Metal Gear Solid 5: How to Recruit D-Dog and Quiet, Speechless and Cry Havoc Trophies

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a huge step forward for the Metal Gear series. This time around players can enter the field with various “buddies” which will help make the missions move along smoother. Here's a quick guide to help you unlock those optional companions.

Josh Hawkins

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain players can equip various “buddy” members to follow Big Boss into battle. This guide will walk you through how to recruit Diamond Dog (also know as D.D., or D-Dog), as well as how to recruit female solider, Quiet. Recruiting Quiet  and D-Dog will earn players the Speechless and Cry Havoc achievements.

Recruit D-Dog – Cry Havoc Trophy

111 visit quiet

You won’t have to go far to recruit D-Dog, in fact, it only takes making it to the start of the game’s fourth playable mission to find the little one-eyed pup. Once you load into Mission 4, you should spot the little pup hanging around the Landing Zone. Use your Fulton Device to extract him back to Motherbase, and then continue the mission.

To make D-Dog available to deployment you’ll have to wait until he’s grown up and been trained. It should also be noted that you cannot get the Cry Havoc trophy until D-Dog is ready for deployment.

To make D-Dog grow up you’re going to need to continue playing through the game. You’ll see various cut scenes as the dog grows older, more well-trained, and stronger. Once you have beaten up to level 10 of the main game, D-Dog should be fully grownup, and deployable. You should also receive the trophy at this point. If for some reason he isn’t deployable after Mission 10, simply head back into the field and complete another mission or two.

Recruit Quiet – Speechless Trophy

111 visit quiet

To recruit Quiet, MGSV’s female sniper-extraordinaire you’re going to have to play a little further into the game. To recruit her you’ll have to make it to the end of Mission 11. Once you reach the ened of the mission, make sure you do not kill Quiet in the cut scene. If you kill her you’ll need to replay the mission and leave her alive.

Now continue playing until you reach the end of Mission 14 and unlock Side Op 111: Visit Quiet. To visit her you’ll need to head back to Mother Base and make your way to the medical platform. Once you arrive at the helipad, head down the stairs in front of it to find her waiting in her cell.

Now all you need to do is call the helicopter back to the pad so that you can leave the area. This will trigger a cut scene between Snake and Quiet. Once the cut scene has come to an end Quiet will be available as a deployable buddy to offer expert marksmanship in tough missions. Not only will you have another fantastic comrade to aid you in your battles, but you’ll also unlock the Speechless achievement and be one step closer to earning 100% completion on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

That wasn’t too hard, now was it?

Metal Gear Solid 5 - Lingua Franca: Afrikaans interpreter location, Viscount location

How to find the Afrikaans interpreter, rescue the prisoners, and locate the Viscount in our Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain walkthrough.

Welcome to Metal Gear Solid 5 - Lingua Franca , the 14th main story mission of the game, following on from Pitch Dark .

Lingua Franca Mission checklist:

  • Identified the Afrikaans interpreter
  • Identified the Viscount
  • Extracted the Viscount
  • Pinpointed the locations of the 4 prisoners from an intel file
  • Extracted 3 prisoners being held at Kiziba Camp
  • Extracted a materials container at Kiziba Camp
  • Listened to all 4 prisoners' interrogations

Cover image for YouTube video

Before you tackle your next mission, it's worth returning to Mother Base for an update on Quiet - you'll get a fun little cutscene when it's time to leave. Once you're back in the air, select 14-Lingua Franca from your mission menu, then pick the landing zone just south-west of Kiziba Camp. Keep DD as your buddy, set your drop time to 0600, then commence your mission.

Your primary goal this time around is to find and extract a British prisoner (known as the Viscount) from the nearby Kiziba Camp. However, you've a second objective too: locate the Afrikaans interpreter in the area. His job is to interrogate prisoners at the camp - so, if you find him, you'll be able to follow him straight to the Viscount. What's more, if you can get him back to Mother Base, his language skills will be invaluable during later challenges.

Lingua Franca: Locate the Afrikaans interpreter

Once your chopper arrives at the mission zone, disembark and immediately begin sprinting north-east across the grassland, heading toward the yellow objective marker. A little way on, you'll spot a cluster of huts in the distance - and you'll be alerted to the presence of hostiles.

Drop to a crouch and continue forward until you reach the small hill overlooking the main road near the watchtower. You'll immediately spot a group of guards nearby - two facing south and another escorting a prisoner toward them. Quickly whip out your binoculars and tag them all, zooming in on the face of the stationary guard in the green beret - this is the interpreter that you seek.

As Ocelot notes, you only need to extract the Viscount to complete the mission - but if you want to rescue any additional prisoners on your travels (such as the one you're currently looking at), you're more than welcome to. Before you do anything else, however, make a quick sweep of the area with your binoculars to scan for any remaining hostiles.

Rescue the optional prisoners

Next, turn your attention back to the guards and prisoner. They'll soon begin moving north-east along the main road. A short while after that, however, the group will separate - one guard will escort the prisoner along the dirt track leading east, while the interpreter and his friend will continue along the main path to the north-east.

Immediately close in on the guard and prisoner, sticking to the hill running alongside the dirt track. Stay low and use the tall grass as cover. As soon as you have a clear view of the solider, fire a tranquilliser at his head. Next, Fulton the prisoner and guard out of the area. You'll receive a smattering of intel regarding the Viscount - but not enough to be of use.

Next, locate the interpreter again as he continues his journey north-east. If you've worked quickly enough, he'll still be walking along the main road with his chum in tow. Note that the interpreter will appear as a red triangle in a yellow circle on your HUD. As soon as you have the interpreter in your sights, dash on over and begin tailing him, keeping close behind, and without being spotted of course.

Soon, as the two men near the bend in the road, they'll break into a sprint. Immediately pick up the pace to avoid losing them. As you near the concrete blocks lining the road ahead, look for the small covered area to the right, lying at the closest end of the large, nearby building. There's another guard stationed here, and a second prisoner sprawled on the floor.

Wait for the interpreter to approach the prisoner, then cautiously slip on over to their position. Note that you can hide behind the small corrugated fence surrounding the area without fear of discovery. Shortly, the soldiers will begin interrogating their captive. Eventually, once the sequence ends, the interpreter will hop in a nearby jeep and drive back along the road to the south-west.

Quickly bring down the lone guard in the area, then Fulton him - and the prisoner at his feet - back to Mother Base. That just leaves one optional hostage to go.

In order to liberate the final optional prisoner, you'll need to move quickly. Locate the interpreter again (via the pulsating yellow circle on your HUD), and sprint back along the main road leading south-west. Once you reach the building on the right-hand-side, stop and immediately turn south-east - the interpreter should be directly ahead, albeit some way off in the distance.

Sprint forward over the rocks (keeping watch for any hostiles in the area), and come to a halt once the ramshackle enemy camp - circling a large body of water - slides into view. Your target should be stationed in the main building beneath the windmill on the far side of the water.

Before continuing, break out your binoculars and scan the area for hostiles. Next, start journeying counter-clockwise around the camp's perimeter, staying low to avoid detection. Keeping winding around until you reach the southern side of the windmill you noted earlier, and stop close to the cages and tarpaulin situated nearby.

If you've moved with sufficient haste, the prisoner in this area should still be alive - lying near the cages with a guard close by. Quickly position yourself on the incline overlooking the tarpaulin (it's close to a truck with a comms dish on its roof) and eliminate the guard. Note that you can fire a tranquilliser shot at his exposed legs to bring him down quickly if his helmet's in the way. Once the guard is out for the count, Fulton him and the prisoner out of the area.

Need help with The Phantom Pain? Our Metal Gear Solid 5 guide and walkthrough explains how to complete every main story mission, and explains their many optional objectives. We also have lists of Blueprint locations , Tape locations , Key Item locations , how to unlock S Ranks and a Metal Gear Solid 5 Achievement and Trophy list.

Locate the interpreter and wait for his shift to end

With all three prisoners rescued, it's time to focus your attention on completing your main objective - locating and extracting the Viscount.

Thanks to the intel you've gathered so far, the Viscount's predicted field of movement should now be visible on your map - it's represented by a zig-zagging line to the north of your current position. You are, of course, free to investigate the area immediately. For the purposes of this walkthrough, we'll track the interpreter's movements to guarantee a successful rendezvous.

Start by locating the interpreter again - he should be somewhere toward the centre of the camp. You might need to do a bit of hunting to find him, however. Once the interpreter arrives at the large building beneath the windmill, he'll begin his daily guard patrol. When this happens, he'll continuously circle the camp, moving in a counter-clockwise direction until the sun sets.

There's nothing to do now but wait. Find a safe spot with a view of the main camp building (this is where the interpreter will depart from once his shift ends) and settle yourself in. Feel free to extract a few hostiles back to Mother Base if you start to get bored - and don't forget to grab Kajagoogoo's 'Too Shy' from the tape player in the green tent close to the comms truck.

Tail the interpreter and locate the Viscount

Once the sun sets finally sets and the interpreter makes his move, begin tailing him back along the dirt track. As usual, stay far enough behind him to avoid detection and watch out for guard patrols. When he reaches the main road running north-east (close to where the mission began), he'll follow it a short distance then dive into the cluster of buildings on the hillside to the right.

Stay on his tail and, eventually, you'll reach the building (located just to the north-east of the hilltop watchtower) where the Viscount's interrogation is due to take place. Wait for the interpreter to enter, then make your way round to the building's rear. Lie prone beneath the open window and wait. Before long, D-Dog will sniff out the Viscount as he's escorted along the path toward your position.

Sit tight a little longer and, as the Viscount approaches, peek out around the side of the building and use your binoculars to scan his face, confirming his identity. Next, return to your spot beneath the window. Once the Viscount enters the building, you'll need to deal with the interpreter and any additional guards inside. Either attempt to tranquillise the hostiles through the open window, or rap on the wall and draw your opponents out one by one.

To end the mission, Fulton the Viscount and the interpreter out of the area, then leg it away from the Hot Zone as quickly as possible. When the debrief is over, summon a chopper and return to the air. Before you move onto your next mission, however, there's one last bit of business to attend to.

Visit Quiet at Mother Base

Call up your iDroid and initiate a return to Mother Base, choosing the Medical Platform as your Landing Zone. Once you touch down, 111-Visit Quiet will be added to your Side Ops mission list. Select it, then follow the yellow objective marker down to Quiet's holding cell. Once the cutscene ends, Quiet will be added to your buddy roster which means that, from now on, she can accompany you out in the field. Needless to say, those sniping skills will come in handy!

MGS V: The Phantom Pain Buddy Unlocking and Abilities Guide

Here's how to unlock companions and buddies in MGS V.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain features a buddy system, allowing you to bring a companion with you into battle during missions. There's a small handful of buddies you can recruit, each of whom comes with their own unique abilities.

It can be difficult to decide which buddy to bring on missions, as their special abilities and defining characteristics can influence or accommodate your playstyle. With that in mind, we've put together this guide to help you decide how to use your companions.

D-Horse

111 visit quiet

D-Horse is your starter buddy. He'll offer you a means of transportation, at least until you find other, faster vehicles.

You'll be able to hang from his sides to stealthily make your way past enemies, because no one in the Metal Gear universe ever suspects a lone horse. You can also make him poop on command. When a vehicle drives into the poop, it'll spin and stop, and cause every passenger to pass out.

111 visit quiet

You'll find D-Dog as a puppy during story mission 4. He'll run towards you at the landing zone. Fulton extract him in the landing zone right where you depart the helicopter. Once you've completed the mission, return to mother base and you'll see a cutscene with the dog.

To get him to join you on missions, you'll need to complete Missions 7, 8, 9, 10 and and two of any other missions and you'll find that some time has passed and D-Dog is all grown up and available as a buddy.

D-Dog can mark enemies and captured friendlies on the radar. He can also distract enemy soldiers.

111 visit quiet

D-Walker is a mechanized walker that you can outfit for either combat or stealth. To unlock him, you'll need to complete a few missions in the game's African region. D-Walker uses a Tranq pistol as its basic weapon and can be summoned at any time during a mission. It can be equipped with better weapons, effectively turning it into a light tank. It can also fight in melee combat, picking up enemy soldiers and beating them up.

D-Walker has a radar that marks unseen enemies on your map.

111 visit quiet

To recruit Quiet, don't kill her in Mission 11. If you accidentally killed her, restart the mission.

Once done, take on Mission 14 and you'll unlock Side Op 111: Visit Quiet. Do so. Visit her at the medical platform. WHen you arrive at the helipad, go downstairs to find her cell. Once you call back the helicopter to leave the area, you'll see a cutscene with Quiet, who will join you on missions as a buddy.

As a sniper with augmented abilities, Quiet can turn invisible and hide from enemies. She can also scout areas and mark enemies. You can send her to designated spots on the map to provide you with sniper cover.

She can be instructed to shoot enemies, provide covering fire, and even fire at grenades—allowing you to take out enemy helicopters.

How to Get Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V

Do you want Quiet to join you as a buddy on MGSV missions? To recruit Quiet, you'll just need to defeat her—easier said than done, of course! Without the right equipment and, you’re more than likely to end up a sitting duck in her rifle’s telescopic sights. This wikiHow article will show you where to find Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V, and how to get her to join you.

Preparing for the Boss Fight

Step 1 Develop a Sniper Rifle.

  • Either D-Horse or D-Dog will do fine as buddies for this part of the mission since they’ll have minimal impact on its completion (at least before and during the fight with Quiet).

Get Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V Step 3

Taking Down Quiet

Step 1 Figure out Quiet’s initial sniping position.

  • Don’t worry if you don’t see where she set up her next sniping spot. You can always go out in the open and wait for the white cloud that indicates the location of where she’s sniping.

Step 4 Play the cut scene but don’t pull the trigger.

  • 5 Extract Quiet using the chopper. Since you can’t use the Fulton Recovery System on Quiet, you’ll need to wait for a chopper sent by Ocelot to pick you up. Boarding the chopper together with Quiet will then trigger another set of cutscenes which culminate in Quiet getting detained at Mother Base.

Get Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V Step 8

Deploying Quiet as Your Buddy

Step 1 Go back to Mother Base for Side Op.

  • Bringing Quiet on missions will raise your bond with her and open up development for upgrades to her weapons.
  • One mission that you can farm to raise her bond level with you is Episode 3: A Hero’s Way. Have her take out the commander from a sniping point directly facing his house. Once the commander is eliminated, exit out of the mission zone by helicopter and redo the mission until her bond level gets high enough for you to develop the silenced Guilty Butterfly (extremely useful for non-lethal takedowns of bases and outposts).

'A Quiet Place: Day One' trailer reveals why Earth went silent after alien invasion (video)

Paramount dishes up a new extended look at its sci-fi prequel to 2018's 'A Quiet Place.'

The age-old proverb of "Silence is Golden" takes on an entirely new level of meaning in the context of filmmaker John Krasinski's "A Quiet Place" universe, as those persistent sound-sensitive alien beings are back for a chilling prequel story that just might explain just where in the cosmos they're from and why they originally dropped in on poor old planet Earth to terrorize and consume its inhabitants.

Paramount has recently served up a frightening new preview and key art poster for its upcoming sci-fi thriller, " A Quiet Place: Day One ,' which will be directed by Michael Sarnoski ("Pig") and based on a story conceived by Krasinski.

It features the Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years a Slave," "Us"), Joseph Quinn ("Stranger Things"), Alex Wolff, Denis O’Hare, and the always-great Djimon Hounsou ("Amistad," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Rebel Moon"), returning with his mysterious Man on the Island character last seen in "A Quiet Place: Part 2."

people run screaming through a busy city street as asteroids fall from overhead

Krasinski, of "The Office" fame, brought us the surprise smash of 2018 titled "A Quiet Place," and its successful 2021 follow-up, in which sci-fi horror fans witnessed the embattled Abbott family encountering more sightless otherworldly infiltrators that employed hypersonic hearing skills to track down their noisy meat-sack prey.

This second full trailer has already garnered more than ten million views on Paramount Pictures' official YouTube site alone for an impressive response! Feline lovers will be thrilled to see that over-used cliche of the classic pet rescue here, while flaming asteroids rain down on New York City to unleash a swarm of super-fast "Listener" extraterrestrials amid downtown rush hour traffic.

"The biggest thing for me was that the first two films very much circle around a family and these people that have established relationships," Sarnoski told Entertainment Weekly . "I wanted to explore a little more of what it would look like for strangers to have to go through the end of the world together."

Here Nyong'o and Quinn silently team up to try and survive the Demogorgon-like slaughter and formulate a daring plan to escape the city, something that involves a whole lot of careful maneuvering and silent hand signals. This harrowing peek at the latest installment in the "A Quiet Place" franchise appears to be another nerve-wracking entry in an original property that's taken in over $637 million globally.

Paramount Pictures' "A Quiet Place: Day One" arrives on June 28, 2024.

We're All Worried About the Cat in the New 'A Quiet Place: Day One' Trailer

The prequel hits theaters on June 28.

The Big Picture

  • A Quiet Place: Day One will show peak desperation in society due to the alien invasion.
  • The prequel will be told from a different filmmaker's perspective, with former director John Krasinski serving as producer.
  • Paramount Pictures is further expanding the franchise with A Quiet Place: Part III set to debut in 2025.

Even though we're just a little over two months away from the premiere of A Quiet Place: Day One , Paramount Pictures had been keeping a lot of footage of it under wraps, revealing only one trailer and a short teaser a couple of months back. Today, however, the studio finally released a new full-length trailer for the prequel that stars Lupita Nyong'o ( Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ) as one of the people that tries to survive the alien invasion that resulted in 2018's A Quiet Place . The premiere is slated for June 28.

One of the most interesting aspects of A Quiet Place: Day One is that we'll see a different approach to the franchise. Due to its timeline placement, we'll get to see society at peak desperation because initially no one will have any idea that the deadly aliens are guided by sounds. An even if people start figuring this out, it will take a long time until this information can be passed across the world so people can start protecting themselves and worrying about the noises they make.

The other difference in the approach of A Quiet Place: Day One is that we'll see the story told from a different filmmaker's perspective. The prequel is directed by Michael Sarnoski , who previously helmed the acclaimed Nicolas Cage ( Dream Scenario ) drama Pig . Even though John Krasinski ( The Office ) sat this one out, he still wrote the story for the prequel and served as producer. Aside from Nyong'o, the cast also features Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things ), Djimon Hounsou ( Rebel Moon ) and Alex Wolff ( Oppenheimer ).

Will There Be More 'A Quiet Place' Movies?

For now, it's pretty safe to say that Paramount Pictures is actively searching for ways to expand the A Quiet Place franchise. Aside from the prequel that premieres this year, the studio is working on A Quiet Place: Part III , which so far has a tentative 2025 release window . However, the lack of news from it might suggest that we'll eventually hear about delays. At the same time, Paramount might be holding off on revealing any information in order not to draw attention away from A Quiet Place: Day One .

In any case, it's unlikely that the franchise stops any time soon: So far, the first two installments have already raked in over $600 million at the box office, against a modest combined budget of roughly $78 million for both entries. As horror franchises go , this is certainly one of the most successful of recent years.

A Quiet Place: Day One premieres in theaters on June 28. You can watch the new trailer in the player above.
