Looking for jobs in the travel industry? From entry-level positions at major airports around the world to travel advisors who plan awesome trips and vacations, we’re covering six of the coolest travel jobs.

Since Fora is a modern travel agency, you probably already know which job is our favorite. Want to know what it’s all about? Sign up to become a Fora Advisor .

Who works in the travel industry?

People who love travel, of course. Perhaps more than any other field, the travel industry pulls people of all types and backgrounds. By nature, jobs in the travel industry are filled with people from all corners of the globe.

(Sidenote: outside of the travel industry, what’s the best job for traveling? There are plenty of jobs where you travel that have little to do with the industry itself. Our guide breaks down some of the coolest choices.)

Virtually all jobs within travel are taking off

Now’s a great time to consider a career in travel and tourism . More people than ever are traveling around the world. Naturally, that means there are many opportunities to facilitate said travel.

Where are travel jobs booming?

Jobs within travel are outpacing just about every other profession across the United States. Travel destinations like New Orleans, Oahu and Las Vegas — just to name a few — have seen a dramatic increase in tourism since the pandemic ended (a.k.a. “ revenge travel ”). Likewise, travel jobs are springing up everywhere to take advantage of the excess opportunity. This is also coinciding with a renaissance of sorts for contemporary travel advisors ( ahem ).

What’s fueling this job growth?

It’s not exactly clear why travel is more prominent now than it was prior to the pandemic, but it’s not isolated to the United States. Many destinations across the world, including Portugal and Italy in Europe and Japan in Asia, have seen record numbers of travelers — and these trends are reciprocated on every continent.

Which sectors in the travel industry are experiencing the fastest job growth?

It varies by area, but broadly, hospitality (think hotels and other accommodations), tourism and travel advising are the three sectors that are seeing the most growth.

(BTW: we’re probably biased, but of the three, only travel agent careers offer the best all-around perks, from unlimited flexibility to uncapped earnings potential.

6 great jobs in the travel industry

Read on for a quick breakdown of great jobs in the travel industry, with a special focus on becoming a travel advisor .

(P.S. Looking for the best remote jobs for moms ? There may be some overlap between our two guides.)

1. Airport staff & flight attendants

Of all the travel industry jobs, airport staff are among the most critical since they facilitate most long-distance trips. Entry-level positions rarely require more than a high-school diploma, with pilots, advanced mechanics and some administrative staffers being the only major exceptions.

If you’re eager to explore yourself, flight attendants are often able to stay overnight in new cities before returning to their home airports.

The downside is that airport staff’s schedules are largely determined by the airlines, so if you’re looking for flexibility in the travel industry, you may want to consider a different path.

2. Hospitality professionals

From hotel staff to property managers, hospitality professionals provide travelers with lodgings and amenities during trips. Front-facing roles like concierge and customer service staff rarely do much traveling themselves, but as in any corporate business, higher-tier roles are often required to visit new places for conferences, expos and so on.

Most entry-level jobs in the travel industry’s hospitality sector offer comparable pay and requirements to any other entry-level job. However, the most reputable hospitality providers — such as the coolest hotels in Vegas or the best places to stay in Utah — tend to offer lucrative salaries in exchange for providing discerning travelers with white-glove service and elite comforts.

3. Cruise workers

Cruise-line jobs mirror roles in both the airline and hospitality fields since cruises are a mode of transportation, and most offer onboard accommodations.

For the right person, it can be an awesome experience to be ocean- or river-bound for up to months at a time. However, it’s worth noting that some of the lower positions are among the most grueling jobs in the travel industry, as workers tend to stay in tiny shared cabins and navigate strenuous schedules. Moreover, compensation depends heavily on the home country of the cruise line.

Esteemed positions — cruise directors, engineers, captains — often pay very well, but they also require considerable experience and education.

4. Travel writers & bloggers

Generally, travel writers get to blend their wordsmithing skills with their passion for exploration. It can be an extremely exciting job in the travel industry that regularly allows you to research and wax poetic about new destinations, modes of travel and more.

Of course, not all travel writers are able to travel themselves, and compensation can be all over the place. The best positions tend to be quite lucrative, while others may be better suited as part-time roles.

On another note, travel writing (or blogging) is one of the few jobs you can do remotely while traveling with virtually no drawbacks.

5. Tour guides & operators

Helping travelers better understand a destination you’re passionate about can be an extremely exciting and rewarding job in the travel industry. Is there a better way to share your pride in a location than to teach travelers about what makes it special?

Tour guides can highlight all sorts of things, too: beer tours in Brussels , haunted tours in New Orleans, luxury tours in Egypt …there’s really no limit to the topic or locale.

Oftentimes, minimal or no experience is required to become a tour guide. But the trade-off is that most tour operators are seasonal and / or tend to be part time.

6. Travel advisors (a.k.a. travel agents)

Okay, we’re completely biased, but we fully believe that travel planning is the best job in the travel industry.

What other choice here grants you unlimited flexibility — you can work full time or enjoy planning as a travel side hustle — no cap to your pay and allows you to share your passion? All of the options above touch on one or two of those points, but not all three.

What does a travel agent do exactly?

First and foremost, travel advisors book accommodations and travel experiences like tours, rental cars and more for their clients (check out the types of bookings you can make as a Fora Advisor ). Beyond accommodations, travel advisors act like any other type of advisor in their respective fields: they help their clients get the most out of their vacations or business trips with expert suggestions and custom itinerary building. It’s an enthralling position that allows people with an insatiable wanderlust to share their passion as a career or side gig.

(P.S. Curious about the different types of travel agent jobs ? See our guide.)

How does the career path of a travel advisor differ from the others?

We can’t speak for all travel advisors, but at Fora, our advisors enjoy career paths that fit their lifestyles. Some Fora Advisors plan travel full time, others only book the occasional trip for their friends, peers or family and others operate somewhere in between.

We’re big on flexibility and bigger on putting our advisors in control of how they conduct the scale of their business. Our guide to Fora travel advisor salaries offers a little more context, but depending on their commitment (which, again, they decide), Fora Advisors make anywhere from side-gig-worthy pay to six figures per year and beyond (read how much do travel agents make ).

While most jobs in the travel industry adhere to strict schedules and rules, remote travel agents at Fora work at their discretion. Even better, prior travel agent education or experience isn’t a requirement (we provide all the travel agent training you need).

Jobs in the travel industry: FAQs

Have more questions about jobs within travel? Here are some answers to the top FAQs.

How much can you expect to earn at a job within the travel industry? Which job within travel pays the best?

There’s no easy answer to this question. It’s safe to say that those holding executive positions across sectors in the travel industry tend to be among the top earners. However, the incomes of top earners in travel consultant jobs are surprisingly comparable, and some Fora Advisors earn north of six figures annually — just from travel agent commissions and planning fees.

As for which job in the travel industry pays the very best, there’s no one answer: pay varies widely, and is often dependent on things like seasonality, trends, the economy and the like.

What career will allow me to travel the most?

Interested in traveling the world while you work? Ironically, many jobs within travel are in-office positions. However, contemporary travel advisors — including Fora Advisors — have the freedom to work from anywhere in the world so long as they have an internet connection.

Which job within travel has the least education and experience requirements? How about skills requirements?

Most entry-level positions in the travel industry have limited education and experience requirements. More involved positions, such as hotel managers or tour operators, may require respective degrees.

If you’re looking for a position with limited (or no) education requirements, becoming a Fora Advisor may be the right choice for you (we don’t require prior travel agent education).

Are there special perks to being a travel advisor with Fora?

You bet: unlimited flexibility, comprehensive (and ongoing) training opportunities, marketing resources and an in-house booking platform that conveniently boosts your efficiency are just a few of the coolest perks we offer Fora Advisors. Of all the jobs within travel, few offer such a robust toolset.

Travel & Tourism set to Break All Records in 2024, reveals WTTC

job in tourism and travel

Global GDP impact predicted to exceed $11 trillion in 2024 Unprecedented job numbers expected in the sector

New York, U.S.: The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) is projecting a record-breaking year for Travel & Tourism in 2024, with the sector’s global economic contribution set to reach an all-time high of $11.1 trillion.  According to the global tourism body’s 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR), Travel & Tourism will contribute an additional $770BN over its previous record, stamping its authority as a global economic powerhouse, generating one in every 10 dollars worldwide. As the global sector soars past its pre-pandemic prosperity, WTTC expects 142 countries of 185 analysed will be outperforming previous national records. In partnership with Oxford Economic, WTTC’s latest EIR showcases a sector briming with opportunities, underpinning almost 348MN jobs globally. This represents an increase of more than 13.6MN jobs compared to its highest point in 2019. International visitor spending is expected to come within touching distance of the 2019 peak, to reach $1.89TN, while domestic tourists are forecast to spend more than in any year on record to hit $5.4TN. A look back on last year Despite economic uncertainties and geopolitical shake-ups, the Travel & Tourism sector is thriving. With an economic injection of nearly $10TN, the sector matched its pre-pandemic zenith, flexing its resilience and proving its critical role in the global economy. Representing 9.1% of global GDP at just over $9.9TN in 2023, Travel & Tourism’s financial footprint was the largest it’s been since the golden year of travel in 2019, trailing its peak by a mere 4%.  The sector also bolstered its workforce by an additional 27.4MN, propelling the total to nearly 330MN jobs worldwide. International spending increased by 33.1% to reach $1.63TN, underscoring a vibrant comeback story for many countries around the world, with domestic spending increasing by more than 18% to reach almost $5TN.  2023 set the stage, demonstrating the unwavering passion for travel, paving the way for a record-breaking year in 2024. This growth comes despite two of the world’s biggest tourism markets lagging in terms of international visitor spend, with both the U.S. and China seeing a far slower return of international tourist spend. Last year in the U.S., international visitor spending remained more than a quarter below the peak of 2019, while China’s visitor spend remained almost 60% down. Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Against the backdrop of uncertainty, the Travel & Tourism sector remains a global economic powerhouse. “This isn’t just about breaking records, we’re no longer talker about a recovery – this is a story of the sector back at its best after a difficult few years, providing a significant economic boost to countries around the world and supporting millions of jobs. “There’s a risk however, we need the U.S. and Chinese governments to support their national Travel & Tourism sectors. The U.S. and China will continue to suffer whilst other countries are seeing international visitors return much faster.” Travel & Tourism 10 years from now Looking ahead, WTTC is forecasting a promising future for the next decade, characterised by robust growth and unparalleled career opportunities.  By 2034, the sector will supercharge the global economy with a staggering $16TN, making up 11.4% of the entire economic landscape. This booming industry is also set to be a job creation juggernaut, providing employment for 449MN people worldwide. Nearly 12.2% of the workforce will be powering this vibrant sector, showcasing Travel & Tourism’s pivotal role in global employment. With more than three quarters of the countries analysed expected to exceed the high point of 2019, in terms of GDP contribution,  Travel & Tourism is on the brink of its most transformative era yet, promising prosperity, innovation, and connection on a scale we’ve yet to see. In a world of high-speed living and remote jobs, earning money anywhere is possible. Travel isn’t cheap. It costs a lot of money, and working in an office does not leave much time for leisure. If you are on vacation and have seen all there is to be seen, you may look for something else to pass the time.

Remote jobs don’t have to be boring. In fact, many of them are great options for earning free or discounted travel. You just have to know how to choose which of these travel jobs is right for you.

job in tourism and travel

1. Blogging

Blogging while traveling is a great way to earn some money. Your office is wherever your laptop is, so you are never tied down to one place. This can help you travel the world with just a laptop and a bit of data, which you can always find in local cafes or restaurants . It’s even better if you do travel writing, so you can combine firsthand experience with creative writing that helps others plan their travels.

<p><span>The rise of Mukbang videos, where people eat insane amounts of food while sometimes conversing with the camera, is weirdly intriguing to many and simultaneously perplexing. While it attracts massive audiences, the fascination with watching someone devour excessive quantities of food remains a mystery. Moreover, this trend raises concerns about promoting unhealthy eating habits and overindulgence.</span></p>

2. Vlogging

Similar to blogging, video blogging, also called “ vlogging ,” is a visual form of content. You can write blogs for your website but also work as a freelancer for other people’s websites. When it comes to vlogging, however, people usually vlog for their own channels. It takes more time to succeed but can also be more rewarding monetarily. All you need is a smartphone with a nice camera, or if you want to be fancy, a laptop with some video editing software like Adobe PremierePro or DaVinci Resolve.

<p>Interestingly, it seems like millennials have a better understanding of technology. Gen Z grew up with tech, but millennials have more experience with the inner workings, like troubleshooting a computer or building an HTML code. I would think the opposite would be true, but tech has become too easy for Gen Z in some ways.</p>

3. Video Commercials

This one is both fun and rewarding. If you have a smartphone with a decent camera and invest in an excellent DJI drone, you can earn some nice money on your travels. Combine this with an investment in a decent laptop and a video editing course, and you have a recipe for success. When I was on vacation in Corfu , I discovered an opportunity with their beautiful beachfront Tavernas. I packed my drone, visited a few of them on foot, and offered them my services. I scored two jobs for filming a video ad and one logo redesign job, which made me a nice profit for less than a full day of work.

4. Singing and Playing an Instrument

Singing or playing an instrument is another excellent way to earn some surprisingly good money. If you are a good singer and can play an instrument, you can always play in the city center or other popular spots. Many great talents have been discovered performing in public this way. You can also offer your skills to local restaurants or lounges if they are in need of live music or other entertainment.

<p>If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. <em>Pro tip</em>: You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.</p>

5. Haircuts for Tips

If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. Pro tip : You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.

<p><span>In a tabloid or on a gossip website, if a celebrity looks to be posing in a staged photo, they most certainly are. Stars view it as a cooperative effort that benefits all parties, and fans frequently aren’t aware that the “candid” photos were expertly staged before being made public.</span></p>

6. Exposure for Businesses

This travel job is for those with a well-developed online business. If you already have a travel blog , you can always ask restaurant owners, bar owners, hotels, and others who provide services in tourism if they would like to collaborate on a promotion on your website. The business will get exposure to your audience, and you can negotiate payment or exchanges for that promotion, like a one-night hotel stay or a free meal.

<p>This unique locale lets guests taste wine from three family-owned micro-wineries: Blacksmith Cellars, Sunset Cellars, and King Andrew Vineyard. Staff at the tasting room are wine producers and grape growers, providing expert knowledge on the local wines and the Suisun Valley wine region. The tasting list changes weekly. And guess what — you can bring picnics or snacks (but no outside drinks). Stop by La Barista Espresso for deli sandwiches on your way to the <a href="https://suisunvalleywinecoop.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Suisun Valley Wine Co-op</a>.</p><ul> <li><strong>Blacksmith Cellars:</strong> Founded in 2003, winemaker Matt Smith crafts complex wines, distinctive varietal-driven and blended wines.</li> <li><strong>Sunset Cellars:</strong> Starting in 1997 in the garage of the Inner Sunset neighborhood in <a href="https://wealthofgeeks.com/kid-friendly-things-to-do-in-san-francisco/">San Francisco</a>, Sunset Cellars has a minimalist winemaking style and respects the grower’s efforts in the vineyards.</li> <li><strong>King Andrew Vineyard:</strong> After growing grapes in their own vineyard, Roger King and his wife Carol brought their bottled wine from small lot production to the winery. The fresh and vibrant wines are bottled with limited intervention.</li> </ul><p>Reservations are not required, but they are recommended.</p>

7. Bartending

A good barista is always a much-needed part of the crew. If you know how to mix drinks or make a killer espresso, you can always offer your services to nightclubs or cafes and earn a decent wage, plus tips.

8. Temporary Tattoos or Hair Styling

Unlike the classic tattoo industry, where laws and regulations can tie up employment approval, temporary tattoos can be done anytime, anywhere, and do not fall under any laws and regulations. There is a low risk of infection with temporary tattoos or paints, unlike classic tattoos that are created by piercing the skin. Hair braiding or wrapping is popular at beach destinations and can also be done anytime, anywhere.

9. Working on a Cruise Ship

Working on a cruise ship is more permanent, but it still fits within the scope of travel jobs. There are numerous jobs that you can do on a cruise ship, and each of those offers some nice wages. Understandably, a captain makes much more than a cabin steward, but all employees receive benefits and gratuity. You can use the time between shifts to discover beautiful cities wherever you stop.

<p>Discussions about places to visit in Montenegro tend to begin with Kotor, and it is easy to see why. Kotor packs plenty into its relatively small borders, with a proud maritime history allied to modern cafes, restaurants, and bars, plus some of the most alluring churches in this part of the world. Stop for a romantic courtyard lunch at Pržun before taking the arduous walk up to the fortress walls, where the ultimate view of the Bay of Kotor awaits.</p>

Travel and tourism to break records, bring over $11 trillion in 2024: report

The global travel and tourism industry is expected to be at an 'all-time high' this year.

Travel and tourism is expected to be a boon for the global economy this year.

Countries around the world will see travel and tourism produce $11.1 trillion in 2024, according to a report released Thursday by the World Travel & Tourism Council.

The group said the forecasted global economic contribution would mark an "all-time high" from the roughly $10 trillion the industry brought in pre-pandemic 2019.

The coronavirus hit many industries hard, with travel and tourism in particular seeing negative impacts from the lockdowns and restrictions instituted in the early days of the pandemic.

This year,   both international and domestic tourists are expected to splash out during their travels.

The report, which involved a partnership with Oxford Economics, projected a record $5.4 trillion in spending would come from domestic travelers. That would set a record, according to the WTTC.

Meanwhile, international tourists will reportedly contribute $1.89 trillion.

And the WTTC had an even rosier outlook for a decade from now, when it predicted global tourism and travel will be responsible for nearly $16 trillion and 449 million jobs.

ECLIPSE TOURISM EXPECTED TO BRING BIG BUCKS TO AREAS IN PATH OF TOTALITY

The travel and tourism industry’s performance in 2023 provided momentum for this year, the group said.
