Marella Cruises Reminds Us to Smile
Cruise lines are doing a lot to keep their crews busy while on board ships without passengers, but
> Captain Jason Ikiadis and his crew decided to have a little fun during their practicing of routine maneuvers off the coast of Montego Bay, Jamaica. They steered the ship along in a very familiar pattern; a smile. Not just any smile either. The pattern was the unmistakable smile logo of Marella Cruises’ parent company, TUI UK.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Marella Cruises (@marellacruises) on Mar 19, 2020 at 3:40am PDT
In the post uploaded to Instagram yesterday, Marella Cruises explained that the smile measured 12 nautical miles high, and 16 nautical miles wide.
The goal of the post, according to Marella Cruises, was to help people smile during this difficult time in the cruise industry for not just cruisers, but ship employees as well.
“Captain Jason Ikiadis, First Officer Cosmin and our bridge team worked together to trace the TUI smile as they wanted to do something that would make both our customers and teams smile as a thank you for supporting us during these unprecedented times,” the post read. “We’ll be ready and waiting to set sail with our customers soon”
instagram user Melstagrams commented on the post: Thank you for an amazing cruise on ME2 between 1st-8th March. Had THE BEST time on board for my 30th! Can’t wait to sail with you guys in the future. All the best! 😎☀️🌴🛳
The official Instagram account of Port of Haifa in Israel also left a comment: We already miss you! Come back soon!
About Marella Discovery 2
Orginally built by Royal Caribbean and launched in 1995, Marella Discovery 2 is one of six ships operated by the cruise line. From the Marella Cruises website: Marella Discovery 2 is the sister ship to Marella Discovery, which means it shares most of the same top-notch facilities. These include an outdoor cinema, a rock climbing wall and a minigolf course. Not to mention the two pools – one indoor and one outdoor – plus, seven restaurants and a spa. And to top the lot, there are Broadway-style performances are on every night in the show lounge.

Minimalistic Line Design for Cruise Ship
This is a revision to the previous concept design I submitted before. The client wanted a more modern cruise ship, rather than the titanic-like. I provided various options of color and arrangement so the design is very flexible according to what the client needs.
Fun logo concept for summer camp theme
The inspiration behind this logo comes from a previous summer where the theme was first introduced. This is a fresh approach in which I created the text from the ground up and gave it a light-hearted feel. The slime is indicative of the camp's many activities and I liked the idea of it being spattered on and kind of dripping down the word "Ooze". The word "CRUISE" is colored to give it a vacation and sea faring feel. The 3D drop shapes behind "CRUISE" and the accompanying outlines throughout are to help push the text out from the background.
Logo proposal for Cruises for Less
My goal was to create an eye-catching and easy to read logo but also unique. The modern font meets a light wave, bringing freshness and a little bit of fun to this logo.

Elements used in this design are: 1. Eiffel tower, to represent Paris. 2. Anchor, to represent the cruise or luxury boat.
Design for a cruise line
The idea is to create a logo that's a little different from a classic cruise line logo. So the idea to use very clean style with light gradients and shadows, to achieve a 3D effect. The logo is basically created with straight lines and gradients, and only few curved elements.

Travel Destinations Together
This time, the concept is more focused on luxury. By combining the initials S + E in such a way that they make a design with a luxurious feeling, plus the curves made from this combination, a map image representing the destinations is created. while the circle that frames it represents harmony. I purposefully did not include cruise features or other modes of transportation because I believe we must convey brand value to clients through visuals rather than the products or services we offer. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks.

Cruise ship 'draws' 16-mile-wide smile at sea as a departure gift for passengers
These are dark times in the world as the new coronavirus rages, and there's not a lot of upbeat news. But one small cruise ship has just given us a reason to smile.
The 2,074-passenger Marella Discovery 2 on Tuesday "painted" a 16-mile-wide picture of the Marella Cruises "smile" logo in the sea near Jamaica as it prepared to suspend operations.
For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .
The image could be seen on ship tracking sites.
A spokesperson for Marella Cruises' parent company, TUI U.K., said the ship's captain, Jason Ikiadis, and his bridge team worked together to create the smile in the waves while carrying out routine maneuvers while anchoring in Montego Bay .
"They wanted to do something that would make both our customers and teams smile as a thank you for supporting us during these unprecedented times," the line said in a statement to The Points Guy.
The maneuver came as Marella Discovery 2 was in the process of suspending operations. Like all major cruise lines , Marella Cruises is halting all voyages for at least the next month due to the coronavirus outbreak. It has canceled all sailings departing through April 16.

Known as Thomson Cruises until 2017, Marella Cruises is a British line that caters mostly to British vacationers. It currently operates six ships.
Marella Cruises is part of of the TUI Group, one of the world's largest travel companies. In addition to cruise ships, the TUI Group owns travel agencies, hotels and airlines.
Cruising regulars may recognize the distinctive profile of Marella Discovery 2. The vessel formerly was Royal Caribbean 's Legend of the Seas, the lead ship in Royal Caribbean's highly successful Vision Class series that began debuting in 1995.
The ship was transferred from Royal Caribbean to TUI in 2017.
In its statement, Marella Cruises looked ahead to a time when the coronavirus crisis had passed and the world could return to traveling.

Changing Colors: Major Cruise Brands Introduce New Liveries
- June 12, 2021
Cruise lines are embracing new hull art and ship liveries in an effort to stand out, as highlighted by Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International, which are both embracing new paint schemes on their ships.
Carnival Cruise Line
This year Carnival Cruise Line became the latest brand to introduce a new livery. In May, the company announced that the new hull design of the new Mardi Gras will become a feature across the fleet as the company prepares to celebrate its 50th birthday in 2022.
The livery is highlighted by a stately navy-blue hull, inspired by officers’ uniforms, along with vibrant red and white accents running the entire length of the ship.
After the Mardi Gras, the Carnival Magic (pictured above) was the first vessel to receive the new colors during a drydock in Marseilles.
Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean International updated its livery in 2020, adding a larger name on the hull of the new Odyssey of the Seas . Unusually big, the vessel name runs 87.4 meters down each side of the ship.
It’s the second new look for Royal Caribbean in the last decade.
The Quantum of the Seas, launched in 2014, debuted a new color template for the company, with a light blue hull.
The color scheme was later added on selected vessels, including the recently “Amplified” Freedom of the Seas.
Celebrity Cruises
As part of the Celebrity Revolution program , Celebrity Cruises is adding a new livery to its fleet. While undergoing the upgrades, the company’s existing ships also receive the color scheme of the new Edge-cClass vessels that have a dark blue hull.
The livery has been added to seven of the 11 Celebrity ships.
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises introduced a new livery in 2016 , adding a giant version of its “sea witch” logo to the hull of the 2013-built Royal Princess.
The fresh look, which also includes the repositioning of the ship’s name, was later added to other vessels and is now present on the entire fleet.
Costa Cruises
In 2018, Costa C became another Carnival Corporation brand to introduce a revised livery . The subtle change saw the name of the ships painted on the bow with a specially designed new font in larger lettering, as well as the addition of a stylized Italian flag.
The livery was created to mark the 70th anniversary of the Italian brand and has since been added to the entire fleet.
With the introduction of the 2015-built Britannia , P&O Cruises also introduced a new paint scheme to its fleet.
The brand’s traditional funnels were repainted in blue, with the addition of P&O’s rising sun logo. As part of the new livery the hulls across the fleet saw a stylized British flag added.
P&O Australia
In 2016, P&O Australia announced the addition of a stylized Southern Cross to the hull of its latest vessel , the Pacific Explorer. Along with a new color and a new logo on the funnel, the five-star constellation image became P&O’s new livery.
More recently, the look was added to the Pacific Encounter , the newest ship in the fleet.
Silversea Cruises
Silversea is introducing a new hull color to its fleet with a light gray adorned on the hulls of select ships.
Three vessels are currently sporting the updated color scheme, including the new Silver Origin.
Under construction in Italy , the newbuild Silver Dawn already shows the new gray hull as well.
Marella Cruises
To mark the addition of the former Splendour of the Seas to its fleet , the TUI-owned Marella Cruises introduced a new livery in 2016.
Then called Thomson Cruises, the brand created a new “wave design”, in-line with TUI’s airplanes.
According to Marella, the new branding was meant to keep the consistency across all markets and is now present on the entire cruise fleet.
Fred. Olsen Cruise Line
In 2015, Fred. Olsen debuted a new look on its fleet.. The new color scheme and livery represented the change of position for its product within the premium market, the company said at the time.
The gray hull is a throwback to Fred. Olsen’s heritage, when the first Black Watch and Black Prince were launched in the 1930s, according to the company. The use of the “Cartier” red line refers to the company’s “Red Carpet” service level for every guest.

Celebrity Cruise Line Profile
Celebrity Cruises Lifestyle:
Celebrity does an excellent job of combining large contemporary ships with traditional cruising. First-time or experienced cruisers looking for good service and cuisine along with large ship entertainment at a great value will enjoy a Celebrity ship. Celebrity is owned by Royal Caribbean International but provides a slightly more upscale product.
Celebrity Cruise Ships:
Celebrity ships are painted white with a dark blue hull and a distinctive large "X" on the funnel. The interiors are well-maintained and sophisticated. The ships and build dates are:
- Celebrity Millennium - 2000
- Celebrity Infinity - 2001
- Celebrity Summit - 2001
- Celebrity Constellation - 2002
- Celebrity Solstice - 2008
- Celebrity Equinox - 2009
- Celebrity Eclipse - 2010
- Celebrity Silhouette - 2011
- Celebrity Reflection - 2012
Celebrity also has three small ships designed for adventure cruising in the Galapagos Islands--the Celebrity Xpedition, Celebrity Xperience, and Celebrity Xploration. The company will add a new 2,918-guest ship, the Celebrity Edge , to the fleet in December 2018.
Celebrity Cruises Passenger Profile:
Many Celebrity passengers are moderately affluent and well-educated. Most are adults, but families with children and teens also enjoy Celebrity. Although some Celebrity passengers are first-time cruisers, many are experienced travelers who appreciate quality and value and have sailed with Celebrity or another cruise line before. Ages range from 30s to 60s in high season, younger in the low season. Most Celebrity passengers get what they are looking for--something better than a standard mainstream cruise ship.
Celebrity Cruises Accommodations and Cabins:
Celebrity has traditional inside (no window) and outside (window) cabins, and deluxe balconied cabins and suites. The accommodations are spacious and clean. Celebrity also has its special Concierge Class level that provides little extra amenities in the cabins making the cruise experience special--duvets, fruit basket, larger beach towels, plusher bathrobes, etc. Many find the Concierge Class well worth the extra money.
Celebrity Cruises Cuisine and Dining:
Celebrity's fine cuisine is one of the reasons for its success. Both the food and the service are outstanding. The ships' main dining rooms have either two fixed seatings or open seating for dinner and open seating at breakfast and lunch. The dining rooms are all non-smoking. The ships also have innovative, alternative, extra-fee restaurants that provide a unique opportunity to enjoy fine dining.
For coffee lovers, Celebrity ships also have their signature Cova Cafes, which serve Italian coffee and fresh pastries.
Celebrity Cruises Onboard Activities and Entertainment:
Celebrity has the standard production lounge shows, cabaret acts, and lots of onboard activities such as bingo, horse racing, art auctions, and games.
Celebrity Cruises Common Areas:
Celebrity ships have elegant, simplistic decor, with lots of expensive, diverse artwork. The interiors do not challenge your senses the same way that some ships do. Like many modern cruise ships, Celebrity's ships do not have a wraparound promenade around the outside. Celebrity has some nice features not found on many mainstream lines such as cold towels by the pool and cloth towels (rather than paper) in the public restrooms.
Celebrity Cruises Spa, Gym, and Fitness:
Steiner operates the Celebrity spa and fitness programs. The spa sometimes gets booked up quickly, so sign up early if having a massage or other spa treatment is important. Some fitness classes are free, other more "exotic" ones such as yoga or kickboxing charge a small fee per class.
More on Celebrity Cruises:
Celebrity's large premium ships sail worldwide. Celebrity's expedition adventure ship, the 92-passenger Celebrity Xpedition, sails the Galapagos Islands. In March 2016, Celebrity announced the acquisition of two other small ships to sail in the Galapagos archipelago. These two ships are being refurbished in early 2017 and sail as the Celebrity Xploration and Celebrity Xperience.
Where does the "X" on the funnel (smokestack) of Celebrity cruise ships come from? The Greece-based company the Chandris Group founded the deluxe Celebrity Cruise Line in 1988, and the ships primarily sailed to Bermuda. In the Greek language, "X" translates as "Chi" in English, and Chandris used the "X" as the logo on its ships. In 1997, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line bought Celebrity Cruises and expanded the fleet significantly but retained the "X".

What is Smile and Go?

What is smile and go? How did I know if I want to participate? Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, it's your Immigration check. In many ports the computer simply recognizes you from their Passport records and you're on your way. No agent. Yes, you want to participate. Makes disembarkation a breeze.
What if I do not have a passport?
Then disembarkation is not a breeze. But it could also be used to mark you on or off the ship.

You just go in a different line where you show your BC to the customs officer.
Thank you, is that for when we board?
I think they have thermal cameras to monitor crew and guests for temperature. This way if you have or develop a fever getting on or off ship they can screen you more carefully.

Debarkation.

Agree, that line is much longer than the customs line. Put your mask on take your mask off, whew.

They do indeed.

Guess I will just frown and go. ☹️
It makes getting off the ship SOOOO much faster.
It's basically like a tablet that takes your picture, then you leave. That's it. No waiting in line to go through customs. Take picture and leave.

I don't think it was in use at the time, but a great place to scan people coming back to the ship.

You debark the ship on deck 0 on a lot of ships. There's also a Deck A, and Deck B.

Perhaps not on Mardi Gras. 🙂

It's the uppermost Crew Deck on most ships.

Invest in one or it will take you longer to get off the ship

SFO has this for artivals. I am Global Entry registered and you bet I wil be frowning and smiling to get off the ship quicker!

You do not sign up for it. It happens automatically when they scan in your face at check in for facial recognition purposes...commonly called "smile & go". It's soooo much easier and convenient now.

When I did my online check-in it was something I had to agree or disagree to.

Cruise ship worker accused of stabbing 3 people with scissors on board vessel bound for Alaska
JUNEAU, Alaska — A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska’s capital city, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel, according to authorities.
The U.S. attorney’s office says the man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Online court records do not show an attorney for the 35-year-old man.
According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital of Juneau, and British Columbia.
The alleged incident happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska. According to the affidavit, during the “late evening” Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical center for an evaluation.
While there, he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” and “physically attacked” a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states. He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a “shipboard jail,” the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney’s office says.

Stock Market Crash Warning: Don’t Get Caught Holding These 3 Cruise Stocks
InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips
The cruise industry has long been a popular choice for travelers seeking a unique and luxurious vacation experience. However, behind the glitz and glamor, the industry has been grappling with several inherent weaknesses. Those have left the sector particularly vulnerable to economic downturns and unforeseen crises. These susceptibilities have been brought to the forefront in recent years, causing investors to question the long-term viability of these cruise stocks to avoid.
One of the most significant weaknesses of the cruise industry is its heavy reliance on discretionary spending. Unlike essential goods and services, cruises are often seen as a luxury. Some consumers easily forego such treats during times of financial uncertainty, such as a stock market crash. Also, high interest rate environment and inflationary pressures have battered these cruise stocks to avoid.
However, travelers are focusing on experiences and are willing to pay for them. The result is record bookings and stronger pricing power for the cruise lines industry overall.
So, while it’s still full steam ahead, a few companies are struggling with other macro headwinds. Let’s examine three such stocks to avoid.
Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL)
Royal Caribbean Cruises (NYSE: RCL ) has demonstrated improvement in its financial results. However, the company is grappling with a substantial debt burden . Notably, it has around $20 million in cash and $21 billion in debt.
However, RCL is projecting strong performance for 2024, having raised its guidance due to robust demand. The company expects adjusted earnings per share ( EPS ) to fall between $9.90 and $10.10. This follows a notable debt reduction in 2023, when RCL paid off approximately $4 billion, aiming to reach investment grade metrics.
For 2024, RCL has scheduled significant capital expenditures totaling around $3.3 billion. This price tag was primarily for its new ship orders, including the Utopia of the Seas and Silver Ray . Also, the company anticipates a capacity increase of 8.5% compared to 2023. Despite its positive outlook, its current and quick ratios stand at 0.19 and 0.09, making it a highly leveraged company. Therefore, it holds a risky position in the event of a broad sell-off in the indices, as investors typically undergo a flight to safety and away from these speculative investments.
OneSpaWorld Holdings (OSW)
OneSpaWorld Holdings (NASDAQ: OSW ) provides health and wellness products aboard cruise ships. But the sailing line has experienced fluctuations in its stock performance. And, OSW could be substantially impacted if a stock market crash comes materializes.
Still, OSW has raised its revenue guidance for 2024 to $860 to $880 million, reflecting a positive start to the year. The company reported a significant improvement in Q1 of 2024. Revenues increased to $211.2 million, a 16% rise from the previous year. Also, net income reached $21.2 million, turning around from a loss of $15.9 million year-over-year ( YOY ).
But, the situation becomes dicey because OSW’s valuation is essentially hinged on the assumption of no broader markets’ correction and its continued incredible earnings growth run.
Yet, OSW trades at 55 times earnings, and its forward P/E is 18 times earnings. So although times are certainly good for OSW, its high P/E makes its stock price vulnerable to being sold off. This is specially true if the broader macro backdrop deteriorates in the face of higher for longer interest rates and stubborn inflation.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH)
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE: NCLH ) is another major player facing similar challenges. Despite some positive earnings, the overall volatility in the cruise sector and potential regulatory changes post-pandemic add a layer of investment risk in addition to the market risks it faces.
Additionally, NCLH is significantly leveraged, but to a lesser degree than RCL. Its liquidity ratios for its current and quick measures are 0.24 and 0.13, respectively. So this adds a dimension of financial risk to the equation.
Still, the company reported Q1 revenue of $1.9 billion for the end of 2023, marking a 30.8% increase from the previous year. And projections indicate a strong year ahead. Also, it forecasts an adjusted EPS of almost $1.23. This outlook is supported by a forecasted increase in net yield of approximately 5.5% and an occupancy rate expectation of around 105.1%.
Again, this could make holding NCLH a risky proposition. Clearly, its valuation is propped up via some optimistic assumptions about its fundamentals and the broader market.

The search for a missing cruise ship employee who disappeared during an around-the-world voyage has ended, BBC News reported.
The Indian crew member was reported missing after breakfast on Friday morning while the ship was off the coast of Cape Finisterre, northwestern Spain.
The "Ambience" ship had been sailing from Lisbon to Tilbury, England, on the final leg of a 120-night trip when the employee disappeared.
Staff on the Ambassador Cruise Line ship then carried out a sweep of the vessel before it rerouted and sailed back through its previous route.
The ship is now on its way back to the UK, per the BBC.

"Ambassador is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our crew and guests. The search for the missing person is ongoing and remains our utmost priority," they continued.
"We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of our colleague at this difficult time," they added. "Specialist support will be offered to all crew affected by today's events."
Ambassador Cruise Line, which describes itself on its website as "Britain's premium value no-fly cruise line," is based in Purfleet, Essex, and operates from eight regional UK ports.
Ross Klein, an international authority on the cruise ship industry, previously told Business Insider that he believed cruise ship safety rules were outdated, noting that there had been no substantial changes to safety measures since the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010.
"I think legislation has been dreadfully inadequate," he said.
"Going on a ship today would be like going on a ship in 1990. There have been no improvements. Railing heights are the same," he added.

Design for a cruise line. The idea is to create a logo that's a little different from a classic cruise line logo. So the idea to use very clean style with light gradients and shadows, to achieve a 3D effect. The logo is basically created with straight lines and gradients, and only few curved elements.
