How to Travel From Zurich to Paris by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

travel from switzerland to paris

Wedged between Germany and Italy , Switzerland is a popular side trip from France. Zurich is the gateway to this famously scenic country. The waterfront city sits about 55 miles (89 kilometers) by road from the nearest French city, Saint-Louis, and 375 miles (603 kilometers) from Paris, the landmark-laden portal to Europe. To get from Zurich to Paris , you can hop aboard an easy hour-and-15-minute flight, a high-speed train, or a budget-friendly bus. If you go by car, you have the opportunity to stop by such iconic destinations as Burgundy (for the wine, of course) and historical Vezelay along the way.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Zurich to Paris?

The cheapest way to get from Zurich to Paris is by bus. Unfortunately, this is also the most time-consuming option, requiring a minimum of eight hours. Nonetheless, tickets start around $28—the earlier you book, the better. FlixBus and Eurolines both run the route regularly (departing at least once per day), but Eurolines, although slightly pricier, tends to take less time than FlixBus.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Zurich to Paris?

The fastest way to get from Zurich to Paris is by flying. According to Skyscanner , there are seven airlines that offer direct flights from Zurich Airport to Paris' three: Charles de Gaulle , Orly , and Beauvais. SWISS and Air France are popular options. The flight takes about an hour and 15 minutes and tickets start at $90. There are more than 50 direct flights per week to choose from.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

In smooth traffic conditions, it takes about six and a half hours or more to get from Zurich to Paris by car, but driving is a nice way to explore the scenic stretches of Switzerland and Eastern France on your own time. The shortest distance is 375 miles (603 kilometers) via the A5, but you can also go by way of Beaune to the south (the centerpiece of France's Burgundy wine region) or Reims to the north (the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine region). Expect to pay toll fees ( ViaMichelin estimates a total of $24 for the A5 route) at several points throughout the trip.

How Long Is the Train Ride?

The train is an easy, convenient, and fairly cheap way to get between Zurich and Paris. France's TGV train travels at speeds of 357 miles (574 kilometers) per hour, covering the distance between Zürich Hauptbahnhof and Paris Gare De Lyon in just over four hours. According to Rail Europe , there is an average of 11 trains traveling this route per day (between the times of 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.) and tickets can be found for as little as $33.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Paris?

Summer is peak tourist season for Paris, which means that buses, trains, and flights are destined to be full during this time. You're better off going between April and June (you may even see the cherry blossoms in bloom) or October, when the crowds are lighter and the weather is still warm enough to sightsee comfortably. To save extra money, book your bus, train, or plane tickets early.

What’s the Most Scenic Route to Paris?

If you have some time on your hands, you can choose a more scenic route over the direct A5. To the north, you'll go through the Champagne winemaking region (including Reims and Épernay) whereas a more southern route will take you through the valleys and slopes of the Burgundy region and the village of Vezelay, a UNESCO World Heritage site , before spitting you out in Paris. These routes add between 30 and 50 miles (50 and 80 kilometers) onto the trip, but they're worth it.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Paris?

Switzerland and France are both included in the Schengen Area, a collection of 26 European states that have mutual borders. U.S. passport holders can visit this region for up to 90 days without a visa.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

The $11  RER  B line is the best way to travel into the center from Charles de Gaulle Airport. It departs every 10 to 20 minutes from Terminals 1 and 2 and takes 35 minutes to get to the city. It takes a little longer—roughly an hour—to get into Paris from Orly. Because there is no direct train line, passengers should take the Orlyval metro to Anthony Train Station, then transfer to the RER (lines B or C). It costs about $13 one way.

Getting from Beauvais into town is the most time consuming. The best option is an 80-minute shuttle bus that departs approximately 20 minutes after every flight arrival and drops off less than a kilometer from the Arc de Triomphe.

What Is There to Do in Paris?

There's something for everyone in Paris. The foodie, the history buff, the fashion-obsessed, the art lover—all are accounted for in this culture-rich metropolis. Besides the famous landmarks (the Eiffel Tower , the Louvre , the Arc de Triomphe , Notre Dame Cathedral , and Champs-Élysées ) there's the endless avenues of pâtisseries, cheese stalls, and falafel houses to get lost in. The Latin Quarter, Le Marais, and Montmartre are popular neighborhoods to walk around, too. If you want to be kept busy, the Paris Museum Pass offers access to 50 museums and monuments for a flat rate.

Top airlines flying from Zurich to Paris

The plane was so hot upon boarding. Their boarding process was so unnecessarily long. Service was subpar.

Everything from the price to online checkin and the flight being on time to the crew and food was very good. The comfort level is fine--the seats are very close to each other in Economy. But I guess you get what you pay for.

Swiss ground crew was again at its prime and although I’m United 1K (Star Alliance Gold) they created problems with my hand luggage - while other passengers were boarding with more handbags and larger hand luggages, were critical on my 2 young kids attending the lounge with me and boarding the plane with me on the priority lane.

Horrible experience. I was apparently picked at random for a security screening - that was the most demeaning experience I have had in my life with a guy poking and prodding and having me take off my shoes, move up my pants so he could swab my legs - telling me I couldn't bring more than some quantity of cookies - I had 3 boxes of cookies in my luggage. In the end he did let me keep them but that was really uncalled for. Harrassment in the name of security.

They went out of their way. It was very clean and friendly.

I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. Thank you

There were multiple delays and the food was poor. Better food.

Wheelchair was the excellent service. I didn’t have any food or used entertainment. Overall for my trip experience was excellent. Thank you very much and keep up good work. Best regards

Not exceptional but all good. Business class seats are like the domestic Mint class on Jet Blue. Comfortable but not exceptional. Food is good but not superb. Flight attendants were better on India leg than Miami to Zurich. All India staff was more professional and service oriented. Very polite and service with a smile.

Liked being hydrated. Carryon weight was limited for cold weather clothes that are heavy... could test to improve if possible.

Generally good. The crew is excellent. The food could be better.

Did not find the wheelchair that supposed to assist and went to a long queue for transit security chk which was very slow and boarding desk wanted to close counter although that they knew that I am minutes away because of their mistake of not providing the wheelchair.

Boarding was smooth and on time. The seat was comfortable and the entertainment worked. Staff were gracious.

Business class in the second leg - CDG-EVN was a disaster.

I have used Air France and KLM many times it will help if they change their menu's feel like it's been the same for years!!!, Especially the breakfast. Overall the flight was good and enjoyable.

No birding was given for next trip on same carrier, food was very moderate.

We transited through Chad and what was supposed to be a 1hr 20 minutes transit time lasted over 4hrs. We didn't get regular updates until we complained. After a 10hr flight from Paris no form of refreshment given and finally arrived Abuja over 6hrs later and none of my bags came

The line at boarding was not well organized and managed

Sky priority means you get to use the KLM business Lounge.

Je n'ai pas pû incliner mon siège et une des hôtesses ne comprenait pas ce que je disais. Je devais parler fort

Bern to Paris Travel Options (Train, Bus, Car)

Driving to Paris

When it comes to traveling from Bern to Paris, there are several transportation options available. Whether you’re seeking speed, comfort, or flexibility, there’s a choice that suits your preferences.

From the convenience of high-speed TGV trains to the flexibility of driving, this post will help you explore the various ways to journey from the charming Swiss capital of Bern to the iconic city of Paris in France.

So, let’s go and explore your travel choices for this exciting route.

Key Takeaways

  • Train: 4-5 hours, costing 120-220 CHF with various connections
  • Bus: 13-15 hours, costing 25-70 Euros.
  • Car: 570km, taking between 6-7 hours without traffic

Table of Contents

Bern to Paris by Train

  • Journey time: Approximately 4.5-5 hours
  • Cost: CHF 120 – 220

Traveling from Bern to Paris by train is a scenic journey from Switzerland’s heart to France’s famous capital. This train route offers both convenience and comfort, allowing you to enjoy the picturesque landscapes.

There are several options when traveling from Bern. From one to two changes on the way.

The best connection is via Basel, where there is a direct train to Paris. Bern to Basel is approximately 1 hour. The TGV from Basel to Paris is about 3 hours. Connection time is 30 minutes.

These trains run just after the hour and usually every second hour. But check the SBB schedule to be sure.

Via Basel & Strassbourg

The second-best connection is similar in length but has an extra change in Strasbourg. The first two trains are slower local Swiss and French trains, with the last train being a TGV. This makes the journey often cheaper depending on how busy it is.

Via Olten & Basel

The last option runs at around half past the hour and travels via Olten and Basel. This also uses the TGV train from Basel, which is fast and convenient. However, there is one more change in Olten to get to Basel.

The downside of this connection is that it takes 30 minutes longer.

Bern to Paris by Bus

  • Journey Time: Approximately 13-15 hours
  • Cost: CHF 25 – 70

Traveling by bus provides a budget-friendly option with flexibility and still gives you the option of relaxing and admiring the passing scenery. However, it is a lot slower than by train (because the TGV is so fast and direct).

It is significantly cheaper though, with one-way tickets costing as little as 23 Euros.

Departure and arrival points:

  • Starting at the Bern ZOB (Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof) or the main bus terminal in the city. Verify the exact departure location, which may vary depending on the bus company.
  • The specific arrival point can vary depending on the bus company. Paris has several bus stations, including Bercy , Gallieni , and Porte Maillot , which are well-connected to the city’s public transportation network.

Companies like Flix Bus drive from Bern to Paris for as little as 23 Euros. You can find the schedule here .

Bern to Paris by Car

  • Journey time: 6 to 7 hours
  • Distance: 570km

Driving by car gives you the most flexibility to get from Bern to Paris, but it can be a lot more stressful. Once you have left Bern, the traffic eases for a while, but you have to leave Switzerland via Basel which can get busy at peak times. You also have to pass Dijon in France on the way, which is a large city.

Of course, navigating through a big city like Paris is no joke either. So, I recommend considering train or bus instead if you can.

Also be aware that France loves road tolls. They are quite common on the major highways and not cheap either. So, that will add to the cost of your trip once you leave Switzerland.

You can avoid the toll roads, and I have done that in the past. However, they offer the fastest route with the least traffic (as everyone else is avoiding paying too).

A Zürich, Switzerland Land Trip With Viking River Cruise

D uring our unforgettable Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise with Viking River Cruises, my husband (Eddie) and I found ourselves in the captivating city of Zürich, Switzerland. Although I had been to Switzerland before, Zürich was an unexplored gem. Viking River Cruises seamlessly transported us from the cruise ship to the hotel, and later to the airport, as part of their all-inclusive package.

Zürich bewitched us with its mesmerizing beauty and undeniable charm, despite being notoriously expensive. Over the course of our two-day stay, we eagerly immersed ourselves in the city’s delights, making the most of the complimentary walking tour and invigorating boat ride organized by Viking River Cruises. Allow me to share a glimpse of what awaits you on your visit to Zürich.

Read more about the 12 day river cruise here.

Zürich Scenery

Breathtaking scenery unfurls in every direction in Zürich. Whether it be the grandeur of the architectural masterpieces or the vibrant façades of historical buildings, the snow-capped Swiss Alps serving as a backdrop or the enchanting cobblestone streets that wound their way through the city, there is no shortage of picturesque moments that will prompt your camera to work overtime.

Zürich is an incredible city to explore on foot. Without even realizing it, we covered an impressive seven miles in a single day, diligently recorded by our trusty Fitbit. Such was the pleasure derived from our stroll that the concept of distance faded away, leaving us fully engrossed in the awe-inspiring ambiance that unfolded at every turn.

The Food in Zürich

Switzerland is renowned for its exquisite culinary offerings, with one of my personal favorites being cheese. Everywhere you go, you’ll encounter a plethora of exotic cheese choices. During my visit, indulging in authentic Swiss cheese fondue at the Swiss Chuchi Restaurant , nestled in the heart of the old town, was a must for me and my companion Eddie.

We opted for the traditional recipe, combining Vaudois cheese, white wine, cherry liquor, and garlic, resulting in a gastronomic delight that exceeded all expectations.

Another popular cheese delicacy in Zürich is raclette, which has recently gained popularity even in American eateries. While exploring the town, we noticed numerous raclette shops scattered around, its tantalizing aroma captivating our senses well before catching sight of it.

It’s worth noting that dining in Zürich can be quite costly. Simple meals often came with a hefty price tag of $24, and even a small bottled soda would cost between $4 and $7 at our hotel. Surprisingly, beer turned out to be more economical than both water and soda.

However, in the old town, we stumbled upon a gem called Blue Monkey —a delightful Thai restaurant boasting chic decor and offering a lunch buffet priced at $26 per person. I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment for an exquisite culinary experience.

Overall, Switzerland’s gastronomic offerings, particularly its cheese creations, exceeded all expectations, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my culinary adventure in this beautiful country.

Parade Square

Eddie and I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through Paradeplatz (Parade Square) located in downtown Zürich. This upscale district is renowned for its exceptional shopping opportunities and the chance to observe people in action.

Parade Square places fashion and accessories at center stage, while home accents come in a close second.

If you happen to be staying outside the downtown area, fret not as getting there is incredibly convenient via the tram system. Coming from someone who seldom relies on public transportation, I can attest to its ease of use.

Tram stations provide instructions in English and accept credit cards. They are maintained well, operate efficiently, and offer a superb means of traversing Zürich. As you journey through the city, do observe the dignified architecture and stunning floral displays that grace its streets.

Lake Zürich

During our Viking River post-cruise excursion, we had the pleasure of embarking on a delightful boat ride around the picturesque Lake Zurich. The boat tour commences from Bürkliplatz and extends for approximately 90 minutes.

With both indoor and outdoor seating options, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the serene lake and majestic, snow-capped mountains.

Our route led us to the charming medieval town of Rapperswil, featuring a captivating 12th-century castle gracefully perched on a hillside across the lake. If desired, passengers had the flexibility to disembark in Rapperswil and catch a later boat back into town.

Undoubtedly, the boat ride boasts exceptional scenery, allowing guests to relish the rejuvenating fresh air. Moreover, this memorable experience came at no cost for Viking River Cruise guests, ensuring that you seize the opportunity to partake in it.

Our Zürich Hotel

During our Viking River Cruise, we had the pleasure of being accommodated at the Sheraton Zürich Hotel , an elegant and sophisticated establishment situated in a cosmopolitan district. The rooms provide a comfortable sitting area, heavenly beds, an ergonomic desk and work area, a mini-fridge, and a refreshing shower, ensuring a pleasant stay.

To the delight of cruise ship guests, Viking offers a complimentary breakfast in a private space at the hotel, which proved to be a significant money-saving opportunity. Moreover, the Sheraton Hotel’s convenient location near the Toni-Areal tram station opens up a plethora of possibilities for exploring the city.

Zürich, Switzerland: One for the Books!

Zürich itself is known for its stunning scenery, making it a lovely city to visit. As part of Switzerland, a truly breathtaking country with an abundance of attractions, Zürich stands out as my favorite city thus far.
