3 Day Loch Ness & Skye Tour

3 Day Loch Ness & Skye

The tour was better than I expected! I usually prefer solo travel for the freedom it offers, but this time, I felt I got more from the tour than if I had gone solo. Tim is an amazing storyteller. If he made a podcast about Scotland, I'd totally listen. I learned a lot, the plan was flexible, and Tim really listened to what we wanted. The hostels were in cool places and were super comfy. The whole tour felt friendly and chill, especially that night by the fire with the guitar. Thanks!

Loch Ness, Inverness & The Highlands - from Edinburgh

We spent 2 nice days around the Highlands in company of Martin who told us a lot of intresting facts about everything that came him in mind and accompanied the tour with lovely scottish music and ballads related to what he was telling us. A very nice experience , the only thing that i wish it could have been different was that in every spot we stopped we could have take a guided walk instead of walking around on our own and hearing stories from the place we visited just in the bus. And also our group wasn't very friendly but actually full of very shy people,so we didn't have the feeling of travelling in a group at all. That's why the 4 stars. The rest of it was lovely.

Scotland Tour

It was a good trip seeing a lot of Scotland and the tour guide was very good. However a few things to improve are: There were too many people in the group so didn't really interact with the rest of them and the language difference didn't help either as I didn't realise that most of them spoke Spanish so the guide had to say everything in 2 languages. There was confusion on the trip as in the main Itinerary, it only mentioned breakfast included but when you looked into individual days it said dinner included, so didn't match. I feel that at least 1 dinner would have been nice to help with interacting with the group. I was a bit disappointed that the distillery changed days instead of the 1st day as I would have liked a bit more time to see Edinburgh especially as it was nice that day. Also the day in Edinburgh shouldn't be on a Saturday as it was too busy. A few places I felt rushed like Fort William as we only had time to get out, see it a bit, have a hot drink and toilet and then go but to be honest there wasn't much there so could have gone anywhere really. It was nice to see the castles except it would have good if Edinburgh castle had been included, but also maybe see something else for a variety like a mine or cave, or we did pass a cable car and that would have been nice. But overall it was a nice trip seeing places around Scotland in the time.

Highlights of Scotland Tour

Highlights of Scotland

This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

3-Day Speyside Whisky Trail Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Tour

3-Day Speyside Whisky Trail Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh

Dan our guide was very friendly and answer all of our questions. Good knowledge of Scottish history (never heard of the word Jacobites before the tour)

2-Day Loch Ness, Inverness & the Highlands Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Tour

2-Day Loch Ness, Inverness & the Highlands Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh

We enjoyed the two day historic tour from Edinburgh to Inverness (overnight) to Ft William and back. Al was a fantastic guide - full of great information, humor and care for all of us. The Heather Isle B&B was fantastic - clean and roomy with a hearty breakfast. I felt I walked away with a greater love for Scotland, its heritage and history. The images of the landscapes of the highlands will forever be capture in my heart.

Jacobite Steam Train & The Great Glen

Our tour guide driver John was excellent. The sites were excellent, the only issue was finding somewhere to eat in St Augustus after 9pm. Unfortunately one of the large restaurants was closed for the night we arrived

Eilean Donan, Loch Ness & The North West Highlands - Departing Edinburgh Tour

Eilean Donan, Loch Ness & The North West Highlands - Departing Edinburgh

My guide was Eddie and I'm just going to say one thing, Eddie needs a promotion and needs to be featured on the booklet. He did an outstanding job over the two days of the tour. He had the right balance of information/education/humour/conversation also he had the right balance between giving you your own space to enjoy the scenery and engage with you in a conversation. I found him very polite and pleasant to be around. Also Eddie put on a selection of Scottish music that went well with the locations we were in. It absolutely set the atmosphere and made the experience slightly enhanced. I think he had an answer to every question which was thrown at him. It was great that he was Scottish... otherwise it would not have been quite the same experience. The tour was great, well organised, efficiently run. The only downside is that I bought my tour from a souvenir shop on royal mile and the service was so atrocious that I have almost walked out without booking anything. Because of that for that I was expecting the tour to be exactly the same. However, was pleased to have been completely wrong. Please note that the shop did you no justice, had no knowledge, could not answer questions and almost cost you a customer.

4 Day Islay Whisky Tour Tour

4 Day Islay Whisky Tour

This is part of the email I sent to Scottish Routes: "The itinerary was excellent – very well planned; the accommodation on Islay was most pleasant, hosts Andrew and Alison vey hospitable; we were fortunate to travel with a very interesting and varied group of people and the transport provided was very comfortable. Unfortunately we had the tour guide from hell - Moray. Moray was extremely rude, crude, unapproachable, obnoxious, ignorant and insensitive. He drove at excessive and dangerous speeds along the narrow roads, becoming extremely impatient with other drivers, cursing them in no uncertain terms and constantly tailgating. Not even the rain slowed him down. If a passenger asked a question that he had already answered he would call them stupid and tell them that they should have listened the first time. He had zero tolerance for anyone who was not back on board at the designated time and let them know he was annoyed. A further example of his poor behaviour is when a passenger asked the source of electricity on Islay. He was driving and initially seemed to ignore the question (this was not unusual) and then threw his hands up in the air and said that it fell out of the sky. There were many more examples of his unprofessional behaviour but I am sure you get the picture."

Skye High Tour

We had a fantastic three-day tour of the Highlands and Skye. Our guide, Dusty, was great. He organised everything perfectly and his commentary throughout the tour was lively and informative. He really took care of us! The tour itself is an excellent way to get a taste for the Scottish Highlands without having to hire a car or deal with the pot-holed backroads of Skye! The scenery was just magnificent and the stops both going up to the Isle of Skye and on the return were well worth it. We visited Loch Ness on the way up and Glencoe on the way back. The hostel accommodation was cheap and cheerful, but did the trick, and the independent hostel is right in the middle of Portree on Skye, so it's really convenient. And it has a huge kitchen so you can self-cater. A fabulous tour. Highly recommend!

Bonnie Scotland Tour

Bonnie Scotland

We really enjoyed the tour. I would have liked to have had more time at Dunnotar Castle, Inverness and in St Andrews. Those visits were too rushed.

What people love about Edinburgh Tours

This tour was absolutely SENSATIONAL! It was so surreal to be in filming locations but also so unexpectedly pleasant to stop off at a number of other destinations as well in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Our guide was so friendly and clearly brought his all to the trip. Can't recommend this trip enough.
I had a great trip with MacBackpackers! Tim was a fabulous guide and full of information about Scottish history. Would recommend if you are coming to explore Scotland.
??This tour with our guide, Branka, was absolutely amazing! She told us all stories about Scotland, from myths to legends, and it was really captivating. And you know what? Branka has a kind of magic: if you imagine your dreams in your head, she makes them come true! We manifested the good weather, and we had it throughout the trip. And it's crazy, but Branka knows Steve the hunter from Loch Ness! Our encounter with him was truly incredible! We really got into the game and spent three days of pure happiness and joy. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to discover Scotland in an authentic and magical way! And the landscapes are really worth it: just an hour after Edinburgh, you can't stop taking out your camera and photographing everything your eyes admire.

14) Visit The Royal Botanic Garden

top things to do in edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden is an essential place to visit in Edinburgh, because it dates back to 17 th century. This attraction is both a tourist and local favourite. Carrying the beauties of the city, the Royal Botanic Garden is also a world-renowned scientific centre for plants.

You can expect many interesting and beautiful things to see at the Botanic garden. For instance, you can walk through the Arboretum which is filled with lush trees, the Chinese Hillside which is made up of rare and colourful plants, explore tropical plants, and more.

The Garden is open daily and the entry is free. There are two entrances to get here which are: the West Gate (EH3 5NZ) and East Gate (EH3 5LP). Buses are available for both gate entrances and you can also find bicycles at each gate to use. However, if you will come by car, you can only access the Garden’s West Gate.

Address: Arboretum PI, Edinburgh

13) Eat At The Kitchin

edinburgh tour 2023

One of the most interesting things about Edinburgh and Scotland is the multicultural environment. This multiculturalism is also reflected with the many tasty culinary options in Edinburgh. For instance, the Kitchin intertwines French methods to Scottish food which transcends your taste buds to a new level.

However, the Kitchin is great for many other reasons. The Kitchin has held Michelin status since 2006 alongside with many other prestigious awards. This top restaurant is also special for its motto of “from nature to plate” which shows its freshness and daily selections.

If you visit the Kitchin you must try Wagyu which is formed of Highland Wagyu beef, truffle, and egg. This culinary experience goes well with wine and there are selections of must try wine pairings.

Address: 78, Commercial Quay, Leith, Edinburgh

12) Get a Room with an Historical Essence: 23 Mayfield Hotel

edinburgh tour 2023

If you seek a hotel with an historical ambience and a comfy and relaxing atmosphere, 23 Mayfield is for you. This hotel is highly recommended as the best place to stay, because it embraces Edinburgh’s history with its Victorian style.

Built in 1868, 23 Mayfield has the perfect central location if you want to stay in the City Centre. It’s really close to Castle and Princes Street.

Scottish hospitality is very famous and is indeed present at 23 Mayfield with its family-run concept. You’ll love the hand-carved mahogany furniture in each room too. For overseas visitors, remember that a twin room means two single beds and a double means one double bed to share!

Additionally, the breakfast here is award-winning and has many selections from champagne breakfast to steam porridge and more. But, you must try the “Eggcup Award Winning” for a scrumptious traditional Scottish breakfast.

Location, photo, and booking

11) Take a Creepy Tour of The Real Mary King’s Close

edinburgh tour 2023

Edinburgh is famous for its underground tours with fascinating and entertaining experiences. The Real Mary King’s Close is a top place to visit in Edinburgh as an underground tour located under the buildings of the Royal Mile. The Real Mary King’s Close is the best tour of all our underground tours.

If you love a haunted and paranormal experience this attraction will knock your socks off! You can follow in the footsteps of former residents which make this experience ever so exciting.

For a historical and fun time, you can choose to tour with costumed guides. Some costumed guides are: the Plague Doctor, the Poet, and the Maid. After this fun and creepy tour, head to the gift shop and coffee shop that has locally sourced options to try.

Address: Warriston’s Close, 2, High St, Edinburgh

Visiting Edinburgh soon? We’ve put together a list of where to stay in Edinburgh plus the best Harry Potter stops in Edinburgh!

10) stay in the hotel where harry potter came to life.

edinburgh tour 2023

Certainly, Edinburgh is famous for the Harry Potter experience and a closer look into the world of J.K. Rowling. There are many attractions that encapsulate this experience in Scotland; however, the Balmoral Hotel is one of the most unique.

Why? Well, the infamous J.K. Rowling completed the Harry Potter series here, and there is a J.K. Rowling suite available for Harry Potter fans to stay in.

However, there are other reasons you should stay here too. For instance, the Balmoral Hotel is a five-star hotel and has a Michelin-starred restaurant. Also, many of the rooms in this hotel have the view of the Castle and Old Town. Don’t miss out on this luxurious and charming stay.

9) Explore the Wonders of Calton Hill

edinburgh tour 2023

Scotland and Edinburgh is formed of marvellous hills and Calton Hill is one of them. In fact, the whole of Calton Hill is composed of major landmarks, commercial areas, and peaceful streets. For instance, there is the National Monument, the Collective Gallery, and more great spots. You can also walk through Calton Hill to have a free, fun, and healthy activity while viewing its marvellous wonders.

Most importantly, Carton Hill has panoramic views that are majestic and are great to take photos for Instagram memories at sunset. It’s no wonder that Carton Hill is labelled as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because of all the distinct areas and vistas it has.

Also, when at Calton Hill you can experience the Athenian acropolis architecture (the National Monument) while climbing the hill. You’ll wonder if you stepped into Greece! If you’re here in August don’t miss out the Edinburgh festival shows. Some of these festivals are about art, films, and books, which will appeal to many travellers.

Address: Edinburgh EH7 5AA, Edinburgh

8) Walk through Princes Street

things to see and do in edinburgh

Do you love shopping or walking through a luscious green garden? Then, certainly a walk through Princes Street is the perfect thing to do for you. This street is formed of many shops, hotels (for example: The Balmoral Hotel), transportation, green parks, and more.

Princes Street is most importantly an icon of Edinburgh where many films have used this street for iconic Edinburgh scene. This street is indeed busy due to its fame and beauty.

Here are a few must-see attractions on Princes Street: Princes Street Garden filled with a lush green atmosphere and the Scottish National Gallery with amazing art selections. For some essential things to do here: shop at the National Scottish shops filled with whiskey options and cute souvenirs, then eat at any local café.

Also, don’t miss out on the seasonal markets present at Princes Street Garden such as Edinburgh’s Farmers Market.

Address: Princes St, EH2 2AN, Edinburgh

7) Indulge in The Scotch Whiskey Experience

top things to do in edinburgh

What is the national drink of Scotland you might ask? As a matter of fact, the preferred drink of Edinburgh and Scotland as a whole is whiskey. So why not experience this marvellous drink in the lands from which it was created!

The Scotch Whiskey Experience is a perfect way to tour, explore, taste, and learn about the wonders of whiskey. You can also be a part of the whiskey-making process and gulp on some delicious Scotch whiskies on the way.

Additionally, the Scotch Whiskey Experience provides a variety of tours, from Tasting Tales to The Taste of Scotland and more. The Scotch Whiskey Experience also is home to the World’s Largest Collection of Scotch Whiskey, so there is an option for everyone who loves to booze their way through a city.

Address: The Royal Mile, 354 Castlehill, Edinburgh

6) Teatime at The Signet Library

top things to do in edinburgh

How about an afternoon of tea and other brilliant drinks and desserts in a unique setting with Georgian architecture? If that sounds fun, then head to the Signet Library to feel posh, luxurious, and pampered. The Signet Library has a deep historical essence stemming from Edinburgh’s Golden Age. This iconic place has been home for ideas and knowledge to prosper.

Afternoon tea is a staple in Scotland, especially Edinburgh. As such, you must try afternoon tea at the Signet Library, because the tea is refreshing, lovely, and served with champagne.

The Signet Library is for everyone, but it has a secret: the TV show Outlanders featured the tea here. You don’t have to be an Outlanders fan to taste this sensation. It’s definitely worth it for anyone!

Address: The Signet Library, Parliament Square, Edinburgh

5) Visit The Forth Bridge

edinburgh tour 2023

Located in Queensferry (North and South), Edinburgh, and dating back to 1890, this bridge is beautiful at any time of the day. Similar to Calton Hill, the Forth Bridge is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a strong historical background. Additionally, the Forth Bridge is both a local and tourist symbol and is featured on the Banknotes of Scotland.

What makes the Forth Bridge historical and important is because of its length. It had the world’s longest bridge span of 541 meters (1,774 feet) when it opened in1890. Also, this bridge was the world’s first major steel structure with intertwined cantilever designs.

Additionally, this bridge is fun to enjoy with local shops and cafes surrounding the bridge when you’re ready for a quick bite or a cup of tea. Don’t forget to take a photo and sit on the benches near the bridge where you can enjoy fresh sea air and a great view of sunrise or sunset.

Address: Forth Bridge, South Queensferry, Edinburgh

4) Taste True Scottish Cuisine

edinburgh tour 2023

The Witchery is one of the top places to eat in Edinburgh, especially for a luxurious experience or fancy date night. The cuisine is delicious Scottish-based food from Scottish lobster to beef or lamb to haggis. However, you must try the pudding menu too. From cheese selections to ice cream, all of the choices are delicious here.

The Witchery by the Castle has a deep historical background too. In fact, the Witchery gets its name from the hundreds of people burned to death due to the belief that they were witches. This fine dining restaurant is available everyday where you can eat its award-winning a la carte menu with a warm, rich Scottish ambiance.

If you want to experience the full on Scottish foods in a single, tasty, filling bite either try: the Lamb Wellington or the Witchery Haggis. These foods will make you feel the Scottish culture and delicious fresh meat options found in Edinburgh and beyond the city boundaries.

Address: 352 Castlehill, Edinburgh

3) Climb an Extinct Volcano: Arthur’s Seat

top things to do in edinburgh

Legend has it that Arthur’s Seat is named after King Arthur, and it might be one of the locations for Camelot in Edinburgh. When climbing and walking through this hill you can feel the mysterious atmosphere present here.

Arthur’s Seat is Edinburgh’s highest hill – an extinct volcano – and is part of Holyrood Park. This exceptional attraction is located in the heart of the city and is just a short walk from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Arthur’s Seat is also free, but I highly recommend a tour because the history of this place is both immersive and intriguing.

In short, you must climb Arthur’s Seat for many reasons. However, one core reason is to see a 360-degree view of Edinburgh. If you plan to climb or walk here, don’t forget to wear your comfy walking shoes!

Address: Edinburgh EH16 5HX, Edinburgh

2) Visit Historic Edinburgh Castle

top things to do in edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle is both a local and tourist attraction for many people and ties together the long history of Edinburgh and England. In fact, this castle is one of the oldest places still standing in the British Isles – initially built in the 11th century and added upon later. The castle was originally a royal residence, military garrison, prison, and strategic fortress and is still considered the most besieged fortress in Britain.

What also makes this castle a fantastic attraction is that it symbolises not only Edinburgh, but also Scotland with its legendary past by displaying its national identity, Scottish history, and power. It is no wonder that the Edinburgh Castle is the most visited place in Edinburgh, because it ties the symbolism, heritage, and the wonders of Edinburgh together.

If you are here during August, you must see the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is made up of a series of military bands who put forth an amazing performance. Also, the castle is located at the Royal Mile close to Old Town which makes it really central.

Here there are many things to do and see, for instance: eat at the castle, follow an itinerary like the Lang Stairs and Portcullis Gate, and visit the Great Hall. Use our helpful guide to visit the Edinburgh Castle .

Address: Castlehill, Edinburgh

Admission Fee: Adult £15.50, Concession £12.40, Child £9.30, and also family tickets are available

1) Explore the National Museum of Scotland

top things to do in edinburgh scotland

The National Museum of Scotland is without doubt a wonderful place to be in whether with family, friends, or by yourself. The entry is free and open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, which is perfect for families on a budget.

Moreover, this Museum intertwines Scottish antiques, culture, and history and is both fun and informative to explore. You’ll enjoy exploring different periods of Scottish history, the marvels of space, natural wonders, clothing and fashion, and exhibits from around the world. Kids will enjoy seeing the T. Rex skeleton and Moby the whale’s skull, while adults will appreciate the history of the royals like Mary Queen of Scots.

You can easily get to the museum by car, train, or bus since it’s centrally located on Chambers Street which is easy to locate. When at the museum don’t forget to eat at the Balcony Café if you get hungry, then visit the gift shop to find lovely souvenirs.

The Best Walking Tours in Edinburgh

The narrow and charming Circus Lane in historic Edinburgh, Scotland on a sunny day

I never get tired of visiting Edinburgh . I love the enchanting cobblestone streets, the world-class whisky bars, the plethora of free museums, and arty vibe of the city (it’s the inspiration for many, many writers).

It has been Scotland’s capital since the 15th century and has a history that stretches back millennia (humans have been in the area since 8500 BCE). There’s an epic medieval castle, an ancient volcano, the historic Old Town, and the New Town (both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites).

One of the best ways to soak it all up is by taking a walking tour. While ghost tours are some of the most popular here (Edinburgh is supposedly one of the most haunted cities in the world), there are many other tours to experience, from bike tours to food tours to pub crawls.

Here’s my list of the best walking tours in Edinburgh to help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most out of your stay!

Best Overall Tour

The Mercat Tours company logo

Mercat Tours

This family-owned company specializes in a variety of tours of the vaults under the city (a labyrinth of tunnels that were first used as storage and workshop space for businesses in the early 17th century), and it’s the only company to offer vault tours during the day . Adult-only tours include the infamous Canongate graveyard and there are even vault tours designed for kids .

Tours start at 20 GBP.

Best Free Tour

Edinburgh's City Explorer's tour company logo

City Explorers

City Explorers runs four different free walking tours daily. Start with the classic Edinburgh Free Tour, on which you’ll see and learn about the main sights, including Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and St Giles’ Cathedral. There’s also a free ghost tour, a free Harry Potter tour, and a free New Town tour as well. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!

While those two are my top recommendations for tours in Edinburgh, here are a few more options to help you make the most of your time here:

1. Secret Food Tours

Food is an important part of every culture. Scotland has all manner of interesting culinary delights, and the best way to learn more about them (while sampling a bunch) is by taking a food tour. Secret Food Tours offers the best one in Edinburgh. On their three-hour classic tour of Edinburgh’s Old Town , you’ll try delicacies like haggis, creamy Scottish cheese, neeps, and tatties (and learn what those even are), as well as enjoy traditional Scottish tea.

If you want to try more local spirits, you can take the Secret Whisky, Gin, & Beyond tour , which includes seven tastings of locally brewed and distilled liquors.

Prices start at 69 EUR.

2. A Wee Pedal Bike Tour

To cover more ground and get out of town a bit, take a bike tour. A Wee Pedal has several different offerings, so you can see more of Edinburgh and its surrounding countryside on two wheels. The most popular tour is the 20-mile loop tour , which circumnavigates the entire city. There’s also a 12-mile version that goes out to the rugged coastline for a more off-the-beaten-path adventure.

While rides are taken at a meandering, comfortable pace, you can also rent an e-bike for an extra 15 GBP if you’re not up for the challenge. You can also book special private tours, including one that ends at a brewery (tasting included), and a mountain bike tour.

Prices start at 65 GBP.

3. City of the Dead Tours

If you’re looking to get genuinely creeped out, take a tour with City of the Dead. They offer several tours that go through the underground vaults . City of the Dead is also the only tour company with access to the ominously named Black Mausoleum and Covenanter’s Prison , some of the most haunted places in the world. These spots are favorites of the Mackenzie Poltergeist, considered one of the world’s best-documented supernatural entities, with hundreds of supposed encounters. It’s one of my favorite tours in the city!

Prices start at 19 GBP.

4. Mountebank Tours

One of TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Things to Do in the UK, the Mountebank Comedy Walk, run by Daniel Downie, an award-winning stand-up comedian, is undoubtedly the most hilarious way to see Auld Reekie (an old nickname for the city). On this tour you’ll laugh and learn not only about Edinburgh but all things Scottish, from culture to history to some famous (and infamous) people. And if you’re lucky, Daniel’s adorable dog Bonnie Prince might even join you.

Prices start at 22 GBP.

5. See Your City

One of the biggest walking tour companies in the UK, See Your City offers several fun tours in Edinburgh. Their best (and most popular) is the Harry Potter walking tour , on which you’ll visit the places that inspired JK Rowling as she penned her famous series (and the café where she did so). You’ll even get sorted into your Hogwarts house and get to test your book and movie knowledge in a quiz to earn points. It’s a super fun tour and a must for Harry Potter fans.

Book Your Trip to Edinburgh: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Tours from Edinburgh

Tours from edinburgh, the capital of scotland.

Is your home haunted? Ours is. The misty streets of Edinburgh whisper of scorned lovers, exiled heroes, and scandalous royals. Be careful you don't get lost in one of the many closes along the Royal Mile at night... you might just run into the ghost of villains like Deacon Brodie. But breathe easy during the day, when Edinburgh's history is on full display in the many museums, galleries, and on every street. And when you've had your fill (can you ever?), you can tour the rest of Scotland with us. So, combine the magic of the city with a trip to see the majesty of the Highlands , the Borders , or the islands of Scotland .

Planning Your Tour from Edinburgh

Many come to tour Scotland from Edinburgh with an idea in mind. To breathe in the scent of whisky at their favourite distillery. That they'll be the one to spot Nessie. That they might see an even more mythical creature: the Scottish sun. Our small-group tours from Edinburgh range from 1-17 days, so we'd advise you to narrow down your must-see list.

Did You Know?

- As you wander the gorgeous scenery of Princes Street Gardens, remember it used to be a loch... a cesspit for the city's sewage and a place to drown witches. Over 200 skeletons were discovered when it was drained in the late 18th century. - Back in the 1800s, Edinburgh had the nickname Auld Reekie, meaning "old smokey" due to the poor air quality.

Don't Miss Out

- The best view of the city is debatable: from the top of the ancient volcano Arthur's Seat or from the historically-intriguing Calton Hill. - Stockbridge and Dean's Village are Edinburgh's beautiful siblings, always getting attention. It's no wonder, with timber houses and cobbled streets alongside a flowing river. - Climb the monument dedicated to Scotland's most legendary writer, Sir Walter Scott.
