Mottah Cambodia Travel

Mottah cambodia travel reviews.

Really good service in tourist 30 day extension visa. We had to pay in advance cash and leave passports their 1 week. She messaged when they were ready for pickup and kept our passports safe. USD 50 each. Open everyday. Communication via WhatsApp responsive with good English.

Visa problem? I recommend this Travel Agency here in Sihanoukville. Service is sure. You can trust this T. A. Price = little bit cheaper than others

So bad information service staff! I called on Friday to ask information and she asked me to wait for her call back, but she didn't call me back. On Saturday I called again, she talked too rude and seem be angry that I called and said it's weekend not available to check information for me. If you don't work on weekend why stated open everyday.

I and my friend used Mbus several times and are very pleased with the service. We will absolutely recommend this travellers.

Spricht sehr gut deutsch, ist sehr nett und hilfsbereit und hat super funktioniert (Visaverlängerung)

The best place ever in Sihanokville for any kind of travel and Visa service. Outstanding, 10 stars of 5.

The two ladies working in this agency are really nice and helpful! We had bad experience before with another travel agency, so we habe been so glad how easy and quick everything went. The price compared to others is top. So highly recommended!

The lady working there was so nice! We arrived yesterday at 1 pm in Sihanoukville (from Koh Rong) and wanted to go to Thailand/ Trat the same day. And she organized a perfect privat transport for us. We got picked up at 3 pm by a nice big car to the Thailand border and there another very nice guy drove us directly to the guesthouse in Trat so we were there at 9.30 pm. Thank you!

Best place to rent a bike, book a trip, or renew a visa. Good service, good quality, friendly staff.

In need of Visa extension, tickets of all sorts and others, Mottah is the place to go. They also speak English. Highly recommended.

Good service for visas, friendly and english speaking. Had my Cambodian visa extended and they arranged an multi entry Vietnamese passport for me as well.

The best information center in whole Cambodia. This friendly woman can help you. The most clever lady of the country. Can make your visa also.

Rented a motorbike, booked a ferry für Koh Rong. Returned twice for tyre repair (no extra charge). Passport need to be taken during rental, what meant no problem to me. They did a good job. I can recommend.

4- stars because I don't know what a five-star facility would offer that is not available here. They prepare my 12-month visas here for $290. Have use this facility now three times.

Driving/Motorcycling to Sihanoukville

It is a 230 km, 4-5 hour trip on Route #4. Most motorcyclists rent 250cc bikes for the trip. Leaving Phnom Penh, follow Airport Road south past the airport and out of town. At the well marked Route #3/#4 fork just past the airport (Chum Chao), bear right. National Route #4 to Sihanoukville is a toll road with toll booths located near the beginning, middle and end. The toll is nominal, less than $1 at each booth for most vehicles. Route #4 is a paved and smooth, fast, easy and a relatively dangerous. Speeding taxis and reckless lorries are the norm. Passing courtesy is rare. Slow down through villages, watch for errant cows and dogs and oblivious children on the road. If you ride, by all means wear a helmet and bear in mind that medical assistance and rescue is non-existent in the countryside. Stop for a refreshment break at one of the many road side restaurants just south of the Pich Nil pass near the half way point. At the top of the pass, there are dozens of spirits houses and shrines dedicated to Buddha and local deity Ya-Mao. It’s a good photo opportunity and they say it’s good luck to burn a few joss sticks, leave a small donation and a hand of bananas.

What you need to know before visiting Cambodia: health care, currency, and culture

Mar 26, 2022 • 7 min read

Couple at Siem Reap

From what to pack to being prepared for health and safety concerns, here's what you need to know ahead of a trip to Cambodia © Jim Purdum / Getty Images

Cambodia is considered one of the friendliest countries in Southeast Asia . Thanks to an unbreakable spirit and infectious optimism, the Khmers have prevailed. No visitor comes away without a measure of admiration and affection for the inhabitants of this enigmatic kingdom.

General health is more of an issue here than in many other parts of Southeast Asia, due to a lack of international-standard medical-treatment facilities, a prevalence of tropical diseases, and poor sanitation. Once you venture into rural areas you are on your own, although most provinces have a reasonable clinic for minor health problems.

Cambodia is generally a very safe country to visit, but occasional crimes and scams do happen so it is best to minimize the risks where possible. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning once again, this guide can help you plan the essentials for your trip.

Cambodia's use of currency can be confusing

Cambodia’s official currency is the riel (4000r = US$1). The US dollar is used as a parallel currency and accepted everywhere, although small change may arrive in riel. Just to confuse matters, in towns bordering Thailand Thai baht (B) is also accepted.

Get yourself a  krama  as soon as you arrive

Purchase a krama , a traditional Cambodian checked scarf, as soon as you arrive – it's a multipurpose travel towel that the locals use in a multitude of ways. The primary use is protection from the sun, dust, and wind, but you can also use it as a quick cover-up sarong-style, to towel yourself down after a dip in the pool, and as a makeshift pillow. Essentially the list is as long as your imagination and it takes up virtually no space in your backpack compared to the multiple equivalent products it dupes.

A temple appears golden in the sunlight. Several tourists are milling around the manicured grounds

Pack lightweight gear and casual clothes for Cambodia

Lightweight and loose-fitting clothes are the best plan in Cambodia, including cottons and linens to combat the humidity. Cambodia is not a particularly dressy place unless you're spending time at high-end bars and clubs in  Phnom Penh or Siem Reap , so smart clothes are rarely a necessity. If heading to the upland northeast in November to March, pack a warm top for the cool nights.

What to pack

  • Lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect the sun
  • Comfortable sandals or shoes
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Powerful sunscreen and long-lasting deodorant
  • Earplugs to block out the noise
  • Unlocked mobile phone for use with a Cambodian SIM card (roaming charges are very expensive, it’s worth buying a cheap SIM upon arrival)
  • A light raincoat if traveling in the wet season.

There is some important etiquette to keep in mind

Cambodian people are very gracious hosts, but there are some important spiritual and social conventions to observe.

Always be respectful at a Buddhist site

When visiting temples, cover up to the knees and elbows, and remove shoes and any head covering when entering temple buildings. Sit with your feet tucked behind you to avoid pointing them at Buddha images. It's also good to leave a small donation. Women should never touch a monk or his offering bowl – the Buddhist faith believes it is contrary to a monk's sacred vows to be in close proximity to a woman that isn't a relative.

Use the local greeting when meeting new people

Called the sompiah , the local greeting in Cambodia involves putting your hands together in a prayer-like manner. Use this when introduced to new Khmer friends. When beckoning someone over, always wave towards yourself with the palm down.

A woman is looking at a bracelet that's for sale on a marketstall table

Bargaining is expected in markets and for transportation

It's important to haggle in markets in Cambodia, otherwise, the stallholder may "shave your head" (local vernacular for "rip you off"). Negotiation is also the rule when arranging share taxis, pickups, and local transportation like tuk tuks if ordering in person and not via a ride-hailing app. The Khmers are not ruthless hagglers, so a persuasive smile and a little friendly quibbling are usually enough to get a price that's acceptable to both you and the seller.

It's important to dress modestly

Avoid wearing swimsuits or scant clothing around towns in Cambodia, even in beach destinations. Wear a sarong or krama to cover up.

Tipping is appreciated

Tipping is not essential but is commonplace in establishments catering to tourists such as hotels and restaurants, and it is standard practice to tip tour guides and drivers on organized tours.

Local health care in Cambodia is basic

Do not visit Cambodia without medical insurance. Hospitals are very basic in the provinces and anyone who has a serious injury or illness while in Cambodia may require emergency evacuation to Bangkok. If you fall seriously ill in Cambodia you should head to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, as these are the only places in the country with decent emergency treatment.

Pharmacies in the larger towns are remarkably well stocked and you don’t need a prescription to get your hands on anything from antibiotics to antimalarials.

When it comes to tap water, play it safe and avoid it where possible. Bottled water is widely available in Cambodia and many hotels and guesthouses have refill tanks. Ice is generally fine to use, as it is produced in bottled water factories around the country, a legacy of the French colonial period.

An empty sandy beach at night, lit by the lights from beachside bars.

Elephant rides are not recommended

Though not yet illegal in Cambodia, elephant rides have been repeatedly called out by animal welfare groups as cruel and painful for the animal – some private companies are finally rethinking the practice . Do your research to ensure any animal sanctuary you'd like to visit is ethical and prioritizes the welfare of the inhabitants.

Stay safe in Cambodia with these top tips

The most common crime is bag or mobile-phone snatching, usually perpetrated by thieves on motorcycles. Smartphones are a particular target, so avoid using your phone on the side of the street, especially at night. Walking or riding alone late at night is not ideal, as there have been several incidents of solo women travelers being assaulted in isolated areas, usually after dark.

Most scams are fairly harmless, involving a bit of commission here and there for local drivers. There have been one or two reports of police set-ups in Phnom Penh, involving planted drugs, but these seem very rare and usually involve business owners. Beware the Filipino blackjack scam – don't get involved in any gambling with seemingly friendly folks unless you want to part with plenty of cash.

There is quite a lot of fake medication floating about the region, so only buy prescription drugs from reliable pharmacies or clinics. Be very careful if being offered chemical drugs on the street in Cambodia, as not only are they illegal but may be laced with all sorts of dangerous toxic substances.

Due to the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in some rural areas, it is essential to stick to marked paths. Keep a close eye on small children in rural areas to make sure they don't stray and do not go off road if you're cycling.

Roads have improved massively in recent years, but conditions can vary widely from the dry to the wet season. Although motorcycles are a popular way to get around in Cambodia, do not attempt it if you're not an experienced driver. The tangled traffic in the big towns and cities is no place for a novice.

Run through this pre-departure checklist before you go

  • Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months or you won't be allowed into Cambodia
  • Arrange any recommended inoculations at a travel-health clinic
  • Purchase travel insurance with decent health coverage
  • Double-check to see if you need to arrange a visa before arrival

Your first time in Cambodia?

Before starting your trip there are some things I wish I would have known before going to Cambodia. (Click here to read it) It’s full of super useful information for your trip about the culture and the country.

1-Month Cambodia Itinerary

Cambodia map.

Day 1-3 Phnom Penh

wat ounalom phnom penh, golden pagoda, cambodia

In the capital of Cambodia, we will start our trip through this wonderful country. There are two main reasons to start our trip here. 1. Most flights are the cheapest when going to Phnom Penh. 2. Here, you can learn many things about the dark history of the country and I think it is great to know these things already from the beginning of your trip. Thie helps you to understand the locals and the culture better.

We entered Cambodia by bus coming from Ho Chi Minh City . Therefore, Phnom Penh was a suitable starting point for us as well.

In Phnom Penh, there is a lot to see. The Cambodian capital is full of wonderful temples and buildings.

You can find my Top 10 Things to do in Phnom Penh here .

Kep is a little town in the South of Cambodia which is famous for its crap market. It’s nice to have a little walk around here. But unfortunately, we can’t really recommend the beach. In general, a walk around was enough for us and we left again the same day to Kampot. If you want to stay a little bit longer, you can stay the night. There are several busses leaving daily to Kampot from here.

How to get around

You can either book your buses and public transport on-site or online in advance. You can find the best and most trustworthy option to book your tickets for Cambodia online by clicking here .

Day 5-8 Kampot

Bootstour kampot, Berg, Boote. Wolken

Kampot became my absolute favorite in Southeast Asia. We went there not expecting anything. Our plan was to stay one night and then move on to the beach. Little did we know that we would end up staying much longer.

Kampot is the perfect place to relax, take walks along the riverside, and have great day trips.

Bokor nationalpark wasserfall popokvil kambodscha

Not far from Kampot, you can find the Bako National Park. Here, you can find beautiful waterfalls, temples, and an abandoned French Casino. You can find my article about the Bokor National Park here .

I can just recommend you to visit Kampot. Click here to read my full article about Kampot .

Day 8- 16 Otres Beach, Sihanoukville, Koh Rong

otres beach sihanoukville Strand, Kambodscha

Did you know that Cambodia also offers amazing beaches? You can find them in the South of the country. Sihanoukville is probably the most popular beach destination in Cambodia. Anyway, if you aren’t looking for parties, you might be happier staying in the near Otres Beach area. (Around 7 km away from Sihanoukville). Here you can find a beach area way quieter and easier to relax in.

Koh Rong is an island accessible from Sihanoukville by boat. If you are looking for a place with fewer parties, you might want to stay on the smaller neighbor-island Koh Rong Samloem.

Day 17 Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh

Unfortunately, there is no direct route between Sihanoukville and Battambang/Siem Reap yet. That’s why you have to go back to Phnom Penh first in order to get to Battambang. However, the bus trip is long and exhausting and the ride can get quite shaky. That’s why we decided to have a stop-over in Phnom Penh for another night and relax a little before the long trip.

By the way, we realized that the estimated journey time was always much shorter than the actual trip. So better expect 1-2 hours more when taking a bus in Cambodia.

Day 18 Phnom Penh to Battambang

After having a good rest in Phnom Penh, your trip can go on. For the trip, it is nice to bring some snacks and water, but there are usually also breaks to grab some food in between.

Day 19-21 Battambang

Wat Damrey Sar, Battambang, Golden Pagoda, way underwater, rain, Cambodia

Battambang surprised us positively. Besides the popular bamboo train, there is a lot to see. Several temples as well as the bat cave that is located a little bit outside of town. It is worth it taking some time to also see the non-touristic temples of the city. You can find my whole article on Battambang here .

Day 22 By boat to Siem Reap

Tonle sap boot lilien wasser

Did you know that you can go from Battambang to Siem Reap by boat? Even though there also is a bus operating between the two important cities in Cambodia it might be a great experience to take the boat instead. (And this comes from someone that actually tries to avoid boats as much as possible) Your journey starts early in the morning. During this ride, you can not only see great landscapes but also are able to have a look at the floating villages. Going with this boat, you can actually have a look at the real-life  in the village. If you get there with a tourist tour from Siem Reap, they will bring you to shops with which they have contracts in order for you to buy stuff.

On the way, you will do a stop-over in one of the floating restaurants being able to have some lunch. If you want to know more about the boat tour from Battambang to Siem Reap click here to read my full article.

Day 23-29 Siem Reap & Angkor

East Mebon I Angkor I Siem Reap I Kambodscha

In Siem Reap, you will probably find more tourists than in the rest of Cambodia combined. The temples of Angkor are attracting thousands of tourists to come here every year.

Siem Reap was quite different from the rest of the country with its huge night market selling souvenirs, drinks, and food. You can find many bars and even clubs around.

One evening, we spent in a tuk-tuk that was used as a mini-bar. You could sit inside having a drink. When buying a drink, you could also choose your favorite song the be played via youtube. We really liked the idea. It was something truly unique to us.

Bayon Tempel I Angkor Thom I Angkor I Siem Reap I Kambodscha

The temples of Angkor are just a stone’s throw away from Siem Reap and an incredible highlight. We decided to go with the 3-day ticket. The great thing is that those days don’t necessarily have to be consecutive and therefore we were able to relax one day after each day we spent in Angkor. Thus, we had a lot of time to discover the area, relax, and work. And even more to enjoy the Khmer cuisine.

Get all information about Visiting Angkor and about all the main temples there in my Ultimate Angkor 3 Days Tour Guide here .

Day 30 Departure

And then there comes the day where you have to say Goodbye again. It’s unbelievable how fast one month can go by. With a backpack full of memories, you can go back home now. Either you can take a flight from Siem Reap or go back to Phnom Penh from here. For us, our journey let us to Koh Chang, Thailand from here.

Travel Insurance for Cambodia

When going to Cambodia (or any other destination), you should definitely have a travel Insurance. They might seem expensive at first glance, but you simply never know what is going to happen. We had to visit the hospital once in Cambodia and were super happy that we had insurance that completely covered us.

These days, the most popular travel insurance is World Nomads . There are two main reasons why it is so popular.

1. It is easy.  You exactly know what your insurance is going to cover and the consultation is simply great. There is always a contact person if you need advice.

2. It is affordable.  They say you shouldn’t be greedy when it comes to your health. But obviously, you don’t want to spend more on your insurance than necessary, ain’t I right?

Just insert your travel data into the field below and get your insurance price without any commitment. Or if you want to know more about World Nomads click here for all information.

Vietnam Visa in Cambodia: The Easy Way to Get 3-Months Tourist Visa for Vietnam

PROCESS TO GET VIETNAM VISA IN CAMBODIA WITH/WITHOUT AGENTS

By Katy Tadlock last updated on January 27, 2021

Sharing is caring!

With all the confusion about the tourist visa for Vietnam everywhere, the truth is it’s much easier to get than a lot of other visas. When I was in Cambodia, I decided to make use of the opportunity and get a Vietnam visa in Cambodia. One visit turned two, two to three and before you know, I had been living in Vietnam for 2 years. Vietnam is a beautiful country with lots to offer, especially for expats. And really cheap to live as well. So if you want to be there for longer, and you want to cross the land border, getting a tourist visa earlier is the only way to do it.

Now, when it comes to getting a tourist visa for Vietnam, there are two options. You can either get it by yourself in a consulate or you can use a travel agent to get one.  I have done both a lot of times, so I will explain the process for each.

What’s your visa status? 1. If you are planning to fly to Vietnam and stay for longer than 30 days, and you don’t have time to apply for a visa beforehand, you might opt for a tourist visa on arrival for Vietnam . 2. If you are not visa exempt and you plan to stay for 30 days, an e-Visa for Vietnam is the cheapest and fastest option if you are eligible. 3. If you are from a visa-restricted country such as India, Turkey, Sri Lanka or a country in Africa, you might need to submit more documents and pay more. This depends on your nationality.

Table of Contents

Option 1 : Apply Tourist Visa for Vietnam at a Consulate in Cambodia

Now the first time I needed this visa, I was in Sihanoukville in Cambodia. And my hotel was like 10 minutes from the consulate, so I decided to give it a try myself. Although the guys at the hotel told me they could do it for me for 5$ more, I was just a little wary of handing my passport to them. So I decided if it wouldn’t work out at the consulate, I will take their offer. And trust me, it was a walk in the park. I got my visa on the same day.

Tourist visa for Vietnam in Cambodia

Details of Vietnam Consulate in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

The consulate is just outside of downtown on Ekareach road. Every tuk-tuk driver knows where the consulate is, and a return trip should cost about $4-5. It’s better to agree on a return trip fare so that the driver can wait for you, because there are no tuk-tuks near the embassy. Address 310, Ekareach Boulevard, Khan Mittapheap Sihanoukville Telephone: +855-34- 934039 E-mail: [email protected]  Opening hours Monday – Friday Saturday 8 AM – 12 PM 8AM – 12 PM 2 PM – 4PM

Documents Required for Vietnam Tourist Visa

If you plan to apply it at a consulate, you will need the following documents:

  • Passport photo – 4 X 6 cm
  • Original Passport with 6 months validity
  • The Vietnam visa fees in cash

When you walk into the consulate, you will see a small door with a sign for visa applications. There you can get the application form. The form is very standard. You will have to fill in the information about the date of entry in Vietnam, accommodation details and some personal information. Keep in mind that the visa will be valid from the date you have mentioned, and you can’t enter Vietnam before that. Now simply hand over the form and your passport to the consular officer. The day I was there, there were like 5 or 6 more people, probably all travel agents waiting in the line. I joined the line. The officer asked me a few questions , mostly related to my plans and travel date and if I was sure that I wanted a 3-month single entry visa. Then I handed over the visa fees. After this, I waited around for a while, maybe 15 minutes or so. And then, I heard my name being shouted and picked up the passport with the visa. I double checked the dates to make sure of no funny business later on and left.

The Visa Project quick tip: Sometimes the Vietnamese consulate in Sihanoukville is busy and you might not get it the same day. So it’s safer to get there early morning and plan at least 1 more day, especially if it’s a 3-month Vietnam tourist visa. If you don’t get the visa the same day, make sure to save your receipt after the payment. The receipt should have your passport number and the amount you paid. You can go the next day and pick up.

Vietnam has 2 more consulates/embassies in Cambodia: Phnom Penh, Battambang. You can get a tourist visa for Vietnam there as well.

  • Embassy of Vietnam in Phnom Penh , Cambodia 436 Monivong Blvd, Phnom Penh T: 023 726 274
  • Consulate General of Vietnam in Battambang , Cambodia Road No. 03, Battambang T: 053 688 8867

  • 1-month SETV: $40
  • 1-month METV: $50
  • 3-month SETV: $60
  • 3-month METV: $75-80$

Vietnam visa processing time

Normally, the processing time is 1-2 working days for 1-month tourist visa for Vietnam. But for a 3-month visa, it might take longer. Oh, and by the way, the consulates are closed for all Cambodian and Vietnamese holidays. So you need to think about that as well.

Option 2: Get Vietnam Tourist Visa through a Travel Agent in Cambodia

Using a travel agent to get a tourist visa for Vietnam is very popular with the expats. I chose this one another time when I was in Seam Reap, as this time I was very short on time and a couple of friends were going apply through an agent. So we all decided to do it together. The funny thing is everyone is a travel agent in Cambodia, starting from grandmas to motorcycle store owners and hotel receptionist. So sometimes, it can be confusing and overwhelming. The good part is they only charge a little bit more than the embassies, and their rates are almost the same. If you are using an agent, there is no need to fill in a visa application form in this case. No need for passport pics either, although you can provide one for faster processing.

Here are some travel agents that are popular with expats. The prices can go up or down a little bit depending on many factors such as nationality. It cost me about $60 to get a 3 months SETV from Sopheak Na Travel and took me 3 days.

If you want to expedite the process and get the visa faster, you can provide your passport pics and pay up. Here are the prices.

Land borders are always chaotic, so expect little to no organization. As long as you have your required documents, there should be no issues. There are always agents and touts trying to collect money for “fast tracking” your visas.

You will see people scrambling around, people handing over their passports. There is simply no need for this. You have your visa already. Only speak to the government workers(normally in green suits) and do not give your passport to anyone else.

And if you are gonna fly, things would be much more organized at the airports.

Vietnam Visa for Indian Citizens in Cambodia

I have known Indians and citizens from some other countries like China or Sri Lanka getting a Vietnam tourist visa in Cambodia. However, they all applied through travel agents and had to pay a bit more than what I have mentioned above.

And of course, you might need to submit a few more documents. If you can’t get a Vietnam visa in Cambodia, try getting a Vietnam visa on arrival instead.

Have you tried getting a tourist visa for Vietnam in Cambodia or anywhere else?

If you have tried obtaining a Vietnam visa in Cambodia, let us know in the comments. If you have any tips about any other reliable travel agents, please suggest. If you like the article, please share.

In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
