'Outlander' Season 3 Claire and Jamie Reunion Spoilers

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from Sunday’s  Outlander , “Freedom & Whisky.”]

It was the reunion 20 years in the making, and  Outlander  finally brought  Voyager ‘s most iconic moment to life.

It took five episodes of  Starz’s  romance drama for Claire ( Caitriona   Balfe ) to travel back through the stones to find Jamie (Sam  Heughan ), and it was well worth the wait. The final moments of “Freedom & Whisky” took viewers right to the beginning of the print shop scene where Jamie fainted upon seeing Claire for the first time since she left him for the future before the Battle of  Culloden , and it was a moment ripped straight from the pages of Diana  Gabaldon’s  novel. But so much else happened in the hour before that long-awaited reunion.

The episode took place mostly in Claire’s time, after she and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) returned to Boston after giving up hope of finding Jamie again. Bree struggled with going back to business as usual, and after failing in school she decided to drop out of Harvard and move out from Claire’s home, resulting in a horrible argument between her and Claire.

'outlander' team explains those emotional goodbyes.

Roger (Richard Rankin) chose that awkward moment to surprise the Randall women in America, as he finally found evidence of where Jamie ended up after  Ardsmuir  prison closed. A printed poem written by a Alexander Malcolm contained phrases from a famous poet that shouldn’t have been written yet, and since Alexander Malcolm are Jamie’s two middle names, it was the evidence Claire needed to finally go back through the stones and reunite with her husband.

Claire wasn’t thrilled at Roger’s findings at first. But after an intense confrontation with Frank’s (Tobias Menzies) secret girlfriend — the one he was going to leave Claire for — and Bree finding out more about her parents’ marital issues, the two Randall women shared an emotional bonding moment where Bree told her mother to go to Jamie, that he needed her more than Bree did. Claire tied up her life in Boston, said goodbye and thanks to her friend Joe Abernathy ( Wil Johnson) and gathered supplies (like medicine and old coins to use for money) and appropriate clothing so she would be prepared, unlike her last journey through time. She shared a heartbreakingly beautiful goodbye with Bree, gave her the pearls that belonged to Jamie’s mother and left, knowing that Bree would be well taken care of by Roger, who stayed with her.

And Claire set out on her journey, traveling to the stones, arriving in Edinburgh and walking through the door of A. Malcolm’s print shop, finding Jamie, 20 years older but still the same man she married … as he promptly fainted. Executive producer Ron Moore reveals to  The Hollywood Reporter  that the next episode (airing in two weeks on Oct. 22) will actually take viewers back in time again to “change up the perspective of that door opening,” showing that moment from Jamie’s point-of-view.

“It was something I liked as we were breaking the story. I thought that it’s a great ‘out’ on the faint,” Moore says. “You’re not going to get a better out than that. Where do you pick up the next episode? We didn’t want to just repeat the joke. We didn’t want to just pick up in real time so it wouldn’t have any momentum in it anymore. So it felt like we should reset a little bit.”

Moore “wanted to know what Jamie was going through in his day,” so the story will rewind a bit to show that. “I like how we know a little bit ahead of the character, he doesn’t know what’s coming and we all do,” says the EP. “He’s living in Edinburgh and has this other life, who are all these people in that life? It’s a whole different atmosphere. I wanted to really relish and enjoy the tension of that waiting for the door bell to ring and to see what happened from his perspective. It was a fun way to set it up.”

'Outlander' Team Breaks Down Major Death and Surprise Return

Executive producer  Maril  Davis knew that the initial moment of Jamie and Claire seeing each other again for the first time in 20 years was the most important moment to get right.

“I’m most excited that we chose to do something that most people wouldn’t do, which is to spend about 40 minutes in one set with two characters and see them reconnecting,” Davis says of the next episode. “Most people would do like 10 minutes and then get out. It’s so long to sit with them in there, but to me, it’s a luxury and a journey. It’s a love letter to the fans to be, like, ‘Let’s see Jamie and Claire reunite and let’s have this bubble fantasy episode before all this stuff comes crashing down on them.’ They have to go back to the real world, so it’s a real luxurious time to spend with them, and I think the fans will really enjoy it.”

Moore and all the  Outlander  producers knew that the print shop scene is “an iconic scene in the book,” so they took their time in bringing it to life the right way.

“Gary Steele, our production designer, spent a lot of time designing the print shop. It was a big set on stage,” Moore says. “We just knew it was important so we made sure to give it the time and space and energy. We didn’t slavishly follow exactly the moment-by-moment of the book, but it basically did tell the same thread with a lot of the same dialogue and delivered what people wanted to see from that moment.”

Davis calls episode six, titled “A. Malcolm,” the “print shop episode.”  Balfe  praises writer Matt B. Roberts for his execution.

“It could have been the moment where the violins are playing and angels are singing and the sun comes out and she walks in and he sweeps her up in his arms,”  Balfe  says. “But it’s messy and complicated and parts of it are funny. It’s almost like they’re two teenagers who are kind of not quite sure what to do with their bodies or with their words. I loved that. It shouldn’t be perfect.”

'Outlander' Team Sounds Off on Claire and Frank's Dissolving Marriage

Because the moment is so one-sided with the surprise — “Claire had the opportunity for the journey to Scotland and the journey from the stones to Edinburgh to think about that moment, like maybe this will happen, or maybe that will happen. To play out every possible scenario,”  Balfe  says — getting to see that shock in full force from Jamie makes the moment authentic.

“Life is always completely different than what you imagine it to be,”  Balfe  continues. “I loved that. It was so nice. Sam and I had already been working together [since  Outlander  does not film episodes in order], but it was amazing to get through that moment. It’s such a big fan moment, but for us as actors, you don’t want to put too much pressure on those moments before you do them. You want to go in there and let it be as organic as possible. It was nice to get that behind you and move forward.”

But with Claire and Jamie’s reunion comes the moment viewers have to say goodbye to Bree and Roger (at least, until next season). Filming Claire and Bree’s goodbye was just as emotional for the actors as it was for viewers to watch.

“For Bree, she just lost Frank and everyone that she’s known and loved in her life has left,” Skelton says. “In Brianna’s head, she doesn’t know if she’ll ever see her mother again. It’s a really sad moment for Bree because there have been these 20 years of tension between mother and daughter, and Bree has finally gotten her answer as to why that is. They’ve finally started to patch up these wounds between them, they’ve become to get quite close and become friends actually, and then suddenly they’re torn apart.”

Skelton then laughs at the “beautiful irony” that the one thing that brings them together is also what tears them apart.

“They bond over this wonderful man being Brianna’s father and that’s brought them together, but at the same time he’s the reason Claire goes back,” Skelton says. “There’s just so much confusion for Bree in this episode. She doesn’t know who she is, she’s struggling with her own identity and now she’s losing Claire. This is why she’s turning to Roger, and it’s really nice to see Bree put on her brave face, not for herself but for someone else, her mother. Now Claire can leave without feeling guilty.”

'Outlander' Cast, Producers Break Down That Shockingly Emotional Premiere Death

Skelton loves how Bree’s selfless act of letting Claire go “shows how much Bree is maturing,” and calls it “a nice parallel to Jamie’s selfless deed” of sending Claire through the stones to safety to raise Bree all those years ago. And now, Bree and Roger are left alone to truly see where their relationship can go from here.

“All the circumstances leading up to this point, all of a sudden this veil has been dropped,” Rankin says, as Skelton adds with a laugh, “Now back to the mundane things in our lives!”

“Who knows where they go from here. We haven’t seen past that point yet [on the show],” Rankin says about where Roger and Bree’s journey will pick up next season. “We’ve forged such a deep connection that I don’t think anything is really going to break that. That’s going to be something that continues for Roger and Brianna. They’re quite stubborn souls and they like to be right. We have a very interesting, fighting, temperamental relationship.”

Both Skelton and Rankin are eager to see how Roger and Bree’s relationship grows in season four.

“It’s such a unique scenario that they’ve gone through,” Skelton says. “And the fact that they’ve gone through it together, they’re the one person in each other’s lives who genuinely understands each other and genuinely knows each other.”

Outlander midseason finale recap: Jamie and Claire return home

And so does Roger.

It's good that Claire ( Caitriona Balfe ) is a physician, unbothered by blood and missing appendages. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been able to scour through acres and acres of dead bodies looking for Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) after a battle. She's also pretty good at waving a sword while threatening to kill someone. That woman picking through Jamie's pockets didn't stand a chance.

Claire comes undone when Jamie whispers, "That tickles," as she inspects his listless bloody body for injuries. Why is he passed out on the front lines? How come he can't get over his stupid hero complex? He could have been killed, and she is furious.

Jamie eventually allows her to vent as she cleans his hand. He learns that Ian ( John Bell ) is alive (good) and that we won the battle. Jamie's mood is somber, which makes perfect sense. He's worried about William (Charles Vandervaart). A victory for him could be the death of his son.

The rebels are causing quite a stir. Jamie receives praise for breaking the British line, scattering their soldiers, and saving 50 men in the process. Jamie waves off the compliment. He would do it again to save 10 men. Or five. Or even one. Claire silently cries as she realizes this stupid hero complex isn't going anywhere soon.

Fast forward two weeks, and Jamie's hand is looking pretty good. Way to go, Dr. Claire! Ian notices his aunty's lack of enthusiasm at this encouraging news and presses her to spill the beans. A healthy hand means Jamie will be going back to war. How will she manage?

Speaking of managing, how is Rollo still alive after eating an entire canister of goose grease? Join me as I skip right over the disturbing details of the advantages of goose grease when used in digestive distress situations and instead rejoice over Ian throwing all caution to the wind by kissing Rachel (Izzy Meikle Small).

Sure, she slapped his face for such shenanigans. But she did lean back in when he boldly proclaimed that she loved him and needed to step away, or he would take her right there. Ian is not playing around. And it sounds like Rachel might be interested in following in the wayward footsteps of her brother. Asking him to pray about Ian meant there were definite vibes. Her heavy breathing was also a dead giveaway.

Meanwhile, a man visits Claire's tent to inquire about a trade. He's willing to give her a bottle of painkiller in exchange for some cinchona bark, which he needs to treat a soldier with malaria.

Then they debate back and forth over the importance of knowing one's limits as Jamie walks up to join the conversation. When asked his philosophical take, Jamie quotes, "A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?"

The man is delighted by Jamie's line and insists on learning the poet's name who penned this intriguing take on life. Neither Jamie nor Claire mentions the name Robert Browning since he hasn't been born yet.

The trio exchange goodbyes, and that's when Claire realizes she doesn't even know the man's name. He laughs, appalled that he just snagged some much-needed bark without introducing himself. Everyone, say hello to Benedict Arnold.

Jamie wonders why Claire looks shocked. The men will follow General Arnold anywhere. He's beloved. Didn't she enjoy his company? He's so fun and charming!

Claire wastes no time spilling the tea. This guy becomes disillusioned, switches sides, and goes down in history as nothing more than a traitor. Jamie wonders if they should let it happen, but Claire quickly reminds him that he is a turncoat in her timeline, and America wins. What if they stop him? Will America lose?

Suddenly, the scene switches to the second battle of Saratoga. Daniel Morgan is shouting for his gunmen to put a bullet through General Simon Fraser (Angus Macfadyen). Jamie can't seem to pull the trigger that will result in his cousin's death, so he jerks his rifle slightly at the last second. This results in the hat blowing off a stunned soldier's head. That soldier is William.

Obviously, this rattles Jamie for a few seconds. A rebel in a tree lands the money shot, and General Fraser slumps over his horse, with William at his side rushing him to safety. The Brits become confused as their leader is whisked away, and they begin to retreat. The rebels run after them in full force, following Benedict Arnold's lead.

Jamie manages to make it all the way to the fort. Then he CrossFits his way right up that fort, taking down as many red coats as possible in the process. Everything seems to be in slow motion as he searches frantically for his son. Ian saves Jamie once or twice with a tomahawk because that's what Ian does. Then Jamie spies General Arnold, injured.

It's unclear if Jamie saves Benedict, but we find Claire at his side, nursing his wounded leg. Benedict is livid. He should have died on the battlefield. Then he launches a defensive rant about how he has constantly been robbed of honor and promotion. He hates the leadership who is in charge of his fate and wonders out loud if he will ever be remembered.

Claire assures him he will be.

Later that night, a soldier bearing a flag of truce asks Jamie to accompany him to the British camp. His cousin Simon is about to die and has requested Jamie's presence. Jamie makes his way with Claire to Simon's tent, and the cousins share a sweet moment before the general passes away.

Claire leaves Jamie to say his peace and runs into William outside. When a British soldier relays the news to William that Simon has died, he inquires about William's missing hat and is disappointed to hear that a rebel shot it off his head.

Claire steals away to inform Jamie that William is right there. With boldness and teary eyes, Jamie marches up to William and says, "I believe I owe you a hat, sir." Then he walks away without another word. He finally spoke to his son as a man. That's all Jamie needed.

Once back at the camp, General Gates (Ged Simmons) asks for a private audience with Jamie, and we all assume he will be promoted to an essential military person who rides a horse. Instead, according to the terms of the surrender, General Fraser asked for someone to take his body back to Scotland to bury it properly. That someone is James Fraser. Sign Claire up!

Poor Ian has to leave his dog and his heart with Rachel. Rachel meets Mr. Bug (Hugh Ross) on the road, who recognizes Rollo and will probably do something heinous to him, but we can't worry about that right now. Thanks to a ride on one of His Majesty's ships, the Frasers are back in Scotland!

This is super handy since that horrible man Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton) has stolen little Jemmy , forcing Roger (Richard Rankin) and Buck (Diarmaid Murtagh) to go through the stones after them. If you can't depend on family to help you find your kid (who is the only one who knows where hidden Jacobite gold is located), who can you trust?

Outlander Season 7 Episode 2 Recap: The Happiest Place on Earth

of Outlander Season 7 Episode 2 Recap: The Happiest Place on Earth

The second episode of Starz’s historical series ‘ Outlander ’ season 7, titled ‘The Happiest Place on Earth,’ revolves around Claire Fraser’s return to Fraser’s Ridge after becoming a free woman along with her husband James “Jamie” MacKenzie Fraser. Brianna gives birth to a daughter in the presence of her husband Roger and father Jamie with the help of Claire. The nurse gets concerned about her granddaughter’s health, which leads Bree and her family to a significant decision. Claire learns the truth about Malva Christie’s death as well. The engrossing episode ends with a startling cliffhanger and here’s everything you need to know about the same! SPOILERS AHEAD.

Outlander Season 7 Episode 2 Recap

‘The Happiest Place on Earth’ begins with Claire returning to Fraser’s Ridge from Wilmington as a free woman with Jamie. She meets Allan Christie, who sits near his half-sister Malva’s grave in distress. Claire learns from Allan that he had a sexual relationship with Malva and that he fathered her baby , rather than Jamie as per the girl’s accusation. He also adds that he forced Malva to accuse Jamie, hoping to receive a sum of money from the Scotsman to settle the predicament. Allan then killed Malva when she set out to reveal the truth to Frasers when she got immersed in guilt. Allan tries to kill himself but Claire stops him. But Young Ian, who listens to the whole conversation, ends up killing him with an arrow.

A considerable period after Claire’s release from prison, the Fraser family welcomes a new member as Bree gives birth to a daughter, who is named Amanda “Mandy” MacKenzie. Claire notices blue marks on the nails of the newborn baby and listens to the latter’s heartbeats, only to realize that her granddaughter is suffering from a heart condition that stops the organ from pumping blood to the rest of the body. Since the nurse cannot perform surgery, she lets her daughter know that there’s nothing she can do to save Amanda. To save the life of her daughter, Bree decides to return to the 20 th century with her husband Roger and son Jeremiah “Jem” MacKenzie.

The Frasers leave the Ridge for Bree and her family to travel to the future through the stones. Bree meets Lord John Grey and William Ransom, only for her to encounter the latter’s passion to fight for his country. She asks John whether it is unfair to William to not reveal to him that his real father is Jamie. John eventually meets Jamie, who approves of the former’s decision to raise William without telling him the truth about his real father. John asks Jamie about his decision to fight against the Crown and his son. Jamie lets his friend know that he doesn’t want to change his decision and they decide to not meet as friends again for a while.

Outlander Season 7 Episode 2 Ending: Do Brianna and Roger Go Back to the Future? Will They Meet Claire and Jamie Again?

Yes, Brianna and Roger go back to the future and end up in the 20 th century. Bree and Roger initially think that they cannot go back to the future since they have doubts concerning Jem’s fatherhood . The Frasers initially believe that Jem’s father is a rapist, only to realize that it is not the case. During Bree and Roger’s trip to Edenton, they realize that Roger is the real father of Jem, which makes the boy a “traveler.” Although the family is worried whether Amanda, a tiny baby, will travel through the stones, they eventually learn that it is possible.

does claire travel back to jamie

After walking through a stone, Bree and her family, including Amanda, end up in the twentieth century. They see an airplane flying in the sky, which confirms that they are back in the future. Ever since Bree and her family’s departure, Claire stoops to immense distress. She fails to come to terms with her belief that she will never see her daughter again. Jamie asks her to seek comfort in the fact that Bree and her family aren’t dead. Claire tries to do the same while hoping that her granddaughter survives. According to Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ novels, which serve as the source texts of the show, Amanda overcomes the threat to her life and remains alive.

Bree and Roger’s decision to go back to the 20 th century saves the life of their daughter Amanda. In addition, if the series faithfully depicts the novels, we can also expect Claire and Jamie’s reunion with Bree and her family. The eighth book of the novel series, ‘Written in My Own Heart’s Blood,’ ends with Bree, Roger, Jem, and Amanda returning to the past to be with Claire and Jamie.

Are Jamie and Claire Dead or Alive?

After Bree’s return to the 20 th century with her family, Claire one day encounters Wendigo Donner at her house with a group of men. Donner looks for gemstones so that he can travel back to the future, only to break down bottles of ether. While lighting a matchstick, a fire starts at the house with an explosion with Claire and Jamie inside. However, Jamie and Claire are supposed to survive the incident, as per Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ novels. In ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes,’ the couple survives the fire.

“Jamie seized my arm and hurled me toward the door; I staggered out, fell into the blackberry bushes, and rolled through them, thrashing and flailing at my smoking skirts,” states the novel about Jamie and Claire’s escape. Although the couple survives the fire, Donner and his men die due to the same. In the novels, Jamie and Claire make a significant decision concerning their future after surviving the fire. They decide to leave for Scotland with Young Ian. Jamie most likely will try to get his printing press back to America as well. Jamie and Claire’s journey to Scotland, motivated by the fire and its aftermath, paves the way for several startling events that turn their lives around.

Thank God ‘Outlander’ Brought Claire and Jamie Back to Scotland

Where to stream:, hulu’s ‘acotar’ tv show hits another speed bump after ‘outlander’ showrunner ronald d. moore exits , stream it or skip it: ‘the serpent queen’ season 2 on starz, where catherine de’ medici schemes to hold onto power as her son matures as king, ‘outlander’ season 7 part 2 release date revealed in dramatic new teaser trailer: “would you not sacrifice everything for love”, ‘outlander’ season 8: everything we know so far about the final season of the starz hit show.

Outlander Season 7 Episode 8 “Turning Points” ends by taking Claire ( Caitriona Balfe ) and Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) back to where the Starz show began: Scotland. For years, James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser and his Sassenach have lived on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Although they built a beautiful life for themselves on Fraser’s Ridge, I personally preferred the early years of their storyline specifically because I adored the Scottish setting. The verdant Highlands, cantankerous clans, and picturesque castles added a romantic backdrop to Outlander that North Carolina could simply never match. (Yes, I know Scotland doubles for the Americas on Outlander , but I still missed the lochs and hills, okay?)

Outlander Season 7 might have already brought Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) back to 20th century Scotland, but the mid-season finale does one better by reuniting Claire and Jamie with the place their epic love story began. I am truly excited that Outlander Season 7 Part 2 will follow Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian (John Bell) back in Scotland. It will be like a homecoming for the characters and fans alike. Once more, Outlander will embrace its Scottish time travel romance fantasy setting. Ergo, I can’t wait for new episodes of Outlander to premiere on Starz already.

When Outlander premiered nine years ago in August 2004, we were introduced to an English nurse enjoying a second honeymoon with her husband in Inverness in the aftermath of World War II. While exploring the intoxicating landscape, Claire stumbled upon a druidic ceremony at Craigh na Dun. The curious woman approached the ancient stones and soon found herself flung two centuries back to 1740s Scotland. In true fantasy form, a strapping and handsome ginger Scot named Jamie comes to her rescue. Soon, they are on a collision course for a true love so powerful it defies the very nature of reality.

I can’t lie. Part of what made me fall so hard for Claire and Jamie’s love story in the first place was the setting. Everything about Outlander ‘s version of 1700s Scotland was seductive to me, whether it was the jade green highlands or the misty air that made everything feel like a dream. Claire was the perfect avatar for the audience: a 20th century women armed with beauty, courage, education, and a low tolerance for bullshit. Jamie, additionally, seemed torn off the cover of a romance novel. He could recite Latin as readily as he could launch daring rescue missions. And don’t get me started on the textiles. Jamie’s tartans, Claire’s knits, and every bit of costuming felt plucked out of a hyper-specific fantasy.

Perhaps it is simply because I’m an American that Outlander ‘s colonial setting never felt as magical as its Scottish one did. I spent my childhood visiting Valley Forge, Colonial Williamsburg, and the wilds of North Carolina. The whole Fraser’s Ridge storyline simply wasn’t as interesting to me as everything Claire experience in Scotland. That was an old country, defined by myth, legend, and mysteries. Its distance from my own reality made me believe in Jamie and Claire’s story even more.

As Outlander slinks closer and closer to its eventual end point — Starz has confirmed that Season 8 will be the show’s final season — it feels nice to remember the beginning. I, for one, have not forgotten the ghostly Highlander spotted staring longingly at Claire’s 1940s window! I still want to see how Jamie and Claire’s story could possibly end. Most of all, I want to see these beloved characters back in Scotland. I want to see Outlander come home.

Luckily for me, Starz should be making my wish come true when Outlander Season 7 returns in early 2024.

Sam Heughan Explains Jamie and Claire’s ‘Most Intimate’ Outlander Moment Yet

A scene from Outlander season 5

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Outlander season five.

If I've learned anything watching Outlander, it's that I never really know where the show's going next—and I plowed through the eight-book series it's based on before the show aired. Catching up with Sam Heughan , who plays Jamie Fraser, confirms studying up on The Fiery Cross hasn't prepared fans for the dramatic twists throughout Outlander 's fifth season . For the record, Heughan doesn't mind toying with our emotions.

Take the aftermath of episode seven's cliff-hanger. In "The Ballad of Roger Mac," Jamie's son-in-law Roger Mackenzie is mistaken for a member of the Regulator militia and hanged. We learn Roger lives in the next episode, but fans who knew that would happen were still devastated. "I loved recently seeing people get so angry that they thought we’d actually killed Roger off," Heughan says with a laugh. "They were like, 'You’ve actually killed him? He’s alive in the books! What’ve you done?!' It’s great that we can still tease and play with their expectations."

That was two episodes ago, and Outlander 's already throwing new curveballs at the Fraser clan. Jamie's been through it in season five: Protecting his family in the North Carolina colonies has meant temporarily fighting alongside the British Army—a moral betrayal given Jamie's Scottish Highlander roots—and watching his uncle, Murtagh, die at the Battle of Alamance. Just when viewers thought Jamie was safe, he nearly dies from a venomous snake bite in episode nine.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Nearly everything is dangerous in 1771, when Outlander 's current season takes place. But the new threat to Jamie's life "really comes out of nowhere," Heughan says. "Jamie’s always put his body on the line and is very aware of his strength and his fortitude. So when he’s first bitten by the snake, he really isn’t too concerned, but then it escalates very quickly, and Jamie is faced with his own mortality."

Watching Jamie's wound fester and rot is bad; watching Claire's futile attempt to heal him back at Fraser's Ridge is downright painful. At the episode's climax, Jamie nearly succumbs to illness caused by his wound. Through the haze of a fever, he asks Claire to touch him. That touch somehow gives him the strength to stay alive. "I knew you were the one thing that could bring me back," he tells her.

I'll admit it's a spiritual swerve from Claire's usual methods as Outlander 's resident healer. So I asked Sam Heughan to explain what's really happening here. "What we wanted to do was show that through her touch—I think that she has this ability, I wouldn’t say it’s magical, but maybe it is," he says. "She has this healing ability in her hands and in her body. I think it’s her love and her presence that certainly brings him back from the edge."

It's the second time the strength of Jamie and Claire's love has saved Jamie's life. "I always felt that the same had happened to him before, on the battlefield at Culloden [in season three]," Heughan explains. "He sort of took his last breath, and he got a glimpse at the afterlife, but in the end I think he saw Claire."

A scene from Outlander Season 5

Jamie and Claire's bond is so powerful in these scenes, Heughan argues the couple's lifesaving moment goes where their steamiest sex scenes haven't. "For me, that’s probably the most intimate moment we’ve had for quite a long time," he says. "But it’s not them having sex, it’s something deeper than that. It’s hard to find a new way of showing that and expressing that, and that’s certainly what Caitriona [Balfe, who plays Claire] and I pushed for in those scenes."

Intimate, yes. A substitute for season one's wedding scene ? Not necessarily. But glimpses like this will become more common now that Jamie and Claire's family (and extended family, and tenants at Fraser's Ridge) are cutting into their alone time. "I think you see a new sensitivity and intimacy between Jamie and Claire that’s not what you think it’s going to be. It is Outlander and some pretty terrible things happen," Heughan hedges. "If time would only allow them to be together! Then we’d probably explore this more."

Ben Affleck Reportedly Presented a ‘False Narrative’ in the Jennifer Lopez Documentary

What about the semi-supernatural implications of Claire's healing abilities and Jamie's brush with the afterlife? "To be honest, I think there’s still stuff to be revealed. I sort of secretly know what it is, but [it'll be] revealed by Diana [Gabaldon, the series creator] with these next few books and the next few seasons," Heughan says. "For the time being, Jamie has chosen to remain here on this planet with Claire and they need each other."

There are still three episodes left in the season, ample time for Outlander to play our hearts like Roger Mac's guitar. Villain Stephen Bonnet is still at large, and Jamie won't rest until he's six feet under. Series diehards know whether Jamie succeeds; Heughan tells me the most exciting moments of the season are saved for the finale regardless.

"I think people that read the books know what happens, but even those people are going to be surprised by the way that it’s been shot and the way that we approached it," Heughan says. "Jamie and Claire'll certainly need each other for the next few episodes, and certainly this finale is going to be really testing for them both." I hope we can handle it.

Outlander Is Back and Better Than Ever

What's Next For Claire And Jamie In Outlander Season 7? Here's What We Know (And Suspect) After The Midseason Finale

I'm already ready for the second half of Season 7.

Caitriona Balfe as Claire Fraser in Outlander Season 7 midseason finale

Spoilers ahead for the midseason finale of Outlander Season 7, called "Turning Points."

The first half of Outlander 's super-sized Season 7 has officially come to a close with a midseason finale that involved some big twists, some reveals that most fans probably saw coming, the introduction of a famous traitor from American history, and a surprisingly peaceful ending. With no word of when the Starz drama will return with the second half of Season 7 other than that it won't be before the end of the year, let's look at what happened in "Turning Points," what has been revealed about what's still to come, and what we can safely guess is on the way.

Now, as somebody who is several books behind in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novel saga and enjoying the unspoiled ride of the show, this will be entirely spoiler-free for the events of the books .

Young Ian, Jamie, and Claire in Outlander's Season 7 midseason finale

The Biggest Midseason Finale Takeaways

The reveal that undoubtedly came as a surprise to nobody was that Jamie was still very much alive, despite looking like he was on death's door when last seen in the previous episode. Once he was somewhat recovered following one of the episode's several time jumps, he went back into battle against Simon Fraser and his men. Rather than kill his own cousin, Jamie deliberately fired wide... and shot the hat off of William , nearly killing his own son. Simon would die anyway by the end of the hour, which would set up Jamie, Claire , and Young Ian to finally return to Scotland.

Simon's request for his remains was that they be taken back to his home country, and Jamie was given the mission of conveying his late cousin across the pond as part of the terms of British surrender on their front. Young Ian was a little reluctant to leave Rachel behind (and couldn't take Rollo with him), but he, Jamie, and Claire sailed to Scotland and set eyes on land before the final credits rolled without any further catastrophe. Even another bout of seasickness didn't ruin the emotion of setting eyes on Scotland again for Jamie!

Catastrophe may be on the way for other characters, though. None other than Arch Bug reappeared for the first time since shortly after Young Ian accidentally killed his wife. Revenge is clearly still on his mind, as he spotted Rachel with Rollo and realized that Ian must truly love her to be entrusted with the care of the dog. That love triangle heating up may backfire for her! At least she has her brother.

Plus, Roger and Buck are on the mission to save Jem from Rob Cameron in the 18th century, while Brianna stayed behind in the '80s with Mandy . Rob has a big head start on them, while they have the advantage of familiarity with the time period.

So, the midseason finale ended with Claire, Jamie, and Young Ian safely arrived back on their home shore; Rachel blissfully unaware that she could be the target of Arch Bug's revenge on Young Ian; William safe for the moment due to British surrender; Roger and Buck traveling back in time to chase after Jem and Rob; and Bree alone except for Mandy in '80s Lallybroch. With that, let's look ahead to the future!

Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser in Outlander Season 7

A Fraser Family Reunion Is Coming

Jamie intends to make good on his promise that he would one day bring Young Ian back to Jenny , and casting news suggests that there's going to be a big Fraser family reunion back at Lallybroch. A number of actors whose characters were still alive when Outlander was last set in Scotland will be back: Steve Cree ( Ian Murray ), Nell Hudson ( Laoghaire ), and Layla Burns ( Joan MacKimmie ). Kristin Atherton of Shakespeare & Hathaway will also appear in the role of Jenny Murray, replacing original actress Laura Donnelly . I'm a little sad that Marsali and Fergus won't be part of the big reunion, but there will be some familiar faces!

Graham McTavish on Outlander

Long-Dead Characters Will Appear (And Launch The Spinoff?)

Other family members of various Outlander characters will appear, but their roles are harder to explain outside of flashbacks. Graham McTavish will be back as Dougal MacKenzie, who was killed by Jamie way back in Season 2. Lotte Verbeek returns as Geillis Duncan , whose demise came violently at Claire's hand in the Season 3 finale to set up Season 4.

Plus, Andrew Whipp will be back as Brian Fraser , who was dead by the time the show picked up in Season 1. That said, Starz is moving forward with the Outlander: Blood of My Blood prequel spinoff centered on Jamie's parents, so perhaps Brian's appearance in Season 7 – presumably via flashback – will be in service of setting up the spinoff beyond what we know so far .

Hugh Ross as Arch Bug in Outlander Season 7 midseason finale

Arch Bug Still Wants His Revenge

Arch Bug returned for the midseason finale, and although he only appeared in one brief scene with Rachel, that one scene was enough to prove that he definitely hasn't let go of his vow for revenge against Young Ian for Mrs. Bug 's death . When actor Hugh Ross spoke with CinemaBlend earlier this season, he previewed that while "it doesn't happen overnight," Arch Bug "gets his vengeance." At the time, he wasn't sure if he would appear again in the first half of Season 7, but shared that he would be back "certainly a little bit more… in the second part." This seems like bad news for Rachel, but surely Arch wouldn't do anything while Ian is across the ocean... right?

David Berry as Lord John Grey in Outlander Season 7B promo

Lord John Returns And More Promo Teases

There was a brief promo for the second half of Season 7 that released after the end of "Turning Points," and can easily be revisited if you watch Outlander via a Hulu subscription and jump ahead to the last 16 seconds of the episode! The footage shows some vague shots, like Claire, Jamie, and Young Ian on horseback and a tearful Bree in the car with Mandy.

But there's also the reveal that David Berry will return as Lord John Grey, and that could be especially interesting after how he and Jamie parted early in Season 7 . There may also be a funeral happening in Scotland, if the monument, stone slabs, and bagpipe player are any indication! Jamie has a voiceover saying that "A storm is coming," but when isn't a storm coming for the Frasers on Outlander ?

Questions That Still Need Answers

For all the bits and pieces of information that we can glean for the second half of Season 7, there are still plenty of questions. Will Jamie, Claire, and Ian encounter Roger and Buck now that the latter two have traveled back in time and the former three are in Scotland? How the timelines match up at this point is a little unclear, but could they join forces to find Jem before he's taken to America? Or does Rob Cameron have too much of a head start?

Will Jamie, Claire, and/or Ian return to America before the end of the season? Arch Bug still has his vengeance to pursue, after all, and there are several series regulars who were left behind to continue the Revolutionary War. Could they come back even if they wanted to, presuming a blockade? American history ( as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton ) tells us that the French are going to support the Americans against the Brits with guns and ships. And what kinds of time jumps are still to come, with Outlander ending in Season 8 ?

The answers to all these questions (and more) won't come before the end of the year, so we can only speculate for the time being... and hope that the second half of Outlander Season 7 arrives earlier rather than later in 2024! Even though there are plenty of interesting options still left in the 2023 TV schedule , I'm already ready for more Outlander .

‘Outlander’ Season 7: Everything to Know About Jamie and Claire’s Next Adventures Amid the American Revolution

Does 'outlander' season 7 have a release date.

Back to Fraser's Ridge. Outlander fans have been waiting for season 7 since May 2022, and the hiatus (nicknamed "droughtlander") finally has an end in sight.

Outlander season 7 will debut in summer 2023, Starz announced in December 2022. The network revealed that Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) and Claire ( Caitríona Balfe ) will be back in a trailer released just ahead of the holidays.

The teaser features Jamie telling Claire about a dream. "There was light all around you. It wasn't a candle light nor fire light. I thought, 'Now that must be what electric light is like,'" the 18th century Highlander tells his wife.

Claire, who time-traveled from the 20th century, asks, "How can you recognize something you've never seen in real life?"

It's simple to Jamie, who replies, "I dream of the past. Why would I not dream of the future?"

The twosome look happy in bed together in one scene, but it quickly becomes clear that it won't be all romance for the Frasers. The American Revolution is in full swing with a notice about the Declaration of Independence being ripped down, a casket being carried to a grave and Claire in a noose at the gallows.

The sixth season of Outlander ended with Claire being arrested for murder, and Jamie has to find her. “We pick up shortly after the end of last season, which is a great cliffhanger,” Heughan exclusively told Us Weekly in June 2022.

“America really is in sort of turmoil. There’s revolution, and Jamie and Claire are separated,” the Waypoints author teased. “There’s also the prophecy of Jamie and Claire’s death, you know, that they’re supposed to die in a fire. There’s just so much going on.”

That's partly because last season was cut short after the eighth episode amid COVID-19 protocols and Balfe’s maternity leave (she and husband Tony McGill welcomed a baby boy in August 2021). The four missing installments will be part of the upcoming season, bringing the historical drama 's 2023 arc to 16 episodes.

“This really is a super-sized season,” Heughan told Us . “We really start off with a bang. The first couple episodes are really strong."

As they head into season 7, it's still hard for the Scottish actor to imagine Outlander coming to an end one day. "We've been in it for so long now, [and Balfe and I] talked about what it would be like without the show. And I think both of us — I don't know. It's gonna be like not having your whole life, right? And it is, it's my whole life, so it will be strange."

He doesn't have to worry about running out of story, though. Diana Gabaldon 's Outlander book series includes nine novels so far and the author has stated the 10th will likely be the final book.

"I suppose you do [think about it as a 10-season show]," Heughan said. “I know that we've pulled from other books last season — this season as well we're doing that. ... There's so much still to happen before we even get toward the end. But we shall see, I guess. It's all in Diana Gabaldon's wonderful mind."

The Entire Outlander Timeline Explained

Outlander Claire and Jamie

If you're not familiar with Outlander , this historical drama — based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon — follows Claire (Caitriona Balfe), an English World War II nurse who finds herself tossed 200 years back in time and falls deeply in love with a saucy Scotsman named James Fraser (Sam Heughan).

A romance with a sci-fi heart, Outlander finds its characters crossing multiple timelines in their quests for love and family. From 18th century fights for Scottish freedom to the opulent palaces of Paris and 1960s hippies and peace protests, this addictively twisty series covers a lot of ground. The relationship between Claire and Jamie is the constant beating heart of the story, no matter what time period or country the characters find themselves in, but even with that star-crossed bond rooting the show, things can get confusing. Whether you're a new viewer or you're looking for a refresher before diving back in, here's a comprehensive look at the complete, complex  Outlander  timeline.

Spring 1945: Scottish time travel

Outlander Claire and Frank

When Outlander  begins its first season, World War II has ended, and nurse Claire Randall is on a second honeymoon with her husband Frank (Tobias Menzies). They visit the Scottish town of Inverness to search the records of Frank's family and learn more about his ancestor Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, an English officer who had a reputation for torture. Randall was also responsible for squashing the Jacobite uprising of 1745, in which Scottish rebels tried to reinstate Charles Stuart to the English throne.

While in Scotland, Claire and Frank visit the ancient Druid stone circle of Craig Na Dun, where they observe a ritual being performed by women who seem to be able to harness the stones' magic, or at least believe they can. When Claire returns the next morning to investigate a plant for her botanical healing interests, she hears a humming sound and finds herself drawn to the stone circle. She stumbles through the stones, tumbling 200 years into the past. When Claire wakes up underneath the circle, she finds herself in the year 1743.

Summer 1743: Thrown into the past

Outlander Claire and Jamie

The first person Claire encounters after her incredible arrival in 1743 is none other than Black Jack Randall, her husband's evil ancestor. Randall attempts to take her prisoner, but she's saved by a group of Scottish rebels, including the dashing Jamie. Claire uses her advanced medical knowledge to heal his dislocated shoulder and endears herself to the clan by using her experience with 20th century medicine. She's taken in by Clan McKenzie to live at Castle Leoch, where she befriends a mysterious woman named Geillis (Lotte Verbeek) and learns of the brewing Jacobite uprising.

In order to stay safe from Black Jack Randall and prevent being turned over to his custody as a missing English woman, Claire marries Jamie — much to the chagrin of Laoghaire (Nell Hudson), the young Scottish lass who is madly in love with him. Even though Claire and Jamie's love grows over time, as is made obvious by their intense sexual relationship, Claire stills longs to return to her own time. When Jamie is off on clan business, Claire runs away and returns to the stones at Craig Na Dun to try and travel back to the future. Before she can use the stones to return to her own time, she's captured by Black Jack Randall.

Winter 1743: Witchcraft and Wentworth

Outlander Claire and Geillis

Jamie manages to rescue Claire from Randall's clutches, but their problems don't stop there. Laoghaire's jealousy intensifies and she joins in a mob accusing Claire and Geillis of witchcraft. Jamie manages to rescue Claire again, but Geillis is carried off, presumably to be burned at the stake.

After the ordeal, Claire finally confesses her true identity to Jamie: She's from 200 years in the future, has a husband named Frank, and traveled through time using the stones at Craig Na Dun. He takes the whole thing rather well, considering it sounds more than a little bit crazy, and he brings Claire back to the stone circle so she can travel back to her own time. Black Jack Randall finds them again — only this time Jamie is taken prisoner, tortured and raped by Black Jack at Wentworth Prison. Claire organizes an elaborate rescue with the help of other clan members, breaking into the prison and freeing Jamie from Randall's grasp. The ordeal, however, leaves Jamie irrevocably changed.

Meanwhile, back in 1945, a distraught Frank continues the search for his missing wife.

Winter 1744: Allons en France

Outlander Jamie and Claire

At the start of Outlander 's second season, Claire nurses Jamie back to health, rebuilding his confidence, healing his physical wounds and his mind after his extreme violation. Meanwhile, they have something to lean their hopes on when Claire informs Jamie that she's pregnant.

They then head to France, where the Scottish hero "Bonnie Prince Charlie" has taken up residence. Knowing the outcome of the Battle of Culloden, where Scottish rebels are massacred and the uprising crushed, Claire and Jamie work to subtly convince Prince Charles and his supporters that the rebellion might not be a good idea.

Claire and Jamie become a part of Prince Charles' social circle and even befriend King Louis XV. They take in a young boy named Fergus and Claire stops a case of smallpox from spreading through Paris. All the while, Claire earns a reputation as "La Dame Blache," and more witchcraft rumors begin to swirl. But their attempts to quiet the rebellion plans seem all for naught, as Prince Charlie and his supporters only grow more determined to take back the English throne.

Spring 1744: The past returns

Outlander Randall and Claire

The Frasers learn that Black Jack Randall didn't die during their raid at Wentworth Prison — in fact, he's in Paris. When they hear that Black Jack has attacked Fergus, Jamie challenges him to a duel. Claire begs Jamie not to kill him in order to keep the timeline in place and assure that Randall has children, and in turn, that Frank is eventually born. Jamie reluctantly agrees, but the duel still takes place, and Claire faints from a ruptured placenta just as Jamie approaches Randall with his sword.

Jamie is thrown in prison for dueling and Claire gives birth to a stillborn baby daughter that the nuns at the hospital name Faith. After her recovery, Claire appeals to King Louis for Jamie's release and has to endure a bizarre ritual followed by the King's sexual demands. Claire and Jamie return to Scotland, knowing that they've failed to stop the Jacobites from advancing their plots, and unsure what to do next.

Fall 1945: The Jacobite Uprising

Outlander Jamie

Jamie and Claire have settled back into life in Scotland, residing at Lallybroch, Jamie's family home. They welcome new nieces and nephews and feel content in their life. But then a letter arrives informing them that Prince Charles has declared himself the rightful king and plans to come to Scotland to stage his takeover of the British crown. At first, the Jacobites make advances, taking various towns and cities for their cause. But the Battle of Culloden looms, and Claire knows the outcome isn't going to be good.

Rather than have Claire stay and try to survive the bloodbath, Jamie takes her back to the stone circle at Craig Na Dun. This time, their visit is successful — she walks through and finds herself in 1948. With three years having passed in 18th century Scotland, three years have passed in her time as well. Frank arrives back in Scotland to discover that his wife who was missing is now pregnant with another man's child, and although her story is unbelievable, he agrees to take her back and raise the baby as his own. They move to Boston, where Frank has gotten a teaching position at Harvard.

Meanwhile, Jamie fights in the Battle of Culloden and survives, finally killing Black Jack Randall.

Jamie's Timeline: 18th century Scotland

Outlander Jamie

The third season of Outlander finds Jamie and Claire separated for 20 years, though their separation is thankfully limited to a few episodes. In Scotland, Jamie lays low, living in hiding near Lallybroch after the Battle of Culloden. When British troops start interrogating his sister Jenny, Jamie has her turn him in and is sent to Ardsmuir Prison. There, Jamie is reunited with Lord John Grey, who runs the prison and whose life he saved when Grey was just 16. They form a friendship that is somewhat complicated by Grey's enduring love for Jamie, but their bond is no less devoted for it.

When the prison closes, Grey has Jamie complete his sentence as a servant at the estate of Lord Ellesmere. Here's where Jamie's storyline gets a bit soapy. He's blackmailed into sleeping with Ellesmere's young fiancée Geneva and impregnates her. She dies in childbirth, and when Ellesmere tries to kill the baby, Jamie kills him instead. Grey then helps them cover up the whole affair, and the baby is raised by Geneva's sister Isobel. Grey then marries Isobel and raises Jamie's son as his stepson.

Once Jamie's parole is up in 1764, he sets off on his own and ends up marrying Laoghaire, now a mother of two, out of pity. But the two are absolutely miserable and eventually, Jamie leaves her to open a printing shop in Edinburgh.

Claire's Timeline: 20th century Boston

Outlander Claire

Claire and Frank live in Boston, raising daughter Brianna and attempting to rekindle their past love. But Claire's once-intense affections for Frank are tainted by her experiences with Black Jack Randall, and she can't stop thinking about or loving Jamie. Claire goes to medical school and becomes a doctor. She soon discovers that Frank is having an affair, but they stay married for Brianna's sake and come to an agreement that Frank is allowed to pursue his other relationship.

As Brianna grows into an adult, she figures out the truth about Claire's visit to the past. When Frank dies in a car accident, mother and daughter decide that Claire should attempt to find some closure by traveling to Scotland to see what they can learn about Jamie. Thinking that he may have died in the Battle of Culloden, they utilize the help of historian Roger MacKenzie to look into Jamie's story. When they discover that he survived the Battle of Culloden and would be living in Edinburgh, Claire decides to travel back in time through the stones once again to reunite with Jamie. They also learn that Geillis, Claire's friend from the past, was actually from the 1960s and had just used the stones to travel to the time when she and Claire first met — and that Geillis is an ancestor of Roger's, despite the fact that they both lived in the same time.

1766: A voyage across the sea

Outlander Claire and Jamie

Jamie and Claire reunite in Edinburgh at Jamie's print shop. Though the two have aged 20 years, their love rekindles quite easily; Jamie is married to Laoghaire, but that marriage is quickly annulled considering Claire is "still alive" after Culloden. Jamie had been portraying himself as a widower, but Claire's return leads to an elaborate story that she was lost for 20 years. Laoghaire accepts the annulment but demands money from Jamie in return. He and his nephew Young Ian venture to a remote island so Jamie can procure some valuable gems stashed away after the Jacobite Uprising, but Young Ian is taken by pirates and put on a ship to the New World — Jamaica, to be exact. Jamie and Claire follow in another ship.

The rest of season 3 takes place in Jamaica, where Lord John Grey has become a governor and Claire discovers that her friend Geillis is still alive, not burned at the stake after all. She has become a type of local priestess who wishes to travel through time again, this time using Ian as a sacrifice. Claire tells her that she knows Geillis is actually from the 20th century, Grey helps them rescue Ian, and Claire and Jamie sail for Scotland, only to be shipwrecked. After surviving their ordeal, they wake up on the American mainland in Georgia.

1767: Claire and Jamie in the New World

Outlander Aunt Jocasta

Season 4 starts out with many characters divided as Claire and Jamie make their way up the coast of America to North Carolina. Along the way, they encounter Native Americans, redcoats, and hints of the budding American Revolution. But the most nefarious encounter they experience is with an Irish criminal pirate named Stephen Bonnet, who takes advantage of the Frasers' kindness and robs them.

They eventually arrive in North Carolina at Jamie's aunt Jocasta's plantation Riverrun, where they recover. Aunt Jocasta wants to make Jamie her heir, but he declines, saying that he could never own slaves. Though the two had their hearts set on returning to Scotland, Jamie is offered land and incentives that make staying in America more attractive. Jamie and Claire settle on some land, a beautiful hill that they name Fraser's Ridge, and begin to build the cabin that would become their family home.

1971: Brianna and Roger

Outlander Brianna and Roger

Brianna and Roger grow close while in Scotland. He takes her to a Sottish festival and proposes marriage. Brianna rejects him, saying that she's not ready to get married just yet, even though she does want to have a sexual relationship with him. Roger, being a traditionalist, doesn't want to sleep with Brianna unless they're married.

Brianna learns through Roger's documents that her parents, Claire and Jamie, are killed in a fire at their home on Fraser's Ridge sometime in the 1770s. Brianna decides to head back in time to save her parents and travels through the stones to 18th century Scotland; Roger, realizing what she has done, follows behind her. The two are completely out of their element 200 years in the past, and Brianna continues her journey to America by ship with Roger just missing her every step of the way. He boards a separate ship, and the two land in Wilmington, North Carolina. Roger and Brianna are reunited in Wilmington. They decide to put their differences behind them and promise themselves to one another in a Scottish handfasting ceremony. But once Brianna learns that Roger knew about the fire and didn't tell her, she storms off, continuing her hunt for her parents. In her journey, Brianna, unfortunately, comes into contact with the pirate Stephen Bonnet, who violently rapes her.

1770: The Fraser family

Outlander Fraser Family

Brianna eventually finds Claire and Jamie, and they bring her to live at Fraser's Ridge. When Brianna learns she's pregnant, she tells Claire that it might be Stephen Bonnet's baby. Jamie learns about Brianna's attack, but Claire withholds the information that Brianna's rapist was Stephen Bonnet. As an unfortunate result, when Roger arrives at Fraser's Ridge looking for Brianna, Jamie assumes he's her attacker and beats him to within an inch of his life and hands him off to the Mohawk tribe. Jamie and Young Ian then set out on a rescue mission to find Roger and bring him back to Riverrun. Young Ian stays with the Mohawks in exchange for Roger's release, deciding to take on a new life with the Native Americans. Brianna gives birth at Riverrun and Jamie returns with Roger, who then promises to raise the child as his own.

Season 4 ends with British soldiers arriving at Riverrun and requesting that Jamie, who had promised himself to the English crown in exchange for his land, start a militia in order to quelch the growing American resentment against the English that would lead to the American Revolution. With rebellion looming, the Fraser family has to decide how much they want to stay in the past.

Outlander Season 7, Part 1's Ending Is An Impactful Callback To Season 2

Outlander forgets a season 3 detail after malva's jamie accusation, outlander season 6: time travel presents a major problem for bree & roger.

  • Outlander timeline involves time travel using magic stones, with travelers ending up approximately 200 years in the past.
  • Time runs consistently in both timelines and characters age at the same rate, making it difficult to always keep track of it all.
  • Gemstones are used to safely pass through the stones, and some believe sacrifice is necessary for time travel.

The Outlander timeline begins when a young woman, Claire Randall, accidentally steps into a stone circle in the Highlands and is transported 200 years back in time. As the series continues, viewers discover that Claire will meet a few others who have discovered the secrets of the stones, and she will return to her own time, and back again, eventually having her daughter follow. Based on the Outlander book series by Diana Gabaldon, there are a few "rules" for this type of time travel using magic stones. A traveler will end up approximately 200 years in the past, based on their own time.

Time also runs at a consistent speed, and characters age at the same rate. Multiple places around the world allow people to travel, and anyone passing through one of these spots will end up at the same spot in the other timeline. Gemstones are also used to safely pass through the stones , and some believe sacrifice is also needed. With all this wandering back and forth between centuries, Outlander has an unsurprisingly complicated timeline, not least because the series tells the two timelines simultaneously, weaving them together for Claire's story. While there is time travel throughout, the Outlander timeline for seasons 5 and 6 mostly stays put, which brings the story to Outlander season 7 .

Jamie and Claire being in America suggests they left the Jacobite Rebellion behind. Outlander season 7 shows how its aftermath affects them later.

Outlander Season 1's Timeline

Spring 1945 / may-winter 1743.

The Outlander timeline for season 1 is a relatively simple one, in terms of time jumps, and only two time periods exist here. The series begins in the 1940s, as Claire and her husband Frank are reconnecting after WWII. They travel to Scotland together, which is where Claire accidentally stumbles through the stones , into the past. There, she becomes the guest/prisoner of the locals, including Jaime Fraser.

Spring 1945: Claire and Frank Randall are on their trip to Scotland to rekindle their romance after so long apart. On Beltane (May 1), Claire and Frank see some local women at a stone circle (Craigh Na Dun), performing a ritual that appears to be magical/druidic. Claire later returns to the circle to investigate a plant she saw and Claire is magically transported back in time .

May/June, 1743: Claire wakes up by the stones on May 2. A redcoat, the ancestor of her husband (Jack Randall) attempts to take her prisoner, but she is saved by locals. Claire is taken to Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan McKenzie. At Castle Leoch, she learns about the Jacobite rebellion brewing and meets a local wise woman (Geillis), and a young woman (Laoghaire) who has her eye on Jamie. Claire and Jamie marry, to keep Claire safe from the Redcoats.

Summer 1743: After their wedding, Claire tries to escape, to return to the stones and, hopefully, her own time. However, she is captured by Jack Randall, and she's nearly assaulted before Jamie rescues her.

October 1743: In October of the Outlander timeline, Geillis and Claire are accused of witchcraft. Both women are nearly burned at the stake, but Jamie saves Claire, leaving Geillis to her fate. Claire is honest with Jamie about where she comes from, and although he offers to take her safely to the stones, she decides to stay.

Winter, 1743: Claire and Jamie are at his family home, Lallybroch, when Jamie is betrayed by the Redcoats and taken prisoner at Wentworth Prison. There, he is tortured by Jack Randall, and sentenced to be executed, but Claire rescues him.

Spring 1945 (reprise): Back in post-war Scotland, Frank Randall is searching for his missing wife, but when no trace of her is found, the police assume she simply ran away.

Outlander Season 2's Timeline

April 1948, january 1744-april 1746.

The Outlander timeline for season 2 presents a change of scenery for Claire and Jamie , as they travel to France in the hopes that they will be able to thwart the Jacobite uprising and prevent the slaughter that Claire knows is coming . They must do this secretly, though, as publicly (at least, in their circles), Jamie must be seen as a supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Despite their best efforts, Claire and Jamie fail to stop the coming war and return to Scotland to do what they can to limit the damage.

January 1744: Claire works to heal the physical and emotional damage done to Jamie during his time in Wentworth Prison, and reveals to him that she is pregnant.

February 1744: Claire and Jamie head to France.

Spring/Summer 1744: Claire and Jamie work their way into Prince Charles' social circle. Jamie takes a young boy named Fergus into his employ, and they learn that Jack Randall is not dead. Randall comes to Paris and attacks Fergus, prompting Jamie to challenge him to a duel, get thrown in prison, and cause Claire to miscarry.

Fall 1744: Claire and Jamie return to Scotland.

August - December 1745: Jamie receives a letter in the Outlander timeline, saying Charles Stuart has declared he is the rightful King and is coming to Scotland. At first, the Jacobites seemed to succeed, taking over various cities. Claire travels with Jamie, treating the wounded.

April 1746: Culloden. Jamie will fight in the battle, but he wishes Claire to be safe, so he returns her to the stones. Pregnant once again, she passes through, sobbing. Jamie returns to the battle, even though he knows he will lose.

April 1948 : Claire returns to the 1940s , two months pregnant and heartbroken. She reunites with Frank, expecting him to leave her, but he stays. He has been offered a teaching position at Harvard, and the two move to Boston to raise her child as Frank's.

Outlander Season 3's Timeline

1949-1968, 1752-1767.

Outlander season 3 is where the Outlander timeline starts to jump back and forth between Claire in Boston and Jamie in the aftermath of Culloden, with the first half of the season taking place in both times as the lovers are kept apart for many years . Then, the second half of the season sees Claire and Jamie reunited and also sees the location shift a third time, from Scotland to Jamaica, as Claire and Jamie rush to rescue Young Ian, Jamie's nephew who has been taken by pirates. It's an action-packed season of the iconic fantasy series, and one that covers a huge period, not all of which happens on-screen.

Jamie's Timeline

1752: Jamie has been living secretly near Lallybroch since surviving Culloden in the Outlander timeline, and is struggling to stay hidden and keep the English from harming his loved ones. After soldiers question his sister Jenny and then capture and cut the hand off Fergus, Jamie decides to have Jenny turn him in. He goes to Ardsmuir Prison.

1755: A new warden of Ardsmuir, Lord John Grey, takes over and develops a relationship with Jamie.

1756 : Ardsmuir is closed, and Grey allows Jamie to work out his sentence as an indentured servant at the estate of Lord Ellesmere. He is blackmailed into sleeping with Geneva, the Lord's young fiance, and gets her pregnant. She dies in childbirth, and Ellesmere tries to kill the child. Jamie kills Ellesmere, Grey helps them cover it all up, and Jamie stays on, with his child being raised as the young Lord, until 1764, when he is paroled and returns to Lallybroch.

1765: Jamie marries Laoghaire, but the two are miserable. He then leaves her for Edinburgh, where he opens a print shop.

Claire's Timeline

1949: Claire and Frank are trying to rebuild their marriage and raise Claire's daughter, Brianna, as their own.

1950s : Claire goes to medical school in the Outlander timeline, becoming the only female student. She manages to succeed, graduating as a doctor while raising her child with Frank. Frank, however, is having an affair, which Claire finds out about. They stay together for Brianna.

1966: Brianna graduates high school, and Frank is offered a position at Cambridge. He and Claire argue over what will happen next. Frank is killed in a car crash.

1968: Brianna, who now knows the truth about Claire and Jamie, travels with her mother back to Scotland to try and discover what happened to her father. There, they learn that Geillis Duncan traveled back in time intentionally, in May of this year, and Jamie has survived Culloden. While Claire decides to return, Brianna starts a romance with Roger Wakefield.

Claire & Jamie Reunited

1766: Claire and Jamie are reunited in the Outlander timeline in Edinburgh after 20 years . The two return to Lallybroch, but Jenny isn't thrilled to see Claire again, believing that she abandoned Jamie after the battle. Laoghaire is even less happy about her return. This is resolved, somewhat, but Laoghaire demands money from Jamie, and he finds out about hidden Jacobite treasure when in prison. They go to collect it, but as Young Ian is trying to get it for them, he is taken by pirates.

1767: Claire and Jamie travel to Jamaica to save Ian. There, they meet Lord John Grey, who is now governor, and Claire learns about everything that happened while she was back in her own time. They also run into another familiar face - Geillis. She has taken Ian captive. She is searching for gemstones and intends to travel through time again, using a cave on the island and Ian as a sacrifice. Grey can make sure that Jamie is safe, and Claire saves Ian. They intend to head home to Scotland, but are shipwrecked, and wake up on a beach in the New World.

Outlander season 6, episode 6 left out a critical detail from Jamie's past in season 3 after Malva, Claire's apprentice, accused him of infidelity.

Outlander Season 4's Timeline

1971, april 1767-may 1770.

The Outlander timeline for season 4 continues on a split timeline because, while Claire and Jamie are reunited in the 1700s , Brianna and Roger are still back in the 20th century for the first half of the season before Brianna eventually decides to follow in her mother's footsteps and do a little time traveling of her own. Although, like the previous season, the two couples do eventually meet up in the past, bringing the Outlander timelines together again.

Claire & Jamie's Timeline

April 1767: Shipwrecked off the coast of Georgia, Claire and Jamie manage to find their way to North Carolina in the Outlander timeline, meeting a nefarious pirate-type named Stephen Bonnet along the way. There, Jamie is offered land and incentives to stay and help colonize, so they stay. Over the next few months, they head up to Aunt Jocasta's plantation, as she is a relative of Jamie's, and they can figure out where to settle from there.

August 1767: Claire, Jamie, and their family decide on a piece of land, naming it Fraser's Ridge. They start to settle in and build a home, recruiting others to settle nearby.

Brianna & Roger's Timeline

1971: Brianna and Roger are growing closer in The Outlander timeline. They have some ups and downs, but it seems as though they may reconcile when Roger discovers some historical records showing where Claire and Jamie were living in North Carolina. He also discovers that Claire and Jamie were killed in a house fire. Brianna decides to head back through the stones herself. Roger follows her, leaving both in 1769 Scotland.

The Fraser Family Timeline

September 1769 : Brianna and Roger take separate ships to the New World, then meet in Wilmington. The two are hand-fasted, but she later storms off, and then has the misfortune of meeting Stephen Bonnet, who rapes her. Thankfully, she then finds her parents, and they head back to Fraser's Ridge. Roger attempts to follow them, but thanks to a series of misunderstandings, Jamie believes that he is the one who attacked Brianna, beats him to a pulp, and hands him over to the local Mohawk tribe. Brianna reveals that she is pregnant, and heads to Riverrun to safely have the baby.

February 1770: Confusion over Brianna's attacker is cleared up in the Outlander timeline, and Jaime and Ian head to the tribe to try and get Roger back. Ian offers to be traded for Roger and is adopted into the tribe.

May 1770: Brianna has her baby in Rivverrun.

Weeks later: Claire and Jamie head to Riverrun, and tell Brianna about Roger. Roger rides in to join them, saying that he will raise the baby as his own. Jaime is then approached by a band of Redcoats, who have ridden up to find him and request that he forms a militia.

Outlander Season 5's Timeline

1960-1969, 1729 scotland, 1770-1772.

Now that the whole family is back together again, the Outlander timeline becomes considerably easier to understand for the next two seasons, mainly staying in North Carolina. Little time travel happens in Outlander season 5 , with most time jumps occurring in the form of flashbacks . Outlander season 5 sees the Fraser family fighting to maintain Fraser's Ridge while Jamie is tasked with killing Murtagh Fitzgibbons and dealing with the threat of the Regulators' rebellion. Meanwhile, Claire tries her hardest to keep her family safe while wholly neglecting herself, and Roger and Brianna discover living in the 18th century might not be best for Jemmy.

Scotland 1729: A flashback in the Outlander timeline further complicates Jamie's relationship with Murtagh, as the premiere episode sees a heart-wrenching scene between the two. The flashback sees Murtagh and Jamie in the fields outside Lallybroch shortly after Jamie's mother has died from childbirth. Murtagh vows to Jamie that he will always be there for him, which is a haunting sentiment considering what Governor Tryon is asking Jamie to do.

North Carolina 1770: Brianna and Roger tie the knot, but the festivities for Jamie are spoiled when Governor Tyron reminds him he has to kill Murtagh and expects him to raise a militia against the Regulators. Family drama kicks up when Jocasta reminds Roger that Brianna's son is heir to River Run. Jamie takes the pledges of the Scots and appoints Roger as his Captain, but secretly tells Murtagh to flee. In addition, Claire starts using modern medicinal techniques on the settlers. The Regulator threat grows, so Claire and Jamie begin recruiting for the militia and adopt a biracial child from a woman who had been torturing her abusive husband.

Spring 1771: As the Regulator's rebellion heats up in the Outlander timeline, eventually culminating with the historical Battle of Alamance in May 1771, Jamie uncovers Governor Tyon's true motives behind fighting them and feels conflicted. Claire's modern medical techniques get her in hot water when news of her prowess travels, and Roger finds himself in a feud in Brownsville that almost costs him the militia.

May 16th, 1771: Jamie celebrates his birthday before the Battle of Alamance, and Brianna saves the day when she remembers details from the battle, causing Roger to go behind enemy lines. Murtagh is killed by one of his soldiers when he joins the fray and saves Jamie's life. While they are victorious, Roger is nearly hanged but lives — however, not without injuries.

Fall 1771: Jamie, Roger, and Ian join a hunting party to prepare for the winter. However, Jamie is bitten by a venomous snake after the hunting party splits up. Amputation is discussed, but Brianna saves him by turning a snake fang into a syringe. In addition, Fergus and Marsali have their baby. The Frasers also develop a plan to deal with Stephen Bonnet, but it all goes awry, and Bonnet kidnaps Brianna. Luckily, Brianna gets the message of her whereabouts through Bonnet's servant that works at the brothel, but only after Claire helps with her legs. The Frasers catch up to them, and Bonnet is sentenced to drown.

Fall 1772: The Outlander timeline jumps a year into the future. Roger and Brianna discover that Jemmy travels through the stones when he shatters an opal, meaning they can return to the future. Claire also reveals to Ian that she, Brianna, and Roger are from the future. Meanwhile, there's a thuggish group calling themselves the Committee of Safety that asks Jamie to join them. In a shocking turn, Claire is kidnapped by Lionel Brown, but meets another time traveler named Donner and is rescued by Jamie. Meanwhile, Roger, Brianna, and Jemmy attempt to go to the future, but somehow end up in the same place and time.

Boston 1960s: A flashback in the Outlander timeline sees Claire treating a patient who reminds her a lot of Jamie.

North Carolina 1968: Claire imagines the Fraser clan together in 1968 to cope with the trauma of being kidnapped by Lionel.

Oxford 1969: A flashback shows Jamie teaching a class at Oxford on famous last words.

Outlander season 6 has a time-travel problem after Bree and Roger’s season 5 fake-out. Will the Starz series fix it or stray from Gabaldon’s books?

Outlander Season 6's Timeline

The Outlander timeline for season 6 sees no time travel save for two flashbacks, and takes place between 1773 and 1776 in North Carolina, as the Fraser family gears up for the Revolutionary War. There aren't many indicators of exactly what year things are happening, save for the reference to the Boston Tea Party. Despite season 6 only having eight episodes, a ton of ground is covered in the chapter and Outlander fully embraces family drama as one of its many genres . The season is marked by rising colonial tensions in the States, and the Frasers must decide where their loyalties lie.

Scotland 1746: A flashback in the Outlander timeline chronicles the experiences of the real-life historical figure Flora MacDonald as a sign of hope for the Scottish rebels.

Scotland 1753: This flashback is prompted by the sudden appearance of former Ardsmuir prisoner John Christie. The flashback reveals that he made some sort of deal with the governor as security is tightened on Jamie and his group. Jamie is forced to become a freemason like Christie to cease infighting at the prison.

North Carolina 1773: Tom Christie appears in the Outlander timeline and tries to settle on Fraser Ridge, and Major MacDonald continues to try and persuade Jamie to be the Indian Agent, letting it slip that it will go to Richard Brown, Lionel's brother, if he refuses. Due to this, he takes the job. In turn, Claire is dealing with the traumatic events of her capture by inhaling ether.

North Carolina 1774: Jamie's first assignment sees him visiting a Cherokee Chief who asks him for guns, and he refuses. Tom Christie accuses Claire of witchcraft because of her medical prowess and is further blamed when she attends Granny Wilson's funeral, overseen by Roger, and she starts breathing again. Marsali and Fergus have another baby, but their child has dwarfism. Jamie angers the Cherokees when he doesn't request an arsenal for them and Claire learns of the Boston Tea Party. Tom finally allows Claire to perform his hand surgery, and Fergus' baby is targeted by superstitious Protestants. In addition, Jamie questions his prior decision when another Indian Agent challenges his beliefs.

North Carolina 1775: Claire and Jamie realize how fraught tensions truly are with the colonists when they attend a Loyalist event in Wilmington that surprisingly sees Flora MacDonald fighting for the side of the crown. Claire figures out too late that the water on the ridge is contaminated, and she succumbs to dysentery with a slew of other people. She survives, but Malva reveals that she took advantage of Jamie while he was in a drunken state and sick with worry over Claire, and now she's pregnant with his child. Then, Malva ends up dead. Roger fully embraces his role as minister, but Brianna isn't so sure.

North Carolina 1776: After Claire is arrested for Malva's murder by the Committee of Safety in the Outlander timeline, Allan Christie suggests Jamie should be arrested too because he had an affair with Malva, and she ended up dead. Jamie and Claire agree to go in together. Meanwhile, in Edenton, Jemmy gets lice causing Brianna to shave his head and reveal a nevus, proving that Roger is his biological father. The Committee for Safety is thwarted when they are forced to go to Wilmington for the trial and Brown begins losing control. Outlander season 6 ends with Jamie and Claire separated, but Ian rallies the Cherokees to rescue Jamie.

Outlander Season 8: Claire and Jamie’s story will end on a ‘high’

By alexandria ingham | sep 15, 2023.

Outlander season 7

All good things come to an end, and we know that Outlander Season 8 is going to be the last. How will it all end for Claire and Jamie?

From the beginning of  Outlander , it’s all been about Claire and Jamie’s love story. This is more than a simple romance, but a story that spreads across decades, continents, and time. Of course, there are a lot of questions about how their story will come to an end.

Outlander Season 8 is going to be the last. We also know that right now Book 10 is set to be the last—although, Diana Gabaldon did say that about previous books and then kept going. Eventually, we need to say goodbye to Claire and Jamie, and there are many who fear that the whole thing will end with the two of them dying.

Matt B. Roberts talks about Outlander Season 8

While speaking on the official podcast for the series, showrunner Matt B. Roberts talked about the series and the ending. One thing he shared was that Claire and Jamie’s story will end “on a high.”

What does that mean? He didn’t elaborate, but we could look at this as a good thing. It likely means that the two are going to end up in a happy place. Is that dying in each other’s arms like  The Notebook ? Maybe, but it could just mean that we’re left with Claire and Jamie watching on as their grandchildren play, surrounded by their family. There could just be hope for peace after decades of strife and pain.

We know Claire and Jamie deserve peace. They’ve been separated for 20 years, failed to prevent Culloden from happening, and are now in the middle of the American Revolutionary War. Claire has been tried as a witch and almost tried as a murderer, while Jamie has been flogged, raped, and almost killed by a goddamn snake. The two need to see happiness and peace at the end of  Outlander Season 8.

What to Expect in Outlander Season 7, According to the Books

Portrait of Maggie Fremont

If a season of Outlander doesn’t end with resourceful time traveler Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and/or her broad-shouldered Highlander husband, Jamie (Sam Heughan), in a precarious situation, is it even a season of Outlander ? Someone’s life has to be left dangling at some point on the danger scale; otherwise, what are we doing here? Season six follows the tradition: We left Claire in prison, wrongfully accused of murder (and of being a witch, but like, when isn’t she being accused of that?), and Jamie racing to find her. What will happen next? Will Claire hang for a crime she didn’t commit?

Good news, Outlander friends: The answers are already tucked away in Diana Gabaldon’s novel series. We don’t have to wait to find out what happens! While Outlander the TV series doesn’t strictly adhere to the novels it’s based on, sometimes moving story lines around or changing them completely, the show has thus far mostly followed the events of each novel in order. This most recent season pulled the majority of its plot from book six, A Breath of Snow and Ashes , which means the upcoming season seven will be based mostly on book seven, An Echo in the Bone .

Now, if you look at that stack of very long Outlander novels and are turned off because you subscribe to famed philosopher and Happy Endings character Penny Hartz’s school of thought that “reading’s stupid, TV rules!,” you’re in the right place! Below, find some predictions as to what Claire and Jamie might get up to in season seven based on all the intel we have from the seventh novel. You don’t have to read a thing! Except for this post. Sorry, we can’t do everything for you. Obviously, all of the spoilers to follow.

First, we have to wrap up the events of book six.

Ah, yes. Because of the pandemic and some other scheduling issues, Outlander ’s sixth season was a truncated one with just eight episodes. While the series left Claire alone in a jail cell facing a possible execution for a crime she didn’t commit, all of the Malva Christie stuff gets wrapped up in A Breath of Snow and Ashes , and it seems likely the TV series will start season seven by finishing that story line. And, uh, it’s a doozy, folks. Tom Christie admits to having feelings for Claire and knows she’s innocent, so he confesses to killing his daughter in order to spare Claire’s life. But Tom isn’t guilty either — eventually Allan Christie confesses to Claire that he is both the father of his sister’s child and that he murdered her to stop her from telling anyone. Yeah, it gets pretty dark. But unsettling as it all is, that should (mostly) be a wrap on the Christies, and honestly, good riddance.

Then we time travel.

Again, this will include some plot points that take place in book six that have yet to happen on the show: Once Bree has her daughter, Amanda, Claire realizes she has a heart murmur, and nothing can be done about it in 1776. Bree, Roger, and their two children return to the future and wind up in 1980, where they move into — surprise! — Lallybroch. Book seven, An Echo in the Bone , finds the MacKenzies rebuilding their lives in their new (old) time, but that doesn’t mean the time travel hijinks end. They end up getting a visitor from the past: William Buccleigh MacKenzie. You know, the secret son of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan, Roger’s ancestor, who … had him sorta hanged that one time ? That’s not awkward at all, right? Well, that guy accidentally goes through some stones, ends up in 1980, and makes his way to Roger and Bree for help. I’m crossing my fingers for this to happen in season seven for two reasons: One, it’ll be fun to see a dude from the 1770s try to make sense of the 1980s, and two, you might recall that when we met Buck in season five, he was played by Graham McTavish (who also played Dougal), and it’s always a delight when he pops up on Outlander . Give us the Buck!

But that’s not the only time travel happening in 1980: One of Bree’s colleagues, Rob Cameron, decides to kidnap Jemmy, and they believe he’s taken him back in time. Toward the end of An Echo in the Bone , Roger and Buck travel back through the stones in an effort to save Jemmy. Sorry to say, but Jem’s not there — still, it sounds as though those two distant relatives will be going on a real adventure.

Speaking of Lallybroch, we’ll get a long-awaited (and bittersweet) family reunion.

At the end of A Breath of Snow and Ashes , Wendigo Donner ransacks the Fraser house looking for gems in order to travel, a fight ensues, and the house burns down. Jamie and Claire don’t die in that fire, but it does answer most of the questions about that pesky obituary. This hasn’t happened in the show yet, but in season six we did get a peek at someone who looks like Donner at the jail in Wilmington, where, conveniently, Claire is being held. In the show, it looks as if Donner already has a gem, but regardless, it seems things are aligning for some version of this fire to happen soon. The fire is important because it is the impetus for Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian to travel back to Scotland so Jamie can get his printing press and bring it back to America. The trip to Scotland and the Frasers’ time in their homeland is a major part of the book, so I suspect we’ll get some Scotland time within season seven’s 16 episodes. Their time there is bittersweet, though: Yes, they get to have a long-(so long!)awaited reunion with Jenny and (old) Ian at Lallybroch, but they also learn that Ian is dying from consumption. Timing is everything, especially in Outlander , right?

And there’s that other kind of family reunion, in which one participant doesn’t realize he’s a part of the family.

I’m talking about Jamie’s son William, of course. There’s a lot of William in An Echo in the Bone . We haven’t seen him on the show since that time he and Lord John Grey visited and John got the measles in season four , but here we find him grown and a loyal member of the British Army. Does that make things confusing for our resident rebel Jamie Fraser? You bet. While William has his own adventures to go off on, the crux of his story has always been the secret about his true biological father. You knew eventually that secret would get out, right? Well, it’s not until the end of book seven that William learns the truth. Who knows if we’ll get that far in William’s story just yet, but Jamie’s secret son should at least begin to play a bigger role in the overall narrative.

Then something really wild happens …

Seriously, if you want some surprises regarding Claire and Jamie’s future, stop reading right here. You’ve made your choice!

So Claire and Ian leave Scotland without Jamie and later receive word that the boat Jamie was supposed to be traveling on to America sank, and they believe Jamie to be dead. Everyone’s really sad about it. Then, when Claire is about to be arrested for being a spy (she is constantly getting into trouble — we know this), someone offers to marry her in order to give her protection. Did you guess Lord John Grey? Because yes, Claire and Lord John end up married in book seven, and yes, they drunkenly (and full of grief for the loss of Jamie, whom they both love with all of their heart) consummate that marriage. And then Jamie shows up alive and well! It’s a wild turn of events, so best start preparing yourself now in anticipation of what’s sure to be a controversial story line come season seven.

When did jamie fraser’s ghost appear in outlander, why is jamie fraser’s ghost so young, when will the truth behind jamie fraser’s ghost be revealed.

Passionate romance, heated arguments, and heartbreaking deaths. Fans of Outlander , the historical drama series based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name, know that the show offers a variety of captivating topics and valuable lessons. It follows the story of Claire Randall, an American nurse, whose trip to Scotland in 1946 together with her husband is cut short when she suddenly travels back in time to 1743 and falls in love with the stubborn Highlander, Jamie Fraser. While there are numerous significant aspects elevating Outlander to the status of one of the best historical dramas out there, above all, it is the constant involvement of some sort of mystery that keeps viewers intrigued and craving for more.

While many questions have been answered in six and a half seasons over the course of a decade, there is no doubt that the second part of Season 7, which will be released on November 22, and the eighth and final season will round up all the remaining questions by giving satisfying explanations. One of the biggest questions is regarding the brief appearance of Jamie Fraser’s ghost in Claire’s time, so let’s waste no time and dive right into the depths of this mystery.

Not available

The first episode of Season 1, which was released back in 2014, certainly lays out an exciting foundation for Claire and Jamie’s story. It kicks off with Claire and her husband Frank’s trip to Scotland, celebrating their reunion after a long separation due to the Second World War. As they spend time growing closer again, Claire also finds joy in exploring the small town of Inverness, leading her to a special place called Craigh na Dun, which will later be revealed as being home to a stone that allows for time travel .

On October 30th, 1946, Frank walks back to the inn late at night and sees Claire standing by the window doing her hair. However, he doesn’t only see his wife, but through the rain and lightning, Frank also sees a man attentively watching Claire . When he approaches him and tries to grab him by the shoulder, the man turns away and suddenly disappears out of thin air. The next day, Claire vanishes out of nowhere, and Frank immediately suspects that the man stalking her the day before is somehow involved. What Frank doesn't know is that this exact man would soon marry his wife, marking the best relationship in Outlander .

After Claire is reported missing, Frank immediately issues a warrant for the man he saw, and the drawing is a spitting image of Jamie. This led many to the conclusion that it was, in fact, the Highlander standing in the rain that night in Scotland in 1946. As the resemblance was impossible to deny, the author confirmed that the man Frank saw really was the ghost of Jamie .

How Historically Accurate Is Outlander?

Outlander blends fantasy and historical accuracy in an enchanting way, here's how much is real.

After numerous failed attempts at traveling through the stones and lacking the ability to hear the ringing or sense the power that radiates from them, it has been made clear that Jamie doesn’t have the ability to travel through time . However, there still have been some hints that he does have a connection to the future, and one of the best Outlander seasons , the seventh, sheds more light on that.

Jamie’s dreams become a recurring topic of conversation, and each time, the ties to Claire’s time grow more apparent. He doesn’t only see Jemmy on the phone in the future, but he also sees other technological advancements that he couldn’t have known in his own time. He describes seeing Claire surrounded by electrical light, leaving viewers questioning how he could possibly know such a thing when he can’t time travel .

One of the most logical theories could be that it isn’t Jamie’s body that travels through time, but much rather just his soul . A possible explanation might be that during near-death experiences, his soul leaves his body and is projected to Claire’s time. Once he comes back, the visions are still there. This would also tie in with the revealed piece of information that Jamie’s ghost in the first episode of Outlander is 25 years old . However, this simultaneously raises the question as to why he is of this exact age.

Taking a closer look at Jamie’s life, there is a striking connection that can be made between Jamie himself and his ghost. Since he was born in 1721, he was 25 years old in 1746. This wasn’t just a random year for him. It marks the year of the deadly Battle of Culloden, which happened near Inverness and almost cost Jamie his life . Because of his near-death experience on that battlefield, the possible conclusion could be drawn that his soul left his body and traveled to who he loved the most. In this case, his soul, taking on the shape of his body in the future, went straight to see Claire, who was in Inverness 200 years later . While this could be a possible explanation, there are still lots of question marks surrounding the fact that his ghost watched her a day before Claire traveled through the stones for the first time.

Why We Might Never See This Outlander Actor on Screen Again

The long-running series is finally coming to an end and that leaves a fan-favorite actor at a loose end...

Outlander fans certainly need to be blessed with patience, which is something both Claire and Jamie had to learn along the way, and the same goes for viewers of the show. With the first part of the seventh season having been released in June 2023, there is a massive gap until the release of Part 2. On November 22, 2024, the second part will finally bring back the Frasers' adventures and shed more light on how the story of Jamie and Claire might conclude.

As for the reveal of the truth behind Jamie Fraser’s ghost in Season 1 of Outlander , fans are certainly left to speculate some more. The writer of the show reveals that this particular mystery is only set to be solved in the eighth and final season of Outlander . Airing only mid-to-late 2025, there is still quite some time to go, but there is no need to worry. With almost seven full seasons exploring every corner of Jamie and Claire's tumultuous journey, re-watching all of them will not only make time go by faster but also allow for new details, which might have been missed during the first watch, to come to the surface.
