Desert camping: a guide to a successful camp in arid climes

Our 8 tips for desert camping help you safely enjoy the desert's incredible natural beauty, unusual wildlife and plants and unique adventures

Tents in Death Valley California

For many of us, the quintessential camping experience is set on the shore of an idyllic lake surrounded by an evergreen pine forest with granite peaks in the distance, an enjoyable adventure that entails only a moderate amount of survival skills and gear. But for outdoor enthusiasts, many must-see iconic landmarks may require pitching a tent in the desert – Death Valley, Arches National Park (check out our guide to the best hikes in Moab, Utah ) and the Grand Canyon are just a few of those places.

Though it might conjure up cartoonish images of vast, featureless, sun-bleached clay where no plant or animal can survive, the desert actually offers incredible natural beauty, unusual wildlife and plants, unique activities like slot canyoneering and some of the most jaw-dropping geological phenomena you will ever see. In addition, the arid climate can actually be a welcome change if you’re used to wet weather conditions. Though it’s a bit more rigorous, desert camping is absolutely possible, and can be very fun, but it’s a different beast altogether from forest camping and requires some specific preparation.

Whether you’re a seasoned camper, or just learning the basics of how to plan a camping trip , there are some important health and safety measures that you will need to take in order to have a successful – and fun – desert camping trip.

Man Camping in Desert near Moab, Utah

1. Know when to go

Summer is obviously the most popular time for camping, but the most uncomfortable and dangerous for desert camping. Though it’s certainly a much quieter time to camp in the desert, you’d need to be prepared for highs in the 100s and spending a lot of time hiding in the shade.

The most pleasant times for desert camping are definitely in the spring and fall, where temperatures tend to be comfortably in the 70s during the day, and not yet down to freezing at night. However, this is also the busiest time for desert camping so if you’re looking for solitude, you’ll have to get somewhere really remote.

Winter is the quietest time for desert camping and you’ll probably have your pick of campsites. The days can still be quite pleasant with highs in the 50s and 60s, but you might be looking at subzero nights.

2. Drink plenty of water

Needless to say, having access to water is crucial when it comes to desert camping. A desert is defined as an area of land that receives no more than 10 inches of precipitation in a year, where the evaporation generally exceeds annual rainfall. It’s by definition an arid climate where you’re more prone to dehydration, and not often home to large bodies of water, so you want to make sure you have a good water source.

One easy way around this is to reserve a spot in a developed campground that has water available, but if you’re planning on wild camping, you’ll need to make sure you carry a lot of water in with you, and bring a water filtration system in case you need to stock up from natural sources. Experts recommend drinking a gallon of water a day in the desert to avoid dehydration. The more physical activity you have planned, the more water you should bring, and drink. If you are planning on doing lots of physical activities like hiking or biking, bring a hydration pack and electrolyte tablets to replace lost minerals and help you retain water.

3. Pack for extreme heat – and cold

Most of us think of the desert as a hot place, but it’s actually often a land of extremes. In Moab, Utah for example, the daily highs in October can be in the 70s and very pleasant, but at night temperatures can drop down close to freezing. The sandy ground of the desert doesn’t absorb heat very well, instead sending the energy from the sun back out and super heating the air just above the ground, which is why it gets so hot during the day. The reason it gets so cold at night is down to the lack of humidity; water retains heat well so it traps heat close to the ground in humid environments, but without it the heat quickly dissipates once the sun sets.

All of this means you’ll want to bring clothes – and a tent and sleeping bag – meant to protect you against both extreme heat and cold. When it comes to clothing, moisture wicking material is a good bet. As we explained in our article on moisture wicking material , it helps speed up your body’s natural cooling process while you’re hiking during the day, and dries you off faster at night once temperatures drop.

It’s hard to know how to dress, but the best bet is to bring several light layers, including a sleeveless top for during the day and a long sleeved top like a base layer that can go over it to provide sun protection and keep the chill off. No matter how hot it will be during the day, bring a down jacket or fleece that you can pull on over the whole lot at night, and a warm hat like a beanie.

If you like to hike in shorts , also bring a light pair of your best hiking pants and long underwear for the evening hours, but the most versatile option is zip-off pants that can become shorts when it’s hot.

In addition to clothing, you’ll want to have a three-season tent and sleeping bag since you might be moving through several seasons in one 24-hour period.

4. Beware of flooding

We know we’ve talked a lot about how dry it is in the desert, but believe it or not, drowning is actually the leading cause of death in the desert. It’s a myth that deserts receive no rainfall, and when it comes, even a little rain can cause a life-threatening flash flood due to the low saturation rate of the soil.

The most important thing to know is where to pitch your tent to stay safe. Naturally, if you can find an area that offers shade, such as in a canyon or near a large rock formation, you’re going to go for it. An area to avoid, however, is the dry bed of a desert stream running through a canyon. These can seem ideal as they’re flat and might offer shade, but they’re also the first place to fill up with water if it rains.

5. Carry sun protection

Shade is in low supply and high demand in the desert thanks to sparsity of cloud coverage combined with arid conditions which make it difficult for many trees to grow. Ideally, bring a tarp or other pop-up structure that provides good shade from the sun, especially if you’re hanging out at camp in the middle of the day. The inside of your tent can be a dangerous place in extreme heat as it magnifies the effect, so don’t plan on that as an option. You should also bring a good sunhat and sunglasses to protect you on your hikes.

6. Know the signs of heatstroke

According to the CDC, an average of 658 people succumb to extreme heat each year in the US. Heatstroke and heat-related illnesses are a real concern in the desert, especially if you’re exerting yourself with hiking and biking and you’ll want to know the signs of heatstroke.

Heatstroke is caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures, and it requires immediate medical attention or you risk complications and even death. Signs of heat stroke include high body temperature, confusion, alteration in sweating, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, racing heart rate and headache. If you think a person may be experiencing heatstroke, seek immediate medical help.

Ultimately, the best way to treat heatstroke is to avoid it in the first place. Practice prevention by seeking shade in the middle of the day, staying well hydrated and getting out on the hiking trails early in the morning or in the evening if the forecast is for high temps.

7. Protect yourself against venomous critters

Though it’s rare to see a rattlesnake or a scorpion out in the wild, the desert is home to such critters and you should assume they are nearby and practice precautions to stay safe – the bites are rarely deadly but they will certainly ruin your trip. The main thing you can do is stay alert during the day and shake out your clothes before dressing and your sleeping bag before climbing in. Even if it’s warm at night, sleep with your tent zipped up to avoid any unwelcome intruders.

8. Travel in a reliable car

The final piece of advice if you’re travelling into the desert is to do so in a reliable vehicle – it’s one of the more dangerous places to break down. That means making sure you’re up to date with servicing and oil changes and if you’re planning on traversing rough terrain, do it in a high clearance vehicle with four-wheel drive.

OUR REVIEWS

What our guests think about our camp, tours and guides!

Abdul was an extremely fun and entertaining guide for us. If you want to have exhilarating fun in a jeep, please ask for Abdul! Super friendly, understanding, helpful, funny, and best of all - an amazing driver. Everything about this 2 day tour package was magnificent. From the jeep tour itself, to the very comfy tent and amenities, to the extremely tasty and filling dinner, and of course the after party to the dinner!

Sit back and have shisha and authentic tea with the hosts and go stargazing in the one of best areas in the world - the dessert of Wadi Rum. If you are hesitant about this, don’t worry at all and have a fun and relaxing time.

Abdul and the family were amazing to us. They were always looking that nothing was missing too us. Food was delicious and abundant. Camp has everything you need, and manager and staff are always checking if you need anything and make the stay easy. The jeep tour was great as well, the driver /guide was helpful, fun, and adaotative to the time we wanted to spend on each place. Also he cooked a great meal for lunch. Then we slept on a cave, and again, the experience is amazing, and we were provided of enough food, blankets and everything for us. Overall amazing experience, we enjoyed the desert and local people and food.

Astounding views and a great tour guide with an amazing sense of humor. Rushing through the dunes in the back of the pickup was a brand new experience. The guide, Abdul, showed us some of the places with the best views and even took our pictures. You can also expect some great advice about cliffs and life in general from him, as well as a quick guide on how to hunt mountain goats. We could also taste a bit of Bedouin life by gathering wood for a campfire and then drinking Bedouin tea while watching the sunset. Would 100% recommend.

10 Wadi Rum Desert Camps: An Epic Experience in Jordan

The Dead Sea and ancient Petra ruins are what the middle eastern country of Jordan is primarily known for—and trust me, they are absolutely two of the top things to do before you die ! But, there is also one of my favorite unexpected treasures nearby—Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert.

To get the ultimate experience in the 720 square kilometers of heart stopping desert landscape, you must do overnight stays at one on the Bedouin camps. I promise it will be an experience you will not forget.

The evenings by the campsite in combination with the traditional food and the spectacular views you’ll have of the surrounding desert as soon as you step out of your tent make for a truly epic experience you can only get to enjoy in this area of Jordan.

10 Wadi Rum Desert Camps: An Epic Experience in Jordan

A Guide to the Bedouin Camps in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert

What is the wadi rum desert.

Located in the southern part of Jordan is a vast desert, made of red sand and rock formations shaped so strangely they look like something out of this planet. This is the Wadi Rum Desert, also nicknamed as Valley of the Moon by those who have visited before.

It is a special and popular location to visit and protect for a number of reasons. First, due to its red appearance coupled with the impressive sandstone mountains, you will feel as if you stepped through a portal and arrived on Mars. Due to its landscape and color scheme, it has also been featured as a location in numerous famous films, such as The Martian and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen .

Its dramatic panoramic land is where you can follow the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia, ride camels through the sun-kissed desert and be amongst the semi-nomadic Bedouin people who still live in the area.

Besides being an exceptional treat for film buffs, Jordan Wadi Rum is also important for culture and world history. It boasts thousands upon thousands of rock carvings, inscriptions, and archeological sites, offering insight on the evolution of earliest forms of alphabet and human way of thinking.

The rock carvings (aka petroglyphs) span through eras from Neolithic all the way to Nabataean. From these petroglyphs, it is also possible to view the way climate has changed over time. Meanwhile, the inscriptions feature four different scripts, showcasing how widespread the literacy rate was in the ancient societies inhabiting the Arabian Peninsula.

Wadi Rum

Camping in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert

Just like with everything else you will experience during your trip to Jordan, time at a Wadi Rum camp is a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list experience. There are dozens of tented campsites spread out in the over 400 square miles of desert, and it’s an adventure to spend even one night at one!

On a typical evening there will a campfire, traditional Jordanian food, hookah smoking and stargazing—not to mention all the sightseeing fun during the day.

Now it is possible for you also to get a taste of that authentic Bedouin life and lifestyle, by camping out at one of the many desert camps in Wadi Rum. Of course, there are multiple options of camping for you to choose from in Jordan Wadi Rum. Each of them comes with their unique features and here are the top Bedouin camps to stay in:

You’ll get to try out Bedouin food and drinks, hear stories of their history, sing their songs, and more. There are tents you can sleep in, or you can go full out on the authentic experience and sleep right under the stars, by the fire or on the dunes.

Located within a scenic spot of Wadi Rum, at Obeid’s Bedouin Life Camp you can also experience the traditional and authentic ways of Bedouin life. They offer half a dozen different types of tours in the desert, including a one week long yoga retreat.

4. Wadi Rum Magic Nature Camp

6. Bedouin Tours Camp

7. Wadi Rum Desert Heart Camp

At Wadi Rum Desert Heart Camp , you can enjoy a camping experience similar to many other Wadi Rum destinations. In addition, it is possible for you to rent a car and ski equipment right from the accommodation, and especially skiing is possible to be enjoyed nearby.

8. Hasan Zawaideh Camp

Located close to where The Martian was filmed, the hosts of Hasan Zawaideh Camp aim to offer you an unforgettable stay in Wadi Rum, operating as a family business among five brothers. There are half a dozen tent options to choose yours from, including a Martian-like globe tent, and there are numerous activities you can experience with them, including mountain climbing.

9. Wadi Rum Fire Camp

Hosted by a Wadi Rum local, you are guaranteed to enjoy a family-like experience when staying at this camp. You will get to enjoy spectacular views, local foods, and a variety of fun tours when you stay at Wadi Rum Fire Camp .

10. Captains Desert Camp

Finally, Captains Desert Camp is the camp I stayed in during my visit to Wadi Rum Desert. These camps are eco-friendly, using solar power as their source of energy, and they also offer a variety of tours, such as camel riding, desert jeep rides, hot air balloon rides, hiking trips, and even arrangements to visit Petra.

Captains Desert Camp

An easy option would be to just book a full Wadi Rum tour, that includes lunch, dinner, jeep tour and overnight camping and this one is top rated: Wadi Rum Full Experience

Typical Camping Experience

To get started on your camping experience, you’ll have to enter Wadi Rum through the Visitor’s Center, with the entrance fee being around $7. From there you’ll continue onto your camp. You’ll be assigned a tent based on your booking, and you can go explore your surroundings immediately.

Jordanian Food at Wadi Rum

Most camps offer you meals during the day, and dinner is often a favorite among guests. Besides dining, there’s often a little party of sorts held in the main tent, complete with Bedouin tea, shisha, and the like. There’ll probably also be a bonfire outdoors where you can socialize, and most of all listen to Bedouin stories and songs.

During the daytime you can join different types of tours, from simple camel tours to more thorough 4×4 tours.

Here are some jeep tour options if they are not included with your stay:

  • Full Day Jeep Tour & Traditional Lunch – Wadi Rum Desert Highlights
  • Full Day Desert Tour, Jeep & Hiking

Wadi Rum Joran Truck Tour

Other Things to Do in Wadi Rum

Besides camping out at a Wadi Rum Bedouin camp, there are plenty of other activities, which were already glossed over above, through which you can get the full experience in Wadi Rum. Of course sightseeing is one of the top things to do in Wadi Rum, starting with Lawrence’s Spring. Although Lawrence’s Spring isn’t much more than a mere puddle of water, it is considered to be one of Wadi Rum’s biggest highlights.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom is another, although much more impressive. It isn’t featured on most of the tours, but it is located right by the Visitor’s Center if you happen to be near there. Khaz’ali Canyon is another absolutely stunning piece of the desert landscape, as is Siq Umm Tawaqi. Additionally, there are multiple rock bridges that you can climb on, and they are typically offered as a visiting spot during a tour.

These tours will take you to those sites, and many more:

  • Full-Day Jeep Tour: “Wadi Rum Highlights”
  • Private Two Day Tour Exploring Petra, Wadi Rum and Dead Sea from Amman

Camel Caravan at Wadi Rum

As for other activities, you can climb up dunes, go hiking around the desert, stargaze at night time, ski down the dunes, and so much more. You can experience many of these with a Jordan Wadi Rum tour, a couple of which are listed to you below.

Desert Camel Ride at Wadi Rum

Best Wadi Rum Tours

Just stepping out of your tent and seeing the vast desert around you is a spectacular experience on its own, but by joining one or more of the tours arranged around Wadi Rum, you can truly get the best of it all.

There are incredibly many tour options you can join, either through sites like Viator and Get Your Guide, or through a local operator like Wadi Rum Excursions, Wadi Rum Tours, and Wadi Rum Escape. You can go on a half day or full day jeep safari, a camel safari, a hot air balloon ride, and so on.

If you book with Viator, you can find your options which combine Wadi Rum with other destinations such as Petra. They are great especially if you are pressed for time, but if you want to fully take in what Wadi Rum has to offer, you’ll want to choose a local operator instead, and many tours can be booked directly through your accommodation, too.

Wadi Rum Tour

My Experience at Captains Desert Camp

Driving down the seemingly endless dusty road into the largest wadi in the  country of Jordan it was easy to see why it was the filming location for The Martian, a movie set on Mars. Also known as The Valley of the Moon, it was dry and desolate.

Layered in countless shades of beige and desert red.

Our shuttle arrived at the main barracks of Captains Desert Camp on the edge of Wadi Rum, parking on a mosaic of arid cracked dirt. This was just a pit stop, as we would actually be spending the night at their private camp deeper in the desert. But, the 20-person shuttle bus we were on wasn’t able to maneuver us any further

We needed a better-equipped vehicle.

Luckily, we showed up just in time for lunch, so before heading out we loaded our plates with traditional Jordanian food at their long buffet. A large, colorful pitched-tent lined with oriental carpets and cushioned bench seating was the dining room.

As we snacked on dishes like fattoush , an older male Bedouin musician was perched on a short stage playing the oud, an oriental instrument similar to the mandolin.

After lunch, three old Toyota 4×4 pickup trucks, fitted with benches in the open-air bed, were waiting for us. We were going on a five-hour desert safari through this UNESCO World Heritage site , heading further into the landscape to explore, before being dropped off at our barracks for the night. Though riding inside the cab was an option, I hopped into the back wanting to feel the wind in my hair and the sun on my face.

We began driving, a cloud of dust trailing behind us.

The aroma of sage, cardamom and cinnamon permeated the tent at our first stop for a cup of Bedouin tea. It was the teashop like no other, nestled between the rocks with a sand dune view from the seats inside. Tea is an important ritual for the Bedouins; there is never a wrong time for a cup, this includes in the middle of the desert.

Saying no to this liquid generosity is just plain rude.

Next the trucks brought us to what appeared to be in the middle of nothingness, where a dozen camels laid resting on the warm sand making chewing motions and showing their large yellowed teeth.

It was a camel spectacle.

But that wasn’t why we were here; it was for the inscriptions that were carved into the rocks that lay directly across from the herd of chomping animals. These petroglyphs depicted people, footprints and animals dating back to prehistoric times. The over 35,000 chiseled images and inscriptions dotted throughout the desert tell 12,000 years of stories about the people that have inhabited Wadi Rum, including the Nabataeans.

Dunes were common in the valley, but none as impressive as the expansive Al-Hasany red sand dunes that back up to Jebel Umm Ulaydiyya. Here the drivers put the trucks in park at the base of one of the tallest slopes claiming it had the best view from the peak. There was only one way to find out, and it involved a steep climb.

Let’s climb a sand dune.

We took off our shoes, sinking our feet into the soft sand and ascended to the summit. Once at the top, some of us sat cross-legged taking in the natural beauty of our surroundings, while others tried to capture the best jumping shots with a sea of sand as the background.

As evening fell, the last stop we made was in what seemed like the middle of Wadi Rum. This is where we abandoned our trucks since from here it was only a short walk to the camp. But before heading that direction, we all sat quietly on the valley floor waiting for a performance of another kind.

Nobody said a word as the sun began to set over the rocks, lighting up the desert in a flurry of color.

After five hours of exploration we ended up at a private camp deep in the desert. Entering through a candlelit walkway, there were about twenty individual tents that surrounded a central courtyard. This patio had a campfire that was already blazing when we arrived. Comfortable and colorful cushions surrounded the fire pit, a place where we convened after dropping our belongings off in our individual tents.

Our dinner had started to be prepared well before we arrived. With a cooking time of four hours, it had to be. The Bedouin staff were honoring us with a special feast, a zarb , an ancient and traditional cooking practice that is done underground.

A unique Jordanian barbecue.

After our casual dinner we sat back around the fire for some authentic entertainment that did not include a television or the Internet. Lively Bedouin tribe music began to be played as the natives taught us how to do the zaghrouta , a rapid ululation of a la-la-la-la sound that is used to express celebration.

Trilling of the voices and clapping hands echoed through the desert.

After the music had tapered down, the ones who stayed up later spent the evening stargazing at the twinkling sky, drinking Jordanian Syrah and smoking hookah. When the crackling of the fire started to dwindle and the bottle of wine was empty, I retreated to the cozy room in my goat hair tent where there was no electricity or amenities other than a full-size bed, a wooden chair and a box of candles. I lit one, and fell into a peaceful sleep where the only sounds you could hear were from the faint voices of chatter from those still awake and the flicker of the flame.

I woke up the next morning well before any of the others in order to climb to the peak of an untouched sand dune and watch as the sun rose over the already picturesque landscape.

Miles from the nearest town, there was complete stillness.

In our normal lives random noise is the norm, but not here. There may not have been a quieter place on earth than in the wee morning hours of Wadi Rum.

Back at the camp a slew of kneeling camels lined the walkway. Inside, our Jordanian guide Mohammad had set up a beauty shop of sorts on one of the benches in the dining area, where he was expertly wrapping traditional Bedouin scarves around camper’s heads. These wraps would be helpful for our last adventure, a long camel ride through the dry desert back to the main camp.

I approached the humped animals, picking my favorite of the bunch; a choice specifically made by the colorful red and yellow saddle he was wearing. Holding on tight to the pommel, I boarded him as he was kneeling and he slowly stood to his feet jerking me forward. We then started on the journey back to where this experience began, following the paths that thousands had before.

I had the best time discovering Jordan’s Wadi Rum, and I believe you will, too, regardless of if you stay in the same Bedouin camp as I did or choose a different one. Each camp showcased above is well-liked by their guests, offers a family-like atmosphere, and can take you on some awesome tours around the desert.

No matter if you just stay for one night or multiple, you’ll have such a great combination of relaxing and thrilling time wherever you stay in Wadi Rum—and trust me, you’ll definitely feel like staying for longer than what you signed up for.

TIPS FOR VISITING JORDAN Where is Jordan? Jordan is a mostly Muslim country located in the Middle East, sharing its borders with Israel, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Wadi Rum is a 720 square kilometer dramatic desert in the southwestern corner of Jordan, near the Saudi Arabian border. Its diverse landscape consists of sheer sided sandstone and granite mountains, natural arches, narrow gorges and chiseled canyons. Getting Wadi Rum, Jordan: There are regular flights from the U.S. on Jordan’s national carrier, Royal Jordanian (www.rj.com), plus several other international carriers that will fly into Queen Alia International Airport located just south of Amman. From Amman Wadi Rum is about a 3-½ hour drive, though many visitors choose stay in Petra instead, which is roughly an hour and a half away. From Amman you can take a bus to Petra, since there is no bus service that goes all the way through to Wadi Rum. A JETT bus runs daily for around $14 USD and will drop you off in Petra were you could either hop on another bus or take a taxi. Your hotel (or call 079 5235257 to book a seat) can arrange a bus from Wadi Musa, the main tourist gateway to Petra, to Wadi Rum that leaves around 6:00am and costs just under $10 USD. Taxis run roughly $50 USD and many camps will be able to arrange taxi service. Viator  offers a private transfer from the airport to Petra for $68.75 USD then you can take a bus or taxi to Wadi Rum from there or for roughly $200 USD  AAT will give you a private transfer all the way to Wadi Rum. You can also get to Wadi Rum by renting a car, which can be the most flexible way to explore. The airport has numerous companies, many of which are also found in America (Dollar, Thrifty, Budget, etc.), so do a search on a site like RentalCars.com who will compare the rates from different car rental companies. The cost starts at around $40 USD per day. The roads are in good condition and the important signage will be in English as well as Arabic, but make sure you have a good map or GPS. Unless you rent a 4WD you won’t be able to truly explore Wadi Rum in your rental, but it will get you to the visitor’s center where tour or camp guides can pick you up. What Language do They Speak in Jordan? Arabic is the official language. Many Jordanians in the urban cities speak English, though fewer will in the smaller villages, especially the Bedouin elders. What is the Local Currency in Jordan? The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar. Some places will accept American Dollars, but it is not a guaranteed so exchange some money. ATMs can easily be found in Amman (and there is one at the airport), but can be challenging in the smaller towns. What Type of Plug do They Use? Jordan travel requires Plug C / D / F / G / J, 230v. Most outlets will be the same as the European with two round prongs. You will need an adapter and a converter if your devices are not dual voltage. I used the Celtic Universal Adapter with no problem. When’s the Best Time to Visit Wadi? The best time to visit Wadi Rum is from March to May or late September to November when the temperatures are moderate and rainfall is at a minimum. In the summertime the temperatures can soar up to 115 degrees, which will make exploring the desert next to impossible. In the winter the daytime temperatures may be comfortable in the mid 60s, but the evenings will get down to the low 40s, which will be chilly if you are sleeping in a tent with no heater.   How to Visit: For an overnight stay in a Bedouin tent it’s best to book online directly with the camp and have them arrange any tour experiences that you may be interested in. It is also very simple to make these arrangements once you get to the Wadi Rum visitor’s center. If you feel more comfortable booking with a U.S. tour operator who will plan your trip from start to finish then check the approved list on the Visit Jordan website (na.visitjordan.com). Getting Around: You will need a 4×4 to navigate Wadi Rum on your own, though it is best to have a Bedouin guide who knows the area accompany you. You can hire a guide at the visitor’s center who has his own truck or can hop into your rental. Otherwise most exploring of the desert is done on tours with trucks, camels, ATVs or on foot. Taxis can be arranged by your chosen camp to get you to nearby places outside of Wadi Rum, like the city of Aqaba along the Red Sea. Where to Stay in Petra: If you prefer to stay in Petra, The  Mövenpick Resort Petra is conveniently located right across the street from the Petra Visitor’s Center. A simpler, no-frills option is  Al Rashid Hotel in the city center who offers clean rooms and free breakfast.  Petra Moon Hotel boasts a roof terrace that overlooks the beautiful Petra Mountains. The newly renovated  Sharah Mountains  is a family run 3-star hotel known for its cleanliness and hospitality. Where to Eat in Petra Restaurant options are limited in the area, plus  y ou will most likely be eating all meals at your chosen camp where they are typically provided in the cost. Though if you want to venture the  Resthouse  (tel. 962 2018867) located in Wadi Rum Village is a good choice since they serve alcoholic beverages. You can also get a decent buffet lunch or dinner here for around $15 USD. If you are staying in Petra before or after your visit, take a cooking class at  Petra Kitchen   ( www.petrakitchen.com ) and then eat your deliciously homemade Jordanian meal. Don’t want to cook your own meal? Try the traditional lamb mansaf at the low-key  Reem Baladi  (Mid-Town on Tourist Street; Petra – Wadi Musa; tel. 0777312455). It’s where the locals go! If you’re not that hungry, head over to  TimeOut  (Tourist Street, Petra – Wadi Musa; tel. 962777809432) where you can get snacks and coffee while smoking shisha. With a couple extra days in Amman don’t miss stopping by the most legendary falafel stand in town, Hashem (Al-Amir Mohammed St Downtown; tel. 96264636440). It will be challenging to snag a seat, but you won’t be disappointed even if you are eating them in the overflow alleyway. Afterwards walk a few blocks over to  Habibah ; Al-Bank Al-Arabi downtown branch) who specializes in freshly baked Knafeh, a cheese pastry soaked in a sweet syrup and topped with crushed pistachios.   Other Wadi Rum Things to Do: Hot Air Balloon Ride: Get out of bed in the wee hours of the morning to get an unforgettable panorama of Wadi Rum in a hot air balloon . Royal Aero Sports Club (www.rascj.com ) offers a 50-60 minute birds-eye view for $182 USD. Ride a Camel: Do as Lawrence of Arabia did and ride a camel  through the arid desert. Rum Stars  offers multiday camel trekking, but a word of warning: going by camel is a bumpy ride, much more so than a horse. Camps will also arrange tours that can range from ten minutes to ten days. Climb Burdah Bridge: For the adventurous travelers who are not afraid of heights, stand on Burdah Bridge , the natural stone arch that sits 262 feet above the rock below. It’s a dizzying and challenging climb to the summit, but the photo op from the top is a once-in-a-lifetime. Many of the jeep safari tours make a stop here, but confirm this before booking. Go Sandboarding : Strap your feet onto a board and take a wild ride down a sand dune. Sandboarding  is similar to snowboarding, except if standing is too difficult it’s perfectly acceptable to sit or lie down. Many full day or more tours will include sandboarding, some of the jeep safari tours will offer a sandboarding option for an additional cost (around $20 USD). The Bedouin Lifestyle Camp offers a free snowboarding option upon request with all their jeep tours. Take a Jeep Safari Tour : A Jeep Safari tour is the best way to see what Wadi Rum has to offer in the least amount of time. Common stops on a few hour tour can take you to Burdah Bridge, Lawrence’s Spring, Al-Hasany Dunes, Nabatean Temple, and Khazali Canyon. Most, if not all, camps will offer a jeep safari, but you can also book on at the visitor’s center.. Though, it will be more cost effective to book this tour in combination with an overnight camp stay, as discounts will be offered.  Essential Information: Do not take any photos of the Bedouin people, especially the woman, without getting permission. The stars in Wadi Rum are unlike no other place, if you want to get photos of them be prepared with a tripod and knowing the proper settings for your camera. It’s easy to get lost in the desert, so it’s best to have a guide with you when exploring. If not, make sure to carry a compass and a map. US Citizens will need a visa, which can be purchased at the airport in Amman. Remember that some areas in Jordan, including some Wadi rum camps, are dry (no alcohol will be easily available) so grab a bottle or two in Amman or Petra. Make sure to drink more water than you think you need. You are in the desert where it can be easy to get dehydrated. It doesn’t hurt to stop by the pharmacy to pick up some  dehydration powder packets  that can easily be put into your water in case you feel dizzy. When there is a choice, hire the Bedouin people as much as possible to support their community. Many of them are available as drivers and guides at the visitor’s center. If possible, leave your large luggage behind at your hotel. Traveling with just a backpack or duffel bag makes navigating the soft sand of Wadi Rum much easier. Packing Tips: Pack a  scarf  or a  hat  and  sunscreen  because there is not much shade in Wadi Rum Wear comfortable walking shoes;  light hiking shoes  or  sturdy sandals  would work unless you plan on doing some serious climbing. A pair of  Keens  would be a good choice. Bring  tissues , not so much for when you are at the camp but you make have to pit stop behind a tree while on the safari, plus frequently there’s no toilet paper in the restrooms throughout Jordan. A good pair of  sunglasses  is necessary for the dust and sun. The sand will get everywhere so bring  durable clothes  that blend with the reddish colored sand. Anything white will discolor quickly! It can get chilly at night, so bring  layers of clothes . A long pair of  warm pants  and  sweatshirt  is a good idea. There can be some pesky mosquitos out there, load up on the  bug repellant . Many camps are lit by candles or turn off their lights at a certain hour, so bring a  flashlight  to find your way around at night. Jordan is primarily a Muslim country where many of the women choose to cover the curves of their body, hair and/or face. Though this is strictly a choice made by the individual, not a requirement, you should still be respectful to their customs by bringing  modest clothing  (no skimpy shorts or tops). Loose short sleeve t-shirts, ankle-length skirts, lightweight long pants, or capri-style are acceptable. Very helpful. I will apply these tips thanks for taking your time to come up with this awesome content

What a wonderful experience. I’m not sure I will ever get to Jordan, there are too many other things on my list, but I loved reading about your visit. Thanks for sharing

I was there with my nephew and it was wonderful. The first nigth I spent it in the luxury camp and something, I was with a tour very good, the next morning we went on a drive in camels for the sunshine… the second nigth my nephew and I spent the nigth in a camp with only 4 “tents” and we were the only people there!!! Only the nights were very simple with no very many stars, I think it was because of the season. We went on February.

49 Camping in The Desert Tips: Camp in the Heat Like a Pro

Camping in the desert brings a unique twist to the idea of camping in the middle of nowhere. not only are you usually far away from amenities and shopping, you are dealing with extreme heat and unusual critters..

tourism desert camp

The desert is beautiful beyond belief. But it can also be a very dangerous place when you are camping and hiking. It’s a fine line between an amazing desert camping experience and a total camping disaster. That means there’s a lot to learn before your first desert camping trip. So we pulled together our best camping in the desert tips to help you plan your trip.

Although we’ve been camping for decades, we were caught a bit off guard by some things on our first desert camping trip several years ago. You don’t always realize how different camping in the Rockies is from camping in the Utah desert. I have to confess that I became so overwhelmed by the heat on our first desert adventure that we grabbed a last minute hotel one night. Since then we’ve learned to love the desert and have desert camped in a camper van as well as our favorite tent. We’ve accumulated quite a long list of tips to make your desert camping a success.

Let’s Start with Your Camp Site

1 set up on high ground.

You might be surprised to learn that flash floods put you at higher risk of death in the desert than either dehydration or poisonous critter bites ( World Atlas ).

Why? Because between rains, creek beds (often called a wash) are very dry between rains. All the water has soaked into the desert soil. They often look like really great hiking trails. And a dry wash might even have random shade along the higher edges that appears to be the perfect camping site. However, when rain falls those dry beds can fill up in a matter of minutes with raging water. Even a distant heavy rain can quickly fill up the dry wash miles away.

So always set up your tent or camper on higher ground to avoid getting swept away by an unexpected rain. Use designated campsites when available, such as when BLM camping as these have been tested by hundreds of other campers.

2 Find Shade in the Land without Trees

Finding shade in the desert is easier said than done. But if you can capture a bit of shade your day at camp will be much more comfortable. As you select your site take into consideration any features that might create shade.

For example, we camped on a bluff near Big Bend National Park that continued to rise behind us on the Southwest side. That meant when we returned to camp in the evening, the sun had already dropped behind the higher ground, providing shade while we prepared camp dinner.

If you are lucky enough to find a tree, consider the angle of the sun and place your tent or camper to take advantage of as much shade as possible. You’ll be grateful for the little bit of shade that comes from a Saguaro Cactus or a Joshua Tree in the late afternoon.

3 Can’t Find Shade? Then Make Shade

If you can’t find shade, make shade! If you are car camping or in an RV, you can probably pack a traditional canopy. We really like this lightweight 12ft by 12ft canopy from REI because it is easy to pack.

However if backpacking or if space is tight consider using a lightweight tarp with your hiking poles as supports.

It’s important to have adequate guy lines to secure your canopy or tarp as desert winds can quickly turn that tarp into a balloon with one desert updraft. Don’t leave your shade tarp or canopy up when you are not at camp to avoid it blowing away.

For Tent Campers: Set Up Your Tent With Desert in Mind

4 start with a desert friendly tent.

The desert is a harsh environment. Not only does your tent need to survive the hot sun, you’ll also find high winds crossing the desert. And don’t forget those little critters that would love to nap in your tent. If you have the luxury of buying a tent just for desert camping, here are the key features to look for:

  • Aerodynamic Shape – Obviously so it won’t blow away. But also so you won’t feel it shaking all night if a wind storm hits. Dome shaped tents are great for the desert because the wind will blow around them rather than try to go through them like a flat sided tent.
  • Cooling or Heat Shield Technology – Modern designs work to reflect heat and keep the interior of tents cooler. These tents are more expensive, but if you plan to spend much time in the desert well worth the investment. The cooler temps also work well to shade you for afternoon naps.
  • Light Colored or Reflective Tent – If you can’t justify the expense of the technology, then at least make sure your tent is light colored so it reflects the heat rather than absorbs it.
  • Ventilation – Let that breeze through for natural cooling. Mesh is your friend. A front and back door or window with a mesh lining will allow the breeze to keep you cool.
  • Secure Floor to Keep Critters Out – Many backpackers love the lighter weight of floorless tents. However in the desert you’ll  be better off with a tent that seals up completely to keep critters out.

5 Properly Anchor Your Tent in the Desert Sand

A desert windstorm could keep you away all night shaking your tent. The solution is to properly anchor your tent. We’re often lazy about using all the guy lines when camping in the woods to get camp set up quickly. Well, desert camping is not the time to skip securing those lines.

Surprisingly, desert sand is often hard and rocky, not soft and squishy like a beach. If your campsite has firm ground then your regular stakes should hold securely as long as you place them at a 45 degree angle pointing away from your tent. Never put your stakes into the ground straight down because they will pull right out in the wind.

But then, many campsites will have soft sand and that requires a little more work to secure your guy lines. The most common technique is to use a deadman. That means wrapping the end of  your guy line around a large flat object (anything from aluminum foil to a flat rock). Then bury that object by laying it flat in a large hole that 8-12 inches dep in the sand. If possible stack rocks on top of the filled in hole to add extra weight. The weight of the sand and rocks on top of the flat surface will hold your tent securely in the wind.

6 Let the Breeze Cool You – Position Tent based on Wind Direction

On our recent trip to the deserts of West Texas , we wanted a bigger tent for comfort so took our old reliable triangle shaped Eureka . (We love this tent!) So to avoid fighting the wind, we positioned the tent so the wind could blow right through the mesh front door and out the back window. We also left the rain fly off most nights which exposed more mesh, allowing more air to move through.

Tips for a Great Night’s Sleep in the Desert

7 pack a usb rechargeable fan.

One of the smartest things I did on our Texas/New Mexico Desert Road Trip was to pack this USB battery powered fan. It’s much bigger than the usb fans you attach to your laptop. The thing could move some air. We hung it in our tent at night and ran it for a few hours until the temperatures dropped. Sweet!

8 Select a Versatile Sleeping Bag

Night temperatures in the desert can vary greatly. You know it’s going to be a lot cooler than the day, but how much is hard to predict. There are so many environmental variables that effect how much the temperature is going to drop.

As a rule of thumb, your sleeping bag for the desert should be able to keep you warm at least 60 degrees cooler than the expected day time temperatures. But know it probably won’t get that cold so you want to be comfortable at warmer temps too.

We pack a sheet for covering up when we first go to bed and the temps haven’t dropped much. You’ll find a sleeping bag that vents at the feet will also help you adjust your sleeping temperature.

9 Bring a Sleeping Mask

Ok, you left your rain fly off or your camper windows open to let the breeze through your tent but now that full moon is reflecting off the desert sand lighting up your campsite like mid afternoon. It’s really cool to watch the full moon for a little while… but then you need to go to sleep. So create your own darkness by slipping on a soft sleeping mask. You’ll find it much more comfortable than pulling yesterday’s stinky t-shirt over your face.

10 Consider Camping at Higher Elevations

My favorite trick for hot summer desert vacations is to look for higher elevations to camp. You’ll often find it 10 degrees cooler. For example when we did our 5 Utah National Parks Tour , we camped several nights in the desert mountains enjoying perfect sleeping temperatures in the 60s instead of the hotter night temperatures in Zion NP in the 80s.

Keep Your Camp Food Safe in the Desert

close up of javalina, a hairy pig like animal. He is rooting for food in desert campground

11 Protect Your Food From Desert Critters

The desert might seem like a desolate place, but animals and rodents come out as the night cools looking for food. Don’t let your food stash be their dinner. We’ve heard stories of javelinas destroying tents to get to the food. Coyotes will sneak into camp at night looking for treats. And rodents will chew holes in your backpack and tent corners if the smell treats.

Here’s a few tips to keep critters away from your food.

  • If there’s a bear box in your campsite, there’s a reason why it was placed there. Bear boxes are a great deterrent to aggressive desert wildlife beyond bears, such as the javelina and coyote.
  • Reusable odor proof storage bags for toiletries and food items reduces your risk significantly.
  • Odor proof coolers are available at a variety of price ranges.
  • Store coolers out of site. As crazy as it sounds, animals who learn to search for food in campsites also learn what a cooler looks like. If possible put your cooler in your vehicle and cover with a blanket so they can’t see it.
  • Stainless-steel mesh bags will keep rodents from chewing through your food bag. These also keep larger animals from eating your food, but make sure you secure your bag so they don’t carry it away.
  • Keep a clean camp. Wipe down tables, pick up dropped food and dispose of dishwashing water well away from your camp.

12 Cooking in the Desert at a Desert Camp Site

Bring a stove for cooking.

It’s most likely that you will not be allowed an open fire when camping in the desert. We think of the desert as a dry desolate place so it can be hard to image a raging wildfire. According to wildfire specialist Molly Hunter at the University of Arizona: wildfires are common in the desert. During the rainy season grasses and brush flourish. Then that foliage dries out creating fuel for fires. Throw in high winds in the spring and a fire can destroy land for miles.

13 Plan Mini Meals When Desert Camping

Desert heat can suppress your desire for food. While that might sound like an interesting diet opportunity, not eating in the desert is dangerous. You burn more calories when it’s hot. Dr. John Higgins of the University of Texas Medical School says that’s because your heart is working harder to support your cardiovascular system. To stay healthy you need to eat more calories in the desert.

Eating many mini meals keeps your energy level even throughout the day. Your body will enjoy those small treats without feeling sluggish or repulsed by food.

14 Put a Reflective Tarp over Your Cooler

Even the best cooler can’t compete against the desert sun. We found putting an insulating blanket over the cooler and then topping that with a reflective tarp improved the life of our cooler.

15 Bring More Water than You Can Ever Imagine Needing

You’ll read a lot of articles that say drink 1 gallon of water per day when in the desert. But really that’s just a guess. How much water you need to stay hydrated depends upon your own metabolism, the level of heat and how much effort your are putting out. There is no magic formula.

That said, when planning your water for camping in the desert 1 gallon per day per person is a good place to start. Then double that number. Then you’ll have what you need for cooking, for strenuous hikes, for cooling down if you overheat, etc.

16 Carry Water with You Anytime you Leave Camp

NEVER leave camp without water. Even if you are only planning to walk a short distance to check out “that thing” you saw. Dehydration in the desert kills. You never know when that short walk will turn into something more. Just grab a water bottle!

17 Know Where to Get More Water

Before you head out on a desert camping trip, take a minute to research where you can restock on water in an emergency. Packing more water than you can possibly imagine ever needing doesn’t mean something can’t go wrong.

We never pass up an opportunity, like passing a ranger station, to refill our big water jugs. And it’s common for me to grab that one extra gallon of water in the grocery store just in case. I’d rather come home with full water jugs than run out.

We always have a reserve of water in our coolers. Rather than using gel freezer bags, I freeze large water jugs in advance and use those for cooler ice.

Also remember desert creeks and streams that are shown on maps will probably be dry. So research rivers to determine if they usually have water all year.

Pack Essential Camping and Hiking Gear

18 carry a navigation device and a plb when backpacking.

Pretty quickly, everything starts to look the same when hiking in the heat of the desert. Rain and wind can quickly obscure a trail. And if you wander off trail there are no clear markers to find it again. So don’t leave camp without a navigation device. And even better, take safety another step and pack a Personal Locator Beacon. The last place you want to be lost and unfindable is in the desert.

19 Pack Extra Batteries or Charger for Your Flashlight

You’re often a long way from any electricity source or store when camping in the desert. Make sure you have extra flashlights, batteries or a remote charger. We prefer to take long life rechargeable flashlights for hiking .

20 Bring a Good Multitool

Something always needs to be fixed when you camping. The only difference with camping in the desert is you are usually far away from everywhere. A great multitool, like a high quality Leatherman , will perform a variety of functions for you while taking up very little space. Check out our guide to the Best Camping Multitools.

21 Bring a Tent and Sleeping Bag Repair Kit

The best way to keep little critters and bugs out of your tent or sleeping bag is to keep it secure. Be ready to patch up your tent or sleeping bag if it gets a little tear.

Avoid Desert House Guests: Scorpions, Snakes and Other Critters of the Desert

22 check your tent, sleeping bag and shoes for little critters.

Maybe I’ve watched too many old westerns, but one of my desert camping fears is to find a rattlesnake in my sleeping bag. So before I go to bed each night I turn the bag inside out to check for any uninvited guests.

I may be a little paranoid, but it really is a good practice to check your tent, sleeping bag and shoes for little critters. Also keeping a clean tent space avoids places critters can easily hide also helps. Most important, keep your tent zipped up at all times so no one wanders in.

23 Store Food where animals can’t reach

I feel like this is so obvious, but them I’m amazed every time I see campers with coolers and food bags just laying around camp. Could you possibly advertise more to all the critters in the desert that you have a buffet waiting for them?

24 Pack out or bury your Poop

Human waste is just as attractive to wildlife as your food. Bring a folding shovel or hiking trowel so you can bury your waste at least 200 feet from your campsite in a whole that is 6 to 8 inches deep. Even better, pack it out with you!

Be Aware of the Weather When Camping in the Desert

25 check the weather report for rain and flash flooding alerts.

We talked a little about this when selecting your campsite. Don’t’ underestimate the danger of flash floods on your hiking plans for the day.

26 Also Watch for Forecasted High Winds and Sand Storms

Sand storms are hard on your body and on your camping equipment. If you see a forecast of high winds, batten down all your gear.

27 Be Prepared for Cold Temps at Night

Night temperatures in the desert can drop significantly. According to NASA Earth Observatory , “The temperature in the desert can change drastically from day to night because the air is so dry that heat escapes rapidly at night.” Additionally sand doesn’t hold heat, it only reflects the sun’s heat during the day. So once the sun is gone the ground cools quickly.

How much the temperature drops depends on a lot of environmental factors but on any one day it can be anywhere between 25 to 60 degree drop. So imagine you are hiking in 95 degree heat all day and then while you are sleeping the temperature drops to 45 degrees.  Check our our guide to How to Keep Warm in a Tent for more ideas.

28 Know the Expected Extreme Hot Temps

There’s hot and then there’s beyond hot. Even in the desert there are days that get hotter than normal. If you watch the weather forecast you can plan your activities around those days. That super hot day might be a good time to explore a river hike or to head into town for supplies.

29 Limit Your Mid-Day activities

The sun between 10 and 2 is intense in the desert. If you are visiting a National Park or camping near a community, early afternoon is a great time to explore museums or go out for a long lunch.  Plan your outdoor activities, like hikes, for early in the morning or late in the afternoon. And, if you are backpacking, find shade or put up a tarp and use the mid afternoon for a quick nap.

Take Care of Your Body in the Desert

30 pack plenty of sun screen.

This should go without saying, but someone always forgets their sunscreen. It’s the reflection of the sun off the sand that catches people unaware. The sand magnifies the intensity of the sun’s UV rays just like water.

31 Take a Hat Made for Hot Weather

As you’d expect, the best hat for the desert has a wide brim to protect your face and neck. However what makes it special is the venting to let heat escape.

32 Shop for UFP/SPF Clothing

Once crazy expensive, you can now find UFP/SPF clothing for hiking at very reasonable prices. These fabrics stop harmful rays from passing through to your skin.

33 Wear Long Sleeves

Surprisingly covering your arms with light colored loose sleeves will keep you cooler than bare arms. The fabric not only protects from sunburn, it will reflect the sun and keep your skin from overheating. Just make sure you wear a breathable fabric so you are not holding in heat and sweat.

Personally I like layering a loose white UFP shirt over a tank top when hiking in the desert. Then if we find shade, I can take the outer shirt off for more cooling.

34 Wear Boots (not sandals)

You need good foot support in the desert because sandy ground shifts, causing your foot to twist and turn as you walk. Good support will minimize that action and keep your feet and ankles healthy. Boots will maximize support.

However, I will confess that I prefer a good pair of hiking shoes over boots even in the desert. The only real downside is that I get a lot more sand in my shoes than you would with the higher ankle coverage of boots.

If you want sandals to wear around camp, look for good hiking sandals, like TEVAS that will provide support.

35 Pack Baby Wipes to Wash Away Desert Sand

Somehow sand manages to get into every crack and crevice of your body when you are camping in the desert. Your most private body parts will really appreciate a wipe down before you go to bed at night.

Your Desert First Aid Kit

36 plan for dry sinus relief.

Dry air is hard on your sinus. Carrying an inexpensive bottle of nasal saline spray has been a life saver for me many times, giving relief from that dry sinus pain. Also pack allergy medication for relief if your sinus get inflamed.

37 Protect Your Eyes

Obviously you need a good pair of sunglasses in the desert. But consider a pair that wrap around and protect your peripheral vision also. That sun is intense and you’ll be surprised how much pours in from the side.

Saline drops for your eyes are also a critical piece of my gear. When we were sledding in White Sands National Park , the high winds blew that fine sand right under my sunglasses. My eyes hurt so much from all the fine sand particles that I could hardly see. A few saline drops and you’ll be back in business.

38 Pack Insect Repellant and Bite Care

Yes, mosquitoes live in the desert. Their little eggs are quite hardy and are buried in sandy dry washes waiting for the next rain. Biting sand flies are among the many other small insects that can bite you while camping in the desert. So don’t forget your insect repellant and something to soothe bites.

We have a detailed guide on keeping mosquitoes away while camping that will help you avoid those nasty critters.

39 Don’t forget your Basic First Aid Kit

Of course, don’t forget your regular first aid kit for hiking and camping. You never know when you need a bandage, will get a nasty blister, or wake up with a raging headache.

Heat Stroke, Cramps and Exhaustion and Dehydration

40 know the signs of heat stroke when hiking in the desert.

When your body’s natural cooling system fails, you can become seriously ill and perhaps die.

Listen to your body and know the signs that heat stroke is coming on before it gets serious. For me, I start to feel lightheaded and a bit disoriented. If I stop right then and take cooling action I can recover quickly. The worse thing to do is to try to “push through it”.

Here’s a great resource from John Hopkins to help you learn the signs.

41 Know What to Do if You Overheat

It’s important to take actions that will cool your body as quickly as possible. Obviously move to shade if possible. Cool down by placing a wet cooling towel, bandana or even a shirt around your neck. Apply cold water to your wrists, armpits and groin.

42 Learn How to Avoid Overheating in the Desert

Here’s a few tip to avoid

  • If you aren’t used to hot weather, take a few days to acclimatize your body to the hotter temperatures before you start your camping trip.
  • Carry a wet bandana or towel in your backpack if you go hiking so you can wrap around your neck in the heat of the day.
  • Take the lead of Southwestern US natives and enjoy that afternoon nap avoiding the heat of the day.
  • Drink water slowly throughout the day.

43 Travel with a Buddy

Heat stroke can sneak up on you and be completely debilitating. Traveling with a buddy means someone has your back in an emergency.

Camping in the Desert Requires Extra Care of Your Electronics

44 use solar power to recharge.

When you have all the sun you could ever want, go solar! Little solar packs are incredibly successful in the desert.

45 Protect your Electronics from Sand and Dust

Just as sand and dust work their way into your body crevices, it does the same with your electronics. When not in use, tuck your electronics into your bag or tent to minimize the damage those tiny sand particles can do.

Before You Go – Is your Vehicle Ready for the Desert?

46 get a vehicle check up before camping in the desert.

I’m sure you’ve heard the horror tales of someone’s car overheating on a desert road and no one drove by for hours to help. Don’t let that be you. Have your vehicle or camper checked out before you go.

47 Carry Tools, Coolant and Oil for Your Vehicle

Even if you are not mechanically inclined, you can add coolant to an overheated engine. And even if you have no skill, the next car that stops might have a passenger that knows how to help you. Bring the basics with you.

48 Check Your Spare Tire

Take a few seconds and check the air pressure in your spare tire before you head out to the desert. If it’s low, get that tire checked out too. Dark, desert highways are not the place to wait for road side assistance to drive a 100 miles to help you. That is assuming you have cell service to call them.

49 Fill er up

Rule of thumb is never let your gas gauge go under ½ tank. Gas stations can be very far apart in desert country. If you are planning an extended desert road trip you might want to carry an extra gas tank for back up.

Bonus Tip: Bring a Novel Set in a National Park

When trying to beat the afternoon heat, grab a book that is set in a National Park . Relax and explore virtually!

The first major attraction, however, that travelers can engage in is camel riding. Travelers are first taken to the traditional camel at the start of their journey where one can spot the camels up close.

Convenience is taken care of in this case as visitors don't have to face any hassles and are dropped back to the hotel.

Luxury Desert Tours from Fes

Unforgettable desert trips from fes to erg chebbi.

Our desert excursions from Fes are the perfect way to explore Southern Morocco’s spectacular landscapes.

All our itineraries starting in Fes visit Erg Chebbi as it is the closest of our camps to Morocco’s second-largest city.

It’s a long drive from Fes to Merzouga, so we break our journey up with fun and fascinating stops at Ifrane, Mldelt, and Erfoud.

The changing scenery along the way is truly breathtaking. This is, without a doubt, one of our favorite drives in Morocco.

And, of course, the highlight of our desert tours from Fes is Erg Chebbi itself.

Here, you can see the awe-inspiring amount of stars twinkling over the desert at night, take a camel ride, see a desert oasis at Draa Valley, and more.

Our desert trips from Fes finish in Marrakech, so you can also experience Ait Ben Haddou, Agdz, and Nekob, as well as the Middle Atlas and High Atlas Mountains.

Browse our itineraries below to see which tour best suits your needs. And if you have any questions for us, please feel free to get in touch .

We can also run trips in reverse if you prefer. Check out our desert tours from Marrakech to find out more.
