From 89 to one: A step-by-step guide to identifying the Masters winner
Golfbet News

Change Text Size
Golfbet and others will spend this week tipping you into a myriad of potential market winners, but Iâm going to start by giving you 88 losers. Donât laugh⌠we went through this process of elimination a year ago and arrived at the eventual champion in Jon Rahm. The trends of recent Masters winners are strong indicators for who will slip on the green jacket next.
So without further adoâŚ
From 89 to 88
Step 1: The betting favorite hasnât won in 19 years. Drama from the beginning as we havenât had this short of a Masters favorite since Tiger Woods was +350 in 2013 (he finished T4), but world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, at +400, is gone right off the bat! He filled this slot a year ago as well and, as we know, did not defend his 2022 green jacket. The last favorite to win was Woods in 2005.
- Eliminated: Scottie Scheffler.
From 88 to 68
Step 2: A Masters debutant hasnât won since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. This could be one of the best debutant classes at Augusta National in some time, led by U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark and European Ryder Cup star Ludvig Ă berg, but history shows theyâll need at least one yearâs worth of experience to fully figure out this place.
- Eliminated: Ludvig à berg, Akshay Bhatia, Wyndham Clark, Eric Cole, Santiago de la Fuente, Nick Dunlap, Austin Eckroat, Ryo Hisatsune, Lee Hodges, Nicolai Højgaard, Stephan Jaeger, Jake Knapp, Christo Lamprecht, Peter Malnati, Denny McCarthy, Grayson Murray, Matthieu Pavon, Adam Schenk, Neal Shipley, Jasper Stubbs.
From 68 to 63
Step 3: No one over age 50 has won the Masters. Having the former champions is a great tradition at Augusta National and we seemingly always have one of them in the mix at some stage, but the older brigade ultimately comes up short over the course of four rounds.
- Eliminated: Fred Couples, Mike Weir, Vijay Singh, Jose Maria Olazabal, Phil Mickelson.
From 63 to 50
Step 4: No player from Austria, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Ireland, Korea, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway or Poland has won the Masters. Carrying your own dreams and expectations at the Masters can be hard enough. Adding an entire nationâs hopes on your shoulders makes it even tougher. While Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) and Adam Scott (Australia) added their countries to the honor roll in the last 11 years, they are exceptions to the rule. (Sorry, Rory!)
- Eliminated: Sepp Straka, Joaquin Niemann, Camilo Villegas, Thorbjorn Olesen, Shane Lowry, Byeong Hun An, Sungjae Im, Si Woo Kim, Tom Kim, Ryan Fox, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Adrian Meronk.
From 50 to 42
Step 5: An incredible 24 of the last 26 winners had a top-30 finish at the Masters under their belt prior to winning at Augusta National. Experience canât be underestimated. Knowing how to get around Augusta National somewhat successfully is key.
- Eliminated: Cam Davis, Stewart Hagestad, Max Homa, Kurt Kitayama, Luke List, Taylor Moore, J.T. Poston, Erik van Rooyen.
From 42 to 30
Step 6: Eight of the last nine champions were first-time Masters winners. While multiple Masters titles used to be more common, the trend of late is expanding the annual championsâ dinner. This is where we lose some huge names, five-time winner Tiger Woods included!
- Eliminated: Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Danny Willett, Tiger Woods.
From 30 to 17
Step 7: You have to be dialed in at the Masters unless you putt unconsciously. Augusta National is a second-shot golf course, and 11 of the last 12 winners ranked inside the top seven in Greens in Regulation in their victory. Seven of the last eight were averaging at least 67.18% of GIR in their season leading into the Masters.
- Eliminated: Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Patrick Cantlay, Nick Taylor, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Min Woo Lee, Cameron Smith.
From 17 to 16
Step 8: The last 12 Masters champions had at least one top 10 in a major championship prior to their win. Until you get in the mix on the back nine Sunday in a major, itâs hard to know how youâll play under the pressure.
- Eliminated: Sam Burns.
From 16 to 11
Step 9: The last 18 Masters champions have started very well with a first-round scoring average of 68.56. With all of them inside the top 11 on the leaderboard after the opening round, it's time to eliminate those without a first-round scoring average in the 60s this season.
- Eliminated: Keegan Bradley, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Lucas Glover, Adam Hadwin.
From 11 to 9
Step 10: Trending counts at Augusta National: 25 of the last 26 winners played â and made the cut â in the Masters prior to their win. Recent Masters success matters, no matter what you do between. Corey Conners came in off a win last year but didnât make the weekend.
- Eliminated: Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners.
From 9 to 8
Step 11: Letâs take that a little deeper: 23 of the last 26 winners were at least T38 or better in the Masters start prior to donning the green jacket. Splitting hairs now, but a T43 the year prior isnât good enough when we get down to the serious business!
- Eliminated: Harris English.
From 8 to 5
Step 12: Seven of the last 10 Masters winners were devoid of significant scar tissue around Augusta National before claiming their win, having four or fewer Masters rounds of 75 or more prior to triumph. Nine of those players were first-time champions, so if you factor in Tiger Woods having just three 75+ rounds before winning his first-ever Masters in 1997, then this gets stronger. The past is catching up with a few players here.
- Eliminated: Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Brooks Koepka
From 5 to 2
Step 13: Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green has been a good indicator for Masters champions. The last 12 winners had gained at least 18 strokes in their previous four measured starts leading into the Masters.
- Eliminated: Tony Finau, Chris Kirk, Sahith Theegala
From 2 to 1
Step 14: With just two players left, we need to get cutthroat. The last five Masters champions all sported Augusta National scoring averages under par prior to their win. They showed a trend towards success. While Cameron Young is coming off a T7 finish last year, his average of 72.67 from six rounds is over par at Augusta.
- Eliminated: Cameron Young.
After all that we are left with just one player. The next Masters champion will be +1600 option Xander Schauffele.
Youâre welcome.

PEOPLE's 24 Hour Food Tour: Philadelphia
Exactly where to eat in Philadelphia if you've got a short visit and a big appetite â and you want a possible celeb sighting thrown in
Writer Regan Stephens grew up in Philadelphia, and after stints in New York, London, and Los Angeles, moved back to the best city in the world in 2016. Sheâs covered Phillyâs dynamic food scene â reporting on stories about Mexican pizza, an urban cheesemaker, and a charcuterie trail â and recently won a National Magazine Award for contributing to a Philadelphia magazine feature about hoagies . Get her interactive Guide to Eating in Philadelphia on Saltete .
Unless youâve been living under a Rocky statue , youâve probably already heard that Philadelphia is home to a knockout food scene. We have the best cheesesteaks, of course, but thereâs so much more on the menu in the City of Brotherly Love. Classics abound, from red gravy Italian joints (including Ralphâs , the countryâs oldest) to beloved Chinatown institutions, and not one but two historic food markets. Beyond the traditional, though, the scene gets a spirited boost from innovative chefs and makers constantly dreaming up new ways to feed us. Of course, itâs impossible to devour it all in just one day, but with proper planning , you can get a true taste of Phillyâs top tier culinary landscape. And yes, that includes a cheesesteak.
Breakfast: Fiore
Regan Stephens
Kick off your Philly eating adventure at Fiore in Fishtown, the neighborhood northwest of Center City and home to a host of the cityâs buzziest restaurants. Run by chefs Ed Crochet and Justine MacNeil, the modern day mom-and-pop specializes in housemade pastas and squares of tomato pie for lunch, but in the morning youâll find one of the best breakfast spreads in town. Order a few of MacNeilâs Italian-inspired pastries like a berry jam-filled bomboloni, slices of impossibly-moist orange olive oil cake, and maritozzi overflowing with clouds of whipped cream. On the savory side, the Saltie â with fluffy ricotta and scrambled eggs tucked into housemade focaccia â is also a canât-miss.
Lunch: El Chingon
After breakfast, head south toward El Chingon , Juan Carlos Aparicioâs bright South Philly Cemiteria. Prepare yourself to eat again with a walk through Old City â the historic neighborhood encompassing the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, among other notable American treasures âconveniently sandwiched between the two restaurants. After two decades of working in restaurants, Aparicio opened his own, where heâs making tacos on fresh sourdough tortillas and cemitas â a sandwich that hails from his hometown of Puebla, Mexico. The chef bakes the rolls from scratch, stuffing them with beef Milanese, or house made pork chorizo, refried beans, and melted cheese.
Sweet Treat: Johnâs Water Ice
Johnâs Water Ice has been serving up water ice (that's wooder ice to the locals) since 1945, using the time-honored family recipe to whip up flavors like lemon, cherry, chocolate, and pineapple, plus a rotating variety of specials. (Honeydew and cantaloupe are popular and fleeting in the spring.) Alternatively, try a âgelatiâ â water ice layered with ice cream. There are plenty of respectable combos, but we love a simple vanilla ice cream and cherry water ice number. Donât be deterred by the long line; the pros scooping the soft, slushy ices are lightning-fast. Have your order and cash ready, though.
Dinner: Mawn
Hannah Boothman
A self-described Cambodian noodle house with no rules, Mawn occupies a pocket-sized space at the north end of Phillyâs famed Italian Market. There, chef Phila Lorn dreams up dishes that pay vibrant homage to the cuisine of his childhood, but through a decidedly fresh, first generation Philadelphian lens. Try the galangal- and lemongrass-scented beef, Mawn noodle soup with schmaltz-infused stock (a nod to his wife Rachelâs Jewish heritage), and for dessert, the funnel cake with a miso caramel drizzle. Mawn is a BYOB, so before dinner, pick up a bottle of wine from Sande Friedmanâs expertly-curated selection at Di Bruno Bros. bottle shop , just a few blocks south.
Late Night Snack: Patâs King of Steaks
PatâÂÂs King of Steaks
If you come to Philly and donât try a cheesesteak, were you even here? Stand-out options can be found throughout the city, from corner delis to Bradley Cooper favorite, Angeloâs . But for a solid late-night snack, head to the birthplace of the cheesesteak: Patâs King of Steaks . Open 24 hours a day, make your way to the window to order a classic cheesesteak with fried onions and American or Cheez Whiz. Provolone is also acceptable, but please, for the love of Gritty, donât ask for Swiss.
Spot a Celebrity at: Zahav
Daniel Knoll for Visit Philadelphia
When Jason Kelce isnât pounding Bud Lights shirtless in celebration of his brotherâs playoff win , heâs been known to enjoy a tasteful (and fully clothed) dinner at Zahav . The Philadelphia Eagles center has named the modern Israeli restaurant one of his favorite dinner destinations, and he and wife Kylie have been spotted there on date nights.
The 16-year old restaurant from chef Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook nabbed a James Beard Award for the most outstanding restaurant in the country in 2019, and it can still be tough to score a reservation. They hold the chefâs counter (and in the warmer months, tables on the outdoor patio) for walk-ins, though.
Arrive before opening to try your luck for an array of salatim, warm pita, buttery Turkish hummus served hot in a skillet, and the restaurantâs famed tender, pomegranate-infused lamb shoulder.

Charging elephant kills an American woman on 'bucket list trip' in Zambia
An American woman who was on what she had called her "last big trip" was killed when a charging elephant flipped over the car she was traveling in at a national park in Zambia .
The âaggressiveâ creature buffeted the vehicle carrying six tourists and a guide, tour operator Wilderness said in a statement Tuesday. It said the 79-year-old victim died after Saturday's incident on a game drive at the Kafue National Park in western Zambia.
The company did not name the victim but Rona Wells, her daughter, identified her as Gail Mattson in a post on Facebook. She said her mother died in a âtragic accident while on her dream adventure.â
A video circulating on social media apparently showing the incident shows a large elephant running toward a car, which slows down as the animal approaches its left side. The elephant then flips the vehicle over and the passengers can be heard gasping as the car rolls over.
NBC News does not know the condition or identity of the person who filmed the video.
Photos shared online of the car, which is emblazoned with the logo of the tour operator, show it tipped onto its side after the incident, with a deep dent in two of its side doors.
Wilderness, which describes itself as a âleading conservation and hospitality companyâ operating in eight African countries, including Zambia, did not respond to NBC News when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video and the photos.
But the tour operatorâs CEO, Keith Vincent, said in the statement that the companyâs âguides are all extremely well trained and experienced.â
"Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guideâs route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harmâs way quickly enough,â he added.
Another woman was also injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility in South Africa, the Wilderness statement said, adding that four others were treated for minor injuries.
âItâs extremely rare to see an elephant that irate,â Marlon du Toit, a wildlife photographer and safari guide, told the âTODAYâ show Thursday. âAcross Africa, there are thousands and thousands of guests on safari on a daily basis with no negative consequences.â
The exact cause of Mattsonâs death was unclear, but the company said her body would be repatriated to her family in the United States with the support of local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Lusaka.
âThis is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,â the statement added.
NBC News has reached out to Mattson's family for further comment.
Kafue National Park is Zambiaâs largest and oldest national park, according to its website, and spans an area of more than 8,000 square miles. Vast regions of the park remain unexplored and the website says it is home to a variety of untamed wildlife.
A 'bucket list trip'
Mattson spent her winters in Sun City West, Arizona, playing bridge and cards, but during the rest of the year, she "travels all over the world," her friend Brenda Biggs told NBC News. Biggs and her husband, John Longabauth, became friends with Mattson when they moved to the area 6 ½ years ago.
Longabauth said Mattson spoke to the couple about her upcoming safari trip about two weeks ago, and called it "one of her bucket list trips." He said she was very excited for the adventure.
Before she left, she gave the couple concert tickets for a show that would happen while she was traveling, telling them to enjoy the concert and "I'll see you when I get back," Longabauth recalled of the conversation.
Biggs said Mattson, who was almost 80 years old, told her that the African safari was her "my last big trip." She said Mattson was "super excited because it was like the culmination of all the trips that she had gone on."
An avid traveler, Mattson took to trips to Europe and Asia, Longabauth recalled, noting that she might have been to South America, too.
Biggs called her friend "flamboyant," "friendly" and "fabulous" and said she loved bright colors. Mattson had taken over Biggsâ job as the event planner for their 200-member bridge club, she said.
"Gail was one of the more up people you'd ever want to meet," Longabauth said. "She was always up. She was always optimistic. She was always seeing the good side of everybody."

2024 Masters props, golf odds: Expert shares top PGA Tour odds, prop bets, parlay for Augusta National
Mike mcclure locked in his expert pga golf prop picks and parlay for the masters 2024 at augusta national.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has established himself as the favorite to win the 2024 Masters at Augusta National starting on Thursday. In fact, his 13-4 Masters odds to win are the shortest in a major since Tiger Woods in 2009. While that price could dissuade some bettors from backing Scheffler with their 2024 Masters picks, there could be value on Scheffler in 2024 Masters props. He is +700 to win the tournament by at least three strokes, according to the 2024 Masters odds. Scheffler has already achieved that feat once, winning by three strokes over Rory McIlroy in 2022. Should you back Scheffler with your 2024 Masters prop bets? Before locking in your 2024 Masters prop picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .Â
McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks . He is up almost $9,500 on his best bets since the restart. Â
McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.Â
This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed McClure's picks has seen massive returns. Â
Now, McClure has dialed in on the Masters golf tournament and just locked in his top prop picks and PGA predictions. You can only see McClure's Masters 2024 prop picks at SportsLine .
Top 2024 Masters prop picks
We can tell you that one of McClure's favorite Masters prop picks is Ludvig Aberg to be the top debutant at +275. He joins Wyndham Clark as the top golfers making their Masters debut this week, as they both try to become the first golfer to win their debut at Augusta National since 1979. Aberg was the top-ranked amateur in the world when he wrapped up his collegiate career at Texas Tech last June, winning the Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year awards.
The three-time All-American quickly made a splash as a pro, winning on the DP World Tour in September and on the PGA Tour in November. Aberg was also part of the winning European Ryder Cup team in October, so he is quickly becoming a household name. McClure says the World No. 9 will continue his ascent with a strong showing in his first Masters appearance. You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to Buy the Nike Kobes Dropping for âMamba Dayâ
Celebrating the anniversary of Kobe Bryant's final NBA game.
This Saturday will mark the eight-year anniversary of Kobe Bryant playing his final NBA game on April 13, 2016. To celebrate the illustrious career of the late Los Angeles Lakers guard, Nike has prepared three special Kobe releases that pay tribute to three key locations that helped mold him into one of the greatest basketball players ever.
The upcoming releases include rereleases of the "Philly" Kobe 4, the "Italian Camo" Kobe 6, and the "Venice Beach" Kobe 8. The Kobe 4 is inspired by the city of Philadelphia, the birthplace of Bryant, while the Kobe 6 pays homage to him moving to Italy with his family when he was a child. The Kobe 8 in the set celebrates Bryant's 20-year career in Los Angeles and the city's iconic Venice Beach.
April 13 isn't the only day of the year that "Mamba Day" is observed. Fans also celebrate "Mamba Day" annually on August 24, as the date represents both of Bryant's 8 and 24 jersey numbers.
Readers will be able to cop all three Nike Kobe Protro styles on Saturday, April 13, via SNKRS and at select Nike retailers for $190 each.
