1990 Trek 950 Singletrack Restoration (2021 Update)
Six years ago, I started a project to restore, more like resto-mod, a Trek 950 that I found on Craigslist for $125. You can read more about the original build here .
My initial intent was not to do mostly short rides. However, I loved it so much, I started wondering about making the bike more capable and more modern while keeping the original good looks.
Upgrades I Made to the Trek 950 this Year
The updates that I made really changed the riding position of this bike. 4 inch rise on the handlebars, shorter stem, new saddle, new drive train. Prior to making these changes, it would be hard for me to ride past 2 hours on this bike. Now, it feels a bit more like an aggressive beach cruiser which is really fun and I like it!
The best rides are to the coffee shop!
(There are affiliate links below. These are products that I’m actually using. )
New Saddle. Brooks B17 Saddle . I always wanted to try this one. So far I like it. I’ll have to do a full review in the future.
Mone Meal Replacement Bars. Learn more here. These are sick. You gotta read the description on Mone site if you get a chance. This guy works magic and I love that they are hand made.
Sram 1x drivetrain
- Truvativ Bottom Bracket . This is a small upgrade over the square taper bottom bracket that I had installed in my first work on this bike. But allows for an affordable 1x crankset via SRAM.
- SRAM crankset – 32t . I love this option and have the same one on my Surly Karate Monkey.
- 9 Speed Chain . Always feels good to put a new chain on.
Shorter Stem. Wake 50MM
New Grips: Raceface Grips. These are surprisingly comfortable and feel amazing when riding.
Bikepacking Test Ride
After all this, I was able to get out for a super fun event where you bring nothing but a bike + $40 and plan for a Bikepacking night. We all rolled into Walmart at 9PM, loaded up on cheap blankets and hit a local campground. It was super fun. Knocked out 50 miles locally in a short/long day.
Bike Lights I’m using currently:
NightRider 1800 . This bike light has three settings and the lowest is sufficient for riding slowly on trails. The brightest is a luxury for shorter trips and on roads.
NightRider Cherrybomb 35 Taillight . This like is also so bright that when people ask not to ride behind me because it can hurt their eyes. Usually, I’m happy to ride in the back and make sure everyone is seen.
What’s missing from this Trek 950 Restoration?
Trek 950 original wheel set is holding me back from the future!
The original rear wheel is only built for a 7 speed cassette. I actually have 9 speed cassette modified into an 8 speed and this works with my 9 speed friction shifter from Microshift.
Riding up steel hill, there’s just not enough range with the 1x drivetrain. The next move will be to upgrade to a new rear wheel / hub and get a full 9 speed cassette on there.
I’ve looked into options with the standard Shimano/SRAM or potentially Box Prime 9. With the wheels being 26 inches, I probably don’t need a 50t cassette. 42 would probably be sufficient. I’m going to think on this, I’ll post an update when I make the move.
Potentially going up to a 34 in the front and putting a wider range in the back would be ideal and cover all the riding.
I’m currently on 2.0 inch tires. Going slightly wider would be fun, but there’s not a ton of room.
I’ve also considered converting to disc brakes. There’s pros and cons to that as well.

Solid and dependable
Had this bike for 23 years and used it mostly for getting around Boston but now live on Cape Cod and have been using it off road. This bike has never let me down - I have a Masi road bike which sits in the garage as I like the trek better. I rode it home from the bike store in a snow storm and have loved it ever since.
Exceptionally strong, durable, almost maintenance free. Light weight, despite the steel frame. Extremely easy to handle, yet precise and effective. Greatest thing I could not find in other MTBs, it's how came so natural to adapt to this trek 950 from first time I rode it. Nice look, mine is electric blue.
No suspension, no disc brake, no ultra light weight... simply because there were no such things for MTBs in 1989.
Great handling, I am using it since 1989, till now 2016 I am 44. I have been everywhere, city and mountain, fell down many times also but it never had a single problem, right now still working perfectly after 27 years. I can do quite well with MTB but I am not certainly a pro, however with this girl it was love at first ride and I never wished to change her for suspension, disc brake, carbon frame etcetera. I am Italian and live in Italy, but I love America and this is great stuff made in US, paid it 980.000 Italian lira in 1989 when I was in the high school, best buy I have ever made.
All around solid performer, Good handling, Tough as nails, Never lets you down. If you only own one bike, this is the one bike to own! It can last you a lifetime of riding with only basic maintenance.
I'm a big guy (6'4"_225) and I like to ride year round in all kinds of weather, and I love to ride up and down stairs in the city as well as hitting the trails on the weekends. And this bike has been a Solid Performer for the past 20 years of City Commuting, 75% of Pre-Event Training Rides, Afternoon Joy Rides, the occasional Long Weekend Tour, and even one Century. Over the life of this bike I have had other bikes as well (2-Road Bikes, 1-Hybrid, 1-Beach Cruiser, 2-Fold-Up Commuters, and 2 Other Mountain Bikes with Suspension). Some of them costing quite a bit more than my 1993 Trek 950 Single-track ridged! But no other bike has ever surpassed it. It has remained my go to bike for 85% of my rides. I have used other bikes for specific things like fast Triathlons, Tough Downhills, Sketchy Area Lock Ups, and Trunk Packable needs, but the 950 is my best all around bike by far... I would consider trading in every other bike I've had on a newer model, but not my Trek 950!
Indestructible, stiff, great climber, great commuter, super handling
no suspension
Old Faithful. Handled mud, snow, rocks, curbs, stairs, really steep descents, potholes, logs, sand and never lets me down. Climbed hills on it so steep I puked at the top. I started riding it in 1989 on Mt. Tam trails in Marin (back in the pre-suspension days) and now commute daily on it in the rough streets of DC. Rode it in DC area on fire roads and single tracks before all the trails were shut down to bikes. I'll give to one my sons in about 20 years. Like the others say, buy it if you can find one.

Rugged frame. Adapatable.
Slightly heavy than some...but who cares...
The bike is responsive and quicker. Impressed with ease of shifting and turning. For mountain country here the triple crank is a good choice especially if loaded with gear. Needed the rear center pull for mounting rack. Painted it bright cherry red (PPG bright color line.) Decals and clearcoat make it a very sharp looking rig that can take some abuse but lighter for quick response.
Great bike. Solid.
Still riding
Frame strength - after 17 years it's still rock solid.
fantastic bike - a true classic. Despite having a FS bike for the trails - this one still sits in the garage for city work (long road cruises & grocery runs).
Love this old girl she takes a beating and likes to be ridden hard and as fast as my legs can move the crank. Has lasted me years with only the need to change tires and seat. Keep it oiled and clean it up and they will last.
None I found. Would be nice with disk breaks yet I can live with out.
I will never give her up and I am satisfied without buying a new one any time soon. I have had this bike since 1998 and I love every bit of the bikesability and trust it to work every time. I just got her a gold star full service complete take down and rebuild.
BMX Racers, Huffy, some old german bikes and an old road racer.
I have never had any problems with welds or any other rpart of the bike
I have been riding my 950 for as long as I remember. I use to take it to the World Cup Downhills at Mount Snow, Vermont. Riders would often comment on the vintage ridged frame and give kudos on it. I have always used it for single track. Yet had no fears running it down a mountain side trail.
bombproof frame and components; durability; reliability
heavy; lack of front shocks
my first real mountain bike (bought in 1994). If only they still sold something of this quality instead of the disposable crap on the market today

A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.
1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS
Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.
The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.
LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR
Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)
WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)
eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.
To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.
Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".
A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.
The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.
The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.
Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.
SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?
Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21 (54cm) size and especially the 19 (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)
Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.
I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.
Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.
The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Trek 950 Commuter
This bike started with a 1993 trek 950 frame. It was built with lugged construction and True Temper OX platinum tubing, a very nice frame.
We stripped the paint and applied a black oxide treatment and oil finish over the bare metal. We built a custom brazed bar and fork and built the bike up with a Shimano xt 1×8 drivetrain.

Looking for apartments for buying in russia.
Choosing the neighborhood of your future residence is a task to be treated with diligence. Poor transport accessibility, a lacking infrastructure and unsatisfactory ecological parameters may noticeably dampen the joy a new property owner is sure to feel from their purchase. To help you avoid such a scenario, we have put together a short overview of the areas in Moscow where you may be considering the purchase of a home , complete with the pros and cons of each of the different locations:
Arbat District – the cultural and business center of Moscow. One of the most prestigious locations in the capital. It boasts a very good infrastructure and high transport accessibility. Unsurprisingly, the property costs here are the highest in Moscow. Despite its small size, the district contains around 10% of all of the capital’s new elite residential buildings, and apartments for sale make up 96% of the properties on the market in this neighborhood. The price of a square meter (3.28 sqft) for an apartment in a new building with penthouses is, on average, 12 000 USD, while the cost of the same in an old building is 9 000 USD. One can even find luxury condos with open terraces for sale in the area.
Kuntsevo District – a beautiful locality surrounded by vast areas of woodland and river beaches on the banks of Moskva River. A strong point of this neighborhood is its good environmental conditions. Brand new and modern residential compounds have been erected here. One square meter (3.28 sqft) of an apartment in a new housing complex in Kuntsevo District currently costs 3 000 USD.
Yakimanka District – one of the most interesting and prestigious areas of Moscow by popular opinion. It is packed full of well-known historic monuments, museums and large parks. The Yakimanka District changed drastically during the Soviet era: most of the centuries-old low-rise houses and mansions were completely demolished or restructured. By the beginning of the 1990’s, new residential and public complexes had already taken their place. Today, one can find condos for sale in Yakimanka’s new residential complexes for the average price of 11 000 USD per square meter (3.28 sqft). The price of a square meter in a Soviet era panel building is 4 000 USD.
Here in Russia’s capital we have our own skyscrapers – grouped together in the compound famously dubbed Moscow-City (the Moscow International Business Center). Many large corporations have their headquarters here. For 1 million US dollars you can purchase a 3-room apartment with a floor area of 607 sqft (185 m²) in one of the towers. This particular listing is located on the 25 th floor.
Where Can I Find Cheap Flats?
If you happen to be a student or if your budget is capped at 300 000 USD and you are looking for cheap condos for sale in Moscow, then the Mitino, Nekrasovka, Cheryomushki, Butovo and Novogireyevo Districts will best suit your needs. These neighborhoods each contain a great number of residential complexes inhabited by Moscow’s middle class. They also have everything one might need for a comfortable life: many schools, kindergartens, big supermarkets, public pools, hospitals, etc. One of Moscow’s Metro stations is also usually just a short walk away. The minimum price of a furnished studio flat in a location within the Moscow Ring Road (a.k.a. MKAD) is currently 100 000 USD.
