Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

Embarking from either Broome or Darwin, Silversea Cruises’ Silver Cloud delivers the ultimate big boat luxury experience over 10 days. For the 200 passengers on board, all suites have butler service and ocean views. Twenty zodiac boats ferry guests to fishing spots and narrow waterways. Helicopter excursions to the four-tiered Mitchell Falls can be arranged, and historians, naturalists and geologists travel on board.

Choose from eight cabin types, including the opulent spa suites with four-poster king beds, jacuzzi overlooking the private verandah, and oversized steam shower. If you need more space, snap up the 247-square metre two-bedroom penthouse suite.

Helicopters and zodiac rides are at your fingertips, as is French champagne, on this 11-day itinerary from Darwin to Broome (or vice versa) that includes stops at the remote Buccaneer Archipelago and the Lacepede Islands.

5. Kimberley Expeditions

Step on board the 36-guest Reef Prince and find yourself cruising through towering gorges, zipping ‘down river’ in the excursion tenders and sneaking into secluded bays.

With a focus on affordability for guests, Kimberley Expeditions offers action-packed 11-day cruises from Broome to Darwin (and vice versa). All cabins have ensuites and either queen-sized, double, or twin single beds. Best time to cruise the Kimberley

There are two main seasons in the Kimberley: wet and dry. The dry season runs between May and October, with the remaining months being the wet season. The dry season is the best time to take a Kimberley cruise, with the peak tourist months in the Kimberley being June and July. The wet season can be unbearably hot and humid, whilst the dry season is generally warm and sunny in the daytime. November is generally the hottest month.

A Kimberley cruise in May is ideal for seeing waterfalls at their fullest, following the rainy season. The landscapes will look a lot drier towards the end of the dry season. Originally built in 1979 as a pearl lugger for famed Paspaley Pearls, the Kimberley Pearl has been fully transformed into an intimate and very stylish 12 passenger cruiser offering small group explorations of the Kimberley Coast.

You'll embark on your True North Kimberley cruise from Kununurra, boarding around 5.00 pm in time for a sunset drink before setting sail at 6.30 pm. Get to know your fellow adventurers over a special dinner served shortly after leaving port for the overnight cruise to King George River.

On your first full day you will encounter one of the Kimberley's must-see attractions, the mighty King George River and falls. Here you'll anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and find endless places to explore. Climb the gorge walls or take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a cruise highlight. A walk at Tranquil Bay is also an option this afternoon, or learn of the history of the Koolama wreck. Enjoy sunset drinks and dinner as the stars light up the Kimberley night sky.

Explore the Drysdale and fish for the impressive mangrove jack, before heading up-river for tea and scones. There's an opportunity to indulge in some beachcombing and the ship’s helicopter will visit the remote community of Kalumburu during the afternoon.

Take up the opportunity to visit the ‘Bradshaws’ ancient rock art site featuring some of the oldest paintings known to man. Opt for the heli-picnic at Eagle Falls for aerial views and destination lunch alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in the middle of remote far-north of Western Australia. The tenders will be busy exploring local beaches and creeks before all the guests reconvene to share tales over drinks on the deck.

The Mitchell River is the destination of the day, where the adventure boats head up to the scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim. We'll join the fishermen to hunt for the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls. Next is a unique opportunity to sip a glass of sparkling trying on exquisite pieces of diamond and pearl jewellery, created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

Wake up to views over the turquoise waters of Swift Bay and an early breakfast before a search for the black-lip oyster. Savour their unique taste direct from the rock before heading to some Wandjina galleries nearby. Keep watch over the waters to spot some light game species that inhabit this area such as queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel as you head to the picturesque Winyalkin Island for sunset drinks.

The Roe River offers another great opportunity to catch barramundi as we explore a river that boasts one of the highest crocodile counts in the Kimberley. The Roe was named after the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia, John Septimus Roe. He conducted numerous expeditions along the Kimberley coast between 1829 and 1849 and the ship’s helicopter will dramatically demonstrate the maze of creeks and endless coast that the early explorers encountered. In the afternoon, sail into Prince Frederick Harbour to visit a Wandjina art site on the aptly named Art Island. The helicopter will be available to perch on one of the Kimberley’s highest peaks for sunset overlooking Prince Frederick Harbour.

Journey along the magnificent Hunter River today, a river system lined with red cliffs and rainforest beyond. The Hunter is about as far away from civilisation as you can get in Australia, and the area is known for its large crocodile population and mud-crabs nesting in the dense mangroves. Activities today include fishing, bird-watching, mud-crabbing and simply exploring where few have been before. We highly recommend the hike to Jackson Falls or enjoy the splendour from the helicopter. As the afternoon approaches, visit one of the Kimberley’s most historic sites, the Phillip Parker King’s boab tree.

The scenery will capture you today as you cruise along the Prince Regent River before pulling up at the base of the King Cascades waterfall. View the falls as they rain down from above, before another helicopter flight to a remote spot that you’ll never forget; land alongside a crystal clear billabong for a picnic lunch.

Early-risers will be treated to a heli-flight with a difference; a champagne sunrise on the top of a mountain. Then it’s time for more adventure in the tenders – a chance to hike, or take a refreshing billabong swim or perhaps you’d like to venture further upriver to visit the spectacular ‘Amphitheatre’ waterfall. Later the helicopter will take to the skies once again, for a multi-stop trip to a number of remote rock art sites that are only accessible by air.

A different but equally magical day awaits with True North cruising, with a devoted morning to exploring the Sale River. Join naturalists and adventurers alike on a classic river expedition. After lunch you'll arrive at the impressive Montgomery Reef. The reef is a unique eco-system that must be seen to be believed with its 140 square miles of coral reef rising out of the ocean with the ebb and flow of the tide. Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a glimpse of the world beneath the glassy surface. Turtles, dugong, manta rays and other marine life call this special ecosystem home. Helicopter and tender boat adventures are options today or just take in the views of the reef from the deck. Included: B - L - D

Start the day with some fishing at 'Three Ways' followed by a moderate walk to Ruby Falls; be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the large natural rock pool. Later, keen anglers will take-off on a heli fishing adventure to a secret spot where the fresh water meets the salt. As the day comes to an end, make your way to the bar lounge for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.

Today you'll reach the final icon on your cruise of the Kimberley's - Horizontal Falls. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air-conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience.

Take a refreshing swim and walk along white sand Silica Beach or head to Whirlpool Pass, another demonstration of the Kimberley’s powerful tides.

As your day and adventure on True North draws to a close, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow travellers, sharing your most treasured moments in this beautiful region.

A commonly asked question is “When is the best time to see the Kimberley?” And the answer is “The Kimberley is always at its best!” However certain times of the year can make it easier to satisfy particular interest. For example, if you would like to see plenty of whale action then departures in August and September are definitely for you! Why the best way to see Australia is on a cruise

K nown for its epic road and rail trips through the vast, open countryside of the dusty Outback , Australia is often overlooked by Brits as a cruise destination. Yet the world’s largest island has over 37,000 miles of coastline fronting the Southern, Pacific and Indian Oceans, plus various smaller seas. Even the locals know the appeal of the sea, with 85 per cent of Australians living within 50km of the coast.

As a result, almost every kind of cruise imaginable can be found here; be it on a mega-ship with stacks of facilities; a boutique brand with a more refined air; a luxurious riverboat; or an expedition ship that can venture to truly out-of-the-way places. And with most of Australia's key attractions and cities scattered around its fringes, explorations by cruise (preferably topped and tailed with land-based touring) can pack any number of Down Under wonders into a single trip.

I've been lucky enough to visit Australia more than a dozen times, and some of my greatest memories are of experiences that I've had from the deck of a ship. I once set sail to New Zealand from Sydney, with the tiles atop the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine as we passed, and far from land on the Great Barrier Reef, I leaned over the railings to marvel at its underwater patchwork of cobalt and turquoise in an otherwise midnight-blue sea. 

Perhaps the most incredible experience of all was a cruise in the Kimberley : the little-visited wilderness region at the top of Western Australia. It's vast and sparsely populated – bigger than Britain but with fewer residents than a mid-sized English town – and its attractions are so remarkable that they would be crowded with visitors were they easier to access. But on a small-ship sailing with Coral Expeditions, I was one of just 120 guests exploring the waterfalls, reefs and ancient rock art for which the Kimberley is famed.

At the uninhabited Lacepede Islands, we saw seabirds and turtles in mind-boggling numbers. In Talbot Bay, we powered through one-of-a-kind Horizontal Falls in a Zodiac. And at Montgomery Reef, we watched a coral-encrusted plateau seemingly rise from the sea on a falling tide. 

It wasn’t only the epic landscapes and their intriguing wildlife – humpback whales, lemon sharks, saltwater crocs – that impressed. Etched in my memory is the experience of first seeing the Wandjina (ancient rock art). These alien beings stare down from rock art galleries across the region: a symbol of the oldest continuous culture on the planet, and of the Indigenous people's long connection to the land. A land littered with surprises best experienced by boat. 

Classic Kimberley 

Remote, isolated and with little infrastructure for land-based journeys, there are few parts of the world as suited to expedition cruises as the Kimberley. Make the festive season extra-special on a cruise along Australia’s entire south coast, taking in nine ports of call. Nobody is more qualified to share Australia’s stories than its traditional owners and custodians. On a voyage through remote Barrier Reef islands en route to Cape York and Arnhem Land, you will meet indigenous Torres Strait islanders and other Aboriginal peoples to experience their culture, art and homelands, including Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. Along the way, spy dugongs, turtles, saltwater crocodiles and the birdlife of Kakadu’s wetlands.

Murray river flow 

River cruises are rare down under, ­making an active experience on the mighty Murray – the nation’s principal waterway – all the more remarkable. Murray River Trails offers short cruises aboard a 12-berth houseboat, with a daily programme of guided walks and activities. The small-group, into-the-wild nature of the experience lends itself to wildlife encounters, with sightings of echidnas, emus, koalas and ­unusual native birds all possible. It is a fascinating insight into authentic inland Australia.

Kim and swim

The Kimberley may have beguiling blue waters, but dips in the sea are foolhardy (and forbidden) due to the dangerous saltwater crocodiles that call the region home. Sidestep that inconvenience on a voyage with Ponant, which combines classic Kimberley elements ­(Montgomery Reef, Horizontal Falls) with the little-visited Rowley Shoals – one of the world’s most sensational snorkelling and diving destinations. Located west of Broome, in the Timor Sea, these croc-free coral atolls brim with colourful sea life.

Queensland immersion 

Take a deep dive down under on a Great Barrier Reef & Beyond itinerary with Windstar Cruises. This holiday is particularly good for wildlife-lovers. Look out for wedge-tailed shearwaters, sooty terns and noddies while passing Willis Island; spot dingoes on sandy Fraser Island; and cuddle a koala at Australia Zoo (established by the late Steve Irwin). Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
