One of the most popular tourist sites is Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh, which is located in the Kangra district and in the suburbs of the town of Dharamshala. Mcleodganj is also frequently referred to as the Little Lhasa due to the large number of Tibetans who settled here when China invaded their country. Notable is the fact that the exiled government of Tibet solely has its headquarters in Mcleodganj.

Speaking of Mcleodganj tourism, this lovely little settlement is only 3 kilometres from Dharamshala and receives a large number of visitors each year. People travel to this holy tiny town/hill station in the Himalayas for a variety of reasons, including spirituality, service opportunities, Himalayan experiences and adventures, and much additional sightseeing, photo and trip options.

Places to visit Mcleodganj

Bhagsu falls.

Perhaps the most well-known tourist destination in Dharamshala, the Bhagsu Waterfall draws visitors looking to take in the splendours of nature and spend some quiet time in solitude. The Bhagsunag Waterfall is the perfect place for a picnic with family and friends because it is situated on the main route that connects Mcleodganj and Dharamshala. The well-known Bhagsunath Temple is the main draw here.

Namgyal Monastery

The Namgyal Monastery in Mcleodganj, the largest Tibetan temple outside of Tibet, is thought to be the place where the Dalai Lama, the head of the Tibetan people, resides. Even people who are not inclined towards this faith can be drawn in by the atmosphere and serenity that this location fosters in the minds of its guests. Since the Namgyal Monastery is the 14th Dalai Lama’s personal monastery, it is frequently referred to as “Dalai Lama’s Temple.”

Bhagsunag Temple

The Bhagsunag Temple is one of the oldest ancient temples and is situated approximately 3 kilometres from Mcleodganj. It is surrounded by magnificent lakes and lush vegetation. The local Gorkha and Hindu communities hold a great regard for this temple, also known as Bhagsunath Temple. The two pools that surround the shrine are revered and thought to possess amazing healing properties.

An accessible trip into the beautiful Himalayas is available in Himachal Pradesh’s Triund. At a height of 2828 metres, just a few kilometres from Dharamshala, it is the ideal location for trekking, with fantastic paths providing picturesque views of the entire Kangra Valley. Triund is a short and easy trek away. Either McLeodganj or Dharamkot, which is two kilometres to the north of McLeodganj, might be used for this. The first half of the hike is a steadily inclining walk, and the final two kilometres from Snowline Cafe to Triund feature a vertical ascent. An excellent reason to camp here at night is the view of the sunset from Triund.

How To Reach Mcleodganj

The closest wide gauge railroad station is in Pathankot, just 90 kilometres from Mcleodganj, which is close to the boundary of Punjab and Himachal. Mcloedganj is 6-7 hours from Chandigarh and overnight from New Delhi. Travellers can easily use buses and taxis to get to Mcleodganj from that location. The most affordable and respectably pleasant method to go to Mcleodganj is on one of the buses operated by Himachal State Buses, which travel to the town from several locations throughout the state, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.

How to travel via air to Mcleodganj

Gaggal, which is located around 30 kilometres from Mcleodganj, is the closest airport. You can hire taxis from here to get to Mcleodganj. Chandigarh, which is connected to all of India’s main airports, is the closest major airport. The closest international airport is in Delhi, which has frequent flights and good connections worldwide.

Mcleodganj is 146 kilometres from the closest airport, Jammu.

How to drive to Mcleodganj

The main town of Dharamshala, which is located 9 kilometres before Mcleodganj, can be reached from New Delhi by overnight bus. Regular bus service from Kashmiri Gate ISBT Delhi is provided by Himachal Roadways and Himachal Tourism. There are frequent local buses that travel to Mcleodganj from Dharamshala, or you can hire a shared taxi.

How to get via rail to Mcleodganj

The closest railroad station to Mcleodganj is Kangra Mandir, which is only approximately 25 kilometres away. The closest broad gauge railroad station is 90 kilometres distant in Pathankot. From there, taxis and buses are easily accessible.

The best way to see McLeodganj is on foot. If you need to go relatively greater distances, you can also use rikshaws.

Best time to visit Mcleodganj

The winter and summer months, from October to February and from March to June, respectively, are the finest times to visit Mcleod Ganj. The area has pleasant summers with temperatures about 25°C and frigid, icy winters with temperatures ranging from -1°C to 9°C. Given that the area has significant annual rainfall, monsoons are not particularly advised. Due to the high rains in July and August, it is better to avoid them.

Mcleodganj is an almost unexpected paradise for foodies, dominated by a variety of authentic Tibetan cuisine, dotted with bakeries selling treats at affordable prices, a Lebanese surprise, a delicious dash of Italian food, a rather French brunch, and a pampered North-Indian meal with Parathas and Tandoori delicacies. You can choose from a range of Momos, Thukpa, Tingmo, and Bakleb (a Tibetan take on “Samosas”) because to the virtually ubiquitous impact of Tibetan cuisine on the local cuisine. This restaurant’s honey ginger lemon tea, a particularly energising beverage, is another specialty. Do savour and perhaps even bring home treats like cakes, chocolate mousse, waffles, and lemon tarts. Additionally, the city offers some of the best and most mouthwatering Italian specialties.
