Knowsley Safari Park

Safari Drive

This took us about an hour to go around, there are a couple of lanes so you can queue up in your car to have a good look when there is an animal to see or you can go in the faster if you don't want to wait. Its a 5 mile drive where you go through Bactrian Camels, White Rhino, African Lions and Baboons. We were really lucky with the Camels, they decided to get up from their shelter and started to walk along the road right next to the cars. This was great and the girls really enjoyed watching them walk along side us. We decided to by pass the Baboons as were weren't sure about them damaging our car. This is easy to miss and you can still see them through the fencing. The lions were sleeping sadly but we did also get a good view of the Rhinos. You can go round as many times as you want too.

Knowsley Safari Park

Sea Lion Show

We parked our car and headed into the Knowsley Safari village. We went straight to the Sea Lion theatre as a show was about to begin. This was definitetly my favourite of the day. Two Sea Lions called Authur and Roger showed the audience their amazing skills for about 20minutes. They showed how they are different from seals and did mind blowing acts like balancing things on their nose and jumped up out of the water to hit a ball hanging from the ceiling. The Sea Lions looked like they really did enjoy the attention and the way the show was delivered by the animal trainer made it fun while being educational. There are 3-4 shows spread through the day.

Birds of Prey Show

With Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, Vultures, Kites & Owls. Watch them being fed and soring over your head in flying displays. On a few times a day, just turn up and get a seat to watch the fully immersive family friendly show.

Knowsley Safari Park

Amusement Rides

In centre there is a selection of about 12 fairground rides. These vary between 1-3 tokens per rider to go on. Or you can buy a wristband to have unlimited rides. These are a nice addition to the day and there are also a couple of small play areas near the rides too so you can easily break up the day with some playing between seeing all the animals. There is a Pirate Ship, Honey Pots, Swing Chairs and a rollercoaster called Rattlesnake!

On Foot Safari

Mischievous meerkats, graceful giraffes and an amazing Amur tiger trail! Sadly the tiger was fast asleep so we only saw him from a far. The Tiger Trail goes around the tiger compound with plenty of viewing areas. The Giraffes were gorgeous, we caught some of the giraffe talk and found out they were brothers and plenty of facts about them. It was great to see them walking about and pulling leaves from tall trees. There is also a woodland walk which leads you to a waterfall.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of places to refuel. You can choose to dine at the outdoor food court for loaded fries & delicious pizzas. There's the Oasis Restaurant where you can dine on delis, chill con carne, penne bolognese, rosemary focaccia & fish and chips. From the Coffee House there is hot & cold drinks and sweet treats. We took a picnic which we ate while going around the Car Safari but there are also lots of picnic benches.

We would have liked to have seen a few more animals on our visit, in particular the lions or tigers but the fact that the camels and Sea lions were so good it still made for a nice family day out.

Knowsley Safari

Knowsley Safari is an exciting day out for all animal-lovers – not just for kids. Who wouldn’t want to watch their car’s windscreen wipers being expertly deconstructed by some cheeky little baboons?

The safari drive is a real highlight of any visit. What’s more, entry to the park means you can go round as many times as you want.

The five-mile trip takes you past camels, white rhinos, ostriches, lions, yaks, deer, antelopes and baboons. Those who don’t want to risk the condition of their vehicle can take the car-friendly route. There is a baboon bus you can book on to for an extra six quid, so you can get up close to the animals without car calamities.

There’s plenty to see on foot too. The tiger trail, sea lions and mischievous meerkats are probably the biggest draws, but there are also birds of prey, giraffes and tapirs.

If the animals can’t hold your kid’s attention, there’s also a play area and a few amusements. There’s even a train if you can’t face walking all the way to the red river hogs. There are plenty of picnic tables dotted around should you wish to bring a packed lunch.

There is also a selection of amusement rides which include the Jungle Safari, Mini Pirate Ship, Carousel, Jungle Dodgems, Rattlesnake, Equatorial Express and many more! Animal encounters are also available so that families can get up close and personal with some impressive species such as a Rhino or even feed a Lion its breakfast.

There are three main ways to explore the site:

1. Foot safari: Explore the area on foot and witness sea lion displays, observe the big cats such as the tigers, visit the giraffes, meerkats and Iberian wolves to name a few! Children will also have access to the play areas and amusement rides. If families need a rest after all that exploring, they can take a rowing boat out on to Mizzy Lake.

2.Safari Drive: This 5 mile safari drive allows you to see everything from the cheeky baboons to the lion pride. Families can go around as many times as they wish.

3. Baboon Bus: For those of us not wanting to run the risk of the baboons taking a shine to their car, or visitors who just want to sit back and enjoy the Safari, the Baboon bus is the answer. Running every weekend and school holiday, the minibus drives right around the whole safari drive.

So for a perfect day out with kids in Merseyside, go on an adventure with a visit to Knowsley Safari Park.

Additional information: *Some attractions e.g. the Equatorial Express railway and the Baboon Bus can be converted to allow one wheelchair but please give 48 hours notice. * Don’t forget to buy your copy of the Safari Guidebook before setting off so you can be the expert and get the most out of your visit. *Some height restrictions apply to amusement rides.

Largest indoor theme park for Moscow

The Russian capital intends to open ‘Dream Island’ in 2018.

The Russian capital intends to open ‘Dream Island’ in 2018.

Generations of Muscovites have dreamed of having a Disneyland of their own. Former mayor Yury Luzhkov actually promised to build one in the Russian capital, but failed to find investors.

Sergei Sobyanin, the current mayor, has been lucky: he has managed to attract Regions Group, among the country’s largest real estate developers, which plans to invest at least $1.5 billion of its own and borrowed funds in the project.

The park, to be built on an allocated site of around 100 hectares in the Nagatinskaya Floodplain to the south of Moscow, will begin operating as early as 2018, the developers have said. The preparatory work is underway, and construction is due to begin in March.

Mickey is freezing

The main obstacle to building a licensed Disneyland was the climate. In Moscow, it is only possible for an open park to function during four months of the year. The authorities therefore chose the theme design for an indoor park (one-volume, 35-metre-tall building), which people can visit throughout the year.

The developers expect around four to six million visitors to the park annually. The authorities and the investors rely on the internal flow of tourists, but also hope that the park will lure foreign tourists, who spend no more than three or four days on average in Moscow, to stay longer in the capital city.

Visiting Cheburashka

The visual representation of Dream Island is reminiscent of ‘Cinderella’s Castle’ in Disneyland, but the project authorities and designers insist that it is not a stylization, but a completely original design. The architectural concept of the park has been developed by the British company Chapman Taylor, while the Italian company Land Milano was in charge of landscape design.

Leading criminals from Russian literature

"All castles have similarities, so such comparisons cannot be avoided," says Amiran Mutsoyev, a member of Regions' board of directors. "The principal difference is that Disneyland is aimed at children, while The (Dream) Island is designed for visitors of all ages. Our park will focus on the characters from Russian fairy tales and cartoons, for example Cheburashka, and Gena the Crocodile."

More than 60 percent of the space in the park will be dedicated to Russian cartoon characters, and the rest to international characters. The company has signed licensing agreements with three major studios, including DreamWorks Animation, on the use of their cartoon characters.

The thematic areas will have not only the characters, but also the scenery from famous cartoons. For example, a mild rainforest climate will be recreated in the area of dinosaurs, while the Snow Queen area will have the winter sky and snow.

In addition to thematic pavilions, the park will have about 40 rides, including a roller coaster with a vertical loop. The park will also have a sailing school, concert hall and a three-star, 410-room Accor hotel, as well as shops and restaurants.
