Night Ranger is a hard rock band from San Francisco, California, US that has achieved great success with their heavy hitting rock songs and their emotional power ballads.

Night Ranger formed in the early ‘80s and consisted of drummer/vocalist Kelly Keagy, bassist/vocalist Jack Blades, guitarists Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson, and keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald. The band was initially performing under the name, The Rangers, but changed their name to Night Ranger in 1982 due to a country band already having claimed the name The Rangers. By the end of 1982 the band had already signed a record deal with Boardwalk Records and released their debut album “Dawn Patrol”. The album was commercially successful, reaching the No. 38 position on the US Billboard 200. The album also contained the singles “Sing Me Away” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me”, which were also turned into music videos and received much airplay on MTV.

In 1983 the band switched over to MCA Records and released their second studio album “Midnight Madness”. The album reached the No. 15 position on the US Billboard 200 chart and gained Night Ranger a larger fan base. Instead of playing concerts as the opening act, Night Ranger was now playing headlining shows. The album contained three hit singles: “(You Can Still) Rock in America”, “Sister Christian”, and “When You Close Your Eyes”. The power ballad “Sister Christian” is one of the most popular songs that Night Ranger wrote, and it was ranked No. 32 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s. The song reached the No. 5 position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and has been featured in several films such as “Boogie Nights” and “Friday the 13th”.

In 1985 the band released the album “7 Wishes”, which contained the singles “Sentimental Street” and “This Boy Needs to Rock”. The album was a commercial success and was later certified platinum. The band was able to achieve commercial success over the radio because they were very similar to other popular hard rock bands, but they were also slightly cleaner than other bands like Motley Crue and Ratt. Night Ranger’s guitarists, Gillis and Watson, were also praised for their dueling guitar techniques and were constantly featured in guitar magazines.

During the years between 1984 and 1987 Night Ranger contributed songs to many film soundtracks. Their songs were featured in such movies as “Teachers”, Explorers”, “Sixteen Candles”, and “Out of Bounds”. They also provided the title theme for the film “The Secret of My Success”. The remaining years in the 80s showed Night Ranger releasing two more albums. “Big Life” was released in 1987 and “Man in Motion” was released in 1988. After “Man in Motion” was released the band briefly disbanded. During the time Night Ranger was broken up Jack Blades formed the band Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw, and Jeff Watson pursued a solo career.

In 1996 the five original members reunited Night Ranger and later released the 1997 album “Neverland” and the 1998 album “Seven”. Although these albums weren’t significantly successful in the US, they were however very popular in Japan and garnered Night Ranger a large fan base in Asia. Later in their career, Alan Fitzgerald and Jeff Watson would leave Night Ranger once again and would be replaced by Eric Levy on keyboards and Keri Kelli on guitars. In 2007 Night Ranger released “Hole in the Sun”, which was their follow up to their 1998 album “Seven”. In 2014 they released the album “High Road”, which contained the single “Knock Knock Never Stop”.

Night Ranger has been pleasing fans with their headlining shows ever since they released “Midnight Madness”. They have toured all over the world and played gigs with many notable artists such as ZZ Top, Ozzy Osbourne, and Kansas.

Live reviews

1 June 2018 ~ Austin Texas

The billing was Night Ranger and Dennis De Young, the venue was the Austin City Limits Arena (Moody Performance Centre). Night Ranger came on stage a little past 8:00 P.M.starting with music from the 2017 album, Don’t Let Up, beginning with Some How, Some Way...Running Out of Time...Truth, and moving into a selection music from back in the day( Sister Christian, Rock in America, Sentimental Street, and Night Ranger); sprinkling in some songs from Damn Yankees. Jack Blades was so personable, almost like an old friend sitting in the living room just talking and jamming. I exspecially like how he talked about wondering about 6th Street, making note about the bar scene filled with live music in each one of them. It was refreshing his down to earthness and that of 5e rest of the band. This was the third time I have seen them in 35 years. They were as good as ever. Kelly Keagy was awesome and it was great to see him after his heart surgery. His vocals were spot on and just as I remembered them from years ago. At the end of the concert he threw his gloves into the crowd and my daughter caught one; it was a very special moment for our family. My wife was given a guitar pick from Brad Gillis, who spent a lot of time playing in front of us. They were fantastic and we will see them again. This was the most enjoyable night we’ve spent in ages; it was just like spending time with old friends that we haven’t seen in years. Thank you for a great evening and a special, memory for my family. It is bands like Night Ranger that bring generations together and gives us older folks a bit of our youthfulness back....thanks guys again for a great time!

Night Ranger, wow, well done! After 30 years of performance muddled in with various different band members coming and going and a lengthy hiatus, Night Ranger rocked the house last night and were better than ever. The first five albums sold over ten million copies world wide, but after their success plateaued, they disbanded. I was a little apprehensive that their reforming would leave them weaker, but the have compensated with this through their dedication to the music.

It was a massive throwback, and their energy and dedication to every note they were playing was infectious. The audience were singing and dancing along with such energy everyone was exhausted by the end of the set – but in the best way! If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to tell that they weren’t the original band members, they worked together so closely and in perfect flawless harmony.

They closed with Rock in America, the track that everyone seemed to know all the words to and it was an epic climax to the evening. Although I had to shoot off almost straight away, the band members came out and it was great to see them chatting to the audience and taking photos – really friendly guys. I’ll definitely be going back if they tour again!

Whenever hearing night ranger you will be taken on a trip back to your happy place, the 80's. Night Ranger gives 100% each and every time they hit the stage and seeing them last night was no different. This was the first time since dawn patrol that I have sceen them in an actual indoor venue and it was absolutely amazing. The sound was incredible and flawless. The crowd was awesome singing along with all the songs. I love that they changed the set list and no more covers. My only complaint is about the high road album, please play another song in addition too high road. Love knock knock and coming home... #uberfan #nightranger tami

Recently saw Night Ranger in Minneapolis at the Pantages Theater. They sounded just great and have alot of energy on stage. It was fun to hear all of the hits we remember from our youth. The guys seem to really enjoy playing together, plus it is nice see Keri Kelli rocking on stage!! Will definitely see them again.

As always Night Ranger put on an engertic show. Kelly's voice wasn't at full strength. The band showed it's versatility and did mainly songs Jack sings including several Damn Yankees songs. I have seen them multiple times. So for me it was refreshing hearing Jack do a majority of the leads.

This is one of the best live bands of my generation...always put on a crowd-pleasing show. They seem personable on stage, and engage the participants with every song they perform. Show was fantastic and would pay to see them again and again!

Go see these guys! They still rock...and are very down to earth, humble and extremely talented. Night Ranger still rocks in America, ya'll! The original band members sound great and the newer band members are great talents, as well.

ALWAYS an entertaining show. Night Ranger is a band of great musicians. They still sound great! My only complaint? Play your own songs and drop the covers. You have enough great songs to fill a two hour show on your own.

Night Ranger is a very under-rated band. Great musicians, great vocals, lots of energy and involvement, and very versatile. I always enjoy seeing this band. I would highly recommend that you check them out.

NIGHT RANGER - 40 Years And A Night With Contemporary Youth Orchestra Concert Premieres October 21 On AXS TV; Video Trailer

Legendary rockers, Night Ranger, are releasing a brand-new live album, titled 40 Years And A Night With Contemporary Youth Orchestra, on October 20. The live album and live performance footage will be available on CD, Vinyl (including limited editions), DVD, Blu-ray, and digitally across all streaming platforms worldwide. This release comes as they approach the anniversary of date it was recorded, just one year ago in Cleveland on November 9, 2022.

Night Ranger: 40 Years And A Night With Contemporary Youth Orchestra will premier on AXS TV on October 21 at 8 PM, ET. Check out a video trailer below:

“It was a dream come true to have Night Ranger music accompanied by an entire symphonic band… including our own! Although now, we’re spoiled, and we want to carry the orchestra with us everywhere we go!!” - Jack Blades

“Playing the show with the Cleveland CYO and being able to record It was an incredible and unique experience. To have younger musicians not only embrace but enjoy playing our music was a new high for us as a band. You could see all the hard work they put into rehearsals, and finally getting to perform it live was an incredible new benchmark in our career.” - Kelly Keagy

“I can check this one off my bucket list. Having the CYO backing us for this show was just amazing and it really took Night Ranger to another level. Looking forward to its release and sharing with the world!” — Brad Gillis

This one-of-a-kind, one night only Night Ranger performance with Cleveland’s own Contemporary Youth Orchestra was at the Key Bank State Theatre in Cleveland, OH on November 9, 2022. The Contemporary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is made up of 80+ musicians aged 12 to 18, representing more than 40 schools in Ohio. It fosters students’ technical ability and creative growth in both an inspiring and supportive community. The students performed alongside Night Ranger throughout their entire set and these unique renditions of their greatest hits was also their first time ever performing with a symphonic orchestra live. All of this is what made this a truly once in a lifetime Night Ranger concert event.

Contemporary Youth Orchestra was founded in 1995 and its mission is to change lives through the study and performance of new and contemporary music and introduce students to opportunities in the creative arts industries. The CYO vision is to create experiences that foster imagination, develop independent thinkers, and inspire confidence through music. Contemporary Youth Orchestra includes advanced ensembles that focus on the study and performance of orchestral works by living composers. In residence at Cuyahoga Community College (Metro Campus), CYO has grown to include a full orchestra, wind, string, and percussion ensembles. CYO inspires and nurtures young musicians as they are challenged to explore creativity, enhance their work ethic, and increase their capacity to function as a team. CYO musicians bring the energy of youth and the quality of professional playing to the concert stage. CYO has previously collaborated with Jefferson Starship, Styx, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, and Kenny Loggins (among others) for orchestral concerts featuring the artists’ work.

Night Ranger continue to tour around the world in celebration of their 40th Anniversary. See Night Ranger on the road for the remainder of 2023. Click here for full list of dates.

Why Night Ranger’s ‘Big Life’ Was the Beginning of the End

By the time Night Ranger arrived at the release of their fourth album, they were poised to repeat the success of the previous three. But record company politics and a movie opportunity that soured took the band on a different ride.

Released Feb. 25, 1987,  Big Life wore the scars and effects of nearly a decade of nonstop hard work. “We had such huge success and the band, we were pretty severely medicated during that period of time,” bassist and vocalist Jack Blades laughed during a 2019 conversation with UCR. “But there’s some good stuff on that record.”

The San Francisco group had logged three straight albums, two of them platinum, collectively filled with a slew of hit singles, including “ Sister Christian ” from 1983’s Midnight Madness . The ballad, with Night Ranger drummer Kelly Keagy delivering the gritty, emotional vocal, gave the group a real taste of what it felt like to have huge success at both MTV and radio. The song flew all of the way to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984.

7 Wishes , released in 1985, matched the platinum success of its predecessor and put three additional Top 10 singles on the band’s musical resume. Still, they weren’t happy with the sound of the album and also wanted to make good on a long-held wish to just stay home in the Bay Area to make their next record.

Deciding to break with Pat Glasser, who had produced the group’s previous three LPs, Night Ranger began to meet with prospective producers. “I remember that Ron Nevison showed up. We had lunch in Sausalito and he’s quite a flamboyant character and a really great guy,” Keagy tells UCR now. “He’s super nice.”

Nevison had been in the studio for legendary sessions with the Who and Bad Company in the ‘70s and his success continued to grow into the ‘80s. Coming off a string of hit albums with bands like Survivor and Heart , his plate was crowded.

Still, he was keenly interested in taking on the project. “I really wanted to do that album, but a month or two later something came up. I had my manager, Michael Lippman, call their manager and pass,” Nevison tells UCR via email. “They were really pissed when I turned that down -- so pissed, in fact, that I was afraid when the Damn Yankees project came up two years later, that Jack Blades would sabotage it.”

He invited Blades out to his house in Bel Air and the pair had a nice afternoon. “He admired an American Indian artifact I had,” the producer remembers. “He said he collected that stuff. I told him I would let him have it if the Damn Yankees album went platinum. It did and I did.”

Night Ranger eventually landed on Journey producer Kevin Elson, who signed on to shepherd the album sessions at Fantasy Studios. From the get go, it was a move which felt good. “He had a real strong melodic sense of melody,” Keagy explains. “You could tell if [he liked something] you played for him. His face would light up. He worked on the songs with us to make sure it was the best that it could be.”

“For me, Big Life was a different album in that it had a lot more keyboards in it,” Blades said in 2017. “I’m not sure that I liked that.” In general, the record certainly sounded more technology driven. “It was my introduction to using a Linn drum machine,” Keagy shares. “I bought one and got really familiar with it. I started to use some of the sounds out of it, including on some of the song intros.”

Keyboardist Alan “Fitz” Fitzgerald was a wizard when it came to building up his parts on Big Life . “Some of the sounds that he used on our albums, weren’t heard before he used them,” Keagy points out, noting that the musician would spend months creating, blending and perfecting the various elements. “He was an absolute genius. Some of the sounds were amazing.”

Witness Fitzgerald’s work on the intro to the album’s title track, which sounds like it might have escaped from a Steven Spielberg film. It worked well as a tantalizing introduction to the album, giving way to the twin guitar attack led by Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis. “Big Life” set the stage well for the experience of listening to the rest of the record.

Listen to 'Big Life' by Night Ranger

“Secret of My Success” is probably the most well-known song from Big Life and one that came together outside of the regular album sessions. Bombastic and over the top, David Foster was at the helm, to help the band craft a huge single.

Earmarked as the title track for the Michael J. Fox movie of the same name, the Canadian producer came armed and ready. He had put together the identifiable introduction that would become a signature element of the song.

As Keagy arrived, he found Foster hard at work. “He was holding the reel of tape on a microphone stand and feeding it through a tape machine and those two tracks were recording to another tape machine,” the drummer and vocalist remembers.

The musician quickly discovered the visible passion the producer had for his craft. “He’s holding this microphone and this piece of tape is just going in a loop,” Keagy details, imitating the pattern of the sequence. “I’d never seen anything like that in my life. I’m like, ‘What are these guys doing? These guys are mad scientists!' He looks over at me and he winks at me.”

Keagy summarizes the experience of working with Foster as “awesome,” though the commercial results didn’t fully deliver what the band had been promised. “We’re all sitting around the TV watching the trailer for the movie and it’s like [sings ‘ Walking on Sunshine ’ by Katrina and the Waves] and I’m like ‘What?,’” Blades remembered in 2014.

Listen to 'Secret of My Success' by Night Ranger

“The movie people didn’t take our song, ‘The Secret of My Success,’ instead they put ‘Walking on Sunshine’ in there,” he continued. “Talk about the high hard one -- we were just like ‘You’ve got to be frikkin’ kidding me.’ We were calling everybody - we were calling attorneys and everybody and they were like, ‘Well, that’s what film people do.’ It’s like ‘Fuck you, we’re going to do what we want.’ So that just crumbled the whole thing -- the whole rollout that we were doing and everything like that was just a disaster.”

It cast an unfortunate pall on any potential success for the Big Life album, a record which already had seen its share of challenges, including the band collectively helping Blades say goodbye to his father, who passed away during the making of the LP.

“Jack and I got on the phone and discussed the chorus in ‘Carry On,’" Keagy remembers. “[His dad] Ned was passing and I thought, ‘What would his father say to him?’ He would want him to carry on. He would want him to keep going,” Keagy explains. “I think that’s where the chorus came up. I came to Jack and I said, ‘What if this was the chorus?' You know, 'I’ll be here to carry on/ I’ll be running down the road beside you. '"

Listen to 'Carry On' by Night Ranger

Personally, Keagy puts at least part of the blame for the failure of Big Life at the feet of “Secret of My Success.” “I’m not totally clear on what everybody else thinks. But I think at the time, we were kind of caught up in that whole thing of record, tour, record, tour,” he says. “I think when they released 'Secret of My Success,' the public and critics heard that song [with] all of those phony sounding horns and stuff. I think it was a disappointment.”

It widened a chasm that had been developing since the success of “Sister Christian,” a song which painted Night Ranger as a ballad band. “They didn’t let us be a rock band for the last two records that MCA was involved in,” Keagy laughs. “I think that was a disappointment for us, that we couldn’t call our own shots at that point. We were just part of the machine and we just felt let down. Because we wanted to release 'Big Life' [as a single]. We wanted to come out of the gate with fire and guns and everything.”

Fitzgerald exited during the early moments in the creative cycle for their next album, 1988’s Man in Motion , which was produced by Keith Olsen. The remaining members decided to be bold. “We thought we were being hot shit. We turned the record in without a ballad,” Keagy says. “They laughed and said, ‘Yeah, right . A Night Ranger record without a ballad. Do you think we want to release it without a ballad?’ They just held our feet to the fire.”

“Restless Kind,” a Keagy-sung ballad, was added to the album and while it was positively received by the label, who expressed excitement about the track, it went unused as a single. After touring for the album wrapped, the members of Night Ranger went their separate ways and moved on to other projects. Keagy and Gillis moved forward and eventually recorded an album under the Night Ranger banner, 1995's  Feeding Off The Mojo .

Blades, meanwhile, got a certain last laugh with “ High Enough ,” his first hit single with Damn Yankees. “Night Ranger, right after 'Sister Christian,' MCA would only allow us to release ballads from that point on,” he explained in 2015. "It was very much a struggle in that context, but it was also a vindication for me, because [Night Ranger’s] record company and producer at that point, wouldn't allow me to sing a ballad.”

“I said, ‘I can sing a ballad,’ and they said, ‘No you can't. You sing the rockers. Kelly sings the ballads. That's how it works. That's the formula,’" he continued. “I was like, ‘Fuck the formula, let's just do this! Let's try it differently this time!’ And they said, ‘No you can't do it.’ So it was a nice vindication for me that I can have a huge smash hit with me singing a ballad.”

Ultimately, the bassist/vocalist wishes they could have had some time away before making Big Life . “I think at that stage of the game, we were just like hamsters in a cage, just going round and round and round and round,” he said in 2017. “I feel like if I would have taken some time and sat back, I could have written songs that were more meaningful to me.”

“Hence, they would have been more meaningful to the audience and stuff like that,” he concluded. “That’s not to say that it wasn’t a good album, but I think it could have been so much better.”

Happily, Night Ranger regrouped with the band's classic lineup beginning in 1996 and now makes music on its own terms. The group has released seven albums to date since the reunion, including 2021's ATBPO , and continue to tour regularly.

Night Ranger

Heavy hitting rock legends, Night Ranger recently released a live album titled, 40 Years and a Night with Contemporary Youth Orchestra and it is available on CD/DVD, Vinyl, Blu-ray, and digitally across all streaming platforms. Filmed live at the Key Bank State Theatre in Cleveland, this special event finds band members Jack Blades, Kelly Keagy, Brad Gillis, Eric Levy, and Keri Kelli taking the stage for a one-of-a-kind set joined by Cleveland’s acclaimed Contemporary Youth Orchestra—an impressive outfit that boasts more than 80 talented student musicians between the ages of 12 and 18, who represent more than 40 schools in Ohio and who have previously performed alongside fellow rock legends such as Jefferson Starship, STYX, Pat Benatar, Kenny Loggins, and more.

The historic collaboration with CYO marks the first time ever that Night Ranger has performed with a live symphonic orchestra, providing a unique and soaring backdrop to signature classics such as “Sister Christian,” “(You Can Still) Rock In America,” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” among many others. The live concert event was also turned into a two-part special for AXS TV in fall of 2023. In addition to all this, Night Ranger is also on the road continuing the celebration of their landmark 40TH Anniversary, and will continue to tour across the country throughout 2024.

Having sold over 17 Million albums worldwide, performed across more than 4000 stages, and captivated a radio audience that exceeds 1 Billion, Night Ranger has both epitomized and transcended the arena rock sound and style well beyond that era. The band continue to grow their ever-evolving fan-base and they are proof that powerful songs alongside, incredibly talented musicians is the perfect formula for continued success.

Night Ranger have earned widespread recognition that includes both multi-platinum and gold album status all while leaving their indelible mark on the music industry with a long list of best-selling albums (Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, 7 Wishes, Big Life and Man In Motion). Their popularity is fueled by an impressive number of instantly recognizable hit singles and signature album tracks. Over the years, the band’s music has made notable contributions to and been featured in many different areas of global media and pop culture. Night Ranger was one of the first big “video” bands on MTV, with over ten #1 hit videos. Their songs can be heard in TV Shows like, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, American Dad, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks & Recreation. The band have also had music featured in video games such as, Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Grand Theft Auto, plus hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, the Oscar-Nominated film Boogie Nights, and other feature films such as Friday the 13th, Teachers, Sixteen Candles, and The Secret of My Success. Most recently the band’s classic hit “Sister Christian” can be heard in a Dr. Pepper commercial. They can also be heard throughout JBL’s “Hear The Truth” brand campaign.

Night Ranger is Jack Blades (bass, vocals), Kelly Keagy (drums, vocals), Brad Gillis (lead & rhythm guitars), Eric Levy (keyboards) and Keri Kelli (lead & rhythm guitars).

Event Details

Heavy hitting rock legends, Night Ranger are set to release their 12th studio album, "ATBPO” (which stands for And The Band Played On), an ode to making music during the covid era. The album will be released on August 6, 2021 via Frontiers Music Srl on CD, Color Vinyl (a variety of limited edition versions), and Digital. The band began writing the album in early 2020, amid the rise of the global pandemic. After narrowing down the song selection and tightening them up to their well-known rock ‘n roll sound, the band hit the studio, although separately, due to the times we are in. Throughout ATBPO we hear Night Ranger continuing their hot streak that kicked off with 2011's "Somewhere In California". Ten years on, and two highly acclaimed albums later, "High Road" and "Don't Let Up", the band's latest studio work shows them still burning with that high octane hard rock energy. Night Ranger has always had a knack for killer melodies, intricate instrumentation, and captivating lyrics; ATBPO delivers all of that and more.

Having sold over 17 Million albums worldwide, performed across more than 4000 stages, and captivated a radio audience that exceeds 1 Billion, Night Ranger has both epitomized and transcended the arena rock sound and style well beyond that era. With multiple songs having a significant impact on popular culture, Night Ranger continue to grow their ever-evolving fan-base. The band is proof that powerful songs alongside, incredibly talented musicians is the perfect formula for continued success.

Night Ranger have earned widespread recognition that includes both multi-platinum and gold album status all while leaving their indelible mark on the music industry with a long list of best-selling albums (Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, 7 Wishes, Big Life and Man In Motion). Their popularity is fueled by an impressive number of instantly recognizable hit singles and signature album tracks, including legendary titles such as "Sister Christian", "Don't Tell Me You Love Me", "When You Close YourEyes", the anthemic "(You Can Still) Rock In America", alongwith "Sentimental Street", "Goodbye", "Sing Me Away", and "Four in the Morning".

Over the years, the band's music has made notable contributions to and been featured in many different areas of global media and pop culture. Night Ranger was one of the first big "video" bands on MTV, with over ten #1 hit videos.
