At home in the New York City suburbs, Oscar Sandoval has lots of friends and an active social life. But when it’s time for vacation, he prefers to keep it quiet. Like, literally.

Sandoval began practicing Zen Buddhism a few years back and has been on silent retreats to Buddhist monasteries around San Francisco and elsewhere. He’d stroll, sit, do some gardening and generally contemplate life for a week. More recently, he’s done solo backpacking trips across Spain.

“The internal experience varies from times of very little thinking to periods of many thoughts or songs playing in my head,” he said. “The utter peace and stillness is impossible to put into words.”

Travel journalist Chloe Berge bemoaned the buzzing interruption of a drone while she was hiking the Faroe Islands’ remote coastline during the pandemic. “The world is getting louder, and it’s increasingly harder to escape the noise, even in nature.”

But it’s worth a try, say the travelers who are seeking relief in silence. Or as close as they can get to it.

From serene nature retreats to silent walking, the quest for quietude has become one of modern travel’s latest trends. Conde Nast Traveler said last month it was “the travel trend we’re most obsessed with this year.”

For many, quiet travel goes beyond escaping the cacophony of everyday life while on vacation. It can be a shift toward introspection, a deeper connection with where we are both literally and figuratively.

You might even feel healthier.

In a study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry in late 2022, for instance, mindfulness meditation worked as well as a standard drug for treating anxiety.

“Transformative travel’s a trend we’re tracking for growth,” said Alex Hawkins, editor at the trend forecaster and consultancy The Future Laboratory. “It taps into consumers’ desire for self-reflective tourism experiences.”

The “wellness tourism industry,” he said, includes “demand for hyper-personal holidays and health-driven stays.”

Peaceful pampering

The company Dark Retreats Oregon offers a five-day “Dark Retreat” in Tidewater, Ore., as “a great space for self-care” through darkness, digital detox and a healthy diet. Participants can keep the lights off as much as they want during their stay, and can also decide how much they talk to others.

BookRetreats, which urges clients to “Unplug. De-stress. Recharge,” offers silent meditation retreats in Bali, Portugal, Mexico and the Netherlands, and closer to home in North Carolina, Quebec and California.

Finland’s Utula Nature offers a silent stay amid the pines on Lake Saimaa, about five hours from Helsinki.

Serene strolling

Ditching the phone, zipping your lip and putting on your comfy hikers — that’s the silent walking trend that’s found thousands of friends on TikTok.

Gordon Hempton is an acoustic ecologist in Washington state also known as The Sound Tracker. He’s spent several decades roaming rainforests, coastlines and deserts seeking out interesting and often rare nature sounds — sounds you can’t easily hear when there’s a lot of human-made noise. “I care very deeply about quiet,” he said.

He’s a co-founder of Quiet Parks International, a nonprofit created to raise awareness of the benefits of less noise for both people and wildlife. Ecuador’s Zabalo River park was the first to receive quiet park designation — it’s not technically “quiet,” of course: Howler monkeys, birds, insects and the thrum of the river provide a natural soundtrack. But the nearest concentration of human activity is a village of roughly 200 people, about 10 miles away.

There are even a couple of urban areas designated as quiet parks — one just outside the bustling metropolis of Taipei, Taiwan’s capital. Another is in Hampstead Heath, about 30 miles from central London. The grassy, 800-acre park inspired C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

Quiet Parks International offers experiences such as forest bathing, where you open your senses to the meditative and relaxing elements of a walk in the woods.

For those who can’t get out to nature, the Quiet Parks website has recordings of wildlife and weather in the rainforest, morning in the West Texas desert and sounds of day and nightfall in northern Alaska.

Low-key lost

Black Tomato’s got an interesting proposition for you. The avant-garde travel company offers a trip they call Get Lost. You fill out an extensive questionnaire on what you’re expecting from your escape, but you’ll have no idea where you’re going till they get you there. Environment options are Polar, Desert, Coastal, Jungle or Mountain.

You’re given pre-trip prep advice and navigation instruction, and then, at trip time, all the transfers, gear and mapped-out checkpoints you’ll need. Your progress is monitored by a specialist in the chosen environment and by a local guiding support team. You can bail out at any time.

“We’ve sent clients to Iceland and Alaska,” says Black Tomato’s co-founder Tom Marchant. “We sent one solo traveler to Mongolia.” A woman trekked on her own across Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.

Marchant says there’s the challenge of managing the environment, but “it’s also a time to truly disconnect from daily life in an entirely new way.”

April 24, 2001: Hawaii public school teachers ratify contract, ending 19-day strike

Which Austrian Alpine region is right for you?

With epic scenery and fresh mountain air guaranteed, Austria’s Alps offer travellers an inviting mix of culture, relaxation and adventure. Find out which area would suit you this summer.

A person on a mountain lookout platform.

One of Europe’s top skiing destinations in winter, the Austrian Alps are sometimes overlooked as a place to visit in summer. But once the snow seekers go into hibernation and the ski schools shut up shop, the mountains, meadows and valleys here take on a different look — and other activities take centre stage. You’ll find hiking, climbing and biking routes across the Alps, as well as beautiful lakes to swim in. Travellers chasing an action-packed break can try cycling in Kitzbühel or paragliding in St Anton, while those in search of peace and quiet could venture to the nature park in Zillertal. For culture and food, visit the bustling city of Innsbruck or head to Paznaun-Ischgl. Here, discover the right Austrian Alpine region for you.

Colourful traditional Austrian buildings with a mountain backdrop.

Best for: a city break This mid-Alpine urban centre in the west of the country is the gateway to the Tyrolean mountains. For many, it offers the best of both worlds, with an attractive old town, interesting sights — such as the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) — and the Nordkette Cable Car that cruises up to the surrounding peaks. Summer brings a fun programme of events, including a series of open-air concerts held in the courtyard of the Kaiserliche Hofburg (Imperial Palace). Learn about local history and culture while paddling on the River Inn on a city rafting tour with Stubai Rafting or try Up Stream Surfing , a fun combination of river surfing and wakeboarding.

Best for: mountain biking A place that holds many accolades for its skiing facilities, glitzy Kitzbühel also flexes its muscles in summertime. Take biking, for example — the area has hosted a cycling marathon, Der Kitzbüheler Radmarathon , since 2021 and boasts one of the most challenging road ascents in Austria: the Kitzbüheler Horn. Mountain bikers will love the recently opened Sonnenrast trail or the single-track Hahnenkamm route, which runs all the way back to the town.

Paznaun-Ischgl

Best for: Alpine cuisine Cool air and rocky peaks see cyclists flock to the 25-mile-long Paznaun Valley in summer for events such as the E-Bike World Championship , but there's another draw here, too. Alongside Ischgl’s high-end restaurants are a number of rustic mountain huts, which from July to October offer seasonal dishes developed by local chefs. Traditional cooking is combined with gourmet flair, with last year’s highlights including Alpine beef with wild herbs, and nettle ravioli with barley, cheese and chicory. Also, be sure to taste the region's signature cheese, Paznauner almkäse (mountain cheese), which gets its distinct taste from alpine herbs.

Schladming-Dachstein

Best for: views With more than 300 lakes and 100 waterfalls, the Schladming-Dachstein region is one of the most water-rich in Austria — take a short hike to Spiegelsee on the Reiteralm to see the mountains mirrored on the glass-clear water of the lake. The region's standout feature, however, is the majestic Dachstein Mountain . The mountain station at 2,700m above sea level is easily reachable by cable car and offers views as far as the Czech Republic and Slovenia. A suspension bridge, a viewing platform and the snappily titled ‘Stairway to Nothingness’ await visitors here, while a shiny new cable car station is scheduled to open in May 2024.

St Anton am Arlberg

Best for: outdoor activities Known as the birthplace of Alpine skiing, St Anton am Arlberg has a fascinating history that’s shared with visitors year-round at the local Museum of St Anton am Arlberg . In warmer months, the town provides the perfect base from which to try a whole host of outdoor activities. Adrenaline-seekers can try paragliding or canyoning, while those seeking relaxation can unwind at the Mountain Yoga Festival St Anton — and those wanting a bit of everything can make for the action-packed Mountain Sports Festival . Whatever you go for, St Anton am Arlberg is easy to reach by train thanks to regular high-speed connections from Vienna and Zurich.

St Johann in Tirol

Best for: local charm St Johann in Tirol sits at the foot of the impressive Wilder Kaiser Mountains, alongside the charming villages of Oberndorf, Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf. There are ample activities on offer in the region, including hiking, road cycling and mountain biking, golf and swimming. For a true taste of the area, check out the many local farm shops and cafes to pick up outstanding fresh produce or visit the traditional St Johann Weekly Market to sample regional specialities such as brodakrapfen (a pasty-like snack filled with potato and cheese).

People paddleboarding on a lake.

Zell am See-Kaprun

Best for: swimming and watersports On a calm day, the mountains around Lake Zell are reflected in the clear water below. Refreshing water temperatures and lakeside lidos make this Salzburgerland spot popular for swimming, as well as stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. Not far away is the modern Tauern Spa , with 12 pools and a selection of wellness areas including 10 saunas and steam rooms — try the rock crystal sauna with different infusions such as mint and citrus or lemongrass and eucalyptus, and be sure to set aside ample time to take in the surrounding scenery.

Best for: nature The wide Zillertal valley is located to the east of Innsbruck. There are plenty of areas dedicated to outdoor sports here, including an extended ski season and year-round activities on the Hintertux Glacier , but also parts that remain almost untouched. The High Mountain Nature Park Zillertal Alps covers a 160sq-mile area and is home to thousands of animal species, including 500 kinds of butterfly, and more than 1,000 plant varieties. From May to October, themed hiking tours led by the experienced park guides — such as the ‘herb walk’ or wildlife watching — provide fascinating insights into the local flora and fauna.

How to get past the Taken Anomaly section of The Whisper Exotic quest

How to get past the Taken Anomaly section of The Whisper Exotic quest

Image of Anthony Yates

The Whisper Exotic Quest is full of brutal jumping sections and deceptive puzzles. The oppressive time limit makes the situation even worse, so let me show you how to get past the Taken Anomaly section of the Whisper Exotic Quest.

How to escape the Taken Anomaly room

If you’ve been staring at the room in the picture above for a while, don’t worry; I did the same. This room is enormous, and there’s no obvious way out. Fortunately, the solution is far simpler than you think.

How to get past the Taken Anomaly section of The Whisper Exotic quest

Stand in the doorway where you came in, and the exit is immediately beneath you through a small hole in the wall (pictured above).  It’s as easy as that, and the solution is hidden in plain sight the entire time.

Is there anything else in the Taken Anomaly Room?

At first, I thought this room was a trick to waste time on a mission with a strict time limit, but there’s a little more to it.

quest travel.com

If you jump down the Chasm in the middle, there’s a shadowed area where hordes of Thralls constantly spawn. There’s likely an Oracle Spawn down here, but I can’t say for sure as they are time-gated.

On the topic of Oracles, there’s another that’s also time-gated, hidden by a complex jump puzzle.

How to get past the Taken Anomaly section of The Whisper Exotic quest

You can start the puzzle from here (pictured above) and slowly traverse the grassy ledges around the area.

How to get past the Taken Anomaly section of The Whisper Exotic quest

The final ledge reveals a hidden room. I can’t say that this is an Oracle for sure, but as my reticule goes red and triggers my aim assist, It’s a fair bet that one will appear here in the following weeks.  The Whisper is a fantastic Exotic Quest and probably my favorite one in Destiny 2. There’s a nasty boss at the end of the quest , but he’s much easier if you reach him with plenty of time to spare.

Fortnite: Elements - All Quests, Rewards & Chakras

Korra and many other characters from the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe are already in Fortnite, but of course, Aang will join them too!

Aang is unlockable within an Event Pass, along with numerous other Avatar cosmetics. We have an overview of all the Element Quests and Rewards for you.

Aang x Fortnite: All Element Quests

Unlike normal quests, these challenges grant you Chi, needed to progress through a small Event Pass. There is a free Event Pass and a premium reward path, which you can unlock for 1,000 V-Bucks. By purchasing the premium reward path upgrade, you automatically unlock the "Aang" outfit. The following table lists all the "Element" quests.

All quests and rewards will become progressively unlockable from April 12, 2024! The last two tasks of Phases 2 to 6 will only be published if another task causes problems for players.

Phase 1: Water Chakra (from April 12)

Phase 2: earth chakra (from april 15), phase 3: fire chakra (from april 18), phase 4: air chakra (from april 22), phase 5: sound chakra (from april 25), phase 6: light chakra (from april 25).

For some more XP, you have to solve quests on creator-made-islands in the Fortnite Creative Mode.

Aang x Fortnite: All Elements - Rewards

As mentioned earlier, you will get Chi by solving quests. The collected Chi will get you the following rewards:

The Elements-Quests are split up in six phases as we have seen. If you solve every single one of them, you will get enough Chi for every reward from the Event-Pass. Additionally, if you got all 6 Chakras, you will get the Appa-glider as a bonus reward. You won't have to buy the paid path, by the way.

The Avatar-event will stay in Fortnite till May 3, 2024, as far as we know.

The community is really hyped, and we are too!
