GUWAHATI TO SHILLONG TO CHERRAPUNJI (SOHRA)- A Quick Guide

Meghalaya , Northeast India

Guwahati to Shillong to Cherrapunjee

Last Updated on: Jul 23, 2021

About this Blog: This blog is about a quick guide on how to get from Guwahati to Shillong and Cherrapunji. This guide focuses on getting from Guwahati to Shillong and Cherrapunji by public transport or by car. If you are driving your own car, scroll down for a route map.

Living root bridges, waterfalls, caves, canyons, clouds and bountiful nature – Meghalaya is the destination that has it all. And the best thing is that you can explore all these within a week. If you are on budget and want to go for a backpacking trip to Meghalaya , then you are at the right place. Here is a quick guide on how to travel from Guwahati to Shillong and to Cherrapunji. We will also provide a tentative itinerary for your Meghalaya trip that can be easily done on a budget.

Nohkalikai Falls Sohra Meghalaya

Why should you read this Guide from Guwahati to Shillong to Cherrapunji?

We have explored the Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya quite well. Not only have we travelled in shared and public transport in Meghalaya, but also travelled in reserved cars. In short, after travelling to all the major tourist spots of Meghalaya as well as a number of offbeat destinations, we have profound knowledge about the places, tourist attractions and transport facilities of the state. Having said that, we are yet to explore the Garo Hills properly. We have only visited Tura during the 100 Drums Wangala Festival , a harvest festival of the Garos.

How to get from Guwahati to Shillong by public transport?

The best way to get from Guwahati to Shillong by public transport is by taking a shared sumo (jeeps) or car. If you are arriving at Guwahati by train, then you will get shared sumos and cars right outside the railway station.

Take the stairs towards Platform No 7 and exit towards Paltan Bazar. Just outside the Railway station is the ASTC Bus Stand. If you want to take a shared Sumo, then you will find them near one of the entry gates of the Bus stand. A lot of sumo drivers and car drivers will approach you. If you are coming for the first time, then ask a few of them about the fare and then decide. These sumos take 10 passengers and only leave when the sumo is filled up. So if you end up getting on an empty sumo, then you might have to wait for a longer time.

Sumo Fare is about INR 200 to 250 per person.

You will also get shared cars from Guwahati to Shillong as well. Usually, Maruti Swift and Tata Indica are found. You will get the shared cars just outside the Guwahati Railway Station at Paltan Bazar. Travelling from Guwahati to Shillong by these cars is more comfortable than by the sumos.

The Fare by car is INR 300 – 400 per person.

Shared sumos and cars from Guwahati to Shillong are also available from Khanapara Stand. You can reach Khanapara from any part of Guwahati by taking a local bus or auto.

If you arrive at Guwahati by flight, then it is better for you to go to Khanapara Stand and then take shared sumo or car to Shillong. Here again, you will be approached by a lot of sumo and car drivers. The advice remains the same.

Meghlaya roads - the signpost showing the distance in our Meghalaya bike trip

Buses from Guwahati to Shillong

The Meghalaya Tourism Website does mention that buses run by ASTC and MTC are both available from ISBT Guwahati. I think there are a few buses running from Guwahati to Shillong, but we never relied on bus service. We found the shared sumo and cars to be more comfortable and reliable options of travelling from Guwahati to Shillong.

Guwahati to Shillong by reserved car

You can also hire an entire cab for your journey from Guwahati to Shillong. You will get the cabs from the same places where you get the shared ones, i.e. outside the railway station, Khanapara and even ISBT. A hired car from Guwahati to Shillong will take about INR 1700-1800.

You can also book Ola/Uber Outstation from Guwahati to Shillong. Ola/Uber runs in Guwahati , but not in Shillong and Cherrapunji.

If you are hiring a cab for getting to Shillong from Guwahati, then you can ask the driver to to see the major attractions stop on the way. Between Guwahati to Shillong, the Umiam Lake or the Badapani is the main place where you can make a stop.

There are a couple of places in Shillong where the shared sumo or cars can drop you. The cars will usually drop you at Police Bazaar, the main centre of Shillong. The Sumos, on the other hand, usually drop at the Anjali Stand.

Hello Agni &Amrita! Loved your work. Very informative indeed. I am planning a Shillong trip in April 2023. Could you please share some details where to get the Bike Rentals? Awaiting your reply!

Hello Sandeep. Thank you for reading our blog. You will get several bike rentals in Shillong town itself.

Hi guys Very informative and useful blog gives a complete picture. Planning to visit in May 23 with family and can you suggest Hotels at Shillong and is it possible to cover Mawlynnong and Dawki in one day from Shillong. Awaiting for your reply. Great day.

Hello! Thank you for reading our blog. There are several hotels in Shillong at Police Bazar area. That is one of the best places to stay. It is also possible to do a day trip to Mawlynnong and Dawki from Shillong. Meghalaya Tourism conducts such trip if there are sufficient bookings. There counter is at Police Bazar.

This article is extremely helpful. Thank you for writing it in detail. I’m travelling solo for approx one month in Meghalaya. As expected, il be relying mostly on public transport. If possible can you suggest basic homestays/hostels around shillong. Also, if you can provide details on Krem Liat Prah it will be great. Thanks for reading out. Looking forward to your response 🙂

Hello Dnyaneshree! Thank you for stopping by our blog. I had stayed at Isabella Travellers Homestay in Shillong and found it clean and economical. It also had decent wifi connection, in case you wanted to work. its located in Laitumkhrah. As for Krem Liat Prah, please contact us over mail with your queries. We would be happy to help! Thanks again.

Hey guys, first of all great insight, can u cut down my trip to 4 days itinerary, coz I m short on time . I will reach on 26.1.23 and my returning rain is on 29.1.23. Most important I have 2 kids . Awaiting your revert.

👍 on your blogs.

Hello Sandeep! Can you please send us a mail on info [@] taleof2backpackers [.] com with your journey details. We will revert back on that. If you have less days in hand, then stay at Shillong. Explore Shillong for a day and take a day trip to Cherrapunjee on another day.

Hi Agni & Amrita,

Love your website and must say one of the morst informative one, in this era, that has not only what you enjoyed but also otrhe details like where, when and how much. We are keen to travel in meghalaya this december but are loath to organsie a package tour. have bene packpackers for all out life. Can you give us an idea of Is it easy to organise cars when needed wihtin Shillong/Cheerpunji? How much does it cost for a share taxi? Can we do trips around Cherrapunji like nagiarat, and the otehr waterfalls without a private vehicle? If we decied to hire motarbikes what are the conditions? The reason I ask is that we no longer have indina citizenship and only have a OCI ( overases citizen of India) card 🙂 Looking forward to your replies. Thanks Padma

Hello Padma! Nice to hear from you. There is no need for packaged tour for Meghalaya. You will get ample cars in Shillong or Cherrapunjee for your travel purposes. For local sightseeing in both Shillong and Cherrapunjee, you have to either hire a cab or a motorcycle. Since the places are not within walking distances and travelling by buses and local cars will be time consuming and confusing as well. The conditions of bikes are fine. At least they were well maintained when we did a bike trip. Please do insist for 2 helmets if you are taking a pillion. Hope this answers your quesries. Thanks.

This is an excellent write up. I am a solo traveller and would join a group or any solo for a convenient tour. Thanks in advance.

It is very informative and hotels for all range is also to be covered.

Sure, we will keep that in mind. Thank you for the comment.

Hello you guys! It was super helpful as I am planning my first solotrip to Guwahati in March’22 ! Hope things will go smoothly ☺️

Hello Agni and Amrita You write useful information for visiting Cherapunji.

I have used their services multiple times in the past 3-4 years. I felt their services are both convenient and affordable. I have recently used their VISA services to get a Schengen tourist visa. If you are looking out for VISA-related services for European and Asian countries, I endorse their Guwahati
We did New Zealand and French Polynesia visa through Pushpak travels and there Ms Arvinder assisted us.
