PARIS BEACH PRO TOUR

The Paris Beach Pro Tour is an Elite 16 stage of the world beach volleyball circuit: the Beach Pro Tour. But the Paris Beach Pro Tour is much more than that, it is the world elite of beach volleyball competing in an iconic place (Roland-Garros stadium) and in a festival atmosphere, unique and specific to beach volleyball.

background

World elite

The Paris Beach Pro Tour brings together the 16 best male and female pairs in the world. World champions and Olympic champions compete for four days to win one of the most prestigious stages of the Beach Pro Tour.

The presence of the French teams is ensured thanks to a wild-card system.

A unique atmosphere

Beach volleyball is a spectacular sport, both on the court and in the stands. The Paris Beach Pro Tour is no exception and combines sporting competition with the atmosphere of a festival. Music between each point, DJ throughout the competition, entertainment between sets and matches, village with animations on the site of Roland-Garros stadium ... All the elements are gathered to spend a unique and festive moment with friends or family.

Vibrate to the rhythm of the announcer at each match and react to each Ace, Monster Block or Super Spike!  Don't forget: "Make some noise, the players are ready"!

background

An iconic venue

The mythical Roland-Garros stadium, known for hosting one of the four Grand Slam tournaments each year: Roland-Garros. This key venue for French and international sport will be transformed for four days to become the most beautiful beach volleyball site in the world.

This is an opportunity to re-discover the Roland-Garros stadium as you have never seen it before. The Philippe-Chatrier court and 2 other courts will be completely covered with sand for the occasion. A village with animations will also be set up in the immediate vicinity of the Philippe-Chatrier court. The opportunity for you to eat and enjoy various activities (volleyball initiation, partner activations and musical activities...).

Olympic Beach Volleyball Rankings: Bukovec-Bansley make huge jump in Cinderella run

Travis Mewhirter

March 26, 2024

volleyball world beach pro tour paris

The race for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games officially began in February 2023 in Doha, Qatar, with the Volleyball World Elite16. The 2024 season began last week, back in Doha, and the final event of the Olympic qualification cycle will be the Ostrava Elite16, which ends on June 9. We’ll be providing these updates for the Beach Volleyball Olympic rankings throughout the next two years.

Last weekend’s Recife Challenge was a weekend for the dark horses, the underdogs, the pairs making late and urgent pushes up through the Olympic rankings. None more so than Sophie Bukovec and Heather Bansley, the Canadian pair who came together in the middle of last summer, with Bukovec scrambling for a new partner and Bansley coming out of retirement to be that partner. In a stunner of a start to the 2024 season, Bukovec and Bansley began the tournament in the qualifier and ran it all the way to the finals, where they took silver, falling in the finals to Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova, who all but punched their ticket to Paris two weeks ago at the Doha Elite16 . With their 760-point, Bukovec and Bansley jumped from No. 42 to 35, narrowing the gap to Canada’s No. 2, Sarah Pavan and Molly McBain.

For the men, Chase Budinger and Miles Evans, with their fourth-place finish, reduced their deficit to USA No. 2 Trevor Crabb and Theo Brunner to just 340 points. Tri Bourne and Chaim Schalk also gained on Brunner and Crabb with a fifth and are down 880 to Brunner and Crabb.

The next Olympic qualifying event is a Challenge in Saquarema, Brazil that starts with a qualifier Thursday.

Things to know about Olympic Beach qualifying:

  • To qualify for the Olympic Games via the Olympic rankings, teams use their best 12 finishes throughout the Olympic qualifying period, which ends June 9, 2024. The top 17 from the Olympic rankings will punch their tickets to the Paris Olympics. The remaining seven spots are allotted to five continental cup champions, the winner of the 2023 World Championships, and the French wild card.
  • Each country is limited to two teams who can earn a spot in the Olympic Games.
  • Teams can never push out good finishes. Once you hit your 12, you only replace your worst finishes. In parentheses below is the number of events each pair has played.
  • You earn points  as a team.  Therefore, if a team breaks up and the individuals select new partners, they begin with zero Olympic ranking points, although they keep their individual entry points to get into events.

World Beach Volleyball Pro Tour: Race for Paris 2024 tickets at Doha Elite16 from today

Qatar’s Tijan Ahmed in spectacular action during the 2023 Doha Finals of Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour.

The Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour will pick up from where it left after December’s 2023 Finals as Doha is once again set to host the first Elite16 event of 2024 from March 5 to 9 at Al Gharafa.

As the world’s highest-calibre teams get together for the first time after the off-season, it will be exciting to see them in battle for Elite16 honours again, but as usual during the final stages of the Olympic qualification process, a lot of the focus will fall on the race for Paris 2024 tickets.

In each gender, 17 of these tickets will be issued through the Olympic ranking and high-level Beach Pro Tour events offer plenty of precious points towards that ranking. While the teams already placed high in the provisional Olympic rankings can be quite certain of making it among the Paris 2024 participants, it will be most interesting to follow the pairs in the gray area around the cut-off line or the pairs from nations with more than two solid candidates for the maximum of two spots per country.

The season will start and end in Doha, Qatar. The first Elite16 event will take place in the Qatari capital from March 5–9 and the Beach Pro Tour will return for the Finals from December 5–8. March and April will feature two stops in Brazil (Recife from March 20–24 and Saquarema from March 27–31) and two stops in Mexico (Guadalajara from April 10–14 and Tepic from April 17–21).

After the Latin American leg, the Beach Pro Tour will end April with a Challenge event in Xiamen, China, which has hosted World Tour tournaments in the past but will welcome a Beach Pro Tour stop for the first time. Another venue that has hosted many beach volleyball competitions, including the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, Stare Jablonki in Poland appears on the Beach Pro Tour calendar for the first time from May 29 through June 2.

After the Ostrava Elite16 puts the final touches on the Olympic Ranking in June, Elite16 events will also be held at European venues in Gstaad, Switzerland, and Vienna, Austria, in July before the focus turns to the Olympic Games in Paris.

After Hamburg from August 21–25, Canada makes its lone appearance on the 2024 schedule with an event in Montreal from August 28–31. After a nearly two-month break, the final stretch run commences in the fall with Joao Pessoa, Brazil, in October, to India in November and to Nuvali, Philippines, from November 28 through December 1 for the last Challenge stops of the season, before it culminates with December’s Finals in Doha.

Canada's Bansley, Bukovec win silver at Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event in Brazil

Canadian duo falls to latvian pair of samoilova, graudina in final.

Two women's volleyball athletes raise their arms in celebration.

Canada's Heather Bansley and Sophie Bukovec secured a silver medal on Sunday after falling to Latvia in the final at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Recife Challenge tournament in Recife, Brazil.

The No. 12-ranked pair of Anastasija Samoilova and Tina Graudina took gold in two tight sets (21-18, 21-17) over Canada.

The Canadians took down Slovenia and Brazil in the preliminary phase on Saturday before dispatching Germany 2-0 (21-16, 21-11) in the semifinals earlier on Sunday to punch their ticket to the gold-medal match.

Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., and Toronto's Bukovec are Canada's third-highest ranked women's pair, sitting at 39th in the world, with Sunday's silver-medal finish being their best since the Beach Pro Tour Futures Halifax event in September.

The two joined forces in July 2023 after two-time Olympian Bansley, 36, came out of retirement following her quarterfinal exit at the Tokyo Games in 2021 with then-partner Brandie Wilkerson.

  • Canadian beach volleyballers Humana-Paredes, Wilkerson finish with silver in Doha
  • Pavan, McBain earn beach volleyball bronze for 1st international medal as partners

17 Paris Olympic qualification spots remain in both the women's and men's events for this summer, with high-level Beach Pro Tour events offering points toward those rankings.

The Canadian men's pair of Sam Schachter of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Toronto's Dan Dearing, ranked No. 30 in the world, finished fifth in Brazil after falling in the quarterfinals on Saturday to No. 31 Cuba.

Cuba's Noslen Diaz and Jorge Alayo lost to Brazilians Evandro Gonçalves and Arthur Lanci 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) in the final.

Canadians MacNeil, Russell strike gold in Australia

  • More beach volleyball coverage

"We got second place here two years ago, so we felt like we needed to come back and get redemption," said MacNeil to Volleyball Australia. "This is our absolute favourite beach; the people showed up and we're just speechless right now.

"Alex makes my job super easy, he was an absolute monster in today's final and he made my job easy. We're just so grateful."

The 65th-ranked pair also earned a medal this season at the Punta Cana Volleyball Classic in the Dominican Republic in September after falling to the United States in the gold-medal game.

FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2023 preview: Full schedule, format, top stars and how to watch the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier live

Paris 2024

The tournament is returning to Latin America for the first time in two decades with the United States, Brazil and Germany fielding the biggest delegations. Find out who are the top contenders to advance to the gold medal matches to be held in Tlaxcala's iconic bullring and secure quotas for Paris 2024, and how to watch all the action live.

Tokyo 2020 champion Alix Klineman will make her return to the sport at Tlaxcala 2023, four months after giving birth to her first child.

The 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships will be returning to Latin America after 20 years when action gets underway in Tlaxcala, Mexico on Friday 6 October.

Running until 15 October, the tournament will feature 48 men’s and 48 women’s teams with Olympic quotas on the line for the best-ranked pair in each gender.

A total of 216 matches will be played, featuring athletes from up to 40 countries. Four venues will be used, including historic bullrings in Tlaxcala de Xicohtencatl, and its neighbouring cities Apizaco and Huamantla.

USA has the biggest representation with seven women’s and five men's teams. Brazil and Germany have one pair less, followed by Australia, France, the Netherlands, Mexico and Italy who also field large contingents.

Five of the six medallist pairs from the 2022 edition of the competition and 14 past world champions are returning to the tournament. Norway's Anders Mol and Christian Sorum will try to become the first men's team to defend a world title, while Tokyo 2020 champion Alix Klineman is making a comeback as a tournament wildcard, four months after giving birth to her first child.

Find out all you need to know about the competition in our preview, including the top athletes to watch, format and schedule of competition, and what's at stake ahead of Paris 2024 .

2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships: Competition format

The tournament is made up of a preliminary round, a single elimination round and a lucky-loser round.

In the preliminary round , 48 teams from each gender will be split into 12 pools of four teams. Every team will face all three opponents in their pool with the top two ranked teams advancing to the elimination round.

Four teams that rank third in their pools and are the best among the other third-ranked teams will also advance, while the other eight teams will be relegated to the lucky loser round . They will play four matches to decide the last four spots in the elimination round.

The single elimination round consists of the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches. All the medal matches will take place on the final day of competition, 15 October.

Qualifying for Paris 2024 from the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships

The winners of the men's and women's tournaments will each earn a quota for their National Olympic Committees (NOCs) at the 2024 Olympic Games.

As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships: Top athletes and storylines to watch

Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Mol and Sorum were among the six pairs who won medals at the 2022 edition of the global event, in Rome, Italy. This time, the Norwegians have even bigger goals - not only to defend their world title, but to become the first men's pair to win back-to-back titles. Tlaxcala 2023 will mark their third worlds appearance.

Their 2022 rivals - Brazil’s silver medallists Vitor Felipe / Renato Lima and bronze medallists Andre Loyola / George Wanderley - will also be in Mexico, trying to make sure that does not happen.

On the women's side, last year's gold medallists Eduarda 'Duda' Lisboa and Ana Patricia Ramos of Brazil are back, fresh off their victory at the Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 in Paris, France, earlier this month. The 2022 World Championships was their fourth international tournament as partners. The Brazilian duo have become even stronger since, and now enter the competition as world No.1. If they win, it will be Brazil's seventh world title in the women's event.

Last year's silver medallist, Brandie Wilkerson of Canada, returns with a new partner. She started competing with 2019 world champion Melissa Humana-Paredes early in 2023.

Germany's bronze medallists, Cinja Tillmann and Svenja Muller , will also try to upgrade the colour of their medals.

USA's Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss are set to make their worlds debut in 2023 and are already hailed as potential gold medallists. The pair fought a tight final against Duda and Ramos at the Beach Pro Tour on 1 October and are currently ranked second in the world.

Meanwhile, their compatriot Alix Klineman , is set to make one of the most anticipated returns in Mexico. The Tokyo 2020 champion stepped away from beach volleyball in 2021 and gave birth to her first son in June 2023. She and new partner Hailey Harward received a a wildcard for the upcoming tournament.

Other notable names at Tlaxcala 2023 include Spain's Pablo Herrera who is on track to make his 11th straight appearance, going back to his worlds debut in 2003.

Germany's Laura Ludwig and Brazil's Pedro Solberg are two more veterans worth keeping an eye on. Olympic champion Ludwig is set to make her ninth appearance, while Solberg is making his eighth appearance. Both missed the tournament last year.
