Although it’s a big cushion at 19 inches wide and with 3 inches of foam, the Xtreme Comforts cushion fit all the chairs we tested it with.

Our testers liked this cushion’s inconspicuous looks; one commented that the cover was soft and attractive enough that she could almost forget that it was on her chair. Since it covers the whole seat, it actually looks like part of the chair rather than something you placed on top of it.

We also like that the cover is removable and machine washable.

Xtreme Comforts offers a one-year return policy and a satisfaction guarantee. So if during the year you own this cushion and you find it to be too soft, too hot or too big, you can easily get a refund.

While the 3 inches of foam is pleasantly thick, it’s not memory foam, so it’s not as firm as our other picks and doesn’t cradle you as intentionally. Instead, you get more of a squishy, buoyant feel. As a result, this cushion doesn’t provide tailbone or sciatic support.

Because it’s wider than most of our other picks, it would be best to measure your chair before buying to ensure it’ll fit properly.

Though this cushion kept us cooler for longer than other budget picks, it still got hot after longer periods of sitting. You can either take it as your cue to get up and move around once in a while, or you can opt for a cushion that’s a bit more breathable, like our other picks.

Dimensions: 19 by 17 inches

If you want a gel seat cushion that fits a slightly wider chair: The Purple Double Seat Cushion was our top pick in a previous version of this guide. Unlike our pick, which is 16 inches square, the Purple Double Seat is 16 inches by 18 inches. We still like it for its breathability, durability, and easy washability, and it offers great support for the tailbone, too, with two levels of firmness.

It didn’t make our list this time because the Medline EquaGel Balance Cushion was a bit better in all of these categories. Our testers also noted that the Purple cushion took longer to adjust to than they’d like.

Over the course of three months, we researched all the cushions available today, gathered expert advice, and ultimately decided that a great ergonomic seat cushion should have the following features:

Versatility: Ideally, you want to be able to take your seat cushion everywhere—from your office to your car and anywhere else you might sit for an extended period.

A cushion that’s too big may not be able to fit well in either a standard office chair, which tends to be about 17 to 20 inches wide, or a driver’s seat, which is usually around 18 inches wide.

Made for diverse heights and weights: Since everyone’s body is different and has its own specific needs, we looked for ergonomic seat cushions that had positive reviews from people of varying heights and weights. We also gave extra points to models that came in more than one size.

Machine washable: We prioritized cushions that made it easy to remove and wash their covers. The ability to clean the insert itself is a major plus, but we didn’t consider it a must-have.

Supportive, but not rigid: We chose options that made sitting for long periods of time more comfortable than sitting on a seat alone. Though some people prefer a solidly firm cushion to help them correct their posture, we also recognized that a seat cushion that’s too hard may exacerbate existing nerve or joint issues.

We also stayed away from cushions that could be too soft or too malleable to offer proper support. Feeling like you’re sitting on a fluffy pillow for hours on end just doesn’t cut it. Hilibrand told us that soft, pillow-like cushions have no benefit and can exacerbate sciatica by forcing you to flex your hips more.

With these main points as guideposts, we gathered the most promising seat cushions and had eight people with diverse body types and weights ranging from 130 to over 200 pounds (all of whom work predominantly while sitting) try them out. Once we narrowed down our picks, I personally sat on them for a few hours at a time to gather my own impressions.

This is not an exhaustive list of all seat cushions we’ve tested. We have removed cushions that are no longer available or do not meet our current criteria.

The Everlasting Comfort Seat Cushion & Lumbar Support Pillow Combo is a great alternative to the Xtreme Comforts Large Seat Cushion we recommend, if that cushion is out of stock. We chose the Xtreme Comforts cushion as our budget pick because it was more comfortable, less expensive, and provided better cooling, but this cushion is similar in most regards.

The Turmerry Latex Foam Seat Cushion is essentially a slab of incredibly heavy latex cushioning. It would be better suited to use as a couch insert or in an upholstered armchair.

The Waoaw Seat Cushion propped our testers up high with its 3 inches of memory foam, but it didn’t feel any more comfortable than sitting directly on a chair.

The TushGuard Seat Cushion was one of the smaller options we tested at 13 inches wide, which left a chasm between the cushion and the edge of the seat. As a result, we can’t envision bigger bodies comfortably utilizing it. Even though the TushGuard cushion has 4 inches of memory foam, we still worried it would go flat sooner rather than later. In addition, the memory foam had a noticeable smell that did not dissipate over the course of our testing.

The TravelMate Seat Cushion checked a few of our boxes with its nonslip bottom, removable and washable cover, and supplementary height, but it seemed to flatten almost immediately in our testing. Generally speaking, it didn’t offer the support or comfort required to make it a standout.

Long Term Blood Perfusion When Sitting on Three Different Cushioning Materials”

Goossens, Delft University of Technology, March 2006

Delft University conducted a study to determine the affect of various cushioning materials on blood perfusion (flow) over time. The aim of the study was to compare blood perfusion in the tissue in a live setting as opposed to a laboratory to get a more accurate reflection of real life conditions. Slouching or slumping in a chair for a prolonged period can increase discomfort and pain in the lower back, according to one study. A lumbar support pillow can provide back support and help correct your sitting posture , leading to less lower back pain and allowing you to stay physically active and pain-free throughout your life.

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab test all sorts of seat cushions , sleeping pillows and mattresses for back pain to help you stay pain-free in your daily life. To find the best lumbar support pillows, we had testers of a variety of ages try different options and provide their feedback on factors like comfort, ease of use and back support during their nine-to-five.

This highly-rated lumbar support pillow is a favorite among Amazon shoppers and our Textile Lab. Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab Senior Analyst Emma Seymour used this pillow for two years and loves the lower back support it provides. "The foam was both comfortable and supportive," Seymour said. "I noticed less neck pain as it encouraged me to not hunch over while working."

The curved shape promotes better posture while the memory foam is firm, yet comfortable to lean against. While the foam can trap heat, the mesh cover (available in five colors) is breathable and can easily be removed and thrown in the washer. The cushion easily slid over Seymour's office chair, but she noticed it shifted a bit over time, requiring her to occasionally readjust it.

A cylindrical, oblong pillow may not be the first shape you think of when picturing a lumbar support cushion, but this pillow is surprisingly a popular choice among physical therapists for its ability to support proper spine alignment. Karena Wu, P.T., D.P.T. , physical therapist and owner of ActiveCare Physical Therapy , says she "always recommends the McKenzie lumbar roll."

The GH Institute's textiles analyst Grace Wu was coincidentally recommended this pillow by her physical therapist too. She used this pillow without the strap on her office chair so that it would slip down if she began to slouch: "It helped encourage me to actively correct my posture," she said.

The pillow comes in standard and firm density options, with a single strap that can fit around chairs or car seats and a removable cover for easy washing — all impressive features for such an affordable option. There's also an inflatable version for traveling that Dr. Wu shares "works wonders on airplanes."

Whether you have a long commute to work, you're prepping for a road trip or your job involves driving, sitting in a driver's seat can be just as uncomfortable as sitting in an office chair all day. This cushion from Tempur-Pedic is thinner than other options, has a longer shape and is strapless , making it a great option for those looking to add lumbar support to their long drives.

GH Textiles Analyst Grace Wu rated this cushion at a medium firmness level. "It conforms to your body just enough to feel comfortable while also encouraging proper sitting posture," Wu says. One tester loved the "sink-in soft" material. While the memory foam is comfortable, our textile experts say this material traps heat, and Wu found herself overheating after several hours of use.

If you're on the shorter end, the Travel Lumbar Pillow size may be a better fit. Wu and another tester preferred it for fitting perfectly on their chairs and being "easily portable."

The unique butterfly shape of this pillow is designed to support your spine and multiple areas of the back, and one tester said she liked that the shape "hugged" her sides a bit. The extended upper wings of the pillow provide support to the top half of your back, while the bolstered bottom of the pillow supports your lower back. The contoured shape creates an ergonomic spine crevice.

Testers liked how easy the pillow was to put on their chair and appreciated that it did not shift, saying the straps kept it perfectly in place. Multiple testers found the pillow to be hard and firm, but most agreed that it ultimately corrected their posture and alleviated back pain. Seymour thought it had a good balance between firmness and comfort, noting that she sat up straighter and taller than she did without it.

The outer fabric is a knit material and that Seymour says feels a little hot and sweaty at times. "My old one was mesh, which felt a little cooler to the touch," she says. Luckily, the cover is removable, so a quick wash will do the trick to keep it fresh.

Complete the set with the brand's Pressure Relief Seat Cushion (which our testers loved) and the Ergonomic Foot Cushion for better alignment of the body and maximum back support.

One tester found the pillow to be squishy enough to lean back into, but firm enough to correct her posture. "I was surprised that the pillow rarely fell or budged, despite how much I fidget and move in my seat," she shared. That said, if you slide down your seat or move too much, the pillow will roll down. Another tester brought the pillow home and said it "did a good job of supporting [her] back" while sitting on a couch, but wishes it were slightly smaller.

Made from latex rather than memory foam, Grace Wu says the pillow will not trap heat and is more resilient — a feat that's rare among lumbar support pillows.

One tester who has experienced lower back pain for years thinks this squishy-yet-firm cushion would be helpful if she were having a flareup. She said, "This was very comfortable to use. I love the additional amount of support on my back, but also the almost massaging cushion that the purple insert provides."

Testers disliked the setup process, which involves fitting a floppy gel insert into a cover. One tester said the process was "a bit cumbersome" and another said the adjustable strap was difficult to fit around their chair.

The contoured seat cushion will provide relief to your tailbone, hips, thighs and legs, while the back cushion will encourage correct posture and support your lower back. Available in four colors, this cushion is pricey and a bit bulky if you're trying to travel with it, but the support it provides to your bum and back makes it worth it. Plus, the non-slip cover on the bottom prevents the cushion from shifting and sliding on your chair.

How we chose the best lumbar support pillows

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluates mattresses, pillows and seat cushions with the help of our experts and feedback from consumer testers . To find the best lumbar support pillows, our analysts recommended products they've tested. We also researched brands and evaluated customer reviews.

After narrowing down options, we gave our testers lumbar support pillows to try in their office chairs and homes. T hese testers responded to a detailed survey about their experience so that we could evaluate the comfort, ease of use, back support, quality, breathability and pain relief of the pillows.

On top of that, we spoke with physical therapist Dr. Wu about she recommends in a lumbar pillow.

What to look for in a lumbar support pillow

The material, shape, firmness, size and more can affect which pillow is right for you and your chair.

✔️ Material: Our top picks feature memory foam, gel and latex fills. These materials support the back, but some are better at relieving pressure or correcting your posture. The fill will also affect the firmness, with memory foam feeling firmer than its bouncier counterparts, gel and latex. A mesh cover may be more breathable and less sweaty than knit covers. ✔️ Shape: Popular shapes of lumbar support pillows tend to be cylinder/roll, curved wedge/rectangle and contoured. Grace Wu recommends speaking with a physical therapist or medical professional to evaluate your sitting position to decide what pillow shape to buy. "There’s unfortunately no 'one size fits all' in my opinion," she says. Factors to consider when picking a pillow shape and size are the setting (car vs. office), the type of chair, your frame and your height.

✔️ Straps: Some pillows strap onto the backrest of your chair, which can help ensure it is positioned properly and does not move. Pillows without straps can be easier to bring from one chair to another, and they may promote active posture correction. Wu says both options have their benefits: "Those with straps are likely meant to sit higher on a chair and can be adjusted based on your frame, but straps won’t always keep the support in place, as desk chairs can vary greatly in size and shape."

✔️ Size: The thickness of the cushion can affect the support, contour and firmness. Contoured options like Cushion Lab's Back Relief Lumbar Pillow are quite bulky and may be too big for smaller chairs. Small rectangular cushions like Tempur-Pedic's Travel Lumbar Cushion may be too thin and small for someone tall or a large office chair. The Cornell University Ergonomics Department's suggestion for backrests states that the depth of the lumbar curve of the backrest should be 0.6 to 2 inches and the height should be between 5 and 9 inches.

Do lumbar support pillows work?

Studies show that sitting slouched or slumped for a long time can lead to discomfort in the lower back. L umbar support pillows that effectively improve your posture while sitting at a desk or in the car for hours should relieve discomfort and reduce back pain. "The point of the lumbar support pillow is to remind you to sit up with good posture and to force you to use your postural muscles to work in maintaining this good upright posture," Dr. Wu says.

In one study of male participants with a "lumbar support pillow with a cut-out for the posterior pelvic tissues," there were multiple benefits found in the results : the center of pressure measure improved, the lumbar region was closer to neutral and the amplitude of the postural difference in the lumbar region slightly improved.

Dr. Wu says a lumbar support pillow helps prevent back pain because it forces your lower back to retain its normal curve. Future research is needed to definitively determine the long-term benefits of lumbar support pillows, but the correction of posture and reduction in pain for most users make them a useful tool in aiding back pain.

How do you use a lumbar support pillow?

Dr. Wu advises placing the lumbar support pillow in the space of the lower back, above the pelvis. "If you have your bottom flush against the back of the chair, lean forward and place the support pillow in the 'crook' of the low back," she explains. It should not be placed between your buttocks and the back of the chair, so aim to place it a little higher up if it is a smaller pillow with straps. When you first set up the lumbar support pillow, Dr. Wu says it should immediately make you feel like your lower back has a slight arch.

Who should use a lumbar support pillow?

Anyone who sits in a chair can benefit from a lumbar support pillow — and Dr. Wu says there are no downsides to using a support pillow long-term (so, it doesn't hurt to try). Those who sit for prolonged periods of time can benefit the most from lumbar support because it will prevent slouching and consequently, less back pain. This may include corporate workers at a nine-to-five job, truck drivers, people on a road trip and college students studying for hours at a time.

While it's safe to try a lumbar pillow, it's best to see a doctor if you are experiencing chronic pain in your back. The pain may be caused by a more serious factor or injury, especially if your lifestyle does not include tons of sitting.

What material is best for lumbar support pillows?

Most lumbar support pillows are made of memory foam or gel and each has its pros and cons. While memory foam is firm, it notoriously traps heat and conforms to your body (causing your back to slowly sink into it). Latex and gel cushions have a bouncier, squishier feel. "Gel is a dense liquid, similar to what you would find in gel shoe inserts, while memory foam is a solid foam that displaces its cells as opposed to moving the fluid around,” explains Dr. Bethel.

Wu says most lumbar support pillows on the market are made of foam. How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

My ticket to Suzdal is bus number 159, platform 10 at 12:00 and seat number 6.

When you have your ticket, go outside to the platform listed on the ticket and wait for the bus. Simple really!

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
