Your Trip to Phuket: the Complete Guide

phuket thailande voyage

If you can only visit one place in Thailand, zero in on the island of Phuket. Set some 400 miles south of Bangkok, Phuket crams a near-excess of sights and activities within its coastline: gorgeous beaches, delicious food, amazing natural parks, and access to some of the Andaman Sea’s most breathtakingly beautiful islands.

Backpackers introduced Phuket to the tourism world. The first backpacker-friendly accommodations sprung up in Patong in the 1970s, presaging a steady rise in visitors that peaked at 14 million in 2018. Phuket’s present-day attractions have evolved with tourist tastes; beyond the beaches, visitors can now check out Phuket’s Michelin-starred restaurants, world-class theme parks, and luxury hotels fringing the sands.

For the first-time visitor to Phuket, the island can be a lot to unpack at first glance. Read on to make sense of Thailand’s most popular tourist destination, and how you can have the time of your life when you visit.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best time to visit : Plan your trip between mid-October to mid-February; the “winter” months coincide with a cool, dry climate caused by northeast monsoon winds blowing in from Siberia.
  • Language: Central (standard) Thai is widely spoken throughout Phuket, though southern Thai is the local mother tongue. A fair number of Phuket locals can manage basic English, but don’t expect them to manage sustained conversation. These are a few useful phrases to learn when traveling in Phuket.
  • Currency : The Thai Baht (THB) is standard currency across the island.
  • Getting Around: You can ride buses (songthaew), tuk-tuks, or motorbike taxis to get around Phuket. Songthaew commute between Phuket Town and resort areas like Surin, Karon, and Patong. Tuk-tuks and motorbikes can take you on a point-to-point basis for short distances.
  • Travel tip: Phuket’s beaches are lovely to visit and swim in—but during the monsoon months between May and October, riptides and unpredictable swells make them positively dangerous for casual swimmers. Watch for red flags on the beaches, which warn against swimming when the conditions are too risky.

Things to Do

For an island just over 200 square miles in area, Phuket offers a surprising number of things to see and do. To be sure, its beaches are Phuket’s spotlight attraction, but there’s more to discover once you move beyond the coastline.

  • Enjoy Phuket’s beaches . Each beach in Phuket offers a distinct appeal that caters to different folks—partygoers go to Patong Beach, couples to Karon, and nature lovers and plane-spotters prefer Mai Khao.
  • Visit Phuket Town. In its heyday, Phuket Town was a key trading post for Thai, Chinese, and British colonial entrepreneurs. While the tin trade that drove local business has long since faded, the old town has retained its old-timey charm, its townhouses having been converted into museums, restaurants, and shops.
  • Take in the nightlife. All nightlife adventures in Phuket begin at Bangla Road in Patong—a neon-lit thoroughfare with attached soi (alleyways) brimming with bars, live music venues, and street performers.
  • Go island-hopping: The seas of southern Thailand offer some of the most breathtaking views, both above and underwater. Tours to Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga, and Koh Similan can be easily booked from your Phuket hotel.

What to Eat and Drink

Thanks to Phuket’s long history as a trade entrepot, the local culinary scene bears influences from all over—European fine dining, Southern Chinese home cooking, and Thai royal cuisine, among others. Foodies in particular swear by Phuket’s fusion of Thai and Chinese cuisines, the natural result of the island’s Chinese/Peranakan community centered around Phuket Town.

The local food scene has earned Phuket recognition as a "Creative City of Gastronomy" by UNESCO, owing to the variety of dishes and dining styles. High-end diners can take in a meal at one of the island’s Michelin-starred restaurants, while budget eaters can count on Phuket Town's hawker-style premises that resemble similar setups in Singapore and Malaysia . The street food scene in Patong helps balance out the town’s raucous nightlife, and many resorts offer in-house dining experiences overlooking the sea.

Learn more with our guides to foods to try in Phuket , Phuket's best restaurants , and Phuket's nightlife scene .

Where to Stay

The vast majority of hotels and resorts in Phuket are located around the west coast, as Phuket’s top beaches can be found there. One exception is Phuket Town, whose affordable hotels are offset by its considerable distance from the beaches.

The graceful Sino-Portuguese buildings, cheap food, and activities around Phuket Town make it an excellent choice for history nerds and foodies. Meanwhile, budget travelers and partygoers should look for accommodations around Patong, home to the island’s hottest nightlife scene and most affordable budget hotels. Hotels around Karon Beach offer a happy medium for tourists who like staying close to the beach, but abhor Patong’s congestion and party-happy atmosphere. The relaxed energy around Karon appeals to families, couples, and seniors.

For a selection of Phuket accommodation options, check out this list of Phuket’s top hotels.

Getting There

Some 16 million people fly into Phuket International Airport from all over Asia and Europe. Located at the northern end of Phuket, the airport sits over 20 miles from the island’s main tourist stretches. If you’re flying in during Phuket’s peak season, be aware that it will take over an hour to get to or from your Phuket resort, so plan accordingly.

Phuket is connected by bridge to the Thai mainland, allowing domestic travelers to take the bus from cities around Thailand to the island. Most cross-country buses arrive and depart to/from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 on Thepkasattri Road in Ratsada.

Despite Phuket’s relatively low crime rate, some risks remain for visitors to the island. The beaches hide dangerous riptides and jellyfish, whereas locals might also take offense to fighting words or undue talk about politics or religion.

When hanging around the beaches, keep the following threats in view.

  • Beware of riptides. During monsoon season, Phuket’s beaches hide a nasty secret: deadly riptides that can pull you out to the open sea, or pull you under to drown. Patong, Karon, and Kamala beaches are notorious for these. If you see red flags flying on any Phuket beach, do not go into the water.
  • Listen for tsunami warnings. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami hit Phuket hard, killing over 5,000 people. Today, an advanced tsunami warning system watches over Phuket; warnings will be sent via broadcast media and SMS on local cellphones, giving you plenty of time to head to higher ground.

Thai locals are some of the most easygoing people on earth, but remember that their patience can be severely tested, too. Here’s how to stay on locals’ good side—and how to stay out of trouble otherwise:

  • Never get angry or aggressive . Avoid conflict wherever possible. Thais do not go for pranks or humiliating jokes at their expense, and they also look down on Westerners picking fights. You should also avoid political talk—Thailand has a lese majeste law that penalizes insulting talk about their royal family, so steer clear of that topic in polite conversation.
  • Don’t do drugs. Thailand has extremely punitive laws against drug trafficking and use. You can spend years in prison if caught with even a small amount of prohibited drugs, or get the death penalty at worst.
  • Keep your eyes open for scams . Tourist locations tend to attract a fair number of scammers, and Phuket is no exception.

Money Saving Tips

Even as luxe hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants have taken over, they haven’t crowded the backpackers out yet—budget travelers can still find plenty of ways to stretch their dollar. Follow these simple rules to get the most value out of your Phuket trip:

  • Eat the way locals do. Get a meal at a Patong food hall, or hunker down to street food in Phuket Town. The cheapest meals can be found at wet markets in your vicinity, where you can get rice, meat, and a drink for no more than 100 baht ($3.30).
  • Use local transportation. Look up the songthaew routes around your hotel and your preferred destinations, and ride them whenever possible. Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis will also let you haggle the price down to a certain extent.
  • Visit Phuket in the low season. Between May and October, Phuket gets the brunt of the monsoon season. Prices are at their lowest for both accommodations and transportation, though, which can save you money in what is arguably Thailand’s priciest town.
  • Get a local SIM card for your phone. Assuming your phone is compatible with the local networks, buying a prepaid SIM card will let you surf the web and call home without breaking the bank. You have your choice of three brands: AIS , DTAC , and TrueMove . All are available at the airport, or at any convenience store on the island.
  • Drink Thai-made beers. Chang, Leo, and Singha beers are much cheaper than Australian or European beers around Phuket—and they’re arguably just as good.

Patong is the most popular tourist destination in the province of Phuket. With picture-perfect coastal views, stunning white sand beaches, a relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful scenic surroundings, I can see why! If you’re searching for Phuket nightlife, Patong is where you want to be.

Karon beach is found on the west coast of Phuket island and is the second-largest tourist beach. Karon is just the place if you’re looking for out-of-this-world views, inviting turquoise waters and long stretches of white sand shores!

Staying with locals in Phuket  through a homestay is another awesome (and cheap) accommodation option, and it comes with a much more authentic feeling.

Phuket Old Town | Wat Chalong Temple | The Big Buddha | Kata Noi Beach | Prompthep Cape | Laem Hin Pier

In and around Phuket, day 1 is all about getting to know your immediate surroundings. Then, we move down to southern Phuket, before returning to the city for a seaside dinner. Phuket city accommodation is preferred here!

8:00 am – Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town is a must-see place in Phuket and provides you with different shapes and sizes of old Sino-Portuguese splendors, plenty of funky shops, and boutique cafes! Explore and find some of the most unlikely places that will surprise and delight at the same time.

Phuket Old Town is the heart of Phuket’s island and also happens to be the capital. This town is far from ordinary, and offers so much more than you might think! Grab breakfast, and get ready for an awesome day.

Phuket Town displays attractive and aesthetic buildings that date back to the 1800s. There is a unique blend of colonial and Chinese architecture, joint with a tangible quaintness. This makes for a fascinating and eye-opening morning spent sauntering around Phuket’s Old Town. Expect the unexpected and don’t forget to take plenty of pictures !

  • Cost – Free
  • How long should I stay here? 1.5 hours
  • Getting there – Either you’re staying nearby, or you can taxi or bus. Phuket city is the centre so it’s not hard to get to!

11:00 am – Wat Chalong Temple

Wat Chalong Temple

This gorgeous temple showcases the brilliance of Phuket’s architectural creativity as well as the rich cultural history of religion on this island. Wat Chalong Temple is formally known as Wat Chaiyathararam and is a huge part of Phuket’s heritage!

Wat Chalong is the largest, most revered and most visited Buddhist temple in the whole of Phuket island. This temple was built at the beginning of the 19th century and is definitely at the top of our must-see places in Phuket.

You will see that the tallest building on the grounds of this stunning temple is the 60-meter tall stupa that shelters a magnificent bone fragment of the Lord Buddha. The walls and ceilings of the temple are adorned with beautiful and spiritually significant paintings that retrace the story of Buddha’s legendary life. Each of the three floors and also full of large donated golden statues.

  • Cost – Free, but donations are appreciated
  • How long should I stay here? 1 hour or less
  • Getting there – Grabbing a taxi or bus from Phuket is relatively easy. It’s well-known so you shouldn’t have problems getting there!

12:30 pm – Phuket Big Buddha

Phuket Big Buddha

The Phuket Big Buddha , otherwise known as The Great Buddha of Phuket, is a nobly seated Maravijaya Buddha statue in the south of Phuket island. The formal and official name is Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakiri, shortened to Ming Mongkol Buddha. Find this marvelous statue sitting atop Nakkerd Hill.

The Big Buddha is a 45-meter-tall white statue made entirely out of marble and is visible from anywhere in the southern part of Phuket as it protrudes the skies. Visiting this outstanding landmark is at the top of most must-do-in-Phuket lists and we can easily understand why! This is a monument that pays homage to the spiritual history of Phuket and it is a sobering experience to go and see it! The views from this mountain also happen to be breathtaking.

Mostly built on people’s donation in 2004, The Big Buddha Phuket is actually still under construction. If you feel like doing something to help to finish the broad base of the Buddha, you can sponsor a piece of white marble!

Make sure that you get there before it closes at 7pm!

  • How long should I stay here? 1.5 to 2 hours (with lunch!)
  • Getting there – Taxi, it’s about a 20-minute drive from Wat Chalong. It’s a 6km walk, but up a hill and in the day might not be the best idea.

2:30 pm – Kata Noi Beach

phuket thailande voyage

Kata Noi is without a doubt one of the best beaches in Phuket. The white sands, gorgeous watercolour, and rising cliffs make this a top place to relax for the afternoon! The area gets waves good enough for surfers between May and October and is both pet and nudist-friendly. Kata Noi Beach is perched on the West Coast of Phuket, not too far from the Big Buddha.

Kata Noi is about 700 metres long, which means that if you’re looking for a bit of space, there is certainly that. There are also a load of activities to take part in; banana boating jet skiing and snorkelling are all possible past times here.

Hiking up to the nearby Karon viewpoint is a great way to put the beach into perspective. Enjoy some top-class views, and get familiar with some Thai jungle scenery!

  • Cost – Free (it’s a beach!)
  • How long should I stay here? around 3 hours. Get comfy!
  • Getting there – It’s half an hour’s drive again from the Phuket Big Buddha. Grab a taxi if you can!

6 pm – Prompthep Cape

phuket thailande voyage

If you’re looking for a gorgeous sunset to finish the day off, then I have properly nailed this itinerary. The sunsets at Prompthep Cape are spectacular, but sadly this draws a pretty formidable tourist crowd. You can get a people-free shot by walking to the end of the Cape, but this isn’t an easy walk!

It’s at this point in the day when I start recommending alcohol. Bukito by Promthep Restaurant can offer dinner and drinks, but I’d recommend just going for a beverage or two – I’ve got a great dinner spot lined up for later. The Promthep lighthouse (also a small museum) is worth taking a look at, but it’s not worth staying much longer. Grab a photo, enjoy the sun setting, and get out of there!

People-watching here is excellent, since everyone is just waiting for a sunset photo.

  • Getting there – Sorry to say it’s another Taxi or drive from kata Noi beach. Takes about 20 minutes.

8 pm – Laem Hin Pier

phuket thailande voyage

This is our evening endpoint. Located just north of Phuket City, you jump on a free shuttle boat which will take you out to a pier filled with some of the best local seafood places on the island.

Laem Hin is a vast wooden construction, but can still get reasonably busy. The seafood here is just amazing, so it’s understandable. It’s also cheap! So if you’re here with a family you can really go for the banquet experience.

After a long day, you’ll be ready to relax, so grab a beer or two, then head back to your Phuket Town accommodation for a good night’s rest. You’re going to need it!

  • Cost – Pay for what you buy (<$10)
  • How long should I stay here? around 2 hours
  • Getting there – Long drive back to Phuket town (just under an hour). Then take the ferry shuttle over to the restaurant.

phuket thailande voyage

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

Bang Pae Waterfall | Sirinat National Park | Bang Tao Beach | The Banzaan Market | Paradise Beach | Bangla Road

Day 2 is all about tripping, specifically day tripping, and getting out into the furthest reaches of North and Eastern Phuket. Staying near Patong beach will allow you to make the most of this day.

8:30 am – Bang Pae Waterfall

Bang Pae Waterfall

Bang Pae waterfall is one of the top three best-known waterfalls in Phuket, perhaps four if you include a tiny one in Layan Bay, but only three are significant: Bang Pae, Kathu Waterfall and Tonsai Waterfall.

This is a must-see waterfall and getting there is an absolute adventure! Travel through the dense rainforests of Phuket, and see indigenous birds in their natural habitat. The waterfall is on part of a National Park which means you will also see some of the most spectacular jungle fauna!

Bang Pae waterfall is breathtaking and remarkably easy to reach. Take a stroll and see Thai teens and families playing in the stream as you walk up the hill. Visiting a waterfall is a wonderful way to spend a day during your weekend in Phuket, as this is when it is most busy and attracts the locals.

Grab a quick hotel/ hostel breakfast before embarking on this early-morning adventure!

  • Cost – The entrance fee is THB 200 ($6,34) for the national park, and then you will pay either a THB 20 (63c) parking fee for a motorbike or THB 30 (95c) for a car.
  • How long should I stay here? 2 to 3 hours
  • Getting there – Worth hiring a taxi man for the day if I’m honest, but you can bike it too! It’s a 40-minute journey from Phuket Town

11:30 am – Sirinat National Park

Sirinat National Park

The picturesque Sirinat National Park is found on the northwestern coast of Phuket Island.

There is such an atmosphere of peacefulness and so many new types of vegetation and wildlife for you to stumble across! Sirinat National Park stretches over a large amount of pine-fringed beaches, including Nai Thon, Nai Yang, and Mai Khao Beach.

Mai Khao Beach is famous for being the exotic home of nesting sea turtles, such as the leatherbacks and hawksbills! You can also explore tropical coral reefs that are clustered in the clear waters offshore and escape into massive mangrove forests in Sai Kaew Beach.

This is a truly amazing place to be, but it is rural. Pack some snacks for your day before you arrive. Lunch isn’t until later!

  • Cost – The entrance fee is THB 200 ($6,34) per adult and THB 100 ($3,17) per child.
  • Getting there – Sirinat National Park isn’t far from the Bang Pae Waterfall. Hop in your car, you’ll be there in 20 minutes!

Insider Tip: Keep an eye out for the birdlife, many famous and rare birds can be sighted within the canopies of Sirinat National Park! One of the most popular is the Kingfisher.

2 pm – Bang Tao Beach

phuket thailande voyage

If you fancy a slice of the untouched, then Bang Tao beach is for you! An amazingly quiet, pristine beach, it is a great place to doze away the hours of the early afternoon. You’ll need to – things heat up later.

Bang Tao beach is one of the longest beaches on Phuket island. It is relatively uncluttered, and much more peaceful than many of the other beaches in Phuket. There are great fancy restaurants at hotels, but there are some midrange and cheaper places too. Stop off for a relaxing lunch to rejuvenate. Since the beach is so long, I’d recommend heading for the Southern section. There are more places to eat, and it makes the next section of your journey shorter.

Sit back, relax, grab some lunch, and then spread out the beach towel for a little early afternoon sunbathing.

  • Cost – Free!
  • How long should I stay here? About 2 hours
  • Getting there – Just head due south down the coast, it’s on the way to Patong beach. Takes around half an hour.

4:30 pm – The Banzaan Market

phuket thailande voyage

Get swept into the energetic and vibrant mass energy here and explore a new way of shopping. The Banzaan Market is a modern-looking Thai fresh market found on Sai Kor Road, behind the Jungceylon.

Take the time to check into your Patong beach accommodation, and then head back out to the Banzaan market!

You will basically come across all kinds of produce and crafts that you could expect at any other street market, but the Banzaan Market is hosted in a much more pleasant envious mentioned and is famous for being so well organized.

The locals go all out to showcase their best products, and you will be amazed at the bargains you can hunt for! This is a cultural way to end the last of your 2 days in Phuket!

  • Cost – Entrance is free
  • How long should I stay here? About 1 hour
  • Getting there – Short taxi (or walk), after a half-hour drive from Bang Tao beach.

6 pm – Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach

The drinks are delicious, but the food is even better. Choose from their vast range of both Indian and Thai cuisine! We suggest going wild here and trying as many different dishes as you can!

Welcome to paradise! This magnificent and rather private beach is less than 200m in length and hosts a little rocky headland that kind of makes it two beaches if you want to get technical. Paradise Beach is a cosy and tiny cove near Patong and is famous for having lush and calm waters that feature a soft seabed mostly throughout the year.

Sunbathe or stroll the pristine white sand and be shaded by nodding palm trees, you will feel as if you are part of a photo shoot for a holiday brochure! Laze and allow yourself to emerge into the peaceful, picturesque environment that Paradise Beach provides.

Being the home of Paradise Beach Club, this magical cove even has a great choice of facilities, including upbeat restaurants, bars, sea kayaks, beach chairs and so much more. You can even get your party on and join one of Phuket’s only Koh Phangan-style beach parties !

I’d recommend grabbing dinner here, before heading back to Patong to experience the night life.

  • Cost – The entrance fee is THB 200 ($6,34) per person.
  • How long should I stay here? Around 2 hours
  • Getting there – Paradise beach is about 20 minutes from the Banzaan Market, on the West coast.

10 pm – Bangla Road

Bangla Road

Bangla Road in Patong is notoriously named for its highly energetic and lively nightlife! Bangla Road is a  must-visit while you’re in Phuket and you will find the experience to be unforgettable. The nightlife is at the top of its game and offers more clubs than anywhere else in Phuket! Bangla Road is also packed with a ridiculous amount of vibrantly lit bars, go-go bars, girly bars, and relaxed ex-pat bars – think lots of drinks, bizarre spectacles and music!

As the sun goes down, Bangla road becomes closed off to traffic, making it a wonderful space for easy pub-hopping! The neon lights and bars start to come alive and the music from all the bars starts to intertwine with each other.

Have a noisy, fun and energetic night out in this famous street and have a night that will open your eyes to a whole new world! This road in itself is an experience to be had and it can feel like you’re headed into a fantasy land. There are many side roads (called Soi’s in Thai) that lead off from Bangla Road. Here you will find even more bars, as well as mini clubs.

  • How long should I stay here? All night, all day who knows? Tomorrow does happen at some point though so try and get a little sleep xx
  • Getting there – Back to the hotel from Paradise beach (car/taxi 20 minutes), then walk out to the town from your hotel!

Insider Tip: When partying the night away, expect to be hit on by a few ‘women of the night’ and even ‘men of the night’ as Bangala Road is also the sex capital of Phuket. I would strongly recommend that you turn them down, as not all of it is hugely ethical.

Phuket Itinerary

Lub D Phuket Patong

Lub D Phuket Patong Is one of the most EPIC hostels in Phuket! This magnificent Hostel was Voted in 2017 as the “Best New Hostel” in the world, and it must be seen to be believed.

Patong Beach | Phang Nga Bay | Koh Panyi | James Bond Island

Day 3 is when we ditch the land and look seawards. Think island hopping, but better because I’m in charge…

Accommodation is up to you here, but staying near Phang Nga Bay might be easiest!

9 am – Patong Beach

phuket thailande voyage

A lazy morning is probably not just desired but needed after the previous evening’s revelry. Take an easy stroll down to the beach for a morning swim to wake you up. Grab some street food or breakfast too!

An army marches on its stomach, and there is still lots to do today! Rent a beach chair, drool on the sand a little, but ready yourself! If you’re feeling refreshed already, there is paragliding, jet skiing, and other beachy activities to get you pumped.

Take advantage of a beach massage if you really want to get the ball rolling, and there are always people who will sell you a smoothie by the side of the road. Try one! Patong beach is very much a love-or-hate thing. It is busy but super beautiful. If you don’t mind other people, then you should have a great time.

  • Getting there – Short taxi, or walk from your Patong Beach accommodation.

12:00 am – Phang Nga Bay

phuket thailande voyage

Okay, this is where a visit to Phuket (although already brilliant) becomes truly legendary. Phang Nga Bay itself is made up of hundreds of different points of interest, and choosing which ones to do is entirely up to you!

I’ve included Koh Panyi and James Bond Island on the itinerary list because they are must-haves, but get exploring and you’ll have an awesome time here!

The cave of the reclining Buddha is a great place to start before heading over to Koh Panyi for some lunch. After James Bond Island, think about heading to Laem Haad Beach, Koh Panak, Koh Hong, Kudu Yai or the Koh Yao Islands. Since Phang Nga Bay has so much to do, and it’s relatively spaced apart, it’s worth getting either a private tour boat or joining one with others. There’s so much to see, and it’s not worth missing out on!

  • Cost – 200 Baht ($6) for entrance, plus boat costs
  • How long should I stay here? All day, but try the reclining Buddha first (around 1 hour)
  • Getting there – Sadly, transfer over to Phang Nga from Patong takes around 2 hours. It is super worth it though! Hotels will often offer tours of Phang Nga bay, or you can join a private one!

1:30 pm – Koh Panyi

phuket thailande voyage

This fishing village is almost entirely built on stilts. There is brilliant seafood, which makes it a great lunchtime stop, but people know about it (so it can get crowded too). It’s up to you if you want to luncheon here, but sitting down and taking an easy lunch can be a great way to ease the effects of the two-hour drive in the morning.

It’s a pretty crazy village, and the natural scenery surrounding it is absolutely stunning. There is even a mosque on the island, which is worth having a look at. However, aside from walking the town and trying the seafood, there is not much else to do. Enjoy the environment and prepare for bigger and better things!

  • Cost – To hire a private boat to the island it’s 1500 Baht (around $40). There are regular ferries which are much cheaper.
  • How long should I stay here? under 2 hours
  • Getting there – You can catch a longtail boat from Surakul pier, which takes around 20 minutes.

3:00 pm – James Bond Island

phuket thailande voyage

The famous James Bond Island (or Khao Phing Kan) gathered a lot of international interest, and now gets swarmed with tourists…

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it! It is a stunning place to be, and the cute coves and beaches make a visit very enjoyable. There are some interesting things to buy too, as vendors inevitably follow the tourist crowd.

James Bond island gets mixed reviews since many people go there. Like the Colosseum or Eiffel tower, people just want a money shot before clearing off. However, it is super pretty, and it’s worth going if you’re in the area anyway.

After you’ve enjoyed this tourist trap, I’d recommend chilling at a more relaxed beach until the bay closes at six, or going back to your hotel. If you fancy something active, there is a great range of outdoorsy ways you can explore the magical environment of Phang Nga Bay!

  • Cost – Boats can range between 400 and 2000 Baht (for a private)
  • How long should I stay here? an hour or less
  • Getting there – Boat from Koh Panyi

If you have the time, here are some things that you might want to squeeze in. Alternatively, substitute (or add in) some of these amazing gems to give your trip a distinctly “you” factor…

phuket thailande voyage

Koh Racha, AKA Raya Island, is an island about 20 km south of Phuket. There aren’t any roads or cars, which makes this a haven for naturists. Lots of swimming, snorkelling and beaching is clearly on the cards.

Whilst you can certainly cover most of Raya Island in a single-day trip, if you really want to get a handle on this island, then I’d suggest staying over. There are some really really nice resorts, hotels and hostels that will have everything you need for a great stay.

The amazing Patok beach is a great place to sunbathe, and there are plenty of other things to take part in on the island. Fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling, and jet skiing could form part of a top-class day.

  • How long should I stay here? All day?
  • Getting there – 30 minute speedboat from Phuket

Phi Phi Islands

phuket thailande voyage

The Phi Phi Islands were popularised by Leonardo Dicaprio and his pretty face. After he had been there, suddenly everyone else wanted to be there too, and it quickly became a tourist hotspot.

There are several islands in the Phi Phi archipelago, including the main island of Phi Phi Don. Bamboo Island is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, pristine natural state, and amazing snorkelling and diving. Ko Yung (Mosquito Island) is similar but slightly larger. Both these islands are uninhabited.

If you’re looking for some truly unbelievable beaches and marine life, then the Phi Phi Islands are a top destination for you.

  • How long should I stay here? Worth spending a night here. Lots to do!
  • Getting there – Boat from Phuket City

Phuket Simon Cabaret

phuket thailande voyage

Experience something that you have never seen before with this intimate theater extravaganza! The show is a must-see attraction during your travels in Phuket! Witness an extravagant cabaret show with dancers in sparkly attire and even sparklier headdresses.

One of the oddest aspects that makes this show unusual is that it is probably the biggest “transvestite” cabaret show to be found in Phuket. This show features a spectacular musical floor show being performed by the world-famous “ladyboys” of Simon Cabaret.

See for yourself! You will be surprised how elaborate the costumes and makeup are, and how hard it becomes to tell the difference! Stunning costumes, bright lights, an excellent sound system, and expensive decorative sets are all part of this theatrical event that is not to be missed!

One of the coolest things to do in Phuket is to have a glamorous night out at the Simon Cabaret Show. See a variety of acts by dazzling men dressed as beautiful women complete with eye-catching costumes!

  • Cost – Tickets are THB 600 ($18,83).
  • How long should I stay here? 2 hours
  • Getting there – Taxi, or walk in Phuket City

Phuket Sunday Night Market

phuket thailande voyage

The Phuket Sunday Market is known for having a hugely varied selection of curios and secondhand items on sale in a bustling market atmosphere! This is very different from the usual local markets where you can find copied T-shirts and cheap jeans. Hosted from the starting point at Thepkasattri Road and stretching all along the streets to Phuket Road.

All of the old Sino-Portuguese houses along Thalang road are brightly lit with ever-changing colours that add an extra spark to the festive mood created by this one-of-a-kind market! This beautiful historical street is very proud to be the first road on the entire island that is completely free of any large and ugly electric cables hanging around looking like a gigantic mess.

The market is an opportunity for you to try one of the Phuket specialities and explore your boundaries with cuisine! You can find a good mix of sweets and snacks to nibble as you walk. One of the most strange things is the horseshoe crab salad, which is not for the light-hearted!

  • How long should I stay here? No more than an hour or two. The market is open from 4 pm til 9 pm
  • Getting there – Taxi or walk

a girl sleeping in a hammock on a tropical beach in thailand

Phuket has a welcoming, warm and tropical climate. The beautiful temperatures are wayyy hotter than they are cold, and even when it’s cold, it’s really still quite humid.

The extremely rainy Monsoon season begins mid-May and goes on till October, but don’t let this deter you. This is when Phuket is quiet, so you can experience a more authentic cultural side of the places you visit. It’s the perfect time to visit Phuket’s museums too.

Phuket’s high tourist season is from November to February. During this time, the days are sunny and you won’t have a drop of rain! Making it perfect for lazy afternoons, sightseeing, hiking and water sports.

When getting from place to place in Phuket, there are several options to consider. Tuk-tuks are found everywhere in Thailand, so you will easily be able to hire one at any given time to get you from A  to B. Be sure your driver understands where you want to go and check for an authentic license before you accept your ride!

Hiring out a bike is an excellent option when travelling in Phuket, and is ideal for couples or solo travellers. There are many businesses that hire out bikes, and most hotels offer this service or will know a company.

a girl taking a selfie wearing a helmet as she rides on the back of a scooter.

Taxis are found easily, so hiring one is a good option and the prices are usually very reasonable! The locals are very used to tourists visiting Phuket, and can share some knowledge with you on the coolest places.

Walking in Phuket is beautiful, each place is pumping with vibrancy and culture! Meet the locals, find new spots and enjoy the street food. A lot of places in Phuket are easy to walk to, and it is well worth taking a stroll in some of the more culturally rich and scenic areas.

Packing for a tropical climate is the easiest packing you can do – couple of shorts and a t-shirt, and you’re good to go. Packing for thailand is usually straightforward.

The vast majority of the time, Phuket is a very safe place to visit, but it is good to know a few safety tips too. Be sure to keep your wits about you when dealing with locals after a few drinks, as things can get ugly if you lose your cool and start shouting or behaving like an ass. For the ladies, don’t drink alone or walk the streets at night by yourself, and watch out for drink spiking.

a traditional Thai boat in the ocean of Krabi, Thailand

There are also some safety precautions to heed when swimming in the famous ocean waters of Phuket. Although Phuket’s main beaches are now well-staffed with lifeguards, there are still a number of drownings that occur each year. When the beaches are lined with red flags, these are a warning of strong waves and undertow.

Other safety measures would be simple things like, wearing a helmet if you rent a motorbike in Phuket, driving cautiously and never driving drunk as Phuket has the highest rate of car accidents in Thailand.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Phuket

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Beaches [ edit ]

Understand [ edit ].

Phuket lies in balmy Andaman Sea waters on Thailand's Indian Ocean coastline, 862 km south of Bangkok. The island-province enjoys great popularity as a travel destination. Most beaches are on the west coast, with Phuket Town to the southeast and the airport in the north.

Phuket used to derive its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoys a rich and colourful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign traders' ship's logs. Phuket's top earner now is tourism, which has transformed the island into Thailand's wealthiest province. Expect prices to be a bit higher than on the mainland.

The west coast of Phuket was hit severely by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, but almost no evidence of the damage remains.

Climate [ edit ]

Phuket is hot and humid throughout the year. The hot season is generally considered to be from Mar to early May. During the summer monsoon season from May-Oct, mornings and afternoons are sunny and clear, but it tends to rain in the evenings and water clarity goes down. Locals consider Nov-Feb the "cool" season, and the weather is quite tolerable. It's comparable to Florida's summer weather in temperature and intensity of rain storms: 25-33 degrees Celsius, scudding clouds, short and thunderous rainfalls in the afternoons and evenings. Surfing is possible off the western beaches.

Culture [ edit ]

Phuket is a melange of Buddhists, Thai-Chinese, Muslims, and Moken people. The majority of the population in the rural areas are Muslim. Outside of the provincial towns, the rural folk speak with a thick Southern dialect which is difficult for even other Thais to understand. The booming tourist economy over the past decade has led to many young people leading lives similar to those in Bangkok. Altogether, the lifestyle of the urban Thai-Chinese resembles that of their Bangkok brethren.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

There are very frequent flights from Bangkok and direct flights to many other airports in the region. A wide variety of airlines have year-round direct flights to Phuket from elsewhere in Asia, as well as the Middle East, India, and Australia. Other destinations (mostly in Europe) have seasonal charter flights.

The airport is notionally divided into Terminals 1 and 2, with some charter and low-cost operators using the second, but these are only a short distance apart and connected by an air-conditioned walkway.

International flights [ edit ]

  • Australia - Jetstar flies from Melbourne and Sydney .
  • Cambodia - Thai AirAsia flies from Siem Reap
  • China - Lots of flights including from Beijing , Zhengzhou , Shenzhen , Xi'an , and Kunming .
  • Hong Kong - Cathay Pacific , HK Express and Air Asia (resuming March 2023) run flights
  • India - IndiGo flies from Bangalore , Delhi and Mumbai . Go First flies from all those locations and Kolkata too.
  • Malaysia - FireFly flies from Penang, using small ATR turboprop aircraft. AirAsia , Batik Air Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines have flights from Kuala Lumpur . Qatar Airways also operates daily flights from Kuala Lumpur.
  • Qatar - Qatar Airways operates direct daily flights from Doha
  • Singapore - Thai AirAsia , Singapore Airlines and their low-cost brand, Scoot as well as Jetstar Asia fly there.
  • Taiwan - EVA Air operates non-stop flights from Taipei to Phuket.
  • Switzerland - Edelweiss Air operates seasonal direct flights from Zurich .
  • South Korea - Asiana Airlines flies non-stop from Seoul with connections from New York . Jin Air and Korean Airways also fly direct from Seoul.
  • Vietnam - VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines fly from Ho Chi Minh City .

Charter flights [ edit ]

There are many charter flights in high season from European and Asian countries. Many charter flights from Russia are suspended, as of Nov 2022.

Domestic flights [ edit ]

Several domestic airlines fly here, including Nok Air , Thai Air Asia , Bangkok Airways and Thai VietJet Air.

Thai Airways flies from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport several times every day, and once daily from Chiang Mai (but there are no direct flights in the opposite direction). Additionally, they sell tickets from/to many domestic and international destinations with stopovers in Bangkok , which are usually cheaper (especially international) than if you book separate tickets. Worth checking if you book just a few days before flight, as low-cost airlines may cost just a few less in this situation, but you get world-famous Thai Airways service.

Air Asia fly from Phuket to Chiang Mai direct, twice a day at 10:35 and 19:20, affording an opportunity to combine a beach holiday with experiencing the wildlife and exotic cultures of northern Thailand. From Chiang Mai to Phuket flights depart at 13:00 and 21:45. They fly from two cities in Isaan as well, daily from Udon Thani (handy for a trip into Laos ) and four times per week from Ubon Ratchathani.

Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on direct flights between Phuket and U-Tapao (Pattaya/Sattahip) and Ko Samui . They also have 6 daily flights from Bangkok . Fares are usually the same as Thai Airways, but sometimes they have very inexpensive promotional fares.

Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways fly to Suvarnabhumi (pronounced: soo-Var-na-phoom), whereas Nok Air flies from Don Mueang Airport. This may be of importance when you have a connecting flight.

Airport transport [ edit ]

To get from the airport to your destination, there are several options:

Private bus service

The Phuket Smart Bus connects the airport with Rawai Beach and all points in between along the west coast. Fares are 100 baht. This is also an excellent way to get around the west coast.

Municipal airport bus

  • It's air conditioned and operates every day 08:30 - 18:30 with hourly departures. From the airport to its terminus at Phuket Town bus station costs 100 baht (Nov 2022) and takes 1-1.5 hours. Local buses run from there and Ranong St Market to all the major beaches until around 18:00. After getting off the bus just cross the street and wait for the continuing bus there. It is a very convenient and comfortable spot, with no touts or hustlers, plenty of shade and a minimart for drinks and snacks. The bus will stop anywhere along its route upon signalling the driver. See Airport Bus Phuket .

If you are going to take the municipal airport bus from Phuket to the airport in the afternoon (especially the 16:30 and 17:30 buses) you should allow yourself plenty of time. With dozens of schoolchildren getting on and off during weekdays and/or congested traffic the bus is frequently delayed en route.

They are basically door-to-door shared taxis and a good value. They will get you to your destination much faster than the municipal/government buses. E.g. to Phuket town, to Patong and to Kata Beach. When you get off the plane, don't dally, because when the minibuses fill up, they leave. If you miss the first group of them, you may have to wait until the next plane comes in, because they don't leave until they're full.

The minibuses will stop at a travel agent about halfway to Patong. They'll ask everyone to get out (you don't have to) and then they'll ask you where you're staying, and they'll try to sell you a hotel or overpriced tours on the guise that they are a government agency. You're not obligated to use the hotels they push. Just say you already booked a hotel, and tell them the name. (If you don't yet have a hotel, just say "Holiday Inn".) They will inform the driver, and he/she will drop you off at the hotel. This is a little annoying, but it's over in 10 minutes, and you're on your way again. Any travel agent can arrange a minibus ride for the way back to the airport.

Metered (yellow) taxis

  • Aka "Taxi Meter" - Turn right as you exit the airport building (ignore the touts) and you'll see a stand at the end of the walkway. Tell your destination to the staff at the stand and they will give you a paper with the taxi driver number for you to keep in case you need to report a problem. The rate is what is displayed by the meter plus the airport fee. You may stumble upon a freelance taxi driver who will take you from the airport to Patong for a flat fee. If the driver is pleasant, you may wish to ask for his mobile number for the return trip later.

Limousine (blue) taxis

They are expensive. The airport co-op booth tucked away towards the back is a little cheaper than the competition. Despite the name, most "limousines" are Toyota Camrys with leather seats, though you may get a Mercedes. It is also likely that your limousine will stop at a travel agent in order to sell you hotel rooms and/or tours. Before you purchase your fare, insist that you do not want to stop at any travel agency along the way. (They will try to legitimise stopping at the travel agency by insisting that "the driver must sign in" or "the driver needs to stop here for directions")

By train [ edit ]

There are no direct train services to Phuket. But many trains leave from Bangkok central station going south. The most comfortable are the sleeper trains. Travellers by train disembark at Phun Phin railway station near the city of Surat Thani and continue for another 5 hours by regular bus to Phuket. Do not buy the bus ticket until you actually see the bus and can make sure it is not standing room only, as it picks up passengers at the popular Ko Samui ferry. If full, wait for the next one.

By bus [ edit ]

phuket thailande voyage

Buses to mainland destinations including Bangkok , Chumphon , Hat Yai , Krabi , Phang Nga , Ranong , Satun , Sungai Kolok and Surat Thani use the BKS terminal off Phang Nga Rd in Phuket Town .

The most reliable buses from Bangkok are the public BKS buses from the Southern Bus Terminal to Phuket. The journey takes 13 hours. There are also some private bus companies, Phuket Travel Tour, Phuket Central Tour, and Phuket Travel Service. Khao San Road operations have a bad reputation for theft, often turn out to include a "surprise" transfer to a minibus at Surat Thani, and are best avoided.

From Phuket bus terminal to your final destination, you can take a motorcycle taxi, tuk-tuk, meter-taxi, or bus.

A local bus goes to the main beaches. It's not unusual for the tuk-tuk drivers at the bus terminal to tell arriving travellers that the local bus service has finished, even though it hasn't. The bus stop is near the market in the old town. From Bus Terminal 1, make a right onto Phang Nga Rd. Continue down Phang Nga until it terminates at Yaowarat Rd, then turn left. Within a few steps you will see a roundabout. Once at the roundabout, keep right. By keeping right, you will find Ranong Rd. Within 100–200 m you will find the local bus stop.

There are two bus terminals in Phuket; a small, old one in town, and one huge modern one 4 km north of town. You can take a 10 baht pink songthaew (leaves every 30 minutes) between the two. There are also 3 regular songthaew lines within Phuket Town, and both bus stations are served by them. There is a very useful big map just outside the bus stations (look where the taxis are waiting at the old bus station, and at the very rear, not towards the entrance, at the new bus station) that displays the three songthaew routes within Phuket town. Last one at 19:00.

Before exiting the Phuket bus terminal, grab a free Phuket map from the information window. While supplies may always not be on hand, the map is a great way to get your bearing before jumping-off.

By car [ edit ]

Phuket is directly connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge. From Bangkok, take Hwy 4 through Nakhon Pathom, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, through Ranong province’s Kra Buri and Kapoe districts, Phang Nga Province’s Takua Pa and Thai Muang districts and onto Phuket Island. The total distance is 862 km. You may be better off getting to Phuket by public transport and renting a car on the island.

By boat [ edit ]

phuket thailande voyage

Ferry services connect from Rassada Port in Phuket Town to Ko Phi Phi and to Krabi Province on the mainland twice a day, taking 90 to 120 minutes. It's usually a pleasant ride, but can be rather bumpy when it's windy.

From the harbour, you could avoid the minibuses and take a songthaew to Phuket Town. If it doesn't show up at the bus stop right outside the terminal, you'll have to walk past the gate outside the harbour and along the road, turning left at the first T-junction, about 600 m, then on the main road you can catch a cheap songthaew. There's a picture of all the routes posted just outside the terminal near the bus stop inside the complex. Last one leaves at 19:00.

There are speedboats from/to Ko Racha (45 minutes), Phi Phi (1 - 1.5 hours), the Similan Islands (about 3 hours) and other islands. Boats and yachts can be chartered all year from Phuket at Chalong Bay , Rawai Beach, the Boot Lagoon, the Yacht Haven and Royal Phuket Marina. Boats from Phi Phi and Phang Nga can be found by visiting the local beaches. A search for Phuket speedboat charters will turn up many companies providing inter-island charters and services.

Phi Phi speedboat transfers (no tour) are provided by the Zeavola Resort, which has dedicated speedboats for Phi Phi transfers. Most companies doing Phi Phi speedboat tours will not accommodate transfers that include baggage due to space limitations.

Prices for speedboat charters to/from Phuket depend on distance/size of boat.

It's possible to visit Phuket by cruise ship . However with the collapse of Star Cruises, the main operator, options are severely limited. As of Feb 2023, no cruise ships are scheduled to visit.

Get around [ edit ]

phuket thailande voyage

Phuket is a large island and you need some form of transport to get around. Luckily, there are a variety of transport options for various budgets. Hotels generally offer shuttle bus services into Phuket Town, and also have taxi and car hire facilities.

Songthaew [ edit ]

This is the cheapest public transport in Phuket. Within Phuket Town buses run pink, and beyond, to other beaches and areas, go blue. Almost all buses display their destination in English.

Pink - fare 15 baht. The bus runs from 6:30 to 20:30.

The route number is indicated on the windshield on the left side

Blue - ticket Price depends on the distance and route: 20-50 baht. The bus runs from 7:00 to 18:00. On the windshield (or above it) is written the name of the final stop of this route

Since the bus has no actual stops, you need to "catch" it with your hand raised up. You can exit at any point of the route-you will need to press the button on the ceiling.

Smart bus [ edit ]

Phuket has a very convenient and comfortable bus: the Phuket Smart bus . This will take you anywhere you need to go along the entire West coast.

Fares were from 50 to 170 baht. As of Nov 2022, the cost of the bus has been lowered to THB 100 / trip, regardless of where you board and depart. Thanks to this bus, you can not only get from the airport to the beach, but also get between the main beaches of the Western part of the island. On the first trip you need to buy a reloadable electronic ticket, which is called Phuket Rabbit card. It costs 300 baht, of which 100 baht is the cost of the card itself, which is not refundable, and 200 baht in credit. You can travel if the card amount is at least 170 baht. The card is valid for 7 years.

Tuk-tuk [ edit ]

The minimum fare is 200 baht. The cost of an hour of rent will be 200 baht. At the same time it can accommodate up to 4 - 8 people. At night, fares go up by around 50%.

Motorbike taxi [ edit ]

The fare starts from 20 baht for 1-2 km, they are almost at every corner. Drivers are dressed in brightly coloured and numbered vests

Prepaid (taxi prepaid) [ edit ]

In any tour office both in the international and domestic terminal of Phuket airport you will be offered a taxi to the desired hotel / beach. You just pay the full amount of the trip, you are given a receipt, which indicates the number of the car, go to the Parking lot, look for a car with the specified number and you're on your way.

Taxi meter (taxi meter) [ edit ]

If you leave the airport building on the street, you will see a counter where you can take a taxi. Rates are as follows:

  • 100 baht airport fee
  • first 2 km: 50 baht flat fee
  • next 2-15 km: 12 baht per km
  • next 10 km: 15 baht per km

Rideshare apps [ edit ]

Uber or Grab. You can also book in advance for a certain date and time.

Motorbike rental [ edit ]

Bike rental locations are located in almost every quarter. Standard rental price - from 300 baht (the cost of rent depends on the duration and model). An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for vehicle rental, with a motorcycle endorsement if renting a motorbike, the IDP must match the license class of the home country of issue and must be appropriate to the vehicle being used; both documents must be carried. The IDP is seldom requested by the person renting you the vehicle but will be required (along with the vehicle's STNK registration papers). If you're stopped by the police typically a "fine" will allow you to keep driving but this strategy will quickly unravel if there is an accident involving damage or injury. An IDP is easily obtainable from motoring clubs in your home country such as the AA in New Zealand and the UK and the AAA in Australia and the US. When you rent you need a passport or a deposit. Be cautious to leave your passport with the renter. Getting theft and/ damage insurance on your rented scooter or motorbike is also an issue as 99% of the companies renting out motorbikes or scooters do not offer this. If you want your rented motorcycle or scooter to be insured against theft and/or damages, Bikago is the only motorbike rental agency in Phuket offering this, as of June 2023.

Car rental [ edit ]

Anyone over the age of 20 can rent a car in Phuket, either at the airport or at various beaches. The longer the rental period, the lower the price per day. Standard rental price - from 600 baht (the cost of rent depends on the duration and model). To rent a car you will need a passport. Use discretion about letting the rental agency keep your passport, and check to see what insurance is available and what it covers you for.

Boat rental [ edit ]

For those wishing to make regular boat trips, to travel from Phuket to other places, there is a great opportunity to rent a boat or yacht. Depending on the need, you can use a small boat with a outboard motor, a boat with an average capacity of five to eight people or a real pleasure yacht.

By thumb [ edit ]

Hitchhiking would be delightful if it weren't for the taxi mafia. Any car can double as a taxi. Mention at least 3 times that you're not going to pay: "no money". "Free ride". "No taxi". Ask if this is clear to the driver. If the driver later on still insists on money, be sure to move on before they get their corrupt police friends involved.

Talk [ edit ]

Phuket is one of Thailand's premier tourist destinations and (basic) English is widely spoken, especially in the beach areas. That said, even a little Thai will draw smiles and can be useful in the less frequented areas of Phuket. There are also a number of Thai language courses on the island for those who wish to take their language skills to the next level.

See [ edit ]

Phuket is known the world over for its beaches . There is a wide variety of beaches, some calm, some totally ruined by millions of visitors each year. But you can explore the interior of Phuket, a fertile hilly expanse that consists of mangrove forests, fishing villages, rubber and pineapple plantations, small Muslim communities and shrimp farms.

Do [ edit ]

Swimming, snorkeling, diving, yachting, sailing, jet-skiing and parasailing are among the more popular activities on the island. Other activities include freediving, windsurfing, kite surfing, wakeboarding, and deep sea fishing. Popular kite surfing locations include Nai Yang in summer and Chalong Bay in winter season. Sea canoeing is a popular activity in Phang Nga Bay , as many grottoes are only accessible by canoe. Sailing Regattas include the Kings Cup in December, Pangna Bay Regatta normally in February and Phuket Raceweek in July.

Diving [ edit ]

Phuket has some decent dive sites. Most dive sites are off nearby islands, but distances are fairly short and there are dozens of dive shops and boats to cater to your needs, most based near Chalong Bay . The reefs in the area are in a healthy condition with both solid hard corals and colourful soft corals. There is also an abundance of marine life. Most of the dive locations are suitable for all levels of divers, but there are also some that are quite deep.

The most well-known dive site in the Phuket area is Racha Yai with its sloping rocky reefs and its abundance of solid coral forests. It is home to Ter Bay where there is an exciting wreck in the depths of 25–35 m. The island south of Racha Yai, Racha Noi , is a haven for experienced divers as the depths are greater and the currents stronger. The overall topography is strikingly different from Racha Yai with huge granite boulders. The diving in Racha Noi compared to Racha Yai is definitely more challenging but the rewards are greater.

Just off Phuket, is the limestone island of Ko Doc Mai that soars vertically from the seabed. It is home to a diverse fish and offers the opportunity to view leopard sharks, moray eels, octopus, and turtles. Phuket can also function as a base for dives further afield, such as Ko Phi Phi . Diving in Phuket's warm clear blue waters is best from mid-Oct-May, when the calm seas and rain-free days make Phuket diving great.

Snuba Diving is the safest and easiest way to try diving on holiday in Phuket. The word Snuba is a portmanteau of "snorkel" and "scuba". The swimmer uses swim fins, a diving mask, weights, and diving regulator as in scuba diving. The air, however, instead of coming from tanks strapped to the diver's back, comes through a long hose from tanks on pontoon rafts on the surface. No certification required, children 8+, just like SCUBA diving except easier. Snuba trips go to most Phuket dive sites. No heavy equipment to wear, no long classes, maximum depth of 7 m. Professional dive guides accompany each group.

Freediving [ edit ]

Phuket is a leading dive centre in Thailand and has become a freediving hotspot. It is the home of the area's only AIDA instructor training centre. Most freediving trips go out with scuba dive boats to well-trafficked dive sites, but some freediving off the beach is also possible. The local operators are usually very happy to find like-minded divers and will happily give pointers.

Muay Thai [ edit ]

There are many muay Thai camps on the island offering instruction to visitors. There are courses available for people of different levels of fitness, and those who train hard may be given the option to fight. Chalong Bay and Rawai especially is home to almost a dozen muay Thai gyms. If you're interested in a one-day lesson or a six month training stint, it's a good place to look.

phuket thailande voyage

Sailing and yachting [ edit ]

Phuket has become a sailing and yachting centre of Thailand and adjacent countries. It's the home of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek , King's Cup Regatta , Phang Nga Bay Regatta, the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) , four marinas, and the Phuket Yacht Club (PYC) . Well-sheltered anchorages teem with yachts. The marinas are all on the east side of the island, which makes them an ideal starting point to explore the natural wonders of Phang Nga Bay . An entire fleet of traditional junk-rigged boats is berthed there, offering day trips. One company that offers private charter tours is Lamoet.

Snorkelling [ edit ]

Snorkelling can be enjoyed in sheltered bays all around Phuket. It is particularly enjoyable at easily accessible reefs at Patong , Karon and Kata Beaches. Fins, mask, and snorkel can be rented on a daily basis from shops all over the island. Full and half day trips are available to the islands surrounding Phuket. Most popular are Ko Hae , Ko Racha Yai , Ko Khai (a hidden gem in Phang Nga Bay ), and Ko Phi Phi . There are many tours available at very cheap rates and speedboats will be filled with up to 65 people. Research your options before signing up for any tour.

Snorkeling trips to Racha & Phi Phi Islands [ edit ]

Agencies sell all-inclusive day trips from all over Phuket. Quality and safety seem to correlate with prices paid. The lower-end speedboat tours take approximately 30-35 passengers per 2-engine speedboat and 50-60 passengers on 3-engine speedboats. Very cheap tours take over 100 people in a speedboat. The higher-end tours take approx 15 to 18 passengers on 2-engine speedboats. Insist on knowing the exact number of guests that will be on the boat. Keep in mind that tour desks will tell you anything to get your money, as they receive up to 65% commissions from the lower-end tours. It is always best to contact the dive company directly to ensure that you are getting what you pay for.

The more people on the boat, the longer it takes to get on and off at each stop, thus lowering the amount of time you get to spend off the boat. A packed boat is not very fun or safe when there are large waves.

Private companies providing small group tours are few. Can only be booked direct). The tours include stops at all the major sights, higher quality lunches (from picnic to seaside sit-down restaurant meals), full sets of snorkelling gear, minibus transport, fresh tropical fruits, snacks & drinks on board, foreign owner/guide, small groups, attention to safety, and national park fee. Prices vary based on services, amenities and extras are provided.

Buy [ edit ]

Phuket Town is a source of cultured pearls, niello ware, pewter ware, ornaments and dried seafood. Specialist shops dealing in souvenir products can be found on Ratsada, Phang Nga, Montri, Yaowarat, and Tilok-U-Thit Rd, in Phuket Town , Thepkasattri Rd, north of town and at the beach centres of Patong , Kata , Karon , and Rawai .

Phuket's larger beaches are ravaged by ravenous hordes of tailors , who are certainly cheap, but will screw you over if they can. For example, suits done in 24 hours are usually just glued together and will fall apart the first time you take them to a dry cleaner. Choose your own fabrics (you can buy them on Thalang Rd in Phuket Town), insist on multiple fittings and check the quality of work carefully. It makes little difference which tailor shop you choose, since they're all just sales fronts for a few central sweatshops.

There are two giant shopping malls in Phuket: Central Festival , at the northwest edge of Phuket Town , and Jungceylon , in Patong .

There is a night market that opens from Th-Su, a couple of traffic lights past the Central Festival shopping mall. You can buy many things from clothes to jewellery to sunglasses. A great place to visit during your stay.

A small store without a name in Latin letters can be found on Ranong street opposite the market hall and 7-Eleven West of the small roundabout. Standard commodities can be bought there in large quantities (e.g. 12 pack of mosquito repellent, 3 pack of SPF50 sun screen, 5 pack of shower gel) for a discount.

Eat [ edit ]

phuket thailande voyage

Food in Phuket is surprisingly cosmopolitan, especially in Patong, as many foreigners have set up shop to cater to their fellow travellers. All the usual Thai favourites are of course still available, with a particular emphasis on seafood. See the individual town articles for detailed listings.

Phuket has its own style of preparation and cooking. Some interesting local dishes include:

  • Fried or boiled noodle dishes (หมี่ผัดหรือหมี่น้ำแบบต่าง ๆ) , usually with pork or chicken, are available at many noodle shops in Phuket Town such as Mi Ton Pho, Mi Sapam, Mi Ao Ke, Mi Hun Pa Chang.
  • Khanom Jin (ขนมจีน), a version of noodles eaten at breakfast, usually served with a spicy curry sauce and fresh vegetables.
  • Nam Phrik Kung Siap (น้ำพริกกุ้งเสียบ) is a mixture of dried chili and smoked shrimp eaten with various fresh vegetables.

Cashew nuts and pineapples are grown in Phuket and available all year round. The nuts are available dried, fried, or coated. Phuket pineapples are some of the most delectable, sweet and firm available.

Drink [ edit ]

phuket thailande voyage

Phuket has a vibrant nightlife, second only to Pattaya among Thailand's beach resorts. Patong 's is by far the busiest of the lot. There are plenty of other bars, discos, clubs and activities catering to every taste, from pastor to sex-tourist.

Sleep [ edit ]

There are lots of options available in Phuket. But for the more popular hotels and resorts in the better locations you should book at least a couple months in advance during high season (Nov-May). The best rates are usually found on-line and many hotels offer best rate guarantees when you book direct. Most of the time you will pay more if you walk in and take the rack-rate.

There are 5 main areas for tourists to stay in Phuket. Patong is the most popular due to its active nightlife, street markets and calm water beaches however this area isn’t for everyone (especially people with families). The quieter areas include Kata, Karon, Rawai and Nai Yang, all with great markets and quieter beach areas.

Connect [ edit ]

Mail [ edit ].

If you want to send mail, post offices and parcel services are widely available. In Phuket Town , there is a post office at the corner of Phang Nga Rd and Montri Rd. In Patong , there is one at the appropriately named Soi Post Office, a side-street of Thavee Wong Rd (near Molly Malone's).

Telephone [ edit ]

You can usually pick up a free Thai SIM card at the airport in the baggage claim area. Look around for a booth or a kiosk. You can also pre-purchase a Thai SIM card online or purchase one at one of the many phone shops all over Phuket. Pay phones are uncommon, as most Thais have mobile phones. Phuket has very good mobile phone coverage. Mobile Internet is available from all providers. The area code for Phuket is 076 . Dial 0 if you're calling from within Thailand.

Cope [ edit ]

There is a wide array of international newspapers and magazines at some bookstores in Phuket Town and Patong . You can also follow local English radio through the website of Phuket FM Radio and on 91.5 FM.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Particularly in the summer monsoon season, there are strong currents on many of the beaches and drownings are a depressingly common occurrence. Four tourists died during a single 3-day stretch in June 2009. Heed the warning flags on popular beaches and play it safe if off the beaten track.

Crime as of late has definitely increased in the Phuket area among farangs (Westerners) and you should keep this in mind and be vigilant of anyone who wants to befriend you or trick you into gambling (which is illegal) or anything else you consider out of the ordinary. Katoeys (ladyboys) are notorious for pick-pocketing as you walk around the tourist areas at night. Also muggings take place on a regular basis. Avoid walking down unlit sois; stick to the main roads. If something looks/sounds too good to be true, it surely is.

phuket thailande voyage

Tourist police can be contacted locally by dialing 1155. They have a good basic understanding of English (many are farangs), so if you're in trouble these people should be contacted first. Thai police speak hardly any English and normally take the side of the locals even if at fault. Always insist on the Tourist Police if you have any run-in with the Thai Police. Use only metered taxis and ask hotels to call, take down driver license plate and taxi license number before you get in. You can use the receipt from a taxi to complain to police or find lost property, so take a receipt and license numbers.

Don't overstay your visa! Two offices in Phuket can extend your visa: one in Phuket Town and one in Patong. The extension is valid for extra 30 days of the departure date stamped in your passport. The cost is 1900 baht. You'll need to provide a passport-sized photo. The Immigration Office in Phuket Town is at the end of Phuket Road near the pier.

Scams [ edit ]

Secret menu price changes [ edit ].

A handful of establishments in the touristy nightlife areas have more than one menu: a normal menu, and an absurdly overpriced menu. Both menus contain the exact same items, except the overpriced menu tends to double, if not triple, the prices stated on the regular menu. Upon sitting down, waitresses may elect to bring you one or the other, depending on how touristy/intoxicated you or your groups looks. There are reports of tourists going to an establishment one night and returning the following night, only to see that the prices have doubled. This may be tricky to catch, especially if it's your first time at the establishment. Since the establishments that employ this practice are in the more expensive tourist areas, don't expect the best prices to begin with, but if something seems absolutely ridiculous, such as 500-1000 baht for a cocktail, either leave or ask whoever is serving you politely about the high prices. If you play your cards right, your server may eventually bring out the less expensive menu or offer lower prices. Be especially careful of this menu tactic during the high season (summer), at crowded venues, at the seedier venues, and on weekends. One way to avoid this is to dress down slightly and not wear flashy/expensive clothes and jewelry.

Too-good-to-be-true drink offers

The nightlife area is full of many very pushy club promoters on the street waving all sorts of incredibly attractive drink offers in your face in order to get you to come to their bar/club. Unfortunately, a decent amount of these offers are scams and have strings attached in one way or the other. For example, certain promoters may claim that their bar is offering 25 baht beers and shots all night long. While they will honor the drink deal, you will be charged an absurd entrance fee of around 1500 baht per person on your bill. Refusing to pay once you have already consumed may lead to the staff members getting angry and aggressive. When talking to club promoters in the nightlife area, it is absolutely necessary that you first not accept any deal that is simply too good to be true, and second to ask as many questions as possible before accepting any deal plus state that you will not accept or pay for any expense that was not discussed. Even if the club promoter promises certain terms to you, be sure you confirm the terms with whoever is serving you once you get inside to make sure there is no miscommunication and everyone is on the same page.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

Tap water should be regarded as non-potable. Liquids from sealed bottles nearly always are, and should be used wherever possible, for example, when brushing your teeth. Bars and restaurants universally purchase ice made from purified water.

Patong is the main tourist area of Phuket.

Many travellers choose to stay here while travelling to Thailand.

As you may imagine, since this is the main tourist spot, it has many hotels (from youth hostels to the superb 5-star hotel complexs), bars, restaurants, shops and places to go out and party .

In the evening, Bangla Road is undoubtedly the liveliest street on the island with live music and ladyboy shows.

During the day, you can also enjoy the large beach of Patong (2 km long, the longest on the island) and the many water activities on offer: towed buoy rides, banana ride, parasailing. What a thrilling experience!

If you like the hustle and bustle and the crowd doesn’t bother you, Patong is a must for a stay in Phuket.

Patong

Phuket Town is the island’s main city and the capital.

The old town is really pleasant to walk around for a few hours . You can observe the colourful Sino-Portuguese style buildings, which are perfectly renovated and maintained.

Here you won’t find any dense crowds or electric cables everywhere, the place has retained all its former charm. If you have ever visited Bangkok during your tour in Thailand, it’s a big change!

The historic centre has most of the places to discover.

What are the things to see in Phuket Town:

  • Thalang Road, the most popular street, with its local craft shops and cafés
  • Thai Hua Museum on the history of Phuket
  • The “Blue Elephant Mansion” famous for its traditional Thai cooking classes
  • The shrine of serene light, a Chinese temple
  • The Jui Jui sanctuary, also Chinese style but more recent
  • The Clock Tower (not to be confused with Chiang Rai )
  • The Phuket Museum is located in the Old Standard Chartered Bank building
  • Phang Nga Road and its street art
  • Bang Niew Shrine

If you have not rented a car or a scooter, you can easily reach Phuket Town by bus from any part of the island.

You can also choose to book an organised tour with pick-up at your hotel in Phuket. The trip includes a guided tour of the old town , a visit to the Chalong temple, the statue of the Great Buddha and ends at the Karon view-point.

This is one of the best trips to see many of the must-see sights of Phuket easily!

You can book it by clicking the green button below:

Wat Chalong is one of the most visited tourist sites in Phuket.

Built in the 19th century , it is the largest Buddhist temple on the island.

It includes several buildings but the most impressive remains the chedi, 60 metres tall , which is supposed to house a a splinter of Buddha’s bone. The interior is decorated with very beautiful frescoes representing the life of Buddha.

You must go up to the terrace on the top floor to enjoy the view of the island.

You’re going to Phuket?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

The closer you get to your travel dates, the harder it will be to get a good deal. Lots of people will be visiting Phuket on the same dates as you , so you can be sure that the best deals are booked extremely quickly!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Phuket.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Phuket!

Wat Chalong Phuket

Another well-known temple to see absolutely in Phuket: the Big Buddha.

This 25m tall white marble statue on top of a hill can be seen for miles around. It quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Phuket!

Apart from the statue, which I must admit is quite impressive, you can get a beautiful 360° view of the island and the beaches.

Big Bouddha Phuket

As I was saying, most people who travel to Phuket come here mainly to enjoy its beaches.

So what are the most beautiful beaches in Phuket?

  • Freedom Beach, with its white sands and turquoise waters. Only accessible by boat from Patong beach or by walking (but sometimes the path is closed).
  • Kata Beach, a vast stretch of sand, as popular as Patong, with restaurants and cafes everywhere
  • Karon beach, the second largest beach on the island
  • Nai Harn Beach is located in a sheltered bay, surrounded by greenery
  • Laem Singh Beach, a beautiful strip of fine sand bordered by palm trees
  • Ya Nui beach renowned for snorkelling activities
  • Kamala beach, ideal for families
  • Surin beach, north of Kamala
  • The Bangtao beach, in the most upscale part of the island, bordered by luxury hotels
  • Banana Beach , still not crowded as much

It is impossible to visit Phuket and not explire the most famous island of Thailand, Koh Phi Phi!

The island is located between Phuket and Koh Lanta and is ideal fpr a day trip from Phuket.

The island is famous for being home to the Maya Bay beach, which was discovered by the whole world in the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo di Caprio. Since then, any good itinerary in Thailand must include a visit to Koh Phi Phi.

Unfortunately, the having nearly 5,000 visitors per day and hundreds of boats had severely damaged corals and the ecosystem. The beach was closed a few years before being reopened.

It may be closed occasionally a few months a year, but in this case you can see Maya Bay from the boat.

Every day, trips leave from Phuket and you can explore several islands in 1 day including Koh Phi Phi, Bamboo Island, Khai Island and Maiton Island.  There are also stops at Monkey Beach, Pi Leh Cove and Viking Cave.

Everything is included in the price (between 3,200 and 3,500 Bahts, or around €100): pick-up at the hotel, transport to the port, boat cruise, lunch, mask and snorkel for snorkelling, and as many soft drinks as you want.

Another advantage of this trip: a morning departure to visit later than other boats.

Simply click on the button below to book your boat trip to Koh Phi Phi from Phuket:

If you don’t feel like getting up too early, you can also book the same trip but with a later departure. Reservations can be made by clicking here!

Finally, for a luxury cruise to Koh Phi Phi , you must take the catamaran trip. The boat is very comfortable and you will have paddle boats and kayaks . There is even a long-tailed boat ride (the traditional Thai boats) to access a beautiful lagoon.

Book your luxury catamaran trip in Koh Phi Phi by clicking on the button:

An important note regarding trips and activities in Phuket and Thailand in general: some agencies are extremely lax in terms of safety standards and respect for the environment. Incidentally, accidents happen quite regularly!

In order for you to do enjoy your trip safely, it is best to book the options I propose in this article in advance. It’s not more expensive, and you can rest assured that you are doing your trip or activity with a reputed agency.

Koh Phi Phi

If you’ve been around the island’s beaches and you don’t know what to do in Phuket, you must take a boat trip to Phang Nga Bay.

It is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world thanks to its numerous islands and karst rocks. And I have to admit, the bay is very photogenic!

In this case too, a famous movie helped expose Phang Nga to the world , a James Bond movie specifically: “The Man with the Golden Gun” .  So much so that Koh Tapu Island is now known as James Bond Island.

Every day, boats leave from Phuket and take you to Phang Nga Bay. On the schedule, there is a trip to James Bond Island and also to the island of Koh Panyee, built like a large floating market with souvenir shops.

At several places in the bay, particularly around the islands of Ko Phanak, Ko Hong and Ko Raya Ring, you can go kayaking to explore the caves and cross the rocky formations.

The one-day boat fare (about 4,000/ 4,500 Bahts) in Phang Nga Bay always includes: pick-up from your hotel, transport to the port, cruise, lunch, snorkelling equipment, guided kayaking tour.

The trip that I have selected offers a departure that is early enough to enjoy the place before the other boats arrive, which is really great.

To book your trip to James Bond Island from Phuket with a reputed agency, click on the button below:

If it’s a little too early for you, you can also book the standard trip with a departure at 9.30am (click here).

And if you want to indulge yourself, you can take choose a luxury cruise on a magnificent boat equipped with deckchairs and a bar. This trip includes lunch and dinner buffet, which you can enjoy while admiring a beautiful sunset over the islands.

All drinks are included , as well as a kayak trip. You will even have stand-up paddle boards and buoys at your disposal.

You can book this luxury boat trip to James Bond Island by clicking this button:

Another boat trip that you must take if you are in Phuket is the one to the Similan Islands archipelago.

The Similan Islands are a paradise for diving or snorkelling enthusiasts and are regularly ranked among the most beautiful spots in the world. Accessible to beginners and experienced divers alike!

From Phuket, the easiest way to get to the Similan Islands is to book a day trip.

The schedule includes a stop on the famous Donald Duck Bay beach, a climb to the Sail Rock viewpoint, two snorkelling and diving breaks, a picnic in Honeymoon Bay and a last stop for swimming before returning.

Everything will be taken care of for you, from your hotel in the morning until the evening and return. Everything is included in the price (about 3800 Bahts)!

To book your trip to the Similan Islands from Phuket with a good agency , just click on the button below:

Why not continue your holiday in Phuket with some time in an elephant sanctuary.

Present all over Thailand, they gather elephants that have been abused or abandoned to treat them. They are increasingly becoming ethical by no longer offering elephant rides and are trying to recreate their natural living conditions as much as possible .

On this half-day trip (you can choose to leave in the morning or in the afternoon), you will have the chance to feed the elephants and wash them. It’s a great idea for family activities in Phuket!

The schedule is always organised as follows: pick-up at your hotel, transport, about 3 hours with elephants , lunch and return. Everything is included in the price of around 3000 Bahts.

You must book this elephant visit in Phuket in advance as the number of visitors is limited every day.

Just click the button below:

Are you tired of sunbathing on the beach? Do you want to have a little adventure and some thrills?

No problem, there are several sports activities in Phuket:

  • Tubing: river descent on a buoy
  • Quad biking:  You must take this quad bike ride to enjoy a great jungle tour (click here!).
  • From ziplines to the Flying Hanuman: if you want to spend a day in the trees at the most famous tree stand in Phuket, you can book your tickets by clicking here!
  • And a wide variety of water activities: buoy rides, parasailing, paddle boating, etc.

What’s cool is that you are able to combine multiple activities in the same day. For an outing including quad bike s, zip lines and rafting, you can book this trip by clicking on the button below:

There are several viewpoints in Phuket to admire the splendid panoramas or have a romantic moment at sunset:

  • The view from Karon , overlooking the 3 beaches of Kata Noi, Kata and Karon
  • Khao Rang Hill Viewpoint and its panorama of the city of Phuket. You should also see the lights of Phuket Town at night. While going there, you can visit Wat Kao Rang and its great golden seated Buddha.
  • Cape Promthep, to the south of the island, the favourite spot for tourists to admire the sunset
  • Windmill Point, located close to the cape, the view is worth the detour.

Point de vue Promthep

This Phuket tourist guide continues with a very typical Thai concept: attending a ladyboy show.

Ladyboys are very beautiful “ladies” , very well-made up and dressed, and who are actually men!

The most famous ladyboy show in Phuket is held every evening at the Simon Cabaret.

There are other shows in Phuket but this is really the best: the staging is careful and the costumes are flamboyant. A bit kitschy, but its all to prepare the setting! At the end, you can even have a souvenir photo taken with the stars of the show.

To spend an evening at the Simon Cabaret Show in Phuket, you can book your tickets here.

For a more family-friendly version, you must attend the Siam Niramit show featuring more than a hundred actors and dancers. It traces the history of Thailand through several different paintings and decorations. The costumes are really beautiful and the show is well done.

Tickets can be booked in advance by clicking below:

You can take advantage of your holiday in Phuket by taking a cooking class! This is one of the best things to do in Thailand because the food is so good that you will want to recreate the dishes at home.

The class, which lasts about 4 hours , always starts with a visit to a local market to buy all the ingredients .

Once back in the kitchen, you will learn how to cook Pad Thai, curry panang, tom yam kung or sticky mango rice before the tasting.

The dishes offered vary according to the day of the week , so do not hesitate to choose the menu that suits you best.

To book your cooking class in Phuket, click here:

During your stay in Phuket, you must spend an evening to attend a Muay Thai boxing fight.

It is the national sport of Thailand and all the cities have a stadium where the fighting takes place several times a week.

In Phuket, it’s at the Bangla Boxing Stadium in Patong. For almost 4 hours, you can watch a succession of fights (children, women, men) in a charged atmosphere , punctuated by musicians who mark the hits.

On the other hand, Muay Thai is considered one of the most violent sports in which almost all strikes are allowed, so it’s not for the faint-hearted.

You have to buy your ticket early to get a seat, the Thai people love it and the stadium is often full.

To buy souvenirs and try Thai street food, you cannot go wrong with a visit to a Thai night market.

Phuket has several Night Markets:

  • The Sunday Street Market on Thalang Road, Phuket Town
  • Chillva Night Market Phuket, Thursdays to Sundays on Yaowarat Road
  • Naka Market, next to Naka temple, on Saturday and Sunday
  • Malin Plaza, every day south of Patong Beach
  • Buntai Market, between Patong and Phuket Town
  • Karon temple market, Tuesdays and Fridays

During your walk in Phuket Town, you can also visit Monkey Hill.

As the name suggests, this hill is inhabited by entire colonies of monkeys. The monkeys are used to people, and there are dozens of them on the road waiting for one thing, to be fed! And Thai people have a good business sense, there are banana and groundnut sellers all over the place.

Remember to put all your food and things inside your bag, as they love trying to steal from you. And don’t think they are pets. Even though they are used to humans, they are still wild animals and can be aggressive.

If you are trying to monkey around by taunting them with food, don’t be surprised at how quickly they react by trying to scratch or bite you. Follow basic principles of caution and all will be well!

At the top of the hill , accessible only by foot or scooter, you can admire a panoramic view of Phuket from here.

Lopburi, the city of monkeys

The Bang Pae waterfall is one of the most popular places in Phuket among the local population.

It is a little neglected by tourists because it is located to the north-east of the island, in the least touristy part. To get there, you will have to rent a scooter or a car.

At 18m tall, it is the largest waterfall in Phuket. It takes about 10 minutes on foot along a river to get there. When we visited there, the place was filled with Thai people who came to spend a some time with their family and swim.

Bang Pae is part of the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, so you will have to pay 200 Bahts per person to enter it.

The waterfall itself is not exceptional , people go there mainly to visit the gibbon rehabilitation centre (Gibbon Rehabilitation Project). Run by volunteers, it hosts gibbons that were once abused or adopted by families who got rid of them when they grew too big.

The goal is to try re-settle them into their environment gradually . You can support the project by sponsoring a gibbon.

Cascade de Bang Pae Phuket

I’m telling you about Coral Island to dissuade you from going there!

The island is less than 30 minutes away by boat from Phuket and is filled with tourists. Every day, boats line up in front of the beach and the people flood out.

And all these people are just splashing around in one place. Add to this the incessant drone of water activities and boat engines, and you will get to see the negative side of some places in Thailand.

Not to mention that the beach is not very clean and the facilities (sunshades, deckchairs) are not on their last legs!

So there are a lot of better things to do in Phuket!

If you want to go there and form your own opinion, allow 1,500 Bahts for the return boat trip with lunch included.

As with Coral Island, there is Racha Island, 30 minutes away from Phuket speed boat .

The island is renowned for its seabed , ideal for snorkelling, but unfortunately, diving with dozens of people means seeing more legs and orange vests in the water than fish!

And the island is unfortunately included in all the tours organised for Chinese tourists, you will see hordes of them landing from 10:30 am.

In short, there are other ways to find a more peaceful experience on beaches in Phuket. I thought I should warn you!

If you want to form your own opinion, you can book this combined trip to visit Coral Island and Racha Island. It includes a luxury catamaran, lunch and music played by a DJ.

You can find all the information by clicking here!

When visiting Phuket, you can also discover some special customs.

And the vegetarian festival is at the top of the list!

It is held every year during the ninth lunar month for 9 days and as its name indicates, it involves of not eating meat during that time. Nothing too original so far.

But things get a little tricky during the processions, where some participants begin to mutilate themselves and pierce their cheeks with various objects, ranging from a single needle to several swords. Very impressive to see.

What are the party spots in Phuket?

As I said in the section dedicated to Patong, Bangla Road is the place to go out in Phuket. There is something for all styles and tastes: gogo-bars, lounge bars, live music… And if you’re looking for a night club where you can dance all night long, head for the Illuzion , Phuket’s trendiest nightclub.

To attend a traditional dance show or one with actors and dancers , you can go to the Simon Cabaret Show or the Siam Niramit.

However, you must avoid the Phuket Fantasea show where elephants take part and where you can take pictures with baby tigers before the show.

I haven’t been there, but we all know how animals are treated at these kinds of attractions. Not to mention the 4,000-seater dining room where you can dine before for an exorbitant price. And it’s notorious for not being that good, far from the quality of Thai food.

Où sortir à Phuket

The best things to do around Phuket?

After touring the attractions I discussed in the best things to see, you must continue your stay in Thailand by exploring one or more islands around Phuket.

The islands of Koh Yao Noi and Koh Lanta are easily accessible from Phuket but deserve a minimum of 2-3 days and not just a day trip.

As for Krabi , although it is not an island, the region is a good base for visiting the surrounding islands.

Koh Yao Noi is just a 30-minute boat ride from Phuket. And it is much quieter!

Forget the crowded beaches and the noise, Koh Yao Noi is a really soothing island. It is the ideal island for relaxing holidays and enjoying nice beaches.

From Koh Yao Noi you can also book boat trips to explore the islands of Ko Pak Bia, Ko Lao Lading, Ko Hong or James Bond Island. You will have the opportunity to catch up if you haven’t had time to see it from Phuket.

This is clearly my favourite island to visit near Phuket!

All information to visit Koh Yao Noi can be found in our article: The best things to do in Koh Yao Noi?

Koh Yao Noi

Another well-known island that you must visit around Phuket: Koh Lanta.

To reach there, it takes about 4 hours by boat , usually with a change at Koh Phi Phi. If you didn’t visit Koh Phi Phi, it is rather nice because the boat makes a stop to see Maya Bay beach.

On Koh Lanta, you can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, which are also less touristy than those in Phuket.

You must also visit the 4 islands of Koh Chueak, Koh Waen, Koh Muk and Koh Ngai . Snorkelling stops are planned at various places and there are lots of fish to watch.

All the things to do in Koh Lanta are mentioned in our article: Koh Lanta: the definitive guide.

Koh Lanta

From Phuket, Krabi is located on the other side of the Andaman Sea.

The Krabi area is known for its huge karst peaks and its small and pretty islands like Turtle Island or Chicken Island. You can discover them via boat trips . Click here to book.

20 km from the city, you can visit the Ao Nang beach , which is just 10 minutes away from a heavenly spot in Thailand and the region: Railay .

Bordered by large karst cliffs , the place is truly magnificent. The cliffs are also paradise for climbers, with nearly 700 routes.

To make sure you don’t miss the most beautiful places in Krabi, read our article: What are the best things to see and do in Krabi?

  • Similan Islands

Are you vacationing in Phuket for 4 or 5 days or even a week?

Great, you have time to do all the things I recommend in this guide!

Continue with my circuits for days 1 and 2. For the other days, everything is given for day 3 , you can do everything without having to choose!

And if you’re tired of Phuket then head for another island in the Andaman Sea: Koh Yao Noi or Koh Lanta are waiting for you 😊

If you want to be in the middle of the action, I have prepared a selection of accommodation on the Patong side:

  • Lub D Phuket Patong: Youth Hostel 5 minutes from Patong Beach and 10 minutes from Bangla Road. Modern and very clean dormitory bed from €12. Strong points: huge swimming pool, common areas with even a boxing ring, design, cleanliness. This is the best hostel in Phuket!
  • Mazi Design Hotel by Kalima: Located 5 minutes from the night market and 10 minutes from Bangla Road. Spacious designer double room from €35 per night, breakfast at €7. Strong points: swimming pool, location, comfort of the rooms. It’s my favorite for its excellent value for money in Patong.
  • Holiday Inn Express Phuket Patong Beach Central: Located opposite the beach. Modern and warm double room with balcony from €72, breakfast included. Strong points: outdoor facilities, swimming pool, welcoming atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff.
  • Phuket Marriott Resort Spa, Merlin Beach: 5-star hotel complex located 2 miles from Patong, right on Tri-Trang beach. Warm and comfortable double room with private balcony or terrace from €110, breakfast at €19. Strong points: sea-side location, private beach, quiet, playground for children, setting. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Phuket!

If you prefer to stay in Phuket Town, here is my selection of hotels:

  • Baan Baan hostel: Hostel located in Phuket Old Town. Dormitory bed from €8, breakfast included. Strong points: helpful staff, cleanliness, location, calm atmosphere. The best youth hostel to stay in Phuket Town!
  • Ritsurin Boutique Hotel: Located 600 metres from Thalang Street. Clean and well-equipped double room from €28. Strong points: location, cleanliness, friendly staff.
  • The Malika Hotel: Located 1.8 km from the old town. Double room with very comfortable bedding and balcony from €38, breakfast at €6. Phuket Marriot Resort & Spa - Hôtel de luxe à Phuket

To have a meal in Phuket and everywhere in Thailand, you can’t do better than a night market and its numerous food stalls. Everyone can eat whatever they want and this avoids arguments about the choice of the restaurants (it happens to all of us!)! 😆

Alternatively, you’ll find plenty of restaurants all over Phuket, whether near the beaches or on Bangla Road. However, as the area is very touristy, the prices are often higher than elsewhere in Thailand and the quality is not always there. It is always better to go a bit further away from the busiest streets.

If you want a “real” restaurant with a little more class and a nice view, then I recommend the Mum Tri’s Kitchen. It is located in the bay of Kata. The meals are good and well presented but you will have to pay around €18 per person, which is very expensive for Thailand.

To discover authentic Thai cuisine, your best option is a food tour by a local guide.

The visit I have selected will give you the opportunity to taste fifteen dishes including: a Burmese curry, samosas , naans , exotic fruits, shrimps cooked in banana leaves, noodles, pork kebabs…

Needless to say, it is better to go there on an empty stomach! The dishes are really good and the fact that there is a an upper limit of 8 people is great.

You can book it here:

To get around and visit Phuket, you have several options:

  • Scooter: the ideal way to be independent and stop where you want. But you still need to be capable of driving and be really careful. Most of the hotels or guesthouse in Phuket offer one for rent. Don’t forget to wear your helmet.
  • Car: you can rent a car to get around Phuket. You should compare prices on Rentalcars.com.
  • Bus / Song Thaew: convenient to travel to/from Phuket Town and to beaches. However, it takes long enough to go from one beach to another because most of the times you will travel through the city and have to change buses. Buses generally stop around 5:00 or 6:00pm.
  • Tuk-tuks: a small special feature of Phuket, the price of a tuk-tuk trip is not really negotiable, the latter having agreed on the prices! And of course it’s very expensive, and even more so at the end of the day when the buses don’t run anymore.
  • Taxi: the same as for tuk-tuks, it is impossible to negotiate and no driver will want to set the metre on (apart from those at the airport, if you are lucky). You will therefore have to pay 700 Bahts for less than 30 minutes!
  • Private taxi: to combat the taxi mafia, you can book a private car or a minibus with a driver. They will drive you everywhere and wait for you every time. You must book online by clicking here to get an assured price.
  • Organised trips: at least, there won’t be any nasty surprises since you book and pay online. You can click here to see the different trips offered.

How to get to Phuket

To reach Phuket, you have several option.

Phuket has an international airport, so you can land there directly or arrive on a national flight from Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.

Flights are therefore the quickest way to get to Phuket.

The airport is located to the north of the island.

Do not hesitate to compare the flight prices to Phuket using our comparator in the next section.

To avoid getting ripped off by a taxi or the stress of taking the bus , once you arrive at Phuket airport, you can book your transport back to your accommodation in advance. The driver will wait for you with a name-sign. You can also choose your vehicle (4 to 8 seats).

All information about booking a transfer from Phuket Airport is available by clicking here:

You can also go to Phuket by bus , from Bangkok for example.

The journey takes at least 12 hours and the fares start from 640 Bahts.

From Bangkok, the other option is to take the train to Surat Thani (8 hours ) + 1 bus to Phuket (add 5 hours).

From Krabi, Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi , you can go by boat to Phuket.

You can choose between speed boats (faster but more expensive and – less comfortable) or ferries . You will disembarked at the Rassada port , 3 km from Phuket Town.

For a ferry transfer from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket , you can book by clicking here.

For a trip in a speedboat to Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi, you can click directly by booking here!

Since flight prices for Phuket vary greatly, it is a good idea to compare them as soon as possible. To do this, you can use our flight comparison tool, in partnership with Skyscanner.  You can rest assured that you will get the best rates.

To help you visualise the town a little better, I made you a tourist map of Phuket listing the places to visit that I talk about in this top 23 things to do in Phuket and nearby. You can display the map legend by clicking the button at the top left with a small arrow.

So what have you planned to in Phuket?

We are traveling to Scotland and will be there during Easter. Is there a recommendation of where to go to avoid crowds and get accomdations. We will probably start in Edinburgh and travel West for 2 weeks. Thanks

Vincent

Hello Judy,

I haven’t visited this part of Scotland (apart from Edinburgh) so unfortunately I can’t help you with your itinerary. But most people visit the Highlands, Isle of Skye, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and Glasgow so the East of Scotland is bound to be less crowded.

Enjoy your trip to Scotland!

A Guide to Vacationing in Phuket

Free beaches, friendly locals, and lots of sun — it doesn’t get much better than a trip to this beautiful island.

phuket thailande voyage

The case for spending a long weekend in Phuket (the most infamous party island in Thailand ) is easy. There’s fresh seafood, great weather, friendly people, and tons of options for travelers on every budget. And let’s not forget the beaches — thanks to its dense, forested landscape, this “pearl of the Andaman” offers an abundance of well-hidden, romantic white sand beaches to choose from.

As a travel destination, Phuket is a breeze to navigate. The whole island is accessible by road, and none of the beaches require an admission fee. Getting there is even easier — with 59 flights from Bangkok per day, travelers can show up pretty much on a whim. Once you’re here, choose from diving, nature hikes, massages, or even a day trip out to the surrounding Phi Phi Islands, Similan Islands, or the narrow sea caves of Phang Nga Bay.

Here’s how to plan the perfect vacation in Phuket.

Cruise around like a local.

Motorcycle is the preferred transportation mode on this island, as it allows easier access to off-road beaches and the island’s smaller neighborhoods (just be sure to keep on the left-hand side of the road, and always wear a helmet).

If you’re feeling adventurous, try hopping on a Songthaew , the blue buses that locals use. “It’s one of the cheapest ways to get around, and it goes to all the main beaches,” says Nathan Schmidt, 26, a diving instructor with Aloha Diving in Rawai, Phuket. “Especially when time is not of importance, it’s nice to hop on and just cruise along.”

Head straight for the jungle.

Sirinat National Park , one of two national parks in Phuket, covers an eight-mile stretch of beach along the island’s northwestern edge. Though the mangrove forests and white, powdery Hat Sai Kaeo beach to the north are absolutely worth seeing, the area can also get a little touristy, thanks to its proximity to Phuket Airport, along with several mega-resorts along the water.

Instead, try Khao Phra Taew National Park , on the other side of the island. It buffers one of Phuket’s last remaining virgin rainforests, and is a natural, unsoiled habitat for wildlife like langurs, barking deer, and monkeys (there’s even a dedicated research facility for rehabilitated gibbons ).

'“Very few tourists know this park,” says Schmitt, “but it offers some of the best hiking opportunities in a real jungle setting.”

Pick a beach, any beach.

Layan Beach, which is at the end of Bang Tao beach on the west side of the island, is a popular spot, with good reason: it backs up to a thick forest, offering plenty of shady nooks to shield sandy bodies from the hot sun. Further away from the built-up shops and tourist area is the alluring Kata Noi Beach, which sits near the island’s southern tip, at the end of a narrow cul-de-sac. Even more secluded: Ao Yon Beach, a sleepy little cove slung with coconut trees, and blissfully free of amenities and resorts.

Try a massage.

After some real R&R? The options for a traditional Thai-style massage here are limitless — though some are more thorough than others. At the luxe Banyan Tree Phuket , for example, you’ll be rubbed down in an open-air pavilion, while waves lap up from the Andaman.

The staff here have all been trained at the brand’s international spa academy , located just down the road, and they use traditional Ayurvedic oils and herbs to address everything from muscular tension to dehydrated skin and improved circulation.

Skip the party in Patong.

The biggest misconception about the island? “That Phuket equals Patong,” laments Schmidt. As a rule, he encourages travelers to venture outside what he calls Phuket’s “party city,” with the goal of exploring the lush nature and unique cultural heritage, rather than just noisy bars and hostels.

For instance, on an intimate, guided walking tour of Old Town Phuket, you’ll learn how the island made its fortune in the tin industry, and was a hub for traders and merchants from all over Southeast Asia, particularly China.

Charming Thalang Road reveals scrumptious Thai-Chinese fusion restaurants, as well as the beautifully intact Sino-Portuguese “shophouse” buildings. These architectural gems, marked by a deceptively narrow facade that opens onto a spacious inner courtyard, date back several centuries, and many still contain family businesses that have been passed down for generations.

Phuket now reopens. From April 1, 2022, all international travelers don't need to take nucleic acid test before departure .

Phuket enjoys the reputation of being the "Pearl of the Andaman Sea". It is the largest island in Thailand and one of the most popular beach destinations in the world, with fine beaches, glittering seas, white sands, nodding palm trees, lively towns, and high-end seaside resorts.

1. How Long to Stay in Phuket: At Least 3 Days

A visit to Phuket usually takes 3 to 7 days, and you can plan a trip of suitable length according to your preferences.

It takes at least 3 days to explore Phuket, and spending 4 days there is the most popular choice.

Indulge in Leisurely Beach Time

Most beaches in Phuket lie along the western coast. Surin Beach, Kata Beach, and Karon Beach are recommended for their quiet, non-touristy vibe and are more suitable for a leisurely holiday.

Explore Phuket's Big Buddha and Wat Chalong

These two sacred Buddhist sites are very close to each other. Located on a hill, the glistening white Big Buddha is 45 m (140 feet) tall and can be spotted from Karon Beach. Wat Chalong is the biggest Buddhist temple in Phuket and is known for its unique building style.

Take a Trip to Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi stands out among more than 30 outlying islands around Phuket for its soft white sands, crystal-clear waters, natural rock caves, and the untainted tropical scenery, making it one of the most popular beach destinations in recent years.

Wander about in Phuket Town

Many visitors head straight to the beaches, so Phuket town is often forgotten. You can walk around the Old Town , which is rich in history and culture.

Explore the historical buildings and mansions built in the colonial style, wander into a temple or museum, visit the weekend market, and relax in a quaint cafe when tired.

Go Island Hopping

There are more than 30 islands around Phuket. The most popular contenders for island hopping are Phi Phi Island, the Similan Islands , Racha Yai Island, and Coral Island.

Take the Phang Nga Bay Cruise

Phang Nga Bay is considered to be the most beautiful location in Phuket and its surrounding areas. You can cruise through the dramatic limestone islands and occasionally stop to enjoy the quiet beaches.

Join a Thai Cooking Class

This is a great choice for those who love the exotic flavors of authentic Thai food and want to learn its secrets. A market tour to choose fresh and natural ingredients is included.

Savor Phuket's Night Markets

Night markets in Phuket are always fun, intense, colorful, surprising, and fascinating, with a variety of local merchandise available at a bargain as well as mouth-watering local delicacies. Naka Market, Lard Yai, and Chillva Market are recommended.

November to April is the best time to visit Phuket . This period is the dry season in Phuket and the weather is very pleasant. You can sunbathe in the warm sunshine and enjoy various water sports in the sea. This period is also the high season. If you plan to travel during this time, please avoid popular spots such as Patong Beach.

May to October is the rainy season and also the off-season for travel. If you plan to travel in this period, you may miss water sports such as scuba diving due to the rain. However, it is a good time to take advantage of quiet beaches and cost-effective rooms.

Phuket has an airport, Phuket International Airport (HKT). The best way to get to Phuket is taking a flight.

In Thailand, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Koh Samui have direct flights to Phuket.

Phuket airport lies in the north of Phuket. From the airport, it takes about 30 minutes to Surin Beach, 50 minutes to Patong Beach, one hour to Karon Beach, and 40 minutes to Phuket town by road.

Tourism in Phuket is well developed, and you can expect accommodation of a good standard. From economy hotels to luxury villas, located in beach areas to the town, you can easily find one to suit your requirements.

Most hotels are clustered around Patong Beach , Karon Beach, and Kata Beach.

If you enjoy partying and are looking for a lively vibe , you can consider booking a hotel in the Patong Beach area. Patong Beach is the heart of Phuket and offers a colorful nightlife and a variety of bars, restaurants, and shopping options.

If you prefer a quiet vibe, you may like to choose a hotel on Karon Beach or Surin Beach.

Here are our recommended hotels on these beaches for your reference:

  • Arinara Bangtao Beach Resort (Bangtao Beach)
  • Twinpalms Phuket Resort (Surin Beach)
  • Katathani Phuket Beach Resort (Karon Beach)
  • Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach (Patong Beach)
  • Burasari Resort (Patong Beach)

Thai dishes feature sour, sweet, salty, and spicy flavor profiles. Different regions of Thailand have slightly different preferences. Phuket is located in the south of Thailand. The dishes there are slightly spicier than in other regions.

Phuket is rich in lobster, oysters, squid, and other seafood. Seafood dishes cooked in the Thai style tend to have a unique taste profile. The most popular seafood restaurants and stalls can be found in Patong Beach . Karon Beach also has a seafood street that attracts visitors all around.

Another feature of Phuket's dishes is that they are cooked with coconut milk. Mushrooms, tomatoes, lemongrass, chicken, and galangal are cooked in coconut milk, offering a special flavor.

Besides restaurants, night markets are the best place to explore local delicacies and immerse yourself in the local community.

Don't worry if you can't get used to the Thai style. You will find more international cuisine there — Western, Japanese, Korean, Lebanese, Turkish, Chinese, etc.

Passport holders from 57 countries are exempt from obtaining a visa to visit Thailand.

If you hold a passport from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, France, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, or 46 other countries, you can visit Phuket without applying for a visa .

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

Voyage Phuket

Votre prochain voyage sera inoubliable

The Essential Thailand: A Guide to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket

By Christina Liao

The Amphawa Floating Market

Thailand—one of Southeast Asia’s most popular countries—continues to grow and flourish. It has so much to offer, from magnificent temples to ancient ruins to bustling cities to beautiful palm-studded beaches. Once the sun begins to set, the streets come alive with markets and street vendors, selling fun trinkets and doling out inexpensive yet delicious food. Bursting with places to see, things to do, and food to eat, the Land of Smiles is one destination you’ll never be bored in.

As with any tropical destination, Thailand can get extremely hot and humid, so avoid the wet, summer season and instead aim to travel from November through February. And, like most places worth visiting, getting to this exotic locale is quite the journey. There are no direct flights from the United States, so be sure to choose an airline that you are not only comfortable with, but that affords you a layover in a desirable airport. Cathay Pacific is arguably one of the best options: You’ll stop in Hong Kong and you won’t have to go through customs, immigration, or a terminal change. Not to mention, HKG is home to some of the best business- and first-class lounges in the world, with luxurious shower rooms that are exactly what you need after a long-haul flight and scrumptious noodle bars to prep you for your three-hour trip to Bangkok.

Once you get to Thailand, you’ll have plenty to do. Here, a look at how to get around, where to stay, and what to eat in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

Skyscrapers, multilane highways, and bumper-to-bumper traffic—unlike anywhere else in Thailand, the country’s capital is as urban as you get. If you’re coming from a big city, Bangkok will feel familiar. It can be a little gritty, but take it at face value and you’ll appreciate the hustle and bustle a lot more.

Getting Around While tuk-tuks may be a fun experience, they’re not particularly practical or safe. There are plenty of metered cabs that you can hail (make sure you remind the driver to “meter” when you get in) and Uber is fairly ubiquitous as well. For those who want to avoid heavy traffic during rush hour, a comprehensive metro system running through the main parts of the city is also an option.

Where to Eat Most days you’ll find a pop-up, tented street food market outside of CentralWorld mall on the plaza hugging Ratchadamri Road. It’s unpretentious and inexpensive, and you’ll find everything from fresh fruit juice to fried seafood to grilled chicken on skewers. Those who are hesitant to try food from one of the outdoor makeshift stalls can head over to Eathai at Central Embassy , where more commercialized versions of hawker fare are served up in the basement level of the mall.

Local haunt P’Aor’s must-order dish, tom yum goong noodles, just might be one of your favorite meals ever. Paired with a variety of seafood, the broth is rich and creamy, packed with flavor from the herbs and spices used to make the soup. For some stellar pad thai, head over to Baan Phadthai , where you have to get the traditional noodle dish with blue crab. Afterward, make a short trip over to Lebua’s rooftop bar Sky Bar and grab a cocktail while enjoying stellar views of the city. Lastly, for those who want a fine-dining experience, Como Metropolitan’s highly regarded Nahm restaurant will not disappoint.

What to Do and See The Grand Palace is undoubtedly the attraction in Bangkok. The grounds also host the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, allowing you to knock off two landmarks from your list quickly. Remember to dress modestly, but in case your shorts are a little too short or your top a smidge too revealing, the tourist office has clothes for you to borrow. Wat Pho is also nearby should you want to pay a visit to the Reclining Buddha.

In the evenings, (except for Mondays), the relatively new Ratchada Train Market offers not only a variety of street food stalls, but is a fun shopping destination as well, with vendors selling everything from touristy knickknacks to vintage clothing. And if you happen to be in Bangkok on the weekend, make sure you make the trip out to Amphawa Floating Market for the quintessential Thai experience. You’ll find everything from exotic fruits like mangosteen and rambutan being sold on the wooden boats floating along the canal, as well as ridiculously large prawns and fresh scallops being grilled onboard. Full disclosure: Unlike Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, you won’t be rowing your way through the canal at Amphawa, but this does fortunately mean it’s a little less tourist-laden than its popular counterpart.

The pool at the Siam Hotel

The pool at Siam Hotel

Where to Stay A respite from the cacophony of the city, the Siam Hotel , with its sleek Art Deco black and white façade, is just far enough away from all of the excitement that it’s a welcomed retreat after a busy day of traipsing around Bangkok. With 39 spacious accommodations, a stunning infinity pool with views of the Chao Phraya River, a spa outfitted with a hammam-inspired room, and even a private boat shuttle to and from the BTS Saphan Taksin pier every 90 minutes, the Siam is the definition of luxury. Before you head out for the day, start your morning off at the hotel’s restaurant with an alfresco breakfast looking over the river, sipping on fresh watermelon juice and enjoying a plate of guay tiew talay (wok-fried flat rice noodles with prawns and squid), included in your room rate.

Chiang Mai will feel like a rural town in comparison to Thailand’s capital; the town square is characterized by low and rickety buildings and fairly basic infrastructure. Transportation is also a bit lackluster, but somehow perfectly plays into the charm of the northern capital. Head a little west and you’ll find a few skyscrapers, cute little neighborhoods, and even, gasp, a mall—all trademarks reminiscent of a burgeoning city conforming to a more modern-day lifestyle. Wander north or south and the adventurist inside you will be teeming with delight. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone here in this eclectic destination that’s just waiting to be explored.

Getting Around Taxis are rare, but it’s relatively easy to get around by foot within and around the square, where an abundance of temples, restaurants, and markets are located. But for longer distances, opt for Uber, which just recently launched in Chiang Mai and is starting to gain some traction, or take a songthaews (red trucks), a shared form of transportation for locals and tourists alike.

A serving of khao soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai

Khao Soi Khun Yai

Where to Eat If there’s one dish you have to have in Chiang Mai, it’s khao soi. A regional food of northern Thailand , the best bowl is dished out at Khao Soi Khun Yai . A curry-based broth simmered for about three hours is topped off with coconut milk and served with egg noodles, cilantro, your choice of protein, and fried noodles. Add a little bit of lime juice and you’ll have the perfect balance of sourness and heat. Order seconds because this meal will undoubtedly be one that you’ll never forget.

Once dusk comes around, vendors start setting up along Manee Nopparat Road just past the North Gate in what is known as Prathu Chang Puak market. Find the stall being manned by a woman in a cowboy hat, chopping up loads of stewed pork hock and laying it over a bed of rice. The meat is unbelievably tender and chock-full of flavor from the soy sauce and spices used to stew the fatty protein. Make sure to also order a bowl of the pork rib soup for just a small additional charge. A few vendors down you’ll also find fresh mango sticky rice, the perfect dessert to end your dinner with.

Another favorite in Chiang Mai is Cherng Doi Roast Chicken . Grab a seat at one of the wooden benches outside and order a green papaya salad, the kai yang nang krob (grilled boneless chicken with crispy skin that’s served with an addictive, tangy tamarind sauce), and a side of sticky rice. This will be another feast for the books.

What to Do and See One of the most magnificent temples in Chiang Mai is Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with stone naga and elephant statues standing guard around the brick structure that dates back to the 14th century. West of the Old City is Wat Suan Dok, where the white mausoleums leading up to the gold bell-shaped pagoda may remind you a little of Chiang Rai’s Wat Rong Khun. Then there’s Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a temple said to be built over the site of where a royal white elephant carrying a magical, self-replicating relic on its back died.

Lantern release during the Loi Krathong festival

Lantern release during the Loi Krathong Festival

For those who want to be adventurous, zipline through the canopies of a lush forest, go whitewater rafting down Mae Taeng River, cliff jump at Grand Canyon Chiang Mai, and climb up the sticky Bua Thong waterfall. But if you rather get some shopping done, head over to Maya Lifestyle Shopping Center, a seven-floor mall packed with clothes, electronics, and a food bazaar, followed by Think Park plaza just down the street, holding little shops highlighting the works of local artisans and a delightful ice cream shop called Seasons for a scoop of fruity sorbet (kiwi apple is a must) if you need a break from the heat. However, what is probably the biggest attraction of the year is the lantern release during Loi Krathong. The event takes place around the full moon of the 12th month per the Thai calendar, typically during what we know as November. It’s a true sight to be seen as thousands of khom loi are released into the evening sky.

The Deluxe Suite at Akyra Manor Chiang Mai

A room at Akyra Manor in Chiang Mai

Where to Stay Having just opened October 2015 in the burgeoning trendy Nimmanhaemin neighborhood just west of the town square, the chic 30-suite Akyra Manor Chiang Mai is the new It boutique hotel in the area. A rooftop pool and bar are available should you want to catch some rays or grab a cocktail during happy hour, and after a tireless day wandering around, unwind in the standalone egg-shaped bathtub with a view of city.

With a proposal on the table to ban alcohol in Bali , Phuket is climbing up the ranks and getting ready to overshadow the popular Indonesian island as the top beach destination in Southeast Asia. Beautiful beaches and stellar resorts, Phuket is where you come for some much deserved reset and relaxation.

Getting Around Unlike Bangkok and Chiang Mai, traveling around Phuket is neither as convenient nor as inexpensive as the aforementioned two cities. You’ll most likely need to call a car, but the other alternative is to download GrabTaxi, a transportation app similar to Uber. Your best bet is to hire a driver for the day to take you around the island and get all of the landmarks out of the way, then spend the rest of your vacation soaking in the sun at your hotel.

Yam ma kuer doi kham at Blue Elephant

Yam Ma Kuer Doi Kham at the Blue Elephant

Where to Eat An alfresco seafood dinner by the water is a must while in Phuket and Kan Eang @Pier is one of the most popular spots, with fresh lobster, wild-caught fish, tiger prawns the size of your hand, and a variety of curries all on the menu. If you’re in the mood for something that’s a little more like home cooking, Raya , tucked inside a Sino-Portuguese home in Phuket Town, will hit the spot. Don’t miss out on the crabmeat with curry and coconut milk served with small bundles of rice vermicelli—which is subtle in flavor, but delicious nevertheless—and what is known on the menu as steamed pork with pepper and garlic, an item native to the island where the meat is braised for hours and is packed with flavor from all of the peppercorns and garlicky goodness. Lastly, touted as the restaurant you go to for “Royal Thai cuisine,” Blue Elephant takes Thai food to next level, serving up dishes like crab soufflé, massaman lamb, and foie gras tamarind sauce.

One of the views from Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape

What to Do and See The most notable site on the island is Big Buddha, but for stunning panoramic views, head out to Karon View Point and Phromthep Cape to snap some FOMO-inducing photographs. For your expedition through Phang Nga Bay, skip the cliché James Bond Island and book a tour with John Gray’s Sea Canoe . You’ll be put in the expert hands of your guide, who paddles you in and out of magical sea caves and hidden lagoons, aweing over large mangroves and possibly even a rare monkey sighting while you listen to the songs of cicadas.

Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay

Should you want some sand between your toes, west Phuket is home to some exquisite beaches. With soft, white sand and an abundance of waves, the Andaman Sea’s blue hue is soothing, evoking a kind of peacefulness within that is characteristic of the island.

Sri Panwa hotel

Sri Panwa hotel

Where to Stay When going to a beautiful beach destination like Phuket, your choice in accommodation is everything, and Sri Panwa is unlike any other resort you could imagine. Stretching over 40 acres of land on Cape Panwa, the breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea can be taken in from any vantage on the property. Each room is equipped with a balcony and infinity-edge pool, villas are outfitted with a coveted outdoor shower, and quarters are spacious. Start your day off with a buffet-style breakfast; schedule a relaxing massage at the Cool Spa; sunbathe at the private beach or one of the two pools onsite if you decide to not make use of your room’s balcony; grab cocktails on the rooftop deck at Baba Nest during sunset while taking in an unhindered, 360-degree view of Phuket; and end your night at Baba Soul Food with a scrumptious dinner. You’ll never want to leave.
