London based quartet Portico Quartet are an unusual live act but definitely worth getting tickets for. Currently on the cusp of a reinvention due to the departure of Nick Mulvey, and then his replacement Keir Vine, the band are debating dropping the quartet from their name and continuing simply as Portico.

This band have managed to almost trademark an instrument when performing live, the Hang resides over all of their tracks delivering a brooding, somber atmosphere which matches their personal brand of disjointed jazz. Constant layering of instruments in proficient timing by the four musicians onstage with no chatter onstage may feel slightly clinical yet the mesmerising way in which the band recreate the complexity of their discography distracts the crowd from the need to be acknowledged.

Despite the flicker of commerciality when 2008 debut 'Knees Deep In The Sea' was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, you get the idea that to the band this was a happy accident and they barely acknowledge it within their greater musical vision. Finishing off a short yet satisfactory set with guest vocalist Cornelia and the ethereal 'Steepless', the audience cheer in adoration of the musical masterclass they have just witnessed. Whilst former bandmate Nick Mulvey is off creating his own successes and has picked up another Mercury Nomination for his own debut, Portico have continued to develop and evolve. Several knock backs may have ended a weaker, less passionate band, yet the remaining trio are clearly impassioned about their sound and with the talent they possess, they really are an act to watch in both senses of the word.
