London Paris Itinerary: The Ultimate List You Should Steal

Looking for a London-Paris itinerary?

If you want to visit London, England, and Paris, France, on the same trip, you are in for a real treat! I’ve taken a trip from London to Paris and loved it!

These are two of my favorite cities and I have visited them both multiple times. They are fun, lively cities full to the brim with iconic sights!

I’ll share tips for the best tips for your London-Paris trip including how to travel between the cities, things to do, and where to stay.

I am giving equal time to both cities. However, how many days in London and Paris you spend is up to you.

Now, let’s dive into this epic London and Paris itinerary!

London, England, United Kingdom

Day one:  visit london’s iconic sites, stop 1: trafalgar square.

World-famous Trafalgar Square is in Central London. It is a great place to begin your London-Paris itinerary.

Named after a British naval victory, there is quite a bit to see around here. There is a large statue honoring Admiral Nelson, guarded by four lions.

Stop 2 : Discover The Warped Window

Located adjacent to Trafalgar Square is St. Martin in the Fields Church .

The window over the main altar was destroyed by the World War II bombings in London. The replacement is a unique display of contemporary art with an important message.

The simple glass and metal windows look so different compared to the opulent Baroque interior of the church.

The vertical and horizontal lines in the glass window form a cross with an opening in the center that permits light to enter the church.

Stop 3: Visit The National Gallery

A great number of museums in London do not charge admission fees. Take advantage of this during your London trip by treating yourself to the fabulous exhibits at the National Gallery .

Located on the north end of Trafalgar Square, this museum houses some of the most impressive collections of artwork in the world. They are presented in chronological order.

There are free guided tours or you can rent an audio guide for a small fee.

I would advise you to get a map as there are many exhibits and multiple floors. This way you will be assured you will find what you are interested in.

Stop 4 : Visit The Smallest Police Station In The UK

This decommissioned police station is located in the southeast corner of Trafalgar Square. It has quite an interesting history!

Trafalgar Square has long been a gathering space for Londonites to gather to protest. This light post-turned-police station has narrow slits in it so a policeman could keep an eye out on the crowds.

This interesting historical gem should be on your London-Paris itinerary!

Stop 5: Walk Down Whitehall Street

Head south from Trafalgar Square and you will find Whitehall Street . It is considered London’s “political” street. Be on the lookout as you meander because there will be several iconic sights to see.

You will see Downing Street , where the Prime Minister lives. You cannot visit it. However, you can head to 10 Adams Street which looks similar. Snap a souvenir picture here.

You will soon come to the Cenotaph Memorial. It is a monument honoring the fallen from WWI and WWII.

Soon Whitehall Street merges with Parliament Street and you will be at Bridge Street.

If you gaze straight ahead, you will see the Houses of Parliament. To your right is Westminster Abby. To your left is Westminster Bridge and the Thames River.

Truly all iconic London gems you do not want to miss seeing on your London and Paris trip!

Stop 6: Find History at Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is where royalty is crowned where Prince William married Kate Middleton.

The church is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. Within the abbey are monuments and memorials given to British citizens throughout history.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is inside Henry VII’s Chapel. It is dedicated to the British soldiers killed during World War II.

Viewing Westminster Abbey from the outside or touring the inside is a must on your London-Paris itinerary!

Stop 7 : See the Parliament Building and Big Ben

Not surprisingly, the Parliament Building with Big Ben is the most iconic, well-known, and most frequently visited site in London.

The Houses of Parliament Building is also called Westminster Palace . Tours are offered or you can rent an audio guide and take a self-tour.

The vertical tower where the huge bell we call Big Ben is housed is named Elizabeth Tower . It chimes on the hour and has rarely missed. It was however interrupted during the world wars.

These iconic attractions should not be missed during your London vacation!

Stop 8: Ride the London Eye

Riding the Coca-Cola London Eye is an unforgettable experience! Nothing quite compares to seeing London from the massive Ferris wheel.

Located within walking distance from the Parliament Building, it is on the banks of the Thames River.

The ride stands an impressive 443 feet high and was built in 1999 to welcome the new millennium. That is why you may hear it referred to as the Millenium Wheel.

One full slow rotation of the London Eye takes around 30 minutes. The aerial views of the River Thames and London are outstanding.

Day Two: Explore London’s Castles and Parks

Stop 1: visit buckingham palace.

Most everyone who visits London plans to visit Buckingham Palace , where the British Royal Family lives. The administrative office of the king along with manicured gardens are located at the palace.

Long a symbol for the British citizens, the palace is important to London during celebrations or sorrows.

You may be interested in watching the solemn changing of the guard ceremony. It is an iconic experience!

Be sure to check the dates and times of the ceremony on the palace website if you add it to your London-Paris itinerary.

Stop 2: Kensington Gardens

Located adjacent to Hyde Park’s western border (the largest royal park in London) are Kensington Gardens . They are 250 acres of wonderfully landscaped green space.

There are a few monuments worth seeking out at Kensington Gardens. One is the Prince Albert Memorial . Commissioned by Queen Victoria, it honors her husband upon his death.

The Diana Memorial Playground is a very popular monument in London.

Honoring the late Princess Diana it is located near Kensington Palace where her apartment was. The whimsical playground attracts lots of children to it. there is even an accessible area so everyone can play.

Stop 3 : Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace is where young royals have resided for over three hundred years.

At Kensington Palace, you can see the room where Queen Victoria was born and raised until she ascended to the British throne.

Located next to Kensington Gardens, you will have the feeling of stepping back in time. The State Rooms are available to tour. The private residences and offices are not.

There is also a Princess Diana exhibit and you can tour elegant royal apartments from the past where one is more exquisite than the next.

A visit to Kensington Palace is a must on your London-Paris itinerary. This is one of the top things to do in Kensington !

Stop 4: Visit Kyoto Gardens

Located about a mile from Kensington Palace you will find Holland Park . It is a 54-acre park, and here you will discover the Japanese-inspired Kyoto Gardens .

Established in the 1990s, the gardens were a gift to the people of Great Britain from the people of Japan. You will find rippling waterfalls spilling into ponds full of koi and peacocks meandering about.

Depending on the time of year of your London-Paris itinerary, you may also see blooming cherry blossoms. The park is free and open from dawn until right before dusk.

Stop 5: Take A Stroll In London’s Little Venice

Yes, London has its own Little Venice ! It is lively, quirky, and a great place to add to your London-Paris itinerary!

It is located where the Regent and Grand Union Canals meet, a smidge more than two miles from Holland Park. Where the two canals cross a small network of waterways is formed.

This area is called Little Venice . Known to the local Londonites, it is not widely known to most tourists, making it one of the top hidden gems in London !

Along with loads of restaurants and pubs, you can take a boat ride down the canals from April to November. You can also stroll the waterways to discover Regent’s Park or the London Zoo.

Take a rest at Rembrandt Gardens on benches among beautiful landscaping and look out onto Little Venice’s waterways.

Day Three: Explore More of London

Stop 1: learn history at the tower of london.

Another of London’s most popular attractions is the Tower of London . Famous and not-so-famous executions took place here. I suggest adding this attraction to your London-Paris itinerary.

It is usually very crowded, and a popular welcome tour is led by the Yeoman Warders (the “Beefeaters”).

Located on the north bank of the River Thames, there is an admission fee. It is best to purchase tickets online and in advance.

Certainly one of the more unusual places to visit in London , this historic building is a must-see!

Make sure you visit the Jewel House to see the Crown Jewels and the Medieval Palace. Also, look for the execution site where many killings took place.

Stop 2: Explore The Tower Bridge

Over 40,000 people cross the Thames River using the Tower Bridge every day.

You will learn the history of this mechanical masterpiece inside the Tower Bridge Rooms.

You will learn the stories of the unsung heroes who built and ran the original bridge.

Do not miss the panoramic views of London by walking the Glass Floor Walkway! It is 140 feet above the River Thames, 36 feet long, and almost 6 feet wide.

The Tower Bridge rooms are wheelchair accessible.

Stop 3: Find Views at Sky Garden

Less than one mile away from the Tower Bridge is Sky Garden ! It is a unique public space that is three stories tall. It offers uninterrupted 360* views of London! And best of all, it is FREE!

However, you must sign up for tickets online in advance. The number of people admitted is timed and regulated.

A limited number of tickets are issued each day, so please make sure you sign up early.

You will find impeccably manicured botanical-style gardens on every level.

But it is the panoramic view that will wow you! There are a few upscale restaurants and two bars for cocktails.

Stop 4: Head To The Shard

Head south across the River Thames to the building that looks like a large piece of glass. The Shard is one of the most unique buildings in London and is the tallest building in Europe.

There is a robust discussion about which place has the better London views, the Shard or Sky Garden! You should visit both during your London-Paris itinerary and decide for yourself!

Inside the Shard are offices, businesses, a five-star hotel, and the View From The Shard observation towers.

There is an admission fee charged for such an extravagant experience. However, nothing compares to seeing the London skyline from 800+ feet in the air.

Get your tickets online beforehand if you are able. Do not be late as tickets are dated and timed. Security is strict, but once you are inside, you can remain as long as you want.

Stop 5: Check Out Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus

Leicester Square is a pedestrian-friendly square located in London’s stylish West End. You will find shops to fit every budget from swanky to simple. The same thing applies to restaurants, bars, and clubs.

If you are a Broadway lover and like musicals or dramatic performances then London’s West End is the place to be for live theatre performances.

You want to research what is playing at the theatres on your London and Paris trip, as shows sell out frequently.

Check out the nearby Piccadilly Circus , similar to Times Square in NYC with bright lights and screens on the buildings.

Stop 6: Fashionable Covent Garden

Less than one mile from Leicester Square is Covent Garden . It is also in London’s fashionable West End and offers a more upscale shopping experience.

Once a fruit and vegetable garden, it is a must-see destination on your London trip. There is live entertainment by street performers, mostly on the weekends, and shops, restaurants, and pubs.

On the weekends, stalls are set up and locals display their authentic handmade wares. Support local!

Stop 7: Shopping at Neal’s Yard

Neal’s Yard is an interesting little street adjacent to Covent Garden.

The colorful buildings are so bright and attractive. If you travel from London to Paris at the right time of the year, you may see decorative flowering plants adorning the buildings.

A sanctuary for garbage not long ago, Neal’s Yard has been cleaned up and renovated into one of London’s beautiful places !

The iconic Neal’s Yard Remedies is a flagship shop offering organic skin and body care products. You will also find independent shops and upscale boutiques.

There are several restaurants to select from as well!

Day 4: London’s Interesting and Iconic Sites

Stop 1: wander leadenhall market.

Located in London’s Financial District is the charming Leadenhall Market . This covered market has a lovely green, maroon, cream-painted roof, and cobblestone streets.

You will want to add this alluring covered market to your London-Paris Itinerary.

It is a popular tourist destination and can be busy. Leadenhall Market has been used in many movies, and most Harry Potter fans will recognize it.

The market sells fresh flowers and foods to tempt you. This may be the perfect place for breakfast as you begin your day.

Stop 2:  The Royal Exchange Is Full Of History

The Royal Exchange is also located in London’s Financial District and steps away from Leadenhall Market.

The current building was designed in the 1840s and before that, it was twice ruined by fires. Today the Royal Exchange is a dining and shopping destination.

Offering boutique shops and upscale dining, this historic location should be a consideration when planning your London-Paris itinerary.

Stop 3: Stand at the Same Place But Different Times

I am referring to the Greenwich Meridian at the Royal Conservatory in Greenwich.

The Greenwich Meridian is the actual line of the earth that separates east from west. This is the same way the equator differentiates north from the south.

It is an imaginary line in London that marks zero degrees longitude.

This is important as the Greenwich Meridian is the starting point of every time zone in the world.

This is one of the coolest things to do in Greenwich !

Stop 4: Grab an Instagram Pic On The Tulip Stairs

Also in Greenwich, only a few miles from the Greenwich Meridian, you will find the Queen’s Palace . There is no admission fee, and you will feel like you have stepped back in time.

Look for the stunningly blue Tulip Stairs for your picture. They are an architectural masterpiece from the seventeenth century.

It was the first self-supporting spiral staircase built in Great Britain.

Stop 5: Head To Harrods For A Signature Souvenir

Most everyone has heard of the most famous department store in the world: Harrods . Visiting Harrod’s is a top tourist pick when in London.

Harrods is the largest department store in Europe. It is well known for its signature service and luxurious shopping experience. You do not need to buy anything expensive!

The main London store has 330 departments and 23 restaurants. This is one of the best places to visit during Christmas in London !

You can grab a bite or a drink and rest awhile from your busy travel days.

TRAVEL DAY – How To Get From London To Paris

I have not scheduled anything for this travel day. This way you can schedule your travels to spend more or less time in either London or Paris.

Even though you will remain in the European Union, have your travel documents ready and available for customs and immigration officials.

There are several ways to travel from London to Paris. You can select between a train, ferry, bus, or car.

My family and I used the Eurostar , a high-speed train. It travels quickly through the Channel Tunnel (or Chunnel) from one country to another. It takes just over two hours.

I think this is the best way to get from London to Paris since it is efficient and a unique experience!

Select the best option for you and those traveling with you based on your schedule and budget.

However you travel, trips to Paris from London are easy and do not take long. You can also do this itinerary in reverse and travel from Paris to London instead.

Paris, France

Day one: begin with classic paris, stop 1: visit the eiffel tower.

Begin your Paris and London trip at arguably the most visited and well-known attraction in Paris: the Eiffel Tower !

The Eiffel Tower is over 1,000 feet tall and is one of the highest structures in Paris. Gustav Eiffel was the head engineer and it was the gateway to the 1889 World’s Fair held in Paris.

Today, it is recognized the world over as the symbol of Paris! You will certainly want to explore the Eiffel Tower so set aside plenty of time.

If seeing the most fantastic panoramic views of Paris interests you, then head inside the Eiffel Tower! You may climb the steps, or use the elevators.

Please know that purchasing tickets online well in advance is prudent for such a busy place. Some tickets add a “skip the line” perk. And of course, visiting in the offseason will mean fewer crowds.

If you are celebrating a special occasion during your London and Paris trip, there are lovely restaurants and bars within the Eiffel Tower on several levels.

Stop 2: Marvel At Artwork At Musee d’Orsay

Just a few minutes from the Eiffel Tower is the Musee d’Orsay . I admit it is possibly my favorite museum in Paris!

It opened in 1986 in Gare d’Orsay, an old railway station. It is a lovely location to add to your Paris and London itinerary.

You are certain to find some form of art that delights you here. Whether you prefer paintings, sculpture, architecture, or design, the museum offers extensive collections.

Most of the art is from 1948 until 1914. The most popular offerings at this museum are its Impressionist and Postimpressionist collections.

If looking for an Insta-worthy picture, seek out the see-through glass clock on the third floor. There is one that is unobstructed and lots of visitors clamor for a picture.

There is another within a restaurant that you may have access to only if you purchase something.

Stop 3: Explore The River Seine

Because the Eiffel Tower and Musee d’Orsay are both located on the Left Bank of the River Seine , it is good to set aside some time to explore the river.

You can walk and meander along lovely walkways. Mingle with other Parisians and tourists alike. Marvel at the lovely architecture of the amazing bridges in Paris .

It is fun to discover more about Paris on a Seine River cruise. Most of the cruises often are narrated. This is like having a private tour guide!

Depending on the weather, you can sit atop the ship for unobstructed views of the sights.

Most scenic ships have large windows below in their air-conditioned or heated interiors (depending on the weather).

Most cruise tours last an hour, and there are lunch, dinner, or champagne options.

Stop 4: Stroll the Jardin des Tuileries

The Jardin des Tuileries is located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concord. Established in the 1500s, the Tuilleries Gardens are where locals and tourists alike meet, stroll, and relax.

On one end, you will find the Palais de Louvre which houses the Louvre Art Museum, which will be featured in tomorrow’s portion of this 4 days in Paris itinerary .

At the other end of these magnificent gardens, you will find the beginning of the most well-known avenue in the world, the Champs-Elysees.

Stroll through tree-lined promenades and see lovely fountains as you travel through one of the most spectacular parks in Paris !

Day 2: See Iconic Sights in Paris

Stop 1: be amazed at the louvre.

No trip to the City of Lights would be complete without visiting the famous Louvre Art Museum . Located within the Palais de Louvre, this world-class museum houses the most impressive artifacts on earth.

Even if you only have 2 days in Paris , you must visit the Louvre!

When you approach, you will be greeted by the iconic glass pyramids. The largest pyramid is also the entrance to the museum.

The Louvre Museum is divided into 8 areas of exhibits, including paintings, prints, sculptures, and drawings. Some of the collections include Oriental, Roman, Greek, and Egyptian artifacts.

Once inside, secure a map to guide you to the specific collections that interest you. There is also an interpretive phone app you can download that contains a map and loads of information as well.

Not surprisingly, most visitors head to see Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece, Mona Lisa . She is housed in the Denon Wing.

A second highlight is the classical sculpture, Venus de Milo . From the fourth century B.C., this statue is of the goddess Aphrodite.

The Louvre is the largest and most visited museum in the world! I recommend you budget a few hours to a half day here. Lines for admission tickets can be long, so purchase tickets online beforehand.

Stop 2: Photogragh Le Deux Plateaux Art Installation

You will find the controversial outdoor art exhibit Le Deux Plateaux within walking distance from the Louvre.

More commonly referred to as Colonnes de Buren after the French artist who created it, Daniel Burren, it caused a bit of controversy when initially installed.

It is situated within the inner courtyard of the Palais Royal , a former 17th-century Neoclassical royal palace which is located adjacent to the Louvre.

Rows of columns of different sizes extending up out of the former parking lot were thought unsuitable for such a historical landmark.

Today, this outdoor exhibit is a very popular location! Tourists and locals alike wander through and it is a great place to snap an Insta-worthy picture with the black and white striped columns.

Stop 3: Stop At Jardin du Palais Royal

Just a short walk north of the art installation you will find the palace gardens Jardin du Palais Royal . This is a splendid spot to take a respite.

You will enjoy the beautifully manicured grounds, a large fountain, statues, and tree-lined walkways.

Depending on the season you visit, you will be rewarded with lovely blooming flowers!

Stop 4: Shop Like The Locals

Located steps away, take a few moments to shop as the Parisians do! What a great thing to add to your London-Paris Itinerary!

Head to the iconic covered passage Galerie Vivienne and its Neoclassical architecture. The beautiful mosaic floors and lovely canopy ceiling make this a location you do not want to miss.

Its popularity did diminish for a while due to the arrival of the Champs Elysees. But it is now making a comeback due to its cultural and historical importance.

There are a ton of epic covered passages in Paris to check out on your trip!

Day 3: The Finest Paris Has To Offer

Stop 1: the world famous champs elysees.

Head out to the ultra-fashionable Avenue des Champs-Elysees to visit one of the most well-recognized avenues on the planet. It has some of the richest real estate in the world!

The Champs Elysees extends from the Plaza de la Concord all the way to the Arc de Triomphe.

Upscale and not-so-upscale shops, cafes, and restaurants can be found on both sides of the street.

Stop 2: Climb the Arc De Triomphe For Epic Views

The Arc de Triomphe is found at Place Charles de Gaulle at the western terminus of the Champs Elysees. It is the center of 12 radiating avenues that help define Paris.

The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is here with an eternal flame commemorating those who died but were never identified.

Did you know you can walk up inside the Arc de Triomphe? There is an observation deck on the top level with beautiful views of the city.

The climb to the top is fairly difficult. Unfortunately, there is no elevator. Sadly, this is not the monument to bring the wheelchair-bound or anyone who cannot climb a lot of stairs.

There are multiple exhibits of French military history to stop and read.

This is such an interesting experience I suggest you add it to your London-Paris itinerary.

Stop 3: Be Wowed At The Paris Opera House

Also known as Opera Garnier , the Paris Opera House is so opulent it is often referred to as Palais Garnier. It is about 2 miles from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris’ Financial District.

This beautiful theatre has seats for almost 2,000 patrons. These days, the theatre is used mainly for ballet performances. It has been designated a French historical monument since the 1900s.

Arguably one of the most famous opera houses in the world, the Palais Garnier is also recognized as one of the major symbols of Paris.

Once inside, you can see the treasures of 19th-century theatre art. Guided tours are available or you are free to walk about on your own.

The Grand Staircase and the Gold Room are as opulent as can be!

Stop 4: Visit Galleries Lafayette

Located behind the Opera Garnier is the legendary Galleries Lafayette . It is a set of very fancy buildings connected by a series of bridges.

Visiting Galleries Lafayette is worth it to see the stunning Art Nouveau architecture and seasonal decorations. The Christmas tree in the main foyer is a must-see in Paris if you visit in December.

Do not miss out on taking a walk out on the Glasswalk.  It can be found on the third floor.

Walk out onto its 29-foot runway elevated 53 feet above the main floor for unequaled views of the main foyer space with its stunning stained glass dome.

Stop 5: Do Not Miss The Rooftop Terrace For Killer Views

One of the more spectacular things to add to your London-Paris itinerary is seeing Paris from the rooftop terrace of the Galleries Layafette.

Most tourists do not know about this unique opportunity!

It is one of the best locations for spectacular views that is free and open to the public! It is a fab place to take Insta-worthy photographs.

Day 4: Churches and Montmartre

Stop 1: stop by notre dame.

Arguably, the most famous cathedral in the world is Notre Dame de Paris . This church is recognized worldwide as a great example of French Gothic architecture.

She comes with an interesting history. The church took hundreds of years to construct.

UPDATE: Due to the fire in the spring of 2019, Notre Dame de Paris is closed. Please research updated information.  

Even though you cannot go inside, you will still want to visit Notre Dame while in Paris. She still draws large crowds and will still take your breath away.

Stop 2: Do Not Miss The Spectacular Sainte-Chapelle

Within walking distance of Notre Dame is the unbelievably beautiful Sainte-Chapelle . This is another must-see during your Paris-London travels.

The bottom rooms are ordinary, even plain-looking. That is because originally it was for the staff and servants of the French King that lived there.

Sainte-Chapelle’s upper level has over 1,000 dazzling gleaming stained glass windows.

They tell the story of the Bible. Fifteen main stained glass windows show over 1,000 scenes from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

You will find brochures available in several languages explaining each of the sumptuous windows in the main panels.

Also, you will find a beautiful rose window that describes the Book of Revelation through its stained glass panels.

Stop 3: Montmartre and Sacre-Coeur

The place to explore the bohemian and artistic district of Paris is Montmartre .

Located at the top of Montmartre, the highest point of Paris is Sacre-Coeur , the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Its architecture is much plainer than some, nor does this basilica display as much ornateness as other churches in Paris. Admission is free, but be respectful of the worship space when you visit.

Because of its location, there are MANY steps to climb to the top of the summit. If climbing does not interest you, there is an incline railway to catch instead.

Outside, right in front of the church, you will find exceptional views of Paris, its surrounding communities, and its famous monuments.

Stop 5: Visit Montmartre’s Famous Artists Square

Around the right side of the front of the church, take a short walk to Artists Square , or Place du Tertre.

This lovely square is tree-lined with local artists selling and practicing their trades. You will also be able to purchase hand-made souvenirs here.

Also, you will find a lot of street cafes and lovely restaurants.

Stop 6: Take A Peek At A Working Vineyard In Montmartre

Yes, there is a working vineyard in the heart of Paris. It is Vignes du Clos Montmartre , located not far from the artist’s square.

It is located on Rue des Saules on the way down the steep slope on the backside of the basilica.

Many tourists are not even aware of this vineyard, and it is a nice place to stop for a look-see during your London and Paris trip.

Stop 7: Look For Inexpensive Souvenirs At The Bottom Of Montmartre

At the bottom of the hill in front of Sacre Coeur, you will find the streets busy with people, both tourists and locals alike.

A great number of shops sell the cheapest souvenirs in all of Paris. When I travel to Paris, I usually get my souvenirs in this area.

There are numerous and reasonably priced restaurants and cafes in this area as well.

Stop 8: Make Time To Visit The Legendary Moulin Rouge

Also located at the bottom of the hill in Montmartre, you will find the world-famous cabaret, the Moulin Rouge .

Legendary performers such as Elton John and Frank Sinatra loved this venue. It has been in many movies throughout history as well.

There is Broadway-style entertainment, which demands a proper dress code. Purchasing tickets for this popular venue is always prudent. Dinner options are also available.

How To Get Around Paris

I suggest walking . Paris is a visually beautiful city. There’s much to see and absorb, which you could miss if you are not walking.

Leave ample time to arrive at your destination and wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.

The metro train system is extensive in Paris. It’s fast and cheap, arriving and departing frequently. You can purchase tickets at every station. The metro is easy to use even if it is your first time in Paris .

The metro is not an option for the wheelchair-bound or for those unable to walk long distances or climb up and down stairs frequently.

There are also city buses and trains to consider during your time in Paris. You always have the option to get a taxi or hire an Uber driver.

I do not recommend driving in Paris for visitors because of the traffic and difficulty finding parking. That is an option, however.

Renting a bicycle or e-scooter in Paris is an amazing way to explore the city. You have amazing mobility, yet the convenience of stopping whenever you like for a picture during your Paris trip.

Packing Tips For Your London Paris Itinerary

Using these useful packing tips will enhance your experiences while hopefully keeping you organized while you travel from London to Paris.

A  concealed travel pouch  may be one of the most important items you bring with you. This  unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind. You can keep your most valuable documents safe and secure next to your body.

If you have a pouch already you may not want to or need to invest in a new one, like me. If it does not come with RFID protection , these  RFID  sleeves  would be handy to prevent identity theft. This configuration comes with enough passport and credit card sleeves that the entire family would be protected.

They are slim too, so they will easily fit into your current pouch or wallet. These are the kind my family and I use not only when traveling but at home as well.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery . This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery is the exact one I carry with me  on all of my trips .

It can be used on a variety of phones, not just an iPhone like I have. And wow is it fast! I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about. And if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek Selfie Stick and Tripod  for my birthday. It has Bloothtooth connectivity so it is very easy to use. It is made of durable aluminum and is very lightweight and easy to carry. I love mine and I think you will enjoy it too!

I was never a fan of  packing cubes  until I tried them out! Now  I am sold .  These Bagail packing cubes   are  the exact ones I use whenever I travel . I cannot believe how much more organized I am now! And I never leave without them anymore.

Travel Locks  are an important consideration. I always travel with locks for my luggage. I lock my luggage in my hotel room or Air BnB if there is no room safe for me to use.

Don’t forget to bring along a  universal power adapter with you on your London-Paris itinerary. This worldwide power plug is a great example and will charge your phone at the end of your busy days. This  world traveler adapter kit   can charge several devices at the same time.

This is what you will need when there are several people traveling in your group, or if you bring several electronic devices on your trip that require charging at the same time.

Hydration is so important. You want to remain hydrated to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels.  You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble   filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for travel and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack or your purse.

Also when filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble. You can find   filter replacements here. 

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. This  foldable water-resistant backpack  would be great. It is very affordable and is available in many color options for you to choose from. The fact that it folds down into a zippered pouch will make it easy to pack.

We all need to  protect our eyes  from the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays. These  unisex polarized sunglasses   come in a lot of lens colors and frame designs and are extremely affordable too.

If you are fond of the  aviator-style of sunglasses these polarized aviators may interest you and add a bit of glamor during your London Paris itinerary.

Quick Tips For Your London And Paris Trip

Here are some  quick tips  and  tricks to keep in mind when planning a trip to London and Paris. These will make it less stressful and more enjoyable.

Stay vigilant! Pickpocketers are common in crowded areas of the city so be aware of your surroundings and belongings.

Call your credit card company  and verify if your credit card  does or does   not have foreign transaction fees.

When you visit an ATM in Paris , be sure it is in the  same network  as your bank so you are not charged transaction fees every time you withdraw cash.

Also, consider withdrawing larger amounts of cash more frequently, to limit the transaction fees.

Buy advanced tickets to must-do Paris attractions whenever possible. First off, usually, tickets purchased in advance online are less expensive.

Secondly, They usually come with skip-the-line options!

Do not worry about the language barrier when traveling to Paris. I understand a few basic French words and had NO difficulties when I visited.

The French people in Paris know a few English words and you will be able to communicate enough to make your wishes known.

You can even use a translator app on your phone to assist with your communications. My family and I use Google Translate. This is one of my top travel tips for Paris!

Perfect One Week London and Paris Itinerary

No two cities in the world inspire such wonder as London and Paris. Can you name two greater cities in the world? And the fact that they're a train ride away means easy access to some of the top sights in the whole world.

A one week London and Paris itinerary is one of the best you can have. You'll see Tower Bridge, the iconic red telephone booths, and incredible skyscrapers in London along with the glittering Eiffel Tower, the grand architecture of Hausmann, and the long boulevards of Paris. Really, you can't go wrong in either city, which is why this itinerary is so fantastic.

Because I know there is so much to do and see in each city, you can't possibly see it all in 7 days. So I've put the highlights, as well, as additional options and ideas to make your trip your own. This guide will help you plan your perfect trip to London and Paris.

This 7 day London, Paris itinerary will ensure you make the most out of your time. These are two of my favorite cities in Europe because they offer such beauty, have an in-depth history, and every time I go I learn something new.

You'll land in London, and hit the ground running to see the top sights. Then you'll take a train to Paris to get to know this wonderful city. I traveled with Globus on this excursion to immerse myself in everything these cities had to offer. Because Globus handles things like hotels, transportation, tickets to see a play, and more, I was able to get my fill of travel experiences. It's independent travel with ease.

Below you'll find a detailed guide to 7 days in London and Paris. You'll see we have a bit more time in London since it's a bigger city. I've mapped out (literally) each day so you can make sure you don't miss anything along the way!

You'll arrive in one of London's major airports like London Gatwick, London Heathrow or the smaller London Stansted or London Luton. These are about an hour form the city center, but I suggest you take a high speed train from the airport to your hotel. If you've booked with Globus , there will be transport provided for you (one of my FAVORITE perks of booking with them!).

You'll first want to get your bearings, but then I suggest you hit the town! I always recommend seeing a play in the West End . I've been to London dozens of times, and I never miss my chance on seeing a play.

For the evening, stroll around the busy and bustling Piccadilly Circus . This is similar to New York's Times Square (but cleaner) and is a flashy hub. From here, head to the lovely Covent Garden and grab a bite to eat , then head over to your play for the night.

I recommend getting theater tickets at TodayTix.com or in person at Leicester Square. You'll see plenty of signs for discounted tickets. You really can't go wrong, all the shows are incredible. I even dragged my husband to Mamma Mia and he LOVED it.

If you're up for it, your can head to Oxford Street for some fun pubs and clubs.

It's time to hit the ground running and see some of London's top spots! You'll start off at the Tower of London . It's not cheap, but I recommend that you take a guided tour, led by the tower guards who stay in character, of the Tower and make sure to leave time to see the crown jewels. This is London's most famous spot: it's where Ann Boleyn, among others, lost her head.

Next up, walk across Tower Bridge , the most beautiful bridge (and contrary to popular belief is not London Bridge). You can also go up the bridge if you want a more in depth history. In my Save or Splurge London post , I give you a full breakdown.

If you want the best view of the city head up to the Shard , London's tallest building. I actually recommend instead of paying just for an elevator ride to the top, going to the Shangri-La Hotel (inside the Shard) and having a drink near the top. The views are unmatched!

For a bite to eat and some famous filming locations check out Borough Market . Make sure to eat the sausage roll at Ginger Pig or grab some fish and chips at Fish! Kitchen.

From here, we're walking to Shakespeare's Globe theater , but make sure to check out the incredible architecture along the way like the “Walkie Talkie,” “Gherkin” and the odd looking “Lloyd's” building.

From here, walk across the Millennium Bridge (also a scene from Harry Potter!) to the masterpiece by Christopher Wren, St. Paul's Cathedral . You have to pay to go in, but if you go in the evening for “Even Song” a short mass, you can go for free. It's worth it to go inside for one of the largest domes in the world.

I always suggest going on a guided tour , especially in a place like London, with such rich history. You'll have to pick one area to concentrate on, so I suggest either the area with Westminister and Houses of Parliament, or near the Tower of London. I've done both and love each one!

Lastly, take a ride on the London Eye at night for some beautiful views. Located on the River Thames the third largest Ferris Wheel in the world circles slowly and offers 360-degree views.

Optional: British Museum, Head to Notting Hill, Somerset House, Harry Potter Tour (see my review of the Harry Potter experience here ).

Today you'll get to see the quintessential British treasures. Kicking off with Buckingham Palace . The seat of royalty and home of Queen Elizabeth II is best to see as early in the morning as possible. If you want to watch the changing of the guard you can see that at 11am, every day of the week.

Now you'll go to Parliament Square and Westminster Palace and see the iconic Big Ben (currently under constriction) and take a tour of Westminster Abbey , one of the most famous burial places in the world. The architecture of this building is some of my favorite.

From here, head to Trafalgar Square flanked by the massive stone lions. This busy square commemorated Admiral Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar.

Next, head to the National Gallery . The museum is free (many museums in the UK are) and offers paintings from the 13-19th century. Another one of my favorite museums is the Natural History Museum nearby and it's also an incredibly beautiful building.

If you're up for one more museum, check out the underground Churchill War rooms . Preserved from Churchill's actual war rooms this interactive museum walks you though where the British Prime Minister and staff waged war against the Nazis.

Stroll up the shopping streets of Regent and Oxford for some pretty window displays and great photo opportunities. This is also a great spot for tea .

Optional: Tate Modern, or Victoria and Albert Museum, Regent Park

It's your last day in London! Make your way over to Hyde Park to see the swans at Serpentine Lake, the German Christmas Market (if you're there during December) or just enjoy a picnic.

At the edge of the park is Kensington Palace and Gardens , the birthplace of Queen Victoria and a lovely place to walk or take a tour. After, if you need a drink, head to the pub the Churchill Arms for some world class decor, both inside and out.

Optional: Camden Market, Portobello Road Market, Greenwich

The fastest and easiest way to get from London to Paris is via train . There are flight options too (it takes about an hour), but by the time you go through security and wait to board, you might as well take the train.

The train is super fast, it only takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. There are about 16 trains a day that go from London to Paris so you'll definitely find one that's works for your schedule. Find the best times and prices here.

The way I have the schedule set is that you'll still have half a day in London so you can maximize your sightseeing.

Arrive in Paris Day: Guided Tour

Now that you're in Paris, I suggest you do a tour. Last time I was in Paris I did a Paris Ghost Tour and it was one of the coolest I've ever been on! I couldn't get over the detailed, interesting, and even crazy history from Paris' past.

Now, I know today seems like a lot, and that's only because it is. But many of these sights we'll be walking by, so don't worry too much! Paris is extremely walk-able, or you can easily hop on a nearby metro station.

First, take a short one hour river cruise , to get your bearings, see the many bridges by water and an easy way to take in the city.

Next, head over to the Île de la Cité area for my two favorite churches: Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle . Notre Dame is under construction because of a terrible fire. But it's worth it to go see the outside and see the iconic twin buttresses. Then, head to nearby Gothic Sainte-Chapelle for the most incredible stained glass.

Pass by the Pont Neuf bridge on your way to the Louvre. If you have time, I definitely recommend spending time inside the museum. It's gigantic, but contains some of the most important art relics in the world including the Mona Lisa. The outside of the Lourve is beautiful, with detailed architecture and glass pyramids in the middle.

Take a stroll through the pretty and neatly laid Tuileries Garden . Great for a quick photo opp.

Then pass by the Petit and Grand Palais .

Next, walk across my favorite bridge in the world, Pont Alexandre III. From here you can admire the Eiffel Tower from afar.

Now stroll the Seine over to the Eiffel Tower for a picnic and to watch it light up and glitter at night.

Optional: Luxembourg Garden, Pantheon, Visit the Catacombs, Trocadéro Garden, and St. Germain

Today will definitely involve some driving or public transportation, so keep that in mind. I highly recommend a half day trip to Versailles if you've never been. It's incredible and one of the most ornate places to visit in the world. You literally step back in King Louis 14th and Marie Antoinette's foot prints. The hall of mirrors alone is worth the trip.

You MUST get there early to avoid the crowds. I also suggest buying tickets ahead of time. If you've been and want a day trip I suggest Monet's Gardens . They are so beautiful, especially in the Spring.

After that, head back to Paris. We'll spend some time at the exquisite Galeries Lafayette . You don't have to go shopping to admire the glittering interior building. Pro tip: instead of waiting hours in line for the viewing platform, head to Starbucks and get just as good of a view! I also love this area for a good representation of Hausmann architecture.

Then you'll walk a short distance to Palais Garnier , the opera house in Paris. There are also plenty of shops here. From here, I suggest taking a cab or public transportation to Champs-Élysées . This is a grand boulevard lined with shops and one of my favorite hotels, the Peninsula . Stop in for tea or a drink with a view of the Eiffel Tower.

From here it's a straight shot to the Arc de Triopmhe , Napoleon's epic arch. Make sure to take a look at the soldier's eternal flame and the detailed carvings in stone around the arch.

Monmarte refers to an area of Paris and it contains one of the greatest relics of Paris, Sacré-Couer. This was also the “artists hub” of Paris so it looks a bit different from the Hausmann Architecture of Paris.

Start at the Moulin Rouge , and then head up, that's right, you'll be walking up quite a lot today. You can pass by the Instagram famous La Maison Rose while stopping for a pastry.

Then continue to Sacré-Couer . Save some time for this, as it's a great spot to watch street performers and get an incredible view of Paris.

If you have time, you can stop by Place du Tertre and pick up some art for a souvenir. Watch your stuff, Monmarte is known for pickpockets.

If flying out of Paris, you'll fly most likely out of Charles De Gaulle Aiport but there is also Beauvais-Tillé or Otly airport. You can take public transport directly here or, again with Monograms , you'll have a private stress-free transfer from your hotel directly to the airport.

Most of the time I recommend that you drive, but not for this trip. I recommend that you use public transportation since it's so easy to use and takes you wherever you need to go.

To me, there's never really a bad time to go. But if you want to avoid the crowds (Christmas and Summer are high season) then I suggest early Fall: September and October or early spring: April and May.

Where to Eat in London:

• Borough Market – great for fish and chips as well as a sausage roll at the Ginger Pig, I also love the fudge from Whirl
• Gymkhana for Indian (England's national dish is Chicken Tikka Masala after all).
• Sketch Cafe for Brunch
• One Aldwych for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea
• Sushi Tetsu – hard to get a reservation so book in advance.
• Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for pub food, also a place where Charles Dickens wrote.
• Crown & Anchor , Churchill Arms , Mr. Fogg's Gin Parlor for more pub food.
• Esters Cafe for breakfast.
• Savoy Hotel for something fancy.
• Head to Tesco for a meal deal and have a picnic in Hyde or Regent's Park.
• Circolo Popolare for an Instagram worthy spot. Or Peggy Porschen for the most instagrammy spot, serving cakes.

Where to Eat in Paris:

The best part about Paris cuisine? You can't go wrong.

• Cafe Julien , a cool Art Deco building with divine food
• Peninsula Paris for afternoon tea or a drink overlooking the Eiffel tower
• Refuge des Fondus for fondue and drinking wine out of a baby bottles!
• Ladurée  – I have to say.. I'm not a big fan of macarons but this is the place to go if you want some of the best.
• Cafe Kitsuné  – Arguably one of the most instagrammable cafes in Paris. The coffee is tasty and pretty.
• Comptoir de La Gastronomie  – one of the best meals I've ever had. The Foie Gras Ravioli was out of this world.
• La Stube  – This is the perfect lunch spot for a savory tart or Salmon Strudel. Also try their cakes, divine!
• La Drouguerie for crepes
• Le Train Bleu , near the colorful streets of Rue Crémieux is in the train station and ornate place to stop to eat.
• Cafe de la Poste is a good spot for lunch.
• Angelina's for hot chocolate – get it to go so you don't have to wait in line.
• For pastries there's almost too many places to name! But try Du Pain et des Idées , it's divine!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter the United Kingdom and France. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter the United Kingdom or France for short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of the United Kingdom and of France to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Deposits & Final Payment

Deposits and fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $600 per person

Final Payments:

Final Payment is due to Tauck  60  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
• Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $449  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly. 

VACCINATIONS  

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccinations may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

This journey is paced to accommodate all our guests. It is, nonetheless, an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical limitations. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The weather in London and Paris is variable. Generally, daytime temperatures in the spring and fall range from 50 to 65 °F (10 to 18 °C) and in summer, 65 to 75 °F (18 to 24 °C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year and averages 1.5 to 2.5 in (38. to 64 mm) per month. Europe has experienced unusually warm temperatures during the summer months in recent years, so do include some lighter clothing in your travel wardrobe.

What To Pack

The weather in London and Paris is changeable and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. Rain falls evenly throughout the year in both cities; however, the relative humidity in Paris is 10% higher than in London. In summer, the heat and humidity in Paris causes some moderate discomfort.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire but a sports jacket is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. Shorts are not permitted for the luncheon / tea at Fortnum & Mason on day 4. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer and bathrobes located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Paris Tour from London - 3 Days

Our 3 day Paris tour from London is available every Saturday, departing from London St Pancras International Train Station. This is a great way of getting to and discovering Paris from the UK Capital and includes 2 nights accommodation in a 4-star hotel in the centre of Paris, as well a guided coach tour, river cruise, lunch at the Eiffel Tower and tickets to the Lido de Paris. Our tour package offers great value for money and is often a cheaper way of visiting Paris than booking independently.

Depart London St Pancras International train station at 07:00, arriving in Paris just over 2 hours later at 09:15. You’ll be met at Paris Gare du Nord train station by a staff member who will escort you to your hotel. From here, you’ll begin a day tour of Paris, beginning with a panoramic coach tour of the city. This is followed by a scenic cruise along the River Seine, where you’ll get to see the highlights of Paris including the Musee d’Orsay, Place de la Concorde and Notre Dame Cathedral. Next stop is the Eiffel Tower, and the Paris tour package includes fast track entrance to the site and lunch on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower!

Enjoy lunch at Madame Brasserie two Michelin stars chef Thierry Marx, with local and seasonal products creating contemporary brasserie cuisine. Located on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, it offers amazing views of the Trocadéro and the Palais de Chaillot.

Day 2 & 3 of our Paris tour from London are unescorted. You’ll be able to explore Paris on your own. Highlights of the city include the Louvre Museum, Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, Jardin du Luxembourg as well as the fabulous cafes, bars and restaurants that Paris is famous for. Paris is a walking city, and enjoy a stroll along the Champs-Elysees and the fabulous gardens that dot the city.

Our package also includes tickets to the Lido de Paris , the famous Paris cabaret dinner show. Every evening, talented artists perform on stage including breathtaking acrobats, amazing ice skaters, and the most glamorous, elegant dancers in Paris, the Bluebell Girls! This tribute to the City of Light will leave you with stars in your eyes.

Day 1 : Fly to England

Board an overnight flight to London to begin this journey of a lifetime.

Day 2 : Tower of London

Upon arrival in Europe, we meet our resident Blue Badge Guide whose passion for British history and traditions enhance our experience. Departing the airport, our first stop is the Tower of London. Founded by William the Conqueror in 1066, this enduring fortress houses both Britain’s Crown Jewels and a medieval collection of armory and weaponry. Its ancient stone walls hold some of the city’s darkest secrets, and we are privy to a few of them during our narrated tour. We then check in to our incredible accommodations for the next three evenings and get to know our fellow travelers over a delicious three-course Welcome Dinner.

Day 3 : Thames River Cruise & Afternoon Tea

After an included full English breakfast, we visit the Churchill War Rooms, part of the underground nerve center of Britain’s war effort. Explore the secret corridors, discover life during World War II, and learn about Churchill’s leadership and legacy. Next, we relax on a delightful cruise with views of Tower Bridge as we travel down the Thames River to Westminster Pier. Later, we partake in a favorite pastime of locals, Afternoon Tea. It is truly the perfect end to our day’s scheduled activities as we dine on a delicious array of bite-size savories, sip expertly steeped tea, and enjoy the comfort of easy conversation with our new acquaintances.

Day 4 : Imperial War Museum & Windsor Castle

Our sightseeing this morning begins with a visit to the Imperial War Museum, which houses authentic examples of World War II weaponry and an exhibit of World War I trench warfare. We then tour Windsor Castle, private home of British royalty as well as the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Marvel at the magnificent architecture and opulent interior, including the Grand Reception Room that’s adorned with real gold and sparkling chandeliers. Afterwards, the rest of the day is yours for individual exploration.

Day 5 : Portsmouth & Ferry to France

We say farewell to London and travel to England’s south coast. Upon arrival in Portsmouth we visit the award-winning D-Day Museum before boarding a ferry to cross the English Channel to France.

Day 6 : D-Day Sites

We are joined by a special World War II guide to learn about famous battle events. Spend a poignant morning at Omaha Beach, one of the five beaches making up the landing for the D-Day invasion by Allied troops. We study the battlefield, cross the beach, analyze maps, and pay tribute to the courage that guarded our freedom. The American Cemetery stretches along the bluff where we may offer our respects among the hundreds of Crosses and Stars of David for the deceased. Our next visit is Arromanches, the renowned site of Mulberry Harbor. This artificial port and dock carried thousands of Allied troops and cargo across the Channel during wartime. Portions of it remain today.

Day 7 : Normandy Sites

Joined by our World War II guide, we spend the morning at the Pointe-du-Hoc Ranger Monument located on a sheer cliff overlooking Omaha Beach. Americans seized the German artillery equipment here, preventing fire on American troops landing on the beach. This afternoon we visit St. Mére Église, seized by American paratroopers on D-Day. Hear the riveting story of American Private John Steele and visit the Airborne Museum. Next, we visit Utah Beach, the westernmost beach during the Allied Landings. Later, we view the Bayeux Tapestry which tells the tale of William the Conqueror’s invasion of England.

Day 8 : Monet’s Garden

Today we begin our journey to Paris. En route we visit the charming village of Giverny and stroll the gardens and visit the home of famous Impressionist artist Claude Monet.

Day 9 : Paris City Tour

We discover the enchanting sights of romantic Paris, the City of Light. On a guided tour we see the Champs Elysees Avenue, Notre Dame Cathedral, Eiffel Tower, and Arc de Triomphe. The afternoon is ours to enjoy at leisure. Relax at a sidewalk cafe, do some shopping, or visit city sights. After dinner, a spectacular Seine River cruise creates a magical evening. Illuminated buildings, bridges, churches, and the Eiffel Tower create a dramatic backdrop in the night sky.

Day 10 : Iconic Louvre Museum

This morning, enjoy a guided tour of the world-renowned Louvre Museum and discover its many masterpieces. The afternoon is free for individual pursuits. Visit the Musee d’Orsay or stroll through The Tuileries Garden. We gather this evening for a special Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner in Paris, the perfect ending to our extraordinary vacation.

How to Travel From London to Paris by Train, Bus, Plane, and Car

The withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU), a move known as "Brexit," formally occurred on January 31, 2020. Following that departure is a transition period lasting until December 31, 2020, during which the UK and EU will negotiate the terms of their future relationship. This article has been updated as of the January 31 withdrawal, and you can find up-to-date information about details of the transition on the UK's government website .

With only around 300 miles (483 kilometers) and the English Channel separating the capitals of England and France, it has never been easier, or quicker, to travel from London to Paris. This is great news for anyone hoping to spend time in both cities during a longer trip to Europe—or even a shorter one.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From London to Paris?

BlaBlaBus is the bus company that offers the cheapest tickets to get from London to Paris with fares starting at just $18. Other bus companies that typically offer low fares include Eurolines and FlixBus . The bus ride is pretty long and takes at least eight hours, 45 minutes, but the good news is that buses from London to Paris are usually direct and don't make too many stops along the way. They also run frequently and there are multiple departures daily across all the bus lines.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From London to Paris?

Some may argue that it is actually faster to take the high-speed train to Paris once you factor in the time it takes you to get to the airport and through security, but technically, flying is still the quickest mode of transportation. A direct flight takes just one hour, 15 minutes and because London and Paris are two of Europe's largest and most important cities, many airlines operate multiple direct flights throughout the day.

International carriers including British Airways and Air France offer daily flights to Paris, as do regional and budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet . Easily connecting London and the French capital, these flights land at either Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) or  Orly Airport (ORY) . Flights to Beauvais Airport located in the far outskirts of Paris tend to come with less expensive fares, but you'll need to plan on at least one extra hour to get into central Paris and in this case, taking the train would definitely be faster.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

Despite the body of water that separates the British Isles from Continental Europe, it is possible to drive from London to Paris and it will take you at least five hours, 30 minutes. Thanks to the world's longest undersea tunnel, the Channel Tunnel (also known as " the Chunnel "), you can actually drive underneath the English Channel to cross into France. If you drive, it will take you about 35 minutes to get through the 31 mile- (50 kilometer-) long Chunnel, but you won't actually be driving . Your car will be loaded onto a carriage train and you can ride out the journey with your car parked. The train even has restroom facilities, so this is a great opportunity to squeeze in a bathroom break. Be aware that crossing the Chunnel in a car will cost about $55 each way. Alternatively, you could also take your car across on the ferry that travels between Dover, England and Calais, France , and will cost at least $60 each way.

Unless you need to get your car from the UK to Continental Europe, driving is the least efficient way to travel between London and Europe in terms of travel time and cost. However, the Chunnel is certainly a modern marvel of engineering and an experience worth having in itself.

How Long Is the Train Ride?

You can get to Paris from London in about two hours, 30 minutes via the high-speed Eurostar train, which also traverses the English channel via the Chunnel. With tickets starting at $62, the London to Paris route on the Eurostar leaves from the St. Pancras International Station and arrives at Paris Gare du Nord Station . Some trains will make stops in the towns of Ashford, Calais, and Lille among others, but most are direct.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Paris?

As the saying goes, "Paris is always a good idea," but there are better times than others to visit Paris. To avoid the city at the height of its summer heat or during its cold and sometimes snowy winters, you should plan to visit Paris during the Spring or Fall . This is also the time of year when the crowds of tourists are at their thinnest. Although, Christmastime is also a good time to see the City of Lights even more lit up in festive lights than at other times of year.

If you're hoping to catch Paris in an exciting moment, you may consider traveling there for Fashion Week , which happens twice a year in February and September, or the Tour de France in July, the cross-country bike race that always finishes in Paris. July is also a great time to be in France to experience the festive patriotism of Bastille Day on July 14, which is basically the French equivalent of the American Fourth of July.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Paris?

Americans do not need a visa to enter the UK, France, or any country part of the EU, but you will still need a valid passport to take travel between the two countries. If you're a citizen of one of the EU member states, you may still use a valid I.D. card from your home country in lieu of a passport, but it's strongly recommended that you bring a passport. With Brexit negotiations currently underway, there have been scattered reports of tougher border security checks from UK officers.

What Time Is It in Paris?

At any time of year, Paris is always one hour ahead of London. As soon as you cross over from the UK into France, you will be leaving the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is at UTC +0 and entering the Central European Time (CET), which is at UTC +1. During daylight savings time, the UK changes its clocks at the same time as France, so you don't have to be concerned about that.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

From both Charles de Gaulle and Orly Airports, you can take the commuter train (RER) into Paris, which will arrive in about 30 to 45 minutes. There is also an express bus from each airport that may be slightly cheaper than the train.

Those looking to explore the city’s rich heritage can spend long afternoons getting lost in the Louvre or wandering the Musée d'Orsay, or ducking in and out of Paris’s countless historical churches (many of which were reinvented as Republican temples after the Revolution). For more contemporary tastes, there’s plenty of exploring to be done in the less tourist-trodden outer arrondissements – from arts venues on the sloping streets of Belleville to the boutique hotels and reinvented dive bars of Pigalle.

Essential information: what to know before you go

Start the day at the Luxembourg Garden and take in the lines of plane trees and ornate parterres, with the top of the Eiffel Tower visible in the distance. Come out on the north side of the park, being sure to clock the stunning Medici Fountain on your right.

Go next to Rue de Seine, via Place de l'Odéon, stopping to browse in the second-hand bookshops and independent galleries that punctuate this historically bohemian district.

Follow Rue de Seine down to the river, emerging in front of the French Institute building, taking in the view across Pont des Arts to the Louvre across the river. Book ahead to visit Sainte Chapelle , the resplendent 12th-century chapel built by Louis IX (you’ll feel like you’re inside a giant jewellery box).

Afterwards, stop for a coffee in the ornate environs of 1920s café  Les Deux Palais . Cross Île de la Cité arriving in front of Notre-Dame; steal a moment of calm in the gardens that run along the right of the church, before crossing on to the Left Bank to visit Shakespeare & Company , the notable English-language bookshop frequented by the Beat poets and still a hub for literary types.

Wander up Quai de Montebello, cross back onto the charming Ile Saint-Louis and stop for a proper hot chocolate at Café Saint-Régis .

Head back on to the Left Bank and wander the  Jardin des Plantes  botanical gardens; if you’re travelling en famille, consider a visit to the zoo. 

Prop yourself up at the bar of L’Avant Comptoir . Ask for wine recommendations and have fun choosing from the menu of French small plates – go for the mackerel with grapefruit and horseradish and the pork trotter terrine. Finish with a classic film in the romantic surrounds of the Filmothèque  in the Latin Quarter. If you still want to go on, end the night with live jazz in the atmospheric cellars at Caveau de la Huchette .

Let’s head to the Marais. Start at the ornate 17th-century square, Place des Vosges . Warm up with a café crème at the elegant Café Hugo on the north-east corner, or visit the house of its novelist's namesake on the south-east corner, Maison de Victor Hugo.

Exit to Rue Saint-Antoine via the south-west edge of the square through the secluded courtyards of 17th-century mansion Hôtel de Sully . Head into the heart of the Marais along Rue Vieille du Temple.

For lunch, try a tasty salad served with brio at Le Pick-Clops  or if you’re in a street-food mood, opt for falafel in the historical heart of Paris’s Ashkenazi Jewish community; L'As du Fallafel  is the most famous and undeniably delicious, but be prepared for long queues. Head west towards the Centre Pompidou  from Rue des Rosiers via Rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie, a hub for gay bars and businesses. Stop, on the way, for ice cream at award-winning Une Glace à Paris , known for its inventive flavour combinations, such as blackberry and jasmine.

Be sure to book ahead for an exhibition at the Pompidou. Make a pitstop at the top of the remarkable post-modern building for an (admittedly, eye-wateringly expensive) drink at Le Georges restaurant and take in the wraparound views.  

Next, head west towards Les Halles. Turn right up Rue Montorgueil and soak in the sights and smells of this traditional market street – be sure to stop by the picture-perfect Anaïs florist and drool over beautiful pastry at historical Patisserie Stohrer .

For chic shopping, explore nearby Rue Tiquetonne and Rue Bachaumont for vintage finds and local designers. Rest your weary feet with a drink in the Instagram-ready courtyard restaurant at Hoxton Paris .

Round off your Paris break with a touch of schmaltz (because, pourquoi pas allow yourself a little?) and take a cruise along the Seine in one of the iconic Bateaux Mouches (Port de la Conférence), taking in the floodlit Musée d'Orsay, Louvre and Notre-Dame and the reflected yellow glow on the river. It may feel a little touristy, but gliding along the water on one is never disappointing.

Neighbourhood watch

The neighbourhood of Pigalle, home of the Moulin Rouge, has historically been characterised by its bright lights and sex shops (which are still there). But in more recent years the area has also become a burgeoning spot for hipster nightlife with the opening of boutique hotels such as Hôtel Amour , Grand Pigalle and Le Pigalle , and relaxed-cool bars.

Attractions

There are rarely long queues to climb the stairs to the second level of the Eiffel Tower – and it's a great way to discover the monument.

Climbing Paris’s monuments is a wonderful way to get a view over the city, but the city’s natural high points can also offer spectacular vistas – from the hill of Montmartre to the slopes of the Buttes Chaumont park in the north of the city.

Head east to the slopes of Belleville. Try the jazz brunch (all-you-can-eat indulgence and live music: a winner) at  La Bellevilloise  and climb to the top of Parc de Belleville for Eiffel Tower views. 

You don’t need to be staying at Paris’s most expensive five-star addresses to get a feel for them: try a drink at Bar Hemingway at  The Ritz Paris  or a tipple with a view at Le Rooftop at  The Peninsula Paris .

In recent years, Paris’s town hall has added hundreds of miles of cycle routes to the city. Some large thoroughfares, such as Rue de Rivoli, have been transformed into cycle superhighways. Pedal like a Parisian by hiring a Vélib city bike, or opt for pay-per-use electric bike rentals.

You can come to Paris any time but the atmosphere is quite different at different times of year. Winter is a time for festivals and feasting on game and oysters. Spring and early summer are the time to make the most of city parks and café terraces, punctuated by the Fête de la Musique on June 21 and the military parade and fireworks of July 14. In August the capital slows down and a beach takes over the quays, some people love it for the feeling of calm, but many restaurants are closed and you may be hard-pushed to find a Parisian around. The autumn rentrée starts with a burst of energy for the new cultural season, big exhibition openings and new restaurant arrivals.

Hôtel Des Grands Voyageurs is located in the heart of the Left Bank, where the chic style of Saint-Germain meets New York meets Rome at this Italian-designed slinky address, just outside the tourist throng but well placed for exploring. The restaurant, styled as a 'transatlantic brasserie', serves seriously good food while the two bars are chic spots for late-night cocktails.

Budget beauty

The pretty little Hotel Henriette makes a cosy and romantic base for a city break in Paris, with some of the bohemian Left Bank's most charming attractions a short walk away. It is an Instagrammer's dream. Designer Vanessa Scoffier has a background in fashion journalism and her good taste and keen eye for detail can be seen throughout the hotel.

Local laws and etiquette

• When greeting people, formal titles (Monsieur, Madame and Mademoiselle) are used much more in French than in English.
• It is considered polite to say ‘bonjour’ when you enter a space such as a restaurant, a shop or even a waiting room, and you should say ‘bonjour’ first when asking for assistance, rather than starting with an ‘excusez-moi’.  It’s an essential piece of social punctuation, like saying your pleases and thank yous.
• The laws of vouvoiement (which version of “you” to use) take years to master. If in doubt – except when talking to children or animals – always use the formal vous form (second person plural) rather than the more casual tu.
• When driving, it’s compulsory to keep fluorescent bibs and a hazard triangle in the car in case of breakdown.

Londoners Warned to Brace for Thunderstorms and Lightning by Weatherman

Thunderstorm warnings have been issued by the Met Office, covering the southern part of England. The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for thunderstorms that could lead to possible travel disruption and some flooding.

According to the BBC , the warning includes London, the East and South East of England, from Oxford to Brighton and Canterbury, and parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Essex. The warning will be in place from 23:00 on Wednesday to 06:00 on Thursday.

The Met Office has warned that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions, some road closures, and public transport delays. In addition, there is a small chance of power cuts and other services could be lost.

The Met Office has also stated that lightning strikes could lead to public transport delays and a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning, hail, or strong winds.

The thunderstorms have already caused disruption, with many people reporting being woken up by loud claps of thunder overnight, as storms raged over London. Several users took to social media platforms to express their experiences. “That thunder woke half of London up,” one user posted. Another posted: “Woken up in a hotel room in Canary Wharf by thunder and lightning, all feeling a bit dystopian #thunderstorms.”

The Met Office has advised people to keep up to date with the latest weather warnings and to take precautions to stay safe during the thunderstorms.

Nick Schroeder, 42, of Portland, is communications manager and multidisciplinary programmer for Space, a nonprofit arts venue in Portland. He’s also an actor, director and ensemble member with Mad Horse Theatre Company in South Portland. A native of Old Orchard Beach, he’s worked as a journalist and editor at several local publications.

As much as I like bopping around the state by myself, I’ll spend my perfect Maine day with my partner, Mallory, and our nearly 3-year-old toddler. The kid’s in the stage of life where she asks why to just about everything, and that question makes for good conversation.

Getting dressed (finding pants, socks, etc. and negotiating their deployment) can take a while in my house, so we’ll put on WMPG to keep the energy loose. I’ll pour a good cup of coffee, Speckled Ax Early Riser preferred , in my clunky travel mug. Then we’ll get things cracking at that one real good climbing tree in the park for a little proprioceptive rinse. The branches are real low to the ground and I don’t have to worry about my kid taking any nasty falls.

Will Zu Bakery still have croissants by now, or is that too much morning meandering? The neighbors tend to swarm the little West End spot – how is it this good? – and it can quickly sell out. If that’s the case, we’ll drive south. Actually, scratch that – Mallory will drive this leg, and I’ll bike. Our destinations will be the same, Palace Diner (in Biddeford). I’ll have the omelet du jour and those great big potatoes, and maybe a bite of my kid’s pancake – the dad handbook clearly states that you must eat your children’s leftovers. We’ll all poke our heads inside Biddeford Vintage Market and see what new vendors they’ve got (my aunt Barb runs the place with some friends) before making a quick spin into Color.Sound.Oblivion to check their newly stocked records.

With family who live nearby, I’ll be able to ditch the bike and hop into the car, heading north. We’ll stop in Portland to grab a couple of arepas for the road from the outrageously good Colombian food restaurant Maïz, and head to South Paris. In this fantasy, the Celebration Barn has a perfectly timed matinee show, and true to form, it’s equally enchanting for kids and adults.

After that, we’ll drive to Rockland (here’s where the kid naps) and head to a beach (any beach) before I pop into Curator , one of few consignment shops that bothers to stock nice stuff for tall fellas. Then it’s over to Rock City Cafe for a refill and a poke around Hello Hello Books behind the cafe. Last time, I found a nice used paperback of a Judy Chicago biography. Will I get this lucky again?

Returning to Portland, we’ll have had our fill of driving and Raffi sing-alongs. It’s time for our A-list East End retail trifecta – Ferdinand  for handmade wonders, Starry Eyes  for snazzy kids’ stuff, and Print: A Bookstore (more books!).

For dinner, the ideal is Asmara , the great Eritrean gem, where we as a family can share big communal plates of colorful food using only our hands as utensils. After we put the kid to bed, I’ll text a friend, and if his kid’s asleep, too, we can sneak out for a little nightcap at the Continental and discuss the news.

Now to Georgia, which is not directly involved in the war in Ukraine, but whose future is seen as highly significant in the context of Vladimir Putin's ambitions for Russia.

Draft legislation, known as the "foreign agents" law, is winding its way through the Georgian parliament and would require organisations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence.

The proposed law has been attacked by opponents as authoritarian and Kremlin-inspired.

Protesters have taken to the streets of capital Tbilisi for weeks to show their opposition, while the European Union and the United States have urged Georgiato drop the legislation or risk harming its chances of EU membership and a broader Euro-Atlantic future.

The stand-off is seen as part of a wider struggle that could determine whether Georgia, a country of 3.7 million people that has experienced war and revolution since the fall of the Soviet Union, moves closer to Europe or back under Moscow's influence.

A regular feature of news coverage surrounding the war in Ukraine has been the frequently bellicose statements that have emanated from one of Vladimir Putin's most prominent allies, Dmitry Medvedev.

The deputy chairman of the security council of the Russian Federation is notorious for his inflammatory language and repeated invocation of Cold War-style nuclear threats, which tend to be widely dismissed by most Western commentators.

Indeed, some analysts have suggested the former president's penchant for such wild outbursts are specifically designed to frame himself as an erratic character who could not be considered a viable rival to Mr Putin - thus avoiding the fate of other figures considered a threat to the leader's authority.

It is through that lens that many will view his latest comments, which ostensibly cover his thoughts on the Ukraine peace conference due to take place in Switzerland in June - to which Russia has not been invited.

His assessment is perhaps unsurprisingly dismissive, even going as far as to imply the summit represents positive news for Moscow.

"What is Russia's gain of the Swiss 'peace conference'?" he asks in his post on social media.

 "It's actually threefold. First, it will come as yet another proof of failure of the so-called peace plan by the halfwit zelensky (sic)."

He follows that by referring to Ukraine's leader as "the bandera b******", seeking to associate him with a Ukrainian far-right leader of the mid 20th century.

The Kremlin has long sought to depict Ukraine's leadership as far-right neonazis, efforts that have been widely dismissed by commentators on the region.

"Second, it will be visible evidence of the full impotence of the present-day western elites, who have performed painful self-castration of their own potential to stop the military conflict," Mr Medvedev continues.

"What's more, it has been done on direct orders given by a group of senile doctors from Washington.

"Third, it will allow our Armed Forces to further cleanse Malorossia's [little Russia's] territories from neonazis without any hindrance and regard for some c***'s 'peace initiatives'."

After forecasting "the final collapse of the former Ukraine’s political regime", he concludes: "Thank you, the land of cheese and watches!"

Russian officers has been welcoming foreign military attaches in Moscow today during their visit to an exhibition of Western military equipment captured from Kyiv forces during the fighting in Ukraine.

The event organised by the Russian Defence Ministry features more than 30 pieces of Western-made heavy equipment, including a US-made M1 Abrams tank and a Bradley armoured fighting vehicle.

More now from Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who has been speaking to journalists this afternoon.

She has said any move by Denmark to restrict the freedom of navigation of Russian ships in the Baltic straits will be seen as a hostile act and draw retaliation.

It is unclear exactly what prompted the threat, but we'll bring you any more detail as we get it.

Denmark has played down suggestions it will begin checking Russian tankers moving through its waters to establish whether they have the correct documentation.

The country allows ships calling at Russia to use its waters due to a longstanding freedom of navigation treaty, although the country's armed forces have said it is standard procedure to track them.

The Baltic straits - the only natural exits from the Baltic sea to the North Atlantic - are notoriously difficult to navigate and international maritime authorities strongly recommend the use of pilots with specialist local knowledge.

However, it is believed more than 20 tankers - so-called shadow vessels - transporting Russian oil but with unknown ownership, have declined offers to use Danish pilots since the start of 2024. 

And the Danish Maritime Authority said in a statement in March that a tanker from Russia's shadow fleet was involved in a collision near Denmark.

The incident involving the 15-year-old Andromeda Star oil tanker took place on 2 March.

A Russian activist has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to set fire to a military conscription office in protest against the war in Ukraine. 

Angel Nikolayev, 39, was convicted on charges of terrorism for placing two bottles of a flammable substance in the windows of a conscription office in the eastern city of Khabarovsk and setting them alight. 

He was also convicted of damaging Russian flags that were put on the graves of soldiers killed in Ukraine at a local cemetery and removing symbols of Russian military action from a bus stop and several vehicles.

Since 2022, hundreds of people have faced criminal charges in Russia over protests and remarks condemning the war in Ukraine, and thousands have been fined or briefly jailed.

Russia is ready to consider "serious" peace talk proposals to settle the conflict in Ukraine, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

Speaking at a press briefing this afternoon, Ms Zakharova said the talks must be based on existing "realities" and Moscow's security concerns. 

She said part of the proposal would include Ukraine pledging to remain militarily neutral in future.

Russia proposing the possibility of peace talks is nothing new. 

Despite suggesting it is open for discussion, it always seems to blame Ukraine or the West for the breakdown of negotiations.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said troops have taken control of 211 square miles (547 square kilometres) of Ukrainian territory this year.

He referred to the territory as Russia's "new regions".

Mr Shoigu told a group of senior military commanders that Ukrainian forces were retreating along the frontline and that Russian troops were breaking a network of "Ukrainian strongholds".

"Over the past two weeks, the Russian armed forces have liberated the settlements of Novobakhmutivka, Semenivka and Berdychi in the Donetsk People's Republic," he said.

"The Ukrainian army units are trying to cling on to individual lines, but under our onslaught they are forced to abandon their positions and retreat."

Ukraine's top commander said last week that a number of troops had fallen back to new positions in villages on the eastern front.

The advances mean Russia now controls around 18% of Ukraine.

As reported here earlier, Moscow has had a predictably indignant reaction to Lord Cameron's statement's yesterday during his trip to Ukraine (see 10.34am post).

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has offered a further reflection of displeasure within Vladimir Putin's regime, claiming the British foreign secretary's comments amounted to an acknowledgement that the West was waging a war against Russia using "Ukrainian hands".

Lord Cameron said yesterday that Ukraine had a right to use weapons provided by London to strike targets inside Russia, and that it was up to Kyiv whether to do so.

"Cameron's words are further evidence of the hybrid war the West is waging against our country," Ms Zakharova said.

"Russia is responding to that and will continue to respond."

Russian's Vladimir Putin is planning to visit China later this month to meet President Xi Jinping, according to a report by Bloomberg News.

The visit is scheduled for 15-16 May, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the Kremlin's plans.

It comes after the White House said it remained "deeply concerned" that it was not seeing China make any changes amid accusations it is helping Russia's military with its war in Ukraine. 

Next week, Mr Xi will visit Europe for the first time in five years.

Beginning in Paris, France, he will visit Hungary and Serbia, the latter of which is a close ally to Mr Putin.

China has always maintained that it remains an objective and just party over the war, adding that its trade relations are "above-board".
