Best things to do in Cap Ferret – the hidden gem on the Arcachon Bay

The best things to do in Cap Ferret

Cap Ferret is a little coastal town on the Atlantic Ocean famous for its dreamy beaches and thriving oyster culture. Located about an hour’s drive from Bordeaux (depending on traffic), Cap Ferret offers a unique blend of charming finishing villages with wild ocean beaches perfect for surfing.

Nestled in the famous Arcachon Bay , Cap Ferret is known as the summer getaway for the French upper class, yet despite its growing popularity, it managed to keep its raw atmosphere of simplicity and tranquility. This unique blend of natural beauty, coastal charm, and tranquility makes it a dreamy vacation destination. In this article, you’ll discover the best ways to spend a splendid weekend (or a full week) in Cap Ferret with a list of all the best things to do and eat.

If it’s your first time visiting Cap Ferret and Arcahcon I highly recommend reading my articles about where to stay in Cap Ferret and what to do in Arcachon city .

The charming villages of Cap Ferret on the Arcachon Bay

So where is Cap Ferret actually located?

Lège-Cap Ferret is a peninsula, shaped like a narrow tongue with a long string of beautiful sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and a view of the eastern side of the Bassin. It consists of twelve little villages, one of them being the town of Cap Ferret, located in the southern part of the peninsula. While the town is considered the liveliest on the peninsula, here I’m going to mention other towns as well so that you have the chance to uncover the full charm of this place.

If you’re short on time I recommend taking the Cap-Ferret, Herbe Village with Tasting Oysters waterfront tour, so you can explore the best Cap Ferret has to offer in half a day. This tour offers a blend of main sites, from the ocean to the iconic lighthouse, along with a touch of history at La Chapelle, culminating in a local oyster-tasting experience. You can Book it here .

What to do in Cap Ferret

Where to stay in cap ferret , where to eat in cap ferret , when it’s the best time to go to cap ferret , how to get to cap ferret , eat oysters of course.

Apart from its dreamy beaches, Cap Ferret is known for its ostréiculture industry, which produces some of the best oysters in France. The Bay’s nutrient-rich waters and unique tidal patterns create an ideal environment for oyster growth, resulting in amazing oysters, with exceptional flavor and quality. So tasting oysters is truly one of the highlights of visiting Cap Ferret.

oysters from Cap Ferret

Along the Arcachon Bay coast, a multitude of oyster cabins and restaurants dot the landscape. These quaint oyster huts predominantly belong to local oyster farmers, imparting an authentic charm to Cap Ferret. Observing them at work is a fascinating experience, as these traditional methods have been passed down through generations.

One of my favorite Cap-Ferret oyster cabins along the shoreline is La Cabane du Mimbeau . The name refers to the conche du Mimbeau, which is a coastal sand spit, unique only to Cap Ferret. Established in 1860 and continuing through 6 oyster farmers generations, the Cabane specializes in oysters harvested onsite, along with other local delicacies like whelks and terrine, all accompanied by Bordeaux wines.

Other oyster cabins I recommend are La Cabane d’Hortense , which offers stunning views of the  Dune du Pilat, or Chez boulan , a renowned 1958 oyster farmer and producer with exceptional service and food quality along a beautiful setting. Another great cabin is Le Ponton in l’Herbe , a must-visit spot for oyster lovers. Situated at the end of the picturesque Village of L’Herbe, the ponton offers a serene setting right on the Basin. In addition, It has direct access to the beach, so kids can play while parents eat. A true vacation spirit!

Eating ousters is one of the bets things to do in Cap Ferret

A ride on a traditional oyster-farming boat

For a truly immersive experience, I recommend taking a boat tour on a traditional oyster-farming boat, known as a Pinasse. It will allow you to enjoy the panoramic views of the coastline and learn about the special art of oyster farming from experienced local guides.

Tours you can do in Cap Ferret

You can take your cruise tour with Pa’tchanquee from the Bassin d’Arcachone to the Dune du Pilat. With a 12-person group on board, they offer a comfortable sailing experience that combines a bit of everything Cap Ferret has to offer: swimming, sightseeing, and oyster tastings.

You’ll also watch the quaint villages and beautiful beaches along the coastline from the boat, learn about the history of the place, and discover iconic spots like Bird Island and the Banc d’Arguin. You can book your boat tour here !

Compagnie Maritime de la Presqu’île allows you to rent a Pinnace with a skipper from Cap Ferret, and go on a cruise to discover the Arcachon Bay and the Cap Ferret peninsula, as well with a group of up to 12 people.

Go to the beach

There are a lot of gorgeous beaches in Cap Ferret. From small village beaches and wilder ones on the ocean side, from crowded ones to hidden and quiet ones. La Plage des Américains, Plage de la Truquette, and Plage de l’Herbe are among my favorites, but to see the full list I recommend checking out my article about The best beaches in Cap Ferret .

Plage de la Pointe Cap Ferret

It’s important to note that during the low tide, it’s impossible to swim on the bay side and it’s thus very important to check out the tide hours before going. Here ’ s a site where you can see when the tide is high enough to enjoy the beach.

Surf on the Atlantique Ocean

With 25 km of coastline, Cap Ferret is full of amazing surfing spots with several surfing schools that offer surfing classes and camps.

The best surfing spots in Cap Ferret

Truc Vert is one of the favorite among surfers, due to its untouched, wild beauty. This secluded spot is perfect for those seeking tranquility and long, uninterrupted rides on the waves. The Grand Crohot Beach attracts a larger crowd, especially during peak seasons, and offers consistent waves suitable for surfers of all levels. Another busy beach is Torchère Beach, which is situated between L’Herbe and the village of Cap Ferret. It’s a hotspot for surfers during summer.

Dunes Beach in Cap Ferret promises a quieter surfing experience. Accessible through a charming dune passage, it offers respite from the crowds, especially in the summer months. While the path may require a short walk from Horizon Beach, the view of the Lighthouse makes it well worth the journey.

Take surfing lessons in Cap Ferret

You can also take surfing classes in one of the many surfing schools in Cap Ferret, as the waves of the Atlantic offer an ideal setting for experimenting and practicing surfing. The Cap Ferret Surf School is great for taking surfing lessons as surfers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the more popular spots. They offer 1 to 5-day courses for all levels, starting at the age of 5. You can book a lesson here .

Two other recommended surf schools in Cap Ferret include the Tutti Frutti Surf School and Alex Surf School, both operating at Horizon Beach. Both schools offer individual and group lessons from April to October for all levels.

Enjoy the view from the Lighthouse (Le Phare du Cap Ferret)

The iconic Cap Ferret Lighthouse is a prominent landmark offering a magnificent panorama of the peninsula’s land and coastline. Listed as a historic monument, it welcomes guests for guided tours, allowing exploration of its interior and ascent to the summit via a staircase of 258 steps.

The lighthouse also hosts changing interactive exhibits that showcase maritime history and its optical system, as well as the evolution of nautical chart creation.

During summer, the lighthouse operates daily from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and admission prices range from 4€ for children to 7€ for adults. See more details here .

Enjoy the Cap Ferret markets

Local markets are a great way to discover unique finds, fresh delicacies, and local products. Cap Ferret has several different markets you can explore, depending on your time of arrival!

Le marché du Cap Ferret covered market is open all year, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and daily during the summer months. This traditional covered market, located at Place du Marché, has around 120 exhibitors. You will find there clothes, jewelry, flowers, books and of course, fresh local products as well as typical products from the South-West.

The market of Cap Ferret

During the summer months, From June to September, you can enjoy the open-air markets, Le marché du Cap Ferret , Piraillan, and Claouey , that offer local artisanal goods, such as clothing, flowers, fresh oysters, and regional white wine.

Le marché de Lège is a covered market,  located near the village church. It remains open year-round on Saturdays, and though it is the smallest of the four markets in Cap Ferret, it has some really nice goods!

Rent a bike to discover other magical parts of the peninsula

Another fun way to discover Cap Ferret is by cycling along the beaches and through the pine forest that covers a large part of the Cap Ferret peninsula. A beautiful bike trip you can do is taking the circuit from the Plage de Bélisaire to The Pointe du Cap Ferret, which is 10 km long and takes about 1 hour. The route there is stunning and includes some of Cap Ferret’s main landmarks. You’ll see the beach and its magnificent view of the Mimbeau Conche and the Dune du Pilat, Fisherman’s Quarter, and the Lighthouse. To follow the path see the map here .

There are plenty of bike rentals in Cap Ferret, one of them is Bike Rental Cap Gyro (7 Boulevard de la Plage, 33970 Lège-Cap-Ferret). See the full list of rental places here .

Visit the most charming village in Cap Ferret – l’Herbe

l’Herbe stands out as one of the most charming villages in the Arcachon Basin. Wandering through l’Herbe’s narrow streets, while passing by the colorful oyster farmer cabins, you’ll sense the village’s unique charm that lies in its simplicity and authenticity.

The village’s focal point is the Sainte-Marie-du-Cap Chapel, a stunning architectural gem built in the 19th century with neo-Moorish influences. Surrounded by sand and pine trees, the chapel’s exotic facade adds to the village’s allure and serves as a must-visit attraction.

L'herbe - one of the most beautiful villages in Cap Ferret

During the summer months, l’Herbe comes alive with plenty of water activities along the beachfront. You can embark on scenic canoe or paddleboard excursions or explore the basin’s tranquil waters, And there are even more exhilarating options like parasailing, wake surfing, waterskiing, and more. You can find more information about it here .

Taste Les dunes Blanches

First Created in 2007 by pastry chef Pascal Lucas’s son, Les Dunes Blanches combines the simplicity of a chouquette (Choux pastry sprinkled with pearl sugar) with a creamy filling, resulting in an instant hit. You can read the full story on their creation in my article Discover the sweet specialties of Bordeaux .

Originating from Cap Ferret, no visit is complete without trying these heavenly treats. Elegance, lightness, and crunchiness make Les Dunes Blanches just too good! and fit perfectly at any moment of the day.

They gained such popularity that dedicated boutiques sprouted across Arcachon, Bordeaux, and even Paris. In Cap Ferret, you can savor them made fresh throughout the day at various locations including Piquey, Canon, and the Marché du Ferret. See the shop locations here .

A guided tour at an oyster farm

While there are hundreds of oyster producers in Cap Ferret, most of them are not open for visits. Having said that, there are a few farms that work in collaboration with the tourist office to offer guided tours and workshops.

For example, Sylvie Latrille at Cabane 57 in the Piraillan oyster farming district will guide you through a successful oyster experience, accompanied by wine, bread, and butter. For reservations, contact the farm here .

For a family-friendly excursion, join Véronique Lenoir on a fishing expedition along the beaches of l’Herbe village during low tide. Discover a variety of marine life, from crabs to starfish, and enjoy a memorable outing suitable for all ages. With Véronique Lenoir, a lively oyster farmer and guide, you have the chance to Walk through the open parks during low tide, discovering the intricacies of oyster farming. Don’t forget suitable footwear for water and sunscreen! For reservations, contact the Office de Tourisme .

Sunrise in Cap Ferret

Most tours are in French but if you’re lucky you might find one that is ready to make an effort in English. Be sure to contact the tourist office before you arrive to see what’s scheduled during your visit.

A day trip to the Town of Arcachon and the dune

If you’re spending your holidays in Cap Ferret, you must dedicate at least one day to visit the town of Arcachon and the dune. Arcachon , the largest town in Bassin d’Arcachon, offers stunning beaches, picturesque neighborhoods, and delectable seafood.

From mid-June to September, there’s a ferry that takes you from Cap Ferret to Le Moulleau in Arcachon, in just 20 minutes (leaving from Jetée Bélisaire). For the schedule and ticket reservation click here . Once you arrive in Arcachon, explore its four distinct regions: the summer city, winter city, autumn city, and spring city. Each area boasts unique attractions, from beautiful beaches and historic villas to vibrant markets and charming parks. for more information, check out my article Best things to do and eat in Arcachon .

The best things to do in Arcachon France

When visiting Cap Ferret, you also must visit the Dune du Pilat, Europe’s tallest sand dune. Rising to an impressive 110 m high and 500 meters wide, you’ll have plenty of room to wander when reaching up there!

You can climb the dune by stairs that are installed from the end of May to early November. If you come during the low season or just feel energetic, you can just climb straight up the sandy slopes. Once you reach the top, a stunning panoramic view will be revealed in front of you. The Cap Ferret peninsula on one side, a huge pine forest on the other, and the magnificent Banc d’Arguin nature reserve just in front.

Dune du Pilat on the Arcachon Bay

One of the best experiences you can do there is paragliding! There are a few companies offering paragliding experiences over the dune. Dune Parapente for example offers 10, 20 or 30-minute flights with a breathtaking view of the Dune du Pilat itself, the Arcachon Basin, or the Banc d’Arguin. You can book the experience here .

How to get to the dune: You’ll need a car or a bike to get to the dune from Arcachaon. If you’re coming by public transport, line 3 (Baia company) will take you from the Arcachon train station to Dune to Pilat. To return to Cap Ferret, you can catch the ferry from Le Moulleau, providing a convenient and scenic way to end your day trip.

End the night dancing at Sail Fish

Existing since 1984, the family restaurant Sail Fish offers a good meal with a festive, “vacation” vibe. Located in the heart of Cap Ferret, it’s a favorite destination for visitors of all ages, offering grilled meats by the fireplace and gourmet desserts. As the evening progresses, the restaurant transforms into a lively hub for dancing, providing the perfect setting to end your night in style!

I have an article with all my recommendations for the best hotels in Cap Ferret but here are three that I particularly like:

Domaine du Ferret Balnéo & Spa offers a serene retreat, just 500 meters from the beach accessible via a scenic cycle path. With two swimming pools, a spa, and a wellness center featuring hot tubs and massage treatments, your relaxation is promised. You can make a reservation here .

Located In the heart of the fishing area, near the lighthouse of Cap Ferret, La Maison du Bassin is a serine and charming boutique hotel. This peaceful retreat offers uniquely decorated rooms, a colonial-themed bar that provides a cozy setting to unwind, and an on-site restaurant for diners that specializes in regional cuisine. You can book a room here .

If you are looking for a more nature-inspired escape, I recommend Yamina Lodge . It is nestled in the pine forest of Cap-Ferret, Just 600 meters from Dunes Beach and close to The Cap-Ferret Lighthouse. With its warm hospitality and thoughtful amenities, including free bike rentals and access to a jacuzzi, this holiday home gives an extra comfortable and relaxing stay. For reservation go her e .

If you’re looking for a camping site, Check out my article about the best camping sites in Arcachon and Cap Ferret.

We already established that Oysters are the main product produced in Cap Ferret. But don’t worry, you won’t have to go on an only oyster diet when you’re there. Here are a few recommended restaurants in Cap Ferret:

Le Cabanon du Domaine offers market cuisine with authentic and seasonal flavors. Don’t miss the panoramic terrace in summer and their renowned Sunday brunch. You can make a reservation here .

I love the warm, natural ambiance of Roc Seven Cap Ferret . A beautiful place with good vibes, serving southern cuisine with Latin inspiration with a gorgeous rooftop. You can make a reservation here .

Le Bouchon du Ferret offers fresh fish, shellfish, and seafood specialties, everything is fresh and the setting is charming, as the place was once an old Ferret fishmonger. More information on their w e bsite .

Cap Ferret is always stunning with its calm beaches and authentic oyster huts. So whenever you’re in Bordeaux, don’t miss a chance to visit the peninsula. However, like everywhere else, there are better and worth times to travel to Cap Ferret.

The season in Cap Ferret starts around May, sometimes April if the weather is good, and ends at the beginning of October. Outside the season the villages of the Cap Ferret get very calm, there are no outdoor markets and many summer places are closed for winter. It’s not that you won’t find anything to eat but it definitely lacks the summer energy.

In the high season, especially from mid-July to mid-August, Cap Ferret gets extremely busy. That’s when many French tourists, especially Parisians flock to the peninsula and it can be quite crowded. The main problem however is the traffic. Cap Ferret is a narrow piece of land, with one main road leading to the south. That means that when many people try to get there, the traffic becomes unbearable.

So, after telling you when it’s better to avoid going there, let’s talk about when should you actually go to Cap Ferret. In my opinion, the best time to go to Cap Ferret is May, June, and September. Cap Ferret is also a very popular weekend destination for many Bordelais so if possible try to visit the peninsula during weekdays.  Of course, if you’re staying in Cap Ferret for a few days, and mostly cycling from place to place then you’ll be less affected by traffic and weekends are perfectly fine for you.

Cap Ferret is not very easy to get to by public transport so driving is the best to get here by car. If you want to rent a car, here’s a good website to get an idea of how much it is going to cost.

In case you don’t want to drive there that should not deter you from going to Cap Ferret. There is a bus (line 601) that goes from Bordeaux to Cap Ferret. Just keep in mind that it’s quite a long journey as the bus stops in many towns and villages on the way. Here you can find the updated schedule of line 601 .

If you want a more comfortable way to get there, you can hire a driver for a few hours . With this service, for example, you can hire a car with a driver for 5 hours, which is quite enough for a half-day trip in Cap Ferret. A nice tour of the town and a stop for oysters for lunch.

If you’re staying in Arcachon, you also have the option to get here by boat. From mid-June to September there’s a ferry that takes you from Le Moulleau to Cap Ferret in just 20 minutes (leaving from Jetée du Moulleau). For the schedule and ticket reservation click here .

An Insider’s Guide to the Best Things to do in Cap Ferrret

Last Updated on 25th February 2023 by Sophie Nadeau

Cap Ferret lies on a peninsula in the Bay of Arcachon. A windswept landscape with low lying houses shadowed by towering pine trees and surrounded by sandy dunes stretching as far as the eye can see, it’s one of the most popular summer resorts in France. Here’s your insider’s guide to the best things to do in Cap Ferret , as well as what to know before you go.

Cap Ferret is such a popular destination that it is sometimes nicknamed the ‘Saint Tropez of the Atlantic’. The easiest way by far to get around Cap Ferret is by bicycle. After all, parking is a bit of a nightmare and the town is spread out enough that walking can take a while to allow you to get anywhere.

Cap Ferret is located in South West France, around two hours drive away from the city of Bordeaux . Situated on the Bay of Arcachon , the town has a population of just over 8,000 residents, though this number swells in the summer months when visitors flock to the bay to experience the beauty of the Bassin d’Arcachon for themselves. Cap Ferret is around a 40 minute drive away from Andernos-les-Bains .

Best things to do in Cap Ferret

A little more polished around the edges than some of the other towns in the region such as Andernos or Arachon, Cap Ferret has a number of independent shops and boutiques. Most of the stores in town are concentrated along Boulevard de la Plage, which as its name suggests, follows the shoreline along the beach.

cap ferret main town

Hands down the best thing to see in cap ferret is the lighthouse, which dates back to 1947 and can be climbed for a fee. Just bear in mind that there are a few hundred steps to climb up so be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

The view from the top is simply breathtaking and it’s possible to see all the way to the Dune du Pilat, i.e. the largest sand dune in Europe. The lighthouse also boasts a small museum on the lower floors which give a greater insight into the history and geography of the local area.

cap ferret lighthouse

The history of Cap Ferret is inextricably intertwined with the history of France and nowhere is this more apparent than in the bunkhouses which are located all along the coastline in this part of France, including on several beaches of the Cape.

One of the most prominent bunkhouses is the Blockhaus du phare du Cap Ferret, which is situated directly next to the Cap Ferret Lighthouse and was constructed during the Nazi Occupation of France. Today the bunkhouse is free to visit and is a sombre reminder of a difficult period of French history.

Unlike many other churches in rural France, the main ecclesiastical building of Cap Ferret is incredibly modern and consists of a building dating back to the late 20th-century topped with a spire in the form of a thin white cross. The interior of the church is just as modern in appearance, with stained glass windows sculpted from deep azure blues to bright as the sun yellows.

Much like the other towns in the Bassin d’Arcachon, Cap Ferret too has its own oyster village, which is known in French as the Village Ostréicole. While oysters can be consumed any time of the day, we preferred to end our days by visiting oyster bars.

These are common all around the Bay of Arcachon and serve up simple menus consisting of oysters, shrimp, or meat paté. I personally brought along my own vegan paté to consume alongside my local wine paired with views of the glittering sea.

Beaches of Cap Ferret

Thanks to Cap Ferret’s envious location alongside the Atlantic Sea, there are actually a number of beaches which visitors can frequent while visiting the town. A number of them even overlook the Dune du Pilat (the largest sand dune in Europe).

One of the most beautiful beaches in the South West settlement is that of Plage des Dunes. This beach faces the Atlantic Coastline and is just as spectacular as it is wild. Those who are looking for a gentler pace would do well to head to the beach within the Cap-Ferret Fisherman’s Village, which is sheltered by the bay of Mimbeau.

beach cap ferret

The very end of the Bassin d’Arcachon can be found in the form of the land’s end, which is a few kilometres further south from the illustrious lighthouse and is best reached by car or bicycle as opposed to walking.

Visitors should note that there are a number of Space Invaders to be found across Cap Ferret (10 in total). These are not all situated within the vicinity of the town itself itself, but instead in the wider region. For example, I spied an Invader at Le Canon.

As with many places in more rural France, finding vegan and vegetarian options can be few and far between. This was even the case when we visited many of the oyster huts, whose only menu offerings were meat and fish.

Even when there was fare other than shrimp or oysters, the option was a meat paté. As such, I visited prepared and took my own vegan paté for eating with the bread at the oyster huts and came prepared to other places with cereal bars and the like.

With this being said, there are a few places in the French town that offer up vegan and vegetarian food. The first of these is Ferret Coffee Shop. There were a couple of meat-free items on the menu and we ate there during our stay in the town.

Though the food wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, the prices were reasonable and the food was alright. The other place in town that’s worth checking out is Bali Bowls. As well as fresh juices and smoothies, this vegan-friendly restaurant serves up amazing bowls and speciality coffees.

If you want to discover even more about local food in the Bay of Arcachon, then you would do well to book a guided tour like this one which will give you a greater insight into how the Oyster producers work and live.

Due to its popularity as a summer resort (particularly among French people), you’ll want to book your accommodation as soon as possible so as to avoid disappointment. Here are some of the best places to stay in Cap Ferret:

Mid-range: This three-star hotel is situated just a Jetée Bélisaire pier and offers non-fussy laidback rooms featuring amenities such as flatscreen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Check prices and availability here.

Luxury: For an unforgettable stay during your time in Cap Ferret, you’ll want to book yourself into this four-star hotel which boasts highlights such as a spa, restaurant, and bar onsite. Check prices and availability here.

An Oyster-Filled Week on France’s Arcachon Bay

Seaside bungalows, secret sandbanks, and beach naps..

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Everyone knows that person who spends weeks sniffing around travel blogs, going deep into Tripadvisor rabbit holes, collecting Google docs from friends of friends, and creating  A Beautiful Mind –style spreadsheets to come up with the best  vacations  and itineraries possible. In this recurring series, we find those people who’ve done all the work for you and have them walk us through a particularly wonderful, especially well-thought-out vacation they took that you can actually steal.

Having just moved from New York City to Paris last spring, I was eager to spend the summer hopping around the French seaside . High prices and rowdy crowds deterred me from the more obvious destinations in the French Riviera, so instead, I went west, swapping the Med for the Atlantic, palm trees for pine, and Riviera glitz for rustic charms that reminded me of my childhood.

I grew up in a coastal fishing town in Massachusetts , so Cap Ferret, a small village in the southernmost point of Lège-Cap-Ferret, a peninsula that splits the Arcachon Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest of France, felt instantly familiar.

French friends had described it to me as a low-key summer destination for chic French families and friends. It’s host to both swimming and surfing beaches, as well as tons of al fresco seafood restaurants and oyster-tasting shacks. I was able to convince some friends to join me in late July as we traversed the Bay of Arcachon for a week of oyster lunches, blissed-out beach days, and majestic boat trips — topping it off with an impromptu weekend in Bordeaux.

9 a.m.: Travel from Paris to Cap Ferret

From Paris, my friend Anny and I took a train to Arcachon, which required a transfer in Bordeaux, making it a three-and-a-half-hour journey by train. From the train, we walked ten minutes over to the Thiers Pier ( Place Thiers, 33120 Arcachon ) on Arcachon Beach and boarded a boat shuttle to Cap Ferret. It was a scenic 30-minute ride to cross the bay with some pretty epic views of the Dune du Pilat. Pulling up to the small port of Cap Ferret, we noticed the rows of oyster beds marked with sticks and got excited to feast on oysters all week!

1 p.m.: Settle into a surfside bungalow

Once we arrived at the port, we walked 20 minutes through the quaint sandy roads flanked by rustic ranch homes to Hotel des Dunes ( 119 Avenue de Bordeaux ), our home for the next two nights. Hotel des Dunes is the oldest hotel on the peninsula, having originally opened in 1969, and thus has become somewhat of an institution.

Hotel des Dunes

In 2022, French-born Karine Hecquet and her husband Jean-Philippe, who have spent summers in Cap Ferret, bought the property and reopened it last summer as a modern surf lodge inspired by the motels you’ll find along the California coast. This wasn’t random, I learned, as the hotel’s new owners spent their summers in Cap Ferret and had also visited Hawaii, surfing their way through Waimea Bay, Ho’okipa, and Waikiki, before settling for a few years in New York, where they fell in love with Montauk. Throughout those years, they also spent time traveling to California surfing the best breaks in Malibu, Monterey, and San Diego, often staying in fuss-free seaside motels that would eventually become the source of inspiration when they returned to France in 2015 and rediscovered the joys of Cap Ferret.

So when the couple bought Hotel des Dunes, they had high hopes of bringing back the laid-back surf spirit ingrained in the hotel’s history. Along with the nostalgic feel of California surf motels, the property seamlessly emulates the traditional architecture around the basin, like the cabins on stilts typical of the Bassin d’Arcachon, which are used to watch over the oyster fields. If Hotel des Dunes isn’t available, as there are only 13 rooms, there are tons of chic affordable Airbnb options for families and groups of friends. Here are three I love:

2 p.m.: Nap on the beach

After we settled in, we were eager to get to the beach. The beach directly across the street from the hotel, Plage des Dunes, is on the Atlantic side, so it’s ideal for wind sports, like surfing and kite surfing. One of the things that makes Cap Ferret so unique is its geographical positioning, where you can access the calmer waters on the bay side of the peninsula and the wilder waters on the Atlantic side. Once we climbed through heaps of white sandy dunes flanked by tall grass, we descended to a beach that looked like it went on for miles. Since the water was a bit choppy on this side and we didn’t have the energy for water sports after our trip, we spent the afternoon reading and napping on the soft, pillowy sand. The weather was perfect, not too hot even during the dog days of summer; it was warm and dry with a perfect breeze.

5 p.m.: Visit your first oyster tasting on the basin

From the beach, we walked down to the oyster village that lines the basin and had a late lunch/early dinner at one of the most famous oyster spots, La Cabane d’Hortense ( Rue des Tamaris ), the casual sibling to the more formal restaurant Chez Hortense, which we visited the following day. At all of these “dégustation” shacks, as they’re called, they serve oysters, shrimp, snails, and pâtés. We ordered everything on the menu and topped it all off with a glass of white wine. After the meal, we walked through the fisherman village toward the main town lined with shops and restaurants and popped into a few boutiques. Our favorite was Belle Amie ( 10 Bd de la Plage ), which carried a well-curated assortment of designer brands, like The Row and Loewe, and smaller, more affordable French brands, like L/Uniform for great bags. Then we finally made our way back to the hotel to meet our friends who had just arrived from Capri.

10 a.m.: Enjoy a leisurely morning at the hotel

We took our time this morning and indulged in a perfect breakfast, complete with fresh breads and cakes, the best charcuterie in the southwest, fresh fruit from Cocotte, a local legend at the Ferret farmers’ market, and granola and honey from the basin. After breakfast, we spread out across the property on the outdoor deck chairs and hammocks to catch up on some work before lunch at the iconic Restaurant Chez Hortense ( 26 Av. Du Sémaphore ).

Noon: Have a scene-y lunch at Chez Hortense

Two of us walked to lunch, which took 30 minutes as we cut across some scenic little beaches on the bay side, while the other two biked over using the bikes provided by the hotel, taking them roughly ten minutes. It felt like anyone who’s anyone on Cap Ferret was having lunch at Chez Hortense, so be sure to reserve at least a month in advance if you can. It’s set on a shaded outdoor terrace covered in vines and greenery with views overlooking the bay. It’s a nice crowd because it’s a mix of locals, friends, and families, yet it’s not rowdy, just really warm and fun. It was already super busy when we arrived for our 12:30 reservation and we ordered a pretty substantial amount. Oysters, the fish of the day, shrimp, and mussels and fries, paired with a couple of bottles of white wine. We polished it off with a round of dessert: some strawberries and cream and homemade ice cream.

3 p.m.: Hit the beach before the rain

After lunch, we made our way around the back of the restaurant and walked left toward the quiet beaches on the bay that we had discovered on the walk over to lunch (these beaches don’t have names, but you can’t miss them). We found a spot with a direct view of the Dune du Pilat and hung out at the beach before the rain came. As luck would have it, the rain lasted as long as it took us to run and bike home, and when we arrived, the sun was out on our little deck at Hotel des Dunes. We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the hammocks and taking in the final hours of sun before dinner.

8 p.m.: Enjoy a change of palate for dinner

The super-friendly staff at the hotel had booked us a reservation at Mayzou ( 32 Av. Nord du Phare ), a ten-minute walk from the hotel. Mayzou serves international cuisine and has a menu that changes daily depending on the fishing or harvest of their local suppliers. While we were loving our oyster-filled week, it was nice to try some new flavors. We ordered almost everything on the menu that day, which included pulled lamb tacos, tuna tataki, burrata and bottarga, tomato salad and anchovies, zucchini fritters, Japanese-style oysters, hong shao eggplant, Persian rice ,and popcorn chicken with spicy mayo. Everything had so much flavor and really hit the spot.

9 a.m.: Wake up early for a morning market run

I’m an early bird so after my early morning breakfast at the hotel, I took a stroll over to the Cap Ferret market ( Av. Du Monument Saliens ) as they were just setting up. The market sells crafts from woven basket bags and lamps to linen clothing by local vendors, as well as fresh fish and local wine. One of my friends biked over to meet me when they got up and we perused the market, restocking on some good linen finds before heading back to the hotel for our last day here.

11:30 a.m.: Spend a final beach day on the basin

When I got back to the hotel, my friends had just finished eating breakfast and we walked over to Plage du banc du Mimbeau ( Av. de la Conche ) on the bay side since it was right by our lunch reservation. It was an especially warm day, so we spent the afternoon in the water, swimming to the sandbar that forms when the tide is high.

1:30 p.m.: Take in another oyster lunch before checking out

When it was time for lunch, we walked a few steps to Chai Bertrand ( 48 Quartier des Pecheurs ) for yet another tasting of oysters, shrimp, snails, and white wine. After lunch, we walked back to the hotel and packed up, then Karine offered to drive us to the port in the hotel jeep.

4 p.m.: Check in to a new hotel in Arcachon

We boarded the boat shuttle to Arcachon and from there called an Uber to Villa du Pyla ( 4 Av. du Figuier ), located in Pyla-Sur-Mer, a small seaside town just outside of Arcachon that sits between Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat. Villa du Pyla is a cozy guesthouse-style hotel on the beach, featuring 18 suites, each with kitchenettes and balconies or private patios. We relaxed on the beach for a few more hours of sun, then did some work from our balconies before dinner.

Villa du Pyla

8 p.m.: Bask in a sunset dinner overlooking Dune du Pilat

We had the concierge call us a cab to take us to our dinner reservation at Hotel Restaurant La Co(o)rniche ( 46 Av. Louis Gaume ), the most famous hotel in the area, known for its insane views of Dune du Pilat, which sits just 4.5 kilometers away from the property. We grabbed drinks at the bar while waiting for our table and took tons of photos of the sunset overlooking the dunes and the bay before sitting down to dinner. We ordered a round of oysters and snails, followed by fresh fish of the day, which was a sea bass.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

10 a.m.–1 p.m.: Begin our boat day around Arcachon Bay

In the morning, a breakfast basket with a fresh baguette and other baked goods and fruit and yogurt was delivered to our door. We ate on the balcony overlooking the beach and got ready for our boat day on Arcachon Bay. We took a cab to the meeting point in the harbor at Rue de Marins and met up with the crew of Des Hommes et Des Mers . We booked a full six-hour day to really take advantage and see everything we wanted to (but you can also book three- or four-hour days). Des Hommes et Des Mers has the option of two boats, a smaller classic boat, called L’Empreinte (fits up to 12 people), built on the basin for the basin, which allows you to get as close as possible to the villages and the most inaccessible places, and a larger boat, L’Embrun (fits up to 15 people), which is a catamaran for larger groups. We started our journey on the basin checking out the famous stilt houses, “Les Cabanes Tchanquées,” an emblem of the basin located on L’ile aux Oiseaux, which were originally built for monitoring oyster parks. We then made our way closer to the Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula and cruised along the shores of the various little fishing villages until reaching one of the most famous: L’Herbe.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

2 p.m.: Visit L’Herbe for lunch, then go for a swim

We descended onto the beach of L’Herbe and walked up through the village, passing a few dégustation shacks until stopping for lunch at one called Kykouyou ( Av. de L’Herbe ). After lunch, we made our way through the charming, narrow backstreets of L’Herbe, exploring the village and its colorful fishing homes. We made our way back onto the boat and decided it was time to swim. We anchored at a beach that sits between Plage de la Vigne and La Plage des Américains for an hour of swimming before jumping back on and heading to the point where the bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, called “La Passe,” which is very dangerous to cross, depending on the swell and wind conditions, but we wanted to feel the strength of the current, so we jumped into the water and swam a bit against the wild and majestic backdrop of the dune. Wasn’t an easy swim, so only recommended for strong swimmers!

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

5 p.m.: Climb the Dune du Pilat and visit a secret sandbank

We then cruised over to the dune and actually managed to climb up partway. It was a pretty insane workout, and the views were wild. When we got back on the boat, our captain, Patrick, wanted to show us one more spot: a famous sandbank that sits in front of the Dune du Pilat that only appears for a few hours in the evening, called “Le Banc d’Arguin.” We were the first to arrive just as it was beginning to poke out from the water, and it was magical. We ran around and took in the 360-degree views of the bay just as the sun was beginning to set. Finally, because of the tides, Patrick was able to drop us right on the beach we were staying on, so we rolled onto the beach and straight into our hotel rooms.

8 p.m.: Enjoy a steak dinner

After so much seafood, we were craving classic bistro food, so we went to dinner at Café Ha(a)itza ( 312 Bd de l’Océan ), a brasserie at Hotel Ha(a)itza (our hotel helped us make the reservation the night before). It’s the same owners as La Co(o)rniche, but feels a bit more casual. We were ready for a change of pace from seafood, so we ordered a round of steaks and fries.

2 p.m.: Make an impromptu pit stop in Bordeaux

Two of our friends left for Ibiza that morning and my friend Anny and I got a cab to the Arcachon train station to travel back to Paris. We were on a direct train back to Paris, but when a train delay had us held up for 15 minutes in Bordeaux, we spontaneously decided to get off and finish out the weekend there! It was already the evening at this point, so we sat at the train-station café while we sorted out a place to stay.

5 p.m.: Check in to a charming hotel, then eat dinner at a southwest institution

We booked a last-minute stay at Maison La Course ( 69 Rue de la Course ), a former family home set within a 19th-century mansion around the corner from the hip Chartrons neighborhood. It has just five rooms, so we lucked out as they had a cancellation. The intimate nature of the home gives it a guesthouse feel with a few cozy communal spaces, like the lounge with a fireplace, kitchen, and tasting room (should you wish to book a tasting). There’s also a spa that we didn’t get around to checking out.

Maison La Course

Once we settled in, we aimlessly walked around the city, making our way to the iconic La Tupina ( 6 Rue Porte de la Monnaie ) for dinner, known for its upscale southwestern comfort food. The crowd was a bit too touristy for our taste, but the food was solid and the service was super friendly. We ordered the macaronade de cèpes et foie gras (its signature rigatoni with crème fraîche, mushrooms, bacon, and foie gras sauce) and Chateaubriand beef filet with bone marrow — we really went for it … we were hungry! We loved the local red wine our waiter suggested, from Chateau de Parenchere .

11 a.m.: Walk around the Chartrons neighborhood

As it was Sunday, most things were closed (whoops!), but we still enjoyed strolling around the Chartrons neighborhood (I knew some places already as I had visited Bordeaux earlier in the summer with friends and expert tour guide Yolanda Edwards , who has a house in the Medoc). We picked up sandwiches at La P’tite Boulangerie Notre Dame ( 62 Rue Notre Dame ) for our stroll around the neighborhood before heading back to the hotel to catch up on some work.

6 p.m.: Have a final dinner in Bordeaux

In the evening, we wanted to go for a glass of wine and some salted anchovies at Motto Bar ( 33 Rue Piliers de Tutelle ), a hi-fi music bar, but we realized it was closed on Sundays, so we’ll save that for next time! Just next door, there was a place that looked great called Soif ( 35 Rue du Cancera ), which serves a seasonal menu of small plates, so we popped in there for dinner. We ordered the mussels, a really interesting tomato salad with crunch, and the beef dish they were serving that day. We paired the meal with some really good natural wines from the region; I loved my Merlot from Chateau Brandeau. We finished the meal with some local cheese, a brioche perdu, which is basically a fancy French toast, and, of course, some cognac! It was a perfect last meal before our two-hour train back to Paris in the morning.

Monica’s Arcachon Bay packing list

Attersee The Oversized Shirt

I love Attersee for elevated basics. The oversize shirt is a chic, lightweight piece for a coastal getaway. I wore it open to the beach and buttoned up at night.

Paravel Weekender

I never travel without my Paravel Weekender bag, but it was especially clutch on this trip. It has smart straps that slip over the trolley of your carry-on suitcase and a zipper for seamless lugging through unpaved roads and cobbled streets. Nothing spilling out or falling over, and it fits way more than it appears.

Tombolo ‘One-in-a-Billion’ for Billion Oyster Project

Tombolo’s One-in-a-Billion for Billion Oyster Project shirt feels like a no-brainer here if you really want to get into the spirit of the trip — I did! It’s silly and fun, and 15 percent of proceeds from the capsule are donated to the Billion Oyster Project to help improve New York’s harbors.

Ciao Lucia Zacchi Pant Shell

I love Ciao Lucia’s Zacchi pant (in white or the more festive shell print). I like to pack clothes that can work double duty, and these do just that. They’re lightweight and easy to transition from the beach to dinner.

Biafine Act Emulsion Cream

Of course, I don’t travel without SPF, but something less obvious that I don’t travel without is a tube of Biafine , a French pharmacy product that has proven extremely useful to treat sunburns (or sun rashes) for when you miss a spot with the SPF!

10 Best Things to do in Cap-Ferret, France

10 Best Things to do in Cap-Ferret, France

Au Ferret! If you’re looking for a beach town with a relaxed vibe yet all the luxuries you want at hand, Cap-Ferret is the place to be. It’s situated on the tip of a peninsula on the west coast of France. With 50km of coastline, remote Atlantic beaches, fresh seafood and local wines, Cap-Ferret feels like true paradise. It's perfect for a weekend escape.

Our travel guide includes the 10 best things to do in Cap-Ferret, where to stay, the best time to visit and how to get to Cap-Ferret.

How to get to Cap-Ferret

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Best time to visit Cap-Ferret

The best time to visit Cap-Ferret is during beach weather! This is from June-September, when there is the least amount of rainfall and temperatures are around 24-27 °C.

Where to stay in Cap-Ferret

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hôtel Côté Sable **** (@cotesable_capferret)

When looking for accommodation, choose a place that is close to Boulevard de la Plage. You will have close access to beaches, restaurants and shops. Don’t book a place in Arcachon by mistake that is across the water! It also has a boulevard with the same name.

10 Best Things to do in Cap-Ferret

1. Walk the Atlantic coastline and go for a swim in the baïne

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

One of the best things to do is walk the peninsula. Start at the western side and work your way down towards to the tip. Make sure you go at low tide! That way you can easily walk the grandiose sand beaches and swim in the baïnes. A baïne is a tidal pool hundreds of meters in length created by the tide and waves from the ocean. It’s a nice calm contrast to the wild ocean that runs parallel. We first swam in the baïne to warm us up to jumping into the Atlantic!

2. Eat fresh oysters and drink French white wine

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Oysters in Cap-Ferret

Once you are done your beach walk, satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst with some fresh seafood and cold dry white wine. Cap-Ferret is known as the oyster capital of France and its oysters are considered some of best in the world. We highly recommend eating at Chez Boulon for lunch. We sat on the patio and the seafood was oh so fresh.

3. Have a champagne picnic on the beach and watch the sunset

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Sunset picnic on the beach in Cap-Ferret

The Atlantic ocean is wild and beautiful at sunset. There is no better place for a beach picnic. First stop in at the grocery store to get appies to accompany your champagne. There are wooden produce crates in front of the grocery store you can grab to use as your picnic table. Next, walk to the western side of the peninsula to find a remote spot to have your picnic. Don't forget a blanket and garbage bag!

We sat on the beach for hours while drinking champagne, eating cheese, crackers, and meats. The sunset over the vast Atlantic was picture perfect. There are many old eroding and graffitied WWII Bunkers alongside the beach you can sit in front of.

Top tip: To cool your champagne quickly, fill up a good quality plastic shopping bag with salt water from the sea. Then dump a bag or two of ice inside before submerging your champagne to cool. Dig a small pit for it in the sand to keep it upright. Salt lowers the freezing point of water, in effect, chilling your bubbly faster!

4. Keep the party going at Bar Le Tchanque

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

After your champagne picnic, stop in at Bar Le Tchanque , a cocktail bar that was once frequented by Ernest Hemingway. It has a fun atmosphere and is a great spot to drink cocktails, eat small bites and listen to some tunes.

5. Shop the Cap Ferret Market

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

This isn't a flea market, it's a Ferret market. Loads of vendors pack a parking lot selling fashionable products , such as colourful beach blankets, beautifully patterned dresses, linen shirts, housewares, and local food and wine. I couldn't resist taking away two colourful dresses (priced at 35 Euros each), and a colourful beach blanket. Ari got a nice white linen shirt that will also serve well in Italy.

The market is open everyday from 8 AM - 1 PM from mid-June to mid-September. In the off season it is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

6. Bike to the quaint town of L’Herbe for lunch

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Biking to L'Herbe for lunch

Cap-Ferret has a network of bike trails stretching over 100 km! Rent some bikes and explore the forested peninsula.

We biked to the quaint town of L’Herbe to eat lunch. The beautiful fishing village is filled with colourful historic houses and seaside restaurants. Enjoy some more ocean fresh shrimp, oysters, and cold dry white wine.

7. Dine at the seafood restaurant L’Escale

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Take a stroll down to the lagoon side of the peninsula and eat a wonderful dinner at the 50-year old seafood restaurant L’Escale . The setting is romantic along the ocean.

8. Treat yourself to a Clarins spa treatment at Cote Sable

Unwind at Spa by Clarins at the Cote Sable boutique hotel. Destress in the hammam, take a soak in the jacuzzi and relax with a massage or facial.

9. Go Surfing

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Cap-Ferret is popular with surfers. Grab a rental or take a surf lesson at the Tutti Fruti Surf School . Popular surf spots are l'Horizon and La Pointe.

10. Have a refreshing Bali bowl on a hot summer's day

It can get really hot during summertime in Cap-Ferret. Cool off with a delicious smoothie bowl for lunch from Bali Bowls . The vegan cafe is proudly plastic free. Their açai bowl was delicious! It was topped with fresh fruit, coconut flakes and chia seeds.

We once heard visitors in Paris saying that the French are not the most welcoming people. It made us sad. That's why we started this blog! So you can get the best information for your travel to France! Of course, we love Paris. We have lived in multiple areas, from Canal St Martin to right next to the Eiffel Tower. We also explore regions of France whenever we can. Our favorites for a weekend away from Paris are Etretat and Mont Saint Michel. The many sandy beaches, some overlooking the reviving waters of the ocean, some the calm waters of the bay; the beautiful and wild headland of Le Cap-Ferret, a listed protected natural site; the splendid villas nestled under the pines; typical oyster villages such Piraillan, Canon and L'Herbe, where it's good to take a stroll and enjoy a fresh oyster platter on the terrace; the shops, cafes, restaurants, markets and entertainment Le Cap-Ferret... All these attractions are the hallmark of the famous Gironde peninsula!

Near the Bélisaire Pier, from April to late September, you can take the scenic train from Le Cap-Ferret, a most enjoyable way to reach the beautiful ocean beach of L'Horizon...

Open to the public, the lighthouse of Le Cap-Ferret, with a spiral staircase of 258 steps, offers a magnificent panoramic view of the peninsula, Arcachon Bay, the famous Dune of Pilat and the ocean from its platform. An interactive exhibition on the history of the lighthouse, the evolution of marine mapping and navigation methods completes the tour.

That said, surfing is an early riser's sport , so be prepared to put on your wetsuit bright and early.

4 -  Rent a Mehari and explore the area

If you don’t want to miss out on any of Cap Ferret’s magnificent landscapes , we recommend you rent a Citröen-Méhari , either vintage or electric, and lead an expedition across the region’s dirt roads ! Lège-Cap-Ferret centre

I f you prefer being in the heart of the action , you’ll certainly enjoy the village of Lège-Cap-Ferret , with its beautiful main street, its refined shops , and its many cafés and restaurants . The village centre gathers all the city’s pleasures on the waterfront , making it the perfect haunt for teenagers and young adults . Let the eldest enjoy a drink on the terrace while the young take their first independent steps by heading off alone to buy an ice cream at Sorbet d’Amour.

Les américains.

A couple hundred metres from the Bélisaire Pier , this area owes its name to the eponymous beach . A haven of peace on Arcachon Bay , perfectly seated facing the Dune of Pilat and the Cap Ferret peninsula , Les Américains beach was christened by the US Navy during World War I. Now dotted with large family villas , it's perfect for young children , who will only have to take a few steps to spend their day on the sand! That said, keep an eye out for the oyster beds nearby.

Villa Omnia

La vigne, l’herbe, and le canon.

La Vigne , l'Herbe and le Canon are three oyster-farming villages neighbouring Lège-Cap-Ferret. Though smaller, they are no less charming, punctuated by pretty fishermen's huts and ravishing flower-filled streets . Plage de la Vigne is particularly well suited to young children who’ll be able to splash around in complete safety thanks to the supervised swimming. In the evening, night life is in full swing with some of Cap Ferret’s trendiest bars and restaurants !

Villa Opaline

Villa Opaline

Divided between the villages of Petit Piquey and Grand Piquey , Piquey is the perfect blend of city-centre and unspoilt nature . Built around a small dune covered in a lush pine forest, this commercial sector houses many shops and restaurants, but also magnificent beaches accessible right from the village. Of these, many consider Pointe aux Chevaux beach to be the most beautiful in Cap Ferret.

"> In a nutshell Lively / Unspoilt nature

voyage holiday shop cap ferret mimbeau beach.

Perhaps Cap Ferret’s most emblematic beach , Mimbeau Beach stretches from Lège-Cap-Ferret’s lighthouse out to La Pointe in one long ribbon of white sand facing Arcachon Bay . Thanks to its calm waters and idyllic landscape , it’s the perfect setting for family holidays with young children . It’s also the perfect starting point for boat trips !

"> In a nutshell Bay / Peninsula

"> Petit Train Beach

Also called Horizon Beach , this beach is named in reference to Cap Ferret’s small train , a stunning vintage locomotive dating back to the 1880s! To reach the beach, you’ll have to climb to the top of the dune along the duckboards , but it’s well worth the effort. Sun, white sand, and an endless panorama of the Atlantic Ocean await on the other side. Here, learn to surf and have fun between the waves in total safety thanks to supervised swimming areas.

"> In a nutshell Ocean / Family-friendly

"> Sail Fish Beach

More wild than Horizon , Sail Fish Beach is the other main oceanfront beach in Cap Ferret . Also hidden behind a dune, it reveals a preserved panoramic view over the open ocean and the warm sand . Here, you won’t find the many beach cabanas like on Petit Train Beach, but you’ll meet highly skilled surfers ready to take on the waves!

"> In a nutshell Wild / Surfing

"> B anc d’Arguin

Only accessible via boat , Banc d’Arguin is a marine marvel in the middle of Arcachon Bay . At the foot of the Dune of Pilat and facing Cap Ferret’s point, this natural reserve is a paradise for birds, with the bay on one side and the ocean on another . Very popular in summer, unofficial tradition would have it you dock your boat here and savour a picnic with a view!

voyage holiday shop cap ferret chez hortense, the unbeatable.

If there’s one restaurant in Cap Ferret to visit, we strongly recommend stopping in at the historic Chez Hortense . A family-run establishment, perfectly located at the heart of the 44 hectares and facing the Dune of Pilat , Chez Hortense has attracted locals and celebrities for generations. However, don’t expect any fanfare here; savour delicious cuisine made up of seafood and fresh fish in a no-frills environment.

Chez Hortense Avenue du Sémaphore, 33970 Lège-Cap-Ferret

"> La cabane du Mimbeau

Locals will tell you that it’s impossible to visit Cap Ferret without sharing a platter of oysters fresh from the Bay seated by the water, preferably washed down with white wine in a fisherman’s hut . Among the peninsula’s many oyster shacks , our favourite is la Cabane du Mimbeau , with its colourful terrace. Be prepared though, we're not the only fans of its guinguette spirit, so it's best to book in advance !

"> La Cabane du Mimbeau 28 Avenue de la Conche, 33970 Lège-Cap-Ferret

A new venture in the Cap Ferret landscape, Java is the latest undertaking by Arthur Vonderheyden and Pierre Deleume , creators of Gigi in Bordeaux . Perfectly located at la Pointe , facing the Dune of Pilat , Java is a meeting point for epicureans where the chef trained under Joël Robuchon . Here, you can travel between Japanese, Oriental, and Mediterranean influences , and enjoy an extraordinary selection of wines !

La Java 41 Avenue E, 33970 Lège-Cap-Ferret

Mere steps away from Mimbeau Beach , Mayzou blows a refreshing breeze over Cap Ferret . Decorated in natural materials and neutral tones with cuisine by Juliette Lacroix , this restaurant makes the most of fresh, local, and seasonal produce . We recommend you share a plate of the homemade “tapiasettes” paired with a signature cocktail.

At once a restaurant , bakery , and ice cream shop , Frédélian is our favourite address in the heart of Lège-Cap-Ferret, delighting young and old with a delicious breakfast on the terrace after pursuing the market or with an afternoon snack after the beach ! Completely renovated in 2022 by chef Jean-François Feuillette , this local institution has reclaimed its art deco aura in homage to the original 1940s-era Frédélian. A bonus? The new terrace offers a magnificent view over the Dune of Pilat .

"> Climb to the top of the Dune of Pilat

Like a rite of passage , climbing up the Dune of Pilat is a must-do for children in Cap Ferret . It’s easiest to take a boat from Cap Ferret and drop your anchor near the shore beside the tallest dune in Europe ! Don’t forget to bring a water bottle, sunhat, and plenty of sunscreen , because you’ll have to earn the view. Once you reach the top, it’ll certainly be worth the effort: the panorama of the ocean on one side and pine forest as far as the eye can see on the other will leave you all awe-struck !

Food & drink

A taste of cap ferret.

This being France, restaurants can be tourist attractions in their own right, not least Chez Hortense in Cap Ferret and Philippe Starck’s curiously named La Co(o)rniche in Pyla, but there’s no shortage of waterfront venues, sophisticated menus complemented by sea views and informal service. This is a region famous for its seafood – oysters in particular – which you can sample in the cabanes and restaurants of the villages ostréicoles . Piraillan, L’Herbe and Le Canon are among the most well-known, but there are others, including Claouey where the local fishmongers are renowned for offering unpretentious advice.

Cap Ferret has both a chic outdoor market and a fabulous fresh food hall. Loud and lively, it’s an unbeatable place for people-watching as well as shopping, with mouth-watering aromas guiding you round its colourfully chaotic aisles. Stalls selling organic produce pop up in Le Moulleau from the first Tuesday in July to the last in August and in Piraillan and Arcachon, there are covered food markets, Les Halles, brimful of local produce. You can also stop there for coffee or a tasty lunch. And, of course, there are pastries galore: try canelés , traditionally made with the egg yolks left over from the port and wine-making process, or dames blanches, gorgeous little choux pastries with cream, icing sugar & sugar crystals.

Cap Ferret tipples

Being near Bordeaux, producer of some of the finest wines in the world, brings a certain je ne sais quoi to the wine lists, although you can try wine tasting with a couple of local producers around Arcachon. For oysters, a glass of the local crisp Sauvignon Blanc is a delicious accompaniment, although bubbles are a popular alternative or even stout. If you’re planning to barbecue, grab a bottle or two of clairet rosé: summer in a glass.

For evening drinks with atmosphere, choose one of the lifeguarded beaches on the Atlantic coast which have summer beach shacks serving sundowners – a pleasure for parents in particular who can watch their offspring playing on the sand nearby.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Lined with oyster cabanes and home to the ever-popular Club Mickey du Phare, full to bursting with games and activities for children aged three to 12, you can spend a day effortlessly on this family-friendly beach.

Getting there…

Head towards Cap Ferret’s Boulevard de la Plage.

Footnotes…

For a slightly less lively stretch of sand in Cap Ferret, try the smaller Plage des Americains.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Plage de l’Horizon

The peninsula’s west coast is blessed with one uninterrupted, unspoilt stretch of golden sand, with lifeguards present from June to September on three named beaches. This is the nearest of the three to Cap Ferret.

A five-minute drive from town, it’s accessible via a boardwalk over the dunes in typical Aquitaine style – or take the child-friendly ‘little train’ from Cap Ferret jetty.

Indulge in a sunset picnic, watching the surfers catching a few final waves with the evening light sparkling on the sea.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Plage du Truc Vert

The second of the west coast’s lifeguarded beaches and, at low tide, families have the pleasure of a toddler-friendly tidal pool in addition to the surfer-friendly waves, considered some of the area’s best.

Near Piraillan and a ten-minute drive from Cap Ferret, the beach is accessible via the Avenue du Truc Vert, along a lovely forest walk up and over the dune.

After an invigorating dip, you can buy all the necessary refreshments from the popular café-cabane on the beach.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Plage de Bertic

Being next to the oyster village of Claouey, with its shops and daily market, this child-friendly stretch has the added advantage of fresh seafood lunches a short stroll away, as well as its own cafés.

Plage de Bertic is a 20-minute drive from Cap Ferret.

From July to September, children can enjoy the pine-shaded play space of the beach’s Club Baloo, with its swings, trampolines, games and workshops, plus a heated pool for swimming lessons.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Visit in the morning to see the splendid beachfront villas bathed in sunshine. This is also the perfect beach hangout once you’ve explored the colourful oyster village.

You’ll find easy access through the village, which is about 10 minutes by car from Cap Ferret.

Don’t miss the waterfront Chapelle de la Villa Algérienne at the southern end of the Boulevard de la Plage, built for both Muslims and Christians.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

Plage Thiers

Divided in two by the retro-style Thiers pier, a popular sunset spot, this is Arcachon’s main beach and a section of the 7km of fine sand on offer to local sun worshippers.

Extending along the Boulevard de la Plage, between piers Eyrac and Thiers, the beach is right in front of the town itself.

There’s plenty to do if you get beach fatigue, with the Palais de Congres, a casino, Château Deganne and the Aquarium Museum nearby.

A dream for tiny tots and bordered by a pedestrian promenade, this picturesque 3km beach has blissfully calm waters and sand banks for play at low tide, as well as sea breezes fit for kite and wind surfing at the southerly end.

Getting there…

About a five-minute drive from Arcachon centre, the beach stretches from the town to the jetty at Le Moulleau.

The centre of the beach backs on to the Parc Pereire for shady walks out of the hot summer sun.

Plage du Moulleau

For little feet, the soft white sand and paddling potential make this beach an excellent choice, that’s made even better by the trampolines, toys and games of the children’s club.

The beach runs the length of Moulleau. You can get a boat here from Cap Ferret.

Waterfront restaurants, boutiques and cafés make this a chic and vibrant spot to slip fully into holiday mode, with boat trips also on offer from the jetty.

Le Petit Nice

Corniche beach lies at the foot of the majestic Dune du Pilat, but to the south, opposite the Banc d'Arguin, is this lovely tucked-away alternative with several restaurants and a picnic area.

The drive is about 90 minutes from Cap Ferret or 20 minutes from Arcachon and you can also get a boat to the dune from both.

French fries rarely taste as good as in this idyllic spot and if there’s any diet-related guilt, work off the excess with a climb to the top of the dune for sunset.

Go oyster tasting

The oyster beds are passed down through the generations and if you visit one of the farming villages for a tasting, you may well be served by one of the family. Informal cabanes and more upmarket restaurants set the scene for these fresh-from-the-sea delicacies.

Climb the lighthouse

Get your bearings from the top of the Phare du Cap Ferret: 258 steps of time well spent for the views across to the Banc d'Arguin wildlife reserve and Dune du Pilat. On summer weekend evenings, it’s also an atmospheric venue for free outdoor concerts.

Take to the cycle trails

Two wheels can take you all the way from Cap Ferret to Arcachon – 190km along the coast – but shorter forays along the pine forest trails offer welcome respite from the sun and hiring a bike, electric or otherwise, is never a challenge.

Learn how to surf

South of the Dune du Pilat near Arcachon, and along stretches of the Atlantic coast, the impressive waves offer an open invitation to surfers and bodyboarders. Lessons and equipment hire can be arranged in Cap Ferret.

See sunrise over the Dune du Pilat

In 1855, Europe’s largest sand dune was 35m high; now it’s 110m. Steps take you up to the summit of this otherworldly landscape, overlooking dense forests and the sand island of Banc d’Arguin that seems to float above the water. At dawn it’s magical.

Picnic on the Banc d'Arguin

In July and August boat trips from Cap Ferret or Arcachon will whisk you away to this protected nature reserve, a sand bank that’s constantly changing shape due to the wind and currents. Take food, shade and sun block and leave only footprints.

Tour Arcachon's Ville d'Hiver

See how the other half live in this luxurious melting pot of Moorish, Neo-Gothic and Colonial-style architecture, built in the 1800s to allow residents to benefit from the therapeutic air. A little train or guided walking tour will take you around.

Sail around 'Bird Island'

This fascinating boat trip from Arcachon includes L’Île aux Oiseaux, a feeding ground for migrating sea birds, and the famous cabanes tchanquées , two picturesque wooden houses on stilts above the water, once used by oyster farmers.

Go adventuring together

Bassin Aventures near Arcachon is a gift for families with climbing walls, tree-top walkways, zip wires and playgrounds for all ages – and you can stay all day with a well-stocked café  ( www.bassinaventures.com ). Alternatively try the accrobranche high ropes centre in Petit Piquey on the Cap Ferret Peninsula.

Cap Ferret Cup 2, 22 September

A surfing and bodyboarding competition (the first of the year is held in May) that’s open to everyone and held on Cap Ferret’s Plage de l’Horizon from 9am to 5pm.

A table with a view

Chez Hortense is a Cap Ferret institution – the place for ultra-fresh, perfectly-prepared seafood; accompanied by copious quantities of frites and a little drop of what you fancy. The best chance of a table is a visit at midday. The views across the bay to the Dune du Pilat are to die for and the impeccable table manners of the French children will leave you weeping into your rosé.

Sweet local treats

In the Arcachon Bay they like to do things a little differently, and for sugary tea-time beach snacks, the locals have a few delicate treats up their sleeve. Macaroons are taken to a new level of colourful artistry, whilst the tiny caramelised custard canelés are utterly exquisite. And for a taste of heaven try the Dunes Blanches unique to Chez Pascal - little clouds of choux pastry, filled with whipped cream and topped with icing sugar and sugar crystals.

Live by the rhythm of the tides

Every 12 hours or so an astonishing 400 to 800 cubic metres of water passes in and out of the Bay of Arcachon. Oyster-farmers go with the flow, allowing tide tables to guide their daily activities and we think living by the rhythm of the tides is the perfect way to plan a day here. On the ocean side, low tide is a time for pottering in the flats, building sandcastles and playing in the tidal pools. Bay-side, high tide is the time for swimming, paddle-boarding and oyster-tasting at a beach-side shack with the water lapping at your feet.

Two Notre Dames and a Moorish Chapel

The Bay boasts two Notre Dames, both with breath-taking stained-glass windows yet architecturally entirely different. Arcachon-style Notre Dame des Passes above Le Moulleau gazes over to the modernist masterpiece of Notre Dames des Flots on the opposite shore in Cap Ferret. The Villa Algérienne in l’Herbe is a delight, both for its colourful architecture and its unique story as a place of worship for Christians and Muslims alike.

Life in the Autumn Town

Arcachon is well known for its Ville d’Hiver, a district of ornate late 19th century mansions, while the beaches and seafront restaurants of its summer town, the Ville d’Eté, are never overlooked. But for a taste of local life, head over to the Ville d’Automne and its chief district l’Aiguillon. This charming port-side area, favoured by locals for its boutiques and authentic bistros, is a wonderful spot to enjoy the menus du jour - ridiculously good value for lunch - and afterwards take a stroll around the marina and marvel at the luxurious yachts and cruisers.

voyage holiday shop cap ferret

The epitome of beach chalet chic, Cap Ferret is an authentically French resort. Elegant home accessories stores and ‘be seen in’ cafés sit alongside the boutiques, surf school and bike rentals of the main Boulevard de la Plage and restaurants are signposted on every corner. You’ll also find treats at the daily market, fresh oysters in the quartier ostréicole and a fine layer of sand in your hire car when it’s time to leave, because this is laid-back beach life at its finest.

Le Canon & L'Herbe

Two of the most high-profile villages ostréicoles , and close neighbours, the presence of farming machinery as well as flowers and stylish waterfront restaurants testify to the fact that these beautiful villages have function as well as form. Le Canon’s oyster quarter is blessed with a particularly photogenic main street, while L’Herbe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which features the grand Hotel de la Plage, a fine example of Cap Ferret architecture, with a casual outside seating area for drinks.

30 minutes from Cap Ferret

Near the Arès Salt Marshes, an excellent spot for turtle and lizard spotting, this thriving oyster village has the toddler-friendly Plage de Bertic right on its doorstep, home to the children’s club Baloo. With little ones entertained, an indulgent massage at the nearby Domaine du Ferret Balnéo & Spa becomes an inviting option – if a walk along the coastal path, tennis or a SUP session don’t distract you first. On a practical note, you’ll find the peninsula’s largest supermarket here too.

90 minutes from Cap Ferret (30 minutes by ferry or water taxi)

Variety is the spice of life in Arcachon, from the Ville d’Hiver’s magnificent quirkiness to the vast 1960s marina, with a waiting list for moorings of 30 years. The Thiers jetty is a social focal point and the starting point for boat trips, whilst the recently modernised shopping district has its own selection of bars and restaurants. From there, you can also take the lift to the peaceful 19 th -century Park Mauresque, its observatory designed by Eiffel and offering impressive views across the bassin.

Pyla & Le Moulleau

90 minutes (30 minutes by ferry or water taxi)

Although they’re considered part of multi-faceted Arcachon, these two areas have their own identity, the former known best for the towering Dune du Pilat and various exclusive, leafy neighbourhoods. Smart Le Moulleau, built around a cross roads, is a popular night spot with a bijou collection of bars and restaurants. It’s presided over by the impressive Notre Dame des Passes church, but you may prefer to turn your devotions towards the organic food market, ice-cream parlours, upmarket boutiques or a surf school.
