P&O UK's ship Ventura undergoes deep cleaning in Southampton following Norovirus outbreak

P&O Cruises UK 's ship Ventura is undergoing an extensive sanitation process at Southampton UK after an outbreak of norovirus affected passengers during a 14-night Canary Islands voyage. The vessel, which visited Tenerife , Gran Canaria , and Lanzarote , reported several cases of illness involving symptoms of sickness and diarrhea.

Passengers who fell ill were required to isolate in their cabins after the ship embarked from Southampton on May 11th. As of May 22nd, 0.64% of passengers showed symptoms, and those still symptomatic upon arrival were scheduled to disembark after other passengers.

An initial "enhanced sanitation" was conducted on May 17th in Tenerife. However, the Southampton Port Health Authority will now oversee a comprehensive cleaning of all onboard spaces. MS Ventura returned to Southampton on May 25th, where health officials are conducting the cleaning program.

The ship was set to depart for a 7-night cruise around Spain and Portugal on the same day, but this departure was delayed. Passengers booked for the upcoming voyage have been advised to arrive four hours later than originally scheduled to allow for the necessary sanitation procedures.

About P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises has been well known and loved in the UK for 175 years. Since 2015, the cruise line has also become increasingly established on the German market. Guests appreciate the traditional high sea experience with a typically British flair. Knowledge of the English language is important to get on board. The fleet of P&O Cruises is child friendly, except the M / S Arcadia and the M / S Oriana that are ships for adults only. The board currency on all ships is the British pound.

The M / S Ventura is a mid-sized, family-friendly cruise ship that can accommodate up to 3,078 passengers (double occupancy). The ship has a length of 290 meters and offers space at 15 passenger decks. Dame Helen Mirren is the godmother of the ship, which has been cruising the oceans since 2008. The last modernization took place in 2018. A wide range of bars, restaurants, sports and spa facilities and a variety of entertainment options will keep you entertained on board. With a kid's club for different age groups and a play area for children under 2, M / S Ventura is also great for families.

On board the Ventura all common cabin categories, from the inside cabin to the suite are available. The cabins are spacious and modern equipped, with a TV, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and other amenities. The single beds can be converted into a king size bed. The indoor and outdoor cabins are 12-16 m² in size, the balcony cabins have a size of 22-29 m² including the balcony, while the suites with balconies measure between 42 and 69 m².

Atmosphere on Board

On board a British and traditional cruise experience that meets the latest standards awaits you. The atmosphere is casual and generally easy and relaxed. Casual clothing for the day, adjusted to the destination and more formal evening attire are recommended for a cruise with P & O Cruises. Too casual clothing, such as tracksuits or disguises are not welcome. Various restaurants of famous star chefs, elegant bars and shows in the style of London's West End meet the leisure requirements of modern cruise guests.

Food and Beverages

All meals in the main and buffet restaurants, snacks, cabin service and afternoon tea are already included on board, as well as coffee, tea, water and juices in the buffet restaurants. Various chefs have created interesting and varied dishes for the fleet of the cruise line. The daily changing menus in the main restaurant are inspired by British cuisine. Particularly popular among the three on-board specialty restaurants is the "Sindhu", which offers special Indian delicacies.

Entertainment, Sports and Relaxation

Over 250 Cruise Ship Passengers Reported Sick With Possible Norovirus

C oncerns regarding health and safety on cruise ships have heightened by the news that more than 250 people on board the P&O ship Ventura became sick with symptoms similar to norovirus. This highly contagious virus is known for causing gastroenteritis. The Ventura embarked on a 14-night voyage to the Canary Islands on May 11. It has since been the subject of enhanced sanitation protocols to curb the spread of the illness.

Norovirus, often dubbed the “winter vomiting bug,” is notorious for its rapid spread in enclosed environments like cruise ships , hospitals, and schools. It causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain, which can be unpleasant for those affected. According to reports , the Ventura is almost at total capacity, with just under 3,000 passengers on board. Such a number makes the outbreak all the more concerning.

Disease Outbreaks on Cruise Ships

P&O Cruises and the Southampton Port Health Authority verified the virus’s presence. Passengers exhibiting symptoms had to isolate in their cabins to prevent further spread. The recent outbreak is not an isolated incident. The cruise industry has faced similar challenges in the past, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting several outbreaks aboard different cruise lines earlier this year. Notably, the Radiance of the Seas and Sapphire Princess saw almost 200 passengers sickened by the norovirus in April alone.

The outbreak on the Ventura prompted a response from health authorities, with Southampton Port Health Authority working alongside the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to assist with the ship’s return. The UKHSA had already noted an unusual spike in norovirus cases nationwide in April. Cruise ships are particularly susceptible to norovirus due to the close quarters in which passengers live, dine, and socialize . The virus can spread rapidly through contaminated food, surfaces, or contact with an infected person.

This latest outbreak has led to calls for increased vigilance and adherence to hygiene protocols among passengers and crew. Critics argue that more must be done. They suggest cruise lines should be very transparent about health risks. They should also take greater preventative measures. In response to the current situation, P&O Cruises has apologized to affected passengers and reiterated that their well-being is the highest priority.

On May 25, Royal Carribean International's "Vision of the Seas' departed from a 5-night voyage from Baltimore to Bermuda.

State: Charges against cruise ship spotted off Kauai’s Na Pali Coast will not be pursued

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state will not pursue criminal charges against a cruise ship after it was reportedly “too close” to Kauai’s Na Pali Coast earlier this month.

DLNR officials say they “failed to find evidence” that the celebrity cruise line ship actually violated a state rule requiring it remain at least 3,000 feet from shore.

The ship’s captain was unable to give an exact distance.

An investigation was launched after social media posts showed the ship near the coast.

Kauai community advocates said the ship appeared to be in very shallow water and about 1,000 feet offshore.

Investigation of cruise ship spotted off the Nā Pali Coast is inconclusive

A two-pronged investigation by the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) failed to find evidence that the Celebrity Cruise Lines ship, Celebrity Edge, violated any state rules while sailing off Kaua‘i’s Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, earlier this month.

DOCARE officers on Kaua‘i and O‘ahu investigated the incident after social media posts showed the 2,908-passenger ship allegedly sailing too close to the coastline and community concerns about the incident.

Hawai‘i Administrative Rules (HAR) for Nā Pali Coast ocean waters restrict any vessels carrying more than 50 passengers and requires such vessels to be at a distance of at least 3,000 feet from the shoreline.

When the ship returned to port in Honolulu, O‘ahu-based officers boarded it and interviewed the captain and ship’s master. The captain said he was in full control of the vessel and was always in waters of not less than 30 meters depth. He was unclear as to the vessel’s distance from shore.

On Kaua‘i, the investigation focused on identifying witnesses who could provide relevant information. None of the witnesses could factually conclude the 3,000-foot seaward distance was violated. Some witnesses did not wish to be involved in the investigation and others only had second-or-third-hand information or repeated what they saw on social media.

The cruise line elected to include Nā Pali Coast sailings after being unable to make port calls at Lahaina due to last year’s wildfires. However, it is the DLNR’s understanding that the cruise industry is sensitive to concerns expressed by residents.

DOCARE determined there is insufficient evidence that supports probable cause or that there is clear and convincing evidence to pursue any criminal or civil action at this time.

The Very Slow Restart of G.M.’s Cruise Driverless Car Business

An incident that seriously injured a pedestrian in San Francisco led Cruise to take all of its cars off the road. The question now is when they will return.

At a sprawling complex in Warren, Mich., General Motors’ hopes for its driverless car future play out in a virtual reality headset offered to visitors.

In a video, the electric and autonomous car drives itself. Wirelessly connected to traffic lights and the surrounding streets, the car avoids collisions and reduces congestion, part of what G.M. calls its “0-0-0” vision — “zero crashes, zero emission, zero congestion.”

At least, that’s the plan. G.M.’s driverless future looks a lot further away today than it did a year ago, when Cruise, G.M.’s driverless car subsidiary, was deep into an aggressive expansion of its robot taxi services, testing in 15 cities across 10 states.

On Oct. 2, a Cruise driverless car hit and dragged a pedestrian for 20 feet on a San Francisco street, causing severe injuries. Weeks later, the California Department of Motor Vehicles accused Cruise of omitting the dragging from a video of the incident that was initially provided to the agency and suspended the company’s license in the state.

In November, Cruise voluntarily paused all operations across the country after facing widespread criticism that it was neglecting safety as it expanded its driverless taxi service. Cruise also pushed out nine executives, its chief executive stepped down , and the company laid off a quarter of its work force.

Now comes the hard part: Rebuilding a ruined reputation. In recent interviews with The New York Times, the three executives now running Cruise say they are in no rush to get back on the road. After learning the hard way about the risks of moving too fast with a cutting-edge technology, Cruise has slowed its breakneck development to a crawl to avoid another major mishap.

“For a long time before, Cruise was really moving fast and other competitors were not,” said Craig Glidden, who became president and chief administrative officer of Cruise in November. Now, he said, safety is Cruise’s “North Star.”

But going slow means the company risks falling far behind its top rivals. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has had driverless taxis operating in the Phoenix area since 2020 and San Francisco since late 2022 without serious incidents, and it recently expanded to Los Angeles . Zoox , an Amazon subsidiary, has been testing a steering-wheel-free robot taxi in Las Vegas since last June.

“Catching up with Waymo technologically is going to take three to five years at best,” said Alex Roy, a consultant and former executive in the autonomous car industry. He added that it was even harder for Cruise to catch up commercially because Waymo was “generating revenues with trust that Cruise never earned.”

Some industry observers were surprised G.M. didn’t shut down Cruise after its public meltdown late last year. Since acquiring the company in 2016, G.M. has spent over $8 billion on its driverless subsidiary. Cruise lost $3.48 billion last year, and another $519 million over the first three months of 2024.

“I was thinking in the late part of 2023 and into early 2024 that the most likely outcome was that they were going to completely turn off Cruise,” said Reilly Brennan, a partner at Trucks Venture Capital, which invests in the future of transportation.

But after slashing $1 billion from Cruise’s 2024 budget, Mary T. Barra, G.M.’s chief executive, reiterated her commitment to the company during earnings calls. In April, she told investors that Cruise had made “tangible progress,” although G.M. is exploring different options to fund the business, including taking outside investments.

After Cruise’s former chief executive and co-founder Kyle Vogt resigned in November, G.M. appointed two presidents who report to its board: Mo Elshenawy, previously the company’s executive vice president of engineering, and Mr. Glidden, who also serves as G.M.’s general counsel. In February, Cruise hired Steve Kenner, a veteran product safety executive, as chief safety officer.

The three executives all decide on safety decisions, such as when to take the next step in deployment. Those calls, Mr. Kenner said, have to be unanimous.

So far, Cruise has taken baby steps back to the road. In April, it picked Phoenix, the home to its operations center, to be the first city to restart testing with human drivers. On May 13, after a month of driving a handful of vehicles in order to understand local road features, Cruise transitioned into supervised autonomous testing , with two safety drivers per vehicle.

Cruise used to say its robot taxis were, on average, safer than a human driver. But so-called edge cases — incidents like road construction or erratic cyclists that humans can intuitively react to — bedeviled the robot taxis. Mr. Elshenawy said the cars had improved their navigation of construction zones and how they deal with emergency vehicles.

Cruise hopes to offer driverless ride-hailing service in one city by the end of 2024, while operating with safety drivers in fewer than five cities, Mr. Glidden said. That is, if the edge case issue can be improved.

While Mr. Elshenawy’s engineering team works to improve the technology, Mr. Glidden and Mr. Kenner have been traveling across the country to meet with regulators. Cruise has met with local officials and state regulators in Arizona, Texas and California, as well as with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has also spoken with several cities in the Southeast where it previously tested its fleet.

In California, Cruise has answered questions from state regulators about driverless testing, but it is unclear if or when it could regain a permit. The talent pool in Silicon Valley is essential to Cruise’s business, so executives say they are committed to staying in the state.

Whether Cruise’s cautious approach restores faith in the company among regulators is an open question. Dave Cortese, a California state senator representing Silicon Valley, said the autonomous vehicle industry’s aggressive testing on public roads in the past had “created tension and distrust.”

For the company to win over regulators, it needs a “profound demonstration of transparency” to demonstrate that an incident like Oct. 2 will not happen again, said Mr. Roy, the consultant.

“We may not agree, but I think there are lots of places where we do agree,” said Tilly Chang, executive director of San Francisco County Transportation Authority. “But it is also unclear to us what it would take for them to get reinstated.”
