Travel time from Los Angeles to Australia

How long does it really take to fly from Los Angeles to Australia? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach Australia, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Tuesday, 2:29 pm :  start in Los Angeles drive for about 36 minutes most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 4:00 pm at the latest

3:35 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

4:35 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

5:05 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

5:20 pm :  board Virgin Blue International Airlines t/a V Australia flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

5:30 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

5:45 pm :  wheels up! take-off from LAX fly for about 17 hours in the air

Wednesday, 10:45 am (local time) :   Sydney International (SYD) Australia is 15:45 hours ahead of Los Angeles so the time in Los Angeles is actually 10:45 am you actually arrive the day after you left taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

11:00 am (local time) :  arrive at the gate at SYD deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 59 hours to your destination

Friday, 10:09 pm (local time) :  arrive in Australia

Total travel time: 80 hours

How far is Australia from Los Angeles? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 8,251 miles or 13279 km

Flight time: 17 hours

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 79 hours, 40 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 4.7x faster , and saves you about 62.5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

The most common route is LAX to SYD, so that's what we used in the sample itinerary. However, you may want to explore travel alternatives, you could try one of these routes:

  • LAX to SYD Los Angeles International to Sydney International
  • LAX to MEL Los Angeles International to Melbourne International

We picked Virgin Blue International Airlines t/a V Australia for your main flight, but there are other airlines that you should check if you're looking for the cheapest flight, or you need a different schedule. Check the websites of these airlines:

  • Delta Air Lines Inc. (DL)
  • Qantas Airways Ltd. (QF)
  • United Air Lines Inc. (UA)

Top 5 airlines serving from Los Angeles to Australia

Overall excellent but the Captain kept the seat belt sign on for far too long, especially at the beginning and end of the flight. It was 2 hours after take-off before the crew were able to start the service (on an 11 hour night flight, reducing our sleeping time) and the seat belt sign on went on during breakfast (90 mins before landing) and was not turned off again until we landed. This made for an uncomfortable journey of trying to limit fluid intake because it was unclear when the toilets would be available for use.

Crew were pleasant, happy to be there and were a joy to be around. Entire operation was professional, well thought out and ran like a Swiss clock.

United flight from SFO to PDX was cancelled. I will ask for a refund. Had to book on Alaska

The recline on the seat in front of me came back so that I was staring at the top of the man’s head in front of me the whole trip. He refused to bring his seat back up twice every time he was instructed to do so and only relented when he had a tray of good in front of him. And then right back in my lap!!! Horrible man!! I complained to the staff multiple times, but no one would address the issue. Otherwise, it would have been a perfect flight.

There was a snafu with confirming seats at check which left us in limbo for the second leg of our trip. I believe the ANZ app is not well integrated with the systems at the terminal resulting in this disconcerting error.

Carring crew, nice ambiance of the cabin, comfortable beds, good food well served. We liked everything.

The pilot tried to make up for lost time due to delays that were out of her control. She communicated the issues openly and clearly and made every effort to do what she could to alleviate issues.

The only thing that was less than excellent was the food server at dinner. (I had the chicken.) It wasn't that it was poorly heated or in difficult-to-open containers; it was just that it had a very peculiar taste. And I use that to describe not just the main course but the dessert as well. Very odd flavours for what seemed to be a mainstream item. I did like that the airline offered us a free glass of wine. The breakfast omelette wasn't bad, although it was quite bland.

only refreshments and biscuits available but it was a short flight from LAX to LAS thus it was fine.

High travel time and the flight was full but the staff handled it all well.

The person sitting next to me did not fit in one seat, so I effectively only had half a seat to myself. Airlines should come up with a strategy to sit oversized people in a way whereby they are comfortable but don't disrupt or take over other people's seats. It's unfair.

Horrible, missed my connecting flight because Alaska did not give me enough time

No hot water on a plane so no hot beverages , seats are cramped

This was a quick flight so more like a shuttle and everything went well. There was no food or beverage.

In spite of interacting with multiple employees at check-in, I was not told that my gate was only accessible by shuttle bus. I missed my flight as a result.

The checked baggage fee was too expensive. Will go back to flying Southwest. The crew were nice and the flight was fine.

They delayed the flight 30 minutes. There was an open gate right next to our gate that could have been used without delay. Boarding is a pain. You should be better and faster with no reason to wait in the sky Bridge at entry.

Packed flight. Excellent crew. Served snacks twice all very efficient and polite. Even the lady that checked in our bags was so friendly and pleasant

The A350 aircraft business class experience was very good. Comfortable and well appointed pod, and supplemental bed pad available for sleeping. Food was very good.

Business class seats and amenities were excellent, crew very attentive. Slept well. Food good, lounge experience nice. Would fly them again. A350 aircraft excellent, very quiet.

The flight attendants were extremely friendly and helpful. Everything ran on time. I highly recommend Fiji Airways.

The experience was lovely in every respect. The crews were delightful.

Very clean aircraft. Friendly staff. New plane. Food quality was good. Not my flavor but I saw the effort.

Fiji Business Class was value for money. Would do again for a long haul flight.

1.5Hrs to get from plane into terminal. Long wait. Flight to NZ 1 he late

Flight full. 'Volunteers' to check hand luggage. Checked hand luggage is lost

The part that really made for a poor trip was that we checked luggage, and it took 1.5 hrs. to get our luggage. This made it so we barely got to our next flight. We were the last ones on board.

Staff was very helpful, polite, efficient. Food was excellent. Business class seat very comfortable.

It's only a short trip from Sydney to Melbourne, which i have done many times. The trip met my expectations

The crew were amazing - A great job. They made me feel special and valued.

I really appreciated the fact that when I checked my bags at the Quantas counter after arriving from an international flight an hour early, the agent noticed I had a very long layover. He then found an earlier flight that allowed me to get to Cairns several hours earlier than I planned. That was amazing because I had already traveled over 20 hours and wasn’t looking forward to such a long layover. It allowed me to see my daughter and grandchildren much earlier (it had been two years since I visited last).

Qantas cancelled my flight for no good reason and rebooked me into a middle seat.

Boarding was terrible - the ground staff member Fredeya at lax was more military than customer service, have never encountered a customer service representative as rude as her. Apart from that all other staff were wonderful and the flight was good.

The flight met my expectations. It left and landed on time

My bag didn’t make it but otherwise it was a great experience.

I travelled first class from LAX to MEL and it was a series of disasters which I put down to lax staff who dont care and a suck it attitude to customers - its all lip service and no delivery. The flight was delayed due to aircraft refuellers putting on 300,000 litres of fuel on a 380Q1. I entered via the first class bridge loaded my bags in the overhead locker. the lady in the next isle in first class also had hers in there as she wasn't allocated a locker over her seat. The attendant asked would I like a champagne - I said yes please. he promptly delivered a empty glass and the glass left on the desk. Then he ignored me for 20 minutes. When i asked him is he out of champagne he gave me the usual rubbish I was distracted. There are four staff and 15 first class passengers - give me a break. the glass stayed there on takeoff and then was still there 9 hours into the flight. When I arrived to my seat I told him I had eaten and wouldn't be eating on the flight - it was 10.30pm. Yet he comes by later 4am ( I happen to be awake) and says are you eating with us? I asked for the bed to be made up - they put a 3 inch 7cm mattress on the chair but as usual the break in the chair - the mattress sinks into it - so I had to move it around so I didnt get my back sunk in the V - Im 187cm tall. The cabinet next to 1K is for staff bags and the toilet is next door. I tried to avoid this seat but couldn't change - in to the flight 8 hours and the cabin rest change over kicks in - this attendant is shining his torch in my eyes taking out and returning his bag. Then the toilet starts flushing and forget trying to get to sleep. Yet no-one else needed torch! 11 hours into the 15.5 hour flight I ask for breakfast - I order two poached eggs, bacon on multigrain toast, tomatos and mushrooms. I get no bacon or toast and have to order it and the eggs are cold. Then I order a coffee which is so badly spilled - and not by air turbulence she brings back a serviette and replaces the first one rather than providing a clean dry saucer! First class in Qantas is a joke as the staff just don't get the meaning of prompt service and attention to detail. I will fly business class rather than first on Qantas as its better value for money but I have been very impressed with United First Polaris and given I fly internationally every month this is going to be my choice.

Experience was great. My only advice is to have a pasta dish on the menu. Otherwise everything was excellent.

Flights delayed multiple times, travellers requests for updates ignored. Qantas continues to desatisfy travelling basics.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

For a 22 minute flight all you expect is for it to be safe and comfortable

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

No snacks served! Seating in the kast row in uncomfortable.

Wouldn’t let me check in said couldn’t find a ticket had to wait very long Time

I liked that we arrived earlier, you could improve your snacks give away

Flight was fine, it was delayed but only 30 minutes, staff were efficient, lady making announcements at LAX was really hard to understand but the rest were great.

I really enjoyed the staff and crew! Very positive and happy people! Made the experience easier! The entertainment was a bit lack luster. Better movie options as well as equipment that works smoother could be nice. My ear buds from the airline didn’t work and my tv screen had a terrible delay that made it hard to search for things to watch. Also the selections were very limited.

Flight was diverted to Canberra because Not enough fuel to circle on Sydney’s skies waiting for showers to pass. After that everything went wrong. It took forever to put fuel. Once back rolling, we stopped short of takeoff because crew had reached maximum work hours per shift. Back to gate we waited and waited in the plane with no water and no food - a total of 4 hours. Received contrasting news about the follow up of our trip. Finally we disembarked but our luggage could not be processed there as not enough custom agents. We ended up on buses and arrived at Sydney airports after a 3 hours trip. There we had to queue in line with 240 more passengers to file a lost luggage claim. We received the luggage after 48 hours, many of which spent holding with non-existent United customer service. Never able to speak to an actual person during those long phone calls. Finally on a chatline I could talk to a baggage agent, who filed another report as our luggage did not appear anywhere in their system. Thus it was surprising to get it back.

I got upgraded, so comfort was not an issue. But as always, it is the people from baggage handlers, flight attendants, pilots etc. that make the difference.

With Hallmark's The Way Home Renewed For Season 3, Here's What The Stars Told Us About Being Dunked In Water For Time Travel

More episodes, more time in the pond!

The Way Home debuted back in 2023 as Hallmark's first new TV drama in years , with network vet Andie McDowell, Grey's Anatomy alum Chyler Leigh, and relative newcomer Sadie Laflamme-Snow as the three women of the Landry family. There was already drama to be found just when it seemed like Kat (Leigh) and daughter Alice (Laflamme-Snow) would have to readjust to living with Kat's mom Del (McDowell), but add a time travel twist, and Hallmark has a hit show now guaranteed a third season . Speaking with CinemaBlend as Season 2 aired in the 2024 TV schedule , the stars opened up about filming time travel via a pond!

Teenage Alice accidentally discovered time travel in the first season when she went back to the '90s, and the show had to find a way to balance time travel and family drama very early on... and Sadie Laflamme-Snow had to be dunked in water. Chyler Leigh would later do the same. When I spoke with the cast at SCAD TVfest in Atlanta, I noted that the time travel scenes are filmed above and below the surface of the water, and the actresses shed some light on how the show pulls it off. Chyler Leigh shared:

They're both a separate process. The pond is a manmade pond. So we've got frogs, tadpoles, dirt, grime, grunge, the whole thing, the rocks. Everything that you see is absolutely real.

In case you were watching The Way Home and thought that the griminess and dirt were just TV magic that the actresses didn't actually have to dunk themselves in, that is definitely not the case! That's also not the extent of the complications of filming in a manmade outdoors pond, as Sadie Laflamme-Snow shared that "it's in Canada, outside in the fall." Who else just felt a sympathy chill for the stars? Chyler Leigh elaborated:

Those days have to be very, very well organized and calculated. So it took some time to kind of get a more streamlined process, and it's still a learning experience, because circumstances and conditions dictate a whole lot for what we are able to do in the pond. But we try to truncate those days as much as we can just so that when we do go in, if we're doing multiple scenes, and we have to be dry, we'll do all the scenes dry and then we'll do all the jumps and all that stuff afterwards that we get wet. Because this one [Sadie Laflamme-Snow] with her glorious curly hair has to be straightened and blown dry.

There are tricks to get around filming a time travel scene completely sequentially, which is good news for the hair and makeup teams of the show. Laflamme-Snow in particular faces some extra hair time, if her curls need to be straightened and dried! On the plus side, the other half of time travel scenes don't have to be filmed outdoors in a Canadian pond. The Alice actress agreed with Leigh that "it's quite a process," then continued:

And then we have the underwater portion, which is filmed in a swimming pool really. That's just because it's too nasty in the pond to see under there with a camera so we did it in a pool that's dressed like a pond. It's really something I never thought I would do, the whole acting underwater thing. Because not just swimming, but like actually doing a scene fully submerged? The first time we shot a scene in there, I go under and then I come up like, 'How'd I do?' They're like, 'Can you open your eyes?' I was like, 'Oh, yeah!’

There are different challenges in acting in the pool, namely that the stars' performances are clearly visible in ways that they wouldn't be in the grimy pond. Unlike her TV mom with Grey's Anatomy and Supergirl to her name, Laflamme-Snow didn't have many TV credits prior to The Way Home , and it sounds like this show has been a pretty unconventional learning experience. The experience was kept under control, though, as Chyler Leigh explained:

We actually have a SCUBA-certified camera department that's in the water with us every time, and so we will literally be at the point where you know you're going to be grabbed and yanked backwards, but you don't really know when.

The stars may not be able to wear SCUBA gear themselves for Kat and Alice's time travel adventures, but the camera department does, and that evidently helps make for some extra authentic performances in the pool. What easier way to sell being surprised by time travel in the water than being surprised by camera-operating SCUBA divers in a pool?

Evan Williams, who plays the enigmatic Elliot on The Way Home , chimed in to praise his co-stars... and paint a pretty funny picture of how they film the pond scenes:

We also shoot very close to the winter up in Canada, and so these two are real troopers. It gets really cold and I've seen a number of times when they get pulled out of the pond. They're dressed up like baked potatoes, wrapped in blankets.

All in all, it's safe to say that how time travel works on The Way Home is pretty different from other time travel shows and films, and fans can presumably count on that continuing into a third season. The mysteries have certainly not all been solved, and the wait for Season 3 in 2025 could feel very long depending on the Season 2 finale. For now, take a look at one of Sadie Laflamme-Snow's experiences in the grimy pond:

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse

Hearing the Eclipse:  A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they can’t see .

Maine Brac es Itself :  Businesses and planning committees are eager for visitors, but some in remote Aroostook County are not sure how they feel  about lying smack in the path of totality.

A Dark Day for Buffalo:  When the sky above Buffalo briefly goes dark  on the afternoon of April 8, the city will transcend its dreary place in the public consciousness — measured as it so often is by snowstorms — if only for about three minutes. The city can’t wait.

Under the Moon’s Shadow:  The late Jay Pasachoff, who spent a lifetime chasing eclipses , inspired generations of students to become astronomers by dragging them to the ends of the Earth for a few precarious moments of ecstasy.

A Rare Return:  It is rare for a total solar eclipse to hit the same place twice — once every 366 years on average. People in certain areas will encounter April 8’s eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the “Great American Eclipse.”

A Small City’s Big Plans:  Let the big cities have their eclipse mega-events. In Plattsburgh, N.Y., success looks different  for everyone stopping to look up.

No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.

Central Western Time, affectionately known as 'Eucla time', is WA's lesser-known second time zone

Road Signs indicating Central Western Time Zone

It's the sort of question that comes up at a quiz night — where is Western Australia's second time zone?

The Central Western Time Zone covers a small area of the Nullarbor, stretching from the eastern side of Caiguna to Border Village on the South Australian side of the dividing line.

A map of Australia, with a small area of WA, on the Great Australian Bite near the border with SA, highlighted in purple

At the border checkpoint, there are three clocks showing the time in Adelaide, Perth and Eucla.

After all, the Central Western Time Zone is more often than not called "Eucla Time".

It is 45 minutes ahead of the rest of Western Australia, and 45 minutes behind South Australia, except for during Daylight Savings when it is 1 hour 45 minutes behind.

Three clocks aboce a door labeled 'Adelaide', 'Eucla' and 'Perth'.

About 12 kilometres down the road from the checkpoint, there are three clocks above the entrance to the Eucla Motel.

Rasa Patupis is the owner of the motel which operates on Eucla time.

"It makes sense to me because we're halfway between Perth and Adelaide — it just goes with the sun," she said.

A woman pictured standing in front of a building, with a sign that reads 'Eucla Motel'

"Fortunately we have a Telstra tower here, but that works on Perth time, so your phone will be on Perth time unless you convert it to Eucla time manually.

"People are still a little bit confused — but there are signs on the highway, and I think it's a bit like folklore now."

Puzzled travellers

The time zone was a surprise to some of the travellers we spoke to in the area.

Eva, who was driving from the Hunter Valley to Perth, stopped at Eucla for lunch.

"I did turn my phone off and on and it adjusted itself, I was thinking it wasn't matching my car radio," she said.

"I didn't know Eucla [time] was different … it's very silly to be honest."

A man with a batman shirt stands with his hands on his hips.

Travelling in the opposite direction, from west to east, Rob had camped the night with his family near Eucla.

"There was a sign back on the road saying adjust your clocks 45 minutes," he said.

"It's an interesting one, maybe they need it — maybe they're in a time of their own in Eucla.

"We didn't adjust all our clocks, but we changed just one for my son so he could know what time it was when he woke up — he's a bit of an early riser.

"We'll change the rest when we get to South Australia."

To complicate the matter further, only half of Eucla operates on Eucla time, and jumbled dinner plans are more common than elsewhere.

Simone Conklin is a volunteer emergency services coordinator, who works at the front desk of the police station.

"A lot of us, due to work commitments, have head offices in Perth so we need to work on Perth time to get all our times in line for emergency services," she said.

'To put Eucla time into the mix just confuses everything."

A third time?

To simplify the matter, Arubbidy Station — located between Balladonia and Eucla — operates off its own time, distinct to Eucla time, according to owner Matthew Lewis.

"If you go through Caiguna, [the sign] says move your clocks back 45 minutes. We say we're not that smart really so we just go with one hour, so we're one hour on from WA," he said.

"It's a little bit confusing because your smart phones these days keep changing it to the right time, which is 15 minutes slower [in Eucla] than what we run on. I need to fix that, I need to talk to Mr Apple."
