Rummikub Strategy, Tricks, Tips, FAQs and More

Rummikub has been around a long time, its first iterations were around since the 50s; the version most familiar to us these days has been around since 1977. If we really want to go further, we could say that Rummikub was based on a series of card games from the 1800s. The bottom line is that it has been around a while and as such people have had quite a long time to figure out Rummikub strategy. That is not to say this is an all-encompassing guide, but rather some helpful tips, some more advanced strategies and also some FAQs about the game.

Table of Contents

There’s nothing wrong with picking up, destroy duplicates, 1s and 13s are weak, keeping your tiles close to your chest vs opening up the play, risk mitigation in rummikub, advanced runs and melds strategy, rummikub joker rules, rummikub pronunciation, how many tiles are in rummikub, how many tiles do you start with in rummikub, how to play rummikub with cards, how to win at rummikub, what is the origin of rummikub, summing up rummikub strategy.

Newer players especially will be quite keen to place tiles as soon as they are able. While not an inherently a bad idea the question is why do it? Rummikub is – and so are many other board games for that matter – about thinking forward and the next steps . How will this run or three of a kind help me? If all that you are doing is ensuring that you will not pick up this round the likelihood is that you will pick up next round anyway.

Rummikub Strategy play slow

In fact, picking up can be a good thing, it gives you more possible combinations to play from on the table and the more you pick up the more likely you are to pick up a Joker which are very, very helpful in emptying your rack.

A good rule of thumb is to pick until you do not think you need to pick again, be able to play 4-5 turns worth from your rack without going to the pouch. Rummikub is self-described as a “slow” game in the beginning few turns – take your time. It is potentially round ruining if you are close to finishing and then pick up a hard to play duplicate tile because you had not planned far enough ahead.

Rummikub Strategy is a marathin not a sprint

We have just recommended that you pick as much as possible in the beginning, but that will of course lead you to picking duplicates. A few duplicates are manageable, it is ok to keep picking, but by your third duplicate it is probably time to stop. Every duplicate after your third is a killer and if you end up with four or five it is unlikely you will be able to win the round.

They always say there are exceptions to the rule and destroying duplicates is one of them. If you can lay a singular or multiple duplicate in any turn, do it and forego drawing a tile.

1s and 13s are strange tiles and very polarized. 13 tiles are the best to open because they help you crack that 30 point requisite barrier early; 1s are good because if you are stuck with them at the end of the round you lose fewer and your opponent gains fewer points.

However, past these two instances, the very beginning and very end, 1s and 13s are not very good. This is because in traditional Rummikub rules, the tiles cannot be interchangeably high or low and cannot wrap around. By this we mean you cannot have 12, 13, 1 or 13, 1, 2 as combinations. As such there are less possible ways to use 13s and 1s – there’s actually 6 less ways to use these tiles across 12 possible tiles. In Rummikub you want as much freedom as possible. If you are able to ditch weak tiles, go for it!

rummikub travel tile size

There are two different core Rummikub strategies, but both should be used in the game as the situation demands it.

First, we have established that the key to success in Rummikub is having as many options as possible. That key is both for you and your opponent. If you are able to reduce the number of options for your opponent, they are less likely to win. You can do this in a few different ways:

  • Play slowly, if you need to place down, only place one individual tile, or one set, rather than many.
  • Box your opponent in on certain runs, you can use a weak 1 or 13 to try and reduce the number of options for your opponent. In a run of a red 1, 2, and 3, the only card your opponent can place on the end of it is a red 4, rather than open ended options. In addition, if there is already a run of say 7 red, orange and black, on the board a strong move could be to place the exact same run of 3 numbers and 3 colours. By doing this, your opponent has no further options than they did before, but you are still getting rid of tiles. If you can’t get an exact match, try to overlap as much as possible, say red 6, 7 and 8.

Rummikub Strategy is about being careful what you play

The second core strategy is opening the play. If everyone plays close to their chest nothing can get done. Sometimes you need core tiles that you simply can’t draw from the pouch because someone already has it. If you need a blue 9, for example, you can encourage it to be laid by placing 9 red, black and orange. Maybe another player has that 9 as a duplicate they are desperate to get rid of and will put it on your set with pleasure.

Basically Rummikub strategy comes down to: what am I trying to achieve with my next move? As a general rule of thumb, sets of three of a kind open the play because there are now more colours available for people to pick from. Runs, on the other hand, close the play, they are more rigid and can only benefit cards higher or lowert han a run.

When the round is coming to an end and you think that you are going to lose all of the above rules go out of the window. It is all about reducing as much risk as possible from your rack. Remember, Rummikub is played over three rounds and is a marathon, not a sprint.

If you feel like another player is going to empty their rack soon there is no shame in admitting defeat. Get rid of every-thing! Especially Jokers because they give -30 points if they are in your hand at the end of the round. Go again, learn if you made any mistakes and beat them in the next round.

Rummikub Strategy is about minimizing risl

Advanced Rummikub strategy is all about breaking established sets or runs and creating new ones. The creativity and imagination required by players should not be understated. The strategy below requires established sets, for example, 4, 4, 4 , 5 ,5, 5 to work. Essentially it involves turning these sets into runs because the colours match appropriately and any mismatched colours being deposited in other parts of the board.

This strategy requires quite an advanced table state because you need options to be able to pull it off effectively.

Here is some advanced Rummikub Strategy

There are a few different rules regarding Jokers, we will detail them below:

  • The Joker can be used as any tile
  • If used to open, a Joker has the value of the tile it represents, for example, if you place down 10 Red, 10 Orange, the Joker would have a value of 10 also.
  • Jokers can be retrieved if a tile with the same numerical and colour value is used to replace it. In a group of three either colour can be used to replace the Joker.
  • The retrieved Joker must be used in the same turn in a new set.
  • Losing players that still have a Joker in their rack at the end of the round receive -30 penalty points.

Rummikub is pronounced “Ruh-me-cube” – the game was popularised in Israel and examples of the pronunciation are in the following video. Rummikub – The Israeli Game which Became an International Sensation

106: There are 104 basic tiles, 2 sets of numbers 1 to 13 in four suits: orange, black, red, blue. Additionally, there 2 two Joker tiles.

Players begin with 14 tiles.

Interestingly, Rummikub was originally a card game coming from the Machiavelli card games family in central and southern Europe. To do this, you need two standard decks of 52 cards, for 104, plus two Jokers. Instead of drawing a new tile from the pouch, you simply draw the top card of the deck.

You should assign the regular cards the following values:

A player wins the round after clearing their rack of tiles and calling “Rummikub”. Losing players add up the totals of their tiles and take this as a minus score. The round winner takes the total of the losers’ scores and gets a positive score for the round equal to it. The scoring table might look something a bit like this:

The winner is the player with the highest total after three rounds. On losing rounds its best to try and lose by as few points as possible. It sounds like an obvious statement, but it is less points for you to make up in the next round and it is less points for your opponent!

Rummikub was invented by Ephraim Hertzano . He enjoyed card games of the Machiavelli family that were popular throughout central and southern Europe. However, under the Romanian communist regime in which he lived, card playing was banned. Hertzano then decided to replace cards with tiles so he could continue to play the games he enjoyed.

If we had to sum up Rummikub strategy in one sentence it would be: understand why you are doing an action. What will this action lead to? Will it open up the play in a positive way, for your opponents? Or will it increase the likelihood of you getting that one desperately needed tile. Sometimes games of Rummikub don’t go the way you want, while there is a great deal of skill involved, there is also luck – both good and bad. If an opponent is getting every tile they need there is no shame in abandoning this round and starting from tile one in the next.

Pronounced rummy cube, Rummikub is a fun and strategic board game that pits two to four players against each other. Players attempt to get rid of tiles by matching them up into groups of the same number or consecutive numbers. This game has been around for almost 100 years and remains an extremely popular board game played by families around the world.

In this article, we will be diving into the rules of Rummikub so that you can learn how to play this simple and entertaining board game that you could play with your family for hours on end!

THE HISTORY OF RUMMIKUB

Rummikub has a fascinating history that’s worth getting to know. This game was introduced to the Western world by its inventor, Ephraim Hertzano. Tile rummy was introduced in response to religious and legal sanctions on card games like rummy due to their association with gambling. It is believed to have been conceived in the 1930s or 1940s in Romania and has since gained international success, becoming one of the 10 best-selling games in the world. Sabra Rummikub is the only variation of Rummikub included in recent versions of the game and is the version described below.

If you want to play a similar game with a deck of cards, check out these rummy card games .

So, without further ado, let’s go over the rules and how to play the beloved board game of Rummikub.

SETUP FOR RUMMIKUB

rummikub travel tile size

Here’s how to set up a game of Rummikub before you get this fun game started!

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

Rummikub includes 106 tiles, including two jokers. The tiles are either black, red, yellow, or blue and contain the numbers 1 through 13.

To start, shuffle all the tiles face down. Then, each player picks one tile, and the player with the higher number goes first. Play then passes clockwise or anti-clockwise, depending on how you want to play.

All players must return their tile. Then, each player takes 14 random tiles. Players place their tiles on their rack in a way that they are hidden from other players. All remaining tiles must remain face down on the table to form a pool. It’s best to keep several stacks of this pool to draw from next to players rather than in the middle of the table.

HOW TO PLAY RUMMIKUB

rummikub travel tile size

The goal of Rummikub is to form groups or runs of different tile combinations in order to get rid of all your tiles or as many tiles as possible (in order to have the lowest value hand). When you form a group or run in Rummikub, you can place the tiles face up on the table.

Okay, but before we really dive into the rules, it’s first important to understand what groups and runs are. These are potential combinations of tiles:

  • Group : 3 or 4 tiles of the same number but different colors.
  • Run : 3 or more numbers in a sequence of the same color.

Note that you can only count tiles in a single combination and cannot be used in multiple groups or runs.

STARTING THE GAME

Choose a player to start the game. This player must either form a combination or draw a tile.

The first combination a player plays has a specific rule to keep in mind. From their 14 tiles, a player must play a combination (at least 3 tiles to form a group or run) that equals a total value of 30 or more points. If a player uses a joker in the initial set, its point value is the tile it represents. This is how a player “buys in” to the game. For example, in order to start playing, a player may lay down four blue tiles numbered 8, 9, 10, and 11.

If a player is unable to buy into the game, they must draw a tile to end their turn.

After a player either buys in or draws a tile, the next player does the same.

After a player lays down their first combination, on future turns, they can then play any tile or tiles that they can add to any existing groups or runs. Confused? Don’t worry! We’ll get into this now.

When playing tiles, players can either create a new combination , add on to an existing combination, or rearrange the tiles to form a new combination . If a player is unable to play anything, they must draw a tile .

CREATING A NEW COMBINATION

After you buy into the game, you can now play whatever tiles you want in your rack without having to worry about anything adding up to 30. In other words, you can start slowly getting rid of all your tiles! One way to do this is to create a new combination. You can put down any combination, even if it doesn’t add to 30. Place any new combinations down on the table face-up for the other players to see.

Examples of combinations include a group that consists of a blue 4, a red 4, and a yellow 4. Or a run that consists of a yellow 2, yellow 3, and yellow 4.

ADDING TO AN EXISTING COMBINATION

You are not restricted to playing on only your own tiles. Any player can add tiles to an existing combination on the table.

For example, if a player has played the combination red 7, red 8, and red 9 and you have the tiles red 6 and red 10, you can add these to the combination to make 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

In the same way, if there is an existing combination of 8, 8, 8 (note: they must be all different colors) and you have another 8-tile in a different color, you can add it to the existing combination.

REARRANGING AN EXISTING COMBINATION

You can also rearrange existing combinations by adding your own tiles and creating new combinations. If you rearrange the tiles, you must use all the tiles from the existing combination. You can separate the tiles into a couple of different combinations. Just remember that all combinations must contain at least 3 tiles.

Here is an example of rearranging Rummikub tiles:

rummikub travel tile size

Your Hand : You have 5, 6, 8 tiles in blue and a 7 in red.

Existing Combo : On the board, there is an existing combination of three 7s in black, blue, and yellow.

New Combos : On your turn, you can take the blue 7, combine it with your blue, 5, 6, and 8 to create a 4-tile run, and add your red seven to the remaining two 7s in the existing combination.

rummikub travel tile size

DRAWING TILES

If you cannot add any tiles to the table using any of the methods above, you must draw a tile from the pool. Your turn is over, and play passes to the next player. You may not play a tile directly after drawing it.

An interesting rule for Rummikub is the time limit. Due to the complexity and numerous amount of possible rearrangements, there is a time limit imposed on turns: 2 minutes.

Any player who goes over the 2-minute limit must take a tile as a penalty.

And if a player reaches the time limit before successfully rearranging the tiles into valid combinations, they must return all the tiles to the configuration it was in when the turn began. Players must also return their played tiles back to their rack and draw three tiles.

So, basically, play everything you can within two minutes !

RUMMIKUB JOKER RULES

There are two joker tiles in Rummikub that essentially function as wild cards. If you draw a joker, you can use it to fill in a blank space of a combination. The joker tile can represent any number or color. For example, if you have 5, 6, and 8 in color, you can use a joker tile to fill in for the 7.

You can also add to existing combinations with jokers, but you cannot move or rearrange the tiles from a joker combination. The only way you can take a joker from a combination is to replace the joker with the tile it is supposed to represent. So, in the example above of a 5, 6, joker, and 8 combination, if you have the 7 of that color, you can then take the joker.

However, the caveat is that you must play the joker immediately. You cannot take it for future use.

Additional Rummikub joker rules include:

  • If you have not yet played your first set, you cannot take the joker from the table.
  • If you have a joker in your rack at the end of the game, it has a penalty value of 30 points. So, use it when you have it!

rummikub travel tile size

The scoring rules for Rummikub can get a bit confusing, so pay attention!

The first player to play all their tiles on their rack yells, “Rummikub,” and ends the round with a score of 0. All other players must sum the total of their remaining tiles on their rack – as mentioned, jokers count for 30 points! These scores are then totaled as a negative amount.

So, if a player still has a 7 and 4 on their rack, they have a total of -11 points! And if another player still has an 11, 3, and joker on their rack, they have -44 points.

On the other hand, the winner of the round gets a positive score that is equal to the total of every other player’s points.

This means in the example above, the winner has a total of 55 points, while the other two players have -11 and -44 points.

If the pool of tiles runs dry before any players run out of tiles on their rack, play continues until no player can play any more tiles. In this case, the player with the lowest tile total is the winner. Then, each player subtracts the winner’s total from their tile value and turns it into a negative score.

For example, if the winner has a 3 left on their rack at the end of the game, each player must subtract 3 from whatever they have left on their board. So, if one player has an 8 and 2, their score would be a 7 turned into a negative value, which would be -7. The winner’s total score would be the total of all the negative scores turned into a positive number. So, if the losing players scored -7, -3, and -11, the winner’s score would be 21.

After you score the round, mix up all the tiles and put them to the side once again to begin the next round, starting from the top!

END OF GAME

Keep playing a new round of Rummikub until a player reaches a predetermined score that players agree to at the beginning of the game. Each player should calculate their negative and positive points after each round, and the player who reaches the target score first wins!

Here are a few variations of rules in Rummikub if you want to spice things up a bit:

  • Play can move either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
  • If you replace a joker in a group combination, some rules state that you should play both missing colors to the group before you can get the joker.
  • Jokers may value 25 points as opposed to 30 when left on the rack during scoring.

How Many Total Rummikub Tiles Are There?

There are a total of 106 tiles in Rummikub. This includes 104 numbered tiles, from 1 to 13, and colored blue, black, yellow, or red, as well as 2 jokers.

Can You Play Rummikub with 2 Players?

Yes, definitely! You can play Rummikub with as few as 2 players and as many as 4! The best thing is that this board game is just as fun with 2 people as it is with 3 or 4.

How Many Rummikub Tiles Do You Start with?

According to official Rummikub rules, you start with 14 random tiles, which you should arrange on your rack.

We are a family who really enjoy games. We have a whole cupboard under the stairs full of board games and card games. From family classics to newer and more unusual games we have a variety and always make sure we play at least one game every weekend. We are all rather competitive! As we enjoy games so much we also have a collection of travel games so we can play when we go on holidays and short breaks away. Recently many family classics including Monopoly, Guess Who and Scrabble have been made into smaller, compact versions ideal for travelling.

One game we have not ever played, neither the standard nor travel version, is Rummikub. So we were excited to get our hands on the Rummikub travel edition this week as we love something new to play. Rummikub travel is made by Ideal games. It is for 2-4 players and suitable for 7+ years. The game arrived in a small cardboard box, definitely an ideal size for packing for a holiday but perhaps too big for a rucksack to be able to play on the go or whilst travelling.

My first impression when we opened the box was that it looked a bit complicated! There are a large number of small plastic tiles with numbers on and a lengthy instruction and rule booklet. Also included are four racks and rack holders to place the tiles on. So I had a look at the instructions and got my eight year old to have a read through too. After a couple of read throughs we found the game was simpler than we thought to learn.

The main object of the game is to play all the tiles on your rack by forming them into sets of either groups or runs. The tiles are all placed on the table and mixed up and then players take it in turns to play tiles onto the sets until they are gone then the next round starts. The winner is whoever has won the most rounds. I liked that the game is fast paced as there is a one minute time limit per turn. Also before playing you decide how many rounds you are going to play. Therefore you can have a short game or a long game depending on how much time you have available. We soon got into playing and had mastered how to play after a few rounds. We found us adults enjoyed playing as much as the children did.

Overall we really enjoyed this game. Having never played before we thought it was really fun for families with older children. There are some great tactical ways to play against each other. However, considering there are a lot of small pieces and the tiles all need to be spread out on the table I don’t think this works very well as a travel game.

Rummikub – Deluxe Travel Edition

$ 44.90 $ 39.90

The game, Rummikub , is based on the traditional middle-eastern game of Okey. First created in the 1930s and sold in hand-produced versions until the late 1970s.

Similar to the Rummy that you play with cards – you try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 tiles or more, or 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers on the tiles are like card suits. This game may start rather uneventfully, but when the players start putting more and more tiles in play, the options for your upcoming turns can become more complex, challenging, and exciting (from areyougame.com).

This deluxe travel set comes with a durable canvas bag and includes 106 playing tiles, 4 plastic tile-holder racks, and complete instructions.

Rummikub Six-Player Special Edition Game Review

Is six players a party or a problem.

rummikub travel tile size

Just getting the box in the mail was a delight.

I don’t normally send pictures of review copies to my family, but this box was special: Goliath Games/Pressman Games released an updated version of Rummikub , titled Rummikub Six Player Special Edition , which ups the player count from the traditional 2-4 players. This special edition is the same as all the other versions of the game I have ever owned—this will be the 4th copy I or my family have had over the years—save for one distinct update:

But we’ll get to those later. My wife and I played a quick game of Rummikub Six Player Special Edition (which we will refer to as just Rummikub 6 for the rest of this review) when it first arrived, just to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything. Placing an initial meld, rearranging tiles on the table, finding the best way to use a joker tile…it all came back like riding a bike for the 1,000th time.

That was all fine. But how does it play with 6 people at the table?

rummikub travel tile size

This Game is 40 Years Old???

If you don’t know how to play Rummikub , or if you’ve never heard of Rummikub , talk to your extended family or just go on a family vacation sometime soon. SOMEBODY will know it, or still plays Rummikub regularly. I polled about 20 people in my various gaming groups and most everyone had played Rummikub at some point in their gaming travels.

It also helps if you have played Gin Rummy , since lots of those elements appear in card form elsewhere. Rummikub (pronounced “rummy cube”) just replaces the cards with sturdy tiles placed on a personal rack in front of each player.

All of the elements of how the base game plays are intact here in Rummikub 6 . You still need to lay down 30 or more points in your initial meld to play to the table. You still have about a minute to take your turn moving tiles around to try and place a tile from your rack onto the table. There are still 4 colors used for the suits: orange, red, blue and black. You still total up points based on the tiles left on your rack if another player goes out, and when someone gets to a predetermined amount (usually 100 at my family outings), whoever has the lowest score wins.

There’s still nothing as satisfying as moving around a bunch of tiles on the board to place that one final tile from your rack to win.

The only difference in the latest iteration of Rummikub 6 is the 6-player max count. Even though I played with my new Rummikub 6 set a few times after it first arrived, I had to wait until the Christmas holidays to travel to my family home in Rochester, NY to play with a full 6 players. Finally, I can play with my wife, parents, and siblings all at once, and that was what allowed me to put the finishing touches on this review.

Even at 6 players, Rummikub 6 does not disappoint. I was worried about the downtime with a full player count, but that is mitigated by having so many more places to play tiles. The games we played at 6 felt a little shorter because 4 or 5 of us were able to get the initial melds on the table quickly, and there was always just enough of a drip of new places to play tiles that each turn felt fresh.

You really have to enforce the 60-second time limit at 6 players, though. There’s always one person at the table who seems to take too long or try to maneuver a bunch of tiles around to accommodate a single tile placement from their rack; use a timer with 6 players, for sure!

Rummikub 6 comes with 160 tiles, whereas the original came with 106 tiles for 4 players. So, you are getting an extra set of 52 tiles in the 4 base colors, plus another set of jokers. Beyond that, there are no rules updates in this special edition to worry about, so it’s the same old Rummikub , just scaled up to a larger count. (If you are playing this new version with 4 or less players, you play with the original 106 tiles.)

These New Racks Are Solid!!

Everyone has a story of the time they were about to win a round of Rummikub , when in their excitement to put tiles on the table, they knocked over their rack with the two plastic pegs in the back of the tray, spilling tiles everywhere.

Goliath/Pressman fixed the only issue left with a standard game of Rummikub . They replaced the racks of the “olden times” by taking away stands that have slots for plastic pegs on the back, and replacing those with firm blue stands that can hold 3 rows of tiles.

These racks can’t fall over. They hold more tiles. They look better on the table. They still keep your tiles secret from the other players. They pack easily into the core box.

From every single angle, these are a big win. My only question: why did it take the world so long to come up with these?

The new racks and the thinner tiles used in Rummikub 6 add a really nice feel to the overall production of the game. Now I don’t have to go to a place like Etsy to find someone who really puts care into producing nicer tiles with better calligraphy on fancier racks, although if you want to spend real money on a nice set that is still an option.

Rummikub, Refreshed

A few times a year, Rummikub makes an appearance at a family gathering or over the holiday season. Rummikub Six Player Special Edition is perfect for anyone looking to update their original copy of the game or players new to the family. The rules are straightforward and even at smaller player counts, the game continues to shine just as brightly as before thanks to the simple design update to the production of the racks. I love this game!

We always play in the evening. With the lights on you can see through the tiles so you can easily see what the person across from you has in their rack. Also the orange and red are very difficult to distinguish without daytime level light. My original game tiles were at least two times as thick and you definitely can’t see through them. The solution for these tiles is the old racks that you have complained about in this review. That being said, Rummikub is by far my favorite game.

The problem with these racks are you can see how many tiles are left. I like the element of surprise.

You can fix that by making a “wall” of thick cardboard open on one side. We do that when we play Mexican Train. But because not everyone chooses to use the “wall”, everyone has to say “one” when they have one tile left. If they forget, they have to draw a tile.
