Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Bringing your pup along on adventures is one of the highlights of having a furry best friend. But it’s not always easy to do that while also juggling leashes, phones, and all the other items we usually have. Dog backpacks allow us to be hands-free for these endeavors, whether it’s active activities like hiking or camping or traveling in a city instead. Ideal for small to medium-sized dogs, these carriers typically also fit other key items like treats and water, and help distribute the weight across the back for more comfortable canine transport (versus a regular hand-carry option). They’re also a fantastic pick for senior dogs — or those with mobility issues — so that they can still get out and enjoy the outdoors.

With so many options for backpack carriers on the market, we helped narrow down the choices with a series of hands-on tests in the real world, conducted by dog owners over a period of six months. Fourteen products were evaluated for their performance, quality, value, and comfort, and we also spoke with Dr. Heidi Gordon and Dr. Beverly Blinn-Knapp, veterinarians at Burnt Hills Veterinary Hospital, for their expert input on selecting and using backpack carriers for our pets.

Best Overall

K9 sport sack plus 2 dog carrier.

  • Performance 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

It’s comfortable to wear and offers ample interior space for your pup.

Putting it on with your dog inside requires a bit of a learning curve.

The K9 Sport Sack Air is our top pick for its ability to evenly distribute a pet’s weight, even for dogs that are on the larger side. This backpack comes in three different sizes so it’s versatile for a larger range of animals (up to 40 pounds). The ventilated sides increase airflow and the cushioned back panel and shoulder straps with a wider design offer greater all-around comfort while walking with a pet inside.

There are two mesh side pockets for other small items and we found the detachable storage bag was perfect for carrying extra gear and that it easily clipped to the carrier. During testing, we felt our dog seemed relaxed and content while inside, too. The high-quality materials and construction make this a durable carrier that will go the distance, whether commuting with your pup or letting them rest a bit on a longer trek.

The Details: 16.93 x 13 x 17 (small), 11 x 10 x 19 (medium), 12 x 11 x 22 (large) | 16 ounces (small), 1.4 pounds (medium), 1.5pounds (large) | Nylon | Fits dogs 13-17 inches (small), 17-20 inches (medium), or 20-23 inches (large), all measured from base of collar to base of tail | Holds up to 40 pounds

Best for Hiking

Kurgo g-train dog carrier backpack.

  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

The adjustable straps help tailor the fit to your body for maximum comfort.

The optional stabilizing rods are tricky to install and take up 1-2 inches of interior space.

We love that the Kurgo G-train Dog Carrier Backpack is equipped to handle the outdoor elements, with a sturdy, waterproof bottom that helps to support your dog both while on your back and when the bag is set on the ground. The swiveling tether latches clip into your dog’s harness to help keep them secure while in the backpack, an important feature for hiking with dogs in a carrier. Top and front handles make the bag easy to handle, and the water-resistant fabric and removable, machine-washable interior padding means it’ll be a breeze to clean. The waist strap is helpful for comfort and stability while hiking as well. During testing, we appreciated that the shoulder straps and back panel featured nice padding, and that the bag itself had several convenient loops for hooking on additional items. There’s also another separate storage compartment for extra items like toys, treats, or kibble, and side pockets for water bottles.

The Details: 13 x 10 x 21 inches | 1.95 pounds | Polyester, synthetic fabric | Holds up to 25 pounds

Best for Air Travel

Apollo walker pet carrier backpack.

The padded straps and chest and waist buckles make it comfortable to wear on longer trips.

It’s important to make sure to check airline requirements for bag sizing before use, as it might not fit under all seats.

Our top pick for air travel is the Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack for its high level of comfort and ventilation due to the design having windows that fold down on several sides. We noticed this carrier was very easy to assemble, noting that connecting the floor padding inside took just seconds. We also appreciated that the carrier was helpful when our toy poodle became tired or wasn’t allowed to walk in particular areas of the airport. Depending on the size of your dog, they may be able to poke their head out the top opening when unzipped, allowing them to look around freely. While flying, the carrier is designed to keep your pup secure, with a leash tether to clip into their harness, along with claw-proof mesh and cozy, plush bedding.

The Details: 16.8 x 11.4 x 12.6 inches | 3.73 pounds | 300D polyester, fleece, mesh

YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier

The design is straightforward and easy to use.

It runs a little small.

We love the ease of using a sling carrier, and the Yudodo Reflective Pet Dog Sling Carrier comes in three sizes, fitting a wide variety of small dogs. With this carrier, it’s possible to enjoy hands-free activities with a pup in tow like running errands or even pushing a stroller. We found the sling was much more lightweight than expected, had no shoulder digging, and was very comfortable to wear; for a 12-pound dog, the medium size was ideal. The material is soft yet sturdy, and the mesh front maximizes airflow so your dog won’t get too hot either. If you prefer a crossbody design versus a traditional backpack, this sling is a fantastic option. The material is easy to wipe clean and one outer pocket on the front as well as a small inner pocket are great for holding small items like treats or poop bags. The drawstring closure makes getting in and out a simple task for your dog and the padded strap makes longer wear comfortable.

The Details: Faux leather, polyester | Fits dogs up to 8 inches long (small), 8-10 inches long (medium), or 10-11.5 inches long (large), all measured from base of collar to base of tail | Holds under 5 pounds (small) 5-10 pounds (medium), 10-14 pounds (large)

Best for Biking

Timbuk2 muttmover luxe backpack.

It’s very sturdy with a hearty structure.

It’s a little heavy.

The Timbuk2 Muttmover Luxe Backpack is ready to roll straight out of the packaging, and we love that it’s a well-constructed carrier with a hard bottom so it can stand on its own. This carrier offers some extra comfort features like wide, padded straps, a cushioned back pad, as well as chest and waist straps. It has plenty of zipping options and completely opened up, making it easier to put a pup inside. We also loved the fantastic extras it came with, like the bonus water bowl, side mesh panels, and a little window for a dog to peek out. This carrier is great for biking or hiking with your dog due to its solid design that will stay put while on the move and offers premium comfort for both you and your pup.

The Details: 13.39 x 9.84 x 18.7 inches | 3.53 pounds | Ripstop nylon and 900D poly | Fits dogs up to 20 pounds

Manhattan Portage Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack

Dog & Co.

  • Quality 4 /5

It has a waterproof interior.

The harness clip attachment is a bit tricky to use.

For those who want to carry their dog around in style, the Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack is our top pick for its high-end features, lightweight profile, and attention to detail. It comes with deep pockets that have the ability to store additional items such as a water bottle or a leash, as well as a leash clip attachment on the interior, two D-ring hooks on the straps, an exterior zip pocket for additional storage. We also appreciated the cushioning for the owner’s back and shoulders, but our favorite detail was the zipper flap that prevents dog fur from catching on it. We also found it was helpful that the carrier stands up on its own, so it’s easy to load and unload a pup and, and found our dog was relaxed while inside. This carrier’s sleek design makes it appear like a traditional backpack and is versatile to use for everything from walking around the city to traveling with your furry companion, too.

The Details: 17.5 x 11 x 9 inches | 1.8 pounds | 420D nylon | Fits dogs up to 15 pounds

Other Dog Backpack Carriers We Liked

Two dog backpack carriers we liked didn’t make our final list, but offer features that might be helpful to some pet owners.

Kurgo Nomad Backpack : This pack was comfortable to wear and distributed the dog’s weight evenly. It also features ample storage for extra items but it lacks enough ventilation, and we felt our dog would get too hot in the backpack during the warm, summer months.

Jespet & Goopaws Pet Backpack : This bag is versatile in that it can sit on its side and be used as a regular carrier as well as worn with backpack straps. The thick plastic mat on the bottom helps keep the bag’s shape, but it was just a bit too oversized for our needs.

For this test, we asked actual dog owners to put each backpack carrier through a series of hands-on experiments in the real world. While testing these packs, the dog’s comfort level was the top priority and our tests only continued if the pup was happy inside. First, all bags were unpackaged and assembled, if necessary, noting the difficulty of putting it together. Then, each backpack was evaluated on features such as smooth zippers, ample storage compartments, and material quality, before testing out its comfort level when wearing with a dog inside, as well as the ease of getting the dog secured in it.

Each owner walked around with the pack, taking note of how a dog reacted and if they seemed relaxed as time passed. Overall, the backpack carriers were evaluated on their performance, comfort, quality, and value. Over a three-week period, at least two real world tests were conducted using the pack, and each backpack will continue to be used for a period of six months after these initial tests, in order to collect more insights.

Tips for Buying a Dog Backpack Carrier

Consider where and when you’ll use it .

When shopping for a dog backpack carrier it’s important to consider how and where you’ll be using it. If you plan to use it on a bike, you’ll want something sturdier than if you were traveling on a plane with your dog and need something smaller that fits under the seat. Hikers will want to find a pack with waist and chest straps to help with comfort levels and to distribute the weight evenly. If you have a small breed dog and plan to bring it on quick errands or a walk, a sling might be the way to go for you.

Make sure your dog fits mention both size and weight limit

Most dog backpack carriers list the weight capacity or pack measurements to help shoppers decide what size works best for their specific pup. Some even include instructions for how to measure your dog correctly to determine which size pack to purchase. Make sure you don’t exceed the weight limit of the pack. You want to make sure your dog has enough room to sit inside the carrier comfortably

“It is important for the dogs to be able to choose positions so they can stay comfortable and avoid pressure sores,” Dr. Gordon shares.

“The dog should be able to sit in it and move a little [so] they can be comfortable,” Dr. Blinn-Knapp adds.

Prioritize safety and ventilation

Making sure your dog is comfortable, safe, and happy is key when using a dog backpack carrier. Packs that include a clip-in for the harness will help to keep your dog secure while on the go. Look for carriers designed with ample mesh ventilation areas to maximize air-flow for your dog as well.

“The carrier should have a lot of mesh in the sides so that they have plenty of ventilation,” Dr. Blinn-Knapp explains.

Consider bonus features

Taking a dog out on adventures big and small requires room for additional items such as treats, water, a leash, toys, etc. Consider purchasing a backpack carrier that has extra pockets or built-in storage areas. Clips on the straps, exterior front and side pockets will tick that box so you can remain hands-free and don’t have to carry another bag.

Yes, backpack carriers are safe for dogs as long as they are used appropriately and it’s the right size for your dog. Letting pups get used to the carrier before using it on a longer adventure is important, as well as proper ventilation.

“Some dogs may not tolerate being in the carrier at all while others may enjoy being carried and associate it with an adventure. Like any new or different experience I would recommend a slow introduction and stop if the dog seems restless or uncomfortable,” Dr. Gordon advises.

This depends on how well your dog tolerates being inside the carrier, however, it’s always important to give your dog breaks so they can get some fresh air, stretch their legs, use the bathroom, and move around.

“I would start with brief carries 5 to 10 minutes to get the dog acclimated. If the dog becomes restless then it’s time for a break. Once a dog is comfortable in the carrier you could probably go 1 to 3 hours but that length of time is something that would need to be worked up to,” Dr. Gordon shares.

The beauty of using a dog backpack carrier is that it can be used for a wide array of activities where you’d like your pup to join you. From backcountry camping to plane travel, the benefit of having your dog in a pack will come in handy in so many situations.

“With ours, the dog was fully contained inside. It was the right size on its side to fit under a plane seat and then you can carry the dog through the airport on your back. My husband says it's easier than it seems and reasonably comfortable,” shares Dr. Blinn-Knapp.

Avoid using a carrier for things like riding on a scooter or motorcycle, as well as with dogs that show signs of discomfort when inside. It’s not recommended to use this type of carrier for larger dogs as they are too heavy for it to be comfortable for either the dog owner or the pet.

When cleaning your dog backpack carrier, make sure to follow the instructions listed on the product website. Most will be made of water-resistant fabric with inserts or padding that can be easily wiped down or put into the washing machine.

From keeping your hands free while running errands to providing a restful perch for tired paws on long walks, a dog backpack carrier is a great way to bring along a small to medium-sized furry friend. There are various styles of dog backpack, which will allow a dog to sit, lie down, or rest in an upright pose. Of course, we also want the option to let its adorable head peek out.

We purchased and tested 14 of the most popular and top-performing dog backpacks. Each one was sent to a volunteer tester and their dog at home. While our dog participants were toted around, our human testers took careful notes. Following a methodology written in advance, our testers evaluated each dog backpack for its performance, quality, comfort (for both paw-ticipants ), and overall value.

Our favorite for small breeds is the Kurgo Nomad Backpack , which resembles a standard backpack with a zippered pocket on the front. The main compartment has a supportive frame and sturdy bottom to provide a pleasant space for dogs under 15 pounds. If you have a slightly heavier dog—up to 25 pounds—the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier is our top pick. This style puts dogs in an upright position, with their front legs out and room for their tail, putting their face right over your shoulder. Both are easy to wipe clean and offer additional pockets for carrying treats, collapsible water bowls, and more. There were also several other dog backpacks that our testers loved, which may work even better for you and your dog.

Best Overall for Small Breeds

Kurgo nomad carrier backpack.

  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

Waterproof bottom

Clip to keep dog attached to bag

Additional space for other items

Can be used as a carrier or backpack

Window for visability

Easy to clean

Dog can be fully covered

Could use more ventilation for warmer climates

Lacks more rigorous hiking features like a waistbelt

The dual-use Kurgo Nomad Carrier Backpack is suitable for small dogs that weigh less than 15 pounds, and it can be configured as either a backpack or a carrier, including both backpack straps and two beefy, dual-carry handles.

Our tester—who used the bag to separately cart around their small, 11-pound dogs—found the bag to be comfortable for all involved: “I think that this pack is very well constructed and well-balanced with several points of adjustment.”

The Kurgo Nomad benefits from a classic backpack look that doesn’t immediately suggest a pet carrier. Its broad back panel also offers several ways for your dog to travel, since the compartment can be fully opened or closed, or just allow enough room for a snout to poke out. There’s an interior tether that you can attach to your dog’s collar to keep it in place.

The interior of the Kurgo is lined with waterproof fabric, and the internal pad where your dog sits can be removed and machine washed. The exterior is similarly water-resistant, with a DWR coating that should keep your dog dry next time you’re caught in a downpour together. In addition to the external pockets, which include a large, zippered front compartment and two side stow pouches, the Kurgo Nomad has an interior tablet sleeve.

The bottom of the bag is waterproof with ventilation panels on each side. The zippered main compartment also has two separate zippers, so you can either zip it fully closed or zip up a separate mesh panel for additional ventilation. While we appreciated the multiple ways to ventilate, the mesh is a little too heavy-duty to allow as much airflow as our tester would have liked.

Dog Tester’s Weight: 11 pounds | Size Recommendation: Up to 15 pounds | Colors: Red, Blue | Dimensions: 15 x 11.25 x 7.5 pounds

Best Overall for Medium Breeds

K9 sport sack plus 2 dog carrier.

  • Performance 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

Detachable storage bag

Even distribution of weight

Mesh side pockets for ventilation and storage

Cooling side and back panel

Flap of fabric to keep fur from getting zipped up

Sternum strap and wide shoulder straps for support

Wide base to accommodate a dog's tail

Dog faces towards human's back, so it's easy to check on them

Easy to store when not in use

Finding a comfortable fit may take a little adjusting

If your dog is comfortable in an upright position, the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier will make it easy for you to bring it along on adventures. The backpack comes in three sizes, which can accommodate dogs ranging in weight from 8 to 40 pounds. The sizing chart also has length guidelines, so you should measure your dog from collar to base of tail to find the right fit.

Our tester’s senior dog is under 30 pounds and has joint issues, but once inside the backpack it was able to join its human on walks without discomfort. “This product is really helpful and distributes the weight of my dog well,” our tester said.

Once securely inside the backpack, a dog’s head and front legs will remain uncovered for snoot boops, high fives, and paw shakes. The sides are ventilated with small mesh pockets, and a padded back panel helps to keep your dog cool. For a human’s comfort, the bag features wide straps designed to relieve pressure and a padded back panel. However, our tester found perfectly distributing a larger dog’s weight to be a little finicky, taking multiple strap adjustments before they found a comfortable configuration.

The K9 Sport Sack also includes a 14 by 9 inch detachable storage bag, for carrying additional items like a collapsible water bowl, snacks, keys, and more.

Dog Tester’s Weight: Under 30 pounds | Size Recommendation: 8-40 pounds and 20-23 inches in length for large | Colors: Black, Mint, Gray, Tie-Dye | Exterior Dimensions: 12 x 11 x 22 inches for large

Best Outdoors

Kurgo g-train dog carrier backpack.

  • Comfort 4 /5

Sturdy construction with interior fiberglass rods

Reflective strips

Window for viability

Adjustable hip, chest, and shoulder straps

Padded shoulder straps and back

Storage compartment

Dog faces away from human’s back, which pulls weight in opposite direction

Placement of optional stabilizing rods reduces internal space for dog, and our tester found the rods difficult to install

Made with waterproof, dirt resistant fabric and featuring reflective strips and a sturdy base, the Kurgo G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack is designed for bringing your dog along on outdoor excursions.

“My dog was adequately supported, and I could walk around hands-free comfortably and set the pack down with him in it if needed,” remarked our tester, whose dog slightly exceeds the manufacturer’s suggested weight of up to 25 pounds.

Padded shoulder straps, along with an adjustable strap at the sternum and hip, offer support and help to alleviate pressure. However, when the backpack is on the bag is designed so that dog and human are facing in opposite directions. For our tester, this aspect of the backpack made it feel like the weight of their dog was also pulling away. The carrier comes with two optional stabilization rods that can be placed inside, but that slightly reduces the interior space, and our tester found installation to be tricky.

Mesh on both sides provides ventilation along with slim pockets for easy access to anything you want to keep on hand, like a water bottle or snacks. An internal padded pocket can accommodate a laptop, and there are loops on the exterior for attachment of other items.

Dog Tester’s Weight: 27 pounds | Size Recommendation: Up to 25 pounds | Colors: Black, Red, Navy, Blue | Exterior Dimensions: 13.5 x 10 X 21 inches

Best for Older Dogs

Apollo walker pet carrier backpack.

Mesh top and sides with ability unzip windows

Internal leash clip to secure dog via collar or harness

Interior padding

Sturdy yet light construction

Thick, padded shoulder straps

Strap at sternum and waist

Two side pockets

Bulkier than other styles

If you want to give your dog a place to rest while continuing with your walk, this sturdy dog backpack will allow you to continue enjoying the outdoors together. Our tester was pleased with the lightweight construction of the Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack, and their senior toy poodle had plenty of space to relax.

With mesh sides and top, your dog will be able to feel the wind across its little furry body to keep it cool. You can also unzip each mesh panel to let your dog poke its head out, and an internal clip that attaches to a collar or harness will keep your dog securely inside the backpack. For the wearer of the dog backpack, thick padded straps, along with a sternum and waist strap, will alleviate pressure on the back and distribute your dog’s weight.

The stable construction of this dog backpack offers a protected encasement for your pup, but you may find it more difficult to store, because it takes up more space.

Removable fleece pad

Airline approved (always check with your airline)

Streamline your airport experience with the Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Pet Backpack. “The build alone gives you comfort that your pet is comfortable on your back,” shared our tester who found the additional storage pockets and the removable fleece pad to be highly convenient for daily use and while traveling. The bag is designed for use as a pet carrier on commercial flights, but you should always confirm with your airline provider before arriving at the airport.

The backpack features breathable mesh on both sides, the front, and the top, and all four placements can be unzipped for access and viewability. Our tester found the adjustable shoulder straps with padding to be comfortable but felt that a sternum strap would make the backpack feel more secure. It also folds up easily for storage.

Best Sling Carrier

Yudodo reflective pet sling carrier.

Available in lots of colors

Strap has a pocket for a phone

Drawstring closure

Reflective strip

For small dogs that tend to be anxious, the cross-body design of this carrier will keep your furry friend close by. It distributes the weight of the dog more evenly than a shoulder bag and gives you the hands free experience of a backpack.

Our tester selected the medium sized YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier for their 12-pound dog. She felt that it offered ample space to keep her dog protected and secure without feeling restricted.

The lightweight sling weighs less than a pound on its own, has a drawstring opening, and is made with a breathable mesh. The adjustable strap has a large buckle closure and a pocket designed for a smartphone. Our tester, who also has a baby at home, found the sling to be very comfortable and convenient for taking her child in a stroller and her dog in the sling on walks and running errands.

The Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack from Manhattan Portage offers comfort for canines and their human companion. “This backpack gave us an added sense of security, and we really appreciated the attention to detail for the dog and the pet parent that was put into it,” remarked our tester.

The parcel is designed to stand on its own, making it easier to place your dog inside, where it will find a cushioned base. The bag is recommended for dogs under 15 pounds and is designed to give a dog plenty of space to move around as it pleases. An interior clip attached to a collar or harness will keep your dog safely inside, and a mesh panel at the top can be unzipped without your worrying about your dog escaping.

Each side has a mesh panel for airflow and a deep pocket with an elastic top. Our tester used the side pockets for walking essentials like a retractable leash and a collapsible water bowl. For more valuable items like your keys and phone, the front of the bag has a zippered compartment. Adjustable shoulder straps, a sternum strap, and padding along the back add comfort and help to distribute the backpack’s weight.

Cutest Design

Morik lion's den backpack.

Very lightweight with a sturdy base

Padded shoulder straps and adjustable waist strap adds stability

Breathable mesh panels on each side

Decorative lion ears, mane, arms, and tail add a touch of whimsy

Plush accents are not chew resistant

The eye-catching design of the Lion's Den Dog Backpack Carrier from Morik is practical, sturdy, and lightweight. While testing with an eight-pound Pomeranian, we found it convenient and comfortable to wear as a front-pack, keeping our doggie tester in full view while our hands remained free. The padded straps are adjustable and well positioned to give you and your dog a delightful experience, and the adjustable waist strap adds an extra layer of welcomed stability and support for the back of the wearer.

To get your dog inside, the top portion has a zipper located underneath the mane that glides open and close. Once your pup is seated inside, there is a leash tether connection and a firm padded platform with nylon fabric on one side and cozy fleece on the other. With the lion's mane portion zipped up, the design allows a dog's head to pop out. For security, a built-in toggle cord covered in soft fabric gives you the ability to customize the size of this opening to best fit around your dog's neck. For airflow, the carrier features mesh panels on each side along with elastic rimmed pockets with ample space to securely stash a leash in one and a collapsible water bowl in the other. Morik includes a bright yellow collapsible water bowl with each purchase, but we found it to be rather large for our small dog.

To find the right size for your dog, we highly recommend measuring their height while they are sitting down along with their current weight. The medium size is recommend for dogs up to 10 pounds, and the large is suitable for dogs up to 20 pounds. The plush lion legs, tail, and ears are adorable, but if you have a dog that loves to chew, they will likely find these accents irresistible.

Dog Tester: 8-pound Pomeranian | Size Recommendation: Up to 10 pounds (medium); up to 20 pounds (large) | Colors: Black, yellow | Exterior Dimensions: 13 x 8 x 14 inches (medium); 14 x 8 x 16 inches (large)

Our favorite for small breeds (under 15 pounds) is the Kurgo Nomad Backpack . It has a front flap that can be unzipped and opened, providing a window for your dog to be admired, along with an interior clip to keep your dog securely inside. For medium sized dogs (up to 25 pounds), the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier is our top pick. It’s lightweight and easy to clean, and your dog is free to give you a kiss whenever it pleases. It also comes with a removable pouch in case you want to bring along more snacks. If you are looking to keep your dog a little closer, the YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier offers the hands-free mobility of a backpack and more evenly distributes your dog’s weight than a shoulder bag.

How We Tested the Dog Backpacks

We selected 14 of the latest, top-performing dog backpacks available and sent each one to a real home with a dog for real-world testing.

Each of our canine participants was placed in and carried around in a dog backpack. Their human companions gathered insights and made notes about their shared experiencs over the course of two weeks and then provided their feedback within the following categories: performance, comfort, quality, and value. They were also asked whether they would recommend the dog backpack they tested.

Equipped with this first-hand information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the perfect dog backpack to suit your needs, habits, and preferences.

What to Look for in a Dog Backpack

Carrying capacity.

All of the dog backpacks we tested come with recommendations on weight, and some also include measurement guidelines. If your dog exceeds the weight by a pound or two, you might still be able to get it inside. You should also keep in mind how much weight you want to carry while walking around. The more structured dog backpacks, like the Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack from Manhattan Portage , tend to weigh a little more than foldable styles, like the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier .

Ventilation

To keep your dog cool and comfortable, make sure the bag you select is appropriate for the weather. Mesh panels, drawstring openings, and zippered windows allow for airflow to keep your dog cool in their backpack but may also leave it exposed to the elements. Of course, for the ultimate in airy ventilation, try giving you pup a ride in one of these bike dog baskets .

Yes, backpacks that are designed to carry a canine are safe for very small to medium-sized dogs. You should select a dog backpack that provides enough space to keep your dog comfortable and provides support for you and your dog. Dog backpacks are not interchangeable with regular backpacks.

Yes, but you need to find the backpack that works for you and your dog. You need to be comfortable carrying your dog on your back, and your dog needs to be comfortable inside the backpack. Some dog backpacks allow for a dog to sit and lay (more likely for smaller doggos) while others, like our pick for medium breeds, the K9 Sport Sack PLUS 2 , puts the dog in an upright position, which might not be comfortable for all dogs. Pay attention to your dog for any signs of discomfort .

No, some dogs are too big to fit into a dog backpack. You should also consider how much weight you want to carry on your shoulders and back to help you determine whether a dog backpack works for you and your pupper. If you usually carry your dog in a bag, then a dog backpack will probably be an easy transition and a welcomed respite for one side of your body.

Customer Reviews

Love it, my puppy is 4 months and a half old, when I have to speed up and get in time on appointments Tūiy get in backpack and carry on. Let’s go on speed walk, he loves stick out the sides pocket its head and a paw, I can’t zip all pockets now. The front pocket is big enough all I need for a walk and when Tūiy is not in the backpack I pack all he needs for a day outside home (food, leash, plaid, snack). Not disappointed of this purchase and recommended. Next trip plan to take my puppy, will try on the airplane.

Great backpack for young puppies! We have been carrying our puppy in this backpack to go on walks since she doesn't have all of her shots yet. It has enabled us to get out of the house and start exposing her to the great outdoors in a safe way. Our mini golden doodle is currently 5.5 pounds and has plenty of space to move around inside. We also use the backpack in the car to keep her in place for drives around town. Would definitely recommend. One area of feedback for the designers: the velcro that is supposed to hold back the zippable mesh flaps doesn't seem to hold very well and I often have to fiddle with the flaps so they don't block my puppy's view or hit her in the face; she also likes to chew on the velcro; another fastenor might be better.

I’ve had this backpack for nearly a year and I fly monthly with my dog. It works perfectly for that and the extra water bottle pocket, laptop sleeve, and extra pocket in the front are just right. Fits under delta southwest and American Airlines seats. Might have issues flying with dogs on the larger size depending on the airline as they make them turn 180 in there lying down (he’s 12lbs but has long legs). Roverlund is a great company too, very responsive to emails and sent me a new bag bc the zipper broke on mine.

This backpack is awesome! My little guy is about 22 pounds, he’s pretty tall for his size but the zipper opening on the top allows him to poke his head out for more comfort. Also comfortable to wear on the back. Would highly recommend! Also TSA friendly which was the main reason I purchased.

@Sir_Remington_Acevedo loves his back pack! He is 22Lbs and the wide straps make carrying him comfortable for my shoulders.

Before you start buying a matching carrier for your favorite luggage , picking out the best carry-ons to strap your pet on top of or swapping out your favorite beach-ready tote for one that fits a pup, check out our recommendations for the best dog carriers of 2022.

There's a reason Away is such a popular travel brand (and why we rated them our favorite overall luggage ). Their high-quality products don't stop at luggage carry-ons. The Away Pet Carrier is chic, sleek and durable, and it comes in two colors. While testing, we found this bag to be made of high-quality materials. We particularly loved the retractable privacy screen which can be rolled up so your pup can look through a mesh window, or rolled down if you want to reduce their stimulation. Use the strap on the back to easily slip the carrier over the handle of your luggage, or use the two latches to safely secure your pet to the seatbelt in your car. While we weren't able to test the Away carrier on the road, the latches are simple to secure and the luggage comes with easy-to-follow instructions for how to properly make your pet car-ready. The best part, it meets all of the Federal Aviation Administration requirements so you shouldn't have a problem toting this on a plane.

• Available Sizes: One size • Weight: 4.3 pounds • Materials: Nylon, leather • Dimensions: 18.7" x 10.8" x 10.8" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 18 pounds

If you've got a pet that hates getting into a carrier, Le Sure's collapsable pet carrier will help you get them inside in a breeze. Its larger-than-average zipper section makes it incredibly easy to load pets of all sizes . The mesh top can be zippered all the way shut for pets who try to make a break for it or left open halfway so your furry friend can poke out their head and take in the scenery. Our experts love that the carrier has quite a bit of storage space and can easily be slipped over the handle of a suitcase for seamless travel. The medium-sized carrier is compliant with TSA regulations so you don't have to worry about fitting it under your seat on the airplane. Once you're done traveling, remove the fluffy base mat and fold the bag up for storage. Plus, if you're in a pinch the shoulder strap can be clipped onto your pup and transform into a last-minute leash if you forget where you packed your real one. One thing we noticed while testing, however, was that the bag had a noticeable smell upon unpacking, but it dissipates over the a few days after opening.

• Available Size: Medium; Large • Weight: 2.9 pounds • Materials: Polyester, mesh • Dimensions: 17" x 11.8" x 10"; 19" x 13" x 10'' • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 15 pounds; 18 pounds

For the fashion-forward pet parent, Wild One's Everyday Carrier is the dog purse of your dreams. It comes in three colors, including a lilac that's great for summer. According to the company, each carrier is made using recycled materials and uses 80 water bottles to create its knit body. While testing, we loved that this carrier came didn't require too much assembly, and we found the two different length straps very useful. We also found the sides of the bag to be taller than other similar tote bags, which makes it easier for a larger pet to squeeze inside and still feel secure. When standing on its own, this carrier retains its shape and doesn't cave in on itself, so it's easier to drop your pooch inside with less of a struggle. • Available Sizes: One size • Weight: 3.44 pounds • Materials: Polyester • Dimensions: 21.5" x 7.5" x 14.3" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 20 pounds

The Sherpa Original Deluxe is a great no-frills option that is budget friendly and won't give you any trouble at the airport. According to the brand, all sizes of this carrier are approved for use on most domestic airlines. The small and medium sizes are Guaranteed on Board , which means that if your pet is in one of those carriers, you're guaranteed to not be turned away at the gate, and if you are, you'll be reimbursed for all your pet fees. While it's not the lightest carrier you can buy, the versatility of the shoulder strap and handles mean you won't have any trouble carting your pooch around for short trips. It has a wider top-loading opening than a few of the other options we saw, which makes it easy to get your pet in and out of the carrier. While testing, we did notice that the carrier lacked a safety leash, so make sure your pet is securely fitted into the carrier at all times and that the top and front are fully zippered shut. • Available Sizes: Small; Medium; Large • Weight: 3.45 pounds • Materials: Polyester, mesh • Dimensions: 15" x 10" x 8.5"; 17" x 11" x 10.5"; 19" x 11.8" x 11.5" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 8 pounds; 16 pounds; 22 pounds

This hard-sided dog carrier takes just a few minutes to put together and doesn't require any extra tools to assemble. Unlike some other hard-sided carriers we tested, we didn't experience any bending or warping of the handle when carrying it around with a 15-pound weight inside it. Since the only way to transport the carrier is by the handle on top, we don't recommend this one for long-distance walks since it's not particularly comfortable. It is a good option if you need something to keep your pet in while at the vet, on public transportation or elsewhere. The plastic locking mechanism is fairly intuitive and the case comes with instructions that are easy to comprehend. One of our testers noted that while it feels less heavy-duty than some other hard-sided cases, it has truly stood the test of time and has not deteriorated with use. We don't recommend using the hooks on top however as we noticed they can come detached from the carrier if they're turned at the slightest angle. • Available Sizes: Toy; Extra Small; Small • Weight: 2.14 pounds • Materials: Plastic, metal • Dimensions: 17.9" x 11.5" x 12" ; 20.7" x 13.2" x 14.1" ; 22.5" x 15.2" x 14.9" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: No recommendations; we tested the Toy size with 15 pounds

Nothing says beach-ready like this canvas tote from Lands' End. According to the brand, this sturdy carrier is made from 100% cotton canvas and features a water-repellant base and trim so you don't have to worry about setting it down in a puddle. One of our testers has used this bag to frequently tote around her 20-pound pooch and has experienced very little wear and tear aside from the scuffing of the bottom from placing it on the NYC subway. The short shoulder straps mean it's not ideal for long trips as they can put too much pressure on one arm over time. But it's perfect for public transportation or non-airline travel. It's more stylish than some other bags at this price point and has a built-in safety leash that's a great feature if your pet is too tall to zip inside. • Available Sizes: One size • Weight: 1.94 pounds • Materials: Cotton canvas • Dimensions: 16.5" x 8" x 12.5" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 20 pounds

As the home away from home for the TikTok-famous NYC corgi Maxine , this dog carrier backpack can hold pets up to 50 pounds, which is by far the largest maximum weight of all the bags we've seen. It features handles on all four sides and a wide zipper section to make it easier for you to load your pooch in and out. The bag also comes with a chest buckle and easy-to-adjust shoulder straps to make it as comfortable to wear as possible. When testing, we found that this bag felt high-quality and had a ton of added accessories like the reinforced neck collar that offers your pup a bit more support for their head. "The runway" loading style makes it incredibly easy to board your pup into the bag when you fully unzip it and lie it flat on the ground. While it's great for a day out on the town, public transportation or just a cute way to bring your dog on an adventure, the company recommends that you don't carry your pet for longer than an hour at a time before taking a break.

• Available Sizes: Small; Regular • Weight: 1.96 pounds • Materials: Polyester, mesh • Dimensions: 25” x 13.5" x 4” • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 50 pounds

If you've been on the lookout for a sling-style carrier to turn you into the ultimate pet parent, this one from Yudodo is a strong contender. The super soft mesh is comfortable for both you and your pet, and the extra-wide padded strap is easy to adjust. It's not furry inside so it might not be as warm as some of the fleece-lined options, but it's versatile enough to use in warmer and colder weather. While testing, we especially loved how easy it was to check in on your pooch since their head peeks out from the top of the pouch. This also gives them a better opportunity for engagement since they can easily look at their surroundings. We also like that this sling leaves both your arms free. Plus, the little mesh pocket on the front perfectly fits your phone. • Available Sizes: Small; Medium; Large • Weight: 12 ounces • Materials: Mesh • Dimensions: 15.0" x 3.9" x 7.9" ; 15" x 3.9" x 7.8" inches • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 5.5 pounds; 10 pounds; 15 pounds

The chic Maxbone backpack is made of versatile nylon that's comfortable on both you and your pet's skin. One of the main benefits of a backpack carrier is that your hands and arms are free to text, carry another bag or open a door. While we haven't gotten our hands on this nylon version, when testing the regular neoprene Go Everywhere Backpack we immediately noticed that the product looked and felt high quality with strong stitching that didn't buckle under pressure and smooth zippers that didn't snag. We especially love the tiny mesh window that lets your pet get a little fresh air. Or it can be zipped down so your pooch can poke their little head out. There's also mesh on the top panels of the bag so you don't have to worry about them overheating. The bag retained its shape while empty and its sturdy bottom means that your pet has somewhere to sit or lay even while the bag is held upright. While the neoprene bag did get scuffed up fairly quickly on the light fabric, the dark nylon of this bag might not experience the same issue.

• Available Sizes: One size • Weight: 3.32 pounds • Materials: Nylon • Dimensions: 16" x 12.5" x 9.5" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 17 pounds

K&H Travel Bike Backpack

For bikers who want to share their love of adventure with their furry friend, the K&H travel backpack lets you do just that. Whether you're using it to attach your pet to the front of your ride, or just slinging it over your shoulder like a backpack, this versatile bag makes it easy to take your pet with you wherever you go. It comes with a front mounting system that can be installed on the front of your bike so you can peek down at your pet while you ride. While testing, we loved the large mesh front panel that lets your dog get some fresh air. You can even choose to unzip the top of the pouch to let your pet stick their head out and feel the wind on their face. The mesh pockets on the side are great for storing a few larger items but we noticed they aren't terribly secure, so best to avoid putting valuables in there. While we didn't get to hit the trails with a pup in this bag yet, we were able to hook up the mounting system to a bike and fit the bag on it. We found it to be quite secure and have easy-to-follow directions.

• Available Sizes: One size • Weight: 1.2 pounds • Materials: Polyester, mesh • Dimensions: 9.5" x 14" x 15.8" • Maximum Weight Recommendation: 15 pounds

How we test dog carriers

maxine at good housekeeping in the little chonk maxine one bag, a good housekeeping testing image

Our team at the Good Housekeeping Institute reviews pet gear of all kinds from dog beds to dog harnesses . We read hundreds of reviews to discover which dog carriers were worth considering, then tested over a dozen of them in our Lab and sent them along to our consumer testers to evaluate them in real-world conditions. We based our recommendations on extensive research of the market, and testing. We assessed each brand and materials used, tested styles in real life and considered the following factors: ✔️ Comfort and safety: We made sure that each pick could comfortably fit a pet of the recommended size and handle the maximum weight. For safety, we tested each bag by carrying it around filled with sandbags of the maximum recommended weight for each carrier. We assessed how comfortable they were to hold and hung them up for over an hour to see if the weight caused any puckering seams, stretched fabric or rips.

✔️ Ease of use: Squeezing an active pooch into a tiny pet carrier isn't the easiest thing in the world, so we considered carriers with wide zipper sections, top and front-loading options and quick installation so you can get your pet inside before they have the time to start squirming.

✔️ Materials: It's important to look at what each carrier is made of to ensure that it's soft enough for your pet to be comfortable but durable enough that their claws won't scratch right through. "Performance materials like nylon and polyester are ideal because they're lightweight and durable," says Lexie Sachs , the Executive Director of the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab at Good Housekeeping. "In fact, these are fabrics you typically find in backpacks, luggage and other bags. For more breathability, look for mesh ventilation."

We also consider how easy it is to clean these particular materials if they're water-resistant or easy to scuff up.

✔️ Purpose: Depending on where you're planning to take your dog, different carriers support different needs. Backpacks and front sling carriers can leave your hands free to multitask, while soft-sided carriers are great for fitting under airline seats. Hard-sided carriers work wonders when transporting your pet to the vet. Tote or purse carriers are also good if you're just looking for something to sling over your shoulder on a day out. We assessed each style to find the best of the best.

What to Look for in a Dog Carrier Backpack

C onsider your dog’s body type and personality

There is an extraordinary variety between dogs’ body types, from dogs who are long and slender to stocky dogs built like little bowling balls, and everything in between. The best carrier backpack for one body type may not be best for another. Very small dogs with delicate limbs may benefit from a carrier that allows them to sit inside and look out a mesh window. Dogs with long bodies and necks may like a backpack carrier that allows them to stick their heads out. Dogs who are very wiggly inside a carrier may benefit from a carrier that allows them to stick all four legs and head out.

Adjustable Leg and Head Openings

A proper dog backpack style should allow adjustment to the shoulder straps, leg openings, and head openings to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable. Too tight would restrict their circulation over time, while too much room could risk their safety.

Breathable Fabric

As with any wearable dog gear, you’ll want to ensure the fabric is cool and nonrestrictive on your dog. Without ventilation, they could more easily overheat.

Weather Resistant Fabric

If using your backpack carrier outside, try to find a style with weather-resistant If it starts to rain, your pup may not be too happy if they get rained on.

Extra Storage

Many pet backpacks come with added storage pockets for small items. Since you’ll be carrying your dog on your hikes, you’ll want some added storage on their pack so you won’t have to haul additional (poop) bags or supplies .

Frequently Asked Questions

Note: Leave a comment below, if you have a question, and we’ll get it added to the list.

Q: How long can a dog spend in a backpack carrier?

A: The time that your dog can spend in their carrier varies dramatically by dog and carrier, but as a rule, it is a good idea to give your dog a chance to get out of the carrier and stretch their legs every hour or so. Make sure to check on your dog regularly to be sure they are breathing comfortably and do not seem too hot or restless.

We are going on a family canoe trip. We gave a Maltipoo who is 10 pounds and also a therapy and diabetic alert for for me. I want get in a front dog carrier. Which one would be the best and safest fir her and us.

I’m looking at a backpack as well and was looking at your K9 Sport ones, probably a large in the air model- i have to measure to make sure. I’m not sure my dog will go for it but there are times where I think it would be beneficial for me. I’d love so test “sample” as well if possible 😉 It is hard to find one that will work for a 28lb dog so I really like that yours is rated for dogs that size. Mainly one want because I take my dog everywhere and when I do travel I like to go on tours. Some tours allow ogs but you end up carrying the dog more than they walk (because my dog has a mind of her own) so I want to just have her in a backpack and walk the tour with her…..

March 17, 2020 at 8:51 am

I’d definitely consider the K9 Sport packs, especially for dogs over 20 lbs. I will warn you that carrying ~30 lbs on your back “everywhere” will definitely be tiring, no matter what pack you go with. But as far as comfort for medium/large dogs, I think K9 Sport packs are currently the best.

I’m currently in the market for something I can use to carry one or two of my 3 dogs with me while riding my scooter around town. They are all small dogs.

The problem is that I am finding very little information for pet carriers in for scooters/motorcycles or backpacks in general. There are options out there but the market is seriously lacking. What I do find is not very visually appealing either.

Information is needed, I don’t know what to buy any more today than I did a month ago. I need pup safety and comfort, storage for pup supplies, a compartment for my stuff(Laptop and paperwork mostly), storage for my incidentals, the ability to be be used as a backpack and mounted on my scooter would be ideal but either one would suffice. And finally it absolutely must be under $100 and it absolutely must look cool. Everything I find looks so foul.

' src=

December 10, 2019 at 6:44 am

Do these work for jogging too? I’m getting a Maltese soon and want to take her jogging with me, however, because of her size she might need to be on a carrier for most of the trip. I wouldn’t want the up and down motion of the running to bother her.

Looking for a small to medium size backpack dog carrier. Not a strong back (nor slenter body 😅) so I need a sternum strap as well as a waist-strap. What would suit our needs the best?

August 21, 2020 at 1:39 pm

I’d recommend taking a look at the K-9 Sport Sack. It depends on what size/style you go with, but they have a mixture of nice waist/sternum straps.

What to consider when buying a pet carrier

Each airline has its own set of rules regarding pets traveling with you inside the plane, or placed underneath the aircraft in the cargo hold. If your pet is traveling with you inside the plane, its carrier will need to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Generally speaking, that means your in-flight pet carrier shouldn't exceed 45 linear inches (length + width + height), or roughly 21.5 by 15.5 by 9 inches -- according to AAA .

For dog crates traveling as cargo, the crate must be enclosed, but have ventilation openings occupying at least 16% of total wall space on two opposing walls. The crate must open easily, but should also be durable enough to sustain normal cargo transit logistics (loading, unloading and transportation). When shopping for airline-approved pet carriers, it's a good idea to check your carrier's website first for restrictions.

Most soft-sided travel carriers fit comfortably underneath the seat in front of you so your pet stays close to you during the flight. Common features include mesh sides or windows for breathability, removable pads for comfort, straps to attach the carrier to a seat belt or your luggage and pockets to stash essentials.

If your pet can only fly in the cargo space underneath the plane, look for hard-sided pet carriers to offer the most protection during the flight.
