15 Kimberley cruises to experience for the adventure of a lifetime

Leah McLennan

Travel Journalist

18 October 2023

Time

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

Small Ship Cruises in Kimberleys

Kimberley Cruises  are among the best cruises around Australia, filled with stunning scenery and fascinating wildlife, all spread over a vast and remote area in the northwestern part of the country. Part of Western Australia, the Kimberley region shares land borders with Western Australia’s Pilbara and the Northern Territory. The Indian Ocean and Timor Sea lap the region’s northern and western shores. Named after a past Secretary of State for the Colonies, the 1st Earl of Kimberley, the Kimberley is often said to be Australia's last frontier.

Cruises to the Kimberleys take in waterfalls and beaches, gorges and mountains, and many other unique and unspoilt natural attractions. Kimberley wildlife encounters are abundant, with crocodiles, wallabies, dingos, anteaters, monitor lizards, birds, and others. Learn more about the people of Australia’s past, as you admire ancient Aboriginal rock art and walk in the footsteps of early pioneers. A spectacular land that is ripe with many discoveries, Kimberley boat cruises let you enjoy the very best of this rugged wilderness.

Top things to do and see in the Kimberley

In addition to awe-inspiring natural features, interesting wildlife, ancient rock art, and cultural experiences, the best Kimberley cruises offer a range of activities too, letting you fully immerse yourself in the Australian outback way of life. From crocodile feeding and fishing to relaxing and sunbathing, there’s never a dull moment onboard a Kimberley small ship cruise. Here are some of the best things to see and do in the Kimberley:

King George Falls - The highest waterfalls in Western Australia, the beautiful twin falls of King George Falls stand at more than 80 metres (262 feet) high, the powerful water cascading down the craggy rocks with a thunderous roar, crashing into the deep pool below. One of the region’s most breathtaking sights, you may have a feeling of deja vu if you’ve seen the movie “Australia” by Baz Luhrmann. Admire the majestic sight from the waters or climb up the rocks for alternate views of nature’s fine work.

Mitchell River - One of the Kimberleys’ “big rivers”, look out for big barramundi and fearsome crocodiles as you cruise along the Mitchell River. Soak up the scenic views and perhaps also take a trip onto the Mitchell Plateau to see the superb Mitchell Falls.

Hunter River - Experience the feeling of being far, far away from the rest of the world as your Kimberley small ship cruise makes its way along the picturesque Hunter River. Verdant rainforests stud the surrounding mountains and the waters are home to thick mangrove forests.

Prince Regent River to King Cascades - Sail along the sparkling waters of the unusually straight Prince Regent River, and peer down to see if you can spot the diverse fish that inhabit the river. Continue through the Prince Regent National Park and get ready to be blown away by the King Cascades, a wide and photogenic waterfall that you will surely hear before you see. Surrounded by vibrant flashes of colour, it looks as though the water is tumbling step by step down a red and black stone staircase.

Montgomery Reef and Horizontal Falls - Lying just off the coast and surrounded by the Montgomery Islands, Montgomery Reef is another highlight of a cruise around Australia. As the tide goes out, water gushes through the exposed reef, creating many magical waterfalls. Huge lagoons, red islets, and a mangrove island can be seen during low tide, becoming invisible again when the waters are high. You can also marvel at one of the world’s most unusual natural phenomenons at the Horizontal Falls. Created as seawater builds up faster on one side of the gap in the coastline than the other, forming a waterfall up to 5m high that moves horizontally, as opposed to vertically.

Surveyors Creek - If you’re aching to cool down in Australia’s heat, the invitingly refreshing and cool waters of Surveyors Creek may be just what you need. With no crocodiles lurking in the waters, it’s a great place for a swim.

Gwion Gwion - Also known as the Bradshaws, Gwion Gwion is an Aboriginal term that refers to ancient rock art that can be found around the Kimberleys. Take a journey into the past from your Kimberley cruise and gaze upon tribal-like paintings, most of which depict humans with assorted garments and accessories.

Kimberley Wildlife Encounters - There are plenty of wildlife encounters in the Kimberley. You will certainly develop a healthy fear of the ferocious crocodile! Look out for the large dragon-like monitor lizards too, swimming through the waters and scuttling across land. Dingos, wallabies, and anteaters roam the landscapes, along with wild pigs, donkeys, and other stray animals, whilst the waters are home to dugongs, barramundi, manta rays, turtles, and a variety of other fish and aquatic life. Watch wading birds catching their dinner and look out for other bird species flying through the skies.

Adventure Activities on the Land / Boat - Your Australia adventure cruise will include opportunities for hiking in remote and scenic areas, letting you truly feel connected with the land and peoples that once lived there. Fish for your supper (or throw your catches back), or try your hand at mud crabbing,

Adventure Activities in the Water - Add another level to your Kimberley wildlife viewing and adventure activities and have a go at snorkelling or scuba diving. Spy an interesting array of creatures and a whole new underwater world.

Adventure Activities in the Sky - Some Kimberley cruises include the option to take a scenic helicopter flight for a bird’s eye view of some of the most magnificent waterfalls, rivers, and other natural landmarks.

Top Tips for visiting the Kimberley on a cruise

  • If you plan to film the majesty of King Cascades make sure your microphone is on; you don’t want to miss capturing the mighty roar of the falling water!
  • Whilst you’ll want your camera at many points throughout your Australia cruise, don’t miss snapping the beauty of King George Falls and the local wildlife.
  • Don’t forget to pack your hiking boots, swimming gear, and sunglasses. You may also want to take your own snorkelling gear.
  • Always listen carefully to any warnings and/or guidance related to crocodiles.
  • Drink plenty of water in hot weather to stay hydrated.

Best time to cruise the Kimberley

There are two main seasons in the Kimberley: wet and dry. The dry season runs between May and October, with the remaining months being the wet season. The dry season is the best time to take a Kimberley cruise, with the peak tourist months in the Kimberley being June and July. The wet season can be unbearably hot and humid, whilst the dry season is generally warm and sunny in the daytime. November is generally the hottest month.

A Kimberley cruise in May is ideal for seeing waterfalls at their fullest, following the rainy season. The landscapes will look a lot drier towards the end of the dry season. There is, however, typically more wildlife around in the wet season. Plan ahead and book your Kimberley cruise depending on your main interests.

An exciting Australia cruise of the Kimberley generally departs from Broome, Wyndham, or Darwin. Each has an international airport, respectively Broome International Airport (BME), Wyndham Airport (WYN), and Darwin International Airport (DRW). Getting to the departure point for your Kimberley cruise from each airport is easy.

Australia’s main international airports are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. Whilst connecting flights operate from each of these airports to the airports close to your cruise departure point, Perth Airport (PER) is often the most convenient as it is also located within the state of Western Australia .

KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

The Kimberley Expedition Port Highlights

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a Zodiac® to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a Zodiac® ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. As you explore one of the ‘greatest natural wonders of the world’, you’ll search for incredible marine wildlife in their natural habitat from your Zodiac® – dolphins, octopuses, fish, reef sharks, turtles, sea snakes and more.

Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls

Expect the unexpected amongst the spectacular rock formations and lush mangroves. Most waterfalls cascade vertically, but here tides push intense currents between narrow gorges to create a horizontal effect.

Wil maps STATE WA 13 Night

April - August

Note: Alternative 7 day and 10 day True North Kimberley Cruises are available between March and August, or visit Rowley Shoal’s coral atolls in September.

You'll embark on your True North Kimberley cruise from Kununurra, boarding around 5.00 pm in time for a sunset drink before setting sail at 6.30 pm. Get to know your fellow adventurers over a special dinner served shortly after leaving port for the overnight cruise to King George River.

Included: D

On your first full day you will encounter one of the Kimberley's must-see attractions, the mighty King George River and falls. Here you'll anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and find endless places to explore. Climb the gorge walls or take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a cruise highlight. A walk at Tranquil Bay is also an option this afternoon, or learn of the history of the Koolama wreck. Enjoy sunset drinks and dinner as the stars light up the Kimberley night sky.

Included: B - L - D

True north TWN FALLS HIKE

Explore the Drysdale and fish for the impressive mangrove jack, before heading up-river for tea and scones. There's an opportunity to indulge in some beachcombing and the ship’s helicopter will visit the remote community of Kalumburu during the afternoon.

True north billy tea drysdale river

Take up the opportunity to visit the ‘Bradshaws’ ancient rock art site featuring some of the oldest paintings known to man. Opt for the heli-picnic at Eagle Falls for aerial views and destination lunch alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in the middle of remote far-north of Western Australia. The tenders will be busy exploring local beaches and creeks before all the guests reconvene to share tales over drinks on the deck.

Day3 True North eagle falls

The Mitchell River is the destination of the day, where the adventure boats head up to the scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim. We'll join the fishermen to hunt for the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls. Next is a unique opportunity to sip a glass of sparkling trying on exquisite pieces of diamond and pearl jewellery, created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

Day7 True North The Kimberley Excursion 1

Wake up to views over the turquoise waters of Swift Bay and an early breakfast before a search for the black-lip oyster. Savour their unique taste direct from the rock before heading to some Wandjina galleries nearby. Keep watch over the waters to spot some light game species that inhabit this area such as queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel as you head to the picturesque Winyalkin Island for sunset drinks.

True north winyalkin island

The Roe River offers another great opportunity to catch barramundi as we explore a river that boasts one of the highest crocodile counts in the Kimberley. The Roe was named after the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia, John Septimus Roe. He conducted numerous expeditions along the Kimberley coast between 1829 and 1849 and the ship’s helicopter will dramatically demonstrate the maze of creeks and endless coast that the early explorers encountered. In the afternoon, sail into Prince Frederick Harbour to visit a Wandjina art site on the aptly named Art Island. The helicopter will be available to perch on one of the Kimberley’s highest peaks for sunset overlooking Prince Frederick Harbour.

PRINCE FREDERICK

Journey along the magnificent Hunter River today, a river system lined with red cliffs and rainforest beyond. The Hunter is about as far away from civilisation as you can get in Australia, and the area is known for its large crocodile population and mud-crabs nesting in the dense mangroves. Activities today include fishing, bird-watching, mud-crabbing and simply exploring where few have been before. We highly recommend the hike to Jackson Falls or enjoy the splendour from the helicopter. As the afternoon approaches, visit one of the Kimberley’s most historic sites, the Phillip Parker King’s boab tree.

True North Kimberley Hunter River

The scenery will capture you today as you cruise along the Prince Regent River before pulling up at the base of the King Cascades waterfall. View the falls as they rain down from above, before another helicopter flight to a remote spot that you’ll never forget; land alongside a crystal clear billabong for a picnic lunch.

Day5 True North Kimberley King Cascade

Early-risers will be treated to a heli-flight with a difference; a champagne sunrise on the top of a mountain. Then it’s time for more adventure in the tenders – a chance to hike, or take a refreshing billabong swim or perhaps you’d like to venture further upriver to visit the spectacular ‘Amphitheatre’ waterfall. Later the helicopter will take to the skies once again, for a multi-stop trip to a number of remote rock art sites that are only accessible by air.

A different but equally magical day awaits with True North cruising, with a devoted morning to exploring the Sale River. Join naturalists and adventurers alike on a classic river expedition. After lunch you'll arrive at the impressive Montgomery Reef. The reef is a unique eco-system that must be seen to be believed with its 140 square miles of coral reef rising out of the ocean with the ebb and flow of the tide. Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a glimpse of the world beneath the glassy surface. Turtles, dugong, manta rays and other marine life call this special ecosystem home. Helicopter and tender boat adventures are options today or just take in the views of the reef from the deck. Included: B - L - D

Day6 True North Kimberley Montgomery Reef

Start the day with some fishing at 'Three Ways' followed by a moderate walk to Ruby Falls; be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the large natural rock pool. Later, keen anglers will take-off on a heli fishing adventure to a secret spot where the fresh water meets the salt. As the day comes to an end, make your way to the bar lounge for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.

True North Kimberley Fishing 1

Today you'll reach the final icon on your cruise of the Kimberley's - Horizontal Falls. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air-conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience.

Take a refreshing swim and walk along white sand Silica Beach or head to Whirlpool Pass, another demonstration of the Kimberley’s powerful tides.

As your day and adventure on True North draws to a close, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow travellers, sharing your most treasured moments in this beautiful region.

Returning to International

True North’s founding director Craig Howson and managing director Chad Avenell, recently met with local representatives ahead of recommencing Indonesian itineraries in 2023. Watch the video above to discover how True North ensures smooth operation well in advance of departure.

Time to Book Ahead

Hear from someone who truly knows about the value of booking ahead. “Cheggers” has travelled on the TRUE NORTH more than anyone else!

True North Sails into 30 Years

True North Adventure Cruises - has sailed into 30 years of continuous operations. The now revered adventure-cruise operator first cruised Western Australia’s remote Kimberley coast during 1987 when founding director Craig Howson commenced fishing type charters along a coastline that was and still is largely inaccessible from land.

The Helicopter

Adding another dimension to the adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH feature an on-board helicopter! Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness!

Myles Pollard's Fishing Adventure

There is nothing better than a day out on the water, especially when the fish are biting! Fishing on-board the TRUE NORTH is a much-favoured activity both with guests who have never picked up a rod before and, with those who have "caught them all!” Our guides encourage everybody on-board to “give it a go” and the TRUE NORTH’s multiple adventure boats never fail to bring back a swag of ‘fishing tales’! Stories about the ladies who out-fish the boys are pretty common, humorous equipment failures also come to note on a regular basis, then there are the ‘birthday fish’, the ‘monster fish’ and of course, the ones that got away! Our guides have seen and heard it all! Watch the video to find out more about actor Myles Pollard's fishing adventure!

TRUE NORTH Impresses Again

The TRUE NORTH has once again impressed on the world stage coming second in the 2020 Traveller Made Brand Storytelling competition. Traveller Made is Europe’s largest travel consortium and its members represent the very best in luxury travel providers and suppliers. The group’s inaugural Brand Storytelling competition was an opportunity for leading travel brand’s to showcase “the story behind their brand” and, the competition attracted entries from some of the world’s most respected travel brands. In such esteemed company, True North’s marketing team was especially pleased to receive this additional acknowledgement.

Adventure En Plein Air

West Australian artist Jacob 'Shakey' Butler joined the TRUE NORTH earlier this season and discovered the Kimberley's raw beauty. As the artist in residence, Jacob set up his canvas on remote beaches, beside freshwater billabongs and on-deck surrounded by pindan-coloured gorges. Watch the video above to hear Jacob describing how the Kimberley inspires the art of adventure.

Catriona Rowntree Talks With Craig Howson

A commonly asked question is “When is the best time to see the Kimberley?” And the answer is “The Kimberley is always at its best!” However certain times of the year can make it easier to satisfy particular interest. For example, if you would like to see plenty of whale action then departures in August and September are definitely for you! From late July humpback and southern right whales reach the Kimberley after swimming-up the west coast to reach breeding grounds in the north and it’s very common for guests to get great views of whales breaching and basking on the surface.

Why the best way to see Australia is on a cruise

K nown for its epic road and rail trips through the vast, open countryside of the dusty Outback , Australia is often overlooked by Brits as a cruise destination. Yet the world’s largest island has over 37,000 miles of coastline fronting the Southern, Pacific and Indian Oceans, plus various smaller seas. Even the locals know the appeal of the sea, with 85 per cent of Australians living within 50km of the coast.

As a result, almost every kind of cruise imaginable can be found here; be it on a mega-ship with stacks of facilities; a boutique brand with a more refined air; a luxurious riverboat; or an expedition ship that can venture to truly out-of-the-way places. And with most of Australia's key attractions and cities scattered around its fringes, explorations by cruise (preferably topped and tailed with land-based touring) can pack any number of Down Under wonders into a single trip.

I've been lucky enough to visit Australia more than a dozen times, and some of my greatest memories are of experiences that I've had from the deck of a ship. I once set sail to New Zealand from Sydney, with the tiles atop the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine as we passed, and far from land on the Great Barrier Reef, I leaned over the railings to marvel at its underwater patchwork of cobalt and turquoise in an otherwise midnight-blue sea.

Perhaps the most incredible experience of all was a cruise in the Kimberley : the little-visited wilderness region at the top of Western Australia. It's vast and sparsely populated – bigger than Britain but with fewer residents than a mid-sized English town – and its attractions are so remarkable that they would be crowded with visitors were they easier to access. But on a small-ship sailing with Coral Expeditions, I was one of just 120 guests exploring the waterfalls, reefs and ancient rock art for which the Kimberley is famed.

At the uninhabited Lacepede Islands, we saw seabirds and turtles in mind-boggling numbers. In Talbot Bay, we powered through one-of-a-kind Horizontal Falls in a Zodiac. And at Montgomery Reef, we watched a coral-encrusted plateau seemingly rise from the sea on a falling tide.

It wasn’t only the epic landscapes and their intriguing wildlife – humpback whales, lemon sharks, saltwater crocs – that impressed. Etched in my memory is the experience of first seeing the Wandjina (ancient rock art). These alien beings stare down from rock art galleries across the region: a symbol of the oldest continuous culture on the planet, and of the Indigenous people's long connection to the land. A land littered with surprises best experienced by boat.

Classic Kimberley

Remote, isolated and with little infrastructure for land-based journeys, there are few parts of the world as suited to expedition cruises as the Kimberley. Explore it with Coral Expeditions – the pioneers of cruising in the region – on a formula perfected over four decades of operations. Itineraries are timed to experience key sites at optimal tidal phases: expect to see Montgomery Reef being drained by dozens of miniature cascades, and Horizontal Falls at its powerful best.

How to do it

Ten-night cruises between Darwin and Broome with Coral Expeditions operate between April and September and cost from £3,965pp; excludes flights.

Aussie icons

Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef are two of Australia’s most recognisable icons. Experience both with Princess Cruises, whose journeys up the eastern seaboard from Sydney to tropical North Queensland stop in Cairns for reef and Daintree Rainforest excursions, and Airlie Beach, gateway to the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands.

How to do it

A 16-night Sydney & Queensland Showcase cruise-and-stay from Cruise Kings (0800 197 8050) includes an 11-night round-trip cruise from Sydney aboard Majestic Princess and a three-night pre-cruise Sydney stay from £2,799pp. Departs January 26 & March 26 2024;  departs September 8 2023; includes flights. .

Southern comforts

Make the festive season extra-special on a cruise along Australia’s entire south coast, taking in nine ports of call. Esperance, Adelaide, Cape Le Grand National Park and Kangaroo Island are among the highlights, with shore excursion that include wine tastings and local wildlife sightings. Better still, spend Christmas Day at sea before arriving in Sydney for a two-night stay that coincides with New Year’s Eve.

The 14-night Australia Intensive Voyage from Perth to Melbourne with Azamara Cruises (0344 4934016) departs December 21 2023 & December 20 2024 and costs from £2,859pp. Excludes flights.

Over the top

Nobody is more qualified to share Australia’s stories than its traditional owners and custodians. On a voyage through remote Barrier Reef islands en route to Cape York and Arnhem Land, you will meet indigenous Torres Strait islanders and other Aboriginal peoples to experience their culture, art and homelands, including Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. Along the way, spy dugongs, turtles, saltwater crocodiles and the birdlife of Kakadu’s wetlands.

A 13-night Australia's Top End cruise from Cairns to Darwin with Scenic (0808 273 6069; scenic.co.uk ) departs April 28 2024 and costs from £11,108pp. Excludes flights.

Murray river flow

River cruises are rare down under, making an active experience on the mighty Murray – the nation’s principal waterway – all the more remarkable. Murray River Trails offers short cruises aboard a 12-berth houseboat, with a daily programme of guided walks and activities. The small-group, into-the-wild nature of the experience lends itself to wildlife encounters, with sightings of echidnas, emus, koalas and unusual native birds all possible. It is a fascinating insight into authentic inland Australia.

The three-night Murray River Walk departs May–Sep and costs from £1,500pp. Excludes flights.

Kim and swim

The Kimberley may have beguiling blue waters, but dips in the sea are foolhardy (and forbidden) due to the dangerous saltwater crocodiles that call the region home. Sidestep that inconvenience on a voyage with Ponant, which combines classic Kimberley elements (Montgomery Reef, Horizontal Falls) with the little-visited Rowley Shoals – one of the world’s most sensational snorkelling and diving destinations. Located west of Broome, in the Timor Sea, these croc-free coral atolls brim with colourful sea life.

An eight-night cruise round-trip from Broome departs September 8 2023 and costs from £11,835pp through Mundy Adventures (020 7399 7630; mundyadventures.co.uk ); includes flights.

Queensland immersion

Take a deep dive down under on a Great Barrier Reef & Beyond itinerary with Windstar Cruises. This holiday is particularly good for wildlife-lovers. Look out for wedge-tailed shearwaters, sooty terns and noddies while passing Willis Island; spot dingoes on sandy Fraser Island; and cuddle a koala at Australia Zoo (established by the late Steve Irwin). Show-stopping Whitehaven Beach is an unforgettable trip highlight.

An 11-night sailing from Cairns to Melbourne with Windstar Cruises (0808 178 2233; windstarcruises.com ) departs December 6 2023 and costs from £7,499pp. Includes flights and pre-cruise overnight in Cairns.

Western wonders

Unlike the Barrier Reef, which clings to the continental shelf, magnificent Ningaloo Reef fringes Western Australia’s coast. Discover it and the archipelagos of Abrolhos, Monte Bello and Dampier on a small-ship expedition that mixes snorkelling and shipwrecks with whale-watching and indigenous rock art. Enhance the experience by foraging and fishing for mud crabs and oysters, or take sightseeing to new heights in the ship’s helicopter.

How to do it

The 10-night West Coast Explorer cruise with True North sails from Fremantle to Dampier on March 7 2024 and costs from £12,208pp. Excludes flights

Island state

Raw nature meets colonial history and premium produce in Tasmania, not to mention one-of-a-kind wildlife such as white wallabies and Tasmanian devils. Sip local cool-climate wines and visit the likes of Bruny Island and Wineglass Bay while sailing from Hobart. The cruise is complemented with a self-drive exploration of the island’s west and north coast regions.

A 17-night holiday with Tasmanian Odyssey (01534 735449) combining Coral Expeditions' 10-night Coastal Wilds or Coastal Treks cruise with a 7-night self-drive land tour costs from £5,475pp. Departs Jan–Feb 2024 & 2025; excludes flights.

All the way

Go all out and see more of the continent on a full circumnavigation of the vast island. Sail the Coral, Timor and Tasman Seas, the Indian Ocean and the Great Australian Bight on an odyssey starting and finishing in Sydney. Travelling via every coastal state and territory, ports of call include cosmopolitan Melbourne, tropical Darwin, lively Fremantle and Phillip Island with its unforgettable koala and penguin encounters.

A 34-night Australian Panorama sailing with Oceania Cruises is available through Mundy Cruising (020 7399 7670; mundycruising.co.uk ) from £8,729pp, including flights. Departs December 22 2024.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

small boat kimberley cruises

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
