A 5-star hotel is the design of Yuji Yamazaki that won him a 2015 International Hotel and Property Award for the Best Beach Hotel and a 2015 Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year Award for the Best Resort Hotel.

With a capacity for just 100 guests the resort sits on an island of around 12.6 acres and has 123,000 square feet (11,427 square meters) of interior space. 67,000 square feet (6,224 square meters) of solar panels outline the roof of a bridge connecting the bungalows.

Built from reclaimed wood and bamboo the city retreat uses wind and solar energy, collects rainwater, and employs LED lights for reduced energy consumption.

Sitting just outside Bangkok it is a great place for relaxing during weekends on elevated bamboo decks and terraces overlooking the jungle.

all of the facilities are clean and the foods are all fresh, and specially thanks to ms cherrie and all the staff of the resort for their fast service and very accomodating service.

The staff was helpful made it easy to travel with a 5 year old, who enjoyed everything. Food was good. Prices for one of the restaurant which served filipino dishes was decent with big servings. We also did one day tour which was Tour A,l. Our tour guide was amazing and so good travelling with kid, you both can experience without worrying.

Luxury stay at sunlight resort, the staff is very friendly and accommodating and the beaches and water Bungalows are stunning, perfect for a relaxing holiday.

The warm welcome and superb service from the staff. The concept of conserving the coral reefs and the diverse sea life is highly commendable and admirable. It is always a welcome sight to behold especially upon waking up in the morning. It is very quiet and serene and has a very exclusive ambiance. A great place to commune with nature.

We loved pretty much everything. It was a slice of paradise. The two beaches were beautiful and the pool was massive and deep and super clean. The restaurant was great with tasty and varied food. You can even buy cigars and premium spirits there! Staff were great and very warm. There were buggys to help you get around the island. Breakfast was awesome also.

När man kom med båten så var det ett fantastiskt mottagande😊 Bra dykcenter. Poolen var så fin som den såg ut på bilderna och stränderna var magiska. Korallreven var direkt intill stranden så man kunde snorkla över dom.

The hotel business is inherently not eco-friendly, but there are hotels all over the world striving to lessen their carbon footprint and operate in more eco-friendly way. The 5-star hotels listed below all incorporate sustainable practices into their operations and are working to conserve resources, recycle waste materials, and offer guests a greener way to enjoy a luxury vacation.

Please note that no hotel is 100% eco-friendly, and just because a hotel is listed here does not mean that every aspect of the hotel is sustainable. This is a list of 20 of the world’s best luxury eco hotels that have implemented meaningful green practices without compromising on luxury.

1) Mumbo Island, Malawi

Mumbo Island could be the most underrated eco hotel in the world. Located on the expansive waters of Lake Malawi National Park, Mumbo Island is a rustic luxury hotel that gives you the chance to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature, yourself and other guests on the island.

It is a place that makes you realize that the best things in life are the simplest – beautiful surroundings, delicious food, and wonderful people. There is no electricity, no cell phone service and no Wi-Fi – which forces guests to do a much-needed digital detox. There is also no running water, but your hot shower will be brought to your lake view bungalow by bucket.

All the rooms at 1 Hotel South Beach are inspired by nature and offer luxe eco amenities such as bamboo speakers, closet hangers made from recycled newspaper and in-room water filtration systems to remove the use of plastic bottles, and offer an unlimited fresh supply of drinking water for guests.

3) Six Senses Yao Noi, Thailand

I had the pleasure of staying at Six Senses Yao Noi several years ago and I was highly impressed by their dedication to sustainability and humanitarianism. Six Senses Yao Noi has its own water treatment and bottling plant on the property.

The resort produces drinking water through reverse osmosis and bottles it in reusable glass bottles. Proceeds from water sales are donated to help bring clean drinking water to people without access including two nearby schools.

Six Senses Yao Noi also supports local hospitals and churches. They also pride themselves on offering farm-to-table food by buying locally and growing produce in their own organic vegetable gardens.

This luxury eco hotel also incorporates numerous sustainable practices to reduce, reuse and recycle. And, as you can see from the photo below, they might have the best infinity pool on the planet.

4) Nihi Sumba Island, Indonesia

Located on Sumba Island in East Indonesia, just a short one hour flight from Bali, Nihi Sumba Island  (formerly Nihiwatu) was voted the #1 hotel in the world in all categories by Travel & Leisure in 2016 and 2017.

As an avid surfer and someone who cares about sustainability, having the opportunity to be hosted at this amazing eco resort was a highlight of my travel blogging career thus far.

Nihi is dedicated to preserving the natural environment and Sumbanese culture. All 33 ocean view suites and villas are individually decorated and hand-built with thatched roofs by Indonesian craftsmen using sustainable materials.

Nihi is also committed to being a carbon-neutral resort and is powered by bio-fuel produced from coconuts at its own bio-diesel factory. A portion of profits from the resort are donated to supporting Sumbanese schools, hospitals, and farms through the Sumba Foundation , providing access to clean drinking water, creating educational programs and lessening the effects of Malaria.

5) Soneva Fushi, Maldives 

Soneva Fushi effortlessly blends luxury with sustainability. This island hideaway, located on Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, and has proudly pioneered luxury travel in the Maldives .

At Soneva Fushi luxury villas and private residences are hidden among dense tropical foliage. Many are built to resemble tree houses and all of them open to their own private stretch of white sand beach, and most have their own private seawater swimming pools.

Environmental and social responsibility are at the core of the resort’s philosophy. Soneva Fushi has one of the largest solar power plants in the Maldives, and food is grown and sourced locally. Soneva Fushi also recycles waste materials, and it preserves ecosystems – there are two nature reserves on-site where sea turtles can nest.

6) Bawah Reserve, Indonesia

Bawah Reserve is a private island retreat that offers its guests a luxury escape in Indonesia’s Anambas archipelago. Made up of 6 Islands, 3 Lagoons and 13 Beaches, Bawah is a lush tropical paradise that you will never want to leave!

7) Hotel Forsthofalm, Austria

Hotel Forsthofalm is an environmentally-friendly ski-in ski-out hotel making use of a well-planned waste, water and energy concept. The hotel is built almost entirely of timber and glass, along with other natural, recyclable materials, which adds to its uniqueness and beauty.

Forsthofalm also creates some of its own energy from solar panels, and you will find energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the hotel. The hotel also prides themselves on serving organic, locally sourced produce and meats, and their spa and bathroom products are all made locally with locally sourced herbs.

They also launched the Song Saa Foundation , which creates and promotes projects that improve the wellbeing of the communities and natural environments of the Koh Rong Archipelago and beyond.

11) Sx Senses Qing Cheng Mountain, China

Located at the picturesque gateway to the majestic Qing Cheng Mountains, Six Senses Qing Cheng Mountain has been created to complement the UNESCO World Heritage & Natural Cultural site nearby Dujiangyan .

Drawing upon the renowned Six Senses perspective of responsible luxury, the resort has been brilliantly designed to incorporate regional architecture and landscaping, resulting in an extraordinary cultural offering with a strong sense of place wedded to contemporary attitude.

Guests are picked up in a Tesla Model S electric vehicle and whisked off to their suits that have private balconies or courtyard verandas with beautiful mountain views.

12) The Brando, French Polynesia 

The Brando is a unique luxury resort on French Polynesia’s breathtakingly beautiful private island of Tetiaroa – an atoll composed of a dozen small islands surrounding a sparkling lagoon 30 miles northeast of Tahiti.

The Brando offers carefree luxury in the midst of pristine nature. With access to the island by private plane, the resort features 35 villas on white-sand beaches frequented by sea turtles, manta rays and exotic birds. The resort was designed to reflect Polynesian lifestyles and culture.

The Brando is carbon neutral and almost 100% self-sustainable. All building materials used are of local or certified origin, renewable, or incorporate recycled components.

The Brando also uses a deep seawater air-conditioning system to reduce energy demands and utilizes renewable energy sources including solar power and coconut oil. Legendary actor Marlon Brando settled down here and the resort made headlines when President Barack Obama visited and when Pippa Middleton had her honeymoon here.

13) The Outpost Lodge, South Africa 

The Outpost Lodge accommodates 24 guests in 12 open plan, en-suite luxury spaces cantilevered on a hill overlooking the Luvuvhu River, on the edge of Kruger National Park.

The construction and operation of The Outpost Lodge is based on the principle that they want to make as little impact on the landscape and environment as possible, which they consider an ever-evolving process that grows more efficient with new technologies and practices each year.

14) Aman Bali Resorts, Indonesia

Aman offers five different, unique resorts in Indonesia that have implemented energy-saving and recycling programs in an effort to an effort to minimize their environmental impact. The Aman Bali resorts have also supported the Begawan Foundation  with the aim of saving the Bali Starling from the threat of extinction.

15) Longitude 131, Australia

Located in the barren desert landscapes of Australia’s Northern Territory,  Longitude 131° offers just 15 plush luxury tents built on stilts that leave the desert sand undisturbed, and the entire eco-resort runs on solar power.

All rooms have sweeping views of Ayers Rock, and the tranquil desert surrounding the resort. Guests at Longitude 131° can explore the nearby Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park listed wilderness and escape the business of everyday life in the privacy and peacefulness of this unique luxury eco-hotel.

16) North Island, Seychelles, East Africa

North Island in the Seychelles offers just 11 opulent hand-crafted villas, each with a private plunge pool, overlooking pristine, powder-white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

This luxury eco-hotel received National Geographic’s 2017 World Legacy Award , which honours companies in the travel sector that are driving the positive transformation of the tourism industry, showcasing leaders and visionaries in sustainable tourism best practices.

Once used as a copra (coconut kernels) plantation, North Island’s Noah’s Ark Project is now dedicated to undoing the significant loss of flora and fauna that resulted from this, while restoring the island’s natural habitat. Because of North Island’s efforts many indigenous wildlife species have returned, including both green and hawksbill turtles.

North Island also made headlines around the world when Prince William and Kate had their royal honeymoon here.

17) Ariara Resort, Philippines

The Times Magazine voted Ariara Resort “the best private island in the world” and Architectural Digest praised that Ariara is where “low impact design meets five-star luxury.”

The journey to get to this remote destination in the Philippines is not easy – it takes either a four-hour trimaran cruise or a one-hour speedboat ride from the port of Coron – but it is well worth it.

This gorgeous 125-acre private island resort was designed by Filipino architect Jorge Yulo and it consists of eight gorgeous villas and cottages that are made with locally sourced woods and custom-made furniture.

Meals are prepared by a private chef using fresh local seafood, as well as herbs and produce picked from the garden and orchard.

18) Bisma Eight, Bali, Indonesia

Bisma Eight is a stylish and modern boutique hotel tucked inside the jungles of Ubud, that greatly respects the environment around it. Featuring minimalist eco-luxe decor, Bisma Eight incorporates eco-design elements and is constructed from sustainable materials such as bamboo and jute.

We Are Travel Girls Ambassador Amanda Twine , who stayed here recently and loved it, says

“The bathroom amenities are presented in clay pots, which are re-filled as needed, as opposed to using plastic bottles. The air-conditioning switches off automatically when you leave the room, and the breakfast features a menu made from locally sourced organic produce. They even have their own fruit and vegetable garden on site.”

Bisma Eight only has a 4-star rating but if you are looking for a luxury hotel in Ubud that cares about the environment this boutique resort is a great option.

19) Safire Freycinet, Tasmania, Australia

Saffire Freycinet offers just 20 intimate suites built using a framework of environmental sustainability, with the purpose of rejuvenating the area which had been previously damaged as a caravan park and backpackers’ accommodation.

This luxury eco-hotel was built with sustainability in mind using energy-efficient insulation, double glazing, highly energy-efficient hot water usage and lighting, natural cycle airflow systems, and LED lighting.

Tasmania is known for its wild and diverse topography and Saffire Freycinet has been constructed to complement the island’s rugged beauty.

20) Andaz Maui, Hawaii, USA

Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is Hawaii ’s first LEED-certified hotel. The resort has a design approach that minimizes waste and harmful emissions, reduces energy and water consumption.

This eco-luxury hotel focuses on sustainable design as an integral component of its overall green strategy. Sustainable elements throughout the resort include a solar hot water system, variable speed chillers, motion sensor lighting controls and low flow plumbing fixtures.

Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort offers 290 guest rooms and suites, and seven residential villas perfectly positioned on the beautiful shores of Wailea.

Wow! To be Frank, these are some of the best eco-hotels I have seen in my life. Actually, this term eco-hotels sounds unique to me. I have never heard of this term eco-hotels, but they are so good and so calm. I have visited Thailand and Bali, but never seen to these resorts. Other places I have not yet visited, but I will soon visit them and try out your suggested places. I really liked your blog. Thank you for sharing such a great post.

A wave of demonstrations have swept the Canary Islands as locals protested against a tourism model they say has plundered the environment, priced them out of housing and forced them into precarious work.

The seven main Canary Islands are home to 2.2 million people - and welcomed almost 14 million international visitors in 2023, up 13% from the previous year.

The protests were not aimed at individual tourists, activists say, but at the governments that have created a system that skews so much in favour of investors at the expense of local communities.

The tourism industry accounts for 35% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the Canary Islands and local residents who spoke to Sky News agree the islands can't survive without tourism.

But they are also questioning whether local communities and the environment can survive if things stay the way they are.

What's the problem? Tourism is a 'cash cow' - but not for locals

If you're looking for what's behind the wave of protests, you need to look back decades, Sharon Backhouse tells Sky News.

Along with her Canarian husband, she owns GeoTenerife, which runs science field trips and training camps in the Canary Islands and conducts research into sustainable tourism.

The tourism model in the Canary Islands hasn't been updated since before the tourism boom of the 1980s, when the islands were "trying desperately" to attract investment, she explains.

The answer back then was a model that was "incredibly generous" to investors, who only pay 4% tax and can send the profits earned in the Canaries back to the firm's home country, Ms Backhouse explains.

But the model hasn't changed.

That's created a situation where "more and more of these giant, all inclusive resort hotels" are being built, and the proceeds of this "incredible cash cow" aren't shared equitably with the local population, she says.

"It is absurd to have a system where so much money is in the hands of a very few extremely powerful groups, and is then funnelled away from the Canary Islands," she says.

"We're seeing really low salaries, zero-hour contracts and awful working conditions in some of these hotels."

Ms Backhouse was at the 20 April protest in Tenerife and says she has "never seen anything like it" in terms of Canarians being united for a single cause.

'My misery, your paradise'

Earlier this year there was a spate of graffiti in Tenerife.

Andy Ward, director of Tenerife Estate Agents, tells Sky News the media coverage of a smattering of "tourists go home" graffiti has been "100x greater than the on-the-ground reality", where there is little visible animosity.

But there was one spray-painted message that sums up the gulf between Canary Islands residents and the tourists who flock there: "My misery, your paradise".

More than a third of the population of the Canary Islands - nearly 800,000 people - are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to a recent report from the environmental group Ecologists in Action.

The average wage for restaurant staff and cleaners is between €1,050 and €1,300 a month, Mr Ward says, while the cost of renting an apartment can be almost as much.

'Shanty towns' in the shadow of luxury

One of the main issues is the dearth of affordable or social housing, Mr Ward says.

"The governments here have completely neglected this need, instead selling land for more hotels and selling land for luxury villas and high-end apartments, which locals are unable to afford."

What has caused anger is property managers renting out properties to tourists that are "completely inappropriate and inadequate", such as small apartments in residential buildings.

The regulations on short-term lets "are a complete mess and a mish-mash", he says. Landlords aren’t incentivised to let their properties long-term because they must sign up to long leases, and if tenants default on the rent it can take 18 months to evict them.

His views are echoed by Kris Jones, a British citizen who was born in Tenerife, taking over the bar his parents owned in Playa de la Americas, the Drunk’n Duck.

Many hotel employees are forced to live in the multiple motorhome sites that have popped up around the south of the island because they can’t afford anything else, he says.

"Shanty towns" is what Ms Backhouse calls them, built in the shadow of "uber luxury hotels".

Mr Jones questions why planning permission has been granted to hotels without ensuring their employees will be able to live nearby.

He says the idea the island's population hates foreign visitors is "utter garbage".

He stresses that the protests were against the government - not tourists.

"It's nothing to do with the behaviour of British tourists, and isn't even part of the agenda at all," he tells Sky News.

Hunger strike to stop hotels

Protesters say they are having to take increasingly drastic actions to have their voices heard.

Subsequently six members of Canarias Se Agota - which translates to the Canary Islands Are Exhausted - have been on hunger strike since 11 April.

As well as demanding a halt to new tourism developments and a limit to the number of visitors, the campaigners want to stop the development of two luxury resorts in Tenerife.

Both developments faced legal hurdles on environmental grounds that had paused construction, but stop work orders were lifted earlier this year.

Campaigners maintain the developments breach environmental laws - claims the developers deny - and have committed to continuing the hunger strike until the government intervenes, despite some strikers needing hospital treatment.

The hunger strikers, who have not been named, were among fellow protesters on the streets of Tenerife on 20 April.

A spokesperson for the campaign said: "If anything happens to any of our comrades... you (Fernando Clavijo - president of the Canary Islands) will have to face the fury of the people."

The strikers met with the Canary Islands president on 23 April, but their demands were rejected.

Representatives of the strikers said on 26 April the "medical condition of the six is deteriorating, but they are determined to continue" until their demands are met.

Protesters are also demanding "access to respectable housing", an "eco-tax" and "immediate measures to put an end to the raw sewage discharges into the sea".

Salvar La Tejita, an environmental organisation which helped organise the mass protest, says: "It is vital to clarify that these protests are not against the tourists or tourism in general, but are against the political class, administrations, hotel chains, and constructors who are jointly responsible for the unsustainable circumstances which Tenerife is now in.

"This platform is not in any way responsible for the graffiti messages 'Tourists Go Home' which have been sprayed in and around many tourist resorts.

The environmental cost of tourism

The Canary Islands are a "biodiversity jewel in the Atlantic", Ms Backhouse says - but they haven't been fully protected or valued.

Politicians in the past have said the development of the controversial resorts can't be stopped "just because of a weed", she says.

"These aren't just weeds. What they're actually doing is interfering with an ecosystem which will have difficulty surviving if you plonk a resort right in the middle of it."

The building of these resorts has an environmental costs as "beautiful landscapes are cemented over", Ms Backhouse says - and the cost only mounts once they open.

"The problem with these resorts is that we just don't have enough resources in terms of water, what happens to all the rubbish, how is it all recycled.

"Locals are feeling disenfranchised from their spaces because it all becomes tourist territory.

"Towns and villages that locals grew up in or would go on holiday in suddenly are completely unrecognisable."

What solutions are on the table?

One of the proposals is a tourist tax which would be invested in protecting the environment.

Ms Backhouse says the hotel industry is against it and the government is nervous about it - but GeoTenerife's research indicates it wouldn't put tourists off.

"I think the reality is very few people will cancel their holiday because they have to pay a little bit of money that goes towards protecting the landscapes they're coming to see."

Hoteliers have proposed instead putting up IGIC, which is similar to VAT, but Ms Backhouse says that isn't welcomed by campaigners "because again, that just puts the onus on the locals to prop up the system".

A tourist tax is one part of the answer to protect the environment, but it doesn't answer the question of job insecurity and unaffordable housing.

Ms Backhouse says it is encouraging to see solutions proposed, but "it's going to take something far more wide-ranging to put this train on a more sustainable track".

Impending crackdown on holiday homes

A draft law is expected to be passed this year which would ban newly built properties from becoming short-term rentals and toughen up the rules for existing properties.

It comes as official figures show the number of rental beds on the island reached 220,409 in March this year - an increase of more than 40,000 from the same point in 2023.

Canaries regional tourism chief Jessica de Leon told the Reuters news agency that enforcement support for the islands' 35 inspectors is key to the success of the new rules.

"We are going to empower [the police] so that they can act when fraudulent behaviour is detected in homes," she said, adding that the plan could involve 1,300 people, which would include all of the islands' police forces.

"The first step is to contain the growth, the second is to clean up [existing listings]," said Canaries director of tourism Miguel Rodríguez.

An example of the crackdowns to come occurred on 16 April, when police raided a property in Tenerife after its owner was reported for listing the building's rooftop as a campsite on Airbnb, offering renters tents for €12 (£10) a night.

The plans have not proved popular with landlords, who would be forced to comply with the new rules within five years.

"Everything that the government is trying to impose is problematic," says a spokesperson for Ascav, the Canary Islands Vacation Rental Association, adding it is "the most restrictive" legislation of its kind in Europe.

They believe around 95% of the existing holiday homes that abide by current laws will not be able to meet the new criteria, which includes getting consent from local authorities to open, meeting higher energy classification thresholds, having a minimum surface area and more in a long list of "impossible compliance".

"The consequences will be immediate," they warn. "If holiday homes are banned on the islands, visitors who demand this type of accommodation will choose other destinations, Canary Islanders will be even poorer, bars, restaurants, rent a cars, supermarkets, leisure activities, etc. will lose economic activity. Undoubtedly, we all lose."

Ascav acknowledges "something is going wrong" for the island's economy, but argues it's not down to those providing holiday homes, nor the tourists Canarians "love".

"The message is for our governments, for their passivity, incompetence and lack of planning," they say.

"They are the ones that have allowed that the resources of tourism has not to been shared with the local population. Locals has been excluded because governments preferred permitting to exploit the territory and tourism to the maximum, without any return for the islands and their inhabitants.

"The solution is to listen to ourselves, to listen to our visitors, to listen and protect to the Canary islanders, to integrate, to plan, to be sustainable, to grow with, not at the expense of, to be responsible for the territory and the well-being of its people, to diversify, to ensure the quality of the destination.

"Our problems have to be resolved by politicians, but they lack will and predisposition, that's why we are fed up."

What have politicians said?

The islands' president said the day before the 20 April protests that he felt "proud" the region is a leading Spanish tourism spot, but acknowledged more controls are needed.

"We can't keep looking away. Otherwise, hotels will continue to open without any control," Fernando Clavijo told a news conference.

Two days after the protest, Mr Clavijo posted on X saying: "What happened last Saturday in the streets of Canarias leaves a message that we share. Canarias has to review its model, where we want to go.

"It had to be done during the pandemic, but it is a challenge that we assumed and on which we are already working with the councils, with the city councils and that we must face as a whole in society."

He has called a meeting of island presidents and Canary Island administrators on 30 April in the hope of finding a solution.
