I found a sweatshirt, capris and a cute workout top. All was 20% off too! Nice treat. It is a bit of a drive from the suburbs but worth it!"

Memphis International Airport Guide

Memphis International Airport

Few people know that Memphis International Airport (MEM) is the busiest cargo airport in North America and the second-busiest in the world. FedEx alone flies approximately 400 flights per day that deliver 180,000 packages. UPS is expanding its presence here; soon the company will have a campus so big it can sort almost 60,000 packages per hour.

But for human passengers, the airport is quite manageable. There are four runways that served around 4 million people in 2018. All the major airlines fly through the airport including American, Delta, Air Canada, Southwest, Frontier, and United. Vacation Airlines and Via Airlines also have a presence. While Memphis used to be a hub for Northwest Airlines and had many direct flights to destinations, many flights now have to connect through another airport.

MEM, Memphis, and Contact Information

  • Airport Code: MEM
  • Location: 2491 Winchester Rd, Memphis, TN 38116
  • Website: http://www.flymemphis.com/
  • Flight Tracker: http://www.flymemphis.com/#
  • Map: http://www.flymemphis.com/navigating-mem
  • Phone Number: (901) 922-8000
  • Email: [email protected]

Know Before You Go

The Memphis Airport is divided into three concourses A, B, and C. While you will check into your flight and go through security in your assigned concourse, all of them meet together after security. That means all the restaurants, bars, and shops are easily accessible for all.

The airport is usually calm, but it can get busy during peak times. After you check your baggage in (or if you are only carrying on possessions) feel free to head to the security station in a different concourse if yours has too long of a line.

MEM is friendly, safe, and offers a variety of amenities for different kinds of flyers. There is a family restroom and a pet relief area just after security in the B terminal. The airport has a team of volunteers named the Blue Suede Service who offer local knowledge and aviation expertise. If you have a question about where to find a certain souvenir or which baggage claim is yours look for the people in navy blue vests, white shirts, khaki pants or shorts, and clip boards.

Airport Parking

Memphis International Airport offers both short-term and long-term parking options in two covered facilities. The parking garages are well lit, and there is even a service for car trouble (The airport claims it jumpstarted more than 1,000 vehicles in 2018 and helped more than 1,500 travelers find their cars.) There are free luggage carts available by the elevator in each level of the garage. The airport has 134 accessible parking spaces. You may pay with cash, debit, or any major credit card.

  • Economy parking: $6 a day. It's free for under 30 minutes.
  • Short term parking (a slightly more convenient option): $24 a day
  • Long term parking: $15 a day.

Driving Directions

Memphis International Airport is located at 2491 Winchester Road, Suite 113, Memphis, TN 38116. It can be reached via I-240W. Take exit 23B for Airways Blvd S toward International Airport. From there you can follow the clear signs for the airport.

You may encounter some traffic at rush hour both in the morning and the evening commute, but even that is minimal compared to other cities.

Public Transportation and Taxis

There are bus services that will take you to the airport, but they aren't direct or widely used. Memphis has taxi companies. You should call ahead to make a reservation. The easiest option is to use Uber. Uber is widely accessed and used in the city.

Where to Eat and Drink

  • For a true Memphis feast, head to Neely's Interstate Bar-B-Que. This local BBQ joint has jump pork sandwiches, ribs, sausage, and more. It's near gate C7.
  • To try craft beer from around the South head to Blue Moon Tap Room located at C1. The food isn't bad either.
  • If you're traveling in the morning and want a sweet breakfast look no further than Cinnabon Baked to Go located at gate C14. This gooey Memphis favorite will make sure you start your day off right.
  • There is a Starbucks in every concourse to fulfill your coffee dreams and needs. The easiest one to find is outside Concourse B security - it's where all the terminals connect.
  • Also at the connector is Urban Market, a gourmet kiosk where you can get sandwiches, salads, and snacks to go. Many of these options are healthy.
  • If you want a top-tier loaded sandwich head to Lenny's Sub Shop near gate A23. They'll put everything you want on your sandwich from spicy peppers to six kinds of condiments.

Where to Shop

  • The best place to head for snacks, magazines, or a new book to read on the plane is River City News & Gifts. They also have an extensive collection of Memphis souvenirs and gifts if you forgot a present. There is one near A29, A23, C12, and just outside security checkpoint B where the terminals connect.
  • If golf is your love you're in luck; there is a PGA Tour Shop in the airport just outside security checkpoint B. You'll find clothes, accessories, and other products.
  • If you left your charger in the hotel room head to the BestBuy Express vending machine where you can buy a new one and other high-end electronics. It's located near the Delta Sky Lounge in C Connector.

Airport Lounges

The only lounge in the airport is the Delta Sky Lounge. Inside you'll find alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, snacks, wifi, and screens to watch television.

The lounge is adjacent to the B Security Checkpoint in the B/C Connector. You can get in if you're a business class travel or have a membership through Delta. When space is available the lounge accepts guests at the door as long as you have a Delta Airlines boarding pass. A single visit is US$59 per person.

Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

The airport has free Wifi. All you have to do is watch an ad, and you can browse online as long as you want. There are also outlets and charging stations scattered throughout the airport. Many seats have poles in the middle with outlets so you can charge all your appliances at once.

MEM Tips & Facts

  • Inside the airport is a historical marker commemorating the final flight of Dr. Martin Luther Jr. The civil rights leader arrived the morning of April 3, 1968 on Eastern Airlines Flight 381. Later that day he delivered his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" sermon.
  • MEM has an arts program so travelers can view local art during their time in the airport. There are one-hour performances by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, a rotating exhibit of local paintings in concourse connectors, and more. Check the schedule here .
  • MEM has a partnership with Memphis' NBA team, The Grizzlies. The airport regularly holds raffles so travelers can win tickets to see the action live.
  • The airport has a free lounge for active members of the U.S. Military and their family. It's located next to gate A27.
  • If you need some peace and quiet look no further than the meditation room.
  • There are also mother's nursing rooms in every concourse.

In the heart of midtown, near the arty Cooper-Young district, Fox + Cat has a sharp eye for statement accessories and sustainable fashion. Owner Katie Gore says her mission is to provide a safe space for people to express themselves through their clothes, so go big – there’s no judgement here. If you’re planning on attending Trolly Night, Memphis’s monthly street festival, this is a great place to find a daring new outfit.

2. Stock and Belle

From its store adjacent the National Civil Rights Museum, Stock and Belle sells clothes and homeware from Memphis’s brightest designers. Here, the city’s artistic essence can be felt (and purchased) in practically every locally sourced piece. It’s a one-stop shop for gift buying. Items are reasonably priced and capture the city’s creativity far more than an Elvis collectable ever could.

3. Bad Timing Vintage

Store, Shop

Named after a Bombay Bicycle Club track, Bad Timing is every bit as cool as you’d hope. Inside its midtown store, just across the street from the Crosstown Concourse, vintage tees sporting the TV shows, movies and bands you used to love hang on free-standing rails. Sneakerheads will adore their selection of retro runners and hard-to-find Nikes still in the box. Even if you don’t buy anything, Bad Timing is worth a visit – it’s like a museum dedicated to the things we’ve forgotten we adore.

Shop, Store

For a taste of old Memphis, head to the ramshackle vintage shop FOUND. Here you can riffle through charmingly loaded hanging rails, dancing through the fashion decades with the flick of a wrist. Forget going in with a plan – you never know what you might find. Instead, just see what catches your eye, and remember – Memphis is home to Elvis’s gyrating hips and Isaac Hayes’s gold-plated Cadillac, so perhaps big, bold and brash are best.

6. Mbabazi House of Style

Founded in 2005, Mbabazi House of Style honors Mbabazi Loy Rujumba, the mother of founder Grace Byeitima. She used to tell her daughter, “With the proper skills and hard work, you can succeed in life.” Well, it seems Grace took that sage advice on board. Now the House of Style is a true highlight in the heart of the Broad Avenue Arts District, offering beautiful clothing and homeware fashioned from gorgeous African fabrics.

7. Primas Bakery and Boutique

Liven up your day with a trip to Primas Bakery and Boutique. Bright, colorful and ever so inviting, the downtown store is actually two businesses under one roof. The hybrid outlet is owned by two cousins, Rachel and Angelique, who were eager to merge their twin loves: baked goods and fashion. RM Petit Cakes dishes out vibrant sweet treats, while Shop Mucho stocks colorful outfits with a focus on Latin designers.

Best Shopping in Memphis

Sally Walker Davies

LAST UPDATED BY Sally Walker Davies February 1, 2019

From all the shops and stores in a city, 10Best narrows the options to those places with the most appeal and the best offerings. We deliver a carefully vetted selection to let you explore Memphis shopping on your own. If time is really tight, though, and you don't have the leisure to look through all our offerings, we present our Best Shopping list for Memphis. Here, we distill the best businesses down to a special selection of ten. These places promise a stellar experience and a taste of the city that you just can't miss, and promises to take you all throughout town as you shop.

The South Main historic district is home to a number of local must-hits, including Saachi and Hoot and Louise. ust a few blocks north, inside the historic Peabody Hotel, you will find Lansky's , the clothiers that gave Elvis his fashion-forward reputation. Hit the Cooper Young area in Midtown for our must-shop decor fave, me and mrs jones , where you can also take workshops on creating fine finishes.

We've included two shopping centers on this list, too; Laurelwood and the Shops of Saddle Creek, located in East Memphis and Germantown, respectively.

Burke's Book Store

Burke's Book Store

Burke's is one of the country's oldest bookstores - and likely one of Memphis's oldest, continuously operating businesses, having opened in 1875. Most of its history was spent in one location in Midtown; the store moved in recent years to Cooper Young. Burke's provides book lovers with what has become a rarity these days - an independent bookstore experience. With fusty and musty old tomes, contemporary bestsellers, and just about everything in betwee, the store is a local favorite. Burke's also scores local, regional, and national authors for signings, so you never know who might show up - including John Grisham.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : We just love a great bookstore - especially one that carries new, used, and hard-to-find books - and Burke's is all that.

Sally's expert tip : Burke's is one of the rare CY stores open on Sundays.

Williams-Sonoma - Pottery Barn Clearance Outlet

Williams-Sonoma - Pottery Barn Clearance Outlet

The Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn outlets offer the chance to get all your favorite merchandise, as featured in the catalogs and stores, at discount prices. From current season furnishings at Pottery Barn to the highest quality name-brand kitchen equipment and accessories, there are always bargains to be had, especially on the Williams Sonoma side, where we always are on the lookout for the All-Clad sales - heaven! More than anything, we love picking up Christmas gifts here; we stock up on the kinds of gifts that are great for families, like mugs and gourmet hot cocoa mix, or pancake mix with themed pancake molds.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : It's our gifting go-to, all year long, but especially during the holidays, when we load up on small gifts.

Sally's expert tip : There's no shipping or delivery for the furniture or larger items, so be prepared to haul purchases away, immediately.

Palladio Antiques & Art

Palladio Antiques & Art

If we had loads of income - disposable or otherwise - Palladio is where we'd spend it. With an array of antiques and collectibles, and random vintage finds, Palladio offers some of the highest-end antiques in the city, as well as a fantastic collection of works from local and regional artists. This is not a particularly huge store, but it does offer a nice array of styles, so there's something for every taste arranged in individual booths for easy browsing. And even though this isn't a massive space, there are 75 different booths to browse, so plan your time accordingly. We are particularly drawn to the English antiques -oh, our kingdom for an original pub sign!

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Palladio is the finest antique store in town, and its sister stores just a few steps up the street for even more browsing.

Sally's expert tip : The store's cafe is open for lunch and the occasional dinner / happy hour.

Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid

Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid

It was the most anticipated opening of a store in Memphis, ever. The $190-million plus Bass Pro Shop at the Pyramid - former home to the NBA's Grizzlies - opened in late April welcoming 35,000 customers its first DAY. The massive retail space combines a giant-sized version of a Bass Pro shop with a a giant cypress wamp filled with fish and alligators, a 13-lane bowling alley, a 28-story freestanding glass elevator, a 120-room hotel that resembles a swanky lodge, an observation deck at the tip of the Pyramid (visit for a fee), and all manner of boats, ATVs, and more to explore.Oh, and a gun range, an archery range, a shooting gallery, and a hotel spa. So, let's just call it Disney for outdoorsy types. Or anyone who wants to marvel at the marriage of a pyramid and a hunting lodge. Weirdly, it just works.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : The Memphis version of Bass Pro may just be the most unusual shopping experience you have. Ever.

Sally's expert tip : It'll cost you $10 to ride that elevator to the summit of the Pyramid - but the feel is worth the ride, and the view.

A. Schwab Dry Goods Store

Located on historic Beale Street since 1876, this general store is a Memphis institution. Schwab's has changed hands over the years, but the employees and inventory seem to remain the same. The dusty and vast inventory includes everything from kitchen flatware to overalls and knick-knacks. Be sure to visit as you'll feel as if you have stepped back in time and are visiting the only store in a small town â€" and boys particularly love this place, as it is full of essentials like whoopee cushions and other staples of boy-toys. You need to pay the old-fashioned way, too â€" no credit cards accepted!

Recommended for Best Shopping because : A. Schwab's is simply an institution, and is the kind of spot where you will find exactly what you need to complete a costume.

Sally's expert tip : Hit A. Schwab's early on Saturdays - it can be a jungle after noon. And - it's cash and carry - no credit cards.

Shops of Saddle Creek

Shops of Saddle Creek

A loosely spread complex with three separate sections, Saddle Creek offers all the latest trendy, name-brand stores. And while we are more inclined to hit locally-owned stores, we love Saddle Creek for its open-air concept, walk-ability, and upscale selection of stores. Saddle Creek features Williams-Sonoma, kate spade, Anthropologie, Coach, and Janie and Jack; Lucky Brand, Vera Bradley, White House / Black Market, and JJill. Men can find something to wear at Banana Republic or J. Crew. There are a few restaurants scattered throughout the area (and others definitely within walking distance of the south side of the center). During the holiday season, local school choirs entertain shoppers.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Saddle Creek is full of upscale national retailers, and parking is a snap.

Sally's expert tip : In the fall and spring, and during Christmas, Saddle Creek is home to a local artists market if there's space available - an added bonus for shoppers.

Flashback

You never know what you'll find at the super-fun and super-funky Flashback,a vintage store that focuses on clothing, accessories and home decor - and that's what makes it so much fun. There's always a great selection of mid-century furniture and home decor, a great selection of women's dresses and finery, and plenty of wide lapels and skinny ties for men to peruse. But what we love the most - next to the amazing window displays - is the retro holiday decor. From grinning 1960's pumpkins to cheery light-up Frostys and Santas, Flashback always amazes during the holidays.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Flashback is the city's premier spot for exquisite vintage finds.

Sally's expert tip : During Elvis birthday and tribute weeks - January and August - be sure to swing by and check out the windows. Velvet Elvii abound!

Me & Mrs. Jones

Me & Mrs. Jones

The totally talented Stephanie Jones set up shop in Cooper-Young, and talented DIY-ers across the region are celebrating. Jones, who shudders at the use of the word 'faux', notes that fine finishes are what her artistry is all about. She teaches hands-on workshops in her studio, sells painted furniture, Annie Sloan chalk paint and Miss Mustardseed Milk Paint; she also sells brushes, books, custom stencils, interesting knobs, local travel guides, flea market finds and whatever else strikes her fancy. From canvas floor cloths to whimsical home decor, this is the spot to find that perfect little something, whether for yourself or as a gift. If you, like yours truly, doesn't have the ability or patience to paint, fear not - Jones and company always have the shop stocked with a number of finely painted furniture pieces from which to choose.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Jones offers one of the most welcoming stores in all of Memphis, and she's a design influencer.

Sally's expert tip : Mrs. Jones is available by appointment at other times.

novel

The local bookstore lives on - and lives on in splendorous existence at novel. Locals still call it Booksellers or Davis-Kidd, as the store was formerly known before it was bought out by the staff in order to ensure its survival. This is the kind of store where you can pick up a gift as well as a book - and we guarantee you can't stump the staff - they know everything. One corner of the store is dedicated to a charming bistro, and serves up a fantastic breakfast, lunch, or dinner with signature items including a bleu cheese-topped tomato soup, and scrumptious offerings from local and regional cookbooks.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : At novel, you can load up on books and gifts, pick up some cards and wrapping paper- - and call it good.

Sally's expert tip : novel has a great little bistro called Libro - a perfect spot to order a glass of wine and read your new novel.

Lansky at the Peabody

Lansky Brothers fashions are a part of Memphis history, and their upscale designer clothing stores are a local fixture. While musicians like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and B.B. King provided the sound of Memphis, Lansky Brothers provided their fashion sense. Most well known for Elvis's Hi-boy collars, peg-legged pants, and pink/black combinations, they have been bringing the funkiest and hottest looks to Memphis for more than 50 years. The shop is small yet well-stocked, and they even carry blue suede shoes (and they're quite stylish). They also know how to tie a bow tie, if you're staying at the Peabody and need a rescue. Even if the prices are out of your range, browsing the 2000-square-foot store inside the lobby of the Peabody is quite an experience.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : The Lanskys are as much an icon in Memphis as their most famous customer - and their service is second to none.

Sally's expert tip : The store sells an exclusive line of Elvis-themed clothing, including a cologne.
