Marco De Vincenzo’s Magical Mystery Tour
The designer puts a fantastical new spin on the house of Etro.
What happens to fashion when it’s sprinkled with a puff of pixie dust? The house of Etro, synonymous with finely tailored caftans, layers of paisley chiffon, and billowing beach ensembles, was long the wardrobe for high-toned hippies traveling the world. But with Marco De Vincenzo, the brand’s first creative director from outside the Etro family, the Italian fashion house is going on a very different journey—a trip to a dream world of the designer’s own imagination.
“My vision has always been about fairy-tale fashion,” says De Vincenzo, surrounded by racks of his hallucinogenic-print creations at the brand’s Milan headquarters. His method? Start with the familiar and warp it into something more chimerical, and more startling. Case in point: a clog transformed from humble to fantastical with a towering platform and heel accented by a curlicue toe. In his debut show for spring 2023, models carried chain mesh mini-bags containing an odd piece of cargo: an apple, conjuring for De Vincenzo the magical world of Disney’s Snow White , his desert-island movie pick.
.css-1aear8u:before{margin:0 auto 0.9375rem;width:34px;height:25px;content:'';display:block;background-repeat:no-repeat;}.loaded .css-1aear8u:before{background-image:url(/_assets/design-tokens/elle/static/images/quote.fddce92.svg);} .css-1bvxk2j{font-family:SaolDisplay,SaolDisplay-fallback,SaolDisplay-roboto,SaolDisplay-local,Georgia,Times,serif;font-size:1.625rem;font-weight:normal;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;margin-bottom:0.3125rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 40.625rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.2;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 73.75rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-1bvxk2j b,.css-1bvxk2j strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1bvxk2j em,.css-1bvxk2j i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;}.css-1bvxk2j i,.css-1bvxk2j em{font-style:italic;} The dimension of dreams is my foundation for Etro.”
“When I was young, children in southern Italy didn’t have that much to play with,” says the 44-year-old Sicilian designer, twisting his tousled hair. “So I grew up just having my imagination.” He wears a vintage sweater emblazoned with a schmaltzy puppy face across the chest and cartoon dog bones up the sleeves. “Fashion should never lose touch with playfulness,” he says, smiling. There are other designers creating fashion that’s “deeply rooted in reality, and it’s beautiful, but that’s not me,” he notes with clear eyes. “The dimension of dreams is my foundation for Etro.”
Though the creative director position marks his first such role at a major fashion house, De Vincenzo is a vaunted figure in the industry, having served for two decades at Fendi, where he remains the head designer of leather goods. (Prominently seated in the front row at his Etro runway premiere was the Fendi team, including Silvia Venturini Fendi and Chairman and CEO Serge Brunschwig.) And with his namesake brand, founded in 2009, he’s built a reputation for off-kilter clothes with never-before-seen surfaces—layering prints, prism effects, and sequins of every kind.
Etro, founded in 1968 by Gerolamo “Gimmo” Etro, originated as a textile manufacturer. The enterprise later introduced ready-to-wear inspired by the Etro clan’s globe-trotting lifestyle, and it remained a boho, family-designed affair in recent decades, with its fashion arm helmed by Gimmo’s son Kean and daughter Veronica. De Vincenzo, conscious of the intense scrutiny around his inaugural collection, didn’t shy away from shocking the crowd. The first look on the runway elicited a small gasp from the audience: Against the backdrop of a psychedelic catwalk, a model paced by in an itty-bitty jacquard denim bra top and matching jeans, whose extra-large legs obscured skyscraper platform shoes. It was a getup more suited to a trippy teen rave than the Bali bungalows of old Etro. There followed Wicked Witch-worthy capes in tapestry and macramé lace, and striped shirts sticking out below the hem of miniskirts. There were patterns of birds, cherries, and gardens—not a paisley swirl in sight—that De Vincenzo found in the house’s extensive archive of antique fabrics dating back to the 1700s, which he shrank to miniature size or blew up to uncanny proportions, à la Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland . It was all enough to make the eyes twirl in their sockets, casting exactly the spell of unreality that De Vincenzo desired.
Perhaps just as head-spinning was the time frame De Vincenzo was tasked with: three weeks to completely design his debut collection and present the first glimpse of the new Etro to the world. “I married without really knowing my spouse—it was like one of those antiquated Sicilian stories of arranged weddings,” he says of the rushed courtship, from the announcement of his appointment last June to finalizing his designs for production by July, before Italy closed down for its annual summer holidays. Yet he had time to consider Etro beyond its past of flou and paisley, unearthing English-style stripes (“the preppy part” of Etro, he calls them) and rich jacquards that would inspire his ode to the brand’s textile foundations. The paisleys, he would like to reassure the world, are returning in upcoming collections. “The next step,” the designer says, picking up a newly finished leather basket bag with the brand’s Pegasus logo, “will be to unite my universe with Etro’s.”
He shows off another purse: the Love Trotter, a style produced in collaboration with Mytheresa, with recycled-plastic handles and surplus Etro fabrics. Its initial run of 200 bags represents De Vincenzo’s first nod to upcycling and sustainability at Etro, to be expanded in future seasons with more bags and limited-edition garments from salvaged stock materials. For his own brand last year, De Vincenzo introduced Supérno, a collection of vintage clothing made new with extreme embellishments of crystals and rivets. The reuse of existing materials “is the way forward,” insists De Vincenzo—a down-to-earth observation from the designer set on taking Etro to fairyland.

Specifically Paul’s shirt from the “ I Am The Walrus ” video
Where can I get that shirt! It looks so amazing. Who made it?
It might have just been what was in fashion… Or perhaps it came from the Apple boutique?

Was it The Fool? They were designing and working with the Beatles at that time.
Edit : According to here it was.
The Fool also designed clothes The Beatles wore in ‘ I Am The Walrus ‘ clip in Magical Mystery Tour .
And also on Pintrest (you may need to have to sign in to access the page)

I was assuming The Fool, but I didn’t want to say anything without knowing for sure.

I'm Necko. I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.
I'm also ewe2 on weekends.
If the opportunity arises, and I can muster up the courage, I could ask them about the clothes. There might be an anecdote or two about the designing process…

Great idea, JPM-Fangirl. We want a full report.

I assume it’s a different brand though. Does The Dutch The Fool have a web site?
JPM-Fangirl said One of the people from The Fool is going to be at the Beat Meet, which apparently is an international event, to be held in the Dutch city of Leiden on the 26th of this month. Since it’s only thirty minutes or so by train, I intend to go and have a look at all the stuff I can’t buy If the opportunity arises, and I can muster up the courage, I could ask them about the clothes. There might be an anecdote or two about the designing process…
If you could ask I would be most appreciative to know. Maybe ask if they have a website and would consider bringing a Magical Mystery Tour inspired line for the 50th anniversary next year . . ya, everybody loves anniversaries and I’m sure they’d love a reminder 🙂
This is rather cool to see. A good sample of The Fool’s art and designs.
I found this article about the clothes and items sold at The Beatles’ Apple Boutique store – http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10……html?_r=0

don-w I’ve asked whether or not Barry Finch will take questions, explaining about the things you wanted to know. They’ve replied, saying the questions were very interesting and they’ll quite likely include them in the interview. They did state that reproductions are probably not available, since the clothes were handmade.
^You’re a rockstar, @Mademoiselle Kitty >^..^<. I can’t wait for the report on his responses!

I’ve been able to confirm that the shirt was indeed made by The Fool collective
Also found some information on their boutique store

I bet a Beatles pop-up shop would be a successful venture, I’d imagine one popping up in Los Angeles would get a lot of foot traffic. I wonder what their ultimate plan was for the stores. Imagine if they had started their own music distribution network by setting shops in more cities
Don.W said Imagine if they had started their own music distribution network by setting shops in more cities
What an interesting thought. I for one, would revel in buying all of my music from Zapple.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
I had an identical shirt to Ringo’s I bought for about a dollar from an op shop many years ago.

The Bruins’ survival, the Maple Leafs’ heartbreak, and other final thoughts from an absurd first-round series
So, hockey being what hockey is, often a front-row ticket in the theatre of the absurd, the Bruins escaped with a dramatic, Garden-roof-lifting win in Game 7 Saturday night and advanced to Round 2 of their Stanley Cup 2024 magical mystery tour.
The series favorite entering Game 1 Monday night in Sunrise, Fla.: No question, the Panthers. They’re rested, they’re slick, they’re brassy, fashioning a style that general manager Bill Zito recently labeled “graceful brutality.”
Oh, how the Bruins of decades ago would have chewed through their leather gloves, wooden Sherwoods, and empty cans of ‘Gansett to swashbuckle into a best-of-seven series framed in brutality. The word alone summons images of a stuffed dummy, stitched in Pat Quinn’s likeness, hanging from the old Garden’s second balcony.
They were brutal, magnificent times, and how we loved them.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs left Causeway Street in the wee hours of Sunday morning still in search of their first Stanley Cup since ‘67. The big wheel of time keeps on turnin’, and forever flattening Southern Ontario’s long-faded dynasty.
Tied at 1-1, the Leafs chose an inopportune time for their five skaters to suffer sudden-onset narcolepsy, allowing David Pastrnak to free-fly into the offensive zone, collect a carom off the rear wall, and pot the series-clincher only 1:54 into overtime. No one in a blue sweater put so much as a pinkie on Pastrnak.
For the record, it was the third-fastest conclusion to a Game 7 in Stanley Cup playoff history. If you were late getting back to your seat at the Garden, you missed an old-fashioned dump-in by Hampus Lindholm and a backhand-forehand-backhand finish extraordinaire by Pastrnak.
But don’t fret, because all five Leafs skaters missed the whole thing, too. Ditto for their goalie, backup-turned-starter Ilya Samsonov, who was so buttoned to his goal line as the play unfolded that it’s rumored it took three master tailors from Eastern Clothing until dawn to unstitch him from the ice, toss him in a suit bag, and drag him to the team bus. Again, just a rumor.
In the end, simplicity won out for the Bruins. The execution worked with an efficiency one might expect to see put an end to a sleepy Monday morning scrimmage in, say, mid-February. Which is also to say: Man, the Leafs got hosed on a play that had to be humiliating, especially given that the defensively culpable included franchise defenseman Morgan Rielly, and primo forwards John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander.
The collective cap hit for those four starting next season: $40.9 million.
It’s likely Sheldon Keefe will be handed his walking papers for a fourth one-and-done playoff run in his five years as bench boss. That’s a body of work that would get most coaches fired, all the more likely when it extends a franchise’s run of Cup futility to 57 years.
Yet while true that coaches get only so many kicks at the can, Keefe shouldn’t have to answer for the final ugly sequence. That’s on the on-ice personnel.
The Bruins, who likely saved Jim Montgomery’s job on that same play, advanced to Round 2 for the first time since 2021, a win that spring over the Capitals (followed by a loss to the Islanders).
Consider how the Bruins closed out the Leafs after owning a 3-1 series lead. They:
▪ Were outscored, 5-4, over the final three games.
▪ Never worked with a lead in Game 5, 6, or 7.
▪ Were outshot, 90-82, over the final three games, and outshot the Leafs only once all series.
▪ Were awarded only four power plays over the final three games, failing to score on all four advantages, while the Leafs were even worse (0 for 7).
▪ Managed only three shots on net combined in the first periods of Games 5 and 6.
▪ Continued to lose territorial advantage (zone time) as Game 7 played out, and allowed the Leafs repeated prime scoring chances over the final two periods.
In short, it was headed in the wrong direction — and to a familiar conclusion — until the team in white and blue blacked out as Lindholm fired the puck toward the right corner. The Hail Mary-like play left the Leafs again without a Stanley Cup prayer. Lindholm should have been denied the dump attempt. Pastrnak should have been marked, followed, and sent up Staniford Street.
For Leafs fans, it was an all-too-painful reminder of Game 7s vs. the Bruins in 2013, 2018, and 2019. After falling into the 3-1 deficit this time, it again was trending the right way for the Leafs, they were … right … there ... until they were bedeviled and dispatched by the Bruins one more time.
But, hey, hockey. Such is the romance and soul-crushing absurdity of the game. Today’s favorite often becomes the next day’s underdog. The team with momentum and traction just for a second looks into the rearview mirror and slams full-speed into a brick wall. So many ways to win, and forever at least an equal number of ways to lose.
The one constant for the Bruins was their goalie, Jeremy Swayman, who made his bones in this series as a bona fide No. 1 (there was a question?) and possibly that rare Cup cornerstone. Swayman finished 4-2 with a 1.49 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage, numbers that approach the hallowed Tim Thomas 2011 space. Most every Cup champ needs its goaltending to be a constant difference maker. That was Swayman in Round 1.
“I think [Swayman] was our best player in the series and it’s not close,” Montgomery mused as Sunday dawned and the Garden “Bull Gang” swept up the ice shavings. “I think his confidence and his swagger permeated through the group. It took a while. But it got there.”
Roll up, the ‘24 Bruins magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away.
Next stop: Sunrise, Round 2, with the odds decidedly against the Bruins, and hockey being what hockey is, the stage forever absurd.
