Take the time to visit a traditional teahouse, wander the historic streets filled with artisans stores and be sure to try the delicate tempura as this is a town of culture and cuisine.

DAY 20 & 21, TAKAYAMA - HIDA FOLK VILLAGE - JAPANESE ALPS

Takayama is a delightful 17th century town perched high in the Japanese Alps best explored on foot to appreciate the fine wooden architecture and friendly feel of the centre. The nearby Hida Folk Village is worth a few hours to see what rural Japanese life was like centuries ago and a drink at the atmospheric Desolation Row rock bar is a good way to end the day.

DAY 22, MATSUMOTO - JAPAN'S OLDEST WOODEN CASTLE

Matsumoto is a cosmopolitan town with great views of the Alps and pretty streets filled with cafes and galleries but the highlight here is Matsumoto-jo,  Japan’s oldest wooden castle dating back to 1595. The castle is a designated National Treasure so be sure to visit and climb the steep stairs all the way up to the top floor for great views of the surrounding area.

DAY 23, YUDANAKA ONSEN - JIGOKUDANI SNOW MONKEY PARK

Yudanaka Onsen is a hot spring resort which we visit not only to soak ourselves in these natural pools but also to visit the nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park where you have the chance to see the wild Japanese Snow Monkeys bathing in the hot springs.

DAY 24, 25, 26 & 27, TOKYO - SHINJUKU - GOLDEN GAI - MT. FUJI DAY TRIP

Our final destination on this tour is Tokyo where we base ourselves in the dazzling Shinjuku district, the nightlife hub of the city famous for bizarre robot restaurants, giant Godzilla statues, fantastic cosplay shops and all-night karaoke parlors. This is also a good place to take an optional day trip to Mt Fuji. The Golden Gai labyrinth of rickety wooden bars is a perfect place for us to have our farewell night and say goodbye to our fellow adventurers who have travelled with us through South Korea & Japan!

This tour ends in Tokyo after breakfast on the final morning of the trip.

ADD ON NORTH KOREA OR KAMCHATKA

Before this tour starts we visit North Korea and after this tour ends we continue to Kamchatka so if you would like to extend your tour to include North Korea or Kamchatka please feel free to contact us as we are happy to create a bespoke itinerary and price for you.

We use comfortable local buses to travel around South Korea and we always travel by day with most journeys being just a few hours long. From South Korea we catch a fast ferry to Japan.

In Japan we use a mixture of bullet trains, direct local trains and the odd local bus service to get around the country at a leisurely pace. Local transport in Japan is always very comfortable.

We provide an average of one meal per day on this tour, usually breakfast at the hotels we stay at. Lunches and evening meals at your own expense. Local food is generally very cheap so if you are on a budget eat what the locals eat and you will be sure to get a real flavour of the country at a cheap price.

ACCOMMODATION

We mostly stay at 3 star hotels during this tour to ensure you are comfortable at all times. Please note that Korean & Japanese hotel rooms are usually smaller than western hotel rooms but are generally very modern and comfortable.

In Japan we also spend at least one night in a traditional ryokan (Japanese Inn) with sliding doors, tatami mats and futon beds to give you a taste of authentic Japan.

Accommodation is provided on a twin share basis so if you are travelling alone be prepared to share your room with another member of the tour, male or female. Your tour leader will always strive to put you in a room with a suitable partner. Couples can request a room with a double bed.

There is a single supplement fee of £900 if you are a solo traveller and prefer to have a private room just for yourself.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. Your contract is with Madventure Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (Company No. 6809461) whose office is at 10 Ablett Close, Oxford, OX4 1XH, United Kingdom.

2. A deposit of £300 is payable at the time of booking. The deposit is non-refundable unless Madventure is unable to offer you a place or you cancel within 14 days of the initial booking date. Madventure guarantees not to increase the tour price once the deposit has been received.

3. A booking is made in the name of the client and is not transferable to another person. You are only permitted to transfer your deposit once to a future tour, after that a further £300 non-refundable deposit will be required to book another tour. Please note that you will be affected if you have transferred and there is a price increase as you will have to pay the current tour price at the time that the tour balance payment is due.

4. Eight months prior to departure a further payment must be received to cover 50% of the total tour price in order to secure your booking. This payment is non-refundable unless we can not provide the tour. The final 50% balance of your tour payment must then be paid in full at least four months prior to the tour start date at which time the tour will be confirmed to run. Once the tour is confirmed to run you will not receive any refunds of any monies paid. If the full payment is not received 4 months prior to departure Madventure may deem the booking cancelled and all monies paid will be forfeited. If you book within the 4 to 8 month period prior to departure a non-refundable 50% deposit of the total tour price should be paid upon booking. If you book within the 4 month period prior to departure the full non-refundable 100% tour payment must be paid upon booking.

5.  Cancellation of a booking must be notified in writing and when received by Madventure any monies paid will be forfeited. You acknowledge that payment for the tour is an intrinsic part of the tour’s income and contributes towards the overall costs of equipment, vehicle running costs, staff administration, travel permits, etc. and Madventure will have incurred a large part of its costs before the actual departure date. You will not receive a refund of any amount after the tour has been confirmed to run (which will usually happen no later than 4 months prior to the tour departing). We therefore recommend you take out your travel insurance from the date you make your final tour balance payment, 4 months prior to departure, so you are insured if you have to withdraw off the tour. If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy you may be able to reclaim these charges but it is your sole responsibility to do so and we accept no liability for any acts or omissions of your insurance company.

6. It is unlikely that we will have to make any changes to your tour, but we do plan all tours many months in advance. Occasionally, we may have to make changes and we reserve the right to do so at any time. Most of these changes will be minor and we will advise you of them at the earliest possible date. We also reserve the right in any circumstances to cancel your tour. For example, if the minimum number of clients required for a particular tour is not reached, we may have to cancel it. However, we will not cancel your tour less than 4 months before your departure date (except for reasons of Force Majeure). If we are unable to provide the tour for any reason you can either have a full refund of all monies paid within 14 working days of the tour being cancelled or accept an offer of an alternative tour of comparable standard from us, if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value).  In the event of the tour being cancelled prior to departure, all monies paid by you towards the tour cost only will be refunded. In the event of a cancellation Madventure is not responsible for reimbursing equipment, flights, visa costs, vaccinations, medication, etc. purchased by yourself so we therefore recommend you have suitable travel insurance to ensure these types of expenses are covered under the terms of your insurance policy as you may be able to reclaim these charges but it is your sole responsibility to do so and we accept no liability for any acts or omissions of your insurance company.

7. In the unlikely event of a Force Majeure situation that forces us to cancel the tour within 4 months of the planned departure date because of unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, you can either have a full refund of all monies paid within 14 working days of the tour being cancelled or accept an offer of an alternative tour of comparable standard from us, if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). In the unlikely event of a Force Majeure situation that forces us to cancel or change the tour while it is underway because of unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control we will not refund you or pay you compensation, so we therefore recommend you have suitable travel insurance as if the reason for the tour cancellation while underway is covered under the terms of your insurance policy you may be able to reclaim these charges but it is your sole responsibility to do so and we accept no liability for any acts or omissions of your insurance company. Force Majeure situations can include, for example, war, riot, industrial dispute, terrorist activity and its consequences, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, epidemics, pandemics, health risks, closed or congested airports, ports or stations, poor local infrastructure, changes imposed by rescheduling or cancellation of transport by the transport supplier such as flights by airlines or main charterer, the alteration of transport or transport types, adverse weather conditions (actual or threatened), avalanche and technical failure with transport, Foreign & Commonwealth Office advice changing and advising against travel to the tour destination.

8. If you choose to leave the tour for any reason on your own accord once the tour is underway you will not receive any compensation from Madventure including any refunds of the tour payment and/or the local payment. We therefore recommend you have suitable travel insurance as if the reason for your departure is covered under the terms of your insurance policy you may be able to reclaim these charges but it is your sole responsibility to do so and we accept no liability for any acts or omissions of your insurance company.

9. We reserve the right at any time prior to the departure date, without prior consultation with yourself, to merge your tour with one or more other tours travelling at the same time. This will not constitute a major change and would usually just mean swapping vehicles.

10. The tour payment and local payment cover transport, accommodation, some related ferry and train tickets, meals and national park entry fees as specified on the website, repair of our expedition vehicle as well as repair and replacement of camping equipment including stools, cooking equipment & utensils.

11. The tour leader has sole responsibility for the local payment. Any local payment monies or stock remaining at the tour end are non-refundable.

12. You undertake to comply with the laws and regulations, whether in respect of health, immigration, currency exchange control, dress or any other matter of all the countries visited during the tour.

13. You undertake to obtain a valid passport and have enough blank pages in the passport for the tour and your specific passport and visa requirements. Immigration requirements are your responsibility and you should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates. We do not accept any responsibility and shall not be liable if you cannot travel or cannot participate in any part of the tour because you have not complied with any passport, visa or immigration requirements. You are responsible for obtaining and having available the necessary documents (including but not limited to full, current passport with enough blank pages to complete the trip and valid for at least 9 months from the last day of the tour and visas for all periods, countries and territories within the tour) enabling you to participate in the tour and shall comply with all local legislation and regulations of the countries in which the tour takes place (including immigration requirements, customs regulations and currency exchange). You shall indemnify us against any loss or expense that we may incur or suffer as a result of breach of this condition by you.  We cannot guarantee visa prices and availability of visas. Ultimately visas are your own responsibility to obtain.

14. Madventure reserves the right to deviate from the advertised tour route if in their reasonable opinion such deviation is necessary for the safety or well-being of any or any one of the members of the tour or for the satisfactory progress of the tour. In the event of it becoming necessary to fly over a country or countries in order to satisfactorily and safely continue the tour, all costs of your flights will be borne by yourself.

15. Madventure accepts no responsibility for matters arising out of political disputes, border closures, epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters, climate, armed robbery, terrorism, etc. Should it become necessary to abandon a tour because of such an event Madventure will be entitled to retain all monies paid. We therefore recommend you have suitable travel insurance as if the reason for cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy you may be able to reclaim these charges but it is your sole responsibility to do so and we accept no liability for any acts or omissions of your insurance company.

16. You accept that owing to the nature of countries visited, all tours involve an element of personal risk and are of a potentially hazardous and unpredictable nature. In many countries we visit, the basic infrastructure, such as roads, is very poor and therefore less safe than that familiar to people from many western countries. In particular, lack of road markings or warning signs, unmarked speed bumps, seasonal flooding of roads and bridges, local vehicles which are poorly maintained and driven and which are hazardous to other road users etc. are factors beyond the control of Madventure. You accept that in some areas we drive off-road and that this involves personal risk when the expedition vehicle can be negotiating rough terrain. Madventure owns and operates many of its own expedition vehicles and employs its own crew. Where stated, locally arranged transport and crew, including trains, ferries, buses or coaches are used. Where Madventure’s own vehicles and/or crew are not used for the above services, you agree that the obligation of Madventure to yourself is to select normally competent, independent subcontractors to provide the necessary services related to the tour and to exercise reasonable care in selecting such suppliers to provide these. You also accept that you undertake this tour at your own risk and your participation is your own decision and does not form any part of your contract with Madventure. Madventure does not take responsibility for cancellations, unreliability of services or safety of operators, agents or contractors.

17. You accept that local emergency facilities are usually of a very limited nature. Hospitals outside of large cities often have no accident and emergency facilities and emergency transport facilities can be non-existent.

18. If you have a problem during your trip please inform the tour leader immediately who will endeavour to put things right. If your complaint is not resolved locally please follow this up by emailing or writing to our office giving all other relevant information and, where possible, evidence. We must receive any such complaint no later than 28 days from the date of completion of your tour in order to take appropriate action. Please keep your letter concise and to the point. This will assist us to quickly identify your concerns and speed up our response to you.

19. We do not accept any liability or responsibility for any personal possessions (including but not limited to cameras, jewellery, valuables and money) which is carried on or in our vehicles, carried on public transport or transport supplied by independent subcontractors, left in accommodation provided by us or our suppliers during a trip or left in our care during a tour. Such items are carried and/or left at your own risk.

20. Excursions or other tours that you may choose to book or pay for whilst you are on our tour are not part of your tour arrangements provided by us. For any excursion or other tour that you book your contract will be with the operator of the excursion or tour and not with us. We are not responsible for the provision of the excursion or tour or for anything that happens during the course of its provision by the operator. You accept that the prices quoted for optional activities are approximate as local prices can and do change. Any of the optional activities listed are not necessarily endorsed or recommended by Madventure. You also accept that you undertake any activity at your own risk and your participation is your own decision and does not form any part of your contract with Madventure. Madventure does not take responsibility for cancellations, unreliability of services or safety of operators, agents or contractors.

21. Whilst a tour is in progress you will at all times be expected to act in accordance with all reasonable instructions from us and/or the tour leader. We may exclude you from the tour or any part thereof at any time (including during the tour itself) if we are of the opinion that you are likely to prejudice the good order, discipline or safety of the tour, including as a result of failing to comply with the tour leader’s instructions, breaking any law or regulation of any country where the tour takes place or failing to adhere to the tour code of conduct, provided that we exercise our discretion reasonably in this regard. In such an event you shall reimburse to us any reasonable costs, losses or expenses which we incur or suffer as a result of our decision to exclude you from the tour, and Madventure shall cease to have any responsibility to/for you. No refund will be given for any unused services.

22. By completing the booking form you confirm that you appreciate the risks involved in the tour and that you do not suffer (or have ever suffered) from any pre-existing medical condition that may prevent you from actively participating in the tour other than those that have been declared to us. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are medically fit enough to undertake the tour and to ensure that you have received the necessary vaccinations and medications (and taken them as prescribed by your doctor) relevant to the destination country. Unless informed otherwise in writing we will assume that you are in good health and are not aware of any reason why you may be unsuitable to take part in the tour. We recommend that you consult your doctor before making a booking to ensure that you are medically fit and are fully aware regarding the immunizations and medical issues related to your destination countries. If you have any pre-existing medical condition, illness or disability, are undergoing medical treatment or, since entering into the contract, develop any medical condition, illness or disability or undergo any medical treatment; you will give us full particulars at the earliest opportunity and at the latest sixty (60) days before the departure date. If it is later discovered that a pre-existing condition was not declared within the specified time, and such condition would, if we had knowledge of it, have led to our refusal to accept or to cancel your booking, we reserve the right to withdraw you from the trip without any refund or recompense. In such an event, you shall reimburse to us any reasonable costs, losses or expenses which we incur or suffer as a result. In the event of you being withdrawn from a tour, no refunds will be given and we will not be responsible for (and you agree to indemnify us against) any costs, claims, losses and expenses arising including costs of repatriation, eg. flights and legal expenses. By agreeing to these conditions, you provide your consent to us and our insurers obtaining your medical records should we consider it necessary. You will be responsible for any charges for the provision of the information. We reserve the right to inspect your vaccination book at any time and to withdraw you from the tour in the event that you have not received and/or taken all the requisite inoculations and/or medication. If the information provided by you is incorrect and we discover that the correct information affects your suitability to take part in the tour, we may terminate the contract and withdraw you from the tour without refund or recompense, including during the trip. You agree and acknowledge that certain activities undertaken whilst you are on the tour may be inherently hazardous and have risks associated with them. You agree to abide by all instructions given to you whilst you are on the tour and you acknowledge that we cannot be held responsible for any injuries that may arise as a result of you failing to comply with such instructions.

23. You must be covered by personal travel insurance to undertake any Madventure tour. We recommend you take out a travel insurance policy that covers you fully against the cost of tour cancellation by you or by Force Majeure, medical care and repatriation should you become too ill to continue and above all covers you against the cost of air evacuation should sickness or injury necessitate such a course of action. You should also note that passenger liability insurance covering vehicles, particularly in third world countries, may be inadequate. It is therefore important that your travel insurance cover makes sufficient provision for your dependents in the event of an accident. Please note however that we have no control over the availability or standard of medical and repatriation services and facilities in the areas we visit and these do not form any part of our contract with you. Please remember that many of the areas we visit are not as developed as the UK and the availability and standard of such services may well be lower. Please read your travel insurance policy details carefully and take them with you when you travel. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance cover you purchase is suitable and adequate for your particular needs. We do not check individual insurance policies for suitability.

24. It is understood that on the Madventure tours where we use our own expedition vehicles the sections of the tour that travel through Europe, USA, Canada and Mexico are provided to you free of charge. You will not have to pay any additional fee to travel through Europe, USA, Canada and Mexico with us but it is understood that we do not operate for hire and reward in these areas. We do this purely as a legality in order to operate our specialised overland vehicle in these areas legally.

25. Privacy & Data Protection – we shall ensure that appropriate security measures are in place to protect your personal data (as defined in the European GDPR act 2018 and the UK Data Protection Act 2018) and we do not store our customers financial details. When you make a booking, you do however consent to all the information you provide being passed on to our suppliers, agents, subcontractors, employees or volunteers whether based inside or outside of Europe for the purposes of us providing you with the tour.

26. By agreeing to these terms and conditions you consent (unless otherwise stated on your application form) to our staff taking photographs and or video footage of you during the tour and that these images may be used by us for publicity and training purposes including, but not limited to, brochures, websites, marketing material and in the media.

27. We shall be entitled to novate or assign the contract or any part of it to any third party. You shall not be entitled to assign the contract or any part of it. This contract is made on the terms of these conditions, which are governed by English law, and subject to the provisions of condition you agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts. If any of these conditions is found by any court or other competent authority to be wholly or partly unfair or unenforceable the validity of the rest of the booking conditions and the rest of the condition in question shall not be affected and shall remain valid and enforceable to the extent permitted by law. A reference in these conditions to a statute, convention or regulation shall be as a reference to that statute convention or regulation as amended, re-enacted or extended at the relevant time. The headings in these conditions are for convenience only and shall not affect their interpretation. Where the context otherwise requires, words importing the singular meaning shall include the plural meaning and vice versa and words denoting the masculine gender shall include the feminine and neuter genders. Where the context so admits, words denoting persons shall include natural persons, companies, corporations, firms, partnerships, limited liability partnerships, joint trips, trusts, voluntary associations and other incorporated and/or unincorporated bodies or other entities (in each case, whether or not having separate legal personality) and all such words shall be construed interchangeably in that manner.

PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION

Personal budget & travel money.

Personal Budget

We recommend a budget of $1250 per person to live comfortably during this tour. This budget should cover day to day things like snacks, soft drinks, lunches & evening meals, the odd few beers, etc.

Souvenirs are something that can be very cheap or very expensive so if you are going to be buying things like silk carpets you should budget for it.

Please also have a look at our Optional Excursions list as you may want to budget for a few of those activities too.

Travel Money

We recommend you bring USD $300 in cash as spending money on this tour. US Dollars are generally accepted everywhere for exchange.

ATM’s are widely available for you to draw local currency using your Visa or Mastercard credit/debit card so there is no need to have a lot of cash on you during this tour.

To keep your money/credit cards/passport/tablet/camera/laptop safe we recommend you purchase a ‘Pacsafe Travelsafe’ product. They offer various size portable anti-theft bags that can be attached to the vehicles when travelling and also attached to the toilet/bed/closet in your hotel room when off the vehicles.

VISAS & PASSPORTS

Below is general information and recommendations regarding visas and passports. Visas are ultimately your own responsibility to obtain and visa requirements may vary according to your nationality and place of application, so use the information below as a guide only. Madventure is in no way responsible for obtaining your visas or passports.

South Korea visas are issued free of charge upon arrival for most Europeans, North & South Americans, Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans. Other nationalities should check to see if you require a visa before arrival.

Japan visas are issued free of charge upon arrival for most Europeans, North Americans, Australians and New Zealanders. Other nationalities should check to see if you require a visa before arrival.

Please ensure you have 2 free pages in your passport in order to accommodate all the immigration stamps and ensure your passport is valid for at least 8 months after the tour start date.

VACCINATIONS & MEDICAL

Vaccination requirements are constantly changing so we recommend you seek the latest professional medical advice at least 8 weeks before departure to ensure you allow yourself enough time to obtain all necessary vaccinations. Nomad Travel’s website has up-to-date information on vaccinations, malaria and other general medical advice for all the countries we will be visiting and they also administer vaccinations at their Travel Clinics in various locations within the UK.

www.nomadtravel.co.uk

Alternatively speak with your local Health Professionals for current accurate information. You will need to make an appointment with your GP or Travel Clinic and take a list of the countries you are visiting and the approximate dates when you will be there.

An up to date Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate should be brought with you as it is sometimes required to enter certain countries on this tour.

Medically Fit & Able

You need to be in good general health for this tour and be reasonably fit and able. You do not need to be super-fit by any means and all ages are welcome. We always attract a very broad age range on these tours, from people in their 20’s through to people in their 70’s.

Please inform us of any medical conditions that you have before departure so that your crew knows how to deal with a medical situation if it should arise. All information will be kept confidential unless you request us to inform your fellow travelers. For example, it may be wise to inform fellow travelers if you are allergic to something like bee-stings so they know what to do if you get stung.

First Aid Kit

The tour leader carries a first aid kit during the tour but it is recommended that you bring your own basic first aid kit for general use.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

It is compulsory that every person who travels with Madventure obtain travel insurance for the complete duration of the tour. Proof of travel insurance must be shown before joining a tour.

You may be covered under your credit card’s travel insurance so it might be worth checking with your credit card provider first.

There are various travel insurance companies to choose from and a Google search will bring up a vast selection but for a comprehensive reliable policy that includes Covid Cover and Medical Repatriation we recommend a London based company named Campbell Irvine, Telephone: +44 20 7938 1734, https://microsite. campbellirvinedirect.com/ madventure/ . They are familiar with what we do so if you mention Madventure and the tour you are travelling on they should be able to provide excellent cover for you.

For people based in North America a company called Allianz offers good cover – Telephone: +1 866 884 3556, www.allianztravelinsurance.com

If you choose to obtain your travel insurance through another company please ensure you read the small-print and make sure your policy includes Covid Cover and Medical Repatriation.

NITTY GRITTY

We always like to go through every aspect of the trip with you to ensure that you are as informed and prepared as possible. At Madventure we believe in giving you the nitty-gritty details as well as the obvious highlights, as in our opinion these are just as important and we want to explain the tour in as much detail as possible so you can be sure you are suited and prepared for one of our adventures. If after reading this, you decide that this tour is not for you then, as long as it is within 14 days of your initial booking, you can cancel off the tour and receive a full refund of your Tour Payment.

The following may sound a little negative at times, but it’s just so we are secure in the knowledge that we have provided you with as much information as possible, the good and the bad, to ensure everybody is completely aware of exactly what type of trips we run for the benefit of you, us and your fellow travellers as there is nothing worse than getting someone booking on the trip when it is not what they actually wanted or expected. You need to know what you are in for and be able to handle it!

You must be medically fit and able to ensure you can participate in all aspects of the tour including carrying your own bags to the hotels, walking around the sites we visit, etc. You do not need to be super fit by any means.

When things go wrong: When we are in South Korea & Japan things generally always go to plan but if something unexpected does delay us or force us to change our itinerary please understand that sometimes things happen that are out of our control and we may have to make an alternative arrangement. Please be prepared to expect the unexpected and accept that things might go wrong from time to time. These instances are usually the stories that remain with everyone so enjoy the experience An easy-going approach will help the situation immensely. Moaning about every little thing that doesn’t go our way will not!

Attitude & Group Living: A good, easy-going attitude will help you enjoy this trip and ensure you are liked by your fellow travelers as well as the locals. The one thing that is extremely detrimental to a tour such as this is your common ‘moaner’. It has nothing to do with age, sex or nationality, it just matters that although they signed up for this ‘in theory’ they can’t cope ‘in practice’ and it’s always got to be someone’s fault. It sounds a bit harsh but by weeding out any moaners early on we can have a chat with them and ensure your tour is as good as it can be. By ensuring everyone is on the same page from the get go will start us off in good stead.

We have no age restrictions and if there is one thing we have come to realize, through experience, is that it’s the mental attitude that counts the most and a broader age range is better on this trip as it stops the stereotyping – the more in the mix the better.

We can guarantee that at some stage during the tour you will have to just fit in and go with the flow when it’s not what you personally wanted to do. When situations arise where we can’t please everybody we always aim to please the ‘majority of the group’ not the individual.

Please be aware that if any particular person is constantly causing the rest of the group (or the crew) grief due to their behavior they will be warned and then asked to leave the tour if nothing improves and no refund will be given. This is obviously the most extreme situation but we will not let one or two rude individuals spoil it for everybody else. Everybody knows the score from the start and this is for everyone’s benefit. Usually everyone who travels with us has a relaxed approach and everybody gets on very well as this is a short tour.

This is a once in a lifetime experience so let’s all enjoy it!

Travel times & proposed itineraries: We have designed this tour so that we are not stuck on trains or buses overnight. We travel by day and arrive at our destinations before nightfall.

In South Korea & Japan you are free to go sightseeing at your leisure.

On this tour it’s usually only a few hours between destinations and you have plenty of time to look around the sites.

Our proposed itinerary can sometimes change if an area of our route becomes off-limits for any reason.

Delays: We always strive to arrive at our destinations on time but if we experience any delays we will adjust our itinerary accordingly.

The proposed itinerary is just that, ‘proposed’, and can and will change at the crew’s discretion if need be.

Drugs: Please be aware that drugs such as marijuana and cocaine are illegal in South Korea & Japan and they enforce severe punishment for being caught in possession. There is NEVER to be any illegal drugs carried by any travellers on this tour as you would not only jeopardize your own freedom but also the well-being of the entire group if you are caught in possession.

If you are caught with any kind of illegal drugs on this tour, regardless of the amount, you will be asked to leave the tour immediately and no refund will be given.

This is a very serious rule as any inconsideration can lead to the tour being cancelled and other innocent people arrested. We will not hesitate to remove someone if we have to so please respect your other tour members.

Your Crew: You will normally have a crew of 1 experienced Madventure guide who fills the role of being the tour leader. On some tours we may also have a cameraman who is there to help market our tours and update our social media accounts.

In South Korea & Japan you will be free to visit all the sites at your leisure. Guided tours can be arranged should you wish to get the history of all the sites but generally most people prefer to have the freedom to visit all the sites on their own or with a few of their fellow travellers.

Your Madventure guide is responsible for the overall well-being of the group and will sort out all the transport, accommodation, permits, border crossings, etc. and generally ensure the smooth running of the tour. Your Madventure guide is not responsible for giving you the history of every site we visit, local guides can be arranged to provide that type of information should you want it.

Your crew will be hand-picked and trained by Madventure and will have experience of leading tours but they may or may not have done this tour before. They will however have detailed notes from previous tours and backup from the office in the UK.

Tipping: Tipping the tour leader at the end of your tour is always appreciated. As this is a relatively short tour we recommend you tip your Madventure guide a minimum of $100 at the end of the tour if you are happy with their service. Thank you.

Day 3: Morning tour of Seoul; afternoon free to explore independently

Half-day tour of Seoul:  After departing your hotel begin with a walk along the Cheonggyecheon stream. Cheonggyecheon is an age old canal in downtown Seoul that was filled with concrete in the 1960's, but reopened in 2005 in its original state. It is now an 11km-long public recreational space, complete with gardens, fountains, and walking trails. Continue on to City Hall stopping briefly at Tapgol Park, marking the spot of a huge popular uprising against the Japanese occupation in 1919. Follow on to Insa-dong antiques street - an area of artisanal shops and traditional teahouses in the heart of modern Seoul. Near the top of Insadong is the Jogyesa Temple - small and little-visited, but one of the most beautiful complexes in the city.

Jump on the subway and head down to Gwanghwamun - Seoul's answer to the Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue, or Champs-Elysee. Here you can you see the towering statues of Korean heroes Admiral Yi Sun Shin and King Sejong, both of whom played a vital role in the Korean history. At the very top of Gwanghwamun lies the sprawling Gyeongbokkung Palace. The Palace was built by the Joseon Dynasty in 1394. For centuries, this immense complex was the centre of power, until deposed under the Japanese occupation. From the back gate of Gyeongbukgung you will catch a glimpse Cheongwadae, or the Blue House, Korea's presidential palace. Today's tour will be conducted on foot and by public transport (fees included) in the company of your English-speaking private guide.

Afternoon at leisure:  The remainder of the day is free for you to relax at the hotel, or continue exploring independently.

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Center Mark Hotel  (Standard Room)

Meals:  Breakfast

Gwangjang Market, Seoul

Day 4: Free day to explore Seoul independently

Day at leisure / suggested activities:  Today you have a second full day in the Korean capital, at leisure and unaccompanied. Arming yourselves with cheap T-money transport cards would be a fine idea - with which you can explore the city independently on all modes of public transport. Sites not covered yesterday and worth a look would be the Bukchon Hanok Village, Mt. Namsan and the N Seoul Tower, the National Museum, or the futuristic downtown Gangnam area. If you would like further touring to be built in on this day - particularly to out of town areas such as Panmunjeom and the DMZ, the historical city of Suwon, or the picturesque lake city of Chuncheon - please inform us in advance and we will happily assist.

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Center Mark Hotel  (Standard Room)

Meals: Breakfast

Round off the afternoon with a trip to Anapji Pond, a deeply picturesque network of water gardens and palaces. According to the historical records of ‘Samguk-sagi,' Anapji Pond was built during the 14th year of King Munmu (in power 661-681 AD) of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC-935 AD). Small mountains were created inside the palace walls, beautiful flowers were planted, and rare animals were brought in to create an exquisitely exotic garden fit for royalty.

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Swiss Rosen Benikea  (Standard Room)

KTX train to Gyeongju

Day 6: Morning tour of Gyeongju, then continue to Busan

Morning tour of Gyeongju:  After breakfast you will be taken to Tumuli Park, a large green space housing more than 20 traditional tombs from the Silla dynasty. Within the same complex is the Cheomseongdae - an ancient star-gazing tower of nearly 10m in height, and the oldest such observatory in East Asia. Any time remaining in the morning can be used to visit some of Gyeongju's remaining sites, or perhaps take a short hike in the sprawling Gyeongju National Park.

Road journey to Busan:  After you have finished in Gyeongju you will hit the road with your private driver-guide, heading south to the coastal city of Busan. This journey should be around 2 hours, depending on local traffic. On arrival in Busan will be taken straight to your hotel to check in.

Afternoon tour of Busan:  Once checked-in you will head out to explore this busy seaport city. First stop will be at the 1,300 year-old Tongdosa temple, around 1 hour north of the city. Tongdosa has survived repeated wars and invasions in this corner of Korea, and remains a deeply pretty spot surrounding by pine forests and rolling hills. Return to Busan for a tour of the city itself, taking in the Busan Tower and Yongdusan Park, the BIFF Square (Busan International Film Festival), and the lively Gukje market. Finish at Jagalchi, the largest seafood market in the country. Should you wish you can purchase fresh seafood here, and take it straight into one of the upstairs restaurant to be sashimied and served to you for a nominal fee. Make sure to barter-hard with the famous Jagalchi ajummas!

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Ibis Ambassador Haeundae  (Standard Room)

Yeongdo Lighthouse, Busan

Day 7: Day at leisure

Day at leisure:  Today you have a full day at leisure to explore this picturesque seaside city. If the weather is good, head to one of Busan's beaches - both Haeundae and Gwangalli are among the most famous in the country. Note that the better the weather, the less space on the beach! Alternatively you may prefer to use Busan's efficient public transport system to explore the districts numerous temples and museums, or head downtown to negotiate the active local markets. A pleasant walk can also be had through the Gamcheon Art Village on the south edge of the city, a favela-like neighbourhood of multi-coloured houses clinging to the hillside, littered with graffiti and street art at every turn.

Accommodation: Stay tonight at the  Ibis Ambassador Haeundae  (Standard Room)

Gamcheon Village, Busan

Day 8: Fly to Japan

Osaka Castle, Osaka

Day 9: Train to Kyoto; afternoon guided tour

Train from Osaka to Kyoto:  Make your own way to Osaka station this morning, where you will board a train to Kyoto. You will be supplied with tickets for the journey; all seats are unreserved so you can travel on any train. There are frequent departures and journey time is between 25 and 45 minutes depending on which train you take. On arrival make your own way to your hotel.

Half-day private tour of Kyoto:  After checking in you will meet up with your private English-speaking guide in the lobby of your hotel, then set out together to explore Kyoto. You will be taking a half-day private tour of the city, travelling by public transport. Places of interest that can be visited include Kiyomizu Temple, perched on a hillside with good views towards central Kyoto. Dating from 1633, the main hall sits on hundreds of interconnecting wooden pillars above a sacred spring that is believed to have therapeutic qualities. Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Japan's most famous sights. This glittering temple is covered entirely in gold leaf and set on a small lake amongst well-tended gardens. Ryoanji Temple belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and was founded in 1450. The adjoining garden is an austere collection of 15 rocks adrift in a sea of sand. Nijo Castle was built in 1603 to demonstrate the power of the first Tokugawa Shogun Ieyusa. The design of this castle, built by the first Shogun of a united Japan, reflects an ambition to impress rather than anticipation of combat.

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Royal Park Hotel  (Standard Room)

Yasako Pagoda, Gion District, Kyoto

Day 10: Exploring Kyoto independently

Self guided touring in and around Kyoto:  Today you have a free day in Kyoto. This is an opportunity to further explore the city. Kyoto has a tremendous amount to offer whether you wish to discover some of the smaller temples and shrines dotted around the city or stroll through the bustling Nishiki Shijo market. The Kimono fashion show in the Nishijin textile district is well worth a look and if you wish to see some of the natural beauty of the Kyoto area then the Hozugawa river trip makes for a great afternoon or morning travelling down the river on a traditional style boat. If you prefer to get out of the city we definitely recommend a day-trip to Nara, or further afield to Mount Koya, Himeji, or Kobe. There are a wide variety of day trips possible from Kyoto so if you have a destination in mind please let us know and we would be happy to assist.

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Royal Park Hotel  (Standard Room)

The Sumida River cruise travels through the busy heart of the city and to the edge of Tokyo Bay where you will be able to see the reclaimed land islands and the large Rainbow Bridge that dominates the bay. Hamarikyu Garden is a tranquil oasis on the edge of the bay and flanked by the modern skyscrapers of the Shiodome district. The gardens reflect Japan's changing seasons. Enjoy Japanese tea with Japanese sweets in the wooden pavilion by the edge of the park's lake.

Accommodation:  Stay tonight at the  Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku  (Standard Room)

Shinjuku District, Tokyo

Day 12: Exploring Tokyo independently

Day at leisure in Tokyo:  Tokyo is one of the world's most vibrant cities and today you will have a full day available to explore the sights, shops and restaurants! Although initially a little overwhelming, Tokyo's first class public transport system makes getting around quick and easy and with careful planning you can see a lot in a short space of time. Tokyo is made up of districts each with their own distinctive flavour and atmosphere: Asakusa is the old town area with Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple at its heart; a chance to experience a little of what Tokyo was like before the economic miracle of the 1970s and 80s. The Ginza in the very centre of the city is a shopper's paradise with endless boutiques and department stores interspersed with some of the city's finest restaurants and European style cafes; Shibuya is Tokyo at its most fun and youthful, attracting a lively mix of students and young professionals to its bars, restaurants, manga shops and all night clubs. Just down the tracks you will find Shinjuku, soaring skyscrapers to the west of the station; endless neon lights to the east in one of the city's premiere entertainment areas. Shinjuku is what many people think of when they imagine Tokyo and as such is a must see; and in the centre of the city, close to the iconic Tokyo Tower is Roppongi, the after hours playground of the city's expat community, teeming with clubs and bars and restaurants from the very upscale at the impressive Roppongi Hills development to street-side kebabs and yakitori at Roppongi crossing. These are just a few of the districts to explore - there are many, many more if you have time. Tokyo has so much to offer any visitor and just wandering the streets of this megalopolis is a fascinating experience with new sights, sounds and tastes to be had around every corner.

Day 13: Suggested day trips from Tokyo

Suggested day trips from Tokyo:  Today you might like to make an excursion from Tokyo. The charming town of Kamakura lies just 1 hour to the west of Tokyo and can be reached by direct train from Shinjuku Station (890 yen each way). Kamakura was formally the capital of Japan for a short period in the 12th century and at that time was possibly the world's largest city with a population of over one million. Today however, it is a sleepy coastal town which attracts large numbers of day trippers to spend time exploring the beautiful shrines and temples. The most famous site if the impressive bronze daibutsu (big Buddha) which is certainly a must-see for any trip to Kamakura.

An alternative trip is to Nikko, located 2 hours to the north of Tokyo. There is one direct train from Shinjuku to Nikko a day which costs 1,890 yen each way. Nikko is not only surrounded by stunning scenery that makes up the national park, but is also home to the World Heritage site of the Tosho-gu Shrine. Nikko has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and contains many important Buddhist and Shinto shrines and temples, but the most impressive and most famous is definitely Tosho-gu with its vivid colours and many ornate carvings. Once you have marvelled at Tosho-gu there are plenty more temples dotted throughout the surrounding forests that will keep you bewitched for a long time. Even higher up into the mountains from Nikko, it is very much worth visiting the serene Chuzenji-ko Lake and Kegon waterfalls. There are some pleasant walks around here and you may even pass some local monkeys!

If you find that after a while Tokyo's concrete and neon get you yearning for countryside, fresh air and scenery then you can do no better than a day trip out west to sacred Mount Takao (Takao-san in Japanese), part of a range of wooded mountains that form a natural boundary to Tokyo's urban sprawl and mark the start of the Chichibu-Tama National Park. After an easy train journey of just under an hour you will arrive at the base of the mountain from where numerous clearly-marked hiking trails (or a cable-car!) wind their way up to the summit. Many of the routes offer fine views back towards Tokyo and are dotted with small temples, religious statues and offerings increasing in number as the trails approach Yakuoin, an attractive temple dedicated to the 'kami' or spirits of the mountains. On a clear day you can also enjoy some great views of Mount Fuji. The hike to the summit of Takao-san can be done in 2-3 hours and is of only moderate difficulty. For those wanting a further challenge there are a number of more advanced hiking routes that head on from the summit of Mount Takao to other peaks deeper into the National Park. Again these are clearly marked and can be combined with the hike up Mount Takao to form a full day of more advanced hiking. Although popular with Japanese hikers, Mount Takao is virtually untouched by overseas visitors to Japan, so if you like the idea of getting off the beaten track then this might just be the day trip for you!

Shinkyo Bridge, Nikko

Day 14: Fly back to London Heathrow, with British Airways

Airport Bus from Shinjuku to Haneda Airport:  You will transfer by shuttle bus today to Tokyo Haneda Airport. The driver will wait for you in the lobby of the hotel with a sign with your name on it. Please note that as other people will be travelling on the same bus there may be a few pick-ups in Tokyo before you head to the airport (maximum of 3 other stops). Journey time is around 1 hour and this is a comfortable and easy way to make today's transfer.

Description

Tokyo 4 nights Shizuoka 2 nights Osaka 3 nights Hiroshima 2 nights Fukuoka 1 nights Busan 2 nights Jeju island 3 nights Seoul 2 nights

✈️ UK to Tokyo (4 Nights): You’ll begin your journey in Tokyo, Japan’s bustling capital where you’ll spend 4 nights exploring the city’s eclectic mix of modern and traditional architecture and attractions. Visit iconic sites including the Senso-ji Temple in historic Asakusa and the bustling area of Shibuya with its world-famous pedestrian crossing.  Don’t miss the opportunity to try the fresh seafood at Tsukiji Outer Market and take in panoramic views from the Tokyo Skytree skyscraper.

🚆 Tokyo to Shizuoka (2 Nights): From Tokyo, you’ll take the bullet train (Shinkansen) to Shizuoka, home to half of Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest peak which straddles both Shizuoka and neighbouring Yamanashi.  There are various ways to explore the mountain including walking trails, observation decks and guided tours.  The region is also famed for its tea plantations where you can explore the serene tea fields and taste some of the world’s finest green tea.

🚆 Shizuoka to Osaka (3 Nights): You’ll continue your journey by taking another bullet train to Osaka, known as the ‘kitchen of Japan’ due to its world class cuisine.  For a true taste of the city, head to Dotonbori’s neon-lit streets, where you’ll find delicious street food including takoyaki and okonomiyaki. Fugu, the potentially deadly pufferfish, is a delicacy here in Osaka and is often served as thinly sliced ‘fugu sashimi’. Beyond food, there are plenty of historic sites to visit including Osaka Castle which stands amid modern skyscrapers.

🚆 Osaka to Hiroshima (2 Nights):   Hop back on the bullet train for your next stop to Hiroshima, a city with a deep history and a strong commitment to peace. Visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum to learn about the atomic bombing during World War II. Hiroshima also offers beautiful parks including Shukkeien Garden.

🚆 Hiroshima to Fukuoka (1 Night): After Hiroshima, you’ll take the bullet train to Fukuoka for a night’s stay. While here, make sure you sample Hakata ramen, a famous local dish, and explore the bustling areas of Tenjin and Nakasu. If time allows, visit Ohori Park for a relaxing stroll around the lake.

🚢 Fukuoka to Busan (2 nights): You’ll embark on a short ferry trip across the Korea Strait to Busan and this is where the South Korean part of your adventure starts .  Here you can bask in the vibrant atmosphere of the Jagalchi Fish Market and relax on the sandy shores of Haeundae Beach, known for its bustling beachfront scene.  Also, make sure you head to the colourful and historic Gamcheon Culture Village, where narrow alleys are filled with colourful houses, sculptures and beautifully painted murals.

✈️Busan to Jeju Island (3 Nights):  Next we’ll whisk you off on a short plane flight to the beautiful volcanic Jeju island.  Located off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula and often referred to as ‘the Hawaii of South Korea’ Jeju island boasts breath-taking scenery, waterfalls and pristine beaches.  A highlight of Jeju island is the iconic Seongsan Ilchulbong, a volcanic crater that was formed over 5,000 years ago when an underwater volcano erupted.  Its name ‘Ilchulbong’ means ‘sunrise peak’ as it’s the best place on the island to watch the sunrise over the sea.  Other highlights include relaxing on the stunning beaches of Hyeopjae beach, Jungmun beach and Gwakji beach or exploring the lava formations at Manjanggul Cave or hiking to the top of Mount Hallasan.

✈️Busan to Seoul (2 Nights): For the final leg of your epic adventure, you’ll take another short flight to Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Immerse yourself in Seoul’s rich history by exploring the magnificent palaces of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, where you can witness the grandeur of Korean royalty. Stroll around the charming streets of Bukchon Hanok Village and the bustling markets of Myeongdong.  The food here is fabulous, so make sure you take in all the diverse culinary scene including the Korean barbecues and street food.

✈️ Seoul to UK:   Finally, we’ll take you to the airport ready for your return flight back home to the UK.

Reviews: rated excellent.

Friendly staff, great service. Sorted it all out for us, Chris was really helpful. Hopefully when we go in May we'll have no worries. Definitely use again

This is the first time I have used this company and I am so pleased I found them. I couldn’t find any multi centre trips to Andalucia until I came across this company. It’s exactly what I wanted. From my first contact with them until I booked the trip I couldn’t fault them. Kelly was very efficient, friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. I would certainly recommend this company.

This is our 2nd time booking with Gavin. He organised our 1st teip to Thailand and now it is time to go to Vietnam. It is so easy and straightforward with him. He knows his stuff, recommends great places to go/see and is always after a great price for his clients. We will continue to book with eShores for custom made holidays.

eShores is great and Andy is brilliant!

Found Kadie very efficient and helpful. This is the first time we have used eshores so hoping for a wonderful Greek Island hopping experience.

It was the team photo on eShores website that drew me to them - real people, who might actually care about planning my trip. I chose well - Dave Felton listened to what I wanted, and amazingly managed to work to my budget! Couldn't be happier with my booked trip to Australia in October. Thank you Dave.

I was referred to Nick by a friend and found him to be extremely helpful. He listened to my requirements and provided an excellent service. I would definitely recommend Nick to others.

Very quick and easy way to book a holiday online. Amendments were dealt with quickly and the whole experience was excellant. Loking forward to the holiday and hope that everything goes just as moothly!

Best of Korea & Japan

Japan and South Korea make a great pairing — though whether they’d agree about that is another question.

Like bickering siblings, Japan and Korea want you to know they’re unique — and they are. But at the same time neither can escape their shared history, which has shaped everything about them from their food and drink to their philosophy. This trip is about exploring similarities, noticing differences, and celebrating two distinct but equally fascinating cultures.

Transport in detail

In South Korea, transport will be by private car with a driver. In Japan, you’ll use the bullet train network to get around. Between the two, you’ll have a connecting flight (not included).

What's great

This itinerary explores classic destinations from different angles, combining well-known sights with lesser-known highlights

There’s a fantastic variety of destinations, both traditional and modern, spanning cities, countryside and coast

You’ll experience first-hand the subtle cultural differences between these close neighbours

Things to consider

Though we’ve included some more unusual experiences, all the destinations on this itinerary are well-trodden classics

Though we’ve included some day trips to get you into the countryside, this is a fairly city-focussed itinerary

The experience

Prefer to stick to one or the other? Check out the rest of our Japan and Korea itineraries — or have us design one just for you. Asia is your oyster.

Your adventure begins in Seoul, one of the most underrated capitals in Asia. A full day with a guide will help you get your bearings — perhaps including the traditional hanok district of Bukchon, the antique stores and sweet shops of back-alley Insadong, or street food and people-watching among the fashionistas in glitzy Myeongdong. The possibilities for your time here are endless, but be sure to make a stop at one of the city’s palaces (Gyeongbok is the biggest and most impressive) and check out sprawling Gwangjang Market, where you can eat your way through endless soondae sausage, bite-sized rice rolls and mung bean pancakes.

Statue at Bongeunsa Temple in Seoul

See (and hear!) the historical reenactment of the changing of the guards at Gyeongbok Palace

Visit a workshop and make your own wooden sujeo (chopstick & spoon set) to use on your travels

Make an optional day trip to Suwon, home of World Heritage Hwaseong Fortress

Ornate Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul

Your next destination will whisk you away from cutting-edge Seoul and back to the days of the Joseon Dynasty (or as close as you can get in modern Korea). Hahoe is a preserved clan village dating back to the 16th century, but it’s no museum: this is a living, working place with a sense of authenticity that’s often lacking in Korea’s reconstructed “folk villages”. Explore with a guide to demystify the local history and customs, then take the ferry across the river to Buyongdae Cliff for epic views. On your way back to Andong, stop at a World Heritage Confucian academy and the lovely Wolyeonggyo Bridge, arriving back in time to make the most of the city’s many bars and restaurants.

Wooden roof of building in Andong

Visit the Hahoe Mask Museum and learn how the locals keep their heritage alive through ritualistic mask dances and traditional festivals

See stunning views of Hahoe Village and the Nakdong River from Buyongdae Cliff

Spend a night in a traditional hanok house by the river, sleeping in a thatched cottage around a packed-earth courtyard

Andong-Hanok-house

It’s indisputable: Busan is the coolest kid in Korea. Kick off your exploration with an after-hours tour that’ll take in BIFF Square (the heart of Korean Hollywood), delicious street food, and markets brimming with K-Pop merch and knock-off Dolces. Then, go on a morning tour the slum-turned-Instagram-hotspot Gamcheon Village, with its jumble of steep, multicoloured alleys overflowing with sculptures, murals, craft shops, cafés, and amazing views. The rest of your time is yours to spend as you choose — whether that’s sipping a beer on Haeundae Beach, grabbing a famous giant hamburger at Gukje Market, or heading to the beautiful seaside temple of Haedong Yonggungsa.

Colourful houses on hillside in Busan, South Korea

See the mesmerising light show projected on Busan Tower at Yongdu Mountain Park

Explore the hidden shops and cafés of many-coloured Gamcheon Culture Village

Eat nakji octopus tentacles and sample fish soup at Busan’s famous Jakgalchi Market

Fish on display at fish market in Busan

You’ve tasted the best of Korea, now it’s time to see how Japan measures up. Where better to begin than Kyoto, the heart of Japanese traditional culture? Spend a full day with a guide exploring the hidden temples, shrines and gardens of this former imperial capital, then have tea with a real-life maiko (fledgling geisha): a privilege even few Japanese can boast. Kyoto has enough gold-clad temples, hidden moss gardens and bamboo groves to keep you busy for a lifetime, but if you do fancy a change of scenery it’s an easy day trip to the friendly deer in Nara, the street-food and nightlife of party-happy Osaka, or the wooded walking trails of nearby Mount Hiei.

Arashiyama bamboo forest

Enjoy an exclusive private audience with a maiko and learn about the “floating world” of the geisha

Explore the World Heritage temples and shrines of Kyoto with an expert guide to bring history to life

Escape the crowds with an optional day trip to traditional Nara — or embrace them with a day in the throng in buzzing Osaka

Geisha looking around corner and smiling at the camera

It may have begun life as a samurai’s hot-spring retreat, but Hakone today is a wacky wonderland of awesome art museums, upmarket resorts, pirate ship rides and Venetian glass forests (and that’s just for starters). A ryokan stay — complete with elaborate, traditional kaiseki feast — is de rigeuer, but the rest is up to you. Use the well-oiled network of boats, cablecars, funicular railways and buses to explore the region, passing through stunning mountain scenery swathed in forest, with Lake Ashi at its heart. Don’t miss the incredible Hakone Open-Air Museum — packed with interactive artworks, it’s often an unexpected highlight.

Ryokan hot spring

Take the cablecar to sulphur-spewing Owakudani, where visitors boil black eggs in the bubbling hot springs

Relax in a private hot-spring bath at your ryokan inn, where you’ll eat kaiseki food and sleep in tatami-mat rooms

If you’re lucky, get a fabulous view of Mount Fuji — most often sighted in the clear weather of autumn and winter

People walking through field with Mount Fuji in the background

Finally, Tokyo. What a place to conclude your trip. For us, it’s a contender for greatest city in the world. Throw yourself headlong into the local culture with an evening of food-sampling and bar-hopping with one of our resident connoisseurs — then spend a full day with a local guide to get the most out of the city. You might choose to spend it exploring the incense-wreathed temple and market stalls of traditional Asakusa, boat tripping on the Sumida River to hidden Hamarikyu Gardens, or exploring the blazing neon arcades and manga shops of Akihabara. Shops, bars, shrines, restaurants, art museums, karaoke: however you want to see out your trip; Tokyo's the place to do it in style.

Crowds of people at Shibuya Crossing

Visit vermilion Senso-ji Temple in the old-fashioned district of Asakusa or go tech-mad in neon-drenched Akihabara

Discover some of Tokyo’s lesser-known districts, such as the thrift shops of Shimokitazawa or the legendary ramen joints of Takadanobaba

Spend an evening izakaya-hopping through Shinjuku with one of our food-and-drink experts

Two sought-after countries. Twice the cultural cachet.

On the global pop culture scene, South Korea’s star has steadily risen in recent years. That’s thanks in part to sensationally popular Korean TV shows and films, foods, beauty trends, and pop bands that have taken the world by storm—and piqued travelers’ curiosity about the country in the process. Korea’s easterly neighbor, Japan, offers up rich history, cultural immersion, and impeccable hospitality that’s always in high demand. Spend two weeks getting to know these neighboring Asian nations, from their neon-lit cities to their rural villages to their serene, natural landscapes. If you want to venture a little farther off the beaten path, extend your tour and explore Hokkaido, Japan’s mountainous, northernmost island.

Your tour package includes

  • 13 nights in handpicked hotels
  • 13 breakfasts
  • 4 dinners with beer or wine

Included highlights

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul
  • Visiting with Buddhist monks at Bulguksa Temple

Board your overnight flight to Seoul today.

Welcome to South Korea! Settle in to your hotel this evening.

Meet up with your local guide and get to know South Korea’s capital city, Seoul. Situated in the northwestern reaches of South Korea, the thriving metropolis is home to modern skyscrapers, ornate Buddhist temples, grand palaces, and nearly 10 million residents. It’s also the perfect place to experience many of the fun and dynamic Korean cultural trends—from K-pop music to novelty foods—that have flourished around the world throughout the last decade.

  • Step inside the 14th-century, 7,700-room Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was built by King Taejo and is widely considered the most beautiful of Seoul’s five grand palaces.
  • Watch the Palace Royal Guard Changing Ceremony, a reenactment of the guard-changing procedure that took place during the Joseon dynasty; the ceremony features colorful reproduction costumes, as well as instruments and weapons, based on historical records.
  • Visit the National Folk Museum of Korea to learn about traditional ways of life, which are rapidly disappearing as a result of modernization and urbanization.
  • Enter bustling Gwangjang Market, the city’s oldest traditional market, where you’ll find everything from street food to silks to hanbok—traditional Korean clothing whose origins date back more than 2,000 years.
  • Enjoy a tasting of the market’s not-to-be-missed street food, followed by free time to shop and explore on your own.
  • Get to know your fellow travelers over an included welcome lunch, served with beer or wine.

Board a high-speed bullet train bound for the city of Gyeongju. Often referred to as the “museum without walls,” Gyeongju is home to several impressive archaeological sites and three UNESCO World Heritage sites.

  • Climb aboard your coach for a short transfer to Bulguksa Temple; the treasured head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was established on the slopes of Mount Toham in the eighth century.
  • Explore the temple with a monk as your guide, then choose to make prayer beads or a lotus flower lantern.

Sit down with your group this evening for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Spend the morning exploring the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, the final resting place of nobility of the Silla Kingdom, or Golden Kingdom, which ruled from 57 B.C.–935 A.D. You’ll have a chance to enter one of its burial mounds and view some of the 11,000 artifacts and royal crowns that showcase the lavish lifestyles of Korean royalty.

Later, travel to the mountainous, seaside city of Busan, where you’ll visit the United Nations Memorial Cemetery. Learn about the history and impact of the Korean War, and pay your respects to those buried in the cemetery.

Enjoy an included dinner this evening served with beer or wine.

Meet up with a local guide to explore Busan, a dynamic port city at the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. Home to roughly 3.5 million people, Busan is the country’s second-largest city. Here, visitors will find a little bit of everything, from bustling city streets to scenic beaches to excellent restaurants.

  • Pass through the heart of the city to popular Yongdusan Park and make a photo stop at its nearly 400-foot-tall Busan Tower, which features an observation deck and cafe.

  • Visit the eighth-century Kushida-jinja Shrine, whose highlights include a fountain where people pray for eternal youth.

Head to a local restaurant this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Set out to explore the area, which was Japan’s early gateway to trade with the West, as well as the target of an atomic bombing by the United States in 1945. Today, the area’s unspoiled beaches and islands attract swimmers, divers, and sea kayakers.

  • Visit Nagasaki Peace Park, which serves as both a symbol of hope and a reminder of the horrors of war.
  • Explore the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum’s exhibits, which shed light on the city’s devastating history and post-war life.
  • Sit down for an included lunch this afternoon at a local restaurant.
  • Set off on a walking tour through the city, including its cosmopolitan center, as well as historic neighborhoods, like Dejima, which was constructed in the 17th century as a man-made island to segregate Portuguese residents from the Japanese population.

Board a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto this morning. Then, get to know the city that served as the capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years and is still considered its spiritual capital.

  • Start in western Kyoto’s historic Arashiyama district, which is known for its temples, shrines, and stunning natural beauty.

  • Take in views of the rolling, tree-covered hills that surround the Hozu River.

Wander through the serene grounds, pay your respects, and don't miss the Meiji Jingu Inner Garden for seasonal gardens and historical insights. Next, head to the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, where you can admire the architectural grandeur and beauty of the East Garden, even though access to the inner palace is restricted. Enjoy a leisurely walk and capture the beauty of the Nijubashi Bridge.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the traditional charm of Asakusa. Explore Nakamise-dori's bustling shops, sample delectable street food, and visit the iconic Senso-ji Temple. Meander through the historic Asakusa district with its nostalgic alleys and architecture. Cap off your day at the Tokyo Skytree, marveling at the modern engineering marvel and breathtaking views of Tokyo's skyline. The Skytree offers a mesmerizing perspective of the city.

Day 3 Tokyo Nikko Tokyo

We’ll leave Tokyo this morning after breakfast and head north to Nikko, one of Japan’s most famous mountain towns.

Your journey begins at Nikko Toshogu, an exquisite Shinto shrine complex nestled in the scenic mountains. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its elaborate and intricate architecture, housing the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Explore the ornate buildings, vibrant carvings, and serene surroundings, immersing yourself in Japanese history and spirituality. Be sure to witness the mesmerizing Yomeimon Gate, a true masterpiece of craftsmanship.

Next, venture to the picturesque Lake Chūzenji, a serene and pristine mountain lake surrounded by lush forests. The shimmering waters offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. We then visit the nearby Kegon Falls, one of Japan's most famous waterfalls, plunging dramatically from a rocky precipice into the crystal-clear pool below. Marvel at the sheer power and beauty of nature, and perhaps capture this magnificent sight with your camera to create lasting memories of your Nikko adventure.

Day 4 Tokyo

Today is a full free day in Tokyo. There is no end to the spectacular sightseeing and activities available to you, as Tokyo truly has something for everyone. Take as much time as you like to relax at your leisure, explore the city, shop for souvenirs and eat the delectable cuisine. Be sure to ask your hotel concierge for recommendations on more must-see spots around the city.

Alternatively, join one of the many free walking tours on offer in Tokyo.

Day 5 Tokyo Yokohama Embark Celebrity Millennium

After breakfast, enjoy a morning at leisure in Tokyo. At the appropriate time, you will be transferred from your hotel to the Yokohama cruise port to embark on your 12-night exploration of Japan and South Korea.

During a cruise to Japan with Celebrity, you'll visit extraordinary cities with an ancient culture that seamlessly blends with the country’s ultra-modern architecture and lifestyle. Japan cruises offer you the chance to discover captivating Shinto shrines, stroll through meticulously-planned formal gardens, savour the freshest sushi, and visit some of the world's most beautiful mountain scenery.

You will set sail at 7pm this evening.

Ports of call may vary cruise to cruise based on ship schedules.

Day 6 Mt Fuji (Shimizu)

On clear days, particularly in winter, Mount Fuji (Fuji-san in Japanese) is visible from as far as Tokyo, 60 miles away. When Japan's highest mountain is capped with snow, it's a picture-postcard perfect volcanic cone. One of the best-known symbols of Japan, this iconic mountain has been considered sacred since ancient times and was even forbidden to women until the early 1900s.

There is an extensive range of shore excursions on offer today. You may wish to head deep into Hakone National Park and get up close to Mount Fuji, or stay nearer to port and explore Shizuoka City with an expert local guide.

In port from 7am to 7pm.

Day 7 At Sea

While at sea, take the time to recharge before the next adventure. Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa, taste the delicacies or explore the venues on-board, until we arrive at the next amazing destination.

Day 8 Kyoto (Osaka)

There are so many experiences on offer in the Osaka and Kyoto region. Perhaps visit Osaka Aquarium, one of the world’s largest aquariums which has over 580 species of sea life on display, or Universal Studios Japan, the company’s first theme park outside of the U.S. Kyoto served as the nation’s capital for more than 1000 years and is home to 17 different World Heritage Sites including Kiyomizudera Temple and Heian Jingu Shrine.

The ship will remain in port overnight.

Day 9 Kyoto (Osaka)

After breakfast on board, why not head out to further explore Osaka, Kyoto or surrounds. Our suggestion is to explore mystical Kyoto and three of its most beautiful temples and shrines, with one summoning the "courage" of visitors. Following the 90-minute journey to Kyoto, first stop at Fushimi-inari Taisha, guarded by red torii gates that form a virtual tunnel. Then visit Ryoanji Temple, known for its stone garden. Marvel at Hojo Garden's Zen expression before moving on to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Learn of its unique mortise and joint pillar and beam structure, which used no nails. Lunch is Japanese-style.

You will depart from Osaka at 3pm today.

Day 10 Hiroshima

While paying tribute to the infamous nuclear attack that destroyed the city in 1945, Hiroshima is now defined as a beacon of peace and prides itself on its exceptional natural beauty. See more than 300 cherry blossom trees in bloom at Peace Memorial Park, journey to the breathtaking Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island, and take time to sample "okonomiyaki"—a delicious example of Japanese soul food.

In port from 1pm to 10pm.

Day 11 At Sea

Enjoy another day at sea today, which means you can relax and enjoy all that your ship has to offer. Have a spa massage, relax by the pool, or dine in one of the exciting restaurants.

Day 12 Busan, South Korea

It is Busan's premier trading port, adjacent to the Korean Straits and Japan, that makes it an international metropolis but its beautiful sea vistas that make it a charming place to unwind. Experience the serenity of Beomeo-sa Temple, climb the Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park and rejuvenate at Hushimchung Spa.

In port from 8am to 6pm.

Day 13 At Sea

Wine and dine in reimagined restaurants and lounges, including the main dining room, Oceanview Café, Sunset Bar, and Rendezvous Lounge. Surrender your senses in the newly redesigned spa. Shop in new retail boutiques. The choice is yours.

Day 14 Hakodate

A port city on the island of Hokkaido, Hakodate is best known for the spectacular views and the area's delicious, fresh seafood, sushi, squid, and ramen. From the top of Mount Hakodate, you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the city surrounded by the ocean. You can reach the summit by hiking trail, cable car, or auto. The former Goryōkaku Fort, Japan's first Western style fortress, is now used as a public park and is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. The park also features the tall, white Goryōkaku Tower that offers a panoramic view of the park, including mainland Japan across the Tsugaru Strait on clear days. Hakodate is literally a town of hot springs, and it even offers steamy outdoor footbaths to pedestrians.

In port from 10:30am to 8pm.

Day 15 Aomori

Aomori Port, the capital of Aomori prefecture, is located on Mutsu Bay, at the northern tip of Honshu. Here, nature and culture fuse as one. The Shirakami Mountains, which embrace the world's largest virgin forest of beech trees, have been awarded a World Heritage Site designation. Reminders of ancient times abound throughout Aomori Port as well, and you can also indulge in the serene atmosphere of the Sannai-Maruyama Ruins, Japan's largest, which are said to have been established around 4,000 to 5,000 BC. The summer brings the city’s most beloved Nebuta Matsuri Festival, which features enormous lantern floats, taiko drums, and dancers that parade the downtown streets. Stroll Aomori’s premiere Shinsen Ichiba seafood market where restaurateurs hand-pick fresh produce then slurp up delicious ramen noodles at one of its counter restaurants.

Day 16 At Sea

Enjoy your final day at sea on this fascinating adventure. Meet your new friends in the Rendezvous Lounge, or take in the passing views from the Sky Lounge.

Learn more about South Korea

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighbouring countries in Asia with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasises respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernised culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a similar capital economic standing to countries such as the United States, Japan and various countries in Western Europe.

Some notable districts/destinations where you can shop ‘til you drop include:

Top 5 culinary delicacies of South Korea

But most people don't eat these fermented vegetables for health reasons - it's the uniquely, tasty flavour and versatility that makes kimchi so popular in Korean cooking.

These delicious, savoury pancakes are a standard of Korean cuisine. With hundreds of different varieties, jeon can be served with red meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables, tofu and even edible flowers.

Similar to sushi, these highly popular rice-based morsels feature fish, beef or crab, wrapped in seaweed with pickled or fresh vegetables. Available all over Korea, they are the perfect snack on the run or quick, cheap lunch to enjoy between sightseeing.

Arriving in Korea by the way of Mongolia, mandu are essentially boiled, steamed or pan-fried dumplings. A cheap, street food favourite, mandu can be filled with everything from pheasant to tofu, cucumber, beef and beyond.
