6 Of The Loveliest And Most Serene City Centre Strolls Manchester Has To Offer

Getting out and about in Manchester this autumn doesn't have to mean travelling out of the city centre...

Emmeline Banks

With autumn knocking on the door nothing beats a good walk, whether romantic with a partner, a solitary activity or with friends and family. Although we have many destinations here in the North West where you can take in the greenery and fresh air far away from the city , the urban inner of Manchester has some beautiful places of its own to take a leisurely stroll. Here’s our round-up of convenient yet soothing city centre walks in Manchester for city-dwellers and urbanites.

1. Castlefield Viaduct

castlefield-viaduct-best-city-centre-walks-manchester

After closure for winter and a few new additions, Castlefield Viaduct sky park is back with gorgeous views of Manchester and the loveliest flowers and greenery planted all over. Using a huge part of Manchester’s industrial history , the sky park is housed within a disused part of the train viaduct that towers over the basin of canals below. Feel at one with the city’s history and take in the peace and quiet high above the hustle and bustle of town . The viaduct is open to walk in between 1pm – 4pm every day.

2. Rochdale Canal Towpath

rochdale-canal-ancoats-best-city-centre-walks-manchester

Pretty much any canal walk originating at Castlefield Basin will lend itself to a lovely stroll, but the Rochdale Canal Towpath allows a walk through much of the city centre, popping up to see particular Manc sights. Weave your way undetected through the city, past Deansgate Locks and under Oxford Road , alongside Canal Street and towards Piccadilly basin , all the way to Ancoats and beyond. Exit via any of the countless bridges and locks along the way to create a loop or visit sights such as the Vimto statue or Alan Turing memorial, or carry straight on to your heart’s content. Whether you continue all the way to Rochdale and make a day of it, or turn off into New Islington Marina to sample any of the waterside spots, it’s a lovely fuss-free stroll.

3. Mayfield Park

mayfield-park-best-city-centre-walks-manchester

As the newest city centre park , Mayfield Park is beautifully landscaped and conveniently located near Piccadilly. Used by locals for kids’ entertainment, Parkruns and walks alike, Mayfield Park feels like a breath of fresh air even though it directly borders the city centre, and comes alive at the weekends when Mancs have the time to enjoy it.

4. Northern Quarter stroll

stevenson-square-northern-quarter-best-city-centre-walks-manchester

OK, yes, we all know the Northern Quarter inside out, but have you ever strolled through just for the sake of strolling through? Take in what’s changed over the years , the artistry behind the prevalent street art that covers the neighbourhood and absorb the liveliness that permeates from it at the weekend. You could really spend a whole day exploring the streets of the NQ, popping into local spots for brunch or coffee , visiting its independent shops and later grab a table for a well-earned drink and spot of food at the many bars and restaurants . Don’t overlook it – the NQ makes for one of the best city centre walks in Manchester!

5. Architectural city centre tour

architecture-cathedral-best-city-centre-walks-manchester

Manchester has some truly beautiful architecture , so perhaps let that decide your route for a stroll one day. Whether your favourite style is the Medieval and Gothic architecture of Manchester Cathedral and John Rylands Library , or the Art Deco of Gotham Hotel and Baroque of Manchester’s Albert Hall , you can create your own historical city centre tour of your favourite architectural treasures, especially if showing around someone not so in-the-know. Hopping between beautiful buildings will have you walking streets you don’t usually and appreciating city centre gems that often pass you by.

6. Salford Quays and MediaCity

media-city-best-city-centre-walks-manchester

Perhaps a city centre of its own, Salford Quays and nearby MediaCity provide a peaceful yet interesting walk for many locals. The Quays naturally offer a touch of serenity, with MediaCity having views over the water and so much to explore with the studios housed there including the BBC , ITV and Dock10 . MediaCity also has its very own urban garden in the middle, so you can hop straight off the tram and into the botanical paradise, surrounded by media innovation.

Discover Manchester with experienced, qualified guides from Manchester Guided Tours

Upcoming walking tours, looking ahead, meet the guides, denise sackett.

Her love of architecture, history and art combined when Denise became a tour guide.

Emma guides everything from Scuttlers to Blossoms, and created a unique and respectful tour of Southern Cemetery.

Don’t take our word for it!

Excellent ancoats food tour..

Having been on many similar tours, this one would be up there with the best experience we have had. John , our guide, was very friendly and had encyclopaedic knowledge of the foodie spots in the area and of the history and architecture you pass along the way. With regard to value for money we stopped in five places for a variety of interesting cuisines. There was plenty of food, we certainly didn’t leave hungry and indeed left with dessert to have later!

September 2021

Turn up at 11am, have the tour and then pay what you feel, be fair!

We pitched up at 11am, to find it was just us and Emma , our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. For the next hour and a half she gave us a superb rundown of the city centre, the industrial history and the cultural rise of Manchester. She picked out several hidden gems, gave us background and extra colour in an engaging manner. A great experience we would thoroughly recommend. The tours operate on a tip basis, I know that this is a bit of a problematic concept for we Brits, but it works well.

August 2021

Great tour of Manchester City Centre

Very enjoyable tour around Manchester city centre. Our guide Denise was very friendly, knowledgeable and easy to listen to. There were apparently a couple of inside visits that would normally have been included but couldn't because of Covid regulations but it didn't detract from the overall tour.

Fantastic tour, wonderful guide

Just had the most wonderful day with a group of friends, discovering Manchester and Salford. Alexandra was our guide and was just fabulous. Extremely knowledgeable, interesting and just so enthusiastic! We will be booking again very soon. Highly recommended.

A great introduction to Manchester

Enjoyed our tour with Suzanne who was an enthusiastic and informative guide on the social history of Manchester and the impressive buildings, particularly from Manchester's 19th Century boom.

On a wet morning, she was adept at finding the best spot to view the buildings and while keeping us out of the way of the worst downpours. I'd highly recommend the tour and the guide to any visitors.

August 2020

A fantastic tour of Angel Meadow and Ancoats ...

Did a fantastic tour of Angel Meadow and Ancoats today with Emma . Learned so much about that side of the city, how it has developed and evolved over the years, and how tough life was for its residents. There are so many clues to Manchester’s past still standing that I would never have noticed, or made sense of, before going on the tour. Emma speaks so passionately and knowledgeably about the city, and her tales of real life individuals, from all walks of life, really brought our history to life. Thanks so much Emma. Even the weather was glorious!

Great Walking Tour

Had a great walking tour from John Ryan . I found it really interesting. I've been to Manchester a few times, but have never noticed some of the things John pointed out to us on his tour. He's a really knowledgeable guide. I'll be looking at doing other waking tours in the future.

Interesting and humorous tour of the city centre

Absolutely brilliant. I've been to Manchester a million times, yet learned so much about the city on this walk. Nice, steady, slow paced wander around the city centre, led by a guide who obviously loves his adopted home town.

We couldn't enter buildings because of Covid, but it made no difference to our enjoyment of the tour.

September 2020

Great City Walk

This is an interesting, informative and gentle walk through the main city centre sites. Denise was very knowledgeable and friendly and gave us plenty of tips for additional things to see and do.

You’ll be many things, but disappointed isn’t one of them.

A dark-skied, rainy July day. In Manchester’s gargantuan Southern Cemetery. Inauspicious? Not a chance. Emma ’s passion for the sense of place and history, her indefatigable knowledge when faced with questions, and her patience allowing herself to be sidetracked by interesting tangential conversations, all add up to a grand day out. Treat your mind and soul to a breath of fresh Manchester air.

Ancoats & Little Italy tour

I did this 1 3/4 hr tour with the guide called Elizabeth Sibbering (Sibby) . It was excellent. We learnt a lot about the Mills and the communities who lived in Manchester in the 1800s. I would highly recommend this guide and the tours .

November 2019

A hidden gem

Fantastic walk with Emma . Learnt about Manchester’s history, economy, historic and new buildings, bee emblem and more. About two hours. Very interesting, and a great way to get oriented and learn about Manchester's hidden gems. Emma had a real energy about her passion for Manchester. Great way to spend 2 hours.

February 2020

Historic tour

We really enjoyed our tour with our local guide. She was most knowledgable about Manchester and took us to some great historic spots. Even after the tour was over she was happy to help us navigate Manchester and tell us directions. I would highly recommend this walking tour.

December 2019

A very good tour today with Pauline, learning about Manchester’s history, economy, historic and new buildings, bee emblem and more. About two hours. Very interesting, and a great way to get oriented in and learn about Manchester. Besides the “Discover Manchester” walk, this group of Blue and Green Badge guides offers many other themed walks.

January 2020

Ann was brilliant

This walking tour was fascinating and so interesting, made all the more so by the enthusiasm and knowledge of Ann our guide. She had so many anecdotes she shared and obviously loves her city! Highly recommended.

Another great afternoon

I went on the "Historic Pubs of Manchester" walk and really enjoyed it. Although I have been on these before, Peter O'Grady always varies the venues and has a constant supply of fasinating stories to share. I am always amazed by his knowledge of Manchester and intend to go on more walks as I learn something fresh on every one.

Absolutely entertaining and educational!

I am absolutely stunned how entertaining and educational this 2 hours walkabout tour is! All thanks to Eileen who took another visitor to Manchester and me around the Manchester City Centre. She was a gripping story teller who was able to hold our attention despite the traffic and pedestrians around us. Well worth the value I paid. Highly recommended to all visitors to Manchester who has a couple of hours to spare.

Northern Quarter Food Walk

We had the pleasure in taking the food walk around Manchester's Northern Quarter last night for my sister's Birthday. Our host John was great and informative, he took us to great places for good food and cocktails. I discovered loads about the Northern Quarter and places that I had never seen before.

I'm already planning another trip to the Northern Quarter to try out some more restaurants. Great night out had by all!

Emma’s ‘Scuttlers’ tour was highly enjoyable

Emma is extremely knowledgeable and a skilled story teller. As we walked along familiar streets and landmarks of Manchester & Salford, the tour brought alive the history of nineteenth century working class youth culture. We learnt a lot & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

50th Birthday Surprise

The tour was fantastic from start to finish. Emma is funny, engaging and full of local knowledge. I thought I knew my hometown but she gave us an education for sure! I loved that she made references to my friend's Irish heritage and the connections to our city. Enjoying a 'Cheeky Vimto' as we walked and having a sit down at some of our old drinking haunts was a wonderful trip down 'Memory Lane'. All in all, a fantastic way to spend the day with friends and family and I can't say enough good things about Emma.

Manchester is a brilliant city that, in normal years, attracts millions of visitors.

It's a city packed with world-class museums, libraries and art galleries, not to mention its brilliant restaurant and bar scene.

In normal years, people flock here from across the world to see live music, football and theatre, and take in the rest of the sights while they're here.

This is not a normal year though, and the doors to our cultural institutions are locked shut for the foreseeable future.

Luckily for us, many of those cultural institutions look pretty nice from the outside too, so a walk around the city centre gives you plenty to admire.

For those who live in the city centre and fancy a tourist day out, here's the ultimate walking route to take in the sights.

For everyone else, bookmark it for when travel restrictions are eased.

Have we missed anywhere? Let us know in the comments below .

Cathedral Gardens

manchester city centre tour

Starting off right near Manchester Victoria station, and one of our favourite examples of old meeting new.

The ultra-modern Urbis building - home to the National Football Museum and shaped like a glass dorsal fin - sits alongside the historic Chetham's Library and centuries-old Manchester Cathedral.

You can stand on the grass and take in all three, as well as the Corn Exchange building, in one spin.

St Ann's Square

manchester city centre tour

As you leave Cathedral Gardens and head towards New Cathedral Street, glance to your left and you'll see Shambles Square.

Its Tudor-style architecture is impressive, but it's even more impressive when you think that the buildings were dismantled and moved, piece by piece, after the IRA bomb destroyed their former surroundings.

On to St Ann's Square, once the home to thousands of flower memorials following the Manchester Arena Attack, and still home to the Grade I-listed St Ann's Church.

John Rylands Library

manchester city centre tour

Ducking out of St Ann's Square and onto Deansgate, you'll find yourself facing House of Fraser (though most still refer to this art deco landmark as Kendals).

Take a short walk down this busy street and you'll land outside the John Rylands Library.

The Grade I-listed neo-gothic building was designed to resemble a church, and its interiors have been used to film shows including Peaky Blinders and Darkest Hour.

You can't get inside in the current lockdown, but its exterior is incredible enough for now.

Manchester Town Hall

manchester city centre tour

Now on to perhaps the most familiar Manchester landmark of them all - the Manchester Town Hall.

It stands proudly at Albert Square and its magnificent clock tower can be seen for miles around.

The Town Hall is currently undergoing extensive renovations, so there's always a chance you'll be faced with some new scaffolding and hoardings when you visit, but you can still get an idea of its grandeur.

Now cut down Lloyd Street, where ornate foot bridges overhead join the Town Hall extension to the main building, like something out of a Harry Potter scene.

Manchester Central Library

manchester city centre tour

This is one of the most striking buildings in the whole city, a round domed building fronted with a columned portico, allegedly modelled on the Pantheon in Rome.

We love the views of the library in Spring, when purple blossom appears on the trees around it.

As you face the entrance, you'll see a lovely arched walkway to your right (which makes for a great photo), the striking Midland Hotel to your left, and you can nip into the modern foyer which has a ceiling that looks like molten metal too.

manchester city centre tour

Slightly retrace your steps and pass the Manchester Art Gallery, before turning towards Chinatown.

If you're lucky, you might be able to get a sweet bun from Ho's Bakery fresh out of the oven to fuel you for the next bit of the walk.

On Faulkner Street you'll find the traditional Paifang - or archway - that towers overhead.

Canal Street

manchester city centre tour

Chinatown and the Gay Village stand virtually side-by-side in the city centre, and although Canal Street doesn't boast much in the way of architectural wonder, it's still a significant part of the city's history.

You can stroll through Sackville Gardens and see the bronze Alan Turing statue sitting on his bench, and walk the cobbles that run alongside some of the world's best LGBTQ+ bars.

Dale Street

manchester city centre tour

Walk up towards Manchester Piccadilly - the London Road fire station will be on your right, which is worth a quick detour - and into the Northern Quarter now.

This part of the city centre is a popular filming location and often doubles for New York city.

Dale Street has featured in The Crown and Captain America, while nearby Mangle Street was the setting of Cillian Murphy's dramatic shoot-out scene in Peaky Blinders.

One of our favourite buildings in the Northern Quarter is 53 Dale Street, a narrow terracotta-tiled beauty with dark green windows.

There are plenty of relics of Manchester's industrial era in this part of town - just look up as you walk around the streets here.

Make your way past Afflecks - the city's world-famous shopping emporium that is covered with mosaic artworks - and turn right along Market Street.

There's not much to see here, beyond the odd busker, but one you pop out on Corporation Street you'll have three things to admire.

The Royal Exchange Theatre to your left, the modern glass skyway bridge crossing the street, and the ordinary-looking red post box that was the only thing to survive the IRA bombing.

You'll now be back near Exchange Square, where it's a short walk towards the Printworks to end up back at Cathedral Gardens where you started.

Manchester's Best City Centre Walks

You don't need to travel out of the city for some great walks...

The Rochdale Canal Stretching all the way from Sowerby Bridge to the Castlefield Basin, the Rochdale Canal is certainly makes for an interesting (if long) walk. Instead of messing about with it’s entire length, just pick it up in the city centre and enjoy a leisurely walk along it’s length as it passes by some of Manchester’s most iconic landmarks and venues.

Take note too of the bit next to the Hacienda, there’s a timeline of music events cut into the metal there, charting the rise and subsequent fall of Manchester’s most iconic and famous music venue. Oh, and don’t worry about ‘The Pusher’ – he doesn’t exist . Still be careful though.

manchester city centre tour

Northern Quarter Street Art There’s always a new bit of street art popping up somewhere in the Northern Quarter, and so taking a nice walk around the area to spot as many as you can makes for a great way to spend an afternoon.

Start off in Stevenson Square and make your way down the back streets of the old industrial warehouses and factories – you’re going to find A LOT of art on the walls let me tell you. At the end of it all – head down Thomas Street for a couple of well-earned pints and some food.

The Brewer’s Mile I don’t think you’ll disagree with me when I say that Manchester’s beer brewing scene is positively world-class, with an impressive range of brewers all setting up shop in the old industrial units dotted around the city in recent years.

So The Brewer’s Mile is the perfect walk for not just exploring the city’s industrial past and heritage, but also the chance to check out some of these breweries, chat to the brewers and (obviously) taste the freshest beers EVER as they come straight out of the tank.

Finest Day Out: “The Brewer’s Mile”

New Islington A newly renovated and much improved corner of the city, New Islington Marina is now a lovely bit of green space in Manchester, and is perfect for a little picnic and a few tinnies when the sun comes out.

It’s also a great spot for a bit of a walk, taking in the marina, the new developments and the historical parts of Ancoats along the way. Be sure to pop into Pollen for a post-walk Cruffin too.

Castlefield & Roman Ruins An inner city conservation area, Castlefield acts as a major canal hub, as well as being home to Manchester’s Roman Ruins and even the world’s first passenger railway on Liverpool Road inside the Science & Industry Museum.

The area makes for the perfect weekend or evening walk, with loads of history, some cracking bars and restaurants, the aforementioned (free) museum and the ruins of the old city – Mamucium – providing a bit of culture to it all.

We’re set to get our very own ‘ High Line ‘ too in the old railways above your head, which should hopefully be open by mid-2022.

The Traditional Pub Walk The perfect way to not just explore the city but also sample its many wet delights, our traditional ‘old man boozer’ pub crawl will take you to Manchester’s best old pubs – each one filled with mad characters and fizzy lagers.

Starting up on Rochdale Road at the Marble Arch, you’ll go all over the city and take in some of the best and most famous boozers along the way. It’s a great way to see the city, and an even better way of getting absolutely hammered.

The Best Manchester ‘Traditional Boozer’ Pub Crawl

manchester city centre tour

Medieval Quarter Featuring some of Manchester’s oldest buildings, the Medieval Quarter is perfect for a leisurely stroll through the city, and you might learn a few things along the way.

In this small corner of the city centre you’ll find Chetham’s Library , the oldest free public reference library in the English-speaking world, which was established back in 1653, as well as Manchester Cathedral and also Manchester’s oldest pub !

Take a walk around Cathedral Gardens (with the emos), pop into the National Football Museum and then pop into the Corn Exchange for a banging curry at Delhi House Café . There’s usually some form of event on in Cathedral Gardens too, with an ice rink this Christmas, alongside the Markets.

The Bridgewater Canal Starting things off in Castlefield, the Bridgewater Canal then stretches all the way to the Manchester Ship Canal and then joins the River Mersey and heads out to sea. It makes for a great walk too – which will take you all the way to MediaCityUK .

Along the way you’ll pass Man Utd’s ground – where you can pop in for a tour – as well as the historic Pomona Island, up-and-coming Ordsall and finally – Salford Quays . Once there, treat yourself to a sandwich from Bada Bing, a cocktail from Alchemist or a huge sushi platter at Lime Bar.

You can now go on a wine tour around Manchester city centre

Erm, yes please.

Daisy Jackson

We’ve had pub crawls, lockdown gin tin walks – and now there’s an organised wine tour you can do around Manchester.

A new series of events, simply titled Manchester Wine Tours, will whisk guests around town sampling some of the city’s very best bars and pubs.

The leisurely three-hour tours will showcase the best places to buy and drink wine around our city, with plenty of plonk to drink on the way round.

Launched by local food and drink writer and WSET-qualified wine expert Kelly Bishop, the Manchester Wine Tours will feature Manchester bars, restaurants, pubs and wine shops specially chosen by Kelly.

She’ll be picking places with an interesting range of bottles, and that are true local favourites.

These ‘posh pub crawls’ will give people the chance to try something new, learn a little about wine, and discover a new favourite boozer.

And Kelly is promising to keep them accessible to everyone from total wine beginners to long-term enthusiasts.

Each tour will cost £75 per person and will include a guided tour around Manchester city centre, six small glasses of wine and a series of wine-matched snacks at four different places.

Along the way, Kelly will also be on hand to point out local points of interest and things you might not already know about the city.

On this wine tasting ‘with legs’, guests will have the opportunity to learn about wine in a relaxed, fun, sociable and informal way.

Kelly Bishop said: “I started Manchester Wine Tours to celebrate the incredible wine offering in Manchester. Manchester is known for great restaurants and bars selling nationally celebrated craft beer and cocktails, but there is a really impressive wine scene here too.

“I’m passionate about wine and am really excited to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with locals and tourists alike.

“I want to show people that although this might be classed as a ‘high-end activity’ with really good quality wine and matching snacks, wine tasting definitely doesn’t have to be snobby or stuffy. I want it to appeal to anyone over 18 who is interested in wine and introduce them to some of my favourite wine spots in Manchester.”

Tours will start in October 2023 with the first events on Sunday 22 and Sunday 29 October (3pm-6pm). From November onwards, tours will be every Wednesday evening (7pm-10pm) and Sunday afternoon (3pm-6pm).

There will also be four special Christmas tours on 10, 13, 17 and 20 December. These are £100pp and will feature extra special wines and festive snacks.

Not one but two restaurants in Greater Manchester have been named on Time Out ‘s list of the 15 best restaurants in the UK.

The highly regarded lifestyle magazine is always pumping out these rankings across the board and with decades of pedigree behind them, it goes without saying that people still take their recommendations very seriously – ourselves included.

So, when we saw that a pair of local food spots were named on the most recent round-up , flying the flag for Manchester’s thriving culinary scene, we were obviously buzzing.

But what two places have they picked out?…

Erst – Ancoats

Erst Manchester best restaurants in the UK Time Out

In at number three on Time Out ‘s list of the best restaurants in Britain was the ever-impressive Erst , which we can confidently vouch for serving up some of the best food in the city centre just off Cutting Room Square for over half a decade now.

It’s one of those places that feels like it should have a Michelin star even if doesn’t have one right now, building a glowing reputation around two core pillars: incredible natural wine and stunning small plates.

Genuinely not that expensive considering the sheer level of quality on show, the magazine writers Leonie Cooper and Lucas Oakeley spotlight offerings such as the Cantabrian anchovies that are “excellently sourced and devilishly salty” as well as “inventive plates” like the mussels in escabeche with Marinda tomatoes, lardo and sourdough. Hard agree.

Where The Light Gets In – Stockport

where the light gets in menu

Second up for Greater Manchester is going to annoy all those ‘it’s always been Cheshire’ die-hards but we’ll absolutely be claiming this one; it’s Where The Light Gets In tucked away on Rostron Brow, right near Stockport ‘s historic market square.

Boasting a green star from Michelin and an incredible wine-pairing selection to compliment every course, this vegetable-driven dining experience is one of the very best we here The Manc Eats have ever enjoyed.

The menu changes every time you visit and the entire place feels like something special and bespoke. Time Out describes it as serving up “plates of food have nothing to hide and showcase the best ingredients from the farmers and fishermen that chef/owner Sam Buckley has spent years building an intimate relationship with”, summing it by adding, “Sustainability has never tasted so good”.

  • Manchester’s most in-demand pasta restaurant is opening a new location

The quirkiest pubs in Manchester, from wonky buildings to 7am pints to BYO chippy teas

  • Stretford Foodhall set to be replaced by cult favourite local pizza spot, Bakehouse32

We’re obviously biased but there are definitely a few more places around Greater Manchester that we’d throw in that for Time Out ‘s list but, who knows, maybe they’ll make it on there next year?

Either way, we’re just happy to celebrate two absolutely top-tier eateries in two very distinct parts of the region – it’s not all just city centre spots and it never will be.

Are there any amazing Manc restaurants that you think should have made the list?

Pubs are an integral part of British culture, and nowhere does them better than Manchester – in our humble opinion.

We’ve got tiny ones, giant ones, shiny ones and ancient ones.

There are some that serve seriously fancy gastropub food and others that serve a whole menu of crisps – and one that just encourages you to bring a chippy tea in with you.

There are real ale pubs, craft beer pubs, taprooms, and pubs that also do pretty good cocktails.

Whatever your brief is for the perfect boozer, Manchester will have somewhere that fits the bill.

We’ve rounded up some of Manchester’s quirkiest pubs that offer something a little… unexpected.

Temple Bar, Oxford Road

View this post on Instagram A post shared by THE MANC (@the.manc)

It is always, always that trip to the toilets that makes you realise you’ve tipped over into inebriated – staring at yourself in the mirrors above the sinks thinking ‘Oh, yup, too many pints’.

Here in Manchester, it can also be a trip to the toilet that gets you sozzled in the first place.

The Temple – or Temple of Convenience to give it its full name – is a tiny subterranean drinking den that in the Victorian era, was actually a public toilet.

It’s so narrow you can almost reach wall-to-wall if you stand with your arms outstretched.

But down here you’ll also find a great selection of bottled beers, a jukebox, and bags of charm.

100 Great Bridgewater Street, M1 5JW

The Victoria Tap, Manchester Victoria

Victoria Tap is open in Manchester now

What makes The Victoria Tap such a little gem? For one, it’s taken what was a literal bin store and turned it into a genuinely beautiful drinking den.

For two, as it’s inside the train station, it’s got a departures board – the twist being that it tells you how many pints you can drink before your train leaves.

And to be honest, we’d quite like to use pints as a unit for measuring time forever more.

The new craft beer bar has also built a small beer garden on its far side, where trams slide past within inches of the boundary wall.

Victoria train station, M3 1WY

The Marble Arch, Rochdale Road

Come, venture slightly beyond your comfort zone of the city centre and Ancoats – for just beyond you’ll find one of Manchester’s very best pubs.

The Marble Arch building has been here since 1888, and to this day is one of the most impressive historic pubs in the UK.

Its tiled walls, ornate ceilings and mosaic floors, not to mention its roaring fire and its beautiful wooden bar, are just part of the charm.

One of the strangest experiences when visiting The Marble Arch is the way the bar seems to draw you in to it.

It’s all thanks to its gently sloping floor – some say it’s this way to make rolling barrels easier, others say it’s for cleaning, but out favourite theory is that it’s to encourage inebriated customers to totter back to the bar for another round.

73 Rochdale Road, M4 4HY

The Seven Oaks, Chinatown

manchester city centre tour

By day, The Seven Oaks is a fairly normal pub – a lot of beer, a lot of sports, a lot of regulars.

But by night, it becomes the stuff of hospitality legend.

This is the pub for people who work in pubs, a place where the hospitality staff normally pouring drinks for everyone else can come and have their own after work – even if they happen to finish work at 4am.

Built for the people who work ‘the wrong 9-to-5’, if you’ve got proof of working in the hospitality industry, this Chinatown pub is the place to come for late night, or early morning, pints.

5 Nicholas Street, M1 4HL

Peveril of the Peak, Great Bridgewater Street

manchester city centre tour

You cannot miss the Peveril of the Peak.

Not only is it clad all over in ceramic tiles in vibrant shades of chartreuse and mint green, but it also stands alone at the fork in a road.

Manchester’s only detached pub has been here since the early 19th century, with a jumble of cosy rooms arranged around a central bar.

Inside, there are all the best sorts of pub trimmings, like a jukebox and a dart board.

It’s also had the same landlady for 51 years – Nancy Swanick, 90, is pretty legendary in her own right.

127 Great Bridgewater Street, M1 5JQ

Circus Tavern, Portland Street

manchester city centre tour

In stark contrast to the Peveril of the Peak, The Circus Tavern is very much a pub you can miss.

This tiny blink-and-you’ll-miss-it drinking den is home to the smallest bar in Europe.

Don’t expect a massive selection of beers here – there simply isn’t room.

It’s the weeniest pub in Manchester and also one of its oldest, dating back to 1840 (though the building was here even earlier).

Back in the day, it used to be a regular haunt of circus performers (hence the name), and Manchester United players, including George Best.

86 Portland Street, M1 4GX

The Old Wellington Inn, Exchange Square

The Old Wellington pub in Manchester is one of the city's quirkiest. Credit: The Manc Group

When you’re nursing your drink in the Old Wellington, you’re surrounded by masses of history.

The city centre pub is the oldest building of its kind in Manchester, dating all the way back to 1552.

Back in those days, the walls, floors and ceilings were all wonky, and the ceiling beams were so low that punters had to duck when they were walking around.

The pub might be ancient, but strangely, it hasn’t always been here on Exchange Square.

The medieval building actually used to be about 70 metres down the road, and had to be moved bit by bit and piece by piece after the IRA bomb in 1996.

Over the course of two years, both the Old Wellington and Sinclair’s Oyster bar were completely rebuilt in their new home here, where they still stand as two of Manchester’s most amazing pubs – and pull some of the city’s cheapest pints .

4 Cathedral Gates, M3 1SW

Mother Mac’s, Back Piccadilly

Mother Mac's, a historic pub in Manchester, has closed down

Back Piccadilly in the city centre isn’t exactly a wholesome location as things stand – there’s a lot of graffiti, rows of bins, the occasional rat, and (if you’re really unlucky) human faeces.

But if you travel back in time to 1976, things get significantly more bleak. We’re talking mass murder bleak.

A previous landlord of the Mother Mac’s pub turned and killed his wife, then his three children, then the pub’s cleaner, before setting the building ablaze and killing himself.

Mother Mac’s has now actually closed , with plans to turn it into a new pub called the Rat & Pigeon – which is fitting, given that’s mostly what will be walking past.

33 Back Piccadilly, M1 1HP

The Shakespeare, Fountain Street

manchester city centre tour

If you’re a fan of a ghost story, this is the pub for you.

The Shakespeare on Fountain Street – directly across the road from Primark – has had plenty of paranormal activity, if we believe the reports of its customers (who, admittedly, are likely to have been worse for wear).

Punters have reported seeing a flaming ghost at the top of the stairs, believed to be the spirit of a young girl who accidentally set herself alight while lighting candles at the inn.

It’s also said to be haunted by a former chef who hung himself here – you can apparently still see the rope marks on one of the ceiling beams.

Spooky past aside, The Shakespeare is a good-value pub with a menu of typical pub fare.

16 Fountain Street, M2 2AA

Briton’s Protection, Great Bridgewater Street

The Britons Protection. Credit: The Manc Group

Famed for its Jack Daniel’s collection , the Briton’s Protection draws in whiskey fans from across the globe.

Every year the owners travel to Tennessee to make bespoke casks – and they’ve even created a Jack Daniel’s-themed room in a snug behind the bar.

Home to some exceedingly rare bottles, including one with an unaired Sinatra concert recording hidden in a tie clip, collectors pay thousands for bottles from the Manchester casks.

That’s not all, though. The pub’s history dates back to the Peterloo massacre, attested to by a mural in its hallway.

Not entirely historically accurate, look closely and you’ll spot some of the rebels bear a striking resemblance to famous Manchester footballers.

Apparently, the previous owner was a bit of a fan.

Great Bridgewater Street

Cask, Liverpool Road

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cask EST.2003 (@cask_manchester)

This beautiful teal-fronted pub on Liverpool Road makes this list for a few reasons – the main one being that you can bring your chippy tea in with you.

Cask has become a firm favourite with Manchester beer-lovers in the two decades since it opened, boasting perhaps the most comprehensive selections in the city.

There are imports from across Europe, America and even further afield, plus a cracking selection of board games and a brilliant jukebox.

And yes, our favourite bit is nipping next door to The Fish Hut and bringing a chippy tea back to your table – you just have to agree to tidy up after yourself.

Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne (centre right) celebrates with Jack Grealish after scoring their fourth goal at Crystal Palace, his second goal of the game.

Pep Guardiola: “In the first half we did make mistakes but we made a comeback and Kevin de Bruyne won the game with his actions, his assists, his goals and everything,” the Manchester City boss tells TNT.

“We won the game with him. I didn’t know that [De Bruyne] enjoyed scoring goals more than assists but I keep pushing him to say we have to win games. He has won many games for us, no doubt. It was really good his performance.

“We will see which players we have available [for Real Madrid on Tuesday] because Josko [Gvardiol] had a little problem. We will see. Next one. We were unlucky to play early on after Aston Villa but now lucky we have time to recover before Real Madrid. We will try to give them a good game.”

Match report: Crystal Palace 2-4 Man City

Premier League: Kevin De Bruyne crowned a man-of-the-match performance with two fine strikes as Manchester City came from behind to beat their hosts at Selhurst Park. John Brewin reports from Selhurst Park …

Kevin De Bruyne: “I think [my performance] was good,” he tells TNT. “It’s a very untypical seasopn after being out for six months and coming back. Sometimes I feel good and sometimes I need a little bit of time for my body. I’ve tried to prepare myself the best way possible and try to do the job as good as possible.”

Rico Lewis: “To get a result like this is amazing,” the City defender tells TNT Sports. “The reason for Akanji coming on was because Josko [Gvardiol] was feeling a bit of a niggle and we don’t want to risk any injuries. Manuel brings so much quality to the side as well, coming inside from the left and getting on the ball.

“The main message [at half-time] was to keep on going and keep persisting because most of our games are going to be like this, where we control the game and they sit deep. You know the chances will come and the message has been to get into the box and that’s what we did today.”

Full-time: Crystal Palace 2-4 Manchester City

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeeeep! City were forced to come from behind but ran out comfortable winners in the end. They were far too good for a dogged Crystal Palace side who played quite well but simply couldn’t get on the ball for long periods of the game.

Manchester City's team players applaud their fans after their 4-2 win at Crystal Palace.

90+7 min: Bernardo Silva is bundled over by Joel Ward and City win a free-kick. The ball’s quickly played up the left for Grealish, who cuts inside and sends a shot from distance well wide of the far post. The final whistle is blown and Manchester City go level on points with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

90+5 min: Olise tussles with Akanjki out by the right touchline and the City defender comes out on top. City break upfield and play is stopped when Lerma goes to ground with a head injury after a challenge from Haaland.

90+4 min: Ahamada fouls Lewis and City win a free-kick inside their own half. There’ll be a minimum of seven extra minutes.

90+2 min: City substitution: Kevin De Bruyne, who scored two goals and has been generally outstanding this afternoon, makes way for Bernardo Silva.

89 min: Olise plays a long diagonal ball to Clyne and his cross into the City penalty area from the left is put out for a corner. City fail to clear it properly and Lerma takes a shot that Ortega saves comfortably, despite having his view impaired.

88 min: Olise charges forward but is tackled by Kovacic. The substitute wins the ball back and sends a cross into the City penalty area. Jeffrey Schlupp tries to get his head to the ball but it’s a mite too far away from him.

87 min: Their tails up, Palace get forward again but Michael Olise loses possession to Jack Grealish on the edge of the City penalty area.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 2-4 Man City (Edouard 86)

Palace get a look-in. Odsonne Edouard pokes home from close range at the near post after the ball was crossed his way by Jeffrey Schlupp.

Crystal Palace's Odsonne Edouard scores their second goal against Manchester City.

84 min: Palace can’t get a look-in as City’s players continue to run rings around them. It must be incredibly dispiriting for the players on the home side.

82 min: Palace substitution: Naouirou Ahamada on, Will Hughes off.

81 min: An error from John Stones allows Odsonne Edouard to shoot from seven yards. His effort is blocked by Ruben Dias. That was a good chance but Edouard didn’t get enough power behind his shot.

79 min: Munoz tries to break forward up the right but his low ball inside is intercepted.

77 min: Palace remain under siege, their players physically and mentally exhausted, and utterly unable to get any possession of the ball.

75 min: Palace triple-substitution: Michael Olise, Odsonne Edouard and Nathaniel Clyne on for Ayew, Mitchell and Mateta

74 min: City double-substitution: Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic on for Alvarez and Rodri.

72 min: Haaland pulls the ball across the Palace penalty area from the left but it’s cleared before anyone in a white shirt can get on the end of it.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-4 Man City (De Bruyne 70)

And another! Grealish plays the ball into the penalty area from the byline, Rodri tees up Kevin De Bruyne with a neat touch and he sends his second screamer of the afternoon into the back of the net.

Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne shoots with his left foot and scores their fourth goal at Crystal Palace.

69 min: De Bruyne sends a raking diagonal pass out to Rico Lewis on the right touchline, as City continue to play keep-ball.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-3 Man City (Haaland 67)

City extend their lead. Erling Haaland gets in front of Jefferson Lerma to stab the ball home from about six yards out after it was squared his way by Kevin De Bruyne. Jack Grealish was good in the build-up, slipping the Belgian into a little pocket of space in the penalty area with a neat pass.

Erling Haaland extends Manchester City’s lead from close range.

65 min: City continue to dominate possession, leaving Palace’s increasingly tired players chasing shadows.

64 min: Palace substitution: Jeffrey Schlupp comes on for Eberechi Eze.

63 min: Jean-Philippe Mateta is booked for treading on Rodri’s ankle with a mistimed lunge.

61 min: Bobb stands the ball up for Haaland, who is beaten in the air by Joachim Anderson.

59 min: De Bruyne overhits a cross from the left into the Palace penalty area and Bobb collects it out near the right touchline. The ball is ferried back to De Bruyne, who curls a shot wide. Palace are seriously under the cosh here, being stretched all over the pitch. They are struggling to get a touch of the ball.

58 min: Rodri floats the ball towards Haaland in the Palace penalty area but is unable to pick out the big Norwegian and the home side clears.

57 min: City pass and probe around the edge of the Palace penalty area but a poor delivery from Akanji sends the ball out of play for a goal-kick.

56 min: City take the corner and the ball is pulled back to Jack Grealish, who shoots high over the bar from distance.

53 min: Rico Lewis plays the ball through the centre into the Palace penalty area and Kevin De Bruyne tries to nod it into the path of Erling Haaland, who is unable to fire off a shot but wins a corner for City.

52 min: Munoz plays the ball across the face of the City penalty area from the right flank but is unable to pick out a teammate. City clear their lines.

51 min: City continue to dominate, hogging the ball as they ping it hither and yon, looking for another opening.

49 min: City didn’t have much joy down the left flank in the first half but after Pep’s change in personnel at half-time, it’s from that side of the pitch that their second goal came from.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-2 Man City (Lewis 47)

Man City take the lead! Jack Grealish crosses into the penalty area, the ball sits up nicely for Rico Lewis and he spanks it into the bottom corner from asbout 14 yards out.

Manchester City's Rico Lewis scores his side's second goal at Crystal Palace.

47 min: Mateta finds himself on the ball in the City penalty area without anyone up in support and tries to beat Stefan Ortega with a low shot towards the near post. Wide.

Second-half: Crystal Palace 1-1 Man City

46 min: Play resumes with Manchester City on the ball and Pep Guardiola has made a change. Manuel Akanji is on for Josko Gvardiol. It is still extremely windy at Selhurst Park.

Analysis: City have dominated possession but been largely restricted to pot shots from distance by a resolute and well organised Crystal Palace defence. A couple of extremely uncharacteristic errors from Rodri could have cost City dearly. He was responsible for giving the ball away when Jordan Ayew broke upfield and hit the bar, and it was his terrible backpass that almost allowed Mateta in to score a second for the home side. The City midfielder had Stefan Ortega to thank for saving his bacon on that occasion.

Half-time: Crystal Palace 1-1 Manchester City

Peep! It’s all square at the break, with Kevin De Bruyne having cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s fine opener with a wonderful shot from distance into the top corner. Palace’s players are applauded off by fans who are extremely happy with what they’ve seen from their team so far.

45+2 min: Gvardiol gets booked for a foul on Mateta near the centre-circle. Eze sends the free-kick towards the edge of the City area, where Anderson gets his head to the ball. It ends up in the hands of Stefan Ortega.

44 min: Palace appeal for a penalty when Eze goes to ground under a challenge from Gvardiol in the City penalty area. Referee Paul Tierney doesn’t give a spot-kick and his video assistant ref Stuart Attwell doesn’t get involved either.

42 min: Stefan Ortega saves City with a wonderful bit of nifty footwork after Rodri had sold him short with a backpass, oblivious to the presence of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was ready to pounce.

Manchester City's goalkeeper Stefan Ortega (centre) beats Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta with a nifty drag back.

39 min: Rico Lewis tries his luck from the edge of the area after receiving the ball in a pocket of space. His shot is straight at Dean Henderson, who saves comfortably.

Crystal Palace's keeper Dean Henderson saves from Manchester City's Rico Lewis.

37 min: Anderson plays the ball long and Mateta chases it. City win possession, Rodri gives it away again and Jordan Ayew gallops upfield with the ball at his feet. He clips the crossbar with his rising drive from distance.

36 min: Grealish gets on the ball again but is forced backwards by Daniel Munoz, who is doing a good job of marking the City left-winger.

34 min: De Bruyne tries to pick out Bobb on the byline with a neat little lofted pass but the winger is unable to keep the ball in play. Goal-kick for Palace.

33 min: City win another corner and take this one short. The ball finds it’s way to Julian Alvarez in a good position but he shoots well wide of the left upright.
