When to Sail

Check out the following graph for more information on each destination’s high, shoulder, and low seasons.

Higher rates typically occur during peak cruising times, such as holidays or the summer months, when the destination’s weather is most ideal. In high season, be sure to book early due to the limited number of cabins.

Shoulder season is when weather conditions and pricing fall between high season and low season. Fares during this season are still very affordable, as it’s before high tourist season normally begins.

Fares often drop during low season, which is either early or late in the cruise season, such as May or September in Alaska or Europe. Many choose to take a chance on unpredictable weather for a more affordable vacation and fewer crowds.

* Please note : Holidays draw crowds, even in low seasons.

when to sail info

Alaska : High season is July–Aug; shoulder is June; low is April, May, and Sept; no sailings Oct–Mar.

Bermuda : High season is June–Aug; shoulder is April–May; low is Sept–Oct; no sailings Nov–Mar.

Canada/New England : High season is Sept–Oct; shoulder is July–Aug; low is May and June; no sailings Nov–April.

Caribbean : High seasons are mid Jan–April and June–Aug; shoulder is May; low is Sept–mid Jan.

Hawaii : High season is Nov–April; shoulder is May–Aug; low is Sept and Oct.

Mexico : High season is mid Oct–April, and Dec; shoulder is May; low is June–early Oct.

East/West Mediterranean : High season is June–Aug; shoulder seasons are Sep–mid Nov and April–May; low is mid Nov–Mar.

Northern Europe : High season is mid June–Aug; shoulder is Sep and beg. of June; low is April–May; no sailings Oct–Mar.

Destination by Season

Not sure what time of year is best for a cruise? Here are some helpful tips to get you started.

If you enjoy fall foliage, consider a September or October cruise to the east coasts of the U.S. and Canada. This is also a great time to sail to Europe, when you can beat the crowds and enjoy more moderate temperatures than the summer months. You'll also find less expensive sailings this time of year. (Note that early fall is hurricane season in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico; however, cruise lines can easily change course to avoid a storm.)

Exchange cold weather for some sun! Winter is a popular time to cruise to the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Spring-break cruises abound in the Bahamas and Mexico. In addition, spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. For Alaska, try late spring—an affordable time to go, as it's right before high season when prices go up.

Alaska attracts a high concentration of travelers in the summer months, but it's also a popular time to enjoy Europe's sights. And don't forget the kids! With school out for the summer, this is a convenient time to get the whole family together, especially in kid-friendly beach destinations like the Caribbean or the Bahamas.

How to Save

With meals, entertainment, and lodging already included, cruises are an excellent way to travel on a budget. Here are some extra tips to help you save when you sail.

Wave Season

No matter when you plan to sail, consider making your cruise booking between January and March, when cruise lines offer some of their best deals of the year.

Repositioning Cruises

Another great way to save is when a ship is in process of relocating between seasons. You can cruise for less and enjoy more days at sea. Note that any airfare purchased won't be roundtrip, as you will be flying into one destination and out of another.

If you're willing to chance unpredictable weather, consider cruising when rates drop and you can easily score the sailing date and cabin of your choice.

How to Choose Your Cabin

All cabins are classified as inside, oceanview, balcony, or suite . Before booking, consider the time you’ll spend in your cabin. If you want a spacious, relaxing space, you’ll likely want to opt for a larger oceanview, balcony, or suite. Plan to use it to just sleep and shower? An inside cabin might appeal to you.

  • Inside cabins are the smallest cabins, with no views, but are a good option for budget travelers. We do not recommend inside cabins for more than two guests.
  • Oceanview cabins have windows or portholes, and are great for those who prefer natural light and more space while still being economical.
  • Balcony cabins are ideal for those who seek a private outdoor space attached to their own room, where they can dine or just relax and take in the amazing views of destinations they visit.
  • Suites are generally the largest cabins onboard and offer the most exclusive amenities. They have windows and usually larger balconies, often with full dining tables. Some cruise lines even have a hot tub on your balcony or two bedrooms. Amenities vary from butler and concierge service to priority embarkation/disembarkation, dinner and spa reservations, and more.

The majority of cabins accommodate at least two guests; however, many cabins sleep more (often with pullman beds or sofa beds) to accommodate families or groups. Special large suites can accommodate as many as 14, such as Royal Caribbean’s Presidential Family Suite, featuring 4 bedrooms and a living room. For a more economical family option, we suggest connecting cabins. Keep in mind, cabins for 3 or 4 passengers and connecting cabins are limited and sell out quickly. (Specific occupancy details are listed on the cabin category page during the booking process.)

Cruise Ship

Cabin Location

Why do cabins with identical or similar descriptions vary in price? Typically, cabins located on higher decks and mid-ship are the most expensive because they have more balcony space and expansive views, and are easily accessible to outdoor public spaces and activities.

When choosing a cabin, consider the following:

  • Motion sickness : To avoid a queasy stomach, choose a cabin mid-ship on a lower level.
  • Proximity to public areas : Do you want to be by public areas such as the pool, entertainment areas, or the kids' clubs? Consider your preferences and choose a cabin near (or away from) these areas.
  • Noise : For a quieter location, a cabin that is both above and below other cabins—rather than above or below public areas like a basketball court or children’s areas—is a safe bet. Also avoid cabins that are low and in close proximity to the engine or anchor.
  • Mobility : Do you have mobility issues? Choose a cabin near an elevator for convenience.
  • Privacy : Do you want an exclusive feel to your cruise? Some cruise lines have cabins in private spaces with special restaurants and lounges, such as Norwegian Cruise Line's Haven and MSC Cruises' Yacht Club concept.
  • Forward-facing balcony cabins or suites are located at the front of the ship, allowing you the same views as the Captain.
  • Mid-ship balcony cabins or suites are located along the sides of the ship, and are the closest proximity to public areas and activities.
  • Aft balcony cabins or suites are at the very back of the ship. They offer 180-degree views of the ship’s wake, and the balconies are often larger in these cabins.

Booking Your Cruise

  • Inside cabins are generally the smallest cabins onboard and have no views, but are a good option if you are on a tight budget.
  • Oceanview cabins include windows or portholes and provide a view of ports visited.
  • Balcony cabins feature an ocean-facing balcony that offers a space to relax that is all your own.
  • Suites are the largest cabins onboard. They have windows and usually balconies, and offer the most amenities, often including exclusive butler or concierge service, and other special amenities.

Booking a Guaranteed Cabin quickly and easily secures a cabin in your selected category, but your exact room will not be assigned until the time of ship check-in. (Final cabin location, including deck, are at the total discretion of the cruise line.)

Changing or Cancelling Your Cruise

Most cruise lines allow you to cancel your cruise without a fee when done at least 91 days before departure. However, any shorter notice will likely result in fees. Cruise cancellation fees increase the closer to the departure date that a cancellation is made. Consult the cruise line's rules and regulations during booking for their specific cancellation fees and policies. You may also want to consider Cruise Travel Protection, which can reimburse you for cancellation penalties in case of medical emergencies.

Whether or not to purchase Cruise Travel Protection is an individual decision. However, it is recommended that you purchase Cruise Travel Protection in case illness or injury keeps you from traveling. If you need to cancel your trip because you, your immediate family, or your travel companion are too sick to travel, you can get reimbursed for your original trip cost. Cruise Travel Protection can also help you find a doctor or hospital in case of medical emergencies and can reimburse you for eligible medical expenses.

If you purchase Cruise Travel Protection and must cancel your cruise for a covered reason, you will be reimbursed for the cancellation penalty. The cost of the plan is nonrefundable. Please be sure to read the summary of coverage for terms, conditions, and plan sponsors.

You may be able to add another passenger, depending on the cabin's passenger capacity and the point at which you decide to add the passenger; however, there is no guarantee that the person can be added, or that the price will stay the same. If you would like to add another passenger, please call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978.

Cruise lines may not let you change a passenger's name, or sometimes even that name's spelling, after you complete your reservation and are inside of their penalty period. Changes like these can be costly, so please be absolutely certain that all passengers' names are listed exactly as they appear on their proof of citizenship (passports or government-issued photo IDs and birth certificates).

Payment/Receipt

If your cruise departs more than 60 days in the future, you can usually choose to book with only a deposit. If you choose to make a deposit, your confirmation email will provide your final payment due date.

After you book your cruise, you will receive a confirmation email that will let you know when your final payment is due and how to pay online. You may also call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978 to make your final payment. Keep in mind that if you are not paid in full by the final due date, the cruise line can cancel your reservation and will not refund you for any payments you've already made.

If your payment card is not accepted, verify that you entered the card number, expiration date, and billing address correctly. If you are still having trouble, call your credit card company to make sure you haven't exceeded any daily credit limits. If your card is still not accepted, please call a Cruise Specialist for assistance at 1-888-249-3978.

You will notice this if you purchased Cruise Travel Protection. This charge will show up from Expedia, while the cost of the actual cruise and any cruise line airfare you may have purchased will show up as the charge from the cruise line.

Registration and Documents

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email from Expedia. If you only made a deposit while booking, the confirmation email will provide the final payment due date. Once you receive your confirmation, be sure to register online with the cruise line to view your itinerary, book shore excursions, and complete important paperwork that will speed up the embarkation process. You will receive your cruise documents and information (usually in email form) from Expedia prior to your sail date.

If you have booked a last-minute cruise, please call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978.

With Expedia, you can book a cruise up to 18 months in advance. By booking this early, you can find great cruise deals and get the cabin and sailing date of your choice.

Life Onboard

  • Documents : Be sure to pack your passport and travel documents.
  • Electronics : For items requiring electrical-outlet usage, such as hair dryers or cell phone chargers, note that most cabins are equipped with U.S. standard 110-volt outlets. Some cabins are also equipped with European standard 220-volt outlets.
  • Everyday Clothing : Pack with both your destination's climate and the cruise ship's dress code in mind. For Alaska, bring protective rain coverings. For the Caribbean, bring plenty of light, airy clothing and sunscreen.
  • Formal Clothing : If your ship has formal nights, men should bring a dark suit or tuxedo, and women should bring a pantsuit or cocktail dress. If you don't own these items, that's OK; most ships have casual dining venues, and some ships also have formal wear rental shops.
  • Forbidden Items : The following items are not permitted onboard: firearms, weapons of any kind, irons, candles, explosives, or animals (except service animals with permission from the cruise line).

Most ships recommend tipping around $10–$15 per person, per day, and many cruise lines automatically charge tips to your shipboard account (guests have the option to adjust this charge at the front desk). You also have the option to pay cash directly to the staff member.

  • Internet : Most ships have Internet access (for a fee), including Internet cafés, access from your cabin, or ship-wide wireless. Remember, Internet access at sea is not going to be as fast or reliable as land connections, and therefore may not be available at all times. For a faster connection, use the Internet at night or in port when other guests are ashore. For more details, check out the ship features on your cruise line's website.
  • Telephone : Most cabins offer telephones. If your cabin does not have a telephone (which is rare), the ship's radio operator can connect you to a mainland number in case of an emergency. Please keep in mind that making a ship-to-shore telephone call can be quite expensive, and it may be worth waiting to use a pay phone at the next port stop.
  • Mobile Devices : Some cruise lines offer onboard service, but reception may depend on your phone carrier. Watch out for expensive additional roaming or usage fees your cell phone provider may issue. To be safe, keep your cell phone off, or on airplane mode, to prevent charges from incoming text messages or roaming.

To check email or use social media, your best bet is to pay for access to the ship's computer stations. Another option is to find a free Wi-Fi location ashore, and download all your emails at no charge.

Laundry and dry-cleaning services are offered by most major cruise lines. Information about the service fees and procedures can be found in your cabin.

Smoking is usually allowed in limited designated areas, but not in most of the cabins, including your balcony, in the main dining rooms, or in most public areas. Cruise lines are strict about this policy and there can be cleaning fees or other penalties if you violate this. Consult the cruise line's general conditions, rules, and regulations for additional details about the cruise line's specific smoking policies.

Most cruise ships maintain a minimum drinking age of 21; however, a few may lower the drinking age to 18 when sailing from non-U.S. ports.

While doing your online registration with the cruise line, they will provide you with information about shore excursions (including photos, video clips, excursion difficulty, duration, and cost). We also recommend researching the options available through Expedia partner, Shore Excursions Group .

If the cruise line does not allow you to book an excursion online ahead of time, or if you choose not to, you can book onboard at the ship's shore excursion desk. Book early for the best selection, as some excursions sell out quickly.

  • All passengers must be onboard at least 60–90 minutes prior to departure. Check the individual cruise line's policies for final boarding times.
  • Check in at the pier with your proof of citizenship (passport or government-issued photo ID and birth certificate). Some itineraries may include countries requiring travel visas . Check the individual cruise line's policies for required documentation.
  • At this time, you'll also set up your onboard account for services and items purchased onboard.
  • Upon boarding, you'll be able to have a snack or a full lunch, explore the ship, or simply spend time in your cabin. Due to security reasons, passengers may not bring visitors onboard.

On the final night of the cruise, you'll have the option of placing your luggage outside your cabin door. If you don't set your luggage out, you'll be required to take it off the ship yourself. If you do leave your luggage out, be sure to keep any necessities in a carry-on bag, as your luggage will not be accessible until after you depart the ship.

If you want breakfast, you'll generally need to get up extra early. Passengers depart in groups. Your group information, along with any necessary customs forms, will be left in your cabin the night before you disembark. You'll be required to pass through customs as you depart the ship.

Disembarkation can take 2–3 hours. Please allow plenty of time to disembark the ship, go through customs, and get to the airport in time for check-in. We suggest you schedule your return flight to depart a minimum of 6 hours after you're scheduled to arrive in port.

First-Time Cruise Tips

Best Time to Book a Cruise : Wave Season (January–March) is when you'll score the year's top deals, including free perks (like upgrades & onboard credits) and discounted fares.

Avoid the Queasy Stomach : Sensitive to motion sickness? Choose a cabin on a lower deck, mid-ship.

Arrive Early at the Cruise Port : Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before your ship's departure time. If possible, fly to your embarkation city the night before in case of flight delays.

Get Onboard Spa Specials : If you're a spa seeker, look for specials on days the ship is in port. You can save up to 25%—a great way to kick-start a vacation!

Ask for a Wakeup Call : Most cabins don't have alarm clocks, so plan to bring your own, or request a phone wakeup call.

Celebrate Special Occasions : Celebrating a birthday or anniversary onboard? Preorder flowers, cakes, champagne, and more on your cruise line's website.

Check the Daily Onboard Schedule : The ship newsletter is delivered nightly to your cabin. Here, you'll find the next day's entertainment schedule, special events, dinner themes and attire, and other helpful tips.

Pose for Pictures : If you don't like lugging your camera around, don't worry! A professional photographer will be onboard to capture special moments, and the photos will be available for purchase at the end of your cruise.

Keep Essentials with You on Embarkation Day : When you hand over your luggage at the dock, it may take a few hours to be delivered to your cabin. Make sure you keep essentials like prescriptions, swimsuits, and sunscreen with you in a separate tote bag or backpack.

Plan Ahead : Popular shore excursions, spa treatments, and tables at specialty restaurants tend to fill up fast, so check your cruise line’s website to see how far in advance these can be booked.

Cruise Ship

Before You Leave

From booking your shore excursions to packing your bags, there's a lot to remember when preparing to leave for your cruise. Refer to this information to ensure a smooth departure. Things to Do If you booked a flight and/or hotel, be sure to confirm those reservations. Consider buying the Cruise Travel Protection to protect your vacation investment in case of injury or sickness. Complete the advanced registration information on the cruise line's website to reduce the check-in time at the pier. Be prepared to provide your reservation number, passport information, and other details to complete the registration. Research country entry requirements and apply for any necessary visas . Book airport transfers to the pier. If possible, do this several weeks prior to sailing. Inform friends and family of your travel plans and provide them with the cruise line's emergency phone number. Take care of arrangements for your home including houseplants, mail, newspapers, pets, last-minute bills, etc. Book your spa services, specialty restaurant reservations, and popular shore excursions as soon as possible. Some cruise lines allow you to do this online before you sail. Contact your bank to advise them of the countries and/or states you'll be visiting. Double-check with your mobile phone carrier about roaming charges in foreign countries. Be prepared with cash. It's handy to have cash in port and for parking at the pier. Most cruise ships have ATMs onboard; however, the ATM service fee may be significant. Cruise Packing List Pack efficiently, leaving enough room to bring home souvenirs. Most cruise ships offer laundry services, so you may not need to bring as many clothing items as anticipated. Check your cruise line for any dress code requirements. Most cruise lines have at least one formal night. Bring your travel documents (cruise ship itinerary and tickets, passports, personal identification, shore excursion confirmations, etc.) along with photocopies. It's also a good idea to have these items in a carry-on bag in case your luggage is lost. Pack everything you'll need for your first day onboard in your carry-on (medications, swimsuit, etc.), as it can take time for your luggage to be delivered to your room. Don't Forget: Sunblock Sunglasses Swimwear (bring a second swimsuit to allow for drying time) Formal wear (check cruise line for any dress code requirements) Comfortable walking shoes Climate-appropriate clothing, including items to layer Prescription medications A small backpack or tote to carry items around the ship or in port Camera with extra film or memory cards Books or magazines for days at sea Batteries or chargers for portable electronic devices Luggage tags Carry-on bag with essentials (you may arrive at your cabin prior to your luggage delivery) Passport and travel documents with photocopies Credit cards and cash

Cruise Ship

Getting to Your Ship

Upon arrival at the pier, you'll proceed through the embarkation process, making your way through customs and cruise ship check-in. Arriving at the Pier You can purchase round-trip transfers from the airport to the pier from most cruise lines, but if possible, we suggest doing this at least several weeks prior to sailing. If you are parking at the pier, be prepared with cash as many pier parking lots accept cash only. Get onboard as soon as possible to take full advantage of everything the ship has to offer. Ship boarding usually begins four to five hours before the ship is scheduled to depart. Embarkation All passengers must be onboard at least 90 minutes prior to departure. Otherwise, you risk being denied boarding. During embarkation, you'll likely need to show personal identification more than once, so have your passport and cruise documents in-hand to speed up the process. Be sure to change the settings on your cell phone to avoid roaming charges while at sea. Don't Forget: Directions from the airport or your hotel to the pier Airport shuttle or transfer reservations Passport, identification, and cruise documents Luggage and personal items Cash for taxi fare or parking

Cruise Ship

Onboard Health & Safety

Although many may not think about it when planning a trip, basic ship safety is an important part of a successful cruise vacation. Please take a moment to look over our cruise safety information for helpful tips on what to expect. What to know Plan to take part in the ship's safety, or muster, drill. This mandatory exercise informs passengers with the location and operation of life vests, as well as the emergency exit locations. The drill typically takes place before departure and all passengers are required to participate. Once onboard, take time to explore the ship. Although cruise ships offer ample directional signage and mapping, getting around can be intimidating at first. Here's a quick guide to get you turned in the right direction:     •  Bow : The most forward part of the ship     •  Stern : The rearmost part of the ship     •  Forward : Toward the bow of the ship     •  Aft : Toward the stern of the ship     •  Starboard : When facing forward, the right side of the ship     •  Port : When facing forward, the left side of the ship There are no lifeguards on duty at swimming pools onboard; parental supervision is required for children. Most ships have personal safes within each cabin to securely store your valuables. Health and Wellness All ships have doctors onboard to assist sick passengers. Familiarize yourself with the doctor's location and services. Visit the gift shop to see what items are sold in the event you require over-the-counter medications. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes—they will be very helpful for all the walking you'll be doing onboard and ashore. Don't Forget: Seasickness medications Personal medications/prescriptions Comfortable shoes

Shore Excursions

Venture to awesome sights far from the pier, skip the hassle of planning your own onshore activities, and learn more about an area from a local guide. Here are some great excursion tips to get you started. How to Book a Shore Excursion Prior to sailing, book through the Shore Excursions Group or with the cruise line directly. Or, once onboard, you can book at the Shore Excursions desk. Think about the type of shore excursion you are looking for. Excursions vary greatly, from active tours (zip-lining, dog-sledding, hiking, etc.) to sightseeing (typically bus tours that take you to your destination). You can also choose from full- and half-day tours, as well as exclusive tours with a limited number of guests. Many shore excursions sell out quickly, so book your excursions ahead of time to secure your reservations. Book online when possible. Cruise Excursion Tips Dress appropriately. Excursions may require you to wear swimwear, jeans, or walking shoes. You can ask the Shore Excursions desk onboard for advice on what to wear for your excursion. Remember, you aren't required to get off the ship on port days, so you can always choose to enjoy a quiet day onboard. This can be a great time to book that much needed spa appointment, too—you'll have the place to yourself! Don't Forget: Towels, swimwear, sunblock, and other appropriate essentials Cash, credit cards, and personal identification safely stored in a small bag or wallet Shore excursion tickets and logistics (meeting times and places, duration, etc.)

Cruise Ship

Disembarkation & Returning Home

Concluding your cruise vacation begins with the disembarkation process: the act of getting off the cruise ship. The following tips will help you prepare for the last day of your cruise. Before Disembarkation Begins Review your final onboard charges statement for accuracy. You can check your account information anytime throughout your cruise at the Guest Services desk, so consider settling up before the last day of your cruise to avoid lines. Look for service charges/tipping to appear on your statement. Many cruise lines charge an automatic fee per person, per day (usually $10–$15 per day) for the service received onboard. If your service was excellent, consider adjusting the tip to a higher amount. On the final night of the cruise, you'll have the option of placing your luggage outside your cabin door. If you don't set your luggage out, you'll be required to take it off the ship yourself. Properly label your bags for easy identification. Bag tags are provided by the cruise line. our disembarkation information, along with any necessary customs forms, will be left in your cabin the night before you disembark. Disembarkation Tipss If you want breakfast on disembarkation day, you'll generally need to get up extra early, so plan accordingly. Don't forget that carry-on bag! Assemble important information and items you'll need (contacts, sunscreen, wallet, etc.) for the last day in a separate bag that you'll take with you. Plan transfers from the pier accordingly. Disembarkation may occur up to three hours after the arrival of the ship due to immigration and customs. Some countries require a departure tax that is due at the airport upon leaving. These taxes are often payable in cash only, so be sure to read up on country-specific departure procedures so you have enough cash on hand. Don't Forget: Carry-on bag and luggage (if you choose to carry the luggage off the ship yourself) Completed customs forms Passport and personal identification Airplane tickets and/or hotel reservation information Airport shuttle or transfer reservations

Cool Cruiser

2/23/19 I was booking a cruise on Expedia and as a second check called their cruise assistance line. I was very clear that we wanted an outside obstructed view balcony. I had the same info up on my computer as they had and thought all was well. Booked, paid and got my receipt that said guaranty balcony.   Today I got a mail from RC cruise line about my "inside view balcony" and immediately started calling Expedia and RC to find the error. After 3 hours talking with a few people we are stuck and with the ship now full (5/18)  there is nothing they will do. Expedia conflict resolution people admit that their receipts need to be more clear when sent out. She even said she has been trying to get them to be better. They seem to agree with me and believe their booking agent made a "data entry mistake" as to the type of cabin. Expedia seems to have their own internal codes.    So we are headed to a cruise with a crappy inside balcony and are really feeling butt hurt. I always book online. Have no use for TA services. I only got on the phone with Expedia because I wanted to be sure and now I am screwed by Expedia IMO.    Don't bother telling me I should use a TA. I have done fine online for many years. I was all set booking online but the Expedia cruise TA said  she wanted to complete the booking on the phone. I figured it helped her job record.   Just be very careful and get solid verification with your receipt. Expedia only keeps their phone recordings for 60 days..It was a data entry mistake between XN and XB.   footnote: Expedia said they could put me in a upgraded balcony for $1600 more. After some talk I agreed to pay 1/3 of that but they said they could not... "not without proof" from me.    Just be very careful booking online and then dealing with people. Watch out for Expedia...their receipts and codes may get you burnt like us.

Thanks

Personally I am not impressed with Expedia,  but what is an inside balcony? Is it something particular to RC?

  • 2 weeks later...

On the Oasis class ships it is an inside  balcony that overlooks either a park, shops or a boardwalk type area to the interior. We were up 5-6 floors above the boardwalk. Had a good view into the cabins on the other side. At time it was loud with music etc. if you used the balcony. I imagine other larger ships might have them.

 Never again....

beaming90

Wow!  I don't think I would like that kind of balcony...

It's always a good idea to book a specific cabin number, so you can SEE where it is located on the deck plans!  I never book "blind" without deck plans in front of me.  The only time I'd do that is if I were to book a "suite guarantee"...as there really are no "bad" suites!

awhcruiser

Always double and triple check your cabin number/location before booking!

I do not use Expedia anymore.  Had a big problem with them several years ago.  Too many other choices out there.

I also was burned with inaccurate info from Expedia and try to never use them except for the flashing cabin feature on their deck plans. I use cruisedeckplans.com to slide the transparent decks over my deck when I plan in addition to cruise critic cabin reviews. YouTube sometimes as a video of your cabin. I try to be comprehensive.

Expedia's trash. At best they do almost nothing for you, at worst they cost you time, money, and/or enjoyment. They're just middlemen and they admit it

I looked at USAA, Costco and shopped 20x places.   Expedia had $100 dollars OBC per cabin.   I would have went with Costco that had 70 Costco Card plus 3%+2% off but they were $100 more than Expedia and the Carnival site and could not figure out why.

I did look at the cabins they reserved for me before I agreed.  The one thing he saw was that we could have adjoining cabins ...the Carnival site did not specify this.  You had to know that it was an option (I didnt know that.)

I used Expedia during their exclusive Princess sale last year and had no issues at all.  I think data entry errors can happen anywhere and yes the TA should have double checked but in the end it is the consumer’s responsibility.  You said you had everything on the computer in front of you before calling - did you not verify the email receipt Expedia would have emailed you?  It would have had the cabin number and cabin type on it.

You’re our first priority. Every time.

We believe everyone should be able to make financial decisions with confidence. And while our site doesn’t feature every company or financial product available on the market, we’re proud that the guidance we offer, the information we provide and the tools we create are objective, independent, straightforward — and free.

So how do we make money? Our partners compensate us. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. The Pros and Cons of Expedia

Sally French

Sally French is a travel rewards expert who joined NerdWallet in 2020. She previously wrote about travel and credit cards for The New York Times and its sibling site, Wirecutter.

Outside of work, she loves fitness, and she competes in both powerlifting and weightlifting (she can deadlift more than triple bodyweight). Naturally, her travels always involve a fitness component, including a week of cycling up the coastline of Vietnam and a camping trip to the Arctic Circle, where she biked over the sea ice. Other adventures have included hiking 25 miles in one day through Italy's Cinque Terre and climbing the 1,260 steps to Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, Thailand.

She lives in San Francisco.

When it comes to Expedia prices

When it comes to expedia travel insurance, when it comes to the expedia cancellation policy, when it comes to the expedia loyalty program, when it comes to maximizing credit card points, the pros and cons of expedia recapped.

Frequent travelers likely know that there’s something better than a dream trip: a dream trip that you booked on a bargain.

The ways to save money on travel are plentiful. You can redeem hotels and airline points, or take advantage of last-minute travel deals, to name a few. And booking through third-party online travel agencies like Expedia can sometimes yield especially big savings.

Beyond just deals, Expedia has robust search filters that make finding your perfect vacation easy. It streamlines purchasing trip insurance , which can be especially important for travel these days. Plus, the Expedia Rewards program earns you points to pay for future bookings.

But booking through an OTA like Expedia is not without its drawbacks. Here's a look at some of those to help you weigh the pros and cons of booking travel through Expedia.

Video preview image

Pro: Expedia has frequent sales, last-minute travel deals and bundle discounts

Expedia deals are aplenty, whether it’s a bundling discount or a sale.

Bundling: A major component of booking travel on Expedia is the practice of bundling, where you can expect additional savings for booking more than one product (e.g., flight and hotel, or hotel and attraction ticket) in one transaction. For example, when we searched for a hotel and rental car in Miami, one five-day booking option included up to three free rental car days while another offered one free night.

A perk of booking travel through Expedia is that you select your hotel, airfare and car rental in separate steps in the process. This makes it easy to bookmark the page and compare the cost of these items on Expedia versus the cost on the company’s direct website.

Expedia payment plans: If you don’t want to pay for your whole trip at the time of booking, Expedia allows you to make smaller payments through Affirm, which is a service that offers short-term loans for online purchases. If approved by Affirm , you’ll be able to pay for your trip in monthly installments.

You can also check Expedia’s Deals page and Expedia’s Last-Minute Deals page . Both tend to offer an eclectic mix of travel deals, ranging from cheap motels in tiny towns to lavish resorts in major tourist destinations. We’ve spotted deals as high as 70% off.

» Learn more: How to find cheaper last-minute flights

Con: Booking direct is sometimes still cheaper than Expedia

Sure, Expedia sales and last-minute deals are nice, but that’s not to say that you can’t find other (sometimes better) deals for booking directly with the travel provider. Many offer their own exclusive deals — and they might save you even more than booking with online travel agencies. Compare prices across both Expedia and the specific company to ensure you’re getting the best price.

And sometimes the savings go beyond just the sticker price. For example, boutique hotel chain Ovolo Hotels offers generous amenities including free laundry, happy hour refreshments and a daily breakfast buffet — but only if you book directly with them.

Pro: You can purchase an Expedia travel insurance policy

Expedia partners with various insurance providers, depending on your individual booking, to offer trip protection.

F or flights: Expedia offers travel insurance protection options that cover flight cancellation, medical emergencies and other covered circumstances.

For hotels: Choose hotel booking protection to reimburse your stay in the case of cancellation.

For car rentals: You can add car rental damage protection for an extra per-day fee.

Coverage varies by plan, but you can typically expect reimbursement for some (or all) trip costs if your trip is impacted by covered reasons. Covered reasons typically include delays, loss, theft or damage to one’s baggage and personal belongings. You’re also typically reimbursed for covered medical expenses, including emergency evacuation if you get sick or injured during your trip.

But there are many limitations and exclusions, so read your policy’s fine print to understand what’s covered.

Expedia 24-hour cancellation

When you book a flight on Expedia, you can cancel for a full refund as long as you do so within 24 hours of booking. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to allow you to cancel a flight for a full refund if canceled within 24 hours of booking and it was booked seven days before departure.

Con: Outside travel insurance might be more comprehensive or cheaper (and sometimes free)

You can opt out of Expedia’s travel insurance and either be completely uninsured — or simply acquire your insurance elsewhere. And there are better travel insurance policies out there.

After a comprehensive review of dozens of plans that assessed factors including price and COVID-19 coverage, here are the best travel insurance policies .

What’s more, you might not even need to pay for travel insurance at all. Many credit cards offer travel insurance benefits if you paid for your trip with that card.

Pro: Expedia offers some fully refundable options

Because airlines, hotels and other travel services set their own individual policies on Expedia, change and cancellation policies can vary significantly. While it can be tricky to parse the policies for each individual property, use Expedia’s “fully refundable” search filter to limit potential bookings to those with flexible policies.

expedia cruise expert

For straightforward requests, use the Expedia service page to make changes and get a refund. If you’re unable to get help through Expedia’s self-service tools, other ways to get in touch with Expedia include live chat, a dedicated Twitter account ( @expediahelp ) and a phone line.

Con: Most cancellation policies are bad, confusing or both

Because airlines are required to give full refunds if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, Expedia lets you change or cancel your flight reservation without fees within the same time period.

For everything else, good luck. Because each travel provider sets its own policies, navigating them can be a headache. In some cases, canceling through Expedia means you’ll have to chase after the hotel or activity provider to recoup the costs.

Additionally, prepare for cancellation fees (both Expedia’s own fees as well as fees from the service provider). That’s if you’re able to cancel at all. Some bookings through Expedia are nonrefundable altogether.

Pro: It’s great for commitment-phobes

The new Expedia Rewards program, One Key Rewards, lets you earn OneKeyCash for every booking you make on the platform (plus on Vrbo and Hotels.com), which can then be used like cash toward future trips. Not only that, but Expedia users can earn status, which includes benefits like exclusive members-only discounts and extra benefits at VIP Access properties (such as free breakfast or late checkout).

For travelers who don’t like to commit to one airline or hotel company, don’t travel that frequently, or who book travel that otherwise doesn’t have its own loyalty program (like a tour or vacation rental), Expedia makes it possible to still get rewarded.

» Learn more: The guide to One Key Rewards

Con: Most hotel and airline loyalty programs are far more rewarding

While the One Key Rewards program is fine, most travel loyalty programs tied to specific hotels or airlines are almost always more rewarding. For individual point values, most other currencies of airline and hotel points are worth far more than OneKeyCash, which nets you 2% back on cruise, hotel, activity and rental car bookings but only .2% on flights. Once it's in your account, you can use it to pay for bookings just like you would cash — though you’ll need enough OneKeyCash in your account to pay for an entire flight, not just part of it.

Additionally, holding specific airline or hotel elite status is typically more lucrative than the value of elite status on One Key Rewards as most perks extend to Expedia VIP Access properties only. That said, some elite members can enjoy up to 20% discounts on hotels and free price drop protection on flights, which is a plus.

As for how to use Expedia points, OneKeyCash can be redeemed on “pay now” bookings for participating purchases priced in U.S. dollars. You can use it to pay for part of a hotel booking, but you’ll have to have enough to pay for the full cost of a flight (including taxes and fees). And while you can’t transfer rewards, you can use your OneKeyCash to book travel for others.

But depending what status you’re able to reach with individual brand loyalty programs, you can likely expect better perks. So if you’re fine committing to one brand, you’re almost always better off striving to earn its status versus with One Key Rewards. But if you only stay for a night here or there or prefer to book based on location or price, it’s a way to earn a few more rewards.

Pro: Expedia counts as a travel purchase

Many travel rewards credit cards give you a higher rewards rate on travel purchases, and booking sites like Expedia typically count as travel spending. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2 points per dollar on travel spending, compared with 1 point per dollar on most purchases.

Con: Travel credit cards are usually better for earning and redeeming rewards

If you’re loyal to a specific hotel or airline brand — or are open to pledging allegiance — credit cards aligned with those brands typically pay more on purchases directly from the brand partner. For example:

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

on American Express' website

Chase United Airlines Mileage Plus Credit Card

on Chase's website

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

• 2 miles per $1 spent on Delta purchases.

Terms apply.

• 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases.

• 12 points per $1 spent on eligible Hilton purchases.

• 6 points per $1 spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

• 1 mile per $1 spent.

• 3 points per $1 spent.

• 2 points per $1 spent.

Even general-purpose travel rewards cards that aren't tied to a specific airline or hotel chain will often reward you more handsomely for booking through their own portals than they would for going through a site like Expedia. Going back to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : As mentioned, it earns 2 points per dollar on most travel purchases — but 5 points per dollar on travel booked through the Chase portal . Among general-purpose travel cards:

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

• 5 miles per $1 on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 on other purchases.

• 5 points per $1 spent on travel booked through Chase.

• 10 points per $1 spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 on air travel booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 spent per year.

• 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 spent.

• 1 point per $1 spent.

If you're considering booking with other online travel agencies like Priceline or Hotels.com, here are the best credit cards for online travel booking websites .

With the right deal, booking travel — including flights, hotels, cruises or car rentals — on Expedia could be worth it. It makes searching for travel relatively easy given the massive array of available listings, coupled with thoughtful search functionality to actually help you create your ideal itinerary.

But don’t automatically assume it’s a cheap way to book travel. Especially given the complicated cancellation policies, it might become among the most expensive, should an uninsured trip need to be canceled.

Health and Safety at All-Inclusive Resorts

Health and safety are at the forefront of everything we do, and there is no compromise in this area for public health. Travelling is no different in that aspect; however, it is a very different world from what we have known before COVID-19. Every step in the travel process has been re-imagined to ensure cleanliness, health and safety to reduce disease transmission. You may be longing for the crystalline blue waters of the ocean and the sounds of soft waves lapping up against the white sand beaches. You welcome the sunny disposition that comes with a tropical climate, and your spirit instantly flourishes. But with so much fear and uncertainty in the air paired with the volume of information involved in planning a trip, the mere idea of travelling creates an overwhelming task. As a result, many travelers may wonder whether the trouble is worth the extra effort for that tropical trip to the beach. We asked this very question to one of our franchisees and passionate travelers: “I’ve stayed at over half a dozen properties in Mexico and the Dominican Republic since the start of Covid, and all of them take sanitization, health and safety very seriously. Many even partner with international health standards companies to develop protocols for cleaning, sanitizing, temperature checks, food safety, etc. Also, many all-inclusive resorts take care of Covid testing requirements before flying back home, making the process easier and removing the more stressful components of travel these days. Lastly, many resorts have made 100% vaccination of their staff and regular staff testing a fundamental pillar of their operating standards, especially in Mexico and the Caribbean.” - Noam Meppen, ACC, Franchise Partner So, with that in mind, here is what you need to know to travel safely with your all-inclusive vacation:

Section 1 Image

The New Flying Process There are new rules in travelling with requirements and restrictions designed to reduce transmission. Requirements will differ between countries. For example, some countries require proof of vaccination, others require a negative entry test, but some countries do not have any requirements. Rest assured that your Vacation Consultant is well-versed in the nuances of travel restrictions and requirements to help you navigate the open waters of travel planning. Because of the nature of close-quarters unavoidable on airplanes, airlines have taken extra steps to ensure air circulation goes through rigorous filtration to minimize the spread and ensure clean air particles disseminate throughout the cabin. Travelers must wear face masks during the duration of the flight. Eating, drinking, and moving around the cabin are not encouraged to minimize unnecessary disruption of air particles.

Private Transfers on the Rise Private and direct transfers from the airport to your resort have gained remarkable interest over the large coach bus transfers usually included in vacation packages. In addition, small group travel with your private party minimizes interactions with others to help reduce risk and increase your level of comfort in health and safety.

Section 3 Image

What’s Happening at the Resort Most resorts have instituted vaccination policies for staff and implemented face masks in all public areas. Upon your arrival, contactless service is encouraged with resort apps where you can check-in to your room, make dining and spa reservations, and access a wealth of information about the property and its services. Enhanced sanitation procedures in public areas ensure frequent cleaning in high contact areas while reducing daily housekeeping to minimize unnecessary traffic in and out of guest rooms. Though the contactless aspects of the resort are present to mitigate risk, the overall customer experience is maintained to enable a positive travel experience.

Need a pre-departure test? Many resorts have also partnered with mobile or onsite labs to offer pre-departure testing for anyone who requires it before leaving. And should you receive a positive test result, dedicated quarantine facilities are available for you to isolate. In addition, many resort chains offer either complimentary or reduced nightly costs for isolation stays should the need arise as a part of their commitment to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Third-Party Excursions As with the private transfers, small group and private tours for your party are preferred for many third-party excursions so that you can still get off the resort to experience the destination itself.

Mask Requirements Masks are required in many places where physical distancing is impossible but not required in many outdoor, open areas. After all, you are on vacation, and who wants to wear a mask at the pool or the beach?

Going away on vacation will not be much different from where you are. Though the rules and enforcement may differ slightly, the universally accepted practices for health and safety to minimize risk is embedded in everything we do, and everywhere we go. Accept that things may change at any time, so be prepared, be aware of the rules and stay flexible. Everyone will have a different comfort level with how they want to proceed with travel plans, and it is vital to recognize that. Your Vacation Consultant will work with you to ensure you book and plan your travel with your comfort level and understand requirements. It may seem like there is a lot more to know these days, but the information is broken into pieces to digest quickly and absorb what is relevant for you. Book with confidence as safety measures throughout the travel process from your departure to your return home

Which AI trip planning tool is the best? Here's how Expedia's and Booking.com's compared.

  • Expedia Group's Romie and Booking.com's AI Trip Planner are AI-powered travel tools that can help travelers plan and manage their trips.
  • Both tools can recommend destinations, places to stay, and things to do and even create a full itinerary for your trip.
  • However, these AI travel planners are still in their early stages and can't yet be relied on completely.

This new travel adviser can help travelers plan and manage their trip – and then come with them on vacation.

Expedia Group revealed a new artificial intelligence assistant last month that users can access anytime via their phones. Named Romie, the alpha version available now via Expedia’s iOS app in the U.S., can help build itineraries, summarize travel plans discussed in group chats, warn customers of trip disruptions and more.

Jeff Miller, Distinguished Product Manager at Expedia Group, said “travel is a complicated business and part of the complexity is about orchestrating and managing all the parts of your trip.” The company previously introduced a travel planning feature powered by ChatGPT last year, but the new assistant marks an expansion of its AI capabilities.

“Romie’s job is to meet you where you are, not wait for you to come,” he said. The feature uses the same OpenAI models that power ChatGPT, but Expedia is “open to using other tech or models” as well.

Romie is the latest AI-powered travel tool , joining other travel platforms utilizing the technology to make a seamless, more customized experience for travelers. In an Oct. 2023 Booking.com survey of more than 27,000 travelers across 33 countries, 56% said they want to use AI to help inform upcoming travels.

Last summer, Booking.com launched its own AI Trip Planner, which also uses ChatGPT to help travelers find accommodations and build out personalized itineraries.

“Imagine having a conversation (with) the AI Trip Planner and being able to render or change what you see (on the Booking.com website) to match the content of your conversation,” Adrienne Enggist, Senior Director of Product at  Booking.com , told USA TODAY. “The hyper-personalization, really, can be supercharged to make your travel planning more productive, much easier.”

USA TODAY’s Nathan Diller and Kathleen Wong tested Romie’s itinerary-building capabilities against Booking.com’s AI Trip Planner to see what it’s like using AI to plan a trip to Rome from Sept. 9-12. Here’s what they found.

What is it like to use Romie?

I started by making a hotel booking on Expedia, which users need to use Romie’s itinerary-building features. iPhone users in the U.S. can opt-in to access the early version of Romie via the EG Labs section of the Expedia app, but the company does not yet have a public launch date.

I reserved a room at Suitedreams – just under $627 for three nights in September – with an “excellent” rating and over 1,000 reviews. Then I phoned a friend (or AI assistant, rather) to help with the rest.

When I clicked through to my itinerary, Romie suggested restaurants near the hotel unprompted, with distances listed. When I clicked on one, it took me to a chat function where I could see various restaurants’ Yelp ratings, hours of operation and other info. I could peruse certain details from there, but other buttons moved me to the Yelp app.

Romie cannot complete restaurant reservations for users, but I was able to add bookings to my itinerary by telling the chatbot when I’d be eating. Miller emphasized that Romie is not “just automatically charging your credit card on your behalf.”

“We don't think that experience is quite ready yet, let’s put it that way,” he said. “But we do think that we can still guide you to be able to take action for yourselves.”

Romie also recommended “some of the best things to do” in Rome, like the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums. The chatbot was also able to suggest bookstores when I asked and give me directions to one I selected. When I requested other activities near my hotel, Romie provided several tours I could book through the Expedia app.

I did run into some hiccups when I clicked on the Colosseum option Romie listed on my itinerary page. The AI program pulled up a “B&B in Rome 2 stops from” the landmark, even though I already had a hotel. When I clicked on the listing, it took me to what looked like an external website that suggested I book it on Airbnb – a competitor to Expedia Group’s Vrbo.

When I asked whether I needed tickets for the Vatican Museums, Romie said yes, sharing a website where I could buy them. But the URL was not hyperlinked and I could not click through, nor could I copy and paste it from my phone, meaning I’d have to manually type it into my browser.

Curious to try another method of communication, I added Romie to my phone contacts to use its text message feature. Romie was similarly able to recommend coffee shops near my hotel that way, but this time, I had to tell the bot where I was staying. Unlike in the app, it did not have my booking information.

I also requested help with booking a rental car. Romie acknowledged my parameters – my travel dates and the budget I shared – and sent me an Expedia link. However, when I clicked on it, I was shown hotel listings.

At one point, I asked for a full itinerary for my three-night trip. Romie asked about my interests – I listed food, historical sites and art – and offered a detailed plan with activity and dining suggestions for the morning, afternoon and evening. I tried that separately with the in-app chat function and was given less of a true itinerary than a list of things to do.

“Launching an early version of Romie in EG Labs provides registered participants with the opportunity to test out products and share their feedback in real-time to help Expedia troubleshoot bugs prior to public launch,” Miller said.

Romie’s other features fell outside the purview of my hypothetical trip, but Miller said the tool will get to know users’ preferences over time, with “progressive intelligence” being a key principle.

“An assistant that forgets what you told it isn't very useful, especially in a complex process like travel planning that we all know takes weeks or sometimes months,” he said. “So, that notion that Romie’s learning as it goes and remembering is very important to what we think an assistant needs to do.”

Based on my test run with the current version of Romie, I’d recommend it to travelers as a starting point for generating ideas and tracking itinerary items of interest. However, given the apparent glitches in the user experience, I wouldn’t rely solely on the tool.

How to use AI to plan a vacation: And what you should know first

What’s it like to use Booking.com’s AI Trip Planner?

Booking.com’s AI Trip Planner is only accessible via the Booking.com mobile app in English-speaking markets, including the U.S., U.K., Australia and New Zealand. Once I created an account, a pop-up screen prompted me to “start chatting” with the AI Trip Planner. The AI tool greeted me and asked how it could help my trip planning – it also warned me that it’s “still learning.”

According to Enggist, the AI language model is still in its “early discovery, early planning space.” It acts like a well-traveled friend who can provide guidance based on your answers, interests and tastes. The tool can recommend destinations, places to stay, and things to do and even create a full itinerary for your trip.

“It’s less about generating search results and more about curating lists of things that are potentially ideal for you,” she said.

In the future, Booking.com hopes to “extend the helper all the way through the journey,” like updating your ground transportation if your flight is delayed, Enggist said.

I asked the AI Trip Planner to find me a hotel room in Rome for three nights in September, and it asked for specifics, like a preferred location or type of hotel. I said it would be my first time, and I didn’t know where to start. The tool responded with three hotel options, all of which are based in Rome’s city center, highly rated and cost between $264 and $602 for the stay.

While I could learn more about the hotels and read their reviews on the app, I couldn’t book directly through the AI Trip Planner. For that, I’d have to go to the hotel’s page on the app or website. I also couldn’t book a rental car through the AI Trip Planner.

I then asked the AI Trip Planner to come up with things for me to do during my trip, and it gave me eight “popular attractions and activities,” such as visiting the Colosseum and the Pantheon – typical Rome must-dos. I asked if the tool could help me get tickets to the Colosseum, and it told me that I had to visit the website for the Colosseum or a third-party vendor like Viator to do so.

“The AI Trip Planner makes recommendations that are more niche or more hidden gems,” Enggist said. However, I found that even when I gave more specifics about what to do – like if I were a foodie – the first results were still the most popular or famous choices, which also means crowds and often overly touristy places.

When I asked for vegan restaurant recommendations, it gave me five. Although there were no links for me to learn more or how to contact the restaurants, I was able to ask for more detailed descriptions, like what I could expect from their menu and the atmosphere.

I asked the AI Trip Planner to help me get from one of the recommended hotels to one of the suggested vegan restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised at how detailed the results were: I was told the stations and lines if I wanted to use the metro, or take a 20-minute walk “through some of Rome’s most beautiful neighborhoods.”

Finally, I asked the AI Trip Planner to give me a three-day itinerary in Rome if I love food and am vegan. It broke down each day into the morning, lunch, afternoon and dinner, including what to do and where to eat each meal. The itinerary is a good starting point for travelers, but since it told me to visit the Colosseum and Roman Forum in the afternoon – which is peak visiting time – I’m not sure it accounts for crowds or long lines.

While I wouldn’t depend on the AI Trip Planner for my complete trip itinerary, I would certainly turn to it for help finding accommodations and initial ideas in the beginning stages of my trip planning.

If I were hoping to go on a beach vacation and had a budget in mind but no destination, this is where chatting with the AI Trip Planner would come in handy. I also liked how it helped narrow down my hotel options based on location and price, which is sometimes a challenging yet essential part of planning a vacation. Based on the vagueness of the AI Trip Planner when asked about day-to-day activities, I likely wouldn’t use the tool for restaurant recommendations or things to do since you need to leave the platform to book or get further details anyway.

These AI travel planners are designed to personalize and simplify the travel planning process. Although they aren't yet at the stage where you can rely on them completely, only time will tell.

– Kathleen Wong

Could an all-inclusive cost the same as rent? He tried it.

Ben Keenan went viral on TikTok for testing his theory that a month in Mexico would cost the same as his Seattle rent.

expedia cruise expert

All Ben Keenan wanted was a bowl of cereal for breakfast.

Normally, that would entail a stroll from his bed to the kitchen. But it wasn’t so simple in his temporary Mexico residence: For a month, he had to walk outside in the 95-degree heat, find a host to get seated and place an order with a waiter. It sounds like a major first-world problem, but Keenan said he missed a sense of “autonomy.”

At the time, Keenan was trying out a new lifestyle — living out of an all-inclusive luxury resort on the Yucatán Peninsula for 27 days. However, this wasn’t exactly a gluttonous getaway. The 31-year-old Seattle resident spent most of May at the Ocean Riviera Paradise Hotel to conduct a (sponsored) experiment he floated on social media.

@ivebentraveling Honestly, kind of a joke but kind of serious - I might just find myself on a beach somewhere sucking down cocktails and WHAT OF IT 😩 #allinclusive #allinclusiveresort #resortlife #livehack #mexico #dominicanrepublic #travel #travellife #travelmeme ♬ Funny video "Carmen Prelude" Arranging weakness(836530) - yo suzuki(akisai)

This year, Keenan made a TikTok that asked the viral question: Could living in a tropical resort outside the United States be cheaper than living at home? In the video, which has been viewed by more than 7 million people, the full-time public relations consultant breaks down his expenses — approximately $4,100 monthly between rent, utilities, food and other spending categories.

Expedia contacted him with an offer to cover the cost of accommodations abroad, so Keenan had nothing to lose. He decided to fly to Mexico to put his theory to the test.

“We discovered Ben while scrolling on TikTok, and we couldn’t help but take him up on his challenge,” an Expedia spokesperson said.

To Keenan, it wasn’t just about the sheer dollar amount saved. Living at an all-inclusive also didn’t come with the baggage of day-to-day responsibilities. Therefore, he could just, in his words, “exist.” Fast forward a few months later, and his simulation became a daily vlog-style documentary on social media.

A video that started as a ‘joke’

In February, Keenan was sipping beers with friends at a brewery while discussing the city’s high cost of living.

While Keenan was paying $2,300 per month for a downtown apartment — not too far off from the current U.S. median rent of $2,128 — two of his companions had been renting for much less than that.

“My friends had lived in an apartment for six or seven years and somehow hadn’t seen a single rent increase,” he said. However, that was finally set to change. While on the hunt for a new home, Keenan’s friends were shocked at how expensive things had become.

The group then threw out a wild idea: Would it be cheaper to live in a hotel?

“We took it one step further and said, ‘What about an all-inclusive resort where food was included, alcohol was bottomless, and there’s a pool and a beach?’” he recalled.

The Pacific Northwest’s dreary winter weather drew Keenan to research lodging options in Mexico, mostly as a “joke.” However, what piqued his curiosity the most was having a higher quality of life.

“Having somebody clean my room, cook for me, and just have everything taken care of at a resort was really the enticing part,” he said. “I live within my means at home, but there are certain luxuries I wish I had.”

@ivebentraveling Replying to @Mia D Day 9 of living at an all-inclusive resort #travel ♬ original sound - Ben Keenan

From a thought experiment to a real-life one

Keenan wasn’t planning on making his thought experiment a reality. All-inclusive resorts are far from his preferred type of travel style.

“I typically stay at boutique hotels that are centrally located in a city where I can walk around,” he noted. It was only after Expedia offered to cover the cost of a month-long all-inclusive stay did he consider it.

In late April, the Seattleite packed his bags, made a social media announcement and set off for a 27-day solo excursion. Soon after, his daily check-in videos acquired a cultlike following.

In each documentary-style clip, Keenan takes us along for a voyeuristic day-in-the-life. As viewers, we quickly learn the resort food is excellent, the drinks are strong, and Keenan’s fair complexion does not do well in the sun.

There are detailed, and sometimes humorous, accounts of how he combats boredom (by creating his own events calendar), explores outside the resort (by taking a day trip to the city of Playa del Carmen) and alters his morning ritual (by simply wandering to a cafe with iced coffee instead of hot).

Keenan also follows a normal Monday-to-Friday routine for the sake of the experiment. That includes working remotely during the week, eating comparable foods to what he would have at home and (attempting to) keep up with his regular gym habits.

@ivebentraveling Replying to @Aerin555 Am I lonely or bored living at an all-inclusive resort #travel ♬ original sound - Ben Keenan

A sense of community has no price tag

As a self-proclaimed extrovert, Keenan said he isn’t afraid to talk to strangers and strike up conversations when he’s alone.

However, at the resort, he found it challenging to have any meaningful exchanges beyond the basic pleasantries. That’s because almost all the other visitors were traveling in pairs or groups. “Plus, when other travelers find out I’m here for a month by myself, they’re utterly confused,” he noted.

Keenan felt isolated at times, missing the vibrant community he had in Seattle.

“I think the value of having a community is something you just can't put a price tag on,” he said. “If I were to move somewhere, I'd have to be in a place that allows me to build one and I can’t here.”

Instead, he bonded with the resort’s employees by getting to know them on a personal level. These are the people Keenan regularly saw, and at this point, they knew him as “that guy” who’s staying for a month. “I honestly would come back to this resort just to see the staff again and reconnect,” he said.

On the flip side, Keenan had a hard time getting used to the sometimes-obsequious level of service. He even had a personal butler, ready to be at his beck and call. He was “getting multiple knocks on my door a day,” he says, pausing to let workers refill his mini fridge or complete turndown service. He was surprised at how tiring and, frankly, annoying it became.

“Obviously, I’m not being kept here, but I’m a very independent person and I didn’t expect to feel as though you lose a bit of control,” he said.

@ivebentraveling Replying to @leatakacs16 Is it cheaper to live at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico than it is to live back home in the US? #travel ♬ original sound - Ben Keenan

The results

While the luxury resort that Keenan selected was $4,900 for the 27-day stay, significantly more than the $4,100 that he spends on an average month in Seattle, there are so many variables to consider.

Keenan said he selected a high-end Mexican resort with numerous amenities and one that was oceanfront. There were many more affordable hotels that he could’ve picked from. And then there are the luxuries that don’t have a certain “value.”

“There are things that I call ‘bonuses’; offerings like entertainment, pools, housekeeping, and room service aren’t available to me at home,” he adds. “Those line items are highly subjective from person to person.” So while he “spent” (remember Expedia covered the cost) $800 more than what he would have at home, there were intangibles to consider.

Overall, Keenan has no regrets about resort life for a month, but he concedes that this type of arrangement — especially by himself — isn’t exactly a dream scenario. “Everyone I’ve talked to at home has said, ‘If I lived this life, I wouldn’t get bored and I would be happy’ but I don’t think this lifestyle is for most people.”

To do this again, Keenan said he would need to be closer to a big city and in a place where he could find other like-minded travelers. Long-term travel is a viable option as an alternative lifestyle, but it’s about the right conditions. “It’s a different style of life, living solo in a place where there are no other solo people around,” he said.

Keenan would consider paying for a similar arrangement with his own money. But next time, he would pick a destination that’s not so hot. “I’ve never sweated so much in my life,” he said.

Tips for longer-term stays

Travelers who are looking to save on longer-term stays of several weeks or more — all-inclusive or not — have a few options.

Consider accommodations with an extended-stay hotel brand from major U.S. chains like Hyatt House (Hyatt), Residence Inn (Marriott) or Homewood Suites (Hilton). These hotels offer the niceties of apartment-style living, typically with kitchens or kitchenettes, separate living and sleeping spaces, and complimentary daily breakfast. By booking directly with the hotel, you can also earn valuable loyalty points (which can add up on lengthy stays).

Reach out directly to the hotel’s sales manager for trips that are a month, says Stella Shon, a consumer travel expert for Upgraded Points . “At some hotels, it’s possible to negotiate a rate if a stay is a few consecutive weeks or more,” she says.

Airbnb and Vrbo remain reliable options, too, with many owners offering deep discounts for customers who book long-term. Vrbo says travelers can save an average of 10 percent when booking private vacation rentals by using the “monthly discount” or “weekly discount” search filters.
