New Shows & Movies To Watch This Weekend: 'Mary & George' on Starz + More

R.i.p. kenneth mitchell: 'star trek: discovery' and 'captain marvel' star dead at 49, stream it or skip it: ‘star trek: lower decks’ season 4 on paramount+, featuring the continuing (mis)adventures of starfleet’s proudest platoon members, best star trek gifts for trekkie fans in 2024.

In the grand Star Trek tradition, CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery has introduced us to Starfleet officers that we absolutely love. The series, now in its pulse-pounding second season, has started to really dig into the interpersonal relationships that really make this franchise special. Saru and Burnham’s deep trust, the sweeping romance of Paul and Hugh , Stamets and Tilly’s unlikely mentor/mentee dynamic, Pike’s everything –all of it’s just great, and it’s why we stick with Star Trek decade after decade!

But unlike every other Star Trek show, Discovery’s cast is a bit more… fractured, is a word to use. Star Trek (or TOS ) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (or TNG ) both had casts led by a dynamic captain with a crew backing them up. That’s not the case with Discovery , the first Star Trek show to not focus on a Starfleet captain. Beyond that, a lot of the characters have gotten promotions or changed roles, or they’re part of departments we rarely see highlighted on Trek shows (WTF are you doing, Stamets?). The actual bridge crew, the officers that do essential things like handle operations or pilot the ship, are mostly on the periphery! Who are they, and who does what?

That’s what this list hopes to suss out. Below you’ll find a list of all the major Star Trek officer positions, who fulfilled those roles on TOS and TNG , and who does the job on the currently-airing Discovery ( DIS ). As you’ll find out, a whole lot has changed regarding how Starfleet staffs a ship.

Commanding Officer

star-trek-commanding-officer

  • TOS: James T. Kirk
  • TNG: Jean-Luc Picard
  • DIS: Gabriel Lorca (deceased), Christopher Pike (active)

Of all the positions in Star Trek , this is the one that’s always easiest to identify. Which character is top-billed and gets all the action? That’s the captain, like Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). Leave it to Discovery to complicate matters, though, because “top-billed” and “gets all the action” actually describes Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green, who is not the captain! Initially, the USS Discovery was captained by Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) until he was outed as an evil citizen of the Mirror Universe at the end of Season 1. Then Saru (Doug Jones) took over as acting captain until the arrival of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) in Season 2.

First Officer

star-trek-first-officer

  • TNG: William Riker

It’s the first officer’s job to make sure that the crew carries out all of the commanding officer’s orders, and he also takes an active role in leading away teams while the captain remains on ship. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) pulled double duty as the first officer and the science officer. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was Picard’s number one. Saru started out as the chief science officer of the USS Shenzhou and became the first officer of Discovery , a role he still fulfills today.

Chief Engineer

star-trek-engineer

  • TOS: Montgomery Scott
  • TNG: Geordi La Forge
  • DIS: Jett Reno

It’s the chief engineering officer’s job to make sure the ship runs smoothly, and you usually see them away from the main bridge and down in the bowels of the vessel. This is what Scotty (James Doohan) did on the first series, and it’s the role Geordi (LeVar Burton) took on in Next Gen after spending the first season as the helmsman. As for who acts as the chief engineer on Discovery , well, that’s confusing. You’d think that job would fall to Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), but his job is more specific than that (more on him later). There is an engineer on board Discovery as of Season 2, though, and that’s Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), survivor of the USS Hiawatha disaster and new (although rarely seen) addition to the Discovery crew.

Science Officer

star-trek-science-officer

  • DIS: Michael Burnham

On a vessel tasked with exploring the far reaches of space, you need someone with a science background on board to help make sense of new alien worlds and species. Spock fulfilled that role while serving as Kirk’s number one. By the time of Next Generation , science officers had become less common on Starfleet vessels. Still, science officer duties sometimes fell to Data (Brent Spiner). On Discovery , Michael Burnham–you know, the show’s lead character–is actually the science officer. There’s also another science officer on board: the scene-stealing Linus !

Chief Medical Officer

star-trek-medical-officer

  • TOS: Leonard McCoy
  • TNG: Beverly Crusher, Katherine Pulaski
  • DIS: Hugh Culber, Tracy Pollard

This job really needs no further explanation past the title, does it? These people keep the rest of the crew alive. That’s what Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) did in the original series and it’s what Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) did a generation later (there’s also Pulaski , but Trek fans don’t like talking about Pulaski). On Discovery , that job falls to Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) as well as Tracy Pollard , who filled in for Culber while he was, uh, dead-ish.

Communications Officer

star-trek-communications-officer

  • TOS: Nyota Uhura
  • TNG:  Pendleton
  • DIS: Milton Richter (former), R.A. Bryce (active)

The communications officer handles all transmissions incoming and outgoing, a gig that becomes stressful when you’re trying to communicate with potentially hostile entities. Uhura served as communications officer, playing an important role in pop culture. That’s why it’s kinda wild that TNG just didn’t have a communications officer, at least one that was onscreen. Geordi name drops a Chief Pendleton in one episode, but we never see him. The communications officer torch was picked up in Discovery Season 1 by Milton Richter , and then carried by R.A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.) in Season 2.

star-trek-helmsman

  • TOS: Hikaru Sulu
  • TNG: Geordi La Forge, Wesley Crusher, various
  • DIS: Keyla Detmer

When you get down to it, who has the most necessary job on a ship? The helmsman–you know, the person that actually flies the ship . Sulu (George Takei) flew the Enterprise through a bunch of missions in the first series. Geordi sat behind the “wheel” in the first season of TNG before moving to engineering. After that, a series of helmsmen took their turn, including Sariel Rager and Ro Laren . Oddly enough, the most notable TNG helmsman is probably teenager Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton). On Discovery , Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts) has served as the helmsman for both the USS Shenzhou and USS Discovery .

Tactical Officer/Security Chief

star-trek-security

  • TOS: Pavel Chekov
  • TNG: Natasha Yar (deceased), Worf
  • DIS: Ellen Landry (deceased), Ash Tyler (former), Nhan (active), Gen Rhys (active)

Over the course of canon, chief tactical officer and security chief have been combined into one role. Chekov (Walter Koenig) had the job, as did Worf (Michael Dorn). It’s also a dangerous job; TNG’s Tasha Yar and Discovery’s Ellen Landry both died while on the clock. Ash Tyler stepped into the role on Discovery until his true identity was uncovered. Now Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) has transferred over to Discovery from Enterprise and serves as security chief. Separate from the security chief, Gen Rhys acts as Discovery’s tactical officer.

Operations Officer

star-trek-operations-officer

  • DIS: Joann Owosekun

Data’s primary job on the USS Enterprise was as the operations officer, the man (or rather android) in charge of keeping track of the resources being allocated to all parts of the ship, from navigation to engineering. On Discovery , Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) keeps everything running smoothly.

Transporter Chief/Spore Stuff

star-trek-transporter

  • TNG: Miles O’Brien
  • DIS: Paul Stamets, Airiam

The transporter chief does exactly what you think they do: they control the super important transporter system. During the original series, that role fell under the umbrella of engineering, hence (the misquotation) “beam me up, Scotty.” Miles O’Brien (Colm Meaney) served as transporter chief on TNG before being promoted and moved to Deep Space 9 .

And then there’s Discovery , a show that doesn’t have a transporter chief (that we’ve met). It does, however, have a whole department devoted to the ship’s one-of-a-kind spore drive that allows the ship to essentially teleport long distances via the mycelial network. All that spore stuff is kind of a massive transporter, one that transports the whole ship. Stamets and Airiam (Sara Mitich S1; Hannah Cheesman S2) are in the very small spore department.

star-trek-ensign

  • TOS: Various
  • TNG: Wesley Crusher
  • DIS: Sylvia Tilly

Ensign is the rank usually assigned to officers fresh out of Starfleet Academy. At first, ensigns were mostly the redshirts that beamed down to alien planets just to die. For a long time, TNG’s Wesley Crusher was the most recognizable ensign in Trek canon, until Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) came along and started seeing action on a weekly basis (seriously, she does a lot for an ensign).

Full Cast of Star Trek Beyond - Every Actor & Character In the Movie

Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Chris Pine, Star Trek: Beyond logo

With the future of Star Tr e k ’s Kelvin Timeline reboot movies in a seemingly-continuous limbo, here’s a list of every character who appeared in the most recent entry from 2016: Star Trek Beyond .

Around the early-to-mid 2000s, the Star Trek franchise was stagnating. Following Enterprise ’s cancellation and the box-office bombing of Paramount’s then-newest Trek film, Star Trek: Nemesis , the studio decided it was time for a change.

A reboot was conceived under the leadership of J.J. Abrams who went on to direct two movies, 2009’s Star Trek and its 2013 sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness .

The third entry into this rebooted series, Star Trek Beyond , opened on July 22, 2016, to less-than-stellar financial results.

Every Character & Actor in Star Trek Beyond

Many fans argue that Star Trek Beyond is the strongest movie in the Kelvin Trilogy. It featured a quick-moving narrative, solid character beats, and even a Beastie Boys song or two.

Here are all the characters that had a part to play in the threequel and their corresponding actor.

Chris Pine - Captain James T. Kirk

Chris Pine, James Kirk, Star Trek Beyond

Chris Pine’s Jim Kirk opens the film feeling the weight of the mission. The USS Enterprise has been exploring deep space for two and a half years, and everything is starting to feel a bit rote for the Starfleet captain.

Little does he know that a trip beyond Starbase Yorktown will result in him and his crew getting way more than they bargained for.

Zachary Quinto - Commander Spock

Zachary Quinto, Spock, Star Trek Beyond

Everybody’s favorite half-human, half-Vulcan science officer returns, marking Zachary Quinto’s third time in Spock’s pointy ears.

Gravely injured during the first act and stranded on an uncharted planet with the rest of the Enterprise Crew, Spock must rely on the medical expertise of Dr. McCoy to survive.

Karl Urban - Dr. Leonard McCoy

Karl Urban, Leonard McCoy, Star Trek Beyond

Karl Urban returns as the irascible Dr. McCoy, who is teamed with Spock for much of the film as they try to find a way to reunite with the crew in between sarcastic zingers.

During the final conflict of the film, Bones and Mr. Spock man the controls of one of Krall’s drone ships to help take out the rest of the villain’s massive fleet.

Zoe Saldana - Lt. Nyota Uhura

Zoe Saldana, Nyota Uhura, Star Trek Beyond

The Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy superstar Zoe Saldana comes back for another round as Lt. Uhura, who begins the film on the outs with her boyfriend, Spock.

After the Enterprise is destroyed and the crew is taken prisoner, Uhura must fight for her life against Krall and his forces, patching things up with her Vulcan suitor in the process.

Simon Pegg - Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott

Simon Pegg, Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott, Star Trek Beyond

In Star Trek Beyond , Simon Pegg’s Scotty uses his engineering genius to escape the crumbling Enterprise in a photon torpedo tube.

Once on the surface of the planet Altamid, Scott meets a fellow strandee named Jaylah, and the two join forces to help get the wreck of the long-lost USS Franklin up and running again.

John Cho - Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu

John Cho, Hikaru Sulu, Star Trek Beyond

John Cho’s Lt. Sulu, the Enteprise ’s helmsman, shares the bulk of his screentime with Saldana’s Uhura as the two try and free themselves from their captivity.

Sulu gets to put his piloting skills to the test when he’s called upon to fly the outdated Franklin off of its resting place on Altamid.

Anton Yelchin - Ensign Pavel Chekov

Anton Yelchin, Pavel Chekov, Star Trek Beyond

By the time of Beyond , the wide-eyed whiz kid Chekov has developed into a highly competent Starfleet officer, who pairs up with Captain Kirk throughout the movie’s second act.

The film is dedicated to actor Anton Yelchin, who tragically lost his life in a freak accident shortly before the theatrical release. The cast has spoken on many an occasion about how difficult it would be to make a fourth movie without him.

Idris Elba - Captain Balthazar Edison/Krall

Idris Elba, Krall, Star Trek Beyond

An ex-MACO for the United Earth Military, Idris Elba’s Captain Edison fought in multiple conflicts with the Romulans as well as the Xindi.

But when the Federation was founded, his military skills and knowledge had no further use, and he felt abandoned by the very governing body he used to fight for.

When his ship, the USS Franklin, crash-landed on Altamid, Edison took control of the planet’s technology, becoming the devious and disfigured villain known as Krall.

Sofia Boutella - Jaylah

Sofia Boutella, Jaylah, Star Trek Beyond

Sofia Boutella’s Jaylah became marooned on Altamid as a young girl after her parents were killed by Krall.

In Beyond , Jaylah has taken up residence in the hull of the USS Franklin , a Federation vessel that went missing around the time of Captain Jonathan Archer’s missions in the mid-2100s.

Joe Taslim - Anderson Le/Manas

Joe Taslim, Manas, Star Trek Beyond

Joe Taslim plays Anderson Le, one of Edison’s crewmembers who was mutated into the evil Manas by Altamid’s energy transference tech.

Lydia Wilson - Jessica Wolff/Kalara

Lydia Wilson, Jessica Wolff, Kalara, Star Trek Beyond

Much like her crewmate Le, Lydia Wilson’s Jessica Wolff survived on Altamid by becoming Kalara and serving as one of Krall’s underlings.

Sara Maria Forsberg - Kalara’s Translated Voice

Sara Maria Forsberg

Upon arriving in Yorktown to lure the Enterprise into Krall’s trap, Kalara is fitted with a universal translator collar which converts her alien speech into something more understandable. Sara Maria Forsberg provides the voice of the universal translator.

Deep Roy - Keenser

Deep Roy, Keenser, Star Trek Beyond

Deep Roy plays Scotty’s pal and fellow engineer Keenser in all three Kelvin timeline films. In Beyond , a caustic sneeze from Keenser helps the crew melt a lock to get out of a jam.

Melissa Roxburgh - Ensign Syl

Melissa Roxburgh, Ensign Syl, Star Trek Beyond

An Enterprise crewperson, Melissa Roxburgh’s Syl hides a deadly weapon called the Arbonath in her cranial cavity thanks to some quick thinking on the part of Jim Kirk.

Shohreh Aghdashloo - Commodore Paris

Shohreh Aghdashloo, Commodore Paris, Star Trek Beyond

The commanding officer of StarBase Yorktown, Shohreh Aghdashloo‘s Paris was actually added to the movie during reshoots. Some fans have also theorized that she’s an ancestor of Tom Paris from Star Trek: Voyager .

Greg Grunberg - Commander Finnegan

Greg Grunberg, Commander Finnegan, Star Trek Beyond

Greg Grunburg, a longtime staple of J.J. Abrams-affiliated productions, plays Finnegan, an officer stationed in Yorktown’s command center. Fun fact: Finnegan is the alternate reality version of the character by the same name from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Shore Leave."

Danny Pudi - Fi’Ja

Danny Pudi, Fi'Ja, Star Trek Beyond

Community ’s Danny Pudi makes a cool (cool, cool, cool) cameo as Fi’Ja, a would-be assailant of Scotty’s who is put down by Jaylah.

Kim Kold - Zavanko

Kim Kold, Zavanko, Star Trek Beyond

Savanko, another alien who tries to attack Mr. Scott on Altamid, is played by Danish bodybuilder Kim Kold.

Fraser Aitcheson - Hider

Fraser Aitcheson, Hider, Star Trek Beyond

Fraser Aitcheson plays Hider, the third alien who comes after Scotty and is quickly dispatched by Jaylah.

Douglas Chapman - Sir Olden

Douglas Chapman, Sir Olden, Star Trek Beyond

Sir Olden, a Starfleet science officer portrayed by Douglas Chapman, is on the Enterprise when it’s brought down by Krall’s swarm ships.

Anita Brown - Tyvanna

Anita Brown, Tyvanna, Star Trek Beyond

One of the Enterprise ’s bridge officers, Anita Brown’s Tyvanna evacuated the ship once it was attacked.

Doug Jung - Ben

Doug Jung

Doug Jung wrote Star Trek Beyond ’s screenplay alongside Simon Pegg. He also made a brief appearance in the movie as Ben, Lt. Sulu’s husband.

Dan Payne - Wadjet

Dan Payne, Wadjet, Star Trek Beyond

A red-shirted Enterprise operations officer, Wadjet, was portrayed by Dan Payne.

Shea Whigham - Teenaxi Leader

Shea Whigham, Teenaxi Leader, Star Trek Beyond

Boardwalk Empire ’s Shea Whigam lent his voice to the Teenaxian who appeared in Star Trek Beyond ’s opening scene

Jeff Bezos - Alien Starfleet Official

Jeff Bezos, Alien Starfleet Official, Star Trek Beyond

Jeff Bezos (yeah, that Jeff Bezos) made an easy-to-miss cameo under heavy alien makeup as a Starfleet officer.

Carlo Ancelotti - Yorktown Doctor

Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian football manager, also made a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance as a doctor on Starbase Yorktown. He reportedly got the role because he’s friends with Zoe Saldana.

Will Star Trek Beyond Get a Sequel?

Ever since Beyond was released in cinemas in 2016, various attempts at making another sequel have been announced and subsequently shelved.

As the main cast members are typically quite busy, it would be something of a Herculean task to get all their schedules aligned so that they could work on a fourth Kelvin timeline film.

Anything’s possible, however, with Paramount's top brass claiming that they wish to move the Star Trek franchise back into features alongside its healthy TV presence.

Star Trek Beyond is available for purchase where ever movies are sold.

He was 79Obit Rene Auberjonois, Los Angeles, USA - 09 Nov 2013

René Auberjonois, best known for his roles in “ Boston Legal ” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” died at his home in Los Angeles due to metastatic lung cancer. He was 79.

His son Rèmy-Luc confirmed the news to the Associated Press .

Auberjonois was a prolific television actor, appearing as Paul Lewiston in 71 episodes of “Boston Legal” and as Clayton Runnymede Endicott III in ABC’s long-running sitcom “ Benson ” — a role that earned him an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a comedy in 1984. He played shape-shifter Changeling Odo in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and carried that role into video games, voicing Odo in “Harbinger” and “The Fallen.” His appearance as Judge Mantz in ABC’s “The Practice” earned him another Emmy nod for guest actor in a drama in 2001.

His guest roles were numerous, appearing on classics like “Murder, She Wrote,” “The Jeffersons,” “The Outer Limits,” “L.A. Law,” “Stargate SG-1,” “Frasier,” and the more recent hit “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

His first film role came with “MASH,” in which he played Father Mulcahy in the first of several collaborations with Robert Altman. He would go on appear in Altman’s revisionist Western classic “McCabe & Mrs. Miller,” “Brewster McCloud,” and “Images.” Other film credits include Roy Bagley in 1976’s “King Kong” and Reverend Oliver in “The Patriot,” as well as parts in “Batman Forever,” “Eyes of Laura Mars” and “Walker.”

Before his entry into Hollywood, Auberjonois worked in theater, earning a Tony for best lead actor in a musical for his role opposite Katharine Hepburn in “Coco.” He received further Tony nominations for 1973’s “The Good Doctor,” 1984’s “Big River,” and 1989’s “City of Angels.”

Auberjonois was also known for his voice roles, particularly in 1989’s Disney Renaissance hit “The Little Mermaid,” in which he voices Chef Louis and sang the memorable “Les Poissons.” Fans of “The Princess Diaries” would recognize him as the voice of Mia Thermopolis’ father, Prince Philippe Renaldi, in an uncredited role.

In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, writer Judith Auberjonois; sisters Marie-Laure Degener and Anne Auberjonois; daughter Tessa Auberjonois; son-in-law Adrian Latourelle, daughter-in-law Kate Nowlin and three grandchildren.

He was remembered on social media by his “Deep Space Nine” co-star Armin Shimerman, who played Quark.

“His last message to me was entitled ‘Don’t forget…’ I know that I, Kitty and all that knew him will never forget. The world seems noticeably emptier now. I loved him.”

15 Star Trek Actors Who Died In 2019

Gone but not forgotten.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Odo

Star Trek is a pop-culture phenomenon virtually unmatched in its magnitude, and across both 13 movies and seven major TV shows spanning more than five decades, literally thousands of actors have lent their talents to this gigantic sci-fi tapestry.

The inevitable truth with so many people coming and going over so many years, of course, is that rarely more than a few weeks go by without a recognisable name or face passing away, and 2019 was an especially tough year for Trek fans.

Over the last 12 months, the Star Trek family lost a number of actors responsible for some of the most iconic and beloved characters in the series' history, not to mention character actors and before-they-were-famous industry legends who stopped by for memorable one-off appearances.

Star Trek has offered up many unforgettable ruminations on the meaning of death over the decades, but it hurts no less knowing that so many talented performers are sadly no longer with us...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek Kirk

Gene Roddenberry's celebrated sci-fi TV series "Star Trek" debuted on September 8, 1966, and it recently celebrated its 57th anniversary. Initially, "Trek" wasn't terribly popular, and it only managed to make a third season thanks to a coordinated letter-writing campaign (a campaign that Roddenberry was accused of orchestrating and encouraging himself). It wouldn't be until after "Star Trek" was canceled in 1969 that its popularity would significantly begin to grow.

Thanks to a sweet infinite syndication deal, "Star Trek" reruns were common, and a cult began to form. By the early 1970s, the first "Trek" conventions began to appear. Naturally, conventions were a great place for the show's stars and creators to congregate and share production stories with a rising tide of obsessives. Fans were able to talk to and get autographs from William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Majel Barrett, Walter Koenig, George Takei, James Doohan, and Grace Lee Whitney, as well as many of the show's more supporting players.

Many decades have passed, but the surviving "Star Trek" cast members, now in their 80s and 90s, still appear at conventions to share details of their now-long and storied careers. Over 57 years ago, they were at the start of a phenomenon; none of them could have likely predicted just what a massive impact "Star Trek" would have on the pop culture landscape. Three members of the original "Star Trek" cast appeared at Creation Entertainment's 57-Year Mission convention in Las Vegas, and one of them is already confirmed for the 2024 con  next August.

If you're eager to get an autograph or merely to hear an amusing anecdote from across many decades of interaction with the "Trek" franchise at large, the following surviving actors will still happily oblige.

William Shatner

In March of 2023, Shatner, who played the resolute Captain Kirk on "Star Trek," turned 92, yet he still makes convention appearances. Stories have been told throughout Trekkie-dom that Shatner can occasionally be spiky at cons, but has clearly embraced them, even going so far as to say that fans are the future  of anything so deeply beloved as "Star Trek." Indeed, in many cases, fans care more about carrying on the legacy of a show than the studios; in many ways, Trekkies take the show more seriously than the people who make it.

Shatner has, of course, had a textured career. Some of his earlier films include adaptations of "The Brothers Karamozov" (in which he played Alexey) and "Oedipus the King" (in which he played a masked member of the chorus), as well as genre films like "The Intruder" and "Incubus." Although Shatner is best known for "Trek" — a common side-effect for most any actor who appeared on any "Star Trek" show — he forged an interesting acting career beyond ii. He appeared in the hit cop show "T.J. Hooker," and appeared in spoof films like "Airplane II: The Sequel" and "National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1." He released several notorious albums of speak-singing, and directed several documentaries about "Star Trek," including "The Captains" and "Chaos on the Bridge."

Shatner also authored several "Star Trek" novels and even launched his own modestly successful sci-fi book series with "TekWar" (ghost-written by Ron Goulart) in 1989. He won two Emmys in 2004 and 2005 for his role as Denny Crane in "The Practice" and "Boston Legal." He's also an equestrian enthusiast and has won a few horseback riding awards. Shatner is spry for 92.

George Takei

In 2019, George Takei , who played the practical and intelligent Hikaru Sulu on "Star Trek," authored a graphic novel all about his childhood experiences of being rounded up and imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Takei was born in Los Angeles in 1937 (he's the only main cast member from the original show who is an L.A. native), and recalls being held against his will by the U.S. government as a child. It may have been that experience that made Takei as political as he is. In the early 1970s, after "Star Trek," Takei ran for a set on the Los Angeles City Council, and served as an alternate delegate at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. At conventions, Takei has spoken at length about his beliefs in civic infrastructure, encouraging L.A. to improve its long-beleaguered public transportation.

Takei came out as gay in 2005, revealing that he had been with his long-term partner, Brad Altman, for the last 18 years. He and Altman married in 2008, one of the first same-sex couples to be granted a marriage license in West Hollywood, California. Takei has been an outspoken queer rights activist ever since, raising money for charities and speaking at charity events regularly. He makes appearances at fan conventions on the regular.

As an actor, Takei began reading English-language dubs for imported Toho monster movies prior to "Star Trek." He also starred in movies like "The Green Berets" and "Mulan." On TV, Takei guest-starred on many, many programs, including a notable regular role on the hit show "Heroes." His deep voice also afforded him an opportunity to regularly contribute to dozens of animated programs, most recently in Max's "Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai."

Walter Koenig

There were rumors circulating through the Trekkie community for years that Walter Koenig was hired to appear on the second season of "Star Trek" because the then-30-year-old actor looked an awful lot like Davy Jones from "The Monkees." This wasn't the case, but Koenig provided a youthful, heartthrob quality with his character, Pavel Chekov. His character was Russian, a notable character decision to make in the mid-1960s as the U.S. was still embroiled deeply in the Cold War. Chekov was a symbol that peace would eventually come. Koenig was never anything less than 100% committed, and reacted to extreme sci-fi scenarios with fire and aplomb.

In the early '60s, the actor worked his way through smaller roles in multiple well-known TV series like "Mr. Novak," "Gidget," and "I Spy" before joining "Star Trek" in its second season. After, he continued apace, working on TV regularly, eventually landing a recurring role on a second beloved sci-fi series  "Babylon 5." He has also stayed a part of "Star Trek" up until the present, having provided a voice cameo in the most recent season of "Star Trek: Picard," as well as reprising his role as Chekov in the semi-professional and well-respected fan series "Star Trek: New Voyages." He's also dabbled in many amusing B-movies like "Mad Cowgirl" and "Scream of the Bikini," as well as animated shows like "Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters."

Additionally, Koenig has served as an advocate for civil rights in Burma, having visited refugee camps there. Koenig still appears at conventions, happy to talk about his various projects and acting endeavors. Just please, whatever you do, don't ask him to say "nuclear wessels." The man just turned 87. He deserves a break from that.

Every Star Trek Actor In 1980s & Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone

  • Star Trek and The Twilight Zone share a lot of actors, with many appearing in both series throughout their long runs.
  • The recent revival of The Twilight Zone, narrated by Jordan Peele, captures the haunting essence of the original with its atmospheric storytelling.
  • Actors from Star Trek, including Nana Visitor, Ethan Phillips, Jonathan Frakes, Tim Russ, John deLancie, Brent Spiner, Tawny Newsome, Paul F. Tompkins, Robert Duncan McNeill, Terry Farrell, and John Cho, have also made appearances in The Twilight Zone, showcasing their versatility.

Star Trek and The Twilight Zone have had a lot in common over their long runs, including a lot of actors who appeared in both series. Many Star Trek: The Original Series actors were in The Twilight Zone 's original version , which ran from 1959 to 1964. The Twilight Zone 's first revival overlapped with Star Trek: The Next Generation for two years with a 1985 to 1989 run, and featured several actors who would go on to be main cast members in TNG , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager . Its hour-long episodes were broken into segments, allowing for the short-form storytelling that made the original The Twilight Zone so powerful.

Jordan Peele's The Twilight Zone premiered as a CBS All Access original in 2019, just two years after Star Trek: Discovery made its debut on the same streaming service, now rebranded as Paramount+. This 21st-century revival of the classic anthology is haunting and atmospheric, with long, lingering shots that heighten each episode's sense of uncertainty. Peele takes the reins as the series' narrator, weaving his progressive viewpoint through the individual stories in much the same way The Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling did. This Twilight Zone lasted only 2 seasons, but also included Star Trek actors like its predecessors .

12 Star Trek Actors Who Appeared On The X-Files

Nana visitor (col. kira nerys), the twilight zone (1985) season 1, episode 9a "dead woman's shoes".

In this remake of the original The Twilight Zone episode "Dead Man's Shoes", Nana Visitor plays Lori, secretary to a widower whose dead wife strides back into his life through an old pair of shoes. Visitor's part is relatively small, but she's recognizable as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's future Major Kira Nerys , with a similar short hairstyle.

Ethan Phillips (Neelix)

The twilight zone (1985) season 1, episode 22b "devil's alphabet".

Best known to Star Trek: Voyager fans as the Talaxian Neelix , Ethan Phillips appears in The Twilight Zone as a member of the Devil's Alphabet Society, a secret fraternal order in the 1780s that makes a pact to meet annually, regardless of however many of their members may or may not be alive. Naturally, such an oath portends one less member around the table each year, but whether the pact itself is the cause of the society members' death remains a mystery, even as ghostly specters begin to appear at the meetings. Phillips' bespectacled brother shares a certain nervous demeanor with Neelix, but the similarities end there.

Jonathan Frakes (Captain William Riker)

The twilight zone (1985) season 1, episode 13b "but can she type".

Karen Billings (Pam Dawber), a secretary frustrated with being demeaned in her workplace, finds a magical copy machine that sends her to a parallel dimension where secretaries are treated like celebrities. Jonathan Frakes plays a man at the bar who's suitably impressed with Karen's career choice, and very interested in asking her out, thanks to her prestigious job. It's not a far stretch for the man who would become Captain William Riker , with his charming smile and progressive appreciation of women.

Tim Russ (Lt. Tuvok)

The twilight zone (1985) season 1, episode 3c "kentucky rye" and season 2, episode 13 "voices in the earth".

Star Trek: Voyager 's Tuvok , Tim Russ, makes two appearances in The Twilight Zone , first as a police officer with a single line at the close of season 1's "Kentucky Rye", then in season 2's "Voices in the Earth". A far-future starship closes in on a forgotten planet seeking valuable resources, with Russ' crew member -- interestingly named Archer -- providing commentary on the planet's history and sensor readings. Russ only appears in a few scenes, but the episode's references to warp travel and subspace, and message that all life is worthy of respect, no matter what form it takes, make it an episode of The Twilight Zone clearly inspired by Star Trek .

Strange New Worlds' Season 1 Finale Subtly Shouts Out Another Sci-Fi Franchise

John delancie (q) & brent spiner (lt. commander data), the twilight zone (1985) season 1, episode 19b "dead run".

"Dead Run" imagines the afterlife as a corporation, with John deLancie as an executive within its ranks who's responsible for determining where souls eventually end up. It plays out sort of like Q paying his dues as middle management in the Q Continuum before showing up on the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation. If Q's statements in TNG season 6, episode 15 "Tapestry" are anything to go by, that just might be the case. Brent Spiner has a smaller role as a deceased draft dodger proclaiming his innocence on the road to hell. His face is obscured when he first appears, but Spiner's voice here is awfully close to Data's when trying to tell jokes on the holodeck.

Tawny Newsome (Lt. Beckett Mariner) & Paul F. Tompkins (Dr. Migleemo)

The twilight zone (2019) season 2, episode 4 "ovation".

In The Twilight Zone (2019) season 2, episode 4 "Ovation", aspiring singer Jasmine Delancey (Jurnee Smollett) receives a cursed coin that brings her fame, but at a cost. Star Trek: Lower Decks' Tawny Newsome plays Jasmine's sister Zara, a medical doctor who supports Jasmine financially. Zara's fluctuation between enthusiasm for and criticism of her sister's musical career echoes Lt. Beckett Mariner's conflicted feelings about Starfleet in Lower Decks, though Newsome's Twilight Zone performance is much subtler . Paul F. Tompkins appears briefly, but with characteristic gusto, as late night talk show host and Jasmine superfan Jimmy O'Malley.

Tawny Newsome & Paul F. Tompkins appear together again as hosts of the official Star Trek podcast, The Pod Directive .

Robert Duncan McNeill (Lt. Tom Paris) & James Cromwell (Zefram Cochrane)

The twilight zone (1985) season 1, episode 6b "a message from charity".

Robert Duncan McNeill stars in "A Message from Charity" as Peter Wood, a lonely 1980s teenager who becomes psychically connected to a Puritan girl named Charity (Kerry Noonan) as both come down with a similar fever. Through the bond, the pair learn about each other's worlds and become friends, despite the 200-year separation between the two. In Star Trek: Voyager, McNeill's Tom Paris also has a fascination with history that earns him a 20th century friend in Rain Robinson (Sarah Silverman). Long before Star Trek: First Contact , James Cromwell features as Charity's father, Obadiah Payne, who defends Charity when she's accused of witchcraft.

McNeill is credited as "Duncan McNeil" (sic) in his Twilight Zone appearance because there was already a "Robert McNeill" in the Screen Actors Guild, which doesn't allow duplicate names.

Terry Farrell (Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax)

The twilight zone (1985) season 2, episode 4a "the after hours".

In another remake of a classic Twilight Zone episode, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Jadzia Dax actor, Terry Farrell, stars as Marcia, a woman compelled to visit the mall after it's closed. When questioned by a mall employee, Marcia can't remember anything about her life prior to one month earlier, and the mall's mannequins seem to follow her, calling her name as she runs from store to store with increasing panic. It's spookier than the original episode , and reminiscent of Jadzia Dax being haunted by Dax's murderous past host Joran in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 4, "Equilibrium".

10 Episodes Of The 1980's Twilight Zone Revival That Are Just As Good As The Original Series

John cho (lt. hikaru sulu), the twilight zone (2019) season 1, episode 5 "wunderkind".

John Cho's episode of Jordan Peele's The Twilight Zone sees Cho as a down-on-his-luck Presidential campaign manager determined to turn his career around after his candidate loses the previous election in a landslide. Cho's Raff Hanks finds a tween YouTube star, Oliver Foley (Jacob Tremblay), with a wholesome demeanor and promises of video games for every American that, with Hanks' help, endears Oliver to a jaded American public and lands him the Presidency. Cho navigates the whims of the prepubescent President as best he can, but even J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 's Lt. Hikaru Sulu can't turn the helm from the disaster that awaits him ... in The Twilight Zone .

The similarities between Star Trek and The Twilight Zone have enriched both franchises , despite their very different approaches to storytelling. The Twilight Zone uses its dystopic lens to examine the ways that reality seems off-kilter with its explorations into the unfamiliar, while Star Trek keeps its eye on the possibility of an optimistic future. Both series have enjoyed revivals in the same eras, when changing cultural paradigms inspire stories that provide commentary on society. Actors common to both Star Trek and The Twilight Zone get a chance to explore both sides of this critical coin, and ask audiences to do the same.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine are streaming on Paramount+. The Twilight Zone (2019) is streaming on Syfy and Freevee. The Twilight Zone (1985) is available on YouTube.

Every Star Trek Actor In 1980s & Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone

Screen Rant

10 star trek actors who were on criminal minds.

Star Trek and Criminal Minds may take place in vastly different universes, but several Trek stars have appeared on the dark crime drama.

  • Star Trek stars found unique roles in Criminal Minds, showcasing their range as actors in the dark crime drama.
  • Criminal Minds delves into human depravity while Star Trek celebrates optimism and exploration.
  • Many familiar Star Trek faces appeared in Criminal Minds, adding depth and variety to the crime drama's cast of characters.

The Star Trek universe may not have much in common with the world of Criminal Minds , but several Trek stars appeared in the dark crime drama. With its focus on exploration and its optimistic version of the future, Star Trek celebrates the best of humanity. Criminal Minds , on the other hand, explores the depths of human depravity, but still has moments of light as the heroes fight to put the bad guys behind bars. The familiar Star Trek faces on Criminal Minds display their range as actors , often playing characters very different (and significantly more homicidal) from their Trek characters.

With the nature of procedural crime dramas like Criminal Minds , every episode has a cast of characters involved in the crime of the week. Criminal Minds follows a group of FBI agents who work as profilers in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) , and take on cases too complex or far-reaching for local law enforcement to handle. After its premiere in 2005, Criminal Minds became a ratings hit for CBS and remains popular today. Whether they were playing a victim or an unsub (unknown subject) or a member of law enforcement, these 10 Star Trek stars all appeared in at least one episode of Criminal Minds .

Criminal Minds was canceled by CBS in 2020 after its fifteenth season, but was picked up by Paramount+ in 2022 for a sixteenth season as Criminal Minds: Evolution . The seventeenth season began filming in January 2024.

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

10 todd stashwick, captain liam shaw in star trek: picard, star trek: picard.

Todd Stashwick's Captain Liam Shaw became a surprise fan-favorite in Star Trek: Picard season 3 , thanks in large part to Stashwick's compelling performance. As Captain of the USS Titan-A, Shaw did things by the book and was none too pleased when Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) pulled his ship into a dangerous rescue mission.

Although Shaw sacrificed himself in Star Trek: Picard season 3's penultimate episode, Picard showrunner Terry Matalas has confirmed the character will return if the proposed spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy, ever becomes a reality.

Todd Stashwick has appeared in numerous genre television shows, including a guest spot on Supernatural and a starring role on Terry Matalas's 12 Monkeys . In Criminal Minds season 9, episode 5, "Route 66," Stashwick plays a robber who abducts his estranged daughter and later becomes a spree killer.

9 Jeffrey Combs

Shran in star trek: enterprise, weyoun & brunt in star trek: deep space nine, & others, star trek: enterprise, star trek: deep space nine.

The always versatile Jeffrey Combs has played numerous Star Trek characters across multiple series, and has become one of the franchise's favorite guest stars. Combs appeared in all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise as the Andorian Thy'lek Shran, who sometimes butted heads with Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Combs portrayed every Vorta Weyoun clone, a role created especially for him.

Combs also appeared as a couple of different Ferengi, most notably as Liquidator Brunt on DS9, as well as an unknown alien named Tiron and Tsunkatse coordinator Penk. Combs has had a prolific television career, and he appeared in Criminal Minds season 9, episode 12, "The Black Queen" as serial killer and computer hacker John Nichols.

Jeffrey Combs also provided the voice for the computer AGIMUS in two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks

8 Ethan Phillips

Neelix in star trek: voyager, star trek: voyager.

Ethan Phillips portrayed Talaxian chef Neelix in all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager . Neelix joined the crew of the USS Voyager soon after the ship found itself in the Delta Quadrant , and he acted as a consultant and guide for the unexplored area of space. Neelix's personality contrasted sharply with Security Chief Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ) and the two developed an antagonistic friendship.

Neelix and Tuvok became one of Star Trek's best duos, and Neelix developed into a valuable and versatile member of Voyager's crew. Ethan Phillips has appeared in numerous television shows and films, including several crime procedural dramas. In Criminal Minds season 1, episode 17, "A Real Rain," Phillips portrayed Marvin Doyle, a schizophrenic serial killer who believed himself to be a vigilante.

7 John Billingsley

Dr. phlox in star trek: enterprise.

In all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise, John Billingsly portrayed Dr. Phlox, the Chief Medical Officer on the Enterprise NX-01 under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). A member of the Denobulan species, Phlox cared deeply about his patients and often used unorthodox methods of treatment to cure their ailments. He kept a menagerie of alien animals in his sickbay to assist in various healing practices.

During his time on the Enterprise, Phlox became good friends with Captain Archer, and Archer often went to Phlox for counseling and advice. Like many television actors, John Billingsly has popped up in numerous crime dramas, including Bones and NCIS: Los Angeles . Billingsley appeared as budding serial killer Hugh Rollins in Criminal Minds season 4, episode 21, "A Shade of Gray."

6 wil wheaton, ensign wesley crusher in star trek: the next generation, star trek: the next generation.

Fresh off of the success of Stand By Me , Wil Wheaton joined the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the show's first season as the young Wesley Crusher. As the son of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Wesley had more freedom on the USS Enterprise-D than most children. Wes was a bit of a child prodigy and often helped the Enterprise crew find solutions when the ship encountered problems.

Wesley left TNG in the show's fourth season to attend Starfleet Academy but later dropped out to join the enigmatic Traveler (Eric Menyuk) on his journeys throughout time and space. Wheaton has since become a fixture of the Star Trek franchise, hosting the official Star Trek aftershow, The Ready Room . In a very atypical role for Wheaton, he portrayed a psychopathic serial killer named Floyd Hansen in Criminal Minds season 4, episode 4, "Paradise."

Wil Wheaton briefly reprised the role of Wesley Crusher as a Traveler in the Star Trek: Picard season 2 finale.

Commander Tuvok in Star Trek: Voyager

Lieutenant Tuvok served as the Chief of Security of the USS Voyager for all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager . As a Vulcan, Tuvok often served as the logical voice of reason on Voyager, and he was one of Captain Kathryn Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) most trusted advisors. Tuvok and Janeway were also close personal friends, who had met several years prior to the Vulcan's assignment on Voyager.

Tim Russ is no stranger to police procedurals, having appeared in episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and NCIS , among others. One of the few actors on this list who didn't portray a suspect in Criminal Minds , Tim Russ appeared in season 13, episode 2, "To a Better Place," as Agent Lawrence. Lawrence was one of the committee members who helped reinstate Special Agent Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler).

4 Connor Trinneer

Commander charles "trip" tucker in star trek: enterprise.

Trip served as the Chief Engineer on the Enterprise NX-01, under the command of his good friend, Captain Archer. Outgoing and down-to-earth, Trip was a gifted engineer who was largely self-taught before joining Starfleet in 2139. Despite their differences, Trip and Vulcan Sub-commander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) developed feelings for one another over the course of Star Trek: Enterprise , but their romance was cut short by the show's cancelation in season 4.

Trip was supposedly killed in Enterprise's controversial series finale , but the events were only seen via holographic recreations on the holodeck. Connor Trinneer had a memorable 10-episode stint on Stargate: Atlantis , and has appeared in 24, NCIS: Los Angeles, and ABC's 9-1-1 . In Criminal Minds season 4, episode 3, "Minimal Loss," Trineer portrayed Dan Torre alongside Luke Perry's cult leader, Benjamin Cyrus.

3 René Auberjonois

Constable odo in star trek: deep space nine.

The late René Auberjonois portrayed the stern but lovable Changeling, Constable Odo, in all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . As Chief of Security on DS9, Odo was a brilliant detective who was aware of nearly everything and everyone on the busy space station. He ran a tight station and often butted heads with Ferengi bartender Quark (Armin Shimerman) who regularly participated in illicit activities.

Throughout his time on the station, Odo developed feelings for Bajoran Major Kira (Nana Visitor) and she later came to reciprocate those feelings. René Auberjonois starred alongside William Shatner in Boston Legal , and has also appeared in episodes of Grey's Anatomy, NCIS, and Warehouse 13. Auberjonois portrayed attempted proxy killer Colonel Ron Massey in Criminal Minds season 7, episode 9, "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy."

The first Kelpian in Starfleet, Saru has grown and changed a lot over the course of Discovery's five seasons, and even found love in an incredibly sweet relationship with the Vulcan President of Ni'Var, T'Rina (Tara Rosling).

With his tall stature and distinctive look, Doug Jones has had a prolific career playing monsters and creepy creatures in horror films, often working with director Guillermo del Toro. Jones played two different characters in two episodes of Criminal Minds : drug addict Domino Thacker in season 1, episode 11, "Blood Hungry" and fight club captain Beanie in season 4, episode 10, "Brothers in Arms."

In TNG season 3, Frakes tried his hand at directing, and he has since become one of Star Trek's most beloved and prolific directors.

Frakes has directed episodes of numerous popular television shows, including crime procedurals like Castle and NCIS: Los Angeles . In Criminal Minds season 5, episode 12, "The Uncanny Valley," Frakes portrayed child psychiatrist and pedophile Dr. Arthur Malcolm , the father of serial killer Samantha Malcolm (Jennifer Hasty). Frakes is just one of the many recognizable Star Trek faces that have appeared on Criminal Minds throughout its fifteen seasons.
