The Pyramids of Giza are easy to access from Egypt's capital and largest city, Cairo, which is equally fascinating to visit. Set on the banks of the Nile River, Cairo is a chaotic and buzzy place that appears to never slow down, even in the dead of night.

Here, ancient history meets a modern metropolis. A highlight of Cairo is a visit to the Egyptian Museum .

For the best views of the falls in full, you'll want to explore the Zimbabwe side , where you can follow a walking trail to various viewpoints (expect to get drenched when the water volume is high).

On the Zambia side , you can get very close to the falls themselves and, if you're brave enough, even take a dip in Devil's Pool , which literally sits at the top of the falls before they tumble down, down, down. Both sides have lodging options, as well as restaurants.

Beautiful Marrakesh in Morocco makes for the perfect introduction to this fascinating North African country, which can actually be accessed via an overnight ferry from southern Spain.

Marrakesh is located in western Morocco and is the country's fourth-largest city and home. The walled Medina here dates back to the Berber Empire. Spend a day sightseeing, wandering its maze-like streets filled with souks (marketplaces) selling everything from spices to jewelry to brightly colored traditional clothing and slippers.

With a Moorish minaret that is part of the city skyline, Koutoubia Mosque is one of the top attractions in Marrakesh , dating back to the 12th century.

Located in southwest Africa, Namibia is a one-of-a-kind destination that is often overlooked when planning trips to the continent. It shouldn't be. The country is chock-full of adventures and landscapes you won't find anywhere else on the continent, including the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei .

Part of Namib-Naukluft National Park , Sossusvlei is a giant, flat salt pan surrounded by a sea of red and orange sand that has been sculpted into an otherworldly landscape of towering dunes and desolate valleys sprinkled with petrified dead trees. It is especially spectacular at first light, when the rising sun brings the dunes into focus and makes them glow.

Other major attractions in Namibia include the Skeleton Coast , named for the skeletons of wrecked ships that crashed along the misty Atlantic Coastline here, and Etosha National Park , one of Africa's best game reserves .

Facing towards Europe's Mediterranean coastline, Tunisia is Africa's most northerly country. It is a gorgeous, sun-soaked destination, where European and Arab influences blend together.

Home to a beautiful stretch of beaches on the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia is a popular vacation destination for Europeans seeking some winter sun. The island Djerba is a perfect spot to indulge.

Afterwards, venture into the Sahara Desert for more mesmerizing scenery. The desert covers much of Tunisia's interior, but its most stunning section is known as the Grand Erg Oriental . With an elevation of 19,341 feet, Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro ("Kili" for short) is Africa's highest mountain and also holds the world record for the highest single freestanding mountain (it isn't part of a range). Rising from the plains of the Serengeti, it is a dormant volcano and creates a stunning backdrop for wildlife safaris in the region.

Most people visit Kili to climb to its summit. It is especially popular because the trek involves no rock climbing expertise or mountaineering equipment.

You also won't face the extreme weather challenges of climbing other continents' highest peaks, like Mt. Everest. You will need to be in good shape and adjusted to the altitude. The trek to the top takes a minimum of six days, and you will need to go on a guided excursion.

South Africa's Kruger National Park is one of Africa's oldest conservation areas and a top safari destination on the continent .

This vast park, which actually extends into Mozambique to the east, is home to South Africa's most diverse wildlife population. It is also surrounded by upscale private reserves, like Sabi Sands Game Reserve, which animals can cross into and out of at will.

Kruger is also a safari destination within reach for many different budgets. As a national park, visitors can actually explore Kruger on self-drive safaris and then camp or stay in national park lodges.

Every year, millions of wildebeest and other hoofed animals like zebra and gazelles migrate between Tanzania's Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya in what has become known as the Great Migration. The most dangerous part of this journey is crossing the Mara River , where many of the grazing animals get picked off by hungry lions and other predators.

The crossing usually happens between July and August, but the timing can change with the year. Watching the Great Migration in real time is a dream for many wildlife enthusiasts, who plan safaris to this part of Kenya to coincide with it.

Created about 2.5 million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest inactive, unfilled, and unbroken volcanic caldera on the planet. Considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World (Victoria Falls is another), it is home to thousands of animals and is a top safari destination in Tanzania.

It is also on one end of the Great Migration route , mentioned above, and during this time of year, massive herds of wildebeests, zebras, and other grazing animals can be seen here.

Guests stay at lodges perched on the edge of the crater's rim and then descend down for day long wildlife drives.

All of the Big 5 African animals (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo) can be seen down here, but one species you won't see on the crater floor are giraffes. This is because they find the rocky descent too difficult, and there are few trees. This lack of trees also makes it very easy to spot wildlife while on safari, including the big cats.

Off the Mozambican coastline in the Indian Ocean, the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine Park is home to a group of islands with some of the more beautiful beaches in Africa .

Bazaruto Island is the main destination and offers a range of accommodations, from budget to luxury. But there are also deserted islands and others that are home to just one hotel or two.

Besides brilliant white-sand beaches backed by coconut palms and sand dunes, these islands are also famous for their excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities. There is a thriving coral reef system protected by the park, and the turquoise water is warm and clear.

Botswana, in southern Africa, is another legendary safari destination.

In the northern portion of the country, the Okavango Delta is a top attraction. This large inland river delta floods during the rainy season and becomes a unique safari experience. That's when you'll get to explore the river in a dugout canoe, paddling past hippos and crocodiles while keeping your eyes peeled for elephants, giraffe, and other animals who come to the river to drink.

The Moremi Game Reserve covers a large section of the Okavango Delta and is where many upscale safari lodges are located. Maun is the gateway town to the delta, and this is a good place to organize more budget-focused canoe and land safaris.

Spanning three countries, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, Lake Malawi is the third-largest lake on the African continent at 29,600 square kilometers. It's part of the African Great Lake system, and its age is estimated at about one or two million years.

The majority of tourists visit the Malawi side of the lake, which is called Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique.

One interesting fact about Lake Malawi is that it is home to more kinds of fish than any other lake on Earth ! Needless to say, fishing is very popular here.

On Kenya's Swahili Coast, Watamu is the perfect town for a beach vacation. The Indian Ocean here is stunning—think turquoise, aquamarine, and emerald hues with sugar-white-sand beaches and an underwater world to explore.

Unlike beaches in South Africa, the water here stays warm enough to swim comfortably all year. And, with near-constant trade wind breezes, it never gets too oppressively hot, and it's also one of the hottest kitesurfing destinations in Africa .

The sunsets are also stellar here, especially when witnessed from the deck at Lichthaus, which has west-facing hammocks, DJs spinning in summer, and a food menu.

Watamu is a small village, and lodging is spread out over a number of miles on the coastline. It is easy to get between places by bodu bodu (a local motorbike taxi that costs around $1 per ride).

The most luxurious place to stay in town is Hemingways Watamu . Right on the beach, it offers accommodation in rooms, suites and residences. The residences are especially luxe.

They have up to two bedrooms, are done-up in gorgeous modern décor, come with full kitchens, and feature walls of windows. Beds are draped in mosquito nets so you can sleep with the windows open to hear the ocean. The food at the house restaurant is also excellent.

Another option, which is very popular with couples and groups of friends (although families are welcome as well), is Temple Point Resort . It also has a beachfront location and is spread across lushly landscaped grounds.

The public spaces here are wonderful, and there is even a room dedicated for remote working. The restaurant serves an international menu with excellent pasta dishes. Accommodation is in charming bungalows with whitewashed décor, and each has a unique look. The on-site dive center can take you swimming with whale sharks or to thriving coral reefs.

24. Ait Benhaddou (Morocco) [SEE MAP]

On the edge of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is the incredible city of Ait Benhaddou. Also known as Mud Brick City, Ait Benhaddou is an ancient fortified stop that was a haven for travelers going between the Sahara and the city of Marrakesh. On a visit to Ait Benhaddou, you can tour the mud buildings, explore the ancient Granary at the top of the hilltop city and even tour the Mausoleum of Ben-Haddou.

23. Isalo National Park (Madagascar) [SEE MAP]

Just off the coast of Mozambique, and in the waters of the Indian Ocean, is the island of Madagascar. While the island nation has a lot to do, see and explore, a highlight is undoubtedly the Isalo National Park. Within the park, you will have access to a wide range of terrain types. Be prepared to spot enormous canyons, lush palm-tree oases and even unique sandstone formations. The best way to see Isalo National Park is on a guided trek, and many people opt for overnight camping to enhance the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

22. Zanzibar (Tanzania) [SEE MAP]

The archipelago off the coast of Tanzania is semi-autonomous, and it is a truly unique destination in Africa. Zanzibar boasts an interesting blend of architecture, and you’ll find Arabic, Middle Eastern, Moorish and Indian styles represented in its cities. There are many world-class beaches to choose from, and Zanzibar also boasts a very vibrant and well-preserved history. Be sure to spend time in the capital city of Stone Town, home to several fantastic museums and the 17th century Old Fort.

21. Djenne (Mali) [SEE MAP]

Probably the most historically and architecturally interesting city in all of Mali is Djenne. The city served as an important element of the trans-Saharan gold trade, and it is still a regional hub thanks to its impressive weekly market that gathers residents from all the surrounding areas. By far the most amazing landmark in the city, however, is the Great Mosque, which is the largest mud brick building in the world. The Islamic Mosque dates back to the 13th century, although it wasn’t officially completed until 1907.

20. Lake Malawi (Malawi, Tanzania & Mozambique) [SEE MAP]

One of the largest bodies of water in Africa is Lake Malawi. As the name suggests, much of the lake is within the borders of Malawi, but it also stretches into the countries of Tanzania and Mozambique. If you want to see Lake Malawi, one of the best ways to do so is with a visit to the Lake Malawi National Park, located on the southern end of the lake itself. There are miles of hiking available in the park, not to mention countless vantage points where you can admire the lake and take spectacular photographs.

19. Etosha National Park (Namibia) [SEE MAP]

The second largest game reserve in Namibia is the Etosha National Park. It was created around the Etosha salt pan, which many animals gravitate to. As a result, the national park is a spectacular spot for seeing wildlife. Be sure to bring along binoculars, because you’ll be able to see zebras, springbok, lions, giraffes, elephants and more. Three rest camps are designated for visitor accommodation, allowing you to see these amazing animals 24/7.

18. Lalibela (Ethiopia) [SEE MAP]

The city of Lalibela in Ethiopia is known as a city of pilgrimage. Lalibela boasts 11 monolithic, rock-cut churches, each of which is fascinating to explore. Most residents are Egyptian Orthodox Christian, and most of the churches were constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries. If you only have time for a tour of one church in Lalibela, make it Bet Giyorgis, which is shaped like a cross and carved entirely from rock in a spectacular fashion.

17. Virunga National Park (DR Congo) [SEE MAP]

Near the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and just minutes away from Uganda, is the Virunga National Park. Virunga was founded in 1925 by the Belgian King Albert, and it was Africa’s very first national park. While poaching was a serious problem in the park in the past, now it is a growing tourism destination. The Virunga National Park is most famous for its mountain gorillas, but you can also see the Tongo chimpanzees or even trek to the summit of the Nyiragongo Volcano to see the world’s largest lava lake glowing.

16. Fish River Canyon (Namibia) [SEE MAP]

The incredible Fish River Canyon in Southern Namibia is one of the world’s largest canyons, and it is a spectacular, breathtaking scene to behold. As one of the Natural Wonders of Africa, Fish River Canyon is one of the nation’s most popular attractions. You can trek along the Fish River Canyon Trail if you’re up for adventure, or you can take a scenic overhead flight to admire the multicolored rock canyon contrasted with the bright blue water of the river.

15. Merzouga (Morocco) [SEE MAP]

While Merzouga is a small village, it is a popular destination for travelers in Morocco . Located in the Sahara Desert, Merzouga is surrounded by enormous sand dunes known as the Erg Chebbi. Much of the local population is Berber, a group that is traditionally nomadic. If you visit, you can join a camel safari into the dunes to see the traditional Berber lifestyle. In addition to checking out the nomadic desert lifestyle, you can try birdwatching in the spring, when a wide range of birds migrate through the area.

14. Praslin (Seychelles) [SEE MAP]

The second largest of the tropical islands that make up the Seychelles , located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, is Praslin. The island is dotted with a few luxury resorts, but the two main attractions on the island are Anse Lazio and the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. Anse Lazio is a gorgeous beach with clear water and amazing opportunities for snorkeling. The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is a palm forest that is preserved and serves as the home to countless reptiles and birds, including the very rare Seychelles Black Parrot.

13. Okavango Delta (Botswana) [SEE MAP]

Where the Okavango River meets the basin of the Kalahari, you’ll find the Okavango Delta. The delta is breathtaking to behold, and the source of water means that it is almost always surrounded by wildlife. The Okavango Delta is a popular spot for safaris, and you can also enjoy some amazing scenery. A fantastic and unforgettable way to explore the Okavango Delta is with an aerial tour by airplane, allowing you to see the meandering Okavango River as well as some of the larger game animals.

12. Black River Gorges National Park (Mauritius) [SEE MAP]

Another of the incredible islands in the Indian Ocean, located just off the Eastern Coast of Africa, is Mauritius. Known for beaches and tropical weather, Mauritius is also home to the magnificent Black River Gorges National Park. The park is relatively new, founded in just 1994 to protect the natural beauty of the island. When you visit, you’ll be able to hike along gorgeous trails and see a wide range of endemic wildlife and beautiful waterfalls.

11. Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) [SEE MAP]

In the far north of Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, is the famed Mount Kilimanjaro. The peak is the tallest in Africa, and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, making it a bucket-list destination for many travelers. While the very fit can trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, there are also other ways to explore the area. There are several shorter, easier hikes around the base of the mountain along with some gorgeous waterfalls and plenty of amazing scenery.

10. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda) [SEE MAP]

If you are interested in seeing rare wildlife, then the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda should definitely be on your itinerary for an African adventure. With a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, you can hike from the two hubs of Buhoma to Nkoringo and kayak on gorgeous lakes. The main attraction, however, is tracking gorillas. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

9. Kruger National Park (South Africa) [SEE MAP]

The best known of the many parks located in South Africa is the Kruger National Park, named after former South African President Paul Kruger. The park has three primary goals: Conservation, education and tourism. While it is possible to purchase a permit to enter the park and then drive on your own, most visitors prefer to join a guided tour or safari. Kruger National Park’s top attractions include the Crocodile River view point, the Iron Age village known as Masorini and the abundance of the big five animals: Lion, cape buffalo, rhinoceros, African elephant and leopard.

8. Marrakech (Morocco) [SEE MAP]

After Rabat and Casablanca, Marrakech is the largest city in Morocco . It is the most popular destinations in the country, because it is such an exciting city with an ancient history and amazing architecture. The historic district of Marrakech is called the Medina, and its main square is the bustling Djemaa El-Fna, where you can watch snake charmers and acrobats while strolling through shops and snacking on local culinary delights. You can also tour souks, or outdoor markets, and then relax at a local hammam, or spa.

7. Luxor (Egypt) [SEE MAP]

The ancient city of Luxor in Egypt is divided into halves by the Nile River. On the East Bank, you’ll find the famed Luxor Temple as well as unique museums like the Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum. Across the Nile on the West Bank, you’ll be able to explore both the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. The Valley of the Kings is one of the most iconic destinations in Africa, as it served as the burial place of many Egyptian kings.

6. Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania) [SEE MAP]

The nature preserve known as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Tanzania’s many attractions. The area is named after the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera in the center of the preserve. The crater is a highlight, and so is the steep ravine called Oldupai Gorge. The conservation area is also one of the best places to visit in Africa for nature lovers, and just some of the wildlife you might spot while visiting can include the African buffalo, black rhinoceros, hippopotamus, blue wildebeest and even the occasional Tanzanian cheetah.

5. Cape Town (South Africa) [SEE MAP]

The capital city of South Africa is Cape Town , an extraordinary, historic and vibrant city named for its location on the Cape of Good Hope. To get to know the history of Cape Town, be sure to explore incredible landmarks like the colorful homes in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood as well as Robben Island, where political prisoners like Nelson Mandela were once held. One of the top natural attractions is Table Mountain, which offers breathtaking views over the Cape of Good Hope as well as the sprawling city. You can hike up Table Mountain or take a ride on the cable cars.

4. Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya) [SEE MAP]

Africa is inhabited by many different people groups, but few as are fascinating as the Masai. This group owns the Masai Mara National Reserve toward the southern part of Kenya, and every year thousands of tourists come to explore the scenery and the wildlife. In addition to seeing everything from rhinos to lions, you can visit a local village to learn more about the Masai Mara culture, cuisine, customs and dress.

3. Victoria Falls (Zambia & Zimbabwe) [SEE MAP]

Right on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe is Victoria Falls, an incredible waterfall on the Zambezi River. In Zimbabwe, the falls as well as the surrounding town is known as Victoria Falls. Across the border in Zambia, the falls are called Mosi-oa-Tunya. From December to March, the falls are more dramatic because it is also the rainy season, but the rest of the year can offer a less obscured view. In addition to admiring the views, you can enjoy Victoria Falls by canoeing or rafting near its base or having a romantic sunset cruise beneath the falls.

2. Serengeti National Park (Tanzania) [SEE MAP]

In Northeast Tanzania is the Serengeti National Park, one of Africa’s most incredible conservation areas. The name Serengeti means endless plains, and that is exactly what you’ll find within the park. More than a million wildebeest, and over 200,000 zebras, migrate through the plains each year. When you visit the Serengeti National Park, you will be able to see wildlife like cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, gazelles and so much more. Hot air balloon trips as well as photo safaris are both incredible ways to make the most of the Serengeti.

1. Giza Necropolis (Egypt) [SEE MAP]

If you have always wanted to see the pyramids in Egypt , then make Giza your next travel destination. Giza is the gateway to Egypt’s most iconic structures, and it is very close to the city of Cairo. While in Giza, you can step inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, now the last remaining structure of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. You can also tour the Sphinx, several smaller pyramids and a number of incredible museums helping to explain the role of these pyramids and their significance in Egyptian history.

What are the best places to visit in Africa ? We cycled the continent from Cairo to Cape Town and have visited several countries in Africa since our first visit in 2008. Every time we leave the continent we feel that we truly have left our hearts in Africa. It is one of our favorite places to explore on earth.

These are the best places to visit in Africa that will make you fall in love with the continent. It isn’t some Wikipedia round up, it’s first-hand advice from people who have actually travelled to Africa.

Best Places to Visit in Africa

When traveling to the birthplace of civilization you can’t help but feel the energy of the continent. It is a massive piece of land that has its own unique energy and culture in each country.

When we cycled from Cairo to Cape Town, we saw it change before our eyes. From the arid desert lands of the Sahara and Nubian deserts in the north to the lush jungles of Zambia, and the incredible plains of East Africa. Africa stole our hearts and it will steal yours. These are the most beautiful places to visit in Africa.

1. Mount Kilimanjaro – Tanzania

When it comes to the best places to visit in Africa, nothing compares to Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro (Kili as it is affectionately known) is the highest mountain in Africa , and at 19340ft it is not surprising that summiting this impressive mound is a difficult and sometimes grueling task.

And we have the bragging rights to say we did it! The highest peak, Uhuru, can be reached by those with a moderate to high level of fitness, and if you can summit you’ll be able to say you reached the point of the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. 2. Serengeti National Park – Tanzania and Kenya

Arguably one of the most amazing natural events in the world, the Wildebeest Migration is an impressive movement to witness. The migration takes place among the open plains of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Masai Mara of Kenya.

More than a million wildebeest and zebra move towards greener pastures. The mass movement is a tense journey for the herbivores as they are followed closely by various predators hoping to benefit from the stragglers’ weaknesses. One of the best ways to see the Wildebeest Migration is from the air in a hot air balloon.

3. Masai Mara National Reserve – Kenya

The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s answer to the Serengeti and it is spectacular. It is actually connected to Serengeti. The mara is arguably one of the best places on the continent for wildlife viewing. When we took a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara we actually landed in Tanzania. During our safari in the Masai Mara , we saw all of the big 5 animals. It is one of the most beautiful African Destinations.

4. Lake Nakuru – Kenya

Lake Nakuru is one of the best places in Africa to see rhinos in their natural habitat. The African rhinoceros is under threat, but in Lake Nakuru, they are protected and you will have a good chance of seeing them in the world. Lake Nakuru is also known for its bird migration and a place where you can see thousands of flamingoes flying along its shore.

Lake Nakuru is an alkaline lake that attracts many species of birds and wildlife to its shores. When booking a tour of Kenya, be sure to include this in your itinerary.

5. Ngorongoro Crater – Tanzania

The world’s largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the great places to go in Africa. The Ngorongoro Crater measures 19km across, 600metres deep (from the rim of the crater to the floor) and has a total floor area of 260km squared.

When we visited The Ngorongoro Crater it felt as if we were entering a Disney Movie. Thousands of animals lived in harmony as zebras pranced and lions stalked their prey. It was like being in a fairytale.

The Ngorongoro Crater was one of our favorite destinations of our African Safari in Tanzania. A giant volcano exploded and then collapsed on itself around three million years ago to form the colossally remarkable crater. It is considered a “natural enclosure” for wildlife – many species are found on the crater floor.

6. Virunga National Park – Rwanda and Uganda

The chain of volcanic mountains that make up the Virunga Mountains lies on the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. Their spectacular beauty is due to their luscious and fertile slopes. The Virunga Mountains are also the only remaining home of the severely endangered mountain gorillas.

We met the world’s premier gorilla expert Ian Redmond while traveling in India and have wanted to visit the gorillas ever since. While haven’t actually visited the Gorillas yet, we do feel we know a lot after meeting Ian and talking with Rwanda Tourism.

Virunga National Park and the Virunga Mountains are home to other interesting animals such as Chimpanzees, forest elephants and the okapi (a mammal similar to the giraffe but with much shorter legs and neck, they have stripes down their legs).

7. Lalibella – Ethiopia

Ethiopia isn’t on a lot of people’s radar, but it is a fascinating place to visit in Africa. It is filled with historic sites and stunning scenery. People still think of the famine of the 1980s when picturing Ethiopia, but it is a lush and green country housing rocky mountains, lakes, and rivers.

Lalibella is a complex of stone churches dug into the ground. Ethiopia embraced Christianity and while cycling through the country for 23 days, we saw its presence throughout. Other places to visit in Ethiopia are Gondar, a picturesque city filled with medieval castles dotting a lush landscape of trees and lakes.

8. Table Mountain – South Africa

When Dave and I first arrived in Cape Town it was shrouded in cloud. We had heard it was the most beautiful city in Africa, but it took four days to reveal itself. Best Things to do in South Africa

When the rain lifted, the most awe-inspiring scene appeared as the massive Table Mountain towered overhead. Cape Town is our favorite city in Africa. It’s an amazing place to make a base to explore all the great things that South Africa has to offer.

9. The Namib Desert – Sossusvlei Namibia

This huge clay pan enclosed by magnificent sand dunes is located in the Namib Naukluft Park of Namibia. Some of the massive sand dunes are an unbelievable 300 meters tall and are often referred to as the highest in the world.

When it rains, a rare occurrence, the Sossusvlei fills with water and the resultant turquoise lake remains for long periods as the clay layers allow very slow water filtration. The Namib Desert is truly one of the most unique and best places to visit in Southern Africa.

10. Okavango Delta – Botswana

The Okavango delta is often incorrectly referred to as the Okavanga Swamp. It is the world’s largest inland delta and covers an area of 17000 square kilometers. Thousands of years ago the drying up of the Lake Makgadikgadi was the cause of this unique water feature, and it has attracted explorers and tourists ever since.

The Okavango River drains its water onto the Kalahari Desert plains in Botswana and forms an intricate and awe-inspiring labyrinth of inland lagoons, lakes and islands – the Okavanga Delta.

11. Fish River Canyon – Namibia

After the Grand Canyon of America, the Namibian site of the Fish River Canyon is the most spectacular in the world. With a 160km ravine which measures at about 27km wide and 550 meters deep in some places the Fish River flows in the belly of this giant spectacle.

Here you’ll enjoy wide-open spaces that allow you to breathe the fresh air easy and take in the vast scenery.

12. Victoria Falls – Zambia and Zimbabwe

The thousands of tones of water gushing downwards is the site of the “largest curtain of falling water on the earth”. Victoria Falls is a grandiose waterfall on the Zambezi River at the Zimbabwean-Zambian border. One of the most famous things to do in Victoria Falls Vic is to go bungee jumping on the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The “Mosi-oa-Tunya” (smoke that thunders) columns of water spray can be seen from miles away and the sound elaborates to visitors just how powerful the water flow is.

13. Chobe National Park – Botswana

I remember cycling the elephant highway through Chobe National Park. As we rode along the paved road cycling 800 km in just five days, we wondered what lurked behind the long grass.

Home to Africa’s largest concentration of elephants, we camped among elephant dung and wondered when the next herd would walk through our camp. It was an exciting time!

One of the most unique African safaris we took was on a riverboat in Chobe where we floated along the waters watching wildlife gaze upon the shore. You can even visit Chobe on a day trip from Victoria Falls if you are in Zambia and want to add another country on your Africa bucket list.

14. Lake Malawi – Malawi

Malawi isn’t the most visited place in Africa, but it is one of the most special places we visited. It was camping on the banks of Lake Malawi that felt like a dream. Local villagers flocked to our camp each evening to say hello and welcomed us with song and dance.

We’ll never forget the hospitality of this country and there are many things to do in Malawi. You can go on safari here, cruise the Lilongwe River and explore the 4th largest lake on earth.

15. Kruger National Park – South Africa

When cycling the South African nations from Zambia to South Africa, we visited many national parks. And Kruger National Park is the premier wildlife viewing game reserve in the country.

It is South Africa’s premier safari destination. But if you base yourself in Johannesburg, this is the place to go to see Africa’s big 5. We went on many other game safaris in the country though and all of them were fantastic so we felt like we didn’t miss out. Other game reserves include Kariega Game Reserve , iSimangaliso Wetlands , and other private game reserves.

16. Great Pyramids at Giza – Egypt

The Egyptians have such a rich and decadent cultural history, and the Pyramids are an important cornerstone in that regard.

The triangular architecture of the Pyramids has become the icon most famously synonymous with Egypt, and most of them (there are over 100) were built as tombs to preserve the mummies of Pharaohs and their family-members. 17. White Desert – Egypt

It amazes me how few people know of the White Desert of Egypt. It was at the top of our list of best places to visit in Egypt only second to the Great Pyramids.

The White Desert of Egypt is located near the town of Farafra in Central Egypt. The white chalky formations were formed by sandstorms that occur in the area.

We took a jeep safari to the White Desert to experience what life is like for the Bedouins of the area. It was spectacular to camp outdoors in the middle of the Western Sahara Desert.

18. Where the White and Blue Nile Meet – Sudan

Sudan is not on many people’s radar, but the African nation of Sudan touched our hearts.

It was more like a scene from Lawrence of Arabia than actually being in Jordan where Lawrence of Arabia took place. Camel herds walked the desert as Bedouins stopped us to say hello. (and offer a camel or two to marry Deb)

It is home to where the Blue and White Nile Rivers meet. The world’s longest river converges in the capital city of Khartoum from Ethiopia’s Lake Tana, The Mediterranean Sea in Egypt and Lake Victoria.

19. The Souks of Marrakech – Morocco

20. Fez – Morocco

Fez is the oldest city in the country and the Medina (or Fes el-Bali) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is nowhere in Morocco that has quite the vibrancy and culture of Fes, and in particular the Fes el-Bali, so a visit to it should be an essential destination on your itinerary.

21. Blue Nile Gorge – Ethiopia

The Blue Nile Gorge takes us up an incredible climb from the bottom of the gorges to a spectacular view at the top.

We cycled up this gorge to truly appreciate the intense climb. The dramatic road filled with switchbacks tested our limits but the view was worth it. Ethiopia was surprisingly mountainous. We climbed to the top of many views just like the one above.

22. Karnak Temple Complex – Egypt

This is one of the most impressive and largest temple sites around the globe. It is a conglomeration of three main temples and several smaller temples (which sadly are in ruins). Read more: 10 Amazing Temples of Egypt – That We’ve Seen

The Karnak Temple Complex is also located near Luxor which is home to other impressive sites. It is the only main temple area open to tourists and the general public. For a period of about 500 years between the 16 th and 11 th centuries BC it was in the Valley of the Kings where the tombs for Kings and all other nobles were constructed.

23. Valley of the Kings – Egypt

Found on the West bank of the river Nile near Luxor this impressive valley is not only majestic because of the 63 (approximate) royal tombs in the area, but because of the expansive landscape.

Most of the tombs are said to hold priceless Eqyptian antiquities (some of which have been stolen over time). It was in this valley in 1922 that the intact tomb of the great historical figure Tutankhamun was discovered. Read more: 20 Exciting Things to do in Egypt – Plus A Few Fun Facts

24. Abu Simbel – Egypt

Historically moved from their original location the two temples at Abu Simbel are an impressive sight to behold. We visited Abu Simbel while taking a ferry from Egypt to Sudan. It is an extraordinary sight.

They were carved out of the sandstone cliff near the River Nile over three millenniums ago – during the reign of the great Pharaoh, Ramesses II. The temples were built to honour the Pharaoh and the Egyptian Gods.

25. Zanzibar – Tanzania

Zanzibar is a paradise island off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Visiting it after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro took us to paradise. The beaches of Nungwi are the most beautiful in the world with powder white sand and a tide that leaves the most colorful scene along the seabed. Stone Town is a maze of medieval streets. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it takes you back in time to the height of the spice trade.

26. Seychelles

If you love adventure, the island of Madagascar is the place to go. Madagascar is like its own little Galapagos Islands with species endemic only to the island. From Lemurs to the Panther Chameleon Madagascar is filled with fascinating animal species.

When to Visit Africa

Africa is a massive continent and climate and temperatures change drastically between nations. Africa can be visited year round but you will have to keep an eye on the seasons.

Rainy season can be difficult to travel through . Trust us, we’ve been to in Africa during the rainy season and it is torrential.

The best times for an African safari depend on where you are going.

• South Africa safaris are best between May and October.
• Tanzania is best from June to October with migration happening in June or July.
• Kenya safaris are best from June to October with the migration happening there later in the season in August.
• Egypt is best visited between October and April as it can get very hot during the summer months.
• SouthAfrica can be visited any time of the year with the rainy season having short rains during the day. The dry season is hot, but not unbearable.

So many places in Africa are beautiful it is difficult to choose a favorite. But for us, the most beautiful places in Africa are, Zanzibar, The Serengeti, Cape Town, Fish River Canyon, and the Ngorongoro Crater stand out.

The best place to view wildlife in Africa is the Serengeti for the big 5 in Tanzania, Lake Nakuru in Kenya for rhinos, Amboseli and Chobe National Park for elephants and Chobe National Park for a river safari.

Lake Nakuru has the highest concentration of rhinos in Africa. If you have your heart set on viewing rhinoceros, this is the place to go.

The African continent enjoys a vast and ever-changing landscape from lusciously fertile jungles through to the hot, arid desert.

Please get your facts right. Serengeti National Park is in Tanzania and not in Tanzania and Kenya

Excellent article about Maasai Mara national reserve. This park is the answer to any traveler, besides the big 5, what about the great wildebeest migration?????. This is another circus of the animals moving in a thousands in a mixture of zebras and wildebeest, with this activity, you wonder how God created animals? they behave like human beings and even better than human beings when it comes to trust and love. The cheos starts from when they are crossing mara river from Serengeti national park in Tanzania to Maasai mara national reserve in Kenya.

Well Africa is pretty much the epitome of adventure, housing increidble wildlife species , to me gorilla trekking in uganda is sofar the best i have had followed by the wildebeest migration in masai mara nationa reserve kenya.

Africa. There’s nowhere like it on the planet for wildlife, wild lands and rich traditions that endure. It’s really such a great place to visit.

I like to make my trip intresting,now i think choosing Africa will be a good option to make it happen.some of them mentioned above are in my wishlist mainly lake Nakuru,cape town,Victoria falls ,Madagascar.Since l love adventure and wild Africa will be good option in my coming vaccation.now i am in a thrilling mood….

I advise you to visit Morocco, It has a very beautiful cities and plenty of sand in Sahara desert. You can meet lovely people and try delicious meals.

A trip to the Victoria Falls is a splendid way of indulging yourself in extreme adventure. This heavenly allurement is either reaches by flights to Zimbabwe or by going through Zambia as stated above. Whichever African beauty you choose the journey to the Victoria Falls will surely be one to remember.

Guys, it’s time to talk about Africa. 

The African continent is home to some of the most exquisite destinations, and at an area of 11.6 million square miles, Africa has so much to offer holidaymakers. Everything from game parks to towering mountains and beautiful beach islands. Yes, really.

It’s also one of the most overlooked continents when it comes to travel outside of safari holidays or a few select destinations like Cape Town – and I think that’s a huge shame. 

Rather than thinking of “Africa” as some homogenous thing, think of it as a tapestry of cultures and landscapes – a million different possibilities, thousands of languages and 54 nations bounded by a single landmass (plus some islands). 

That said, the continent is vast, and from a beginner’s perspective, it can be overwhelming to choose where to go in Africa on holiday. Read on to discover the best places to visit in Africa that you should have on your radar.

Best Places to Visit in Africa

Marrakesh .

Let me start off this guide with one of my favourite African destinations: Marrakesh. In the west of Morocco lies its vibrant capital.

Within Marrakesh’s beautiful terracotta walls, you’ll find many things to do. From admiring the ornate architecture of the Koutoubia Mosque to strolling around the lush Majorelle Gardens. Not to mention you can explore the energetic souks and picture-perfect riads that dot the city.

Beyond this, Marrakesh is genuinely the best place to visit in Africa for interior design and architecture lovers. This is no more true than at the Bahia Palace, with its stunning zellige tiles and articulately-made iron features.

Etosha National Park

When I mention Africa, I guarantee that incredible wildlife in its sprawling national parks comes to your mind, right? Well, Etosha National Park in Namibia is one of the best places to spot some of these wild animals.  

This is one of the largest game parks in Africa and stretches over 220 miles. It’s a popular safari destination on the continent, as you can spot over 114 mammals and around 340 birds at one of the 80 watering holes in the park. 

You’ll be able to spot all kinds of animals here, such as elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras, on game drives. This fully-adaptable game drive is a brilliant option for those looking to get out in the reserve as it includes an expert guide and hotel pick-ups and drop-offs. 

The Seychelles

Long time readers of The Discoveries Of will know just how much I love the Seychelles – there was no way I was going to miss this gem out.

Just off the eastern coast of Africa is the stunning archipelago of the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. There are so many luxury hotels that it’s often a challenge to decide where you want to stay (now, that’s a problem I don’t mind having). No wonder that it’s one of the most popular of Africa’s travel destinations.

Why do I love the country so much? Well, the Seychelles’ beaches are hands down some of the best beaches in the world, as they have crystal clear waters and expansive white-sand shores.  

Additionally, there are tons of things to do in Seychelles , from snorkelling to hiking in Morne Seychellois National Park. 

Plus, if you’re an animal lover, you won’t want to skip out on seeing the adorable Giant Tortoises that can be found in a couple of locations across the islands.

Cairo 

Next on my list of the best places in Africa to visit is the illustrious city of Cairo in Egypt. As a spot steeped in ancient history and bustling bazaars, it’s a terrific city with an unmatchable atmosphere. 

There are so many exciting things to do in Cairo , from visiting the pyramids of Giza to taking a Nile River cruise . 

But, if you genuinely want to unpack the history of Egypt, I recommend spending a few hours at the Egyptian Museum (soon to be replaced with the Grand Egyptian that should open this year. 

It has the world’s largest collection of Egyptian artefacts, amounting to over 50,000 objects. Besides this, you’ll want to try some of Cairo’s flavourful food, from delicious baba ganoush to Tamiya (similar to falafel).

Near the southernmost tip of Africa lies the charming city of Cape Town. As one of South Africa’s capitals, this city is delightful – from its exquisite beaches to its striking peak, Table Mountain. 

It’s one of the best places to visit in Africa for first-timers, as it has quite a relaxed atmosphere and an inviting culture. Moreover, there are a lot of things to do in Cape Town , from paragliding off Signal Hill or kayaking in the Atlantic Ocean .  

Serengeti National Park

For a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, I recommend visiting the Serengeti to witness the Great Migration. This is when millions of wildebeest migrate between Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara in Kenya.  

Sure, you might have seen it in a nature documentary and thought it looked cool, but IRL it’s spectacular. If you want to catch it live, visit the park between the end of June and August.

Besides this, Serengeti National Park has an abundance of wildlife, with over 2 million ungulates (hoofed animals), 550 cheetahs, 4000 lions, and around 500 bird species. I’d say this is one of the must-see places in Africa.

Another brilliant city in Morocco, and one of the top places to visit in North Africa, is Essaouira. It’s world-renowned for its Alizee coastal wind and a beach destination full of character. 

What’s more, there’s so much to do in Essaouira , from eating seafood at its port (bringing a whole new meaning to freshly caught ) to visiting the Galerie La Kasbah (for all you art lovers).

Lastly, for world and jazz music enthusiasts, the city hosts the Festival of Gnaoua each year in June – time your trip for then for a magical experience.

Lake Malawi

Encompassing parts of Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania is the gigantic Lake Malawi which covers around 11,400 square miles. It’s famous for being meromictic, meaning its surface and deep water layers do not mix. 

Besides this, it’s unusually clear for a freshwater lake with a beautiful greenish-blue hue. This clarity makes it easy to spot fish where it’s clear.

However, scuba diving is a better way to see the Earth’s most diverse freshwater fish population. Just take some antibiotics afterwards to prevent getting bilharzia.

Looking to go back in time to ancient Egypt? Then, head to Luxor, home to several age-old monuments of that time. 

Back then, it was Thebes – the capital of ancient Egypt and home to numerous rulers. Now, you can explore everything, from the Tomb of Tutankhamun to the Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings . 

However, if you’re looking for thrilling things to do in Luxor , take a hot air balloon ride for a genuinely unique sightseeing experience.

Okavango Delta

As the biggest freshwater swamp in the southern part of the continent, the Okavango Delta might not be on your list of the best places to go to in Africa. However, this would be a mistake, as it’s truly a magnificent spot. 

It’s also one of Africa’s top places to visit for birding, especially in the wet season. So, if you’re like Steve Martin in The Big Year , you’ll be at home. That’s because, besides just crocodiles, hippos, and elephants, you can also spot over a hundred bird species here in a day. 

The island of Zanzibar , just off the Tanzanian coastline, deserves its name among the best places to vacation in Africa. Why? It’s got stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and colourful coral reefs waiting to be explored. 

This makes snorkelling the perfect thing to do here, as it has over 500 marine species. This Mnemba Atoll snorkelling tour is ideal for seeing some of these vibrant fish and includes delicious snacks. 

Last but not least, don’t forget the charming Stone Town, which has ornate mosques and electric bazaars, perfect for a mid-morning stroll (before inevitably heading straight back to the beach for an afternoon nap).

Another destination for safari lovers: The incredible Masai Mara game reserve covers a region of 583 square miles in southwestern Kenya. 

It’s a spot most known for being part of the Great Migration, similar to Serengeti, and especially for the Mara River. 

That’s because it’s here at the Mara River where the wildebeest cross the most perilous part of their journey. Sadly, many of these ungulates get caught by lions and crocodiles. 

Like I’ve already mentioned, for your best chance at spotting this, visit between July and August. 

Victoria Falls

Called “The Smoke That Thunders” by locals, you can see why Victoria Falls is amongst the most beautiful places to visit in Africa. It’s a magnificent sight, seeing the water drop 300 feet and the immense mist that follows. 

You’ll want to be on the Zimbabwean side for the best views of Victoria Falls. However, for a truly romantic experience, book this sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi just before the falls.

Kruger National Park 

The majestic Kruger National Park is one of the best places to travel to in Africa for a safari trip. Found near the South African border with Mozambique, this is a haven for wildlife in the country and houses thousands of animal species. 

This is the best place to visit in Africa if you’re looking for the Big 5, as it has them all. You’ll need to go on a game drive with an experienced guide for your best chance at seeing all of them. They know exactly where to find these impressive beasts. 

As the capital of Kenya, Nairobi is a bustling city that serves as an important commercial hub of the country and for Africa. What’s more, it’s on the doorsteps of several game parks, such as Nairobi National Park and Masai Mara. 

Besides this, it’s also home to an energetic nightlife scene (Mercury Lounge and Havana are great) and fantastic attractions, such as Bomas of Kenya and Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre tours.

Another one of the coolest places to visit in Africa (okay, not literally) is the unique destination of Sossusvlei. It’s also one of the spots many miss in Namibia; many opt for the Skeleton Coast or Etosha National Park instead. 

However, you don’t need to make that same lapse of judgement. You have me to guide you, and I think visiting this land of magnificent red and orange dunes is a not-miss destination. 

You can always turn it into a summer road trip by driving to Etosha. 

Ngorongoro Crater

Another one of the most popular places to visit in Africa is the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest inactive caldera in the world. 

But why visit? Besides being one of the coolest photo spots in the world, it’s an incredibly biodiverse area home to over 30,000 wild animals, such as wildebeest, zebra, eland, and the elusive black rhino. 

In fact, it’s one of the best spots to see black rhinos in Africa, as it’s a protected area. Also, it’s the last part of the Great Migration before they head back to the Serengeti, so why not plan a route that includes this spot, too?).

Last, but certainly not least – I’ve added Bazaruto Island to this guide as it’s one of the lesser-known places to visit in sub-Saharan Africa. It’s a gorgeous part of Mozambique, just off its coastline in the Indian Ocean. 

It competes with some of the best beach resort destinations in the world, however, it gets even better as it’s got a thriving coral reef system perfect for one thing: scuba diving. 

This is because the sea temperature’s warm, the water’s clear, and there are over 2000 fish species. Sounds like a dream? It really is.

Practical Tips for Exploring the Best Places in Africa

• Since Africa is such a vast continent, I recommend visiting a portion of it on each trip. Safari packages are a great way to experience various areas, such as this multi-day safari trip of Tanzania .
• Make sure to arrange your visas before visiting countries in Africa. Otherwise, you’ll cause yourself extra stress – plus who wants to deal with the stress of border agents?
• Check with your doctor before heading to Africa, as certain areas require proof of vaccinations for yellow fever and malaria, amongst other things.

10 Best Travel Destinations in Africa

Africa is one of the best travel destinations in the world. Here, you can enjoy crystal blue beaches, majestic wildlife, and a wealth of culture and history. This article will look at ten countries to visit across the continent.

Tourism in Africa increased by 2% in 2014, according to the UN World Tourism Organization report of that year.  It reached an estimated $36 billion in revenue from $1 billion in 2013. Sub-Saharan Africa saw the most arrivals from international tourists. International arrivals increased by 3% from 2013. The top reason for visitors coming to various destinations across the continent was leisure. Global locations where most visitors came from included North America, Asia, and Europe.

North Africa saw a small increase of 1% in international arrivals. Geopolitical conflict and the outbreak of the Ebola virus were to blame for low visitor turnout.

Tourism contributed 8.5% to the continent’s GDP, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council report. The contribution was an estimated $177.8 billion. The tourism industry also made a contribution of 2.9% to employment. Professionals received jobs in the airline and aviation industry, transportation services, hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies.

Intra-Africa travel is frequent among countries of the same regional bloc. The reason for this is that it’s affordable. Air travel within the continent is quite expensive, ranging from $461 to well over $972. A flight to Madrid from Johannesburg starts at an average price of $519. However, traveling to Marrakech from Johannesburg can cost an average of $1,038. These high travel costs create a barrier to smooth and affordable movement in the continent.

Visa requirements are also not as stringent between countries of the same regional bloc. Visitors only need a valid passport. For countries that do require a visa, the application fee can be hefty, starting at an average price of $50. This cost, along with flight and accommodation costs, leaves African tourists with an expensive travel bill.

Despite these barriers, African tourists still make their way to top destinations across the continent. These include South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Botswana.

From city excursions to safaris and beach getaways, Africa accommodates any traveler. Below are travel destinations across the continent that are a must-visit for any avid African traveler:

If you’re looking for a great safari getaway, Botswana is the perfect destination to visit. Bordered by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, Botswana is home to the Okavango Delta. The delta is one of the most sought after wilderness destinations in the world. Its location is in the Kalahari Basin. Here you can experience an array of wildlife and vegetation.

If you love culture and heritage, you can explore San history at the Tsodilo Hills. You can visit the villages of the San people, and see rock paintings that have existed for thousands of years.

Just love this list. We have been in Victoria Falls, Namibia and South Africa. We would love to go to Tanzania:) But traveling in Africa sometimes is very expensive…

Kenya is in africa and you can visit places like Masai Mara for the big five safari we also have tree hotels in aberdares where you spot animals in your rooms.Also white beaches of diani for relaxation after the safari

Top 10 Destinations in Africa for a First-Time Visitor

Richard Mullin once famously said that "the only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa, for he has so much to look forward to." First-time visitors to Africa are indeed in an enviable position, with 54 countries to choose from and countless spectacular destinations ranging from game reserves to beaches, mountains, and cities bursting with color and culture. However, the prospect of picking a starting point from which to explore the world's second-largest continent can also seem like a daunting task. Here are 10 of our favorite bucket list destinations, all of which offer an unforgettable experience for first-time Africa visitors. 

Marrakesh, Morocco

Those interested in the unique culture and history of North Africa will find plenty of both in the most famous of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities. Marrakesh was founded in 1062 by the Almoravids and in the centuries since has gathered a fabulous collection of mosques, palaces, tombs, and museums. Top historical sights include the Saadian Tombs , where members of the ruling Saadian dynasty are buried; the El Badi and El Bahia palaces; and the medieval Ali Ben Youssef Medersa. 

The best way to immerse yourself in the spirit of Marrakesh is to stroll through the original walled city, known as a medina. Here you will find a narrow maze of streets lined with stalls piled high with spices, jeweled slippers, stained glass lamps, and swathes of freshly dyed fabric. Stop in the souks for a cup of mint tea or to haggle over a purchase, or to watch artisans at work using techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. For the most authentic stay, book a room in a traditional Moroccan riad . 

Cape Town, South Africa

For a cultural break at the other end of the continent, head to Cape Town . Frequently voted as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, it’s flanked by the ocean on two sides and presided over by the iconic silhouette of Table Mountain . There is something for everyone in the Mother City. Art galleries, museums, and concert venues cater to the culture vultures, while the world-class restaurant scene draws inspiration from South Africa’s bountiful produce and the wines of the surrounding Cape Winelands. 

Natural beauty abounds, whether you spend your time on the white sand beaches of Camps Bay and Blouberg, or take a scenic drive along the Cape Peninsula. For many visitors, Cape Town’s historical landmarks are the main attraction. Take a ferry out to Robben Island to see the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years, or discover the Islamic culture of the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood. For an insight into the atrocities and aftermath of the apartheid era, consider signing up for a township tour . 

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

If you’re fascinated by natural phenomena, Victoria Falls is an obvious starting point for your first African adventure. Voted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the waterfall spans the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and sees the Zambezi River plunge over a drop of 354 feet into the gorge below. Although it isn’t the world’s highest or widest waterfall, it is the largest, with over 500 million liters of water flowing over the edge every minute during peak flood season. 

The curtain of spray can be seen from 30 miles away and is the inspiration for the waterfall’s indigenous name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, or The Smoke That Thunders. If you visit from the Zimbabwean side, walking trails through Victoria Falls National Park guide you to a series of viewpoints which afford magnificent frontal views of the Main Falls. The Zambian section of the falls has fewer viewpoints but does provide the adrenalin-inducing opportunity to swim in the Devil’s Pool on the very edge of the falls. 

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Africa is a continent of superlatives, and the next one on our list is Mount Kilimanjaro . Located close to the Kenyan border in Tanzania, it is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world with a height of 19,341 feet. It’s also one of the few record-holding mountains that one can climb without specialist equipment or training; instead, anyone with a good level of fitness and the right approach can reasonably hope to summit Kilimanjaro. 

The first step is to pick a trusted tour operator ( Thomson Treks is one of our favorite options with a success rate of 98 percent). Next, it’s a good idea to pick a longer route with a more gradual ascent rate, since altitude sickness is the primary reason for failed summit attempts. The journey up the mountain will take you through five different climate zones, ranging from rainforest to alpine desert. At the top, a sight that might surprise first-time visitors to Africa awaits: snow and ice! 

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Tanzania is home to another iconic African destination: the Serengeti . Located in the far north of the country, it shares unfenced borders with Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . Together the two parks host one of nature’s most extraordinary events, the annual Great Migration of several million wildebeest, zebra, and other antelope. For the best chance of seeing the herds on the move, head to the Serengeti from December to July, making sure to check which area of the 5,700-square-mile park is currently seeing action. 

Even if you don’t catch the migration, the Serengeti is a remarkable safari destination. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its ecological importance, it boats the highest concentration of plains game in Africa. The abundance of antelope, zebra, and other ungulate species attracts large numbers of predators, making the Serengeti one of the best places on the continent to spot lions and leopards . All of the Big Five can be seen with some luck (rhinos are notoriously difficult to spot). 

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Another destination famous for its incredible biodiversity, the Okavango Delta is a seasonal flood plain in northern Botswana. It’s fed by the Okavango River, which bursts its banks at the end of the rainy season in April or May and fans out across the Kalahari Desert, bringing life-giving water and nutrients to the otherwise arid landscape. At its annual peak, the Delta covers over 8,500 square miles and is a miraculous spread of lush green plains, forests, and marsh-like waterways.

After flying into your camp, the best way to explore is in a traditional dugout canoe. For an unforgettable insight into life in the African wilderness, opt for a few nights under canvas on one of the Delta’s uninhabited islands. In the darkness, listen out for the calls of the 160 different mammal species that call the Okavango home. Amongst these are the Big Five and one of the world’s greatest populations of endangered African wild dogs. Birders are rewarded with over 530 species, many of them regional specials.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Located on the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Volcanoes National Park spans approximately 60 square miles of the Virunga Mountains. There is one main reason to visit, and that’s for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, there are just over 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild. These incredible primates share more than 98 percent of our genetic code and are amongst our closest relatives. 

Volcanoes National Park is home to 10 habituated gorilla troops, meaning that they are accustomed enough to humans to allow for amazing close encounters. These encounters are strictly regulated for the gorillas’ safety; you will need to apply well in advance for a permit. To find the gorillas, you will trek on foot through the mist-laden cloud forest, a memorable experience in itself. Make sure to leave enough time to visit Karisoke Research Center, where renowned primatologist Dian Fossey conducted her life’s work. 

River Nile, Egypt

The Nile is the longest river in Africa and, according to most authorities, the longest in the world. It runs through 11 countries on its northwards journey to the Mediterranean Sea, but by far, the most famous destination for Nile river cruises is Egypt. This is because an Egyptian river cruise allows you to see many of the country’s most iconic ancient sights along the way. Typically boats ply the stretch of river between Luxor and Aswan, just as traditional feluccas have done for millennia. 

Top stops include the ancient monuments of Luxor and Karnak, the Valley of the Kings (where the famous tomb of the boy king Tutankhamun lies), and the temples of Edfu, Philae , and Kom Ombo . The best cruises include a professional Egyptologist guide who will be able to tell you the history of each building, and the mythology that inspired its architecture. There are many different cruise ships to choose from, ranging from the affordable to the luxurious, and from classic steamships to modern liners. 

Sossusvlei, Namibia

Africa’s best-known desert is undoubtedly the Sahara, but there are some spectacular desert landscapes to be found further south as well. In Namibia , one of the country’s greatest natural treasures is the Sossusvlei dune sea, located in the heart of the Namib Desert. Here, ocher-colored dunes soar skywards in fantastic formations created over millions of years by the force of strong winds coming ashore from the Atlantic Ocean. Some of these dunes are contenders for the title of tallest in the world. 

The dunes are a photographer’s dream, especially in the first light of dawn and in the late afternoon. Their razor-sharp spines create perfect geometric patterns and contrast beautifully against the blazing blue sky. For many visitors to Sossusvlei, the highlight is the famous dawn climb of Dune 45. You’ll ascend in the freezing semi-darkness, then reach the summit of the dune in time to watch the sun appear over the horizon and paint the surrounding landscape with hues of fiery red, rose, and gold. 

Nosy Be, Madagascar

Known as the eighth continent on account of its incredible and unique wildlife, Madagascar is probably most famous for its lemurs. However, the island nation is also home to some of Africa’s best beaches , and the number one destination for beach lovers is Nosy Be island. Situated off Madagascar’s northwest coast, the island boasts many stretches of pure white sand to choose from, of which Andilana (on the northwest tip) is probably the most beautiful. The islets around the main island also have more than their fair share of stunning beaches. 

When (if) you tire of working on your tan, Nosy Be’s island lifestyle also offers plenty of opportunities for adventure. Snorkeling and scuba diving are both popular pastimes, especially on the pristine reefs off nearby Nosy Tanikely. From September to December every year, it is also possible to swim alongside whale sharks on a snorkeling tour with Les Baleines Rand’eau . On land, you can come face to face with some of Madagascar’s charismatic lemur species in Lokobe National Park.

South Africa

As the southernmost country on the continent, South Africa offers fantastic diversity. From safaris to scenic deserts, and beautiful beaches to charming towns, South Africa has it all, including many ways to say hello in South Africa !

Head to the best cities to visit in South Africa, like Cape Town and Johannesburg but also take trips to the beautiful nature spots as well as the fantastic Kruger National Park. 

Kruger National Park is a game park, home to more than 140 mammal species, including the Big 5. There are some beautiful lodges to stay in and around the National Park and plenty of tours are available from the nearby cities, for those looking for a day trip.

Other National Parks you could visit nearby are:

• Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Located on the border with Botswana, this park is known for its black-maned lions. 
• Hluhluwe and iMfolozi National Park: Located in the east of the county, this is a park where you can find the Big 5 along with a huge rhino population. 
• Addo Elephant National Park: Located on the South Coast, you can obviously see elephants here along with the Big 5. This is also a great option for those wanting a self-drive safari.
• Pilanesburg National Park & Game Reserve: You can find the Big 5 at this national park, which is ideally located near Johannesburg. This is a popular option for those wanting to experience a safari as a day trip from Johannesburg. 

The remote region of Namaqua is usually a wasteland, but during the month of July, the winter rains bring wildflowers across the land, creating a picture-perfect view. 

Cape Town is the most popular destination in South Africa, offering fantastic food, vibrant nightlife, and impressive views from Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. 

Learn about the country’s horrific history at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and with guided tours available at both the museum and the Constitutional Court. 

Once you have learned about the history, head to Robben Island, the maximum security prison that ran until 1996. Many political prisoners were held here including Nelson Mandela. 

Known for its natural beauty, culture, and wildlife, Tanzania is one of the best places to visit in Africa. 

Begin a trip way exploring Serengeti National Parokne of the best wildlife sanctuaries in the world. This is also one of Africa’s most renowned national parks and home to the Great Migration of Wildebeest and zebras. When planning where to go on safari , Serengeti should be on the top of your list!

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, attracting climbers and trekkers from across the world. For those who want to see the impressive mountain without the climb, you could take a Kilimanjaro helicopter tour and witness the spectacular views from above. 

Just off Tanzania’s coast are the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. Often overlooked, this beautiful destination not only offers breathtaking beaches and stunning sunsets but you can also spend time visiting the old part of Zanzibar City, known as Stone Town.

If you can time your visit, head here in July to experience the Festival of the Dhow countries; one of the best African celebrations to experience. 

Beyond planning a Tanzania Safari , make sure to learn about the incredible cultures in Tanzania, like the Maasai Culture and their distinctive attire and traditional way of life. 

Spend time visiting the Great Lakes; including Lake Victoria, Lake Malawi, and Lake Tanganyika but also visit the Ngorongoro Crater; a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a unique natural wonder in the country. 

Victoria Falls

Located between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site.

Plan a visit in April or May to see the falls at their best, with Devil’s Pool, knife-edge Bridge, and Livingstone Island offering the best vantage points.

After seeing the falls from above, don’t forget to go whitewater rafting in the Zambezi River for a different angle of the famous falls.

How to visit Victoria Falls:

• Choose which entry point you want to travel from; you can access the falls from the Zimbabwean side and the Zambian side, both offering incredible views and lots of activities. 
• Find out the Visa Requirements for your chosen side, these will vary depending on your nationality. Information is often found on your local government website. 
• Book accommodation in advance as this area is very popular in the peak tourist seasons and luxury hotels and lodges are few and far between. 
• Guided tours are also available, including helicopter rides , bungee jumping opportunities, sunset cruises , and white-water rafting . 

Often overlooked, Rwanda is a great place to explore, especially if this is your first visit to the content.

The city of Kigali is a clean, thriving city with a low crime rate. Here you can find plenty of restaurants, cafes, galleries, sports events, and nightlife options.

Then head out of the city to explore the Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. 

Rwanda is known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, so, of course, you can expect plenty of stunning landscapes to explore and appreciate. 

Rwanda is also known for gorilla trekking ; with the Volcanoes National Park being home to several gorilla families that you can observe for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

You can also enjoy the diverse wildlife at Akagera National Park, home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and plenty of bird species. 

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a dense rainforest full of chimpanzees and colobus monkeys that you can appreciate along the canopy walks.

If you still have some energy left after all those parks and hikes, make sure to head up Mount Karisimbi for amazing views.

Known for being the home of the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya is another one of the best places to visit in Africa, where you can see some of the best wildlife Africa has to offer.

This is the destination to visit if you want to see animals up close. Enjoy plenty of safaris across the various parks and game reserves, with the best being Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, and Samburu. 

Trek up Mount Kenya, the second-highest peak in Africa then see the flocks of pink flamingos at Lake Nakuru. 

Spend time in the capital city of Nairobi, home to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Giraffe Centre, and the Karen Blixen Museum.

For one of the most unique hotels in the world , you could stay at the Giraffe Manor located in Kenya too. 

Plan a visit between July to October to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara. 

For a luxurious beach vacation, head to Mauritius. With powdery sands and high-end resorts, this small island is the ideal romantic destination for many.

Plus, you can enjoy the local seafood, teas, and rums whilst you soak up the sun and meet the friendly locals. 

Enjoy the stunning beaches of Mauritius, with the best being Flic en Flac, Belle Mare and Trou Aux Biches. Along many of the beaches, you can enjoy water activities like scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkeling, and kite surfing. 

Take a boat trip to Ile Aux Cerfs, a beautiful quiet island that offers watersports and golf courses but also enjoy a thrill at the Casela World of Adventures.

You can also take a dolphin-watching excursion here before taking a rum distillery tour.

Of course, Egypt is another one of the best places to visit in Africa. Known for its iconic pyramids, Egypt offers plenty of historic landmarks, attractions, culture, food, and accommodation choices. 

When planning a trip to Egypt , you must visit Cairo. Cairo is a bustling place to start but is where you can find the Pyramids of Giza and the Nile River.

Explore the Egyptian museum in Tahrir Square, where you can find treasures of Tutankhamun also learn more at the Coptic Cairo. 

Whilst in Cairo, you can also explore the historic district of Islamic Cairo, home to medieval alleyways and interesting mosques, but also discover Khan el-Khalili Bazaar whilst you are in this area of the city. We recommend spending at least 3 days in Cairo to see all the best sites and landmarks.

Then head over to Luxor to explore the Valley of the Kings and the Karnak Temple Complex. Take a tour of the Luxor Temple and then learn more about the city and history of Egypt at the Luxor Museum.

Morocco 

Morocco is another must-visit destination in Africa.

Marrakech is a bustling city with a picturesque, unique old city center and a vibrant, fun market. Head to the mosque, forts, and palaces in the city but then head out to see the natural beauty outside of the city too, such as the Ouzoud Falls and desert. 

Take a camel trek or try out a desert camp in the Sahara Desert, for a unique experience in Morocco.

Spend time visiting the ancient city of Fes, known for its historic mosques, vibrant Fes el-Bali Medina, and medieval architecture. 

Whilst in Morocco, you could also visit the Atlas Mountains, hiking up to those amazing views or visiting the Berber villages for an interesting experience. 

This small, landlocked destination in Africa is a beautiful place to explore, offering diverse wildlife, a gorgeous lake, and incredibly friendly people.

Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world and you can enjoy kayaking and sailing along the lake before soaking up some sun on the white sandy beach. Cape Maclear is a popular place to visit on the lake too. 

Malawi offers plenty of hiking and trekking options, so head to Mulanje Mountain, Nyika Plateau, and Zomba Plateau for stunning views and wildlife spotting. 

You could go on safari at Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve to see elephants in their natural habitat but also try to visit the Mulanje Tea Estates to learn about tea cultivation and processing in the country. 

For crystal clear waters and pristine beaches, Seychelles is the place to visit in Africa for you. Beyond relaxing on the beach, why not appreciate the incredible coral reef and marine life; with snorkel and dive trips offering you a chance to see colorful fish, rays, turtles, and even whale sharks? 

This is another destination perfect for honeymooners, with many luxury resorts that often include private villas and overwater bungalows.

Iam not here to say more or less, if you are a Nigerian and you have never lift Nigerian before. Please ? is better you don’t say less of Nigeria. Am a Nigerian and I have travelled to alot of countries. I have been treated like a no body. You don’t get freedom that you get from Nigeria. Zimbabwe, with attractions in almost every region, has a very developed tourism industry and is the 5th most visited country in Africa (Statista, 2019, link below). Hwange National Park, in the west of the country, has one the highest concentrations of elephants, African painted dogs and lions in the world. The Eastern Highlands, with three mountain groups (Nyanga, Bvumba and Chimanimani) is an ecoregion home to distinct grasslands, woodlands and forests and has the second highest waterfall in Africa. Lake Kariba, to the north, the world’s largest man-made lake has a large concentration of gamefish, particularly tigerfish, fish eagles patrolling its shorelines and big game on the southern Matusadona National Park. Gonarezhou National Park, to the south, has large tracts of pristine wilderness and lives up to its name which means “Place of the Elephants” with plenty more game. The most well known and Instagrammable feature of the park is the Chilijo Cliffs.

In-between and across the country, Zimbabwe boasts five World Heritage Sites: (1) Victoria Falls (of course) which can be seen all year (both wet and dry seasons) from the country’s vantage points. The town’s airport capacity, which tripled in 2016 to handle 1.7m passengers annually, makes it more accessible. The Victoria Falls Marathon has one of the most scenic routes in Africa. (2) Mana Pools National Park, one of the world’s wildest and best preserved ecological areas, is also a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance. The park is home to a remarkable concentration of elephants, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, lions, hippopotami, African painted dogs and Nile crocodiles. (3) Great Zimbabwe, a medieval city inhabited from the 9th century to the 15th century which gave the country its name. Across an area of 7.3 sq km, these ruins are the second largest in Africa after the pyramids in Egypt. (4) Matobo National Park has over 3,000 registered San rock art sites (one the highest in the world) with Bambata Cave being a major archeological site. People have interacted with these hills for over many millennia, fostering strong local religious beliefs and an almost uninterrupted association between humans and their environment over the past 100,000 years. That association continues to this day with white rhino walking safaris, popular in the park, are very much a spiritual experience. (5) Khami, a ruined city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Butua between the 15th and 17th centuries. The site has beautifully decorated 6m high walls which bear checkerboard designs across their entire length.

I could go on and include the National Art Gallery in Harare which has remarkable Shona sculpture collections. It may come as a surprise but Pablo Picasso was most certainly influenced by Zimbabwe’s Shona stone sculptures (the gallery’s first director was a close friend of his). However, I’ll stop here and encourage you to examine Picasso’s artwork to notice the striking similarities with Shona art. Thanks.

The roads are horrible.

All my bones ached badly, and for a journey that should take 4 hours, it took us 8 good hours. It was that bad, travelling from Ilorin to Patigi.

Since I got here, I have not been able to keep up with my online business that much, because there is NO LIGHT.

How is that okay?

No light, no water.

I suffered terribly the time I got here. I am just getting used to the situation of things and all. But that doesn’t mean things are getting better. They’re getting worse.

The bloodshed is much. The internet fraud is huge. Nigeria currently isn’t the best place to visit in Africa. Except you have the resources to stick to the luxurious places, have a tight security etc, and how is that for fun. It could as well pass for a formal function.

You lose the pleasure and joy when you are so damn security conscious.

I know stories. I don’t just want to say more.

I believe we will be better soon. I believe Nigeria will rise to become one of the most sought for in the world. I do. But till then, keep awake, and try to stays safe.

PS: I’m having thoughts of leaving Nigeria to another African country. Which would you suggest? I’m looking at a place with lots of potential, good living conditions, and economy.

There are so many African countries you can move to. I am a Nigerian and I can relate to the recent happenings in the country.

You can stay in Visa free countries like Ghana or Benin Republic. I would recommend Benin because I met some Nigerians there in Dantokpa market (igbos) and Fidjrosse too. However, Benin is francophone but some understand english especially when you live among the Nigerians.

According to the 2021 Global Peace Index by the Vision of Humanity organization, the best part is ranked # 10 among the safest African countries, so that’s an added benefit.

However, hearing about things like kidnapping, ransom, and armed robbery on the Lagos-Kaduna train – this makes you raise an eyebrow about safety as a solo tourist. Please see our previous comments about why Nigeria did not make the list.

Great little List. With so many countries it is certainly difficult to narrow it down. I think you have done a tremendous job.

Rightfully SA is often seen as the gateway to Africa and is at the top of the list. I personally think Namibia is very beautiful and a unique country in this big world and for travellers who are coming to SA it is easy to combine these 2 countries if you are spending a few weeks in Southern Africa.

Be sure to take a trip up to Vic Falls too.

What do u think that ivory coast is not also part of those top vacation country plse u need to revisits this listing.

oh i really love going to africa well i haven’t been to other countrie like kenya or ethiopia but i do love ghana and i had alot of fun in nigeria(benin kingdom..lagos..abuja etc.)so i was wondering why isn’t nigeria included?…my point is nigeria lacks electricity and has bad roads but is still one of the best country in africa and their culture is delightful i mean i can’t stop thinking you have something against that country…i mean why else would you not include africa number one country???

You state that Namibia is a country that “leaves plenty to be desired.” But the statement of leaving plenty (or, alternatively, much) to be desired is used to express that something is lacking; it’s insufficient. It needs work. Did you mean to say it HAS much to be desired? That would make far more sense in relation to your recitation of the variety of offerings the country brings.

Your comment about Namibia; namely, “the sheer size of Namibia leaves plenty to be desired from the untamed wilderness and rich wildlife of this beautiful country,” was surely meant as a compliment but the phrase “leaving plenty (or alternatively, much) to be desired” is really an expression that something is inadequate, insufficient; lacking. It’s a soft insult to express something needs improvement rather than stated that something is flawed, but it is by no means a laudatory statement.

• They either don’t require a visa or getting one is super easy -> use iVisa.com to get your visa.
• Planning your trip from the US is easy. You can plan the major parts of your trip before you get there. Use Booking.com for your hotel and TripAdvisor for your activities.

Tips: I recommend having only your must-have activities planned out, so you have some flexibility when you get there.

I have not personally visited Ghana but my sister has so am sure I can get the information you need from her and share it with you. Ghana is great for experiencing the real African culture. However, it doesn’t have the best safari experience. East and Southern Africa have the best safari on the continent with Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe taking the lead in those regions.

So, it really depends on what you want to do. If going on a safari is on your must-do list and you want some culture, I would recommend Kenya or Botswana . Hello Najivunia, I couldn’t agree more! We got back from our East African trip a few days ago and enjoyed our stay in Kenya . You are very hospital people, and I loved the food and activities. I gained 20 lbs in 6 weeks!!! Now, I have to hit the gym, but it was well worth it.

P.S. – You’ll have to watch your back because your sister country, Tanzania , is really upping their game. But they have a ways to go. BTW, the view of Mt. Kilimanjaro is still better from Kenya 😉

Hello Dr. Peter, I respectfully disagree. This is the third comment I’ve received about adding Nigeria to the list so I want to list a few reasons why Nigeria didn’t make the cut:

• Getting a visa to Nigeria is a pain; they want you to come physically to the embassy to get a visa. For anyone living out of state, that’s time and money that get expensive. The last time we visited, we had to use an agency to get our visa and it cost us $350 each. In contrast, we applied for our visa online for Kenya! It was stress-free and we got approval in less than 48 hours and it only cost us only $50 when we applied directly to the Kenyan embassy. For a hassle-free visa experience, iVisa can help you get most visas to Africa . Also, the Nigerian embassy in D.C and New York were not operational for several months; 5 months the last year. I’m not sure what the current status is.
• A lot of places in Nigeria do not have basic services that American or international travels will expect without paying a fortune for it. For example, lack of steady electricity, bad roads, even the US Uber app doesn’t work (as of the last time we traveled) so we had to have a friend help us order Uber using their own “local” app.
• Lack of security is huge. I don’t feel safe traveling to Nigeria with all the insecurity. I would advise against traveling to Nigeria especially now with more unemployed youth. It was bad before but now, it’s getting worse.

So, the next time someone else says “Nigeria should be on the list,” please provide 3 reasons why it’s better than the other counties on this list. Thanks!

You are being sentimental, Uber, Bolt and Opay rides all work in Nigeria so that’s a big lie, in terms of electricity Nigeria doesn’t have constant electricity but it depends on the city you visited that’s if you actually did, Nigeria is one of the countries with the best roads in Africa and one of the most expensive roads we are y’all of roads that each Kilometer costs #6.2 billion naira that’s more than $15 million dollars per kilometer, I bet all those countries you listed above apart from Egypt and South Africa can afford the Lagos Island bridge the longest in west Africa, imagine Lagos as the smallest state in Nigeria has the fourth Largest Economy in Africa if it were to be a Country it would be richer than those countries you mentioned.. Lolzz. Truth is, as a Nigerian ,living in Nigeria ( Abuja ,city center) for that matter, I don’t even feel remotely safe, and I discourage my family and friends from visiting till further notice. We need to be honest.

Getting a visa in Nigeria depends on so many things and can’t really say much about that for now. For security all countries has this same issues, incredible India has challenges with security but people still visit there. It is important you get a good tour guide and he plan all for you to make it lovely. Nigeria is still the best country you can visit in Africa…

Well I totally disagree with you on this. Firstly, you said “the Nigerian embassy in DC and New York weren’t functional last year”. Well, we all know how bad the pandemic was for the tourism industry last year. The Nigerian embassy in DC was not functional obviously due to COVID-19. Secondly,There are Places in Nigeria with basic amenities as good as places in the USA. Maybe you haven’t been to the newly built Eko Atlantic in Lagos, Nigeria. There are also places like VI and ikoyi where tourist can stay. I wouldn’t deny that we lack of electricity is a great deal in Nigeria in some parts of Nigeria, but then, there are still places where we have it in abundance. And we also have other electricity facilities to satisfy the needs and convenience of tourists. I bet you won’t go to a place as a tourist and be allowed to stay without electricity. The Transportation app Uber works so well and taxify app which is also an alternative works so well here too and are very much affordable. You also talked about security issues. The truth is;there are security issues everywhere in the world. However, the way they’re been manage differs and the location also matters. And for your information, There are states with no security issues in Nigeria. Example is lagos. Nigerian youths are also known for their hardwork and excellence. in the sense that, we do not need to be employed to be relevant. They venture into small scale and tech businesses that help them survive. If it was as bad as you stated, everyone living here would be dead by now and people from citizens of the US, Europe, etc wouldn’t be coming here to become an expatriate. Although we stand by our decision about Nigeria not making the cut for being one of the best countries to visit in Africa (re: our points above), Nigeria is a country that is rich and diverse with so much to offer. I really like Kenya and Tanzania, others like Morocco, Egypt, Madagascar, Ethiopia and Cape Verde look super cool too, but yes so many beautiful countries, the great lakes region looks awesome as well, it’s unfortunate that some countries have political and economic issues as I’ve known many great people from countries like Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, and others, i think Kenya would be my 1st pick to visit

Kenya is a great choice but if you plan to work from Kenya while you’re visiting, consider the time difference. We live on the West Coast, and it was brutal for us to work from Kenya (using PST time zone) because we had an extended trip (6 weeks). For that reason, I would recommend people go to Morocco instead if they’ll be working on their trip. The time difference will work in your favor.

I made a promise to my 78 year old mother that I would take her to Africa before she or I died. I’m 59 & she’s 78, this will be our first time traveling to the Mother Land from New Orleans Louisiana. Your article provided me with pertinent details about each area of the continent has to offer its tourist. Due to both of our physical mobility issues I am lending more towards Ghana. With the historical slave trade documented evidence I think this would be the best choice for my family.

Hello James, Nigeria is not one of the easiest or safest African countries so I wouldn’t recommend it to most people only if you have a trusted family member that can help you with all the quirks before and after your arrival.

The 2021 Global Peace Index was just released, and Nigeria is ranked 146 out of 163 countries globally. Put differently, it’s ranked the bottom 6th of all countries in the world based on peace. So I know Nigeria has a lot of culture and great food and people, but we can’t underemphasize the safety of the people considering visiting the country. We want our readers to be informed to make an educated decision about the African country that best fits their needs.

Thanks for sharing your thought! Yeah, we love traveling around the world and also experiencing other countries’ cultures. However, Africa is in its own class since there are so many things to do, so there’s always something for everyone.

If you’ll enjoy a safari, any of the Southern African countries is the way to go. I would go with Botswana since it’s safe and is ranked one of Africa’s best safari places.

If you like the beach, then Eastern Africa is where you should look. Tanzania and Kenya have great beaches; however, my first choice will be Zanzibar in Tanzania. It will take tour breath away.

If you enjoy culture, then you’re looking at West Africa. There’s a lot to learn about colonization and the slave trade, and a more exciting part of history. Ghana and the Gambia are great choices, but Ghana is the way to go!

If you like the outdoors, then you’ll enjoy North Africa. Morocco is a good first place to visit. You can do dunes bugging, which is a lot of fun, and walk around the street markets.

If you’re visiting Africa for the first time, I recommend you visit a place that’s safe, has good transportation, and reliable internet. Most African countries are full of culture so you can’t go wrong there. If it was my first time and I don’t know a local in that country, I’ll go to Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, or Cape Town. I absolutely loved Zimbabwe, and from there you can take a tour to Botswana for safaris near the border, best time of my life, the border also takes you to Zambia, the problem is Zimbabwe requires visas for most countries and it’s difficult to obtain, Also enjoyed Southafrica, but as you say it’s more a western city. Democratic Republic of Congo was plagued by war but original.

Africa is the best destination trip you can take, congrats on the very accurate comments you make.

Someone listed alot of places that could be tourist centers in Nigeria. Like seriously??? Aso rock?? What exactly can one do in Aso rock??? And most of the places listed are not even kept in good shape. Nigeria has lots of potential but that’s not enough to put it on this list. Our roads are in horrible states, i don’t even want to mention the daily kidnapping and killings. Oh please! Thanks to the publisher for excluding Nigeria from the list. Maybe sometime in the future, when the country becomes what it’s supposed to be.

6 Beautiful Lesser-Known Tourist Attractions In Africa

Africa is a wealth of natural, historical, and cultural wonders. Many travelers will know the popular tourist destinations on the continent: South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Egypt’s Pyramids, Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, Kenya’s Masai Mara, and Zambia’s Victoria Falls; all of which are of course incredible places to visit. But have you heard of a village built on stilts over a lake in Ghana, or the 12th-century stone-cut churches of Ethiopia, or Malawi’s highest mountain?

If you have been drawn to this article, there’s a good chance that you’ve either already visited the continent’s most well-known attractions, or you’re looking for a trip to Africa that is a little more off the beaten track.

But Africa is a vast continent, and deciding where to go and what to see can be overwhelming, so I’ve narrowed it down to my pick of the 6 less-traveled African destinations that are worthy of a spot on your bucket list.

1. Draa Valley, Morocco

At 680 miles long, the Draa is Morocco’s longest river and lends its name to the Draa Valley. Ancient farming villages and farming communities line this river, and the area is known for its date farming, and production of cereals, vegetables, and henna. The valley is also famous for its ancient kasbahs, fortresses that were used for defense when cities came under attack. These kasbahs also doubled as houses for local leaders and were built with high walls for protection. The Valley stretches from the city of Ouarzazate to the Sahara Desert in the south of Morocco .

The Draa valley peters out near the settlements of Zagora and Tinfou, where a curiously lone sand dune sits, in the middle of a vast gravel plain. Here you will find a sign reading “Tombouctou 51 jours,” translating to “Timbuktu fifty-one days” – 51 days by camel that is – a measurement dating back to the days when Morocco controlled all the way across the Sahara Desert and into Mali.

2. Nzulezo, Ghana

Some 224 miles – about a 7-hour drive – west of Ghana’s capital, Accra, lies the village of Nzulezo. Nzulezo is located on Lake Tandane, part of the Amasuri Wetlands, a sensitive ecosystem that is home to an impressive array of flora, fauna, and countless rare birds. The town is nestled in a mangrove forest and is only accessible by canoe from the coastal town of Beyin. Nzulezo’s estimated 600 inhabitants are farmers, fishermen, or brewers of the famous, local alcoholic “gin,” “akpeteshi.” Nzulezo is the only village in Ghana built entirely on stilts and is often referred to as “Ghana’s Venice.”

According to legend, the ancestors of Nzulezo’s modern-day inhabitants were from the ancient Ghana Empire in today’s Mali. In the 15th century, after a war fought over fertile land and gold, they were forced to flee. Legend has it that their god appeared as a snail and led them to today’s Ghana. Continuously forced to move onwards by other tribes or by slave traders, they followed their god until finally reaching Lake Tandane. Here they remained, feeling the lake would protect them against enemies and also provide them with food. 

Nzulezo depends on tourism. One of the highlights of a visit to this town is the actual journey to get here. After driving as far as the unpaved road allows, a short walk takes you to your canoe, and an hour’s canoe ride takes you through narrow, lush channels, open plains, and finally into the wide expanse of Amansuri Lake (the ride is safe and lifejackets are available). If you are staying at one of the beaches in the Western Region, such as Busua or Axim, the visit to Nzulezo can easily be done as a day trip. Anyone wanting to “live like the villagers” can stay at the Home Stay guest house, but don’t expect modern standards.

Pro Tip: There is a fine line between tourism and invading the local resident’s personal space – do ask before you take photos, and check behind you before posing for a selfie, in case some scantily clad person is trying to take a bath in the lake – most of the town does not have indoor running water.

3. Mount Mulanje, Malawi

Mt. Mulanje lies to the east of Blantyre, the main city in southern Malawi. Mulanje is an impressive sight to see, and its summit, Sapitwa Peak is the highest point in Malawi at 9,850 feet.

Mt. Mulanje is known locally as the “island in the sky” because it rises almost straight up from the flat plains below. This is a truly magnificent mountain and has to be seen to be appreciated. Unlike some of the world’s peaks that are obscured by surrounding ranges, here there is a genuine sense of awe as you draw closer to Mulanje and see it looming over its surroundings. The area boasts a variety of wildlife including small mammals and several bird species including the black eagle and countless white-necked ravens.

Visitors can drive around the foot of the massif in a day, but even better is to walk, trek, hike, and camp on the mountain. There is a large network of paths and trails and choices between quite gentle walking and serious climbing. Visitors can spend a couple of hours taking a walk to some river pools and waterfalls or spend many days exploring the whole massif.

Crafted Africa offers a great 9-night ‘Walk Malawi’ tour that includes Mount Mulanje and a number of other spots in this beautiful country. Alternatively, Mulanje town, at the base of the mountain, has shops and services, as well as a colonial-era “sports club” (complete with golf course) and a handful of hotels and guest houses, the best of which is Africa Wild Truck Camp & Lodge , who offer a variety of accommodation, in a converted colonial building, and can also organize Mulanje hikes using local guides and porters. A half-hour journey from Mulanje some lovely accommodation is offered at Huntingdon House on the Thyolo Tea Estates .

Pro Tip: Unsurprisingly for a vast, foreboding, and sometimes unforgiving mountain, local myths and legends abound around Mulanje, and visitors are well-advised to keep the mountain’s spirits “appeased” in the hope of a successful ascent!

4. Lalibela, Ethiopia

Lalibela in northern Ethiopia is known for its distinctive rock-hewn churches that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. These churches are ancient pilgrimage sites for Coptic Christians and are still used for services today. Carved out of rock, there are eleven medieval churches, many of which are linked by underground tunnels and trenches and with some containing bas-relief and colored frescos. These unique churches include the majestic Bete Medhane Alem, home to the Lalibela Cross, and the cross-shaped Bete Giyorgis, the last of the 11 churches to be built. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Pro Tip: Lalibela is currently embroiled in the fighting between government and rebel forces from Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region; the rebels have taken the city, surrendered the city, retaken it, and re-surrendered it. Whilst this incredible place should definitely be on your list of places to visit, perhaps hold off on planning your trip for a little while.

5. Valley Of Desolation, South Africa

Situated in South Africa ’s Camdeboo National Park, the Valley of Desolation, sometimes referred to as the “cathedral of the mountains,” is a hauntingly beautiful place of gaping chasms flanked by astounding rock formations, precariously balanced giant dolomite rocks, and pillars that drop sharply by 400 feet to the valley floor below. Looking out from the rocky peaks that formed over 100 million years ago by a violent volcanic shift, all one sees seems to be an immense terrain of nothingness, and where even the quietest of whispers echoes in the still Karoo air.

The Valley of Desolation is a haven for campers and hikers, and home to a variety of plant and animal life, including 220 species of birds, 336 plants, and 43 mammals, highlights include the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra, the majestic Black Eagle, and the world’s heaviest flying bird, the Kori Bustard.

All this incredible natural wonder is just a 9-mile drive from South Africa’s fourth oldest town, Graaff-Reinet, in the Eastern Cape. You have a choice of scenic picnic sites, and for those with a little more energy, there are three hiking trails that range from 1 hour in duration to overnight hikes. Be sure to bring your camera!

Pro Tip: Those who want to maximize their experience can try the Crag Lizard Trail, a well-marked walk beginning in the parking lot that takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.

 6. Gorilla Trekking In The Congo

The Republic of the Congo, not to be confused with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which shares a similar name and a border, is safe to travel to. It’s definitely not as well-known as other countries in Africa, but its pristine tropical forests make it a one-of-a-kind destination.

The beautiful Odzala-Kokoua National Park sits right in the heart of the Congo Basin and is one of the most remarkable gems in West Africa. Once home to nearly 20,000 gorillas , poaching has sadly reduced their numbers drastically, but Odzala-Kokoua is still home to the largest population of gorillas anywhere on the continent. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

SA’s premier wildlife reserve welcomes approximately 1 million visitors each year.

There are caps on the number of visitors that may enter the park each day, to maintain its ecological authenticity.

The Kruger is located across two of the country’s provinces, Mpumulanga and Limpopo.

It is South Africa’s largest wildlife reserve, covering an area of 19 624 square kilometers.

It is home to a large collection of fauna and flora species, including the Big 5. 

USHAKA MARINE WORLD

This marine-themed adventure park is home to the largest aquarium in the southern hemisphere.

The aquarium houses hundreds of marine animals including turtles, sharks, fish, penguins, seals and dolphins.

Ushaka includes a water park, a beach, restaurants, shops, a reptile park and an adventure park, all situated across 16 hectares.

Ushaka draws around 800 000 visitors per year.

I’ve found Africa’s best-value safari holiday

Malawi is half the cost of hot spots like tanzania and zambia — but there’s nothing cut-price about the wildlife, lodges and guides, our writer discovers.

C hoosing the best tree to climb is never easy, especially when your life depends on it. “This one could be good,” suggested Nelio Stewart, an experienced rhino tracker, who assesses tree trunks in the same way a safety officer might mark out emergency escape routes.

The sturdy, broad-boughed tamarind ahead of us certainly looked scalable, despite the trails of army ants and swarming bees. Smirking at me, Stewart added: “They won’t be a problem when there’s a black rhino on your tail.”

According to the team of experienced trackers in Malawi’s Majete Game Reserve, 80 per cent of scouting missions end in some form of tree scrambling. Never have I wanted more to be in the minority.

Native to the region, black rhinos became locally extinct in the 1980s due to rampant poaching. But a successful reintroduction programme started in 2003 has spawned a healthy new population, carefully monitored by a team so attuned to the animals’ behaviour they can even identify individuals by their spoors.

It’s one of several good news stories unfolding in the protected areas of Malawi, where rewilding efforts are quietly transforming the developing east African country into a respectable safari option. Despite being landlocked, sparkling beaches fringe Lake Malawi — one of the deepest lakes in the world — presenting opportunities for a beach and bush break.

Last month’s decision to waive visas for 79 countries, including the UK, is part of the government’s ambitious plan to put tourism on a par with countries such as neighbouring Zambia and Tanzania. Malawi is lesser known than these wildlife giants, and safari holidays remain considerably cheaper at an average £3,000 for seven nights — almost half the price of an equivalent trip elsewhere.

Several days earlier, I’d flown into the business hub Blantyre in southwest Malawi via Johannesburg. (There are no direct flights from the UK, although the Malawian government is in discussion with several airlines about the possibility of intercontinental flights.) Only a 90-minute drive away, making it a popular weekend getaway for the city’s expats, Majete is emerging as one of the country’s flagship wildlife destinations due largely to the efforts of African Parks, a conservation NGO that works in partnership with governments to manage their wildlife resources.

When it signed a mandate with the Malawian government for Majete in 2003, all elephants, rhinos and large carnivores had disappeared. Not a single tourist had visited the park in three years. But the reintroduction of 17 species has transformed it over the past 21 years; according to a 2022 census there are 12,000 animals. Now elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes, cheetahs and wild dogs can all be seen, and tourist numbers exceed 13,000 per year.

“The story of absolute destruction and hope is one that has impressed people over and over again,” said the park manager, John Adendorff, driving back from our early morning rhino trek, which (somewhat thankfully) had been fruitless. A blueprint for rewilding and regeneration of biodiversity, Majete’s success has inspired multiple African governments and the non-profit now manages 22 reserves in 12 countries across the continent, providing employment for more than 5,000 staff.

A hilly landscape of 270 sq m smothered in thick bush and woodland, with extremes of rainfall and temperature, Majete has not been an easy environment or climate to work in. “We come out of Cambodia and go into the Sahara desert,” Adendorff joked. “It changes drastically.”

Although regular tourists can’t track rhino, it is possible to see the endangered animals on game drives or from hides, including a rustic overnight option at Nakamba Hide, which self-drive visitors can book directly through African Parks, although you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bags (one night’s self-catering from £79pp; africanparks.org).

Staying at Thawale Lodge, the unfenced eight-tent camp managed by African Parks, set in the reserve’s core release area known as the Sanctuary, I had plenty of close wildlife encounters. I woke up to impalas and nyalas nibbling fruits from my veranda, ate a healthy lunch of salad and grilled chicken while a herd of elephants slurped at a watering hole just a few feet from my table, and cooled off in the afternoon by dipping my toes in a bio pool swimming with endemic cichlid fish. At £175pp per night full board, including game drives, this is less than half the price of a similar lodge in Kenya or Tanzania, and all profits made here are reinvested into the reserve.

At night, I watched lion shadows slink between the leadwood and ebony trees surrounding the camp and drifted off listening to distant roars. One evening those dreamy apparitions became a startling reality when two brawling male lions crashed into our sundowner at a viewpoint overlooking the Shire River. Standing on a picnic table with only an iPhone torch for defence, I battled the instinct to run and did the only other thing I could think of in that situation — I hid behind someone else (in this case, the tourism manager, Emmanuel Kandiero).

Since their reintroduction to Majete in 2012, lion numbers have soared from seven to over 70, illustrating the challenges of managing an enclosed wildlife area. With 80,000 people living within three miles of the park boundaries at risk of losing crops and livestock to animals, fencing has been a key factor in winning the trust of communities, and crucial to Majete’s success.

It’s a similar situation in Liwonde National Park, also managed by African Parks, a six-hour drive north. Sliced by the Shire, palm-dotted floodplains and mopane woodlands provide a backdrop for reintroduced rhinos, lions and cheetahs.

When I arrived, the scene was dynamically different from the predator-free park I’d visited seven years previously, where hippos lazed in the water and impalas gaily bounded across lawns. Yet there were still fewer tourists than I’d expect to find in a prime safari destination.

“Our cats keep us busy,” joked my guide, David Owen, from Mvuu Camp, a waterside lodge with a mixture of 14 upmarket stone or canvas chalets with polished wooden interiors and bright kitenge fabrics framed by swollen baobab trees. At £219pp a night full board, with above-average meals including homemade pizzas and plates piled with fresh vegetables, it’s a relative bargain. Even more affordable is African Parks’s self-catering Chimwala Bush Camp on the other side of the park (easily accessible from a separate gate), with self-catering rates in an en suite tent from £60pp per night. Bring your own food, and two in-house chefs will store and prepare it for you.

There’s nothing cut-price about the safari experience, though. I watched a coalition of five cheetahs fade into a purple sunset, observed lions stalking antelopes, and listened to monitor lizards noisily mating like tree-hammering woodpeckers.

“You can go to the Serengeti and stay in places that make other people wealthy, but in these parks, every last cent you spend goes back into conservation,” Adendorff had said to me. “If more people knew where their money was going and how they were supporting this incredible recovery, Malawi could be one of the top destinations in Africa.”

He’s right. Finding an affordable, crowd-free safari destination is almost as hard as tracking down a black rhino. Estonia is a European dream.

I was immediately captivated by the fairy-tale appearance of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Walking the cobblestoned streets within the fortress-like walls of the old city transported me back to medieval times.

The city is small enough to explore on foot, and there's plenty to entertain history and architecture enthusiasts. Enjoying a coffee or a beer in the Town Hall Square while people watching is a highlight of my European travels.

Although many people visit Tallinn as a day trip from Helsinki, which is a two-hour ferry ride away, it's worth staying here for a few days and heading into the Estonian countryside. The roads are often quite empty and incredibly peaceful.

I enjoyed Estonia so much that I returned twice more in the 18 months after my first visit.

I've enjoyed visiting Oman, a country in the Middle East.

Dubai gets a lot of attention for its luxurious travel opportunities , and many know Qatar because it recently hosted the World Cup, but nearby Oman should not be skipped.

After all, Oman's capital, Muscat, provides an excellent gateway to the country.

A stroll along the beautiful Corniche will take you along the water and by the bustling Grand Bazaar. For those who love hikes, there are plenty of options in Oman, including several easily accessible trails in Muscat that offer great city views.

Better still, the amazing Wadi Shab is less than two hours from the capital city and is one of the best hikes I've ever experienced . The trail takes you through narrow gorges and across streams and ends with a surreal swim through incredible caves.

It's an experience so breathtaking I'd expected it to be packed with tourists, but it wasn't when we visited. We only saw a handful of people, which allowed us to really enjoy our trip.

I've seen many parts of Africa, but Namibia may just be my favorite spot.

I have been fortunate to go on safaris in Kenya , Botswana, and Tanzania, but Namibia is my favorite travel destination of the bunch.

While there, we rented a campervan and did a self-drive tour of the country, allowing us to explore independently. Yet again, we avoided the crowds and the campsites were usually just us and local animals.

Waking up to the sounds of monkeys, elephants, and even lions was a special treat, especially knowing we were safe inside our campervan.

In addition to the wildlife, there's a lot to explore in Namibia, including colossal dunes, which we hiked up and surfed down —undoubtedly the trip highlight for my children.

Sri Lanka showcases a lot of what Asia landscapes have to offer.

Asia has some beautiful beaches, but Sri Lanka has beaches and tea plantations, mountains, rocks, waterfalls, and more.

We visited Sri Lanka last year and hired a driver and guide who showcased the diverse landscapes of this island country. The food was terrific and extremely cheap — our family of four was fed for less than $10 on most occasions.

The locals I interacted with were incredibly friendly and the island is also small enough to allow for in-depth exploration in a relatively short time.

Costa Rica is an excellent place to visit in Central America.

Growing up in Texas, my wife has been to Mexico many times since the state shares a border with the country. But to explore somewhere new, smaller, and in the same region, we chose to have our honeymoon in Costa Rica .

Although it's still popular, Costa Rica offers an authentic travel experience as I feel it has yet to be overrun by tourists. Like the other countries on this list, it has a diverse landscape, from white-sand beaches to rainforests to volcanoes, so there's plenty to do.

We also visited during the rainy season, so we took advantage of low crowds , low prices, and often received upgrades — and, as a bonus, it rarely rained!

Tourist arrivals from South Africa up 38% on visa free plan

The easing of visa restrictions and enhanced travel trade partnerships are some of the strategies that have seen visitor arrivals from South Africa to Kenya record a 38 per cent growth.

The Southern African market by the end of last year registered 37,370 arrivals into the country compared to 27,103 in 2022, translating to a 38 per cent increase.

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) together with 16 Kenya tourism travel trade are currently pitching camp at South Africa’s World Travel Mart (WTM) in Cape Town city to woo travellers into the destination.

KTB CEO June Chepkemei says that the recent visitor arrivals paint an encouraging picture of the potential to further grow the market through strategic partnerships and initiatives that would cement ties and provide the impetus for more travel between the two countries.

"As we take part in the 2024 WTM Africa, we are excited by the tremendous growth witnessed from South Africa and the larger African market that has continued to be an important visitor source for Kenya," said Chepkemei.

This, she noted, is buoyed by a raft of recent developments including the waiving of entry fees for passport holders from South Africa and other African Nations aimed at boosting tourism and attracting business into Kenya.

“As part of our strategy to grow more numbers in Kenya, we are well aware that the African continent is a low-hanging fruit to focus on as we nurture our footprint in a highly competitive global tourism landscape.

"Africa has a population of about 1.2 billion people, if we harness this potential well, we this continent can fully sustain our tourism sector," she added.

Kenya is among the top destinations pitching at the three-day WTA Africa expo that is taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), Cape Town from April 10 to 12.

At least 7,500 participants drawn from various markets globally and across the continent are expected to participate in the annual event It is one of the six shows under the WTM portfolio aimed at bringing the benefits and opportunities of the global industry expertise to travel professionals in Africa.

According to the KTB CEO, air connectivity and the diversity of the destination offering has made Kenya a preferred destination for the South African traveller.

She lauded national carrier, Kenya Airways, for enabling seamless air connectivity between Nairobi and South Africa, with the national carrier operating direct flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

“We are keen to working with more partners so as to firmly stamp our presence in the region and showcase all the facets that make Magical Kenya a destination of choice," added the CEO.

After a string of successful marketing initiatives including roadshows in the West African markets of Nigeria and Ghana as well as a charm offensive targeting East Africa travellers during the recent WRC Safari Rally, KTB has its sights set on marketing Kenya to fully tap into all facets of the African travel market.

In the latest tourism performance report, Kenya attracted 1.96 million arrivals in 2023 with a majority or 41 per cent share coming from the African market.

KTB aims to grow Kenya's market share in Africa to six per cent, buoyed by the potential presented by key events like WTM Africa to make further inroads.
