21 Things to Do in Cardigan Bay, Wales

Cardigan Bay is on the Pembrokeshire Coast in West Wales. It is where my grandparents lived for many years, so I think I have been pretty much every year since I was a baby! I have spent many childhood holidays here over the years, so thought I would write a blog post about all the things to do in Cardigan Bay Wales.

Wander the shops in Cardigan Town

Cardigan Town Wales

Ok, so there aren’t too many shops here in this little market town, but they have a few well-known high-street shops, as well as beach shops, coffee shops and art galleries. It can be nice to enjoy a slower pace, particularly coming from one the UK’s larger cities. Take a walk down to the bottom of the high street and you will find a pretty pub overlooking the river. There is also a small castle to explore too!

Feel the Soft Sand at Poppit Sands Beach

Poppit Sands Beach

Me and my family go to Poppit Sands in Cardigan Bay every time we visit West Wales and is one of the best Cardigan Bay beaches. I swear, the sand is one of the softest sands I’ve walked on (and I’ve been on a fair few beaches across the world!). The beach stretches far out, sometimes it takes you 5 minutes just to walk from the sand to the sea! But this is only a bonus as there is so much room to play large ball games on the beach.

The cafe has a little beach shop selling beach stuff, ice cream, as well as tea, coffee and toasted sandwiches (very nice by the way). You can walk along the beach to the right, and all the way around until you see Patch beach over the other side, or you can walk the end of the beach on the left side, and explore the rock pools where you can find starfish and other marine life ( it’s fun for grown-ups too haha).

Walk Along the Coastal Path

coastal paths cardigan bay

There are so many beautiful coastal paths along the Pembrokeshire Coast. A lot of the beaches connect, and you will find yourself wandering from cove to cove. The coastal path’s vary in scenery so it’s worth taking your time to explore the area. Usually you will be able to find a path straight from the beach in most places.

Go for a Gentle Canoe Trip on the River Teifi

river teifi from above

Heritage Canoes in Cardigan do canoe trips along the beautiful River Teifi. We tried this once, sharing a double canoe (which led to no arguments at all, uh-hum). The views are so pretty, especially when the suns out, and the guide will take you down the river at your own pace. There are some small rapids (if you can even call them that), which add a little excitement to the journey! There is also a wetland centre here with bird hides if you’re into bird watching.

Discover the Ruins at St Dogmaels Abbey

st dogmaels abbey

These 12th century ruins are free to visit and hold the remains of a pre-Norman church. They are quite impressive, situated in a small, unassuming town. They also have a museum, café, and gift shop here for refreshments after your visit. St Dogmaels Abbey is also very close to Poppit Sands beach, if you wanted to combine trips.

Have Fun at the Cardigan County Show

The Cardigan County Show is a local agricultural show that has been running for years (usually every July). It is a lot of fun for adults and kids alike with livestock judging, art and craft stalls, activities for kids, entertainment and just general countryness!

Visit Picton Castle & Gardens in Pembrokeshire

Picton Castle & Gardens in Pembrokeshire

Picton Castle & Gardens on the Pembrokeshire coast have beautiful walled gardens, a castle, bird of pray shows, you can even have your wedding here. The setting is very picturesque with the pristine green lawn set against the stunning castle. There is also a lovely woodland walk section, as well as some small art galleries. Great if you’re into history but also for those who love gardens.

Enjoy the picturesque town of New Quay, Cardigan Bay

harbour at new quay cardigan

New Quay in Cardigan Bay is a pretty little seaside town on the Pembrokeshire Coast, where you can enjoy fishing, boat trips, water sports and wandering around the traditional shops. If you’re lucky you may even get to see bottlenose dolphins in the bay. There are plenty of shops and pubs in New Quay and it makes a lovely base to explore surrounding areas.

Go for a Swim at Newport Beach

ocean at Newport Beach

Newport Sands Beach in Cardigan Bay is another childhood favourite spot. We used to spend our days here floating on our lilo’s in the estuary around the corner from the beach (which is a lovely walk also). The waves can sometimes be a bit bigger here than at Poppit, where it’s usually quite calm, so if you like body boarding, give Newport a go. There is a small café selling ice cream and hot chocolate, which tastes extra delicious after going for a cold swim! (the water never really gets that warm unless it’s an unusual heatwave).

Rent Out a Cute Holiday Cottage in Cardigan Bay

Holiday Cottage in Cardigan Bay

In recent years, me and my family have stayed in self catering cottages in Cardigan Bay or holiday accommodation, like Airbnb’s, where you can discover some great finds. There are so many holiday rentals in Cardigan Bay, you will be spoilt for choice! This one just above was an Airbnb which had beautiful views, and a woodland walking path right down to the ocean.

Visit the Shops and Beach at Tenby, Wales

Tenby beach, Wales

Tenby in Wales is a very popular seaside town which can get busy on a warm summer’s day. Tenby beach is beautiful with turquoise blue clear waters (there’s actually 3 beaches to choose from), a little cove to explore, as well as a stunning coastal path. The Tenby shops are worth exploring too, with a really pretty high street, as well as plenty of ice cream shops!

Try Sea Kayaking in Ceredigion

new quay wales boats.

I usually rent our Sea Kayaks from the place in New Quay, but you can find these anywhere really, and they are a great activity to do your summer holiday in Wales. The place in New Quay has a cornered off section of the harbour, where you can freely use your sea kayaks, which can be really fun coming in the waves!

Visit the National Botanic Garden of Wales

National Botanic Garden of Wales

The National Botanic Garden of Wales are definitely worth the visit and as there is so much to explore, you could easily spend a whole day here. If you love walking around pretty gardens and finding small art exhibitions, then make this a day trip. Perfect for all ages, there’s pretty wild gardens, formal gardens, a woodland walk, ponds, lakes, greenhouses, a Japanese garden and even a tiny fairy garden!

Explore Patch Beach

Patch Beach from above

Patch beach in Cardigan Bay is not best for swimming but great for walking and it has a great coastal path with gorgeous views out over the beach and villages. Its situated on the Teifi estuary and you can even cross over the estuary when the tides are low (this is only when tides are low, as when it gets deeper it can be dangerous to swim due to strong currents). There is also a caravan site and golf club close to the beach.

Go for a Morning Swim at Tresaith Beach, Wales

boats on Tresaith Beach, Wales

Travelling on the coastal path from Aberporth, you can walk to Tresaith beach quite easily. The beach is very picturesque, with sailing boats lined up along the edge. This tiny village is incredibly pretty and a lovely spot for a morning swim as it is so quiet and secluded on the golden sand bay.

Day Trip to St David’s Cathedral in Wales

St David’s Cathedral in Wales

St David’s in Wales is actually the smallest city in the UK. The cathedral at St David’s dates back to the 12th century and sits on a site of an old monastery, dating back even further to the 6th century. The views from both outside and inside the cathedral are impressive and worth a visit. The town itself is very pretty and it’s situated close to Whitesands Bay, which is a popular beach for surfers.

Get a Bike Hire in Cardigan Bay

Bike Hire in Cardigan Bay

Hiring bikes is always great fun right?! We normally hire them from either Cardigan high street or Newcastle Emlyn. From Newcastle Emlyn you could cycle down to Newport Beach and from Cardigan you can cycle all the way to Poppit Sands. The roads are quite hilly in Wales but if you want something easier, the path along by the wetlands centre in Cardigan is pretty flat (and very pretty too).

Spot Dolphins at Aberporth Beach

looking down on Aberporth Beach

Aberporth in Wales is a pretty little spot, with two beaches popular with locals and tourists alike. It’s a great place to swim and explore the caves and rockpools, as well as spotting dolphins off its shores (locals see them quite regularly). Aberporth was a former fishing village and it is still a popular pastime here today.

Walk the River by Cenarth Falls

River by Cenarth Falls Wales

This beautiful spot is situated between Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire and is a lovely place for a walk alongside the river. The Cenarth Falls look even better if there has been some rain too. You can take a walk by the river and then it leads up through some pretty woodland paths.

Hike Up Mt Carningli

Hike Up Mt Carningli

Mount Carningli can be accessed from the south of Newport and is reasonably steep in areas but not overly challenging (just make sure to bring some wind/ waterproof gear as the weather can change quickly in Wales). If you make it the top, you’ll be greeted by 360-degree views over Newport and beyond. Here’s map of a 2 hour walk you can do here.

Cilgerran Castle

Cilgerran Castle

Cilgerran Castle is a National Trust 13th century castle ruin, which overlooks Teifi Gorge. It boasts stunning views over the river and beyond and is a fun place to explore the old ruins to grab some unique pictures. There’s a small café and gift shop here and the entry is only £3.80 (2020 price).

See the sights in Cardigan

Cardigan Castle Sword. Wales

Of course, if you’re in West Wales, you should allow time to sightsee in Ceredigion’s second-largest town, Cardigan.  It is a small market town which stands on the River Teifi and borders the neighbouring county of Pembrokeshire.

At the bottom of the High Street, overlooking the river is the newly restored Cardigan Castle .  Although little remains of the original Norman fortress, you can explore the medieval walls, visit the stunning Regency-style gardens, and learn the story behind the castle’s gigantic chair.

Afterwards go inside the Georgian Mansion to learn the castle’s history and hear tales of the ghosts who roam the rooms.  You can even book an overnight stay in Cardigan Castle , but watch out at night!

Following your visit to the castle head up the High Street, where you’ll find a selection of shops and cafés.  Half-way up is the historic Guildhall, which now serves as a marketplace with craft and food stalls.

Relax on the beach at Poppit Sands

Poppit Sands, Ceredigion, Wales

If you’re lucky with the weather, one of the best things to do near Cardigan is head to the beach.

The closest beach to Cardigan town is the popular Poppit Sands, a vast open beach on the Pembrokeshire side of the Teifi estuary.  It is a Blue Flag bathing beach, with lifeguards in the summer months.  As its cute name suggests, Poppit Sands is a sandy beach, backed by sand dunes.

With so much sand and such a lot of space, Poppit Sands beach is ideal for games.  Alternatively, children can explore the rock pools at either end of the beach.

Facilities at Poppit Sands beach include a café, toilets and two nearby pubs overlooking the estuary.  The postcode for Poppit Sands beach is SA43 3LN .

Discover the ruins of St Dogmael Abbey

St Dogmaels Abbey, Wales

On the way to Poppit Sands, make a quick visit to St Dogmaels Abbey.  The ruins here today are of the Benedictine Abbey founded in 1120, on the site of an earlier pre-Norman church.

Admission to the abbey is free and signage around the ruins helps visitors imagine how it used to look.  In front of the abbey, the former Coach House is now a visitor centre and museum, showcasing artefacts found on the site.  There’s also a café, serving homemade food.

A small church, St Thomas the Martyr,  is now on the site of the former abbey.  It was built with materials from the abbey and has an interesting graveyard, with a Sagranus stone and headstones all lined up in a row.

St Dogmaels village also has a picturesque mill and duckpond in front of the abbey.  There is a pay and display car park about 5 minutes from the grounds.

Enjoy a day at New Quay

With three sandy beaches and a pretty harbour, New Quay is one of the best seaside towns to visit near Cardigan.  It is also one of the best locations for spotting dolphins in Ceredigion.  A dolphin population of more than 250 bottlenose dolphins live off the Welsh coast and spotting them is definitely one of the best things to do near Cardigan.

Picture of the Newquay boat trips newest boat the Dreamcatcher with a dolphin breaching close to the stern.

Dolphin Spotting Boat Trips sail from New Quay and run 1hr, 1.5 hr and 2 hr guided dolphin and wildlife trips.  This family-run business has been operating from New Quay harbour for almost 70 years.  They can accommodate up to 60 passengers on their larger vessels.  Alternatively, take a trip on their impressive new catamaran, the “Dreamcatcher”, which only carries 12 people and can also be chartered for a special trip.

You can learn more about the wildlife and local area from the enthusiastic crews on a fun, educational trip that’s suitable for all ages.   You can even take your dog free of charge!

In addition to enjoying the amazing wildlife, the data collected on your trip will help the Sea Watch Foundation.   This charity monitors numbers to develop a deeper understanding of the Cardigan Bay dolphins .

Click here New Quay Boat Trips to find out more and book online.

Or, if you prefer to stay on dry land, you could follow the Dylan Thomas Trail around town.  Keep an eye out for some of the places that inspired New Quay’s most famous resident poet, Dylan Thomas.

Step back in time at Cilgerran Castle

Cilgerran Castle, Wales

To discover more about the local history, head to Cilgerran Castle, an impressive 13 th century fortress overlooking the Teifi Gorge.  Although only the ruins remain, the children loved looking at the giant round towers, the lime kiln and running where the moat once ran.

You’ll find three larger-than-life willow sculptures in the grounds, which represent the powerful princes and princess who lived there hundreds of years ago.

Although small, the grounds are beautiful, and you’ll have stunning views over the valley.  It doesn’t take long to visit, but you could extend your day out with a trip to the nearby Welsh Wildlife Centre in Cilgerran.

Read here for a full guide on a visit to Cilgerran Castle .

Please note that there is no car park on site, so you should park respectfully in the village and walk to the castle.

Follow a trail at the Welsh Wildlife Centre

Welsh Wildlife Centre, Wales

For wildlife enthusiasts one of the best things to do near Cardigan is a trip to the Welsh Wildlife Centre.  This nature reserve is on the outskirts of Cilgerran, just four miles from Cardigan.

You’ll find four main walking trails at the Wildlife Centre.  There are two short easy-access trails near the car park or two longer trails.

The Visitor Centre has a stunning glass café, toilets, and gift shop which overlooks the Teifi Marshes.  You’ll also find a picnic area and playground.

Admission to the Welsh Wildlife Centre is free, but parking is £4 for all day (unless you are a member).  The postcode for the Welsh Wildlife Centre is SA43 2TB.

Take a wildlife watching boat trip from St Dogmaels

Gwbert boat trip, Wales

Another popular departure point for spotting wildlife near Cardigan is Dogmaels.  We booked a boat trip with A Bay to Remember , which certainly was a memorable trip.  It’s amazing fun to to spot the wildlife in its natural habitat

Although you’re not guaranteed to see dolphins, you will certainly see lots of sea birds, caves and possibly Atlantic grey seals or Harbour Porpoises.

Cardigan Bay one of the last remaining havens for dolphins in the UK.  Although you can see the dolphins all year round, you have a better chance between May and September.

If you’re lucky, you can also see them from the headland along the Ceredigion coast.  Read more:   Dolphin watching in Cardigan Bay, West Wales

Visit Mwnt & Mwnt y Foel

View of Mwnt from the sea, Wales

One of our favourite days out near Cardigan was to Mwnt.  Not only does Mwnt have one of the best beaches in the UK, but it is another of the top places to spot dolphins and seals.  Next to the car park is a rocky, conical hill, Foel y Mwnt.  This hill provides an excellent vantage point for panoramic views and spotting wildlife.

The walk around Foel y Mwnt is about 1km.  It will take you past the gorgeous, white-washed chapel, Eglwys y Grog (The Church of the Holy Cross).

After a visit to the hill, we headed down the steps to the beach.  Mwnt beach is a picturesque, sheltered cove with golden sand.  Although there are no lifeguards, the sea is fantastic for kids, and the gentle waves are ideal for body boarders.

Hike the Ceredigion Coastal Path

Ceredigion Coastal Path, Wales

Ceredigion has a fantastic, scenic coastline, which is perfect for families who love hiking.  Cardigan is the start point for the long-distance Ceredigion Coast Path, which runs for sixty miles to Ynyslas, near Aberystwyth.  It is part of the Wales Coast path and offers fantastic walking opportunities for all levels of walker.

The coastal path is broken down into seven achievable sections, but you can dip in and out as you fancy.

We walked one section from Mwnt towards Gwbert, which is a steep ascent to the cliff tops.

For an easier route, walk from Aberporth to Tresaith, where you’ll the spectacular waterfall splashing down onto the beach.  This section of the coastal path is about one mile and has access paths for a lot of the route.

At Tresaith stop for a pint with a sea view at The Ship Inn or continue to the next beach Penbryn Beach, a sheltered National Trust beach.

You’ll find more ideas for walks in this book from Amazon:  10 Walks along the Ceredigion Coastal Path .

Discover a cave at Llangrannog Beach

Llangranog Beach, Ceredigion,Wales

Llangrannog has two of the best beaches on the Ceredigion coast, though you may need to wait for the tide to go out to access the hidden Cilborth Beach.

The main beach at Llangrannog is a beautiful, sheltered cove and is perfect for families.  Kids will love the caves on each side of the beach and the rocks which they can climb on.

The village has plenty of facilities, with several pubs and cafés on the beach front.

Parking is restricted in the village and can be an issue.  However, there is a free car park within a 10-minute walk.  It is a steep uphill climb on the return, but they do also provide a shuttle service to the beach.

Admire the coloured houses at Aberaeron

Aberaeron Houses, Wales

If you venture further along the coast, you can visit the gorgeous town of Aberaeron.

With its many rows of colourful painted houses, Aberaeron really is one of the prettiest towns in Ceredigion.  The Georgian town centres around the harbour, where you can see rows of elegant houses on either side.

Head to The Hive for delicious honey-flavoured ice cream or into town for a choice of more restaurants and independent shops.

There is a beach at Aberaeron, but it is mostly rocky until the tide goes out.

Visit a National Trust mansion

One of the most famous attractions near Aberaeron is the National Trust mansion, Llanerchaeron .  This 18 th century Georgian house is a Grade-1 listed property with a walled garden, farmyard, woodland, and ornamental lake.

For a picturesque walk,  follow the Riverside trail from Aberaeron Pier along the River Aeron to Llanerchaeron.  This flat route is about 2.5 miles, and you can return on the old railway line.

Chase waterfalls at Ffynone

Ffynone Waterfall, Wales

Nature lovers mustn’t miss a trip to the Ffynone Waterfalls in Abercych.  To get to this natural beauty spot, it’s a leisurely walk of about fifteen minutes along the Dulas River.

The stunning waterfall is in Pembrokeshire but is only seven miles from Cardigan.  It has a shallow pool area where you can paddle or try some open-water swimming.  For adventurous families with older children, you can scramble up the muddy path behind the waterfall to extend your walk.  This will lead through stunning ancient woodland and past more spectacular mini falls.

The postcode for the car park at Ffynone Waterfall is SA37 0HQ .

Spot leaping salmon at Cenarth Falls

Cenarth Falls, Wales

Another spectacular natural beauty spot near Cardigan is the waterfall at Cenarth Falls.  This cascade of waterfalls can be seen from the 17 th century road bridge in the little village of Cenarth.

There is a car park directly next to the falls.  From here you can take a woodland stroll on the boardwalks besides the River Teifi.  You’ll see the old mill on the opposite side of the falls and if you’re lucky you might spot a kingfisher or salmon leaping up the river.

The village of Cenarth has several gift shops, a café and pub.  You could combine your visit with a trip to the nearby town of Newcastle Emlyn.

Click here for more details about a visit to Cenarth Falls

Visit the spot of Wales' last dragon at Newcastle Emlyn

NewCastle Emlyn, Wales

Newcastle Emlyn is a small quirky town, with a rich, exciting history.  It was famously the place where Wales’ last dragon was slain.  Start your visit with a trip to its main attraction, the 13 th century castle.

Children will enjoy exploring the castle ruins and sitting in the wooden egg, representing the birth of the new dragon.  Afterwards, take a short riverside walk following the story boards recounting the town’s history.

In Newcastle Emlyn town, you’ll find some brightly painted buildings, an antique centre, and galleries.  Leave some time to enjoy some homemade cake in Harrison’s Café.

I love Wales, but this is an area I’m yet to explore. It’s got everything I like – wildlife, nature, history, gorgeous beaches and coastal walks, thanks for the guide! #culturedkids

You saw so much! We actually stayed in one of the rooms in the castle this summer, which was amazing! The High Street was so colourful – loved it! There is clearly so much we didn’t get around to seeing, so thank you for this handy list next time we go – Poppit Sands (great name!), Cenarth Falls and more castles for us! #Culturedkids

Avatar for Jan

That looks fantastic – almost something out of Lord of the Rings (the duck pond pic and the weaved statues in the castle…) I’ve never really thought of visiting Wales but maybe I should…if we ever get allowed out again! #CulturedKids

Oh you should, Wales is a wonderful place to visit.

30 Wonderful Cardigan Bay beaches to explore

  • David Angel
  • Wales , United Kingdom

Cardigan Bay beaches are among the best beaches in Wales, and they are a wonderfully varied bunch.

They are spread over more than 200 miles of Welsh coast, encompassing everything from deserted wide beaches for romantics to traditional British funfair and fish’n’chips charm, with a World Heritage Castle and an occasionally visible petrified forest.

I’ve been visiting the beaches of Cardigan Bay for over 40 years, returning a great many times and exploring all parts of the coast at length.

My guide to the best beaches of Cardigan Bay begins with my top ten picks, followed by the best of the rest from each area.

These are the top ten beaches in Cardigan Bay .

Table of Contents

1. Mwnt Beach

Mwnt beach – Traeth y Mwnt – is a wonderful sandy cove with cliffs on three sides, and my pick of the best Cardigan beaches.

It’s a 4-mile drive from Cardigan (Aberteifi) town through exceedingly narrow lanes hemmed in by hedgerows, but the effort is absolutely worth it.

Mwnt is one of the most picturesque Welsh beaches, with a hill (after which it’s named) and a beautiful whitewashed church with a simple bellcote close to the clifftop. The view to Cardigan Island (Ynys Aberteifi) is rather special too.

It’s usually busy during the summer months, but much quieter over the winter.

How to get there: here are two direct buses (the 552 service) a day from Cardigan, and it can also be reached from Aberporth and New Quay.

2. Llangrannog Beach and Cilborth Beach

The coastline around the village of Llangrannog is among the most scenic on the Ceredigion coast, and the starting point for some of the most enjoyable Cardigan Bay walks.

Its two sandy beaches are separated by a cliff at high tide, but you can walk between the two when the tide is out.  Both beaches are great for kids with rock pools to explore and Carreg y Bica rock a distinctive landmark.

There are also two pubs close to Llangrannog beach and a couple of great cafes serving fish and chips. If you’re feeling active, the steep mile-long walk up the coast to Ynys Lochtyn is outstanding, especially with the summer flowers in bloom. It’s one of the most spectacular stretches along the Ceredigion coastal path, worth driving all the way to Mid Wales to experience.

Image of Llangrannog beach and statue of St Carannog

3. New Quay Harbour Beach

A day out in New Quay Wales – Cei Newydd – is one of the best things to do in Cardigan Bay. It’s a little reminiscent of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, with rows of pastel-painted houses huddled around the lovely harbour and beach below.

There are four beaches in New Quay, if you also count Llanina beach a couple of miles away across the bay, but the busy Harbour beach is the pick of them, and indeed one of the best on the whole Cardigan Bay coast.

4. Aberystwyth North Beach

‘Aber’ is the cultural nexus of Mid Wales, a university town that has seduced a great many of its students into staying on permanently. It was a popular Victorian resort, and to see why, stand near the Pier and look up North Beach towards Constitution Hill.

Aber North Beach ( Traeth y Gogledd) is one of the most popular Cardigan Bay beaches , a steeply sloping shingle beach with wooden breakwaters, hugely popular with locals, students and visitors alike.

Head there on a sunny summer evening to get an idea why it’s such a special place.

5. Borth Beach and Ynyslas Beach

Borth Beach is a long, wide swathe of sand near the northern tip of Ceredigion, backed by the long single street that makes up much of the village.

The beach is brilliant, with great quality golden sand and superb views north towards the mountains of Snowdonia.

Close to the village, extreme low tides occasionally reveal a series of petrified tree stumps, the remnants of the lost lands of Cantre’r Gwaelod,

Borth village is not quite so endowed with mystical charm. Food options are especially limited, with nearly every meal there accompanied by chips (French fries) – ironic, given that Michelin-starred Ynyshir , one of the best restaurants in Wales, is only a few minutes’ drive away.

Ynyslas beach is the northern extension of Borth beach, a glorious isolated lost world of vast empty sands and dunes with great views across the estuary to Aberdovey.

Image of Ynyslas beach with Borth in the distance

6. Barmouth Beach

The seaside town of Barmouth is one of the best destinations for Cardigan Bay holidays. The magnificent Blue Flag main beach stretches from the sublime Mawddach estuary – one of the most beautiful rivers in Wales – to the seasonal funfair, amusement arcades and fish and chip shops.

It has masses of appeal right across the board, with plenty of cafes and restaurants and the Harbour also close by.

Barmouth is one of the few places in Mid Wales from which you can get around extensively by public transport, with the likes of Harlech, Portmeirion and even Criccieth within easy reach via the Cambrian Coast Line.

7. Dyffryn Ardudwy Beaches

Dyffryn Ardudwy is a long, straggling one-street village in the shadow of the rugged Rhinog mountain range, half a mile inland from some of the most beautiful beaches in Wales.

The coast from Barmouth in the south to Shell Island in the north seems to be one long, continuous beach, but the sands are divided into different beaches by streams flowing into the sea.

Bennar and Llanenddwyn beaches are just to the west of Dyffryn Ardudwy village, and Morfa Dyffryn beach, a haven for naturists, is just to the north of these. The area is popular in summer, but even then the vast spaces along the beach make you feel you’re well off the beaten track.

Getting there: Bus or train to Dyffryn Ardudwy, then a 10-minute walk.

Image of the beaches of Dyffryn Ardudwy Gwynedd Wales Uk

8. Harlech Beach

Harlech Beach is one of the best beaches in North Wales , a vast sweep of sand several miles long, curving northwards to the peaks of Snowdonia, including Yr Wyddfa, Mount Snowdon, itself.

There is good access to the middle of the beach, and via the viewpoint at the southern end, but few facilities. This beach is fine for families if you stop at the car park close to the village.

It’s also one for the wild romantics with a seemingly endless walk towards the dunes and emptiness of Morfa Harlech to the north.

And to top it all off, you can see the might of Harlech Castle, one of the four castles in North Wales to comprise the Castles in Gwynedd UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Getting there : Bus or train to Harlech, then a 1 km (0.6 mile) walk to the beach.

Image of Harlech Beach Wales UK

9. Criccieth Beaches

Criccieth (spelt Cricieth in Welsh) is one of the most beautiful towns in Wales, and much of this is down to its picturesque Castle, which stands on a headland between Criccieth East and Criccieth West beach.

Criccieth East beach is the better of the two, a sloping shingle beach revealing a wide strip of sand at low tide. The view of the Castle is wonderful, and there is also a great restaurant and ice cream shop just back from the beach.

Image of Criccieth east beach and Castle Gwynedd Wales Uk

10. Llanbedrog Beach

This breathtaking Cardigan Bay beach is one of a small number to face south-east, and its sheltered position behind the mass of Mynydd Tir-y-Cwmwd nearly always ensures calm waters, making for one of the best beaches in Wales for families.

Llanbedrog beach is idyllic (except for the 5 GBP car park charge!). You follow a narrow road through woodland, along a stream, emerging onto this gorgeous beach, with a row of brightly-painted beach huts on one side and an old stone white house below the forest on the other.

The Aqua Bar & Grill has always served good food, and it’s just a few metres from the beach. A phenomenal beach, with a surprise walk up the cliff path for an exhilarating view as well.

Image of beach huts at Llanbedrog beach Gwynedd Wales UK

11. Abersoch Beaches

The village of Abersoch has three of the best Llŷn Peninsula beaches – the two close to the village are very popular, especially in spring and summer, while Porth Ceiriad, a mile or so to the south, receives a fraction of the footfall the others get.

The main beach, Abersoch beach, is outstanding. The long strip of soft sand is lined with a higgledy-piggledy collection of painted wooden beach huts, and it affords dramatic views east to the mountains of Snowdonia.

It’s great for paddling for the kids, and is also one of the main Cardigan Bay watersports centres, with opportunities for everything from SUP to sailing.

Cardigan Bay Beaches – Ceredigion

1. aberporth beach.

Aberporth is a lovely seaside village with a large, wide beach – the east side of it is called Aberporth Beach, and the west side Traeth y Dolwen.

It’s a very pretty location, with a stream full of boats on one side of the beach and a headland on the other. I’ve visited several times, and always been surprised it hasn’t become much more popular than it is.

It’s best in spring and summer when the beachside cafes are open. There are rockpools on either side to keep inquisitive kids occupied, and an easy mile-long walk along the Ceredigion Coast Path to Tresaith.

Image of the adjoining Aberporth beaches Cardigan Bay Wales UK

2. Tresaith Beach

Tresaith beach is one of the most picturesque Cardigan Bay beaches. It’s a small sandy cove with cliffs at either end, and, weather permitting, a waterfall flowing down the cliffs to the east of the beach. One of the best hidden gems of Wales.

Image of the waterfall at Tresaith beach wales

3. Penbryn Beach

Traeth Penbryn is another beautiful Cardigan Bay beach, just a mile (1.6 km) along the Coast Path from Tresaith.

It’s an idyllic National Trust beach with a bit of everything – soft golden sand, cliffs, rockpools, a cave – and a great tearoom next to the car park up the hill called the Plwmp Tart.

Penbryn is renowned for its brief appearance in the James Bond movie Die Another Day , which starred Pierce Brosnan.

If you’re up for it, take the two-mile 3 km walk along the Coast Path to Llangrannog, pausing for a while at the gorgeous Traeth Bach, a tiny sandy beach only accessible via the Coast Path, halfway between the two.

4. Cwmtydu Beach

Cwmtydu is a tiny beach squeezed between two large headlands between Llangrannog and New Quay.  It’s barely 100 metres from end to end but well worth the trek. The coastal walks in either direction from there are superb. It’s well worth making a day of it if you have the time.

Cwmtydu is also a prime location for spotting bottlenose dolphins in Cardigan Bay. The regular boat trips from New Quay head for this area, just a few miles from port.

Image of Cwmtydu beach Ceredigion Mid Wales UK

5. New Quay – Dolau Beach, Traeth Gwyn and Cei Bach Beach

Dolau Beach is a wonderful small beach a few minutes’ walk from the main New Quay beach next to the Harbour.

Its soft sand is surrounded by rocks on either side, and like its neighbour it’s a picturesque spot with the terraces of houses on the hillside above.  It is also considerably quieter than the Harbour beach.

Cei Bach beach is a long swathe of sand curving a couple of miles or more around the bay beneath Quay West, a large Cardigan Bay caravan park to the tiny church at Llanina. Again it’s considerably quieter than the Harbour beach.

If you’re walking the Coast Path, continue to Llanina Point, after which the views open up north towards Aberaeron and, eventually, Aberystwyth.

Image of Dolau beach New Quay Wales UK

6. Llanrhystud Beach

As you head north up Cardigan Bay, Llanrhystud is the last beach before Aberystwyth, over ten miles (16 km) up the coast. It is a broad pebbly beach, with a section of sand revealed as the tide ebbs away. It’s a brief stop, worth the detour for the view of the wild cliffs that run north to Aberystwyth.

7. Aberystwyth South Beach

Aberystwyth South Beach is a fine-sloping pebble beach just to the south of Aberystwyth Castle and the War Memorial. It has a colourful backdrop, with a row of brightly painted houses.

It’s a fine spot with a view across the narrow Ystwyth estuary to Pen Dinas Hill and the quieter Tan y Bwlch or Penparcau beach.

Image of Aberystwyth South beach and town Wales UK

8. Clarach Bay

Clarach Bay is a mile or two north of Aberystwyth, just the other side of Constitution Hill if you’re planning to take the Coast Path.

It’s a pleasant shingle beach with patches of sand at low tide, with a chip shop and several caravan parks close by.  I wouldn’t go out of my way there, but the walk there and back from Aber is a fine way to spend the afternoon.

Image of Clarach Bay beach Mid wales Uk

Cardigan Bay Beaches – Pembrokeshire

1. pwllgwaelod beach.

Pwllgwaelod is a small beach between Fishguard and Newport (Pembrokeshire, as opposed to Newport, the third largest city in Wales 100 or so miles away). It’s on the west side of Dinas Head (sometimes called Dinas Island), dramatic headland separated from the ‘mainland’  by a marshy valley linking Pwllgwaelod and Cwm-yr-Eglwys.

Pwllgwaelod is much the larger of the two beaches, a wide expanse of sand at low tide. I strongly recommend the Dinas Head circuit, which climbs over 400 feet, taking in some astonishing cliff scenery and views of the Preseli Hills.

The Old Sailors is a pleasant restaurant close to the beach in what was a legendary pub, the Sailors Safety, which dated back to the late 16 th century and was known for some very long after-hours lock-ins.

Image of Pwllgwaelod coastline from Dinas Head Pembrokeshire Wales UK

2. Cwm-yr-Eglwys Beach

Serene Cwm-yr-Eglwys (which means ‘the valley of the church’) is barely 1 km east of Pwllgwaelod but its sheltered location in the lee of Dinas Head gives it a very different feel.

The beach itself is small, lapped by calm turquoise waters and overlooked by the ruin of a medieval church which was destroyed by several storms throughout the 1850s. the walk up the east side of Dinas Head is wonderful, as are the views of the indented coastline towards Newport.

Image of coastline near Cwm-yr-Eglwys Pembrokeshire Wales

3. Newport Beach (Pembrokeshire)

Often referred to as Newport Pembs or by its Welsh name Trefdraeth to distinguish it from its namesake city near Cardiff, there are two beaches in Newport – the smaller Parrog and the expansive Newport North beach.

The latter is much the better of the two, a wide golden sandy beach across the Nanhyfer river from the town.

Image of Newport Beach Pembrokeshire Wales UK

4. Ceibwr Bay

Ceibwr Bay is a small pebbly inlet on the remarkable northernmost stretch of the Pembrokeshire coast. It’s also the only point of access in the 12 miles between Newport (Pembs) and Poppit Sands.

The tiny beach isn’t much more than a rocky shoreline, but it’s worth the journey to this remote corner of Wales to see the amazing cliffs, their strata buckled and contorted by millions of years of pounding by the sea.

Top tip: The coastal walking in either direction is up there with the best in Wales.

Image of cliffs at Ceibwr Bay Cardigan Bay Wales UK

5. Poppit Sands

Poppit Sands is the first or last beach in Pembrokeshire, depending on your direction of travel. It’s close to the pretty village of St Dogmaels, which sits across the river Teifi from Cardigan, and is the better of the two estuary beaches (the other is Gwbert beach, on the Cardigan side).

Poppit Sands is a great wide sandy beach with dunes which, at low tide, stretches most of the way across the Teifi estuary. It’s popular with kite surfers, and the only beach of its size on this stretch of coast.

Cardigan Bay Beaches – The Snowdonia Coast

1. aberdovey beach.

Aberdovey beach is one of the most popular Cardigan Bay beaches, stretching around 4 miles (6 km)  from the town car park, past the extensive dunes and links golf course, all the way to Tywyn.

The vast space around the corner of the estuary is ideal for watersports, with kitesurfing and windsurfing especially popular.

See Also: Things To Do In Aberdovey – One Of The Loveliest Seaside Towns In Wales

2. Tywyn Beach

Vast Tywyn beach – not to be confused with Towyn beach on the North Wales coast – stretches for miles either side of the village after which it’s named.

It’s one of the more intriguing Cardigan Bay beaches, and a long walk at low tide will take you along soft flat sand, dunes, pebbly sections, breakwaters and remains of ancient peat beds and petrified forest, albeit less extensive than those down the coast at Borth. Stick close to the village for your fish and chips on the beach.

Cardigan Bay Beaches – The Ll ŷn Peninsula

1. black rock sands.

Black Rock Sands is one of the most famous North Wales beaches. The beach itself is fantastic, two miles of glorious golden sand and awesome views across Tremadog Bay to the Rhinog and Moelwyn ranges.

Unusually for Cardigan Bay beaches, you can drive onto this beach and park – no 4WD required, a standard 2WD vehicle should easily manage the tightly packed sand.

Visitors often drive close to the shoreline. The cars parked on the beach means it fills up surprisingly quickly on busy summer days – it’s at its best when quieter.

The caves at the west end of the beach and the views from the headland to Criccieth Castle are spectacular.

Image of Black Rock Sands beach North Wales UK

2. Porth Neigwl

Porth Neigwl – also known as Hells Mouth – is one of the best surfing beaches in Cardigan Bay. It’s a 4-mile (6 km) sweep of sand, blasted by some of the fiercest waves in the Irish Sea. It’s located in a remote corner of the Llŷn Peninsula between Aberdaron and Abersoch.

Image of Porth Neigwl beach on the Llyn Peninsula North Wales

3. Aberdaron Beach

Aberdaron is the Land’s End of North Wales, a tiny hilly, windswept village that, during the Middle Ages, was the departure point for pilgrims making the journey to the holiest of Welsh islands , Bardsey.

You can’t see Bardsey from the village. However, you are greeted by the sight of a superb sandy beach and clear waters with a view of two rocky islets in the bay.

The church overlooking the beach, St Hywyn’s, is very impressive, its considerable size explained by pilgrims’ donations down the centuries. Take a look inside before retiring to the Ty Newydd Hotel for a drink on the terrace.

Where Is Cardigan Bay?

Cardigan Bay – Bae Ceredigion in Welsh – is a vast bay on the west Wales coast, extending from Strumble Head in Pembrokeshire in the south to Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) in the north-west.

Most people primarily tend to think of Cardigan Bay as the series of beautiful beaches in Ceredigion, between Cardigan and Ynyslas.

This includes the short section of coast between Aberporth and Ynys Lochtyn, just north of Llangrannog, which is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Wales and the UK.

It actually covers three Welsh counties – Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Gwynedd. The latter includes a section of the Snowdonia National Park coastline and the southern coast of the Llyn Peninsula.

The northeast corner of Cardigan Bay also goes by the name of Tremadog Bay (Bae Tremadog), named after the village near Porthmadog.

Cardigan Bay Beaches – Final Words

Some Cardigan Bay beaches are right up there with the best places to visit in Wales. There’s something for everyone – from families looking for traditional bucket and spade beaches to wild remote coves only accessible by coastal path.

If I had to narrow it down to a few personal favourites, I’d have to go with Llanbedrog, Harlech and Barmouth beaches. But I recommend everywhere I’ve mentioned in the article.

The beauty of Wales is that it’s fairly small, so you can also combine your beach holiday in Cardigan Bay with exploring elsewhere. If you’re staying in North Wales, a Snowdonia road trip is a great way to see more of the country.

If you’re basing yourself in Mid Wales, the wild uplands of the Cambrian Mountains beckon. And if you’re staying further south, I’d suggest adding a day or two of our Pembrokeshire road trip to your itinerary.

With almost a millennium of stories to tell, Cardigan Castle is a must see. There is a link to multiple eras of Welsh history, with medieval castle walls and a restored Georgian house. Cardigan Castle is also the birthplace of the Eisteddfod, Wales’ biggest cultural festival of poetry and music.

On top of that, the castle’s stunning regency gardens are grade II listed and full of rare and interesting plants that are sure to interest any budding botanists. Members get free entry to the castle for twelve months, as well as discounted accommodation and access to exclusive special events.

2.  Cardigan Island Farm Park

A family run business for five generations, this unique Farm Park is a great place to visit for all the family. Cardigan Island Farm Park has spectacular views of Cardigan Island, which is a private nature reserve only 200 metres offshore. Look out for the nearby colony of Atlantic grey seals and the only resident dolphins in Welsh waters.

Farm animals at the park include locals like chickens and pigs, as well as the more unusual, like wallabies and emus! With all these and more, as well as gorgeous walks on the headland and a new adventure playground, this is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Cardigan Bay with the kids.

3.  Silver Mountain Experience

For a fabulous day out for all the family, why not visit the historic Silver Mountain Experience? Based at a preserved silver-lead ore mine, this is the perfect place to take your family if you’ve got a keen interest in history. They offer multiples tours with points of interest for everyone.

Learn all about the mining industry in Wales, as well as some of the local myths and legends. For kids under eight, don’t miss their magical tour – ‘A Dragon’s Tale’. There’s also the magical Woo Hoo Woods, where kids and adults can both get stuck into den making.

4.  Cardigan Bay Active

With a wide variety of outdoor activities on offer, Cardigan Bay Active is a great place to start when looking for family-friendly attractions in Cardigan Bay. Opened in 2011, this activity centre aims to provide family bonding time led by local tutors. Spend your day exploring the gorgeous natural landscape of Cardigan, with everything from surfing lessons to abseiling, and even white water rafting on offer. Or if you’d like to practise your aim, why not give archery or axe throwing a go?

5.  Theatr Mwldan

For families with older kids, Theatr Mwldan offers a touch of culture. Wales’ only independent multiplex in the heart of Cardigan, this theatre and 3-screen cinema provides diverse artistic activity all year round. Whatever your interests, there’s a wide range of art forms to choose from, including opera, stand-up comedy and mainstream movies. They also offer classes and performances hosted by others, so it’s definitely somewhere to keep an eye on. Plus, there’s a bar for the grown-ups!

Plus, it’s definitely the best way to see dolphins, porpoises and seals in their natural habitat off the west coast of Wales.

10.The Beaches

This might seem like an obvious one, but no list of things to do in Cardigan Bay would be complete without mentioning the beaches ! Mywt Beach offers gorgeous cliff-top views and is great for swimming. Poppit Sands beach has lots of space for kids to run around and Tresaith beach is ideal for young explorers who want to investigate the rockpools. The Aberporth beaches are also perfect for families, with independent cafes and sea angling to enjoy. Or, if you’re bringing your pooch along, Dyffryn beach is perfect for families with dogs.

For more fun with the kids, why not try one of these fun days out for families in the Brecon Beacons ? Or, for a grown-ups only trip, check out the distilleries in Wales you need to visit during your stay.

Northern Nights Set of Two Luxury Cooling Pillows

Nights are about to get a lot warmer—especially if you’re already a hot sleeper—but that doesn’t mean you need to rest uncomfortably. This set of two luxe cooling pillows , also on sale in the king size , is soft and supportive and features the brand’s HeiQ cooling technology fabric that constantly wicks moisture away from your body. The cover is made of 100 percent cotton, so it’s machine washable and dryable. Grab the set with a plush and firm filling combo, two firm, or two plush.

Skechers Slip-Ins GoWalk Travel Washable Shoes

If you’re planning a warm-weather getaway or just need some comfy, summer-ready walking shoes, this Skechers pair is designed for a variety of needs. They feature air-cooled memory foam, a flexible outsole, and a heel pillow that will keep your feet ache-free no matter where the day takes you. The easy slip-on style is stretchy and machine washable, so you can keep them looking like new wear after wear. One shopper said they offer “a lot of cushion and support,” so much that they “didn’t even want to take them off.”

Nourison Home Rose Border Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Add design and color to your living room or patio with this stain-resistant rug that’s made for indoor or outdoor use. It can stand up to high foot traffic areas like your entryway or backyard space, and it’s available in three floral designs: beige, blue, and multi-colored. One customer who “had them out by [their] pool all summer” shared that they “didn’t fade at all” and were “easy to clean.”

Shark Detect Pro Cordless Vacuum With QuadClean

For those who are still in spring cleaning mode, offer yourself a little help with a new cordless vacuum like the Shark Detect . The lightweight model has so many features to make tidying up a breeze, including four new cleaning technologies to get deep into carpets, along with three LED light indicators that let you know when a lot of dirt is detected, when the area is being cleaned, and when it’s fully finished. It also senses the type of flooring you’re using it on and prevents hair from getting wrapped around the brush roll. It’s so good, one shopper said even with two dogs, their “carpets have never been so clean.”

Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Ribbed Cuff Coastline Cardigan

Despite the rising temperatures, it’s always good to have a go-to layer on hand for cool nights and travel days. This Barefoot Dreams lightweight cardigan is at its lowest price all year and a can’t-miss buy thanks to the brand’s signature soft knit fabric that looks as good as it feels. It’s on sale in seven colors and sizes XS to 3X, and one reviewer called it “pure luxury” that “just makes [them] feel good.”

Things to see and do in Ceredigion

Discover the best things to do in Ceredigion, exploring the glorious countryside and coastal towns.

The county of Ceredigion is arguably the least spoilt of our holiday regions. It’s big, beautiful and sparsely populated. The countryside is all about traditional family farms, and lonely mountain lanes. The coast doesn’t do funfairs, but it does excel in perfect coves. It’s one of the great cheese-producing regions of Europe (seriously). So for a truly authentic Welsh family holiday experience, Ceredigion’s your place, and here are just a few reasons why:

New Quay, Ceredigion, Mid Wales

The Teifi Valley has some classic rural market towns – Tregaron, Lampeter, Llandysul, Cenarth – which are where the Welsh farming community comes to do its shopping, but they also support thriving galleries for local artists.  On the coast, there are lovely fishing towns and villages like Cardigan , New Quay and Aberaeron , and of course Mid Wales’ cultural capital, Aberystwyth .

Did we mention the perfect coves? The southern stretch of coast has some absolute gems – places like Mwnt, Aberporth, Lochtyn, Cwmtydu, Penbryn, Tresaith – which look like idealised illustrations from some childhood book about pirates. Further north around Aberystwyth and Borth, there are huge stretches of sand. And they’re all lapped by Cardigan Bay, home to big populations of  dolphins and porpoises  which, if you spend any length of time here, you’re almost guaranteed to see.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre

This seaside university town has one of the busiest and most vibrant arts centres  in the UK, hosting cinema screenings, dance, comedy and theatrical events, as well as all kinds of exhibitions. Keep an eye out for the  Wales One World Festival  early in the year and the International Ceramics Festival in the summer.

The National Library of Wales

There’s something awe-inspiring about  The National Library of Wales - it's an institution that aims to create an archive of every book, photograph, film and piece of music made in a country, - even somewhere as small as Wales. Best of all, this material is accessible to all visitors, who are also drawn by the regular exhibitions and lectures that take place at the library.

Cardigan (Aberteifi) is the second-largest town in Ceredigion, nestled on the shores of the Teifi estuary. It's home to the recently-restored Cardigan Castle , the wonderful Guildhall market building, and you can get your arts fix at Theatr Mwldan . It's also a good starting point for walks along the Wales Coast Path .

Cardigan Castle, Mid Wales

The pretty town of Aberaeron was established early in the 19th century and the colourful Regency style buildings around the harbour are quaint and unusual.

Llanerchaeron

Llanerchaeron  is an elegant, almost understated, Georgian mansion beside the River Aeron in Ceredigion. Llanerchaeron was built in 1790 by John Nash, who included Buckingham Palace and Brighton Pavilion on his impressive CV. The National Trust managed house now functions as a working organic farm, with Welsh black cattle, rare Welsh pigs and Llanwenog sheep.

Wildlife watching

Cardigan Bay is home to the sociable bottlenose dolphin, the comparatively shy harbour porpoise and over 5000 Atlantic grey seals. The Dolphin Survey Boat Trip  from New Quay will give you the opportunity to learn from expert volunteers about the work that goes into maintaining this Special Area of Conservation (SAC). You can also spot dolphins swimming and playing closer to shore from cliff tops and beaches - a really magical sight.

RSPB Ynys-hir Nature Reserve

The BBC’s much-loved Springwatch programme set up home amidst the woodland, wet grassland and saltmarshes of Ynys-hir in 2011. Ducks and geese reside here in winter, while the summer brings lapwings and redshanks. There are seven hides at RSPB Ynys-hir Nature Reserve for you to fully experience the wild wonder of this special corner of Ceredigion.

Bwlch Nant Yr Arian

The Cambrian Mountains offer an ideal playground for mountain bikers who enjoy a wild and rugged experience. There are three biking trails, three walking trails and a variety of other attractions in the area, including two childrens’ play areas and a café at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian   where you can watch red kites feeding over the nearby lake.

The Vale of Rheidol Railway

Catch a steam train on the Vale of Rheidol Railway  from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge and you seem to travel back in time along the 11 mile (17 km) narrow gauge railway track to Devil’s Bridge. This line opened in 1902 to serve local lead ore and timber industries since when it has only temporarily halted its service during times of war.

Devil's Bridge Falls

Devil's Bridge Falls is a remarkable site of not one, not two, but three bridges built where the River Mynach cascades 300 feet (90 metres) to the River Rheidol below. According to folklore the first bridge was constructed by the Devil himself, who was obviously a dab hand at this kind of thing having been credited with at least another 20 structures of a similar kind across Europe.

Award winning cheese

The Teifi Valley produces cheeses that have been voted the best in the world, beating all their fancy French and Italian competitors. It’s part of a huge food revival in this area, so you’ll find lots of traditional family favourites on the local menu, and of course some spectacularly good seafood from the coast.
