Manipur ( Manipuri : ꯀꯪꯂꯩꯄꯥꯛ, Kangleipak) is a North-Eastern Indian state, rich in history, culture and natural beauty.  Ancient Manipur  was one of Asia's oldest human civilisations. It was known for the arts, language, philosophy, politics and sports. Besides its cultural heritage, the blue mountains and the bowl like central plain draw many tourists from far away. Loktak lake , home to the world's only floating national park, is known as the "Mirror of Manipur".

Manipur is also known as "Switzerland of the East", "Jewel of India" and "Maid of the Mountains". Besides these, it is also called "Gateway to South East Asia" for its strategic location in India connecting with the South East Asian countries. Other than Manipur, there is no well developed land route in India to connect with the ASEAN nations.

Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years, connecting the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia to Southeast Asia, East Asia, Siberia, regions in the Arctic, Micronesia and Polynesia. This strategic geographical location enables the migration of people, cultures and religions, to and from all sides.

Regions [ edit ]

Manipur has mountainous and plain regions with countless islands spread over the Loktak lake in the middle of the central bowl like plain.

Map

Manipur is broadly divided into plain districts (Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Jiribam, Kakching, Thoubal) and hill districts (Chandel, Churachandpur, Kamjong, Sadar Hills/Kangpokpi, Noney, Pherzawl, Senapati, Tamenglong, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul).

tourist map of manipur

Manipur is bordered by Assam in the west, Nagaland in the north, Myanmar (Burma) in the east, and Mizoram in the south.

The state is a melting pot of different cultures and languages. In Manipur, people are legally classified as non-tribal groups and tribal groups. All the non-Meiteis are considered tribals, giving governmental privileges in every sectors. The Meitei people (popularly called Manipuri speaking people) comprise the vast majority of the population, although there is a sizeable population of the Nagas (the largest minority group) and other various tribal groups. Tribesmen communities are native to the hill districts while the Meiteis are mainly predominant in the central plain and other valleys, including Jiribam and Moreh . Hinduism and Christianity are the dominant religions in the state. Sanamahism is the only ancient religion indigenous to Manipur. After a long suppression of three consecutive centuries, it is reviving and is the fastest growing religion in Manipur.

Manipur has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia , enabling the migration of various cultures and languages to and from the two regions, and the state is credited for introducing the sport of polo to Europeans.

As with several states in North-Eastern India , Manipur has faced a violent, often brutal, insurgency. The parallel rise of the Naga insurgency in the hill districts and the fact that there are elements of ethnic and tribal nationalism in the insurgent movement have made the situation very complex.

Although the worst of the violence may have come to an end with many rebel groups having since surrendered peacefully to the Indian government, some issues caused by the insurgency still persist.

Talk [ edit ]

Meitei (popularly called Manipuri ) is the official state language and is the native language of the vast majority of the population, although an English speaking visitor will not encounter significant language problems. English is the second most widely studied and understood language next to Meitei, followed by the local tribal languages. At least some basic knowledge of English can be expected from almost most of the population in the tourism industry and public transport services. However, learning a few Meitei terms, like "hello", "how are you" and "thank you" will be warmly welcomed.

Some people in Manipur can communicate in Hindi similar to its neighbouring states, but nearly everyone in Manipur is better in communicating in English over Hindi and locals too prefer communicating in English over Hindi.

Get in [ edit ]

If you are an Indian citizen but don't reside in Manipur, you need to apply for an "inner line permit" (ILP) upon arrival in Manipur. Foreign travellers also need to register with the police when they enter, but do not officially require any kind of permit. If entering by land along the main road from Nagaland, there's an obvious ILP counter next to the border gate at Mao. The place for foreigners to register is also well-marked, but is located just a bit farther down the road at the big police station in Mao village.

By plane [ edit ]

Manipur can be entered by roadways from any of its land neighbours. From Myanmar, Assam and Nagaland, there are international highways, national highways and inter-state highways to Manipur. From Myanmar , Manipur can be entered through Moreh , the Indo-Myanmar border commercial hub. From the eastern side (Myanmar), the most popular route to Manipur is the Indo-Myanmar Highways (Imphal-Moreh Highway). From the western side via Assam, the most popular route to Manipur is the Imphal-Jiribam Highway. From the northern side via Nagaland, the most popular route to Manipur is the Imphal-Dimapur highway, which crosses the state border at a place called Mao Gate.

By bus [ edit ]

There are daily bus departures from Kohima to Imphal, leaving only at 7:30AM. The bus sometimes fills up, and no advance bookings are accepted, so you should arrive half and hour to an hour early to get your ticket.

By sumo [ edit ]

Another way to get from Kohima to Imphal is to take a sumo from P.R. Hill neighborhood in Kohima to Khuzama village, near the Manipur border, then another sumo from Khuzama taxi stand to Mao Gate at the border, then another from the taxi stand inside Mao village (just past the police station, left at the fork in the road). This, of course, is both slower and more expensive than taking a bus, but is a workable backup plan if you aren't able to get the bus.

By train [ edit ]

Indian Railways connect Manipur with the rest of country's regions through Jiribam . As of 2022, the world's tallest railway bridge is under construction in Noney district of Manipur.

Eat [ edit ]

tourist map of manipur

Manipuri cuisine is a blend of indigenous traditions and outside influences. Mainland India have left significant impacts on modern Manipuri cuisine. The traditional Meitei diet is very oriental, espousing fish, grains, herbs and vegetables native to the Asian biome. Rice is a staple food. Being highly dependent on the Loktak Lake , the Meiteis incorporate plenty of aquatic food into their diet, especially fish. Manipur is also a remarkable producer and consumer of fish, pork and chicken. Wines are legally allowed for tribes but not for the Meiteis (excluding Chakpa castes) since they are legally not tribes.

  • Chamthong or Kangshoi is a stew preparation of any seasonal vegetables with coarsely chopped onions, maroi, ginger and salt, topped with ngari, fried fish pieces (optional) and water. It's soupy in nature and is eaten with rice.
  • Eromba - Vegetables and potatoes boiled with a lot of red chillies or Umorok with ngari (fermented fish), dry fish and mashed together.
  • Morok metpa is a coarse-paste prepared with green or dry red chillies. They should be boiled with ngari in a pan and then it should be mashed with salt; fried fish pieces can also be added to it. chopped onions and coriander leaves should be added to it and mixed. Other dishes are- kang-hou (various vegetables fried dry in oil with traditional spices), paknam (fish cake), nga-thongba (fish curry), ooti, pakora thongba, chagem pomba, keli chana, alu kangmet (boiled potato mashed with fried red chilli and salt and dressed with mustard oil), sana thongba which is prepared with paneer in Manipuri style, a-nganba (steam vegetables, such as pumpkin, sweet pea, carrots, and French beans).
  • Singju is a salad prepared with finely chopped cabbage, onions, lotus stems, tree beans, coriander leaves, sinju pan, ginger, heibi mana and lots of seasonal vegetables mixed with ngari. Boiled kidney beans are optional and the dish is seasoned with red chilli flakes, salted to taste, with red roasted sesame powder and roasted chick peas powder.
  • Umorok – literally ‘tree chilli’ u=tree; morok = chilli. It is garnished with maroi (maroi namakpi, maroi nakuppi, awa phadigom, mayang-ton, toning-khok tilhou, coriander leaves).

Drink [ edit ]

Tea and coffee [ edit ].

In Manipur, tea is more popularly consumed as compared to coffee. Tea is readily available in almost all the hotels but you can't expect the same thing for coffee. Both drinks are not native to Manipur. So, there are no Manipuri terms for these drinks. The common Indian term "Chaa" (not "Chai") is used to refer to tea and for coffee, it's the same pronunciation - "Kofee".

Alcoholic beverages [ edit ]

The Manipuri collective term for all liquors like alcohol, beer, wine, etc. is "Yu" ("Yoo"). It's common among the tribal people of the hills of Manipur. Among the majority Meitei tribal, it's not legally allowed. However, the Chakpa caste inside the Meitei ethnicity is an exception. The Chakpa dominated areas like Andro , Kakching , Khurkhul, Sekmai, etc. have some of the most famous breweries in Manipur. In some Chakpa villages, the term "wanglei" (/waang-lei/) is used instead of the general term "Yu" ("Yoo").

Pineapple and orange juices [ edit ]

Manipur is extremely famous for the production of pineapple and orange juices. These fruits are produced in bulk from the hill districts and the hilly areas of the plain districts. Notably, pineapple is the state fruit of Manipur. Pineapple and orange juices manufactured in Manipur are annually exported to foreign nations, including Japan. The Manipuri terms for pineapple and orange are "kihom" (/kee-hom/) and "komla" (/kom-laa/) respectively. Among the fruit festivals organised in Manipur, pineapple festivals and orange festivals are the most popular ones.

Stay safe [ edit ]

tourist map of manipur

Large-scale riots broke out throughout Manipur between the Meitei people and Kuki people in May 2023. The military was authorised to shoot and kill any rioters along with applying regular riot-control weapons. Stay away from protests, monitor local media, and follow instructions from local authorities. Christians and Hindus are also advised to keep a low profile, since rioters may associate those religious identities with their respective enemy groups.

Manipur has distinct valley people (plain people) and hill people (mountain people). The Meitei people ( Manipuri-speaking people) are the predominant as well as the largest ethnicity and live in the central plain of Manipur. The non-Meiteis are regarded as the tribesmen communities (Nagas, Kukis, Zomi/Chin) that live in the surrounding hills. The Zomi/Chin would like to be united in an independent state with their tribespeople in Myanmar. There are multiple competing tribal militias that extort money from their countrymen, block roads, and occasionally erupt into warfare/killing.

The Imphal Valley (also called the Manipur Plain) is generally safe (see the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office website and similar sites), but hilly areas should be visited only on the basis of good local information, and the word 'disturbed' means no-go.

How to Explore Manipur in 4 Days: An Ideal Itinerary

Manipur is the “Jewel of India”, and rightly so. Located in the northeast, the three states of Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram encircle it on three sides. Nature has endowed Manipur with marvels like Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park, and Shirui Lily. Manipur is also a visual treat owing to her lush paddy fields, rolling hills, and picturesque valleys. Additionally, Manipur has a rich cultural heritage, thanks to a sundry of traditions existing among her 32 tribes. Manipur’s cultural affluence is also evident from the existence of various dance forms, such as “Ras Leela” (one of the classical dance forms of India) and “Khamba Thoibi”. Hence, Manipur offers some interesting experiences for any wandering soul.

Loktak lake Manipur

It has been our dream to explore every “Seven Sisters” state of northeastern India. As such, we were lucky to start our tryst with Manipur. We spent 4 days in Manipur. To sum up, each day brought new experiences and taught us new tidbits about Manipur.

So, here we have discussed a 4-day itinerary for Manipur and a host of other important things.

How to reach Manipur:

  • By air: Manipur’s sole airport, Bir Tikendrajit International Airport is located in Imphal. The most convenient way of reaching Imphal undoubtedly is by air. Daily multiple flights ply to Imphal from Kolkata and Guwahati, both of which are well – connected with rest of India.
  • By train: As of now, Manipur has no rail connectivity. The nearest rail station is at Dimapur in Nagaland.

How to travel within Manipur:

The bus service in Manipur is not very reliable. We noticed locals rely upon only tempo services for transportation. Hence, it’s better to book a cab beforehand for traveling throughout Manipur.

Sadu Chiru Manipur

Our trip was managed by Mr. Ashok Sapamcha of Sangai Moonlight Camping. Not only did he take care of every aspect of the trip, he also provided his valuable inputs and helped us in planning our itinerary.

What is the best time to visit Manipur:

The months from October to April are perfect for visiting Manipur since the weather remains pleasant for exploring the state. Avoid the monsoon months altogether, as the monsoon in the northeast is unrelenting.

Why you need to visit Manipur:

Manipur is a fascinating place, waiting to be explored.

  • There is the Loktak Lake , the largest freshwater lake of northeastern India. Loktak is renowned primarily for its ‘Phumdi’ or floating islands. These floating mass of vegetation indeed bequeath a unique attribute to Loktak.
  • Manipur has world’s only floating national park, Keibul Lamjao .
  • The gravely endangered, Sangai or Eld’s Deer , is also found only in this state.
  • Shirui Lily , a rare type of Lily, blooms once every year, solely at Ukhrul of Manipur.
  • Manipur is one of the few Indian states where cherry blossom blooms every year. Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated every year in November at Ukhrul.
  • Part of Manipur’s appeal lies in its diverse tribal cultures. There are around 32 tribes here, each having their own custom and culture.
  • Manipur’s history is also rather appealing. From the ancient Meitei rulers to the Battle of Imphal during the Second World War, you can find interesting remains here.

Loktak Lake scene

So, here’s the 4-day itinerary we followed in Manipur.

A rain-soaked morning welcomed us when we arrived at Imphal’s airport. Our destination was Moirang. However, we had planned to explore the following places on the way.

Peace Museum Manipur

  • Red Hill: This is worth visiting for the Second World War memorials. During the War, Manipur had turned out into a hotbed of fierce battles fought between the Allied powers (British-Indian forces) and Axis powers (Japan along with Indian National Army under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose). The encounters took place from July, 1943 to May, 1944. These battles occured at Red Hill or Maibam Lokpa Ching.
  • Indian Peace Memorial : It was built by the Government of Japan in 1994 for commemorating 50 th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal. Revered as a symbol of peace, it has been consecrated in memory of those who lost their lives in the War.
  • Imphal Peace Museum : The museum has remarkably preserved artifacts dating back to the War. You can find written first – hand experiences of the War, remains of soldiers’ uniform, shells, mortars etc. It is amazing how this museum honor memories of both the victor and the vanquished.
  • Sadu Chiru waterfall . The road took us through little villages until we reached our destination. The waterfall, also called Leimaram, lies at the end of a short hike through a forest. The waterfall is not much worthy and it is more like a local picnic spot. However, we did like the quaint ambiance.
  • Bisnhu Temple of Bishnupur . Built by King Khyamba, it is believed to be the oldest Bishnu temple of Manipur. The temple is certainly unique.

Bishnu Temple Manipur

It was afternoon when we reached Moirang. Jiteswar took us to a shanty hotel for dinner, which apparently serves the best Manipuri food in the town. A few moments of apprehension later, we did enjoy the simple lunch here.

Food in Manipur

After lunch, we proceeded to our next and final location. A right turn and there it was – the Loktak Lake. Two conjoined boats waited for us for taking us to the homestay. The boats navigated through phumdis and clusters of vibrant lotus. We also spotted many egrets and storks on our way.

The sun had already begun to set when we reached homestay. We watched a beautiful sunset while sipping tea and munching on colorful fryums. We chatted and did stargazing for the rest of the evening with a backdrop of crickets chirping and frogs croaking.

Sunset at Loktak Manipur

Where to stay in Loktak Lake:

We stayed at Loktak Aquamarine Floating Homestay. The homestay literally floats as it has been built on phumdis. For details on this unique homestay, check our blog here.

Cottages of Loktak Aquamarine Floating Homestay

The second day started with an early morning boat ride on Loktak Lake. This gives a brilliant scope to enjoy the serenity of the lake as also the daily activities of fishermen. You can watch scores of fishermen busy with their nets and traps for collecting the catch of the day. Many others gather edible weeds from the lake. We further spotted some women collecting lotus flowers, which are essential in Meitei religious rituals. For learning more on Loktak Lake, read our blog here .

Fishing at Loktak Lake

After having breakfast, we went out to explore the town of Moirang. We visited the following places:

  • Sendra view point: It provides a beautiful view of the Loktak Lake.
  • Chauba Ching view point: Previously, it formed a part of the now deserted Assam Rifles Camp. The watchtower now provides perfect view of the Loktak Lake and its phumdis.
  • INA Museum: Formerly headquarter of Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji, it now houses priceless documents, letters, photographs etc. of Netaji.
  • Ibodhou Thanjing Temple: Thanjing is one of the principal deities of Meitei community. This temple is dedicated to him. Moreover, Manipur’s famous “Lai Haraoba” festival is celebrated here.
  • Ima Keithel: Like Imphal, Moirang has an Ima Keithel or women’s market. Though it is smaller than the one found in Imphal, the spirit is same nonetheless.

Moirang Ima Market Loktak Lake

During sunset, we went out for another round of boating around Loktak.

Sunset at Loktak Lake

The next day, we went to the Keibul Lamjao National Park as early as possible. As mentioned earlier, it is the only floating national park in the world. It is a part of the expansive Loktak Lake and plays a significant role in the preservation of Loktak’s ecology. Moreover, Keibul Lamjao is the home of the vulnerable Sangai deer.

Keibul Lamjao Manipur

The Sangai deer are primarily visible in the early morning. They come in herds for grazing during this time. We were lucky enough to spot a few, including a stag and a fawn. Learn more about Keibul Lamjao in our blog here.

We bade Moirang adieu and moved on to Imphal. The day was reserved for exploring the beautiful capital city of Manipur.

A visit to Imphal remains incomplete without visiting the following places:

Kangla Fort Manipur

  • Kangla Fort: Regarded as the prime attraction of Imphal, it served as the seat of power of the Meitei rulers right from the ancient period up to the conquest of Manipur by the British in 1891 AD.
  • Ima Keithel: It is the famous women’s market of Manipur. Accordingly, it is believed to be the largest market of its kind in the world.
  • Shree Shree Govindajee Temple: It is the largest Vaishnavite temple of Manipur.
  • Imphal War Cemetery: Here lies the graves of those valiant soldiers who fought for the Allied side and lost their lives in the War.
  • Nupi Lan Memorial Complex: Its purpose lies in preserving the memories of the brave-heart Manipuri women martyrs who fought against the British on 13 th December, 1939.
  • Manipur State Museum: It displays different tribal attire, royal costumes, weaponry, valuable historical documents and scores of other priceless artifacts.
  • Manipur Zoological Garden: Along with Sangai, there are Hoolock gibbon (India’s only ape), Slow Loris, Himalayan Sloth Bear and others. In case if you missed Sangai at Keibul Lamjao, you can see a few here.

Ima Market Manipur

Where to stay in Imphal:

We stayed at Yum & Hills Cottage. It is a pretty homestay, located on the outskirts of Imphal. The cottages resemble traditional Manipuri houses and are spread across a nice garden. Also, the owners are warm and helpful.

For our last day, we visited the Andro village . Located near Imphal, the first settlers of Manipur lived here initially. Andro is popular for four reasons:

Andro Manipur

  • Its traditional method of pottery called “Charai Taba” or coil pottery, practiced only by married women of the village.
  • Its indigenous alcoholic brew called “Sekmai” and “Andro”.
  • The ancient temple of Mei Mutaba dedicated to Panam Ningthou, the village deity.
  • The cultural complex cum museum which showcases the culture and conventions of northeast India’s diverse tribes.

Potter at Andro

From Andro, we travelled to Sanamahi Kiyong temple, perched atop the Nongmaijing Hills. Lord Pakhangba, the ancient Meitei God, is worshipped here. Regarded as the main center of Sanamahism, it attracts pilgrims not only from Manipur but also neighbouring states of Assam and Tripura. The temple in its brilliant colors stands out amidst the greenery of the hills.

Sanamahi Temple Manipur

Our last destination was Langei Model Village. We wanted to watch weavers weaving their magic on textiles. However, owing to the pandemic situation, weavers have gradually stopped coming to the center and prefer weaving at home. There was only one woman, working with her tools and weaving a ceremonial ‘Phanek’.

Things to remember:

  • Like other northeastern states of India, Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for entering Manipur. You can get it beforehand from the online portal of Manipur Government . Or you can make one at the airport on arrival.
  • Carry your Covid – 19 vaccination certificate if you have both the doses. In case you are yet to get your vaccine, carry a negative RT-PCR test result done 72 hours prior of travelling.
  • Gone are the days when Manipur was volatile. At present, it is absolutely safe for traveling.
  • The ecology of Loktak is vulnerable. Therefore, while visiting Loktak Lake, refrain from littering and using plastic.
  • Same goes for Keibul Lamjao National Park. Its absolutely important to travel responsibly here as the ecosystem is at risk owing to unchecked human interference.
  • Respect the customs and culture of the locals.

The Mesmerizing state of Manipur

Nestling inside a verdant green bend of North East India is the strikingly gorgeous tiny Shangri La called Manipur. Literally which means - ‘ A Jeweled Land ’ this petite area is an authentic ecstasy on the globe where Mother Nature has been superfluous munificent in her gratuity. Mythology says that unearthing of Manipur is the product of the glee the God to start dancing. It is this notable offer that gives Manipur an exclusive uniqueness of her own. Sanctified with a hygienic climate, famed for its idiosyncratic edifying prototype and its verdant picturesque splendor, widen the tourists an affable temptation to stopover at Manipur.

Unscathed and purely untouched Manipur swears to be the grand discovery for the travelers. An egg-shaped vale bordered by the azure green hills, prosperous in art and custom has enthused metaphors as the " Switzerland of the East " with its gushing torrents, nibbling rivers, flooring of flowers, beautiful blooms and lethargic lakes. The dale state of Manipur is enclosed by Nagaland in the north, Mizoram in the south, higher Burma in the east and Cachar borough of Assam in the west. The polished lakes of Manipur are renowned for the diversity of orchids. In addition, being the hub of cultural and business activities, the capital city of Imphal is ornamented with two War Cemeteries, Govindajee Temple, Women bazaar, etc. The Bishnu temple at Bishnupur constructed in 1467 A.D; Keibul Lamjao, the only suspended national park in the world; the Orchid Yard at Khongampat, etc are places meaning visiting. Loktak Lake or the Freshwater Lake of Manipur is where most of the natives of Manipur go fishing for their meat. The unusual luxury to observe are the hovering islands generally recognized as Phumdi that is made out of the twist of soggy hoes and other plants. The marshland is marshy and is complimentary for a number of species to flourish.

The conventional form of Manipur dance - the Manipuri, which is based and enthused by the theme of Lord Krishna and his adored Radha love story and the commitment of the Gopis (companions) towards Lord Krishna, was created by Rajarsee Bhagyachandra who also created the famous Ras Lila. This elegant and leisurely style of dance moves makes it one of the most applauded classical dances of India. The attire is graceful and is nicely embellished clothes that gleam to the prettiness of the art form.

The Manipur State Museum established in 1969 has been the vital power in conservation and exhibit numerous mores, nature, Art forms and the past of the state. The Museum has urbanized currently into an adaptable source and boasts of proficiency in diverse arms. The galleries illustrated unusual facets of the state through illumination upon nearly every feature viz. Ethnology, Natural History, Art work and Handicraft, Archeology etc. The Khwairamband Bazaar is a huge enclosed market divided into two segments on the both faces of the Khwairamband Road. Vegetables, fishes, domestic utensils & rigging and fruits are vended on one side and vibrant handloom stoles, phaneks, khudeis, bed sheets on the other. The bazaar is very unusual in the logic that all the shop owners are women.

Not too far from here, is an avenue where attractive bamboo silos and furnishings are sold. Apart from these, the Manipur Zoological Garden, another popular attraction is situated about 6 kilometers from Imphal, towards the west. Elegant brow-antlered deer, "Sangai" one of the uncommon species in the world, can be seen here in sylvan environs. An excursion to this garden, at the base of the pine-growing knolls in the westernmost area of Lamphelpat is truly pleasurable.

Detailed satellite map

Google satellite map provides more details than Maphill's own maps of Manipur can offer. We call this map satellite , however more correct term would be the aerial , as the maps are primarily based on aerial photography taken by plain airplanes.

These planes fly with specially equipped cameras and take vertical photos of the landscape. Captured images have to be georectified, and it is also necessary to remove distortion caused by the plane tilt and the elevation differences on the ground. The photography used in the maps is usually three to four years old.

Mercator map projection

This map of Manipur is provided by Google Maps, whose primary purpose is to provide local street maps rather than a planetary view of the Earth. Within the context of local street searches, angles and compass directions are very important, as well as ensuring that distances in all directions are shown at the same scale.

The Mercator projection was developed as a sea travel navigation tool. It preserves angles. If you wish to go from Manipur to anywhere on the map, all you have to do is draw a line between the two points and measure the angle. If you head this compass direction, and keep going, you will reach your destination.

Easy to use

This map is available in a common image format. You can copy, print or embed the map very easily. Just like any other image.

Different perspectives

The value of Maphill lies in the possibility to look at the same area from several perspectives. Maphill presents the map of Manipur in a wide variety of map types and styles.

Vector quality

We build each detailed map individually with regard to the characteristics of the map area and the chosen graphic style. Maps are assembled and kept in a high resolution vector format throughout the entire process of their creation.

Manipur: Special polling stations to be set up for displaced voters

Ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, 29 special polling stations have been set up for over 5,000 internally displaced persons in Manipur, ensuring their participation in the elections despite recent ethnic clashes.

Vaidehi Jahagirdar

Manipur, which has been marred by recent ethnic clashes, has led to the internal displacement of over 50,000 people while claiming 175 lives (as of September 15, 2023).

Addressing the media about the government's preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in the violence-hit Manipur, the Imphal West Deputy Commissioner said that, upon the guidance received by the central government, a significant arrangement has been made for the 5000 internally displaced people of Manipur so that they can also cast their votes.

"Twenty-nine such polling stations have been opened ahead of the general elections," he said.

"The people displaced within the district will cast their votes at their designated polling stations. There is no specific arrangement for them apart from the transportation services that we will provide. For people from other parliamentary constituencies who were shifted to Imphal West in light of the violence, we have opened special polling stations. For Inner Manipur, we have arranged for 29 such polling stations. There are about 5,000 internally displaced people," he added.

Further, the official also opened up about the plan of setting up some polling stations at relief camps for the displaced people. "Everyone will be given the opportunity to cast their votes," he said.

On the current situation in Manipur, the deputy commissioner emphasised that normalcy has returned to the Northeast state and elections will pass peacefully.

"We have stepped up security measures and are hopeful that the elections will pass off peacefully. We have identified vulnerable polling stations, which are to be manned by Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel. The total number of such polling stations is increasing, considering the prevailing situation in the state. Every movement and activity is being solidly watched and monitored," he added.

The official also mentioned that strict vigilance is being followed on the social media platform and that necessary action would be taken to take down offensive, misleading, or mischievous posts as and when necessary.
