England cricket team in Pakistan for first tour since 2005

England were due to visit last year, but cancelled at short notice after New Zealand pulled out of a tour citing safety concerns.

England's Twenty20 cricket team captain Jos Buttler speaks during a press conference in Karachi

England’s cricket team has arrived in Karachi for their first tour of Pakistan in 17 years, a lengthy absence brought about by security fears.

England last played in Pakistan in 2005 and were due to visit last year, but cancelled at short notice after New Zealand pulled out of a tour citing safety concerns.

Asia cup cricket: rizwan, nawaz take pakistan home against india, english cricket racism row grows as hales blackface photos emerge, tariq saeed, the man reviving urdu cricket commentary in pakistan, does english cricket have a racism problem.

The move infuriated the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), who called it “disrespectful” and had been desperate to show the country was safe again following a deadly attack on the Sri Lanka team in 2009.

The 19-man visiting team, captained by Jos Buttler, will play seven Twenty20 games against Pakistan in Karachi and Lahore from September 20 to October 2 as both teams tune up for next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

“We are excited to be here. It’s my first experience of Pakistan,” Buttler said. “Some of the players who featured in the Pakistan Super League have shared positive things about Pakistan and how much the public like the game.”

Pakistan’s former cricketer Sadiq Muhammed hailed the English team’s tour. “It looks like a good omen for future tours by other teams,” he told Al Jazeera on the telephone from Karachi.

Security concerns

Following the attack by armed men on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore, Pakistan were forced to play international matches at neutral venues such as the United Arab Emirates, where they hosted England in 2012 and 2015.

Earlier this year, Australia toured successfully for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century. The PCB said the Australia series “demonstrated our event-planning and operational skills” and expressed confidence that the England games will also pass off safely.

On match days, roads between the England team hotel and Karachi’s National Stadium will be sealed off and will remain under armed guard. A helicopter will monitor their journey and shops and offices overlooking the stadium will be ordered to shut.

The last time England toured Pakistan, Islamabad was fighting armed rebels in several areas of the country. The security situation has vastly improved since, but there has been an uptick in attacks since the Taliban stormed back to power in neighbouring Afghanistan.

In March, an ISIL (ISIS) suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing 64 in the deadliest armed attack since 2018.

Most of the incidents of violence are confined to the porous border regions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Karachi and Lahore were however targeted recently by Baloch separatists. In April, four people, including three Chinese nationals, were killed in Karachi.

The tour comes as Pakistan also grapples with catastrophic flooding that has left nearly a third of the country under water and affected at least 33 million people.

“I am super excited and look forward to watching England and Buttler in Pakistan,” said Masum Rizvi, an electrician in Karachi.

Last month, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said the team was “desperate” to play in Pakistan despite the humanitarian disaster.

“I think hopefully us going out there and playing will be a positive for what’s been a pretty harrowing time for the people of that country,” said Rob Key, managing director of men’s cricket.

England will return in December to play three five-day Test matches.

England cricket tour of Pakistan 'enormous moment' that will help bring nations closer together, says diplomat

England will play two Twenty20 internationals when they visit Pakistan next October, their first matches there since 2005.

England will play the Pakistan limited-overs side (pictured) in two Twenty20 matches next year

A British diplomat who has helped complete negotiations for the England cricket team to tour Pakistan for the first time in 16 years has said "perceptions of Pakistan need to catch up with the reality".

The England Cricket Board announced on Wednesday they will tour in October 2021 to play two Twenty20 internationals, their first matches in Pakistan since 2005.

Pakistan did not host any international cricket for a decade after terrorists attacked the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009.

Christian Turner is the British High Commissioner based in Islamabad

But over the last five years much has changed and Pakistan has seen an 80% decrease in security incidents, said Christian Turner, the British High Commissioner based in Islamabad.

Now the England Cricket Board has agreed to a trip which will be equally important off the field as on it, according to the diplomat, who played a key role in the negotiations to make the tour happen.

Mr Turner told Sky News it's "an enormous moment" which will "bring the two countries closer together", saying it was his personal ambition to make it happen.

He said: "When I arrived a year ago, I reviewed our travel advice to Pakistan, the security issues here, made recommendations to the foreign secretary and that led us to be able to say that it's good for people to travel here. I felt it was safe to recommend that.

"This tour is massive news. With everything that's gone on with the security issues that led teams to stop touring, to everything the Pakistan game has been doing to rebuild.

"It's brilliant to have two of the greatest teams in the sport coming together on Pakistani soil."

England last played a test series in Pakistan in 2005

Mr Turner also feels this cricket tour will be a good way to strengthen political ties between England and Pakistan.

"Diplomats like me care about sport because it transcends boundaries. You get in any discussion anywhere in Pakistan and one of the first things you talk about is cricket. I do think it will serve to bring the populations together.

"I'm a guardian of this relationship between England and Pakistan, that has long history and some of that history is complex but this cricket tour will play a huge role in that.

"It could be a powerful moment and is such a valuable thing for this relationship."

As to the wider issue of security and the terror threat that has faced Pakistan for many years, Mr Turner insisted he is not being a cheerleader for Islamabad.

He said: "A lot of what I find myself saying is the perceptions of Pakistan need to catch up with the reality and a lot has changed over the last five years.

"I think Pakistan deserves credit for that. It's been achieved by a lot of hard investment and sacrifice through the loss of life."

He added: "We want to spare no efforts to make sure all the best security arrangements are in place for when England tour Pakistan, but frankly, the hard truth is bad things can happen all over the world.

"We've seen in the UK and in other places, terrible events happen despite the best efforts of our own apparatus and I just think we have to approach this with a sense of positivity."

Tensions persist between Pakistan and its neighbour, India, their longstanding feud having escalated a number of times over the last decade.

The two countries have not played each other in a cricket match outside of a major tournament since 2018, and that in Dubai, where Pakistan have been playing since 2009.

Mr Turner believes the England tour to Pakistan can help heal divisions.

He said: "The India-Pakistan relationship is hugely complex, those teams playing is something we'd all like to see and would be the ultimate prize.

"But it's clear a lot would need to happen between now and then to make that work."

Schedule, venues confirmed for England WTC25 tour of New Zealand

New Zealand Cricket have announced dates and locations for the England Test series, beginning in late November.

Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the Basin Reserve in Wellington, and Seddon Park in Hamilton will host New Zealand's three Tests, all part of the ongoing 2023-2025 World Test Championship.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink says the early announcement of England's Test tour comes after a surge in popularity in the long format, where seven of the eight days of the two Tests against Australia earlier this year were sold out.

“In the past, there’s often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers,” he said.

“The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming Tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers.

“We’re looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well.”

New Zealand become WTC21 Champions – Day 6 Highlights

Winners of the first World Test Championship cycle in 2021, New Zealand sit in third on the 2023-2025 table, having collected 50% of possible points in their campaign thus far. The Black Caps claimed maximum points in their home series against South Africa and collected a win in their away two-match series with Bangladesh, before falling to a 2-0 series defeat to current defending World Test Champions Australia.

World Test Championship standings

Both Australia and Sri Lanka women’s teams, alongside the Sri Lanka and Pakistan men’s teams, will also be touring in the 2024/2025 summer.

The remainder of New Zealand's home international schedule will be announced later in the year.
