The complete guide to the Booking.com Genius loyalty program

Ben Smithson

I look to maximize every hotel stay with both the benefits I receive on-property and the hotel points I earn for my booking. Typically, that means booking directly with a large hotel chain on its website to ensure I earn elite status-qualifying nights, enjoy elite-status benefits and earn points. For those reasons, I haven't delved much into the Booking.com loyalty program called Genius.

That said, it does exist. While it might not be as rewarding as some of the other third-party booking sites, such as Hotels.com Rewards, it is an option. Here's everything you need to know about the program.

Having your accommodation organised ahead makes things easier.(Photo by Andrea Rotondo/The Points Guy)

Booking.com Genius basics

Booking.com is an online accommodation booking platform with more than 28 million total accommodation listings. The site is available in 43 languages and has almost 200 support offices in 70 countries. It's not a hotel chain, and nor does it have its own properties. Instead, it just lists hotel properties that you can book, similar to Skyscanner or Google Flights for flights .

It also owns Priceline, Kayak, Agoda, RentalCars and OpenTable.

You won't receive your normal hotel program points or elite status nights when you book through a third party, so why choose Booking.com rather than booking directly through the hotel ?

If you complete any two stays booked through Booking.com within two years, you will earn Genius Level 1 for life. While this is a very low threshold to meet, and lifetime membership sounds awesome, the only benefit of Genius Level 1 is a 10% discount on select properties that are part of the Genius program. Booking.com promises that these properties that have joined the Genius program have a rating of at least 7.5/10, so you can expect a quality property.

Where you see a Genius logo next to a property, you can claim the discount. I logged in to my Genius account to check how many select properties were included that 10% discount. On a sample search for properties in Westminster, London , only 14 of the 36 available included the Genius discount. I also performed the same search without logging into my Genius account and the prices for those 14 Genius properties were around 10% higher when not logged in, so this is a genuine discount where available.

If you complete five stays within two years you will move up to Genius Level 2, where you will receive:

  • 10%-15% discount at select properties
  • Free breakfast at select properties
  • Free room upgrade at select properties

Though I don't use Booking.com much, my account says I'm Genius Level 2. I logged in to my account to perform a search to see just how many properties included these listed benefits. Using the Westminster, London search, of the 14 out of 36 with Genius benefits:

  • All 14 properties offered at least a 10% discount
  • Only two out of 14 offered the higher 15% discount
  • None offered free breakfast
  • Only 1 out of the 14 offered a free room upgrade

travel genius flights

While only a small sample size, I would expect a 10% discount on some of the properties with Genius Level 2 with the very occasional room upgrade, 15% discount or free breakfast, though this will be rare and unexpected. I would not consider these to be regular benefits you can rely on receiving.

There are only two levels of "status" with Genius: Genius Level 1 and Genius Level 2. Even if you use the program much more than five stays within two years, your benefits will be capped to the above at the Genius Level 2 tier.

When to use Booking.com

If you're going to stay regularly at large hotel chains like Hilton , Hyatt , Marriott and Radisson , then I believe it's still best to book directly with those properties and earn hotel elite status, benefits and points. It's best to use Booking.com when looking at remote destinations, if you want to book a boutique hotel or a unique property or you know you have a one-off stay at a chain you'll never (or almost never) utilize again. Also, if you're a "free agent" with no loyalty to any one particular hotel chain or program and will never stay enough to earn elite benefits with an individual hotel loyalty program, Booking.com can be a good way to receive some benefits (like that 10% discount) at lots of different, unaffiliated properties.

Remember, if you're looking to book a luxury property, it could be best to utilize a Virtuoso agent or Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and compare the benefits you'll receive over any savings toward a future stay with Booking.com.

Bottom line

If you book enough of the big-box chain hotels to carry elite status and earn hotel points, Booking.com may not make sense for you. Remember that for bookings made with online travel agencies like Booking.com, in most cases, you won't earn hotel points or elite credit, and the properties don't have to honor your existing elite status (though some do anyway). I also find upgrades to be less generous and room assignment poor when booking through online travel agencies compared to booking direct.

I do like the very low thresholds to reach the two different Genius levels, though note that unlike with the Hotels.com Rewards program where you can receive your 10% discount on virtually all properties (via its 11th-night-free deal), the discounts as a Genius are only on a limited number of properties. Genius Level 2 additional benefits like room upgrades and free breakfasts are a bit misleading, as not every property actually offers them, so this should be looked at as an occasional perk.

Round The World Tickets – The Essential RTW Guide

Round the World tickets guide

A Round the World ticket (RTW ticket) is a special kind of airfare that can take you around the world using different airlines.

RTW tickets are offered by the global airline alliances and also some specific airline partnerships.

This guide provides a detailed overview of Round-the-World airfares and discusses alternatives such as flying around the world using long-haul budget airlines.

Let’s jump straight in to our essential RTW ticket guide.

1. Introduction to Round the World Tickets

2. round the world ticket rules, 3. round the world tickets from airline alliances, 4. oneworld round the world tickets, 5. star alliance round the world tickets, 6. skyteam round the world tickets, 7. other round the world tickets, 8. round the world flights on long-haul budget airlines, 9. rtw ticket agents/brokers, 10. round-the-world ticket tips, 11. round the world tickets guide summary.

What is a Round the World ticket?

A RTW ticket is a special kind of airfare that is literally a circumnavigation of the world using a number of different airlines. With up to 16 possible flight segments, a RTW ticket is valid for 1 year after the first departure and must start and finish in the same country. It must follow either an easterly or westerly global direction of travel.

The following is an example of a Round-the-World ticket route starting in London, UK:

London-Dubai-Delhi-Bangkok-Hong Kong-Singapore-Perth-Sydney-Auckland-Honolulu-Los Angeles-San Francisco-London

or in airport code notation:

LHR-DXB-DEL-BKK-HKG-SIN-PER-SYD-AKL-HNL-LAX-SFO-LHR

This is quite a normal Europe-Asia-Oceania-North America RTW routing with 12 segments. In fact this was the first round-the-world flight itinerary we ever flew on – way back in the mid-1990s and well before the 3 main airline alliances were formed. In those days you got paper issued tickets and up to 24 segment coupons were possible!

How much does a Round-the-World ticket cost?

An economy RTW ticket will generally cost between $2,500-$6,000.

A  premium economy RTW ticket (where available) will roughly cost between $3,500-$7,500.

A business class RTW ticket will cost $5,000-$14,000 .

A first class RTW ticket costs $8,000-$20,000 .

Round the world ticket prices can vary significantly depending on the routing and the departure country. RTW tickets are bookable up to 12 months in advance and are in standard e-ticket format.

The benefit of RTW tickets is that they are a convenient package that allow you to visit many cities. This can include some of the more obscure places which would otherwise be expensive to reach on a single trip.

How about Chile’s Easter Island, Rarotonga, Vladivostok, Reunion Island or Svaalbard, to name but a few?

A well planned 16 segment RTW trip could save you 25-40% compared with buying standard point-to-point tickets.

A Round the World ticket must begin and end in the same country though not necessarily the same city in the case of larger countries. As examples, from the US you could start a RTW route from Boston and end it in Seattle; from Australia you could originate from Sydney and end in Brisbane, Melbourne etc.

As mentioned, you must follow either an easterly or westerly global direction of travel . Did you know that flying times will actually be quicker if travelling in an easterly direction due to the presence of the jet stream – about 6 hours faster globally than going westerly!

For RTW tickets there are 3 main geographic zones (known as Traffic Conferences ) which divide the world:

  • TC1: Americas (including Greenland, Caribbean, Hawaiian Islands)
  • TC2: EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa plus Seychelles)
  • TC3: Asia and Oceania

On a RTW ticket you are permitted to cross each traffic conference once only; in addition, you can only cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans once each. However, backtracking within a single TC zone is permitted .

Most RTW ticket tariffs are based on total permitted mileage bands – from 26,000 to 39,000 miles . As a guideline, the circumference of the Earth at the equator is 24,900 miles.

A standard alliance RTW ticket allows 16 flight segments – thus up to 15 stopovers can be made between your origin and final destination city. In airfare terms, a stopover is regarded as staying at a destination 24 hours or more. The minimum amount of stopovers on a RTW ticket is 3.

A segment is actually a flight or flights between 2 cities under a single flight number. So Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur-Jakarta with KLM (KL809) is a single segment despite the stop in Kuala Lumpur. AMS-KUL-CGK is 1 segment but 2 sectors (2 take-offs and landing).

RTW tickets do allow you to include a maximum of 5 surface sectors . For instance one could fly into Bangkok (BKK) with the next flight being out of Singapore (SIN). In this case the trip BKK-SIN is taken independently of the RTW ticket, either overland or on another airline ticket. Note that a surface sector is still regarded as 1 flight segment and BKK-SIN mileage would also be added to the RTW ticket’s permitted total.

Watch out if flying in and out of a large city’s different airports as that would cost you a segment. For example, if you fly into London Gatwick and then leave out of London Heathrow, then Gatwick-Heathrow would be counted as 1 segment to be taken off your maximum allowable 16 segments.

RTW tickets are flexible in the sense that you can freely change the dates of your flights , subject to seat availability. Changing the routing on an alliance RTW would incur an extra charge of $125 plus any adjustment of taxes.

It is possible to have open segments on a RTW ticket which means that you do not yet have a date or confirmed seat for a specific segment. This may be less time consuming than booking everything in advance and then having to change the dates on multiple flight segments.

Children’s Round the World Tickets : Generally an infant under 2 who does not need a seat would pay 10% of the RTW fare; children 2-11 with a seat pay 75% of the RTW fare – although Star Alliance does not offer this discount on business and first class tickets.

Standard RTW tickets are offered from the global airline alliances Oneworld , Star Alliance and Skyteam . When considering a RTW ticket from an alliance take a good look at their route network as there may be some regions which are not as well covered.

Oneworld lacks a comprehensive route network in Africa but is very strong in Europe, North America and Australia.

Star Alliance is relatively weak in South America, the Middle East, Australia, Indonesia and Russia. It has extensive coverage of Europe, North America, Africa and Asia.

Skyteam lacks coverage in Australia/New Zealand and South America but has a good network in Europe, North America, Middle East and Asia. It has the best alliance network in China.

Alliance RTW tickets include the following checked baggage allowance. Economy class has 1 piece (20kg), business class 2 pieces (total 30kg) and first class 2 pieces (total 40kg).

Oneworld offers 2 types of round-the-world tickets based on either continents visited or maximum mileage.

oneworld rtw tickets

The oneworld Explorer (ONE) ticket is based on number of continents visited (3, 4, 5 or 6) with no maximum mileage in either economy class (L), business class (D) or first class (A).

In terms of notation, an economy class oneworld Explorer ticket covering 4 continents would be a “ LONE4″ . A business class 5 continent ticket would be a “ DONE5″ and so on.

Oneworld defines its 6 continents as follows:

  • Europe/Middle East including Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Georgia, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, Russia west of the Urals, Sudan, Tunisia and Yemen
  • Africa (excluding countries named above)
  • Asia including the Indian subcontinent, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia east of the Urals, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan (excluding countries named above)
  • Australia, New Zealand and the South West Pacific
  • North America including the Caribbean, Central America and Panama
  • South America

You can fly on 16 segments with a maximum of 4 segments in each continent (exception: 6 in North America). You can only stop twice in your continent of origin.

Travel is permitted on the following oneworld airlines and some limited partner/affiliate airlines: American Airlines (AA), British Airways (BA), Cathay Pacific (CX), Finnair (AY), Iberia (IB), Japan Airlines (JL), LATAM (JJ), Malaysia Airlines (MH), Qantas (QF), Qatar Airways (QR), Royal Jordanian (RJ), S7 Airlines (S7) and SriLankan Airlines (UL).

Note that LATAM is planning to leave Oneworld by October 2020.

The Oneworld Explorer is often the RTW ticket of choice from air travel pros due to the lack of mileage limitations. The ticket is valid from 10 days to 12 months.

Oneworld also sells mileage based RTW tickets called Global Explorer . There are 4 mileage tiers:

  • Tier1: up to 26,000 miles (economy class only)
  • Tier2: up to 29,000 miles (economy class only)
  • Tier3: up to 34,000 miles (economy, business or first class)
  • Tier4: up to 39,000 miles (economy class only)

The Global Explorer ticket allows travel on some other selected oneworld partners including Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Fiji Airways, Jetstar, Meridiana and WestJet.

Premium economy flights on Oneworld RTW tickets are available for a surcharge (per sector) on the following airlines where available: American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Japan Airlines and Qantas.

Oneworld’s online booking tool is here . Tip: If you have an itinerary already in mind then just enter the airport codes like this: “LON HKG SYD SFO LON” to quickly complete your map route.

Star Alliance offers 3 mileage based Round-The-World tickets – with a maximum of 29,000 miles (RWSTAR1), 34,000 miles (RWSTAR2) and 39,000 miles (RWSTAR3). These are available in economy, premium economy, business class and first class.

star alliance rtw tickets

Star Alliance also offers a cheaper 26,000 miles RTW special fare for economy (5 stops) and business class (15 stops).

Travel is permitted on the following Star Alliance airlines: Adria Airways (JP), Aegean Airlines (A3), Air Canada (AC), Air China (CA), Air India (AI), Air New Zealand (NZ), ANA (NH), Asiana Airlines (OZ), Austrian Airlines (OS), Avianca (AV), Brussels Airlines (SN), Copa Airlines (CM), Croatia Airlines (OU), Egyptair (MS), Ethiopian Airlines (ET), EVA Air (BR), LOT Polish Airlines (LO), Lufthansa (LH), Scandinavian Airlines (SK), Shenzhen Airlines (ZH), Singapore Airlines (SQ), South African Airways (SA), SWISS (LX), TAP Portugal (TP), Thai (TG), Turkish Airlines (TK) and United Airlines (UA).

You can go here to use the Star Alliance RTW Book and Fly tool which will give price quotations for Star Alliance Round-the-World tickets. For trip ideas see the Star Alliance inspiration page .

Similarly, Skyteam alliance offers 4 mileage based Round-The-World airfares in economy, business and first class. These have maximum mileage of 26,000 miles (RTWSKY 4), 29,000 miles (RTWSKY 3), 33,000 miles (RTWSKY 2) and 38,000 miles (RTWSKY 1).

skyteam rtw ticket

3-15 stops are allowed on Skyteam RTW tickets with a validity of 10 days to 12 months.

These are available for travel on Skyteam carriers: Aeroflot (SU), Aerolineas Argentinas (AR), Aeromexico (AM), Air France (AF),  Air Europa (UX), Alitalia (AZ), China Airlines (CI), China Eastern (MU), China Southern (CZ), CSA Czech Airlines (OK), Delta (DL), Garuda Indonesia (GA), Kenya Airways (KQ), KLM (KL), Korean Air (KE), MEA (ME), Saudia (SV), Tarom (RO), Vietnam Airlines (VN) and Xiamen Air (MF).

Note Air Europa is likely to leave Skyteam.

Skyteam’s online Round the World ticket planner is here

A number of airlines market their own RTW tickets in conjunction with selected partners. These tend to be cheaper and are simpler products than the main alliance RTW offerings. Prices start from about $1,600 in economy.

The Great Escapade – This is a UK-based RTW airfare from Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Silk Air and Virgin Atlantic . The maximum permitted mileage is 29,000 miles although up to 4,500 miles can be added on at a rate of £130 per 1,500 miles. This fare has unlimited stops and is good for UK-Asia-Oceania-North America-UK. Prices depend on the route and start from about £1,300 in economy class; fares also available in premium economy and business class.

Virgin Australia offers a RTW fare from Australia in conjunction with Virgin Atlantic. You can fly around-the-world on these 2 airlines alone: Virgin Atlantic between Los Angeles-London-Hong Kong and Virgin Australia on Hong Kong-Melbourne-Los Angeles. There are other possible ticket combinations which also include Qantas and Cathay Pacific flights.

The alliance RTW tickets do not cover travel on no frills budget airlines. The likes of Easyjet and Ryanair , Air Asia, Scoot and Southwest all have excellent regional networks.

We are seeing the advent of long-haul budget airlines which can connect the regions offering cut-price travel. This gives the opportunity to construct an independent RTW ticket with a mix of airlines.

In theory it should be possible to put together a budget RTW ticket for little over $1,000 base fare although there are still some limitations on trans-Pacific flights. Also remember the budget airline fares do not include checked luggage – which could be important on a RTW trip where you may be hitting a variety of different climates – and this could add to the base cost significantly.

For those who don’t want to have the RTW ticket restrictions of 16 stops and 12 months, putting your own trip together using independent airlines might be a good option. Especially gap year travellers who are flexible and want to create their itinerary as they go.

Obviously you won’t earn any alliance frequent flyer miles if you go the budget route.

The following airlines offer long-haul budget flights:

LEVEL – This low-cost airline from International Airline Group (IAG) operates trans-Atlantic flights from its Barcelona and Paris Orly base. It flies to Boston, San Francisco and Buenos Aires and one-way prices start at $200.

Scoot – The Singapore-based budget airline has a good network covering south-east Asia and Australia. It also has flights to Athens and Berlin from Singapore. It uses Boeing 787 aircraft. Whilst base fares may be cheap, Scoot is well known for higher ancillary fees.

Air Asia X – The medium-haul arm of budget heavyweight Air Asia flies Kuala Lumpur-Honolulu via Osaka using an Airbus A330.

Jetstar – The Qantas low-cost subsidiary has an extensive network around Australia and Asia. It also flies from Sydney and Melbourne to Honolulu with fares from $225 one-way. It is actually possible to fly with Jetstar on  Oneworld Round the World tickets.

An example RTW budget itinerary would be:

London-Athens (easyjet); Athens-Singapore (Scoot); Singapore-Sydney (Scoot); Sydney-Honolulu (Jetstar); Honolulu-Vancouver (Westjet); Vancouver-London (Air Transat)

Now, we are not necessarily recommending you go out and book a budget RTW. The extra charges will certainly add up and each booking will be separate.

That said, some of the above budget airlines have very reasonable premium seat products. These could be a budget alternative to buying a RTW ticket in premium economy.

For those on a standard alliance RTW ticket, budget airlines can still be useful for taking cheap side trips whilst on your journey.

An interesting tool for putting together an independent RTW or multi-stop air ticket is Indie from US based agent Bootsnall. It can give you an immediate bookable quote for up to 18 stops (no mileage limits) and uses both standard and budget airlines.

Other well known specialist RTW agents are:

  • Airtreks (US)
  • STA Travel (UK/Australia)
  • Trailfinders (UK)
  • Roundtheworldflights.com (UK)
  • Travel Nation (UK)
  • Roundabouttravel (Australia)
  • Airfare Geeks – MAVE Travel Group (Australia)

[We have no connection with any of the above agents.]

It is always worth getting multiple quotations for your RTW ticket from specialist agents/brokers as well as the airlines and alliances.

Generally you extract get better value from the alliances if making at least 10 stops. For those needing shorter round-the-world ticket itineraries (say 5-7 stops), an agent may be able to quote a cheaper ticket price than an alliance – particularly in business class.

Cheaper Airfare Countries – As with cheap business class tickets , you will save a significant amount of money (especially in business or first class) by buying and starting a RTW trip from one of the cheaper airfare countries – this includes Sri Lanka, Egypt, Mozambique and South Africa. Although you may sometimes have to find a local travel agent to ticket the fare and also need to factor in a positioning flight to that particular starting city.

turkish airlines business class

For example, let’s take a simple OneWorld Explorer RTW route in business class London-Los Angeles-Sydney-Bangkok-Hong Kong-Doha-Johannesburg-London . The price (US dollars) varies depending on which is our starting city.

At the time of writing, the oneworld Explorer price from Los Angeles is $13,700; from Sydney $11,100; from London $10,800; and from Johannesburg $9,700. Simply by starting from Johannesburg instead of Los Angeles in this case, you could save $4,000.

The reason for the UK and South Africa being cheaper has been the recent relative weakness of the pound sterling and rand.

Prices have be as low as $5,000-$8,000 in some markets although airlines eventually raise prices if too many tickets are being sold to non-residents. Starting in Colombo (Sri Lanka) will price at just under $8,000.

It is also worth calculating the price per segment for your RTW ticket. Anything under $400 per segment for business class is very good value.

With 30 to 80 hours of flying time on a round-the-world ticket – depending on route and segments – maximising your business class experience can make your journey a lot more comfortable. Not only on board with flat seats and premium catering but also on the ground with dedicated check-in, fast-lane security and airport lounge access options .

Taxes and Surcharges – The first airline on the RTW itinerary will normally issue the ticket and calculate the taxes and fuel surcharges. RTW ticket fare calculations can be complex and there may be significant differences in taxes and charges between airlines – these can run anything up to about $2,200. Before booking, experiment by changing the airline of your first flight to see if the surcharges can be reduced.

That said it is worthwhile getting your RTW ticket issued by a major airline (such as British Airways or American Airlines) as making changes will probably be easier.

Airport taxes vary significantly so be flexible with your route and research alternative transport options as well – whether low cost airlines or high speed trains – and consider your surface sector options. With some of the highest air passenger taxes in the world, London UK may be one stopover to avoid.

Frequent Flyer Elite Status/Air Miles – If you are planning to fly on an alliance Round-The-World ticket then you definitely should be a member of one of the airline frequent flyer programs in the alliance.

Now flying on a paid business class RTW ticket from a cheaper country is an excellent way of accelerating yourself to top tier elite status in a frequent flyer program . Do watch the timing of the trip in terms of your membership year – whether you want to credit all the status miles over a single year or perhaps over 2 membership years.

Some flyers will try to max out the number of possible segments (16) and fly on the longest possible flights to get as many frequent flyer miles as possible – particularly on a Oneworld Explorer ticket which has no mileage limitations. You often have the choice of flying under a codeshare number rather than operating airline which can also make a difference to the award miles credited (depending on your airline program rules).

Lastly, never skip a flight on a RTW ticket as you risk your entire itinerary being cancelled. Always inform the airline in advance if you need to change the flight date.

Cabin Limitations – Be aware if buying a first class or premium economy class RTW ticket – many airlines/routes do not have these cabins available. First class seats tend to only be available on major routes.

Star Alliance carriers with a premium economy cabin are Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, EVA Air, Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, SAS, Singapore Airlines, THAI and Turkish Airlines.

Nested RTW Tickets – If you do a significant amount of travelling it is possible to run more than one RTW ticket at the same time. Flyers with nested RTW tickets generally use the tickets to travel between their homebase and their favoured (cheaper) starting points.

RTW Tickets with Miles/Points – A number of airlines offer the possibility of booking an award round-the-world airline ticket – for a hefty amount of points. Here are a few examples:

Qantas (Oneworld) charges 132,400 (economy), 249,600 (premium economy), 318,000 (business) or 455,000 (first class) for a Round-the-World ticket up to 35,000 miles, 16 segments and 5 stopovers.

A RTW ticket (Star Alliance) using Lufthansa Miles&More points will cost 180,000 (economy), 335,000 (business) and 500,000 (first class) before applicable taxes and surcharges.

ANA offers round-the-world awards with up to 8 segments (with some restrictions) based on various total mileage bands. A trip of 25,001-29,000 miles costs 120,000 miles (economy) and 170,000 (business). Travelling between 44,001-50,000 miles costs 200,000 miles (economy) and 300,000 miles (business).

Skyteam’s Korean Air charges 140,000 SkyPass miles (economy) and 220,000 Skypass miles (business) for a Round-the-World ticket.

You can sometimes extract more value from an award chart by booking 2 or 3 long-haul one-way flights with stopovers and effectively creating your own RTW ticket.

We would probably recommend booking business class rather than economy class on rewards as it is priced at 1.5-2x points (compared with the standard 3.6x average business:economy airfare ratio).

And as we are talking about a significant chunk of miles/points needed for RTW tickets, don’t forget that airlines can always devalue their award charts at any given moment!

  • A Round-The-World (RTW) ticket is a special airfare for circumnavigating the globe with up to 16 segments (15 stopovers) and valid for 12 months.
  • Travel starts and ends in the same country and follows either an easterly or westerly direction. Up to 5 surface (overland) sectors can be included.
  • RTW tickets are offered by the main global alliances – Oneworld, Star Alliance and Skyteam. Simpler RTW tickets can be offered by various airline partnerships.
  • Tickets are normally mileage based (26,000-39,000 miles) or continent based and are generally issued by the first airline flown.
  • Dates can be changed for free, route changes cost around $125.
  • You can only cross the Atlantic and Pacific ocean once but can backtrack within a continent.
  • Economy RTW tickets cost $2,500-$6,000 although more basic tickets can be cheaper.
  • Premium economy RTW tickets (where available) cost roughly $3,500-$7,500.
  • Business RTW tickets cost $5,000-$14,000 – mainly depending on the starting country and the strength/weakness of the local currency. Cheaper countries to start a RTW ticket include Sri Lanka, Egypt, Mozambique and South Africa.
  • First class RTW tickets cost $8,000-$20,000 but ensure first class cabins are available on your proposed flight routes.
  • Taxes and surcharges can cost up to $2,200 on a RTW ticket.
  • RTW tickets can help you get top-tier elite status in a frequent flyer program and a significant amount of air miles/points, especially by maximising your route options.
  • Get a quote from a RTW-specialist agent as they can sometimes be cheaper than an alliance fare, particularly for trips with less stops.
  • It is possible to fly around-the-world using a mix of budget airlines which would can cost $1,000-$2,000, but watch for extra charges.

Fly Business Class For Less (Wait…what?!)

Sick of squashing into that tiny space in economy and the guy next to you falling asleep on your shoulder? The easy solution is to fly Business class! But how? I know it’s not cheap, and I could never afford to fork out the full price of a business ticket.

Try this hack that has allowed me to travel Business Class on a few airlines while barely paying half the advertised price. Not by some magical sweet talking of the check-in staff, but simply by bidding for upgrades through the airline’s website!

Etihad, Singapore Air, Cathay, Virgin Australia and many more airlines all let you bid for a business class upgrade. There will be a “minimum bid” you can place which varies depending on airline and route.

I usually take a look a week before my flight on the seat selection screen to see how busy the flight seems. If it looks like there’s a lot of space I just place a minimum bid and I’ve been successful that way. If it looks like there are a few passengers I just bid $10 to $20 over the minimum and I’ve won countless upgrades that way. The majority of people just bid the minimum without even realizing a tiny bit more could swing it for them.

Give it a try next time you book an economy flight and who knows you may get to stretch out at the pointy end of the plane!

Search Flights One Way Instead Of Round Trip

Without a doubt, one of the ultimate travel hacks is having flexibility regarding your travel dates. You’d be surprised how tweaking your departure and return date by one day could save you big dollars sometimes up to 50%. Yes, you read that right! If you have the opportunity to be flexible with the dates, you can save loads.

But how do you go about finding the best dates to leave or to return on? Here’s how. Login my favorite airfare search engine Skyscanner.com . Start with selecting ONE WAY then fill in your departure and destination city. Next click on the DEPART field and instead of entering a specific date chose WHOLE MONTH then press ENTER. The result box will show a price target link which once selected will pop up a calendar box.

Bingo, you’ve made it to the sweet spot, this is where the game is played.

From this display, you can select a Calendar or Chart view to get the best glimpse at the optimal rates. I like to toggle between both views as occasionally some hidden nuggets are snuck into one display mode instead of another. Once you’ve narrowed down a One Way date, repeat the same process for the other leg of your flight.  Now you will see the magic happen as selecting a Round Trip option with these two ultimate dates will result in an even lower airfare total.

If you have the flexibility in your travel plans, playing around with dates is a marvelous way to save on airfare and who doesn’t love that!

Always Clear Your Cookies

Often times when searching for cheap flights, whether it’s on an airline’s website or with a flight search engine like Skyscanner, we’re not ready to purchase tickets the second we find a cheap flight. The problem is, the next time you look up that same flight, even if it’s only a few hours later, you may find that the price has gone up.

That’s because flight booking sites track your cookies aka browsing history. If sites know that you’re highly interested in a certain route, they may bump the prices up for you. Cookies will also track if you’ve been looking up other information about destinations, for example “top activities in Vancouver.”

This means that even if it’s your first time looking up a flight, you may not be seeing the most accurately low prices. To avoid this, clear your cookies before searching for a cheap flight. By clearing your cookies, you will get unfiltered results of the lowest possible rates to your destination.

Clearing your cookies is really simple and easy. On a Mac, go to your Privacy settings on Safari or your browser of choice, click “manage website cookie data,” then click remove all. On a PC, head to the Safety setting on Internet Explorer, then click “delete browsing history” and delete all cookies.

Use VPNs To Change Your Location

We’ve used this cheap flight hack many times over the past few years and we have always saved money with it. You will always get the cheapest flight if you are booking from the place you wish to fly from. In the internet world, that means that your computer, laptop or phone needs to be located in the country where you’re booking the flight.

Of course, that’s not always possible. Physically at least. But it is virtually – if you have a VPN.

A VPN – virtual private network – lets you spoof your location to where you want it to be.

The logic here is that the website will think that you’re actually in the USA, making your flight leaving from the USA cheaper. The best VPNs have multiple servers in multiple countries, so you’ll have lots of options.

I’ve saved hundreds of dollars, euros, pesos and GB pounds on flights this way. This year we’ve saved on flights in Colombia, but some time back we saved 700 euros on last-minute emergency flights in Europe too!

As well as the money you’ll save, you really should use your VPN when you’re booking anything to make sure that your credit card and login information isn’t being snooped on by anyone on the public WiFi networks!

Check Out The Deals From Scott’s Cheap Flights

Scott’s Cheap Flights is a great tool to use if you are looking to travel on a budget . The website allows you to sign up for free flight alerts, which will let you know of price drops and flight deals based on your preference and location.

Scott’s Cheap Flights will send out daily emails with discounted flights and booking instructions, making the process of finding cheap flight extremely easy. Using both software and human flight experts, the website can ensure up-to-date deals that are useful for their customers.

Unlike many last minute deals, the website sends out alerts 2-8 months prior to the departure date, which gives people ample time to prepare for their upcoming trip. They also have a blog spot that focuses on flights-and-airports-related content that helps others make better trip decisions.

If you’d like to opt for more options and benefits, they also have a membership that provides additional flight alerts, error fares, and discounted traveling opportunities during peak season. After signing up on the website, I’ve received daily email alerts with prices much lower than I’ve found on other platforms.

The site notes that on average, people have saved up to $500 on a flight found through their platform, which I think is quite fantastic!

Rack Up Miles By Joining Loyalty Programs

When you sign up for airline loyalty programs (which are completely free to join), it’s really easy to rack up a ton of miles doing everyday things, like buying plane tickets, online shopping, or even just going out to dinner.

These miles are easily converted to flight upgrade, plane tickets, or even companion passes – all for free (although, please note that you usually have to pay fees and taxes for these perks). Truth be told, air travel is the slowest way to earn miles – if you want a major injection of free miles, keep an eye out for awesome special sign-on bonuses for credit cards (these happen a lot around Black Friday or the beginning of the year).

Lots of premium cards offer up to 50,000 airline miles or more (a $750+ value) if you spend a designated amount of money within the first few months of opening the card (pro tip: open a credit card when you have a major life event, like a wedding or moving, to pay for).

If you pay for all of your living expenses using one of these cards (and, I cannot stress this enough, pay off your balance every month!), these points will add up quickly and you’ll be flying business class before you know it. So what’s the best hack to get cheap airfare? Rack up those free points, of course!

Give This Layover Trick A Shot

One of my all-time favorite ways to  book cheap flights  is by utilizing  Skiplagged ’s handy dandy Layover Trick. While this little-known tip forces you to only bring a carry-on (which you should already be doing if you want to save money on flights!), it can chisel hundreds off ticket prices.

So how does the layover trick work? By scouring numerous flight paths with a specific layover at your desired end destination and showing you the cheapest option!

For example, not long ago I booked a flight from Nashville, Tennessee, to Minneapolis, Minnesota. The actual flight as a whole went all the way to Toronto, Canada! It just worked out that this particular flight had a layover in Minneapolis and ended up being cheaper than a flight booked directly to the city. Cool, right?

But the best part? There’s no secret or difficult way to take advantage of this virtually unknown cheap flights tip!  Skiplagged does all the work for you. All you have to do is put in your starting destination and end destination and it’ll show you the cheapest option.

Just make sure to only pack a carry-on if you do utilize the Layover Trick, as any checked baggage will continue on to the final airport!

Try Booking Each Ticket Separately

When you are searching for a cheap flight online and know that you are traveling with more than one person. One hack that you can do is to use a website such as Skyscanner to save money on your tickets. The hack is to purchase each ticket individually. Here is how I usually do it when booking flights to Jamaica from the United Kingdom.

Whenever I select 2 people and look through the search results, the prices are usually slightly more expensive. Instead, what I do is a search for 1 adult in two different browser tabs. Then, if I find that the ticket price is cheaper, I go ahead and purchase each ticket individually.

If not being able to sit together during the flight is a deal breaker, there are 2 things you can do to make sure that you and your companion are both seated together. Depending on the airline, once you have received the e-ticket, you can go to the check-in page and select the desired seat numbers that you want.

If you have purchased the tickets via a travel agent, you can contact them and ask to make sure that both passengers are seated together on the plane.

Use Skyscanner’s ‘Everywhere’ Feature

One of our favorite flight hacks is also the simplest! We’re never that picky with where we want to go. Truth be told, every country in the world is on our bucket list! That’s why we love using the ‘Everywhere’ function on Skyscanner .

It couldn’t be any easier to use. Head over to Skyscanner and start by indicating your location in the ‘From’ field. Then, instead of picking a location, just let Skyscanner show you where the cheapest flights from your destination are. This is the pop-up that will appear as soon as you click in the Destination field. Pick it.

Then, depending on if you know what dates you want to travel, you can either pick the whole month, your specific dates, or even the cheapest month. Skyscanner will then list all the places you can fly to and their respective costs. It’s that easy!

The best way to take advantage of this option is to be very flexible, as much with your dates as with your location. That way, you can really get the best deal from the city you’re in. We used this function so many times while we were traveling for 15 months. We didn’t know what our next destination was going to be, but we didn’t mind because we knew that we wanted to visit most of the countries in South-East Asia.

So if your bucket list is long, and you don’t mind where you’re going next, Skyscanner’s Everywhere option is perfect for you!

Purchase Tickets In Person

Want to make a bargain flight deal even cheaper? Then visit your local airport terminal! Both Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines waive their online convenience charges if you purchase your tickets in person.

Spirit Airlines calls it a “Passenger Usage Charge (Carrier Fee)” and Frontier Airlines calls it a “Carrier Interface Charge” but they essentially have the same premise. They are fees the airlines tack on top of the flight price for the convenience of booking their tickets over the web.

Since they are fees and not federally mandated charges, both airlines will waive these costs if you purchase your tickets at the airport terminal. You’re rewarded with a savings of $15-$30 each way per ticket. If you’re purchasing multiple tickets (family travel anyone?) these savings really add up!

If you want to calculate your exact savings, visit the airline website (third party sites won’t do), select flights for your desired itinerary and tree out the costs for your final total. Look for the convenience fees charged and subtract that to get your bargain price.

It is worth noting that there is no special line for those purchasing airline tickets at the counter. You will have to wait in line with those hoping to catch outbound flights (and other bargain hunters like yourself). However, depending on your potential savings, I would note the effort as a worthy cause!

Be Flexible With Your Dates

We are always looking for great ways to save money on our flights, and one thing that’s always worked for us is to be flexible with our travel dates. Airlines tend to have better prices if you fly during the week versus on the weekend. We’ve typically found midweek to be the best time to travel for cheaper flights.

So if you can go early, or hold off a couple days, try checking out the prices for Tuesday-Thursday. Make sure you aren’t flying around a holiday, as those prices will tend to go up a lot, since it’s a very popular time to travel. If you can delay your trip until after the holiday traffic dies down, you can save lots of money.

Another way you can be flexible with your dates is to go during the low or off seasons. If you go when it’s most popular, then your flight will most likely be a lot more than if you went during a slower time of the year.

Being flexible with your dates whether it be time of year, which day you fly in and which day you fly out, or traveling when it is not near a holiday can help keep your flight cost down and keep more money in your pocket.

Use A Flight-Finding App

I recently discovered the smartphone app called Hopper . If I have a flight to book, it’s the most valuable tool I use to ensure I get the best price.

After entering in your search criteria, Hopper tells you what the prices are like, how they’re trending, and when will be best to book. Hopper continues to monitor the prices and alerts you when they’re at the lowest price that their sophisticated prediction mechanisms have determined.

I will say, don’t try too hard to get the rock bottom price that Hopper predicts will happen. If you’re within $20 or so dollars of their lowest price prediction, just book it. I waited once and got burned when the prices never went back down.

And while I generally insist on booking airfare directly with the airline, I also discovered that Hopper occasionally offers even better prices than the airline does! I saved almost 40% off the cost of a short-haul flight by booking directly with the Hopper app, and everything went smoothly.

Opt For Stopovers Rather Than Direct Flights

We try to save money on long haul flights by choosing stopovers rather than direct flights. A great tool to use for this hack is Google Flights .

Go to Google Flights and enter your route and preferred date of travel. When the prices pop up, go to the calendar overview and look at all the pricing options around your preferred date. Cheaper rates are usually flights with stopovers.

We examine these flight times to see which flights have short stopover times and do not involve overnight stays – stopovers with three children in tow can be a lot of hassle and added expense if not planned carefully.

Sometimes there are other added bonuses too! For example, on our round-the-world trip, we utilized this hack to fly from Honolulu to Christchurch in New Zealand. Flights were very expensive and most ‘direct’ flights involved either returning to Los Angeles or flying further to double back to Christchurch, changing planes in Auckland or Sydney.

We found a cheap flight with Fiji Airways that stopped in Apia, Samoa and Nadi, Fiji, with only very short stops involved. It was perfect but then we decided to contact the airline to find out if we could extend the stopover. We discovered we were allowed to extend the stopover at one of the two locations for no extra cost.

We ended up spending the money we saved on a ‘direct’ flight (over one thousand dollars) on a fantastic two weeks exploring Samoa!

Use Dollar Flight Club To Snag Deals

One of the best cheap flight hacks that will not only save you money but also reduce the amount of time you spend searching for airfares online is to sign up to Dollar Flight Club.

The online service sends you the best flight deals directly to your email or via SMS-based on the preferences you select when you sign up. Their premium plan allows you to pick any number of departure airports, ideal destinations and preferred airlines and will send you any deals they find as soon as they become available.

You can also log in to a dashboard and see any deals that you have been sent that are still active or have expired. Any deals that Dollar Flight Club sends you direct you to Google Flights, which means that the deal is available directly through the airline’s website and not through any third party that might have extra hidden fees.

Dollar Flight Club is most worth signing up to if you’re a frequent international traveler who predominantly chooses to fly economy — they don’t typically send domestic or business fares. To be able to take advantage of the deals you get sent, it is recommended to have some flexibility on departure dates and the departure or destination airport.

Book Cheaper Tickets On Student Universe

If you’re a student or young person, there’s an entire website devoted to helping you find cheap flights called Student Universe. All you need to do to start finding discounts on flights around the world is to create an account on Student Universe , then confirm your age and/or student status by submitting some basic documents.

Their mission is to encourage young people to travel the world, and I’ve had great success with Student Universe flights over the years including a return trip to London for about $200.

To get the cheapest deals, simply choose the “Flexible” option when searching for dates. This will give you the cheapest flights within a range of about a week either way, and the absolute rock bottom deals are marked with a diamond shape.

If you’re not a student, Student Universe can still get you cheap flights. For instance, if you’re between the ages of 16 and 25, there are also “young person” fares that you can take advantage of.

If you’re a teacher or college faculty member, you will be eligible for additional cheap fares as well. And finally, if none of the above apply to you, or perhaps you graduate soon – don’t worry! There are still cheap flights to be found in the “Adult” fare section of Student Universe, so it’s worth a shot to check them out.

Don’t Avoid Flying On Holidays

If you need to fly during peak periods, such as the holidays, flights tend to be more expensive compared to other times of the year. A great hack for traveling over the holidays is to try to fly on an actual holiday, such as Christmas Day.

If you don’t mind spending part of the day traveling, you can often save money this way, as it’s not generally a desirable time to fly. I’ve done several flights on Thanksgiving and Christmas Days, and have definitely saved money compared to flying a day or two before or after.

It wasn’t bad at all flying on the holidays, as I found most people were in a happy and festive mood, making the airport and flight a bit more fun.

If you are flying over school holidays, the same principle applies – if you are able to time your trip to start or end a few days before the start or after the end of the holidays, you are likely to find better deals. Not always possible for families though, I know!

Definitely shop around as much as you can if you’re traveling over the holidays- although it is generally more expensive, good fares can still be found with a bit of searching and flexibility.

Ditch Your Big Suitcase

One of the best tricks I’ve learned in my travels is the art of packing carry-on only. However, the goalpost on what exactly airlines allow on flights seems to constantly keep moving.

Budget airlines in Europe like Ryanair first started putting restrictions on cabin bag size, and then airlines in the U.S. followed suit by offering “Basic Economy” fares that even charged for an overhead bin-sized carry-on. Now, you can only bring a small underseat bag for free on most flights — a long way away from the free checked bag of the old days!

As a result, I’ve had to get a bit savvier with my packing when planning short jaunts and I’ve streamlined my packing style to match. I’ve started using a bag that fits under the seat in front of me on airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air in Europe and Spirit and United Airlines back in the U.S.

Using underseat luggage means that you’ll pay the bare minimum baseline fare and not have to pay for pricy upgrades. These upgrades can range anywhere from a more reasonable $7 or so on Wizz Air or Ryanair for a priority upgrade booked in advance, to a more price-gouging $25 service fee plus checked baggage fee on United (yikes!) if you try to bring your carry-on to the gate.

Either way, knowing exactly what you’re allowed to bring on board makes a huge difference, as any packing mistakes you make at the airport can become quite costly!

Compare Flights On Kiwi

One of my biggest lifesavers, Kiwi.com is a savior for us travelers. The best thing about Kiwi.com is that it allows you to check the flight costs for more than 1 destination at the time. And it gives you a broad area for searching the dates and airports. In fact, I can choose the entire country so that I know which city will give me the cheapest flight options.

Here is what you need to do. Go to Kiwi.com and choose your country in the ‘From’ box. Then, fill in a couple of countries which you are planning to go to in the ‘Destination’ section. And for the ‘Departure’ dates, choose the date range option.

For the date range option, you can click on a date and then drag it to another date which you want your range to be. Finally, choose Trip Length option in ‘Return’ and select the tentative number of days you are planning to stay. That’s it.

Kiwi.com will give you a list of the cities with varying dates and duration and you can simply choose the cheapest one out of it.

Now, you can book the flight directly from Kiwi.com or you can find the same carrier and dates on another site where you might get some discount. But honestly, this is one of the best ways to find cheap flights for your desired destination.

Consider Different Airports Near Your Destination

Check prices from airports that are within a few hours’ drive of your departure city and destination. Sometimes you can find much cheaper (or more direct) flights from a nearby airport.

This can be especially helpful if the other airport is in a different country. For example, I live in Seattle, so I check flights out of both Seattle and Vancouver. Canada has different airlines than we do, and the exchange rate comes into play. The flights from Vancouver are almost always a better deal.

Flying from Vancouver requires that I drive 3 hours north, and pay to park the car. Even taking that into account, I sometimes save hundreds by doing so. Then I spend at least a few hours in Vancouver at either the beginning or end of my trip, and it’s like a bonus getaway!

Similarly, if I’m going to Europe, I almost always fly into Amsterdam. It’s a relatively cheap direct flight from Seattle, and it’s easy and cheap to jump from there to anywhere else in Europe.

Google Flights makes it especially easy to check multiple airports at a time. Make sure you’re aware of any visa requirements if you’re looking at flying into or out of a different country.

Include nearby airports in your next flight search – you might be surprised what you can find!

Use Airline Websites In Their Native Language

When you are searching for flights on an airline’s website it is a great idea to perform the search in that countries native language as opposed to the translated website in English. Many airlines offer their website in English as well as their own native language but sometimes the English translated website is more expensive!

I first found out about this when I was backpacking in Brazil . I was looking for a domestic flight and found that not only were flights cheaper on the Portuguese website but there were also more flights to choose from! When I hit the “English” button the prices changed and I had fewer choices.

Booking a flight on a website in a different language can be easier said than done though (especially if you don’t speak the language of the website your booking on.) The best way to do this is to get a local hotel or hostel staff member to give you a hand for a moment when booking your flights. Otherwise, Google Translate will be your best friend.

I have found this hack works best on domestic flights and is less likely to be useful for international flights. But regardless, it is a great thing to check and has literally saved me hundreds of dollars!

Book Your Flights 6-12 Weeks Ahead

One of the most consistent ways I’ve found to get cheap flights (whether domestic or international) is to book the tickets at just the right time. In my experience, booking tickets six to twelve weeks in advance of your departure date is the most reliable way to snatch up those juicy deals.

If I’m able to plan ahead, I typically start checking prices around three to four months in advance which will give me a baseline current prices.

Additionally, you can also do some general research on forums and around the Internet for what a ticket from, let’s say, LAX (Los Angeles) to BOM (Mumbai) usually costs, and then you’ll have a way to know if the prices you’re seeing are a good deal or not. In this example, a fantastic deal would be under $700, while a normal ticket will cost you around $1,000 or more.

So, if when you’re looking three months in advance, you see a deal for $657 – I would book it right then and there. Whereas, if it’s saying $1,500 then I would wait until the six to twelve week window and it will almost certainly be way cheaper than $1,500.

This tip has definitely saved many thousands of dollars over the past fifteen years of international travel.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, and they're all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

As a travel writer, I take great pride in my collection of in-flight and vacation packing must-haves that I refuse to leave my house without in the name of prioritizing comfort. I believe that even the shortest trips should still be as enjoyable as possible, and although I’m at a point where I feel both safe and relaxed while traveling, there’s always room to improve.

Since I don’t believe in gatekeeping, I’ve rounded up the five Amazon essentials that have transformed my travels for the better now that I have thousands of frequent flier miles under my belt — plus, the five items I can’t wait to buy next. From solo trips to vacations with friends, these products are guaranteed to make you feel more prepared for whatever may come — with prices starting as low as $8.

She’s Birdie The Original Personal Safety Alarm

Whether I’m enjoying my day-to-day life in New York City or traveling internationally on a solo trip to Portugal, I will never leave the house without this portable safety device firmly clipped to my keychain. The simple mechanism is designed to emit a blaring alarm once the pin is pulled, and after testing it on a number of occasions (never in an emergency, thankfully), I can confirm that it’s loud enough to draw attention from passersby for peace of mind if I’m in a compromising situation and need help. It’s great for travel — even by plane — and the device is secure enough that in my three years of owning it, I’ve never had the alarm go off by accident.

AiRunTech Waterproof Waist Pouch

Last year, I went on my first solo trip to Portugal , which left me in the unique predicament of figuring out how to enjoy my time splashing around in the surf without getting my gear stolen. Enter: the AiRunTech Waterproof Waist Pouch. This entirely waterproof pouch was perfect for keeping my phone and wallet safe during boat rides and dips in the ocean, so I never had to worry about returning to the shore only to find myself stranded without my essentials. I can confidently say that even when I’m traveling with friends, I’ll never leave my house for a beach vacation without this bag again — and right now, a two-pack is on sale at Amazon for a mere $13.

Anker Portable Charger

After a debacle last year during which my AirPods died ahead of my flight with no access to an outlet, I promptly ordered the top-selling Anker Portable Charger upon my arrival home and will never travel without it again. It’s not a given that you’ll be able to charge your phone or devices during a flight (or even at the airport), and whether you’re traveling alone or with friends, it’s always important to have access to your phone for safety purposes. This long-lasting charger boasts the capacity for more than two full charges and is designed with three ports so I can provide power to my phone and headphones at the same time.

SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA Laptop Backpack

I’ve been using this spacious laptop backpack since 2015, so it’s safe to say that it has stood the test of time throughout adventures across dozens of states and countries. The large main compartment has more than enough space for everything from a spare outfit to a ski helmet (it didn’t fit in my suitcase!), and a padded laptop compartment ensures that I never have to worry about damaging my electronics while I’m on the go. Plus, the variety of additional pockets on the sides and front of this comfortable backpack have proven to be the ideal spots to store my toiletries, medications, and other items for maximum organization and accessibility.

Hian Motion Sickness Glasses

Ever since my childhood, I’ve been plagued with motion sickness, and over the years it’s become nearly impossible for me to get into a car without the accompanying nausea and dizziness. However, that all changed when I discovered these glasses from Hian last year, and since then there hasn’t been a single trip I’ve taken without them. From a long, stop-and-go ride up to Breckenridge in Colorado, to a quick trip to Jones Beach in New York, these glasses stopped my reliance on Dramamine in its tracks. Plus, they’re only $8.

What I’m Buying Next

Cabeau tne s3 travel neck pillow.

One of my hidden talents is that I can fall asleep nearly anywhere: plane, train, car, you name it. However, the catch is that while I may be soundly sleeping, my head continues to bob around, often resulting in a stiff neck upon arrival at my destination (not to mention it’s embarrassing). So, when I recently stumbled upon a neck pillow that attaches to the airplane headrest to firmly secure me in place, I knew I needed to add it to my shopping list ahead of my next flight. This incredibly supportive pillow from Cabeau is the solution I’ve been searching for when it comes to keeping my head propped up, and it’s adjustable for a wide range of travelers. It may be $50, but that’s a small price to pay for feeling well-rested after a red-eye.

Jisulife Handheld Mini 3-in-1 Fan

This best-selling 3-in-1 fan from Jisulife has been sitting in my Amazon cart for months now, but before I head to the beach this summer — or even the wedding I’m attending in August — I’ll be sure to finally make the purchase. Not only is this compact device a high-powered fan that easily fits into a back pocket, purse, or carry-on, but it also functions as a portable phone charger and flashlight. It offers up to 19 hours of cooling on a single charge, a fact which I can attest to since my friend brought it along with us on an unbearably hot trip to Italy several years ago. With two settings to choose from, it’s great even if you just need a light breeze.

Soundcore Anker Life Hybrid Active Noise-Canceling Headphones

More often than not, I find myself drawn into conversations with my seatmates on planes — and not always by choice. I will blame this in part on my friendly face, but also my lack of noise-canceling headphones. So while my AirPods will also be my go-to earbuds, I’m ready to make the investment in these Soundcore over-ear headphones while they’re on sale for just $50 at Amazon. Memory foam ear cups promise to provide unending comfort during even the longest flights, while 40 hours of play time on a single charge means there’s one less charger I’ll need to pack while on vacation. I can already sense that my most peaceful flight to date is right around the corner.

BleedStop First Aid Powder for Blood Clotting

I’m a relatively neurotic traveler, and after reading a recent article on Travel + Leisure touting this blood clotting powder as a must-pack according to a retired doctor, I immediately added the $15 formula to my cart. While it’s highly improbable that I’ll ever need to use it, this powder works to get bleeding under control in mere minutes, making it incredibly useful if I, or anyone around me, incurs a potentially life-threatening wound while hiking or in another scenario where medical aid isn’t readily available. Better safe than sorry.

Twelve South AirFly SE Bluetooth Audio Transmitter

With the amount that I’ve been traveling recently, it feels worthwhile to invest in this audio transmitter that will allow me to wear my AirPods while enjoying the in-flight entertainment, so I can say farewell to airline-issued headphones for good. The AirFly simply plugs into the screen on your airplane seatback, connecting to up to two pairs of headphones at the same time. I’m especially excited to use this device because it’s entirely cord-free, so I won’t become tangled with any of my seatmates if they need to head to the bathroom during the flight.
