Tunisia tours & vacations
Straddling Africa and the Middle East, this once-overlooked Mediterranean gem is well and truly back on the map
From the sun-drenched beaches of the north to the lunar-like desert of the south – and all the caves, mountains and palm-fringed oases in between – Tunisia has a unique allure. It’s not often you can clock Roman ruins this grand, get lost in a maze of medinas and learn age-old pastry recipes with a beloved local baker in their home. Many people think of Tunisia as a seaside holiday destination, and while its glittering Mediterranean beaches are definitely something to write home about, there’s so much more to discover in this diverse country.

Learn more about Tunisia
Best time to visit tunisia.
Tunisia boasts a Mediterranean climate in the north and an arid, desert-like climate in the south. The busiest months are July and August when the hot weather draws tourists to the beaches.
The coldest and wettest months are January and February, although the average rainfall for this period is still relatively low; many interior Saharan regions of Tunisia don't see rainfall for years.
March to May is a great time to visit as it's less crowded, the temperatures are cooler and the scenery is spectacular. November is considered the optimal time for trekking in the desert.
You may also want to factor in the holy month of Ramadan (the dates of which change yearly). Traveling during Ramadan presents benefits and challenges as many restaurants close and business hours can be interrupted. That said, it's a great opportunity to learn about the local culture and customs.
Culture and customs
Tunisia is an Arabic country with a strong sense of history and tradition, yet a good dose of modernity. The overwhelming majority are Arabic-speaking Muslims; nine in ten Tunisians are Amazigh (Berber), with the remainder a mix of European, African and Arab peoples.
These days social and political life in Tunisia is mostly secular. Since the Arab Spring – a region-wide revolutionary movement sparked in 2010 by the Tunisian Revolution – the Tunisians have enjoyed more religious and social freedom and greater democracy. Still, when traveling, it’s important to keep in mind the country’s Islamic culture. If Ramadan is on, be careful not to drink or smoke in the public presence of those practicing it.
Family is an important part of Tunisian life and a good topic of conversation when meeting new acquaintances. Wearing a headscarf is not necessary for women traveling in Tunisia (unless visiting mosques), but it pays to dress conservatively. Language-wise, French and Arabic are the officials, but English is increasingly prevalent – children are nowadays taught it at school.
Eating and drinking
Tunisian cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean, French, Italian, Turkish and Amazigh (Berber) influences. Seafood is popular in coastal areas in the north, while hearty regional classics like shakshouka (baked eggs in tomato) are common all over.
Two major staples of Tunisian cuisine are harissa (a spicy chili paste made with coriander and caraway seeds) and couscous (buttery semolina granules) which are also popular in neighboring countries like Morocco.
Must-try foods in Tunisia
Translating to couscous, this is Tunisia's national dish. The Amazigh people are thought to have created it as far back as the 3rd century. A simple yet delicious plate of seasoned couscous is usually accompanied by baked vegetables and chickpeas, or by beef, lamb or chicken.
2. Brik pastry
Brik, or 'brick', pastry comes in sweet and savory forms, but you'll likely stumble on the egg and meat-filled kind first. Though its name may suggest otherwise, the dough is relatively thin and delicate. You'll find this snack at street stalls across the country.
Not to be confused with the Moroccan version (that’s very different), Tunisian tajine is similar to a quiche or frittata – more of a European-style finger food. Typical ingredients are onions, spices and ground meat, all held together with egg and breadcrumbs and flavored with herbs and spices.
A fantastic option for vegetarians, lablabi is a hearty chickpea soup with liberal doses of cumin and coriander. Tuna or egg are sometimes added for extra punch, and some harissa doesn’t go astray. Capers or chopped almonds sometimes top the dish off.
5. Bambalouni (Tunisian doughnut)
Sweet toothed-travelers shouldn’t miss the ‘yo-yo’, also known as a bambalouni, or simply Tunisian doughnut. Deep fried, but with the subtlety of so many other sweets from the region, it’s often lightly flavored by rose water, orange blossom or lemon.
Geography and environment
Sandwiched between Libya and Algeria, Tunisia benefits from its location on the Mediterranean Coast. The south is characterized by arid plains and desert, which give way to rolling hills and fertile areas prime for cultivation in the north.
With a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia has plenty of white sand beaches that are popular with swimmers, surfers and divers. Tunisia's capital and largest city, Tunis, is mostly modern in design, except for the old medieval medina in the middle of town.
Tunisia is a treat for those who love to haggle the North African way. The country has many souqs and medinas where you can get a great price on local and authentic items. Shop for endemic spices, blown-glass perfume bottles, traditional ceramics and more.
You may like to purchase a Tunisian rug, which will be truly evocative of your stay in the region. Kairouan is a particularly good place to shop for a rug. Just look out for the ONAT (Office National de l’Artisanat Tunisien) stamp of approval on the back of your rug before you buy it to ensure it’s authentic.
A traditional Arabic shisha, also known as a hookah, is also worth considering as a souvenir. It’s the apparatus used to smoke the characteristic flavored tobacco of the Middle East . It’s not for everyone, of course, but travelers are known to buy them for their aesthetic qualities alone.
Festivals and events
International festival of sousse.
This three-week festival brings together a miscellanea of arts from across the country. See performances, eat African cuisine and enjoy the biggest carnival parade in Africa .
Festival of the Sahara
Held in Douz in the heart of the namesake desert, Festival of the Sahara started as a Bedouin marriage market but became a full-blown celebration of arts, culture and sports in the region. There’s delicious food, military parades, greyhound racing and much more.
Ulysses Festival
The legendary Greek king Ulysses is said to have immortalized the island of Djerba when he visited thousands of years ago. The island hosts this festival every year with cultural events and performances from across the Mediterranean.

In days gone by Fondouk El Attarine was a caravanserai where travelling salesmen used to station their caravans and beasts in order to rest after a long day’s journeying. Today, this magnificent bright edifice houses a luxury souk selling artisan jewelry, carpets and other handicrafts together with an elegant restaurant set in the fondouk’s luminous square patio. Today’s travellers can restore their energy with a healthy selection of typical Tunisian dishes including fresh mixed salads, fish tajines and pomegranate desserts. El Ali ’s restaurant, serving typical Tunisian dishes, is housed in a covered courtyard with light pouring through the windows bordering the high roof. A literary café on the upper level of the building is a relaxing place for enjoying a book and soaking up the culture of Tunisia. This level leads up to a roof terrace with superb harmonious views looking over historical Medina with its mosques on one side and the Saint Vincent de Paul cathedral on the other.

Dar El Jeld
Dar El Jeld is a veritable museum of beautiful tiled walls, ornate wrought iron railings and a fine collection of Ottoman carpets rolled out across the floors. All echoing the regal ambience of the original 18th century mansion, which was transformed into a restaurant in 1987. Elegant tables await some of the best traditional food in Tunis, including the customary bricks and a host of other copious hors d’oeuvres, succulent grilled kebabs, whole grilled fish, and fish or lamb couscous. All food is accompanied by the sound of time-honoured music enhancing the authentic ambiance of old Tunis. Situated near the Kasbah and among the souks, Dar El Jeld also sells leather babouches, organic Tunisian oil and many other folkloric types of merchandise.
Dar El Jeld, 5 Dar El Jeld street, Tunis +216 71 560 916
Dar Zarrouk
Located in the cliff top coastal village of Sidi Bou Saïd, about twenty kilometers from Tunis, Dar Zarrouk blends in with the typical dazzling white villas and their blue shutters. Its terrace is an ideal spot for enjoying magnificent views of the crystal blue Mediterranean. The sophisticated interior also looks out on the Gulf of Tunis, and with its marble floors and ornately tiled walls is a place to relish a moment of calm. Likewise, the high rating ‘three fork’ food at Dar Zarrouk is a relishing experience offering a deluxe menu of freshly caught fish and imaginative variations on traditional dishes.
Dar Zarrouk, Rue Hédi Zarrouk, Sidi-Bou-Saïd +216 71 740 591
It is not easy to find Essaraya , a sumptuous restored palace hidden in the Medina’s labyrinth of souks. So it is opportune to come across a man clad in traditional attire and bearing a lantern waiting to guide clients to the restaurant’s entrance that opens into an enchanting fairytale décor. Essaraya is where dignitaries of old used to be closely waited on. Today the waiting staff follows in the footsteps of their forefathers never missing a detail as they serve guests in the various dining areas that range from open rooms to private alcoves. The menu covers the classics, including marka h’loua, sweet and sour lamb gently cooked with prunes, chestnuts, raisins and almonds, or kabkabou , a tasty fish stew. An interesting selection of desserts should not be missed before being guided back to present day Tunis.
Essaraya, 6 Rue Ben Mahmoud Boulevard Bab Menara, Tunis +216 71 560 310
Le Grand Café du Théâtre
Neighbouring the beautiful Art Nouveau architecture of the national theatre, Le Grand Café du Théâtre spreads across the wide pavement of the famous Avenue Habib Bourguiba, justifiably likened to the Parisian Champs-Elysées. Locals gather under the parasols of the vast terrace to drink coffee while observing the hustle and bustle of the busy avenue, or to sample the generous choice of European style snacks including freshly made pasta, pancakes, pizzas and sandwiches. The menu also proposes a selection of brasserie style food, another reminder of the influence of French culture that is omnipresent on this European side of Tunis.
Le Grand Café du Théâtre, Avenue Habib Bourguiba , Tunis +216 71 334 186
La Tavolata
For an authentic taste of Italy in Tunis, it is worth leaving the city centre for the residential suburb of Ennasr. Here all that is Italian can be found on a plate. From the chef’s succulent pizza cooked on the premises and garnished with Italian mozzarella to a variety of pasta dishes and risottos. The amazing fresh fruit desserts make the trip all the more worthwhile along with the friendly welcome from the staff. La Tavolata ’s lighthearted ambiance is reflected in the humoristic paintings adorning the walls including a new take on Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
La Tavolata, Avenue Hedi Nouira, Ennasr II, Tunis +216 71 829 202
Au Bon Vieux Temps
Far from being a chain, Au Bon Vieux Temps boasts two of the best restaurants in Tunis situated in the coastal resorts of La Marsa and Sidi Bou Saïd. The branch in La Marsa can be reached by rail and is conveniently situated opposite the station. Italian cuisine is a focus of the menu, complemented by fresh fish and excellent steak. The Sidi Bou Saïd branch lies on a cobbled street in the heights of Tunis. Its claim to fame is the passage of the renowned French author André Gide who resided here during the Second World War. The menu proposes a mouthwatering blend of authentic Tunisian and modern French cuisine reflecting a long history of two cultures.

Tunisia Discovery, Small Group Tour
It was a beautiful experience. The guide Mahjoub and driver Zachary were very professional. The guide told us many things about history and culture and was kind and always tried to adjust to the group exigencies. Some of the hotels were really nice, pity we could not enjoy a bit of time by the beach in some of the destinations. Definitely I want to come back to explore more of this beautiful and warming country. We felt safe all during the trip and Mahjoub always chose restaurants and bars for the stops that were very clean (especially the toilets). There is a bit of drive in some of the days but all worth, plus the minibus was very comfortable to get some relax between one destination and the other. Also Ekbet from the travel agency was always supportive remotely. Thanks and see you again!
Highlights of Tunisia, Small Group Tour
We had a wonderful visit to Tunisia, Radlwuane is a excellent and knowledgable guide and Jemel did a great job keeping us safe on the roads. The sites we visited were impressive filled with plenty of history going back thousands of years. Carthage was a highlight from a historical point of view, unfortunately there is not a lot left to see. El Jem wasalso a spectacular highlight.

Desert Tour Kairouan to El Jem 3D/ 2N
The tour guide was knowledgeable and on time for everything. However, the printed itinerary did not match where the guide took us or in the same order. Fortunately, the guide took us to a place not on the itinerary -- the Hotel Sidi Idriss, where the first Star Wars movie was filmed -- and that was fantastic. It was a great surprise to stop there, although it shouldn't have been a surprise and should have been on the itinerary. Also, at some points the guide, who also served as the driver, seemed like he'd done the tour a million times and was a bit bored.

Tunisia Tour, Small Group Tour
Great driver and guide. Rooms good. Food was often cold and limited.
Immersive Tunisia, Small Group Tour
a really great itinerary that avoids most of the typical group tour cliches (carpet store, jewelry factory, dinner with cultural dancing...). it felt a little more authentic and less driven to spend money. many types of ruins that highlight Tunisia's varied history, sometimes it can be a little too much too quickly because you're hopping around millennia at each stop. I did get confused, but fortunately had a wonderful couple also on the tour who were open to teaching me along with the guide. There were only 4 of us on this tour; same group, guide and driver throughout. There were a couple of city tours but this itinerary really concentrates on ruins. I really enjoyed the walking, almost hiking, we did at some locations to see a mix of reconstructed and more natural ruins. some language barrier issues and translation issues more than I've had with some countries/tours, but made it quirky and an experience. Felt completely safe and well looked after. The driver and guide did an exceptional job making sure my mother was comfortable and taken care of if she ever looked out of place. The people and company also reacted well to all the COVID stuff so we were able to fly in/out mostly stress-free. The hotels were not always the best, maybe the rooms were run down because of lack of tourism. None of the hotels were well situated to wander; they were far from city center. On the plus side each day was busy enough we didn't have a lot of free time (energy) to wander, but it would be nice to have had the option. Recommend, if possible, to request a different hotel in Tunis, for both cleanliness and location. Really enjoyed this country, the tour, and the people. Highly recommend for anyone on the fence.
The Best of Tunisia & All-inclusive Beach Extension (Stay connected), Small Group Tour
Ann and I had a fabulous time. Radwan and Jamal picked us up at the airport. We saw some amazing sites over the next four days from Berber living quarters to Roman and Punic ruins (including the largest Roman city in Africa). Those first four days were packed from pre-dawn to evening. Radwan was really an amazing tour guide. He was at the top of his college class and chose to become a tour guide because of his pride in his country and the desire to tell others the story. Jamal was an excellent driver. He knew exactly where to go and how to get there quickly and safely. The last four days were relaxing at a 5-star resort, and it was the perfect way to rest and recover before heading home. One quick note, many of our friends were concerned about safety in Tunisia, and I can say honestly that Ann and I felt completely safe the whole time we were there. The people of Tunisia were welcoming and friendly. The last four days we went on foot all over the local city and enjoyed the people and the culture. I give this tour my highest recommendation.
Step Back into the Millennium, Small Group Tour
Tunisia is a fantastic collection of culture, architectural sites and filled with history. I was alone on this tour adding some flexibility but also complications. I do recommend Tunisia, you won’t be disappointed.
What people love about Tunisia Tours
The tour was very interesting and versatile, well organized
Good tour covering key attractions in Tunisia. Could have been excellent if Tatouine (Yes, it is a real place in Tunisia and inspired George Lucas to use that name in Star Wars!) were included in the itinerary as it has very unique buildings (warehouses) that warrant a visit. There are gaps in the program especially the first day that could accommodate this attraction with some juggling.
