Preservation remains central to Richmond’s character, particularly when it comes to museums and architecture, but this is also a destination that continues to push for change and support new ideas. “It’s not the same Richmond,” says Kelli S. Lemon, a social entrepreneur, community activist, and owner of Urban Hang Suite . She encourages visitors to “come with an open mind of seeing something new” and understand that Richmond is “not what we were known for [in the past], but what we are now.” It’s this multi-faceted, dynamic nature, forever rooted in a sense of place, that makes the city so enticing — and even more transformative. “Be careful,” warns Bill Martin, director of The Valentine , “Richmond… might change you.” 

As Martin tells Travel + Leisure , Richmond is “filled with the powerful stories of people who created our nation and with a variety of experiences where you will find your own story.” Whether your journey includes a walk along the James River, an afternoon browsing the exhibits at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), or several hours laughing with a friend over dinner in Church Hill, you’re bound to leave with a newfound appreciation of this storied Southern city. The Jefferson

“There’s nothing like staying at The Jefferson ,” says Lemon. The 181-room historic property is the most regal hotel in Richmond, with a history that dates back to 1895. Upon entering the Palm Court lobby, your eyes are immediately drawn upward to the colorful stained glass ceiling; the impressive architecture continues throughout the common areas, most notably into the Rotunda. One of the dining areas for the popular Champagne Sunday Brunch (which requires reservations made well in advance), the Rotunda is outfitted with Corinthian columns, a resplendent staircase, and decor that harkens back to the Gilded Age.

There are touches of this design style in the traditionally decorated guest rooms and suites, but they don’t feel overly heavy or outdated, thanks to a full-scale renovation that took place from 2013 to 2017. To complete the experience, guests will want to dine at the hotel’s restaurant (and local favorite) Lemaire . “Be sure to order the peanut soup or the pimento cheese for a taste of Richmond,” says Jeanita Harris, The Jefferson’s director of guest services.   

Quirk Hotel 

Recommended by both Lemon and Martin, Quirk Hotel is the younger, more modern accommodation option in town. Opened in 2015, the property aims to be a destination “where art and history intersect.” That means you’ll find original artwork throughout the property (which was built as the J.B. Mosby & Co. Dry Goods Store in 1916) —  from the bright guest rooms to the on-site gallery. Before a big day of exploring Richmond, fuel up at The Coffee Bar, then return to The Lobby Bar or Q Rooftop Bar for pre-dinner cocktails. 

Graduate Richmond

Richmond may be a big city, but it’s also a college town. The University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, and Randolph Macon College are all located within the greater Richmond area, so it makes sense that the Graduate Hotels brand would have an outpost in the city. Along with its cozy rooms and a fitness center, Graduate Richmond has an outdoor pool, a rooftop cocktail bar, and an all-day café and bar.

Visiting Richmond’s museums is at the top of Martin’s must-do list. “Of course, start with The Valentine for your introduction to the region’s history,” he says, “Then the options are limitless: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts , Virginia Museum of History & Culture , Maymont , Science Museum of Virginia , Children’s Museum of Richmond , The American Civil War Museum , and Agecroft Hall & Gardens .”

Spend a day along the glorious James River.

“The James River runs right through downtown,” says Harris, who adds that visitors can choose from the “excitement of class four rapids, a leisurely float down the river in a tube, or a hike along the miles of nature trails.” For rafting, tubing, and kayaking trips, check out Riverside Outfitters . Martin also suggests a more relaxing activity of simply “packing a lunch and finding a rock;” you’ll find a number of large picnic-perfect rocks around Belle Isle .

Take a tour of the Virginia State Capitol.

Free one-hour tours are offered throughout the week at the Virginia State Capitol, located in the aptly named Capitol District. “The tours are about 45 minutes long, and the knowledgeable docents provide a wonderful introduction to Richmond and Virginia history,” says Harris. Plus, she notes, it’s home to a life-size statue of George Washington, which is said to be one of the most accurate depictions of the historic figure. 

Discover local artists and musicians. 

Richmond’s creativity isn’t just relegated to one neighborhood or one category. Rather, it takes on a variety of shapes throughout the city. To admire and shop for locally made artwork, check out Art Works , Iridian Gallery (which focuses on works by LGBTQ+ artists), Arts in the Park (a free outdoor event that takes place in May), Eric Schindler Gallery , or the Crossroads Arts Center . Richmond’s music scene is equally diverse and impressive. To see which performances align with your travels, follow local venues — like The Camel , The Canal Club , or The Broadberry — and local bands and performers — including Cleophus James , Butcher Brown , and The Shack Band .

The Roosevelt

While Martin says pinpointing just one or two top Richmond restaurants is “impossible,” he does mention The Roosevelt (along with Grisette) is one of his neighborhood favorites. Here, Chef Leah Branch brings her own touch to Southern cuisine, with a menu consisting of delicacies like cornbread with whipped maple butter, fried catfish, and tobacco-smoked pork butt. 

There are regular cheese and charcuterie boards, and then there are the expertly curated cheese and charcuterie boards at Grisette . The thoughtful, cozy space is open for dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays, and reservations are recommended. Fair warning, though: You’ll want to avoid filling up on meats and cheeses. It’s crucial to save a bit of room for the fan-favorite profiteroles.  

“Located in the charming Church Hill neighborhood, this is a favorite recommendation for guests interested in seafood. The cocktails are tasty as well,” says Harris. Alewife ’s signature sampler platter, the Siren’s Song, is a classic, although the menu does change weekly. 

Floris at VMFA

After making your rounds through the VMFA’s exhibits — don’t miss the extensive Fabergé collection — it’ll be time for afternoon tea at Floris . The museum’s tearoom features a rotating menu that takes inspiration from the neighboring collections, and the atmosphere and structure are akin to a British afternoon tea. It’s elegant without being stuffy, and the $45 tea service comes with pastries, sweet treats, and savory bites. 

You’ll want to come hungry to Mama J’s , a family-owned restaurant in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. Think fried chicken, crab cakes, pork chops, brisket sandwiches, and a whole host of delicious sides — macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and seafood salad included. 

“ Carytown is a favorite area for local shopping,” says Harris. The mile-long stretch of Cary St. is filled with various one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops — and you could spend hours popping in and out of the storefronts. “Guests always come back with lots of shopping bags from World of Mirth , Ten Thousand Villages , For The Love of Chocolate , Traveling Chic Boutique , and GlassBoat ,” she explains. 

Shops at Libbie and Grove

In Richmond’s West End neighborhood, you’ll find a collection of boutiques and gourmet eateries all located along Libbie, Grove, and Patterson Avenues. To update your wardrobe, there’s Nellie George , Peter-Blair , the Shops at 5807 , and Jean Theory . To refresh your home, browse the selections at Fraîche , Gild and Ash , and Beckon Home .

According to Harris, the best time of year to visit Richmond is the fall: “The weather is perfect for going to the river, [or] exploring the city by bicycle, Segway, or on foot.” Plus, she says, “The cooler temperatures also make for pleasant evenings out to enjoy Richmond’s vibrant nightlife.” Spring is also a beautiful time to visit; the daffodils, cherry blossoms, tulips, magnolias, and azaleas are blooming at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden — and you’ll be able to avoid summer’s muggy weather and larger crowds.

How to Get There 

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is one of the larger airports in the state of Virginia, and it’s served by nine major air carriers — including Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, and United. The airport is only about 10 miles from downtown Richmond, so travelers should factor in about a 15- to 20-minute drive between the two. Uber and Lyft rides are readily available for pickup. Alternatively, Richmond is home to two Amtrak stations; the Main Street Station is located downtown while the Staples Mill Road Station is eight miles northwest of downtown (you’ll need to take a cab to get into the city). 

“Richmond is a city of neighborhoods,” says Martin, and Lemon adds that it’s important for travelers to “go into the local neighborhoods, talk to the people [who] have lived there for a long time, see the architecture, [and] see the local businesses that have been there for years.” 

Church Hill

“Church Hill is home to St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry gave his famous ‘Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death’ speech, and the architecture and attractions take you back in time,” says Harris. If you’re hungry while in the area, snag a freshly baked treat at Sub Rosa Bakery . 

Jackson Ward

Jackson Ward, a historically Black neighborhood in Richmond, is filled with important cultural and historical markers — including the home of Maggie L. Walker (the country’s first Black female bank president), the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia , and a statue of American tap dancer Bill Robinson. Cuisine in the area is also first-rate, so definitely add Adarra , Mama J’s, and Penny’s Wine Shop to your trip itinerary. 

Scott’s Addition

If you’re interested in a brewery crawl, there’s only one place to go: Scott’s Addition . The area is packed with taprooms, cideries, and distilleries — most of which are located in repurposed warehouses. Consider starting your tour at Bingo Beer Co. , Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop , or Three Notch'd Brewing .

The Fan District

“The Fan, given its name by the streets that ‘fan out,’ is filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and museums,” says Harris. It’s in this part of the city where you’ll find the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, as well as Monument Avenue, the picturesque boulevard featuring stunning homes and the Arthur Ashe Monument (Ashe was a native of Richmond.)

Manchester 

“Another area to explore is Manchester along Hull Street. This neighborhood has its own unique history and is one of the fastest-growing parts of the city with local food favorites like Croaker’s Spot ,” says Martin. 

Brookland Park Boulevard

“I would also recommend exploring the Brookland Park Boulevard (Barton Heights and Highland Park) area,” says Martin. “In these early streetcar neighborhoods, you will find great architecture, history, and small local businesses and restaurants — don’t miss Ruby Scoop’s Ice Cream !”

There are a few ways to explore Richmond. Having a car is helpful, particularly if you plan to cover a lot of ground in one day (just be prepared to test your parallel parking skills). Biking is also a great way to get around the city; Riverside Cycling and The Kickstand both offer half-day and full-day rentals. 

There’s also the local bus system, operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company, and the GRTC Pulse route is an excellent option for visitors. The “high-capacity bus rapid transit system,” as it’s called, serves a nearly eight-mile route along Main Street and Broad Street. How to hear Virginia’s ‘forgotten’ history along the James River

Two Virginia men are hoping to change that.

Will Smith and Will Cash, or the Wills (as they’re often called), bring customers aboard a replica of an 18th century batteau. While the word borrows from the French term for “boat” (bateau), the vessels were mostly used in North America as freight haulers during the colonial period.

The Wills hope to share the largely forgotten history of the boatmen who built a community on the James River.

“There was a lot of people that put a lot of work in, whose stories are disappearing all the time,” Smith, 36, told WTOP. “We see ourselves as being able to carry that torch on, making sure people … are able to really take that in and understand the state as it is today.”

The river tours set out from Scottsville, Virginia, a small town just south of Charlottesville.

During the early 1700s to mid-1800s, batteaux were navigated mostly by enslaved and freedmen who transported goods, oftentimes tobacco, from Virginia’s Piedmont to the markets in Richmond.

The men would then row back up the river, hauling goods that plantation owners wouldn’t otherwise have easy access to, such as coffee, tea, molasses and sugar.

Smith and Cash are longtime friends. They co-own the James River Batteau Company , offering river cruises with light acoustic music and flavorful charcuterie in the afternoon and at sunset. The pair rows groups of customers while retelling the stories of the batteaumen who spent their time on the same passageway.

Nancy Gill, a former mayor of Scottsville and the host of the James River Podcast, is somewhat of a superfan. She’s taken three tours with the Wills.

“You don’t get from a history class or a textbook, what you get going out on the river with them,” Gill said.

‘The Cadillac experience of being out on the river’

James River batteaux are typically around 7.5 feet wide and 45 feet long — for reference, that’s a bit longer than your average telephone pole.

That skinny, narrow build makes for a relatively stable, dry cruise down the river, Smith said, when compared to a canoe or raft that run the risk of tipping over.

“This is more or less the Cadillac experience of being out on the river,” Smith said.

The two white-oak batteaux the company uses are built by hand.

“You can’t exactly just go to the batteau store these days and go pick one up,” Smith said.

The Wills are the company’s only employees. The two build the boats themselves and handle all other responsibilities like marketing the tours and checking water levels before bringing guests out on the river.

The build process takes two months.

“We are literally fashioning every piece of the boat from the ribs to the stem pieces (and) the planking ourselves,” Smith said.

They use oakum to create a watertight seam on the boats as a finishing touch.

Summertime floating down the James River

On the tours, Smith recounts the history while he poles the boat down a middle portion of the James. When they’ve strapped two wooden vessels together — which allows for more guests — Cash quietly dashes along the opposite of the batteaux, pole in hand, providing the necessary manpower to steer.

After delivering the oral history, Smith strums the guitar and sings as the day fades away, much in the same way as the batteaumen who would play music while poling up and down the very same portion of the river centuries ago, he said.

It’s picturesque. Floating down the James River in Virginia on a warm summer day, you can expect to spot fish and turtles in the crystal clear water below. Sycamore trees line the riverbanks. Occasionally, you can spot a bald eagle.

“The boat itself also folds you into the scene in the way that being on a plastic boat doesn’t,” he said. “When you see the batteau on the river, it just looks like it’s in its natural habitat and you’re there with it.”

What really catches people’s attention on the tours though, isn’t the sights, he said — it’s the quietness.

“That’s one of the things we find our guests really react to,” he said, adding that many guests come from urban areas like D.C. or Northern Virginia. “Just being out on the river and hearing nothing but birdsong all of a sudden puts people in a very relaxed state.”

How the batteau ‘transformed’ virginia.

The batteau was invented in 1775 in Albemarle County, where Smith grew up.

“These James River batteaux completely transformed the face of Virginia,” Smith said. “There was no way for people that were living in the interior of the state to sell their product, until you had a boat capable of shipping that product to the ports of Richmond.”

That was a gamechanger.

“The men that actually worked on these boats are really what facilitated all of that economic activity that kind of grew up and created the cities and towns we live in today,” Smith said.

The boatmen transported heavy loads year-round at times in tough conditions, only stopping for ice or low water. There’s no shade on board and little protection from the rain.

At times, the journey was treacherous.

The enslaved men who piloted the boats would be gone from the plantation for months at a time. As a result of their long journeys, Smith said they were often afforded more trust and independence than people working in the fields.

“Explaining their role in the settlement of Virginia’s Piedmont is a story that we want all Virginians and anyone joining our tour to know,” Smith said of the boatmen.

A century later, batteaux found buried in mud spark curiosity

In the mid-1800s, batteaux were replaced by canalboats. With that, the history of the batteaumen largely vanished for more than a century.

“That changed in 1985, when several boats were discovered in downtown Richmond buried under the mud,” Smith said. “These boats sparked a resurgence and an interest in batteaux.”

The discovery of the vessels led to the first ever James River Batteau Festival later that same year. During the yearly event, groups build replica batteaux and pilot them 120 miles from Lynchburg to Richmond on a similar route as the batteaumen did 200 years ago. Hundreds of people in kayaks and canoes join on the eight-day journey with around 10 to 15 handmade batteaux.

In some spots along the river, including Scottsville, people crowd along the river when the group arrives and departs.

The festival is how Smith tipped his toe in batteau.

“My father built his first boat the year I was born in 1987,” he said. “I grew up coming down to the batteau festival and floating on the boat for a day.”

As teenagers, the Wills got involved in the festival. Smith captained his first boat in 2006, the year after he graduated from high school.

“We were the only ones on planet Earth floating down a batteau,” he said. “It was just about as unique as anything you could get involved with.”

After nearly 20 years of navigating the James, the men started giving batteau tours in 2022.

Connecting the dots in Va. history

The tour, Smith said, “connects the dots” between the role of tobacco and the settlement of the Piedmont for attendees.

Most people they come across don’t know much, if anything at all, about batteaumen. Some of that, Smith said, could be attributed to the sheer volume of Virginia history.

“I’m standing here in Scottsville, Virginia,” he said. “You drive 25 minutes up the road, Charlottesville, and there’s Monticello. Virginia, especially 17 to 1800s Virginia, just has a massive amount of history to cover.”

That’s the “generous” way to look at it, he said, but another explanation has more to do with the subjects of the stories.

“These being enslaved African Americans or freedmen of that time, we don’t have a lot of their stories that we end up celebrating as much in Virginia,” he said. “I think the fact that this was their story is one reason it’s been forgotten.”

That vision resonates with Virginians like the former mayor Gill, who was first exposed to batteaux upon moving to Scottsville in 1999 — but she said the tour gave her a more in-depth understanding of the James River’s role in Virginia’s settlement.

“It was a verbal history and almost a re-enactment of that history that brought the lessons home for me,” she said of the tour. “We really need to pay attention to our history, and what got us to where we are today. They tell that story about central Virginia so well.”

ORLANDO, Fla. – By the time Franz Wagner finished outscoring Cleveland by himself in the third quarter, what had been a competitive game turned into another rout in this series between the Orlando Magic and Cavaliers.

Wagner had 34 points and 13 rebounds, and the Magic held the Cavaliers scoreless for a second-half stretch of almost seven minutes, cruising to a 112-89 victory Saturday that tied the Eastern Conference first-round series at 2-2.

After putting up 60 points in the first half, Cleveland was outscored 37-10 in the third quarter and managed only 29 points in the second half.

Asked if he had ever seen a more dominant defensive quarter, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said: “I'd have to look that one up.”

Wagner had 10 points in the first five minutes of the third quarter and finished with 12 in the period, when the Cavaliers missed 14 of their 18 shots.

"Once we came back from that nine-point deficit starting the third, and they took that timeout, I felt like OK, the momentum is swinging in our direction," Magic big man Jonathan Isaac said.

It never swung back.

Game 4 of the series will be Tuesday night in Cleveland, where the No. 4-seeded Cavaliers won the first two by double digits before getting blown out twice in Florida.

“They held home court just like we did,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “Now we get an opportunity to go home and play a best-of-three series with two games in Cleveland. We’ve got areas where we can change some things, fix some things, but I know our guys will be ready to go on Tuesday night.”

Isaac (14 points, seven rebounds, two blocks) and Markelle Fultz (12 points, four rebounds) gave the Magic major help off the bench. Paolo Banchero, who had 35 points in Orlando's 121-83 win in Game 3 on Thursday night, finished with nine points and five assists in his first single-digit scoring game since Nov. 29.

Jarrett Allen had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Cavaliers. Donovan Mitchell had 18 points, all in the first half.

“Ten points (in a quarter) is outrageous,” Donovan said. “We have to be better. I have to be better. I’m disappointed in myself, so it’s on me. You can’t have 18 points in the first half and zero in the second, and only four shots.”

Including the games in this series, the Magic have won six straight at home while losing six straight on the road.

“We’re not satisfied at all,” Wagner said. “We just got two wins. We need two more against them so we’ve got to stay locked in and try to get the next one in Cleveland.”

Wagner opened the second half by converting a Cleveland turnover into a layup and hitting a jump shot from the free throw line. He added a 3-pointer and a three-point play on a five-minute, 17-6 run that put Orlando up 68-67.

“Obviously he’s incredible,” said Wagner's brother Mo, who contributed seven points and four rebounds. "His awareness, his control of the game is just great. He started off the game distributing the ball and let the game come to him.

“I’ve got to drive home with him so I want to keep it in check. I don’t want to exaggerate here, but that was one of the best games I’ve seen him play.”

The Magic finished the quarter with 14 straight points, and three straight baskets by Franz Wagner stretched their lead to 24 early in the fourth quarter.

Max Strus' 3-pointer with 5:26 left in the third quarter accounted for the Cavs' final points of the period. They did not score again until Caris LeVert's jumper with 10:40 left in the fourth.

“They protected home court and we’ve got to do the same thing. It’s as simple as that,” said Mitchell, whose big finish to the first half put the Cavaliers up 60-51.

The game included several minor skirmishes, including a Jalen Suggs-Darius Garland face-to-face confrontation and a fourth-quarter flagrant foul on Strus for holding up Cole Anthony on a dunk attempt.

I will never use Budget Air to purchase flight again and disappointed in EVA’s refusal to help. Thankfully just under 12 hrs before departure someone from the agency was available to reissue tickets. I was starting to think we would not be flying and the stress trying to resolve was completely unacceptable.

We received the luggage after 48 hours, many of which spent holding with non-existent United customer service. Never able to speak to an actual person during those long phone calls. Finally on a chatline I could talk to a baggage agent, who filed another report as our luggage did not appear anywhere in their system. Thus it was surprising to get it back.

I got upgraded, so comfort was not an issue. But as always, it is the people from baggage handlers, flight attendants, pilots etc. that make the difference.

There was a male flight attendant who seemed like he was VERY upset the entire flight. At one point I went to the back of the flight with my 1 year old to get some space in an empty row, (she was not making noise) and he was sitting in a row where he could see us. He started huffing and puffing and throwing a tantrum, throwing the window shade up and down, and we were very uncomfortable. My husband also had a weird experience with him. I just don't think he should be flying when under such stress.
