Josh Homme is bringing Queens of the Stone Age to Glasgow

Iconic rock band Queens of the Stone Age are coming to Cardiff Castle this Friday (June 23). The American band are making a pitstop in Wales as part of its UK tour before heading onto Somerset to play Glastonbury festival at the weekend. This show will mark the band's first headline show in Cardiff since 2002 - 21 years ago. So it's set to be a pretty special night indeed!

Fans will be able to sing along and rock out to timeless hits like Little Sister, If Only, No One Knows, Regular John, Feet Don't Fail Me, Mosquito Song, Make It Wit Chu, In My Head, Go With The Flow and so many more.

The band was founded in 1996 in Washington by lead vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme, who has remained a constant figure in the set up for the last twenty plus years. In 2004, the band saw Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl join the band (among other instrumentalists) to record drums for its third album. He left the band a year later to focus on other projects.

For the last decade, the lineup has consisted of Josh alongside Troy Van Leeuwen - who plays guitar, lap steel, keyboard, percussion and does backing vocals - Michael Shuman, aka Mikey Shoes, on bass and backing vocals, keyboardist and occasional guitarist Dean Fertita and drummer Jon Theodore. The event is being run by Orchard Live and with the option to only 'get updates' on the band's website, it seems that tickets have sold out!

What could the set list be?

What do you need ticket-wise?

Ensure you have your tickets downloaded on your phone or printed off prior to arrival.

If you need to collect your tickets the box office opens on gig day from 3.30pm and can be found at the north entrance of the castle.

Support at the shows will come from Isle Of Wight indie band Coach Party. Tickets go on general sale from 9am on Friday April 21, with an artist pre-sale available from Wednesday April 19.

God Is In The TV

LIVE: Queens Of The Stone Age – Cardiff Castle, Cardiff, 23/06/2023

To be fair, even in their prime, you were never quite sure what you were going to get at a QOTSA live show.

This author particularly remembers a plodding mid-afternoon set in the sun at Reading Festival in 2001 which was painful to watch. Even the double joy of seeing both Nick Olivieri’s penis and Nick Olivieri’s beard flapping in the Berkshire breeze could not elevate it above the level of drab.

At their best, though, they were incredible. There was a show at the Forum where they absolutely tore the roof off for what seemed like hours. Bassist Olivieri was lead rabble-rouser, Singer Josh Homme was enthralling with his sharp, aggressive guitar lines, and the now-sadly-departed Mark Lanegan brought his gruff brilliance too. There’s a set from Glastonbury 2002 on YouTube which really captures the band at their absolute best from that era too, complete with a certain Mr Grohl on drums.

This was in late-2002, which was really the band’s heyday. Songs For The Deaf had been released earlier that year, the first great rock record of the 21st century, and unsurpassed since then. Themed around a road trip through the desert, it incorporated screaming thrash and grinding stoner rock into an irresitable hard rock journey, one which catapulted the band into the mainstream behind singles ‘No One Knows’ and ‘Go With The Flow’ .

Olivieri left the band in early 2004, and sadly, much of the band’s punk rock spirit left with him. That said, the popularity of the band has remained very high, as evidenced by how quickly tonight’s show sold out. With the maturity of hindsight, most of us can probably admit that most of the band’s albums since then haven’t been awful, and that a greatest hits set from those records would probably stand up against any other band from the era.

Which is a good thing, because for the first hour or so of tonight’s set at beautiful Cardiff Castle, that is exactly what we see, and it’s a really rather good arena rock show. Not Glasto 2002 good, but definitely a lot better than Reading 2001.

IMG 20230625 104050

There’s plenty of highlights, from the staccato jerkiness of ‘Sick Sick Sick’ to the sweeping majesty of ‘My God Is The Sun’ to the menacing ‘If I Had A Tail’ . Right up with those is the groovy fun of ‘The Evil Has Landed’ , from the Villains album, a track that actually singularly justifies the continued existence of Mark Ronson . Bravo.

The band also play four songs from new album In Times New Roman , of which the undoubted highlight is lead single ‘Emotion Sickness’ . The howling guitar riff in the verses on that track really is something else, one to make the guitarists in the audience make a rash investment in whatever pedal is needed to make their instrument sound like that.

‘Make It Wit Chu’ , meanwhile, is accompanied by some fun crowd participation, which proves that, even in the land of Harry Secombe and Tom Jones , the average lady on the street has a much better singing voice than the average guy. Sorry fellas, we sounded pretty bad.

What is really striking about the set, when compared to the early noughties, is the demeanour of Homme. Back in the day, he was the epitome of aloof cool, all arrogant swagger. He wasn’t rude to the crowd, but a lot of the time, he wasn’t exactly welcoming either. Tonight, though, is totally different. He genuinely seems overwhelmed by the reception his band gets, and he smiles! A lot! Not gonna lie, it feels nice to be loved by Josh Homme.

IMG 20230623 230749

Anyway, that was the first hour.

Then shit got real.

It is initiated, as you might expect, by those iconic opening chords to ‘No One Knows’ . Instantly, the moshpit, which had been a polite 30 rows or so deep for most of the night, suddenly goes 300+ rows deep, and man, it is wild. Suddenly, it really DOES feel like 2002 all over again.

This is followed up with ‘In The Fade’ , which is a great tribute to Lanegan, a man who truly did live until he died. Then ‘God Is In The Radio’ , a song they have hardly played in the last fifteen years, which they may or may not have chosen to play to mark the twentieth anniversary of Cardiff-based music website God Is In The TV . Either way, it’s probably the best song of the night.

The band close with ‘ A Song For The Dead’ , and in the moshpit, it is absolute fucking chaos. Even though this track is old enough to legally drink in the US now, the heaviness of it will never get old.

The only slight disappointment is the omission of ‘The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret’ from the setlist, even though it could clearly be heard drifting down the streets of Cardiff during the soundcheck, but we can’t be too greedy. For those who weren’t around in 2002, this ending to the show is a more-than-worthy flashback.

All-in-all, a tremendous night, a brilliant celebration of one of the truly great rock bands of this century. Long live the Queens of the Stone Age.

I am unbelievably disappointed having spent £120.00 that I only saw some of The Hives. I left the festival in 30 degree heat, unable to get a drink unless I was prepared to queue for up to, or over 2 hours. This was unfeasible given the temperatures and the fact that I would miss the bands.

I was then told I was not allowed to re-enter the festival if I left. THIS WAS OUTRAGEOUS! We were not allowed to take refreshments inside the festival. We COULD NOT get a drink inside the festival and then were penalized for getting refreshment outside the site. Why was there no re-entry? This policy should have been immediately changed when you realised you were unable to provide adequate refreshment.

I would expect a refund as this was a terrible experience and one I will never repeat. I missed the bands I wanted to se because of your dreadful lack of planning.

I expect a reply please at your earliest convenience.

It was a pretty poorly organised affair if I am completely honest.

The queues for the bars were totally ridiculous and some of my friends left early as they were just so fed up with waiting for a drink.

That said, the bands were staggeringly good. I've been following QOTSA since 200 and have lost count of the number of times I've seen them but can honestly say that this was amongst the best I have seen them. Josh was on good form and the crowd were loving it. (Iggy had warmed them up nicely).

Before that we saw Brody Dalle, whose new stuff is excellent and benefited from the drummer and guitarist from Savages helping her out.

Deap Vally were excellent, as were Skinny Girls Diet but somehow, Miles Kane didn't fit into the line up.

Nice shows, shame about the organisation!

Queens of the Stoneage were Amazing,I have seen them Twice in the UK but this Gig was so much Better,Josh Homme & the Band were on Top Form Playing All their Big Singles Aswell as Tracks which they would not Normally Play like Songs From The Deaf & Millionaire which were Amazing,We came to the Gig Because Royal Blood were Supporting & we are Massive Fans of Theirs After Seeing Them Live in Cardiff on Their How Did We Get So Dark Tour Last November in Cardiff,I would Love to See Queens Of The Stoneage Play in the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff as on this Album Tour they only played London & Manchester which was a Real Disappointment as we always try to see them,we Seen them on the Era Vulgaris Tour in the 02 in Bristol when Josh Homme was not well & the Like Clockwork Tour in Birmingham 21/11/13 which they were good,I would love them to come to the Capital of Wales to play as they do have Loads of Fans here too,Fingers Crossed.

The Struts announce Pretty Vicious tour dates

The hardest-working band in glam rock just keep working hard

The Struts group portrait

UK glam kings The Struts are to continue their near-relentless touring schedule with a new run of North American shows in support of last year's Pretty Vicious album.

The band, who are currently on the road with Queens Of The Stone Age in Canada, will play at the House of Blues in Houston TX, on July 23, and wrap things up over a month later at the House of Blues Anaheim in Anaheim, CA, on August 30. Support at most shows will come from English singer-songwriter Barns Courtney.

"We’re very excited and honoured to be playing so many great places this summer!" say the band. "It’s not too late to meet us at a show, so be sure to grab your tickets!" Tickets are on sale now .

After their commitments with Queens Of The Stone Age, The Struts have a pair of dates with Staind in Newark and Baltimore, before another run of headline shows in the build-up to this year's Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, FL, on May 11. Then it's back to Europe for two festival dates, at the UK's Download Festival on June 14, and at the God Save The Kouing Festival in Penmarch, France, the following weekend.
